It has been called “the undatable date.” We normally think of Christmas coming on a snowy day in December. But the Bible doesn’t say. Many scholars set the date sometime in the fall or winter of 5 B.C. Others maintain it happened in spring, because shepherds “were out in their fields keeping watch over their flocks by night” suggesting lambing time. The early followers of Jesus did not pay much attention to His birth. It was not until about the 3rd century that His birth was celebrated in a formal way. By the 4th century, December 25 was settled upon in Rome as the date of our Lord’s birth. God did not give us the exact year or date and that is probably by divine intention because the true meaning of Christmas is timeless. Dean E. DAILEY AGE 63 - COOPER TOWNSHIP
Dean passed away at home early Monday m o r n i n g , November 26th, 2012. He was born January 4, 1949 in Allegan, MI to Robert and Lois (Duncan) Dailey. He is survived by his wife, Gracie Dailey, his brother Jack (Stella) Dailey, daughter Amy and son Joshua Dailey. Dean was a talented steel guitar player and was a member of several area bands over the years. He will be best remembered as a member of the Twang Brothers and Four Wheel Drive bands. Dean was a masterful CADD operator. He was employed with Environmental Technologies for 25+ years at the time of death. His drawings went beyond the requirements of the job and were often referred to as works of art. Dean loved to garden and found great satisfaction in designing and building the gardens and grounds around his home. One of his special projects was just completed last summer, a dry set field stone walled garden. It is here that his ashes will be buried early next summer when his garden is in bloom. Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held January 6th at 2 p.m. at the Old Dog Tavern in Kalamazoo. Contributions can be made in Dean’s memory to WMUKGrass Roots or WGVU TV.

Vanessa passed away Monday, December 3, 2012 at her home. Vanessa was born June 21, 1985 in Allegan, the daughter of David and Diane (Fox) Stewart. Surviving are her mother and step-father, Diane and Jerry Wheeler of Otsego; 2 half-sisters and a half-brother, Donna Jean ‘Sarah” Spencer, Bonnie Spencer and Tony Spencer, all of Grand Rapids; grandparents, Hollis and Elaine Ross of Martin, and Marv and Pattie Fox of Kalamazoo; great-grandparents, Francis and Vivian “Becky” Dunklee of Otsego; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, David (Stewart) Spencer; a sister, Ashley Marie Fox; and her grandmothers, Rosa Mae Dunklee and Erma Wheeler. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with funeral celebrant Bill Rose officiating.

Laura passed Saturday, December 1, 2012 at home with her family at her side. Laura “Sis” was born September 27, 1940 in Plainwell to Clifton and Laura (Root) Holmes and had been a lifelong resident of the area. She had been employed at the Otsego Theatre, the Otsego Inn, Metron of Allegan and for 20 years she was employed with the Kalamazoo State Hospital. Sis enjoyed golf, gardening, bowling, pool, going to casinos, road trips to Sault Ste. Marie, Torch Lake and Las Vegas. She especially enjoyed time with her family and grandchildren; reading, spending time on the lake and fishing. On December 31, 1960 in Otsego she married Ronald Lewis, who preceded her in 2004. Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Ronald Wayne (Deborah Werner) Lewis of Otsego, Betsy Lewis of Otsego and Kenny Lewis of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren, Terri Ann (Jason Sinkler) Lewis, Lindsey (Tyler) Budge, Lauran (James) Brazier, Steevi Etherton, James Werner and Brittany Simkins; a great grandson, Jason Samuel Sinkler; a sister, Ruth Holmes of Grand Junction; two brothers, Tom Holmes of Texas and Jack (Linda) Holmes of Otsego; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and sister-in-law, William (Betty) Holmes. Funeral services were held Thursday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego with Bill Rose, Celebrant officiating. Cremation followed. Memorial contributions may be made to V.F.W. George passed away Thursday, November 22, 2012 in Kalamazoo. George was born August 10, 1953 in Allegan, the son of George and Margarite (Rex) Hatten. For many years he owned and operated a tire re-selling business. On September 15, 1972 in Allegan he married Linda Metheny, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Mid Wilbur (Ronda) Hatten, George Charles (TaLisa) Hatten, Kimberly Ann Tabbert and Robert Lee (Lisa) Hatten; 9 grandchildren; 4 sisters and 3 brothers, Shirley Luepkes, Kenneth (Pam) Hatten, Barbara (Gary) Henry, Roger Hatten, Doug (Louann) Hatten, Velma (Art) Keller, Stormy Melson; many nieces and nephews. George was preceded by his brothers, Joseph ‘Joey’ and Charles ‘Bud’ Hatten; and sisters, Evelyn Vickery and Geraldine ‘Gerry’ Hatten.
