Will you be my friend? Since arriving at Canine Safe Harbor, watching Maddie has been like watching a butterfly emerge from a cocoon. She was so timid and shy when she first arrived. With the love and patience of the volunteers at the shelter, she has really spread her wings! She is now confident enough to go up to people, and she even seeks out attention. This is a huge step for a girl so shy she would cower from everyone. We are all very proud of Maddie. This sweet girl deserves a happy ending!

Wanted: Old Cell Phones My name is Karen McGuire, the daughter of Jimmy & Kumi McGuire and I'm a 7th grader at Woodrow Wilson Middle School. Recently, I was accepted into a program called People to People. This summer, I will be taking a trip to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales to learn about their cultures and what it takes to become a student ambassador. I need to raise funds for my tuition on this trip. One of the ways is recycling old, used or even broken cell phones. I am working with a company called PhoneRaiser in Texas. I send them the cell phones; they refurbish them and send them to third-world countries or people in the army. I found out through this program that 1 phone can contaminate up to 39,000 gallons of water if disposed of in a normal landfill, and that currently only 4% of the cell phones get recycled.

Grayce passed away February 20, 2012 at her home. A funeral service was held at Life Story Funeral Home Rupert, Durham, Marshall & Gren in Plainwell. Grayce’s family includes her children: Linda (Al) Blanchard, Mitch McCarten and Penni (Ray) Vandervort; many grand and great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by Mick, her husband 62 years. Grayce enjoyed gardening and hunting for treasures at garage sales. She also loved her pet cats and dogs and enjoyed camping. Gerald died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 in Kalamazoo. Jerry was born July 10, 1947 in Kalamazoo to Aaron and Esther (Johnson) Howe and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a graduate of Otsego High School and during the Vietnam War served his country in the U.S. Marines. For many years he was employed in the paper industry and during his leisure time enjoyed watching sports. Surviving are a son and a daughter, Gerald ‘Jerry’ Howe, II of Plainwell and Rebecca (Adam Posther) Howe of Kalamazoo; siblings, Barbara (Bob) Rietkerk of Kalamazoo, Joann West of Alamo, John (Donna) Howe of Grand Junction, Janet (Ray) Penn of Portage, David Howe of Las Vegas and Kenny (Phyllis) Howe of Alamo; many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were three brothers and two sisters, Aaron, Sondra, Harold, Norrine and James. In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Contributions in memory of Jerry may be made to V.F.W. Post #3030. Robert passed away on March 12, 2012. Bob was born on November 7, 1927 in Muskegon, Michigan to Charles and Anna (Rakittke) Pelfresne. In 1950, he married his beloved wife, Catherine Sienna Fischer, who survives him. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and maintained an extreme love of his country; always willing and ready to discuss politics with anyone. Bob and Catherine were owners of Hanson Distributing Co. His favorite pastimes in the early years were camping and fishing on the Manistee River. In his later years he developed a love (some would call it obsession!) for golf, which gradually gave way to his newfound passion of bike riding. He and Catherine cherished many winters together in Arizona. He was always a loving father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his nine children: Lois (Gary) Herline, Robert (Karen) Pelfresne, Gary (Sue) Pelfresne, Nancy Pelfresne, Jim (Sarah) Pelfresne, Linda (John) Stegeman, Bill (Terri) Pelfresne, Lori (Dan) Baas, Janet (Brian) Vestergaard; 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. One of 12 children, he is also survived by 3 sisters: Ann (Jim) Sell, Dona Mae Pelfresne, and Margaret (Tom) Cordo in addition to 2 sisters-in-law, Eleanore Pelfresne and Maxine Bowman. Bob and Catherine were members of St. Margaret Catholic Church for many years where the memorial mass will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March 17, 2012. Mrs. Hadden died March 14th, 2012 at the age of 99 years. She was born in Chicago, IL on January 6th, 1913, the fifth of seven children of Agnes (Frano) and George Hamay who both were immigrants to America from what is now the Slovak Republic. She grew up on a farm near Paw Paw, MI and attended school there. She united in marriage with Gerald F. Hadden on April 19, 1933, and they resided thereafter in Otsego, MI. He preceded her in death in 1991. She was an active member of St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church in Otsego, the League of Mary and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She was employed by the Otsego District Library for 23 years before retiring in 1982. She enjoyed working crossword puzzles and working in her flower beds. She was preceded in death also by her three brothers, three sisters and an infant son, David. She is survived by four sons and their spouses: Donnelly and Helen Hadden of Ann Arbor, MI, Dene and Linda Hadden of South Haven, MI, Dayle and Karen Hadden of Plainwell, MI and Gary Hadden of Otsego. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, including one special granddaughter, Erica Hadden, eight greatgrandchildren, many nieces and nephews and myriad friends. The funeral Mass will be at St. Margaret Catholic Church on Monday, March 19th, 2012 at 10 o’clock AM. There will be a visitation from 4pm to 7pm Sunday with a Rosary at 7:00 at Winkel Funeral Home - Otsego In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. Margaret Catholic Church, 766 S.
