Faith &Hope

“HOW TO END THE YEAR” “… But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal …” Philippians 3:13,14 As we end the year, here are some words of faith and hope for you:

1. Count Your Blessings. As we come to the end of the year all of us can find things to be thankful for. If you were to make a list of the things, good and bad, that happened to you over the past year, I think you would find that the good things far outnumber the bad. I find joy in singing that old song, “Count your many blessings, name them one by one...” 2. Don’t Look Back. “… forgetting what is behind… “ is what Apostle Paul said. The great Lord George of England on one occasion was walking through a pasture gate with a friend. He noticed that the friend did not shut the gate, so he went back and closed the gate, and then said to his friend, “Never walk through a gate that you do not turn around and shut it.” The last day of the year is a good time to put past failures and hurts behind you. 3. Look Ahead. In the above verse, Paul uses the language of a runner “straining toward what is ahead.” A runner knows that when they look back, they begin to lose their stride. We do not know what will happen tomorrow but we know who leads on the path ahead. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” (Psalm ll9:105). 4. Set Goals for Yourself. Someone said, “Aim at nothing and you will hit it every time.” The aimless life is not fulfilling. The only way to live is to live for a purpose. When Paul said, “I press on toward the goal”, he was talking about Christian perfection – becoming more like Christ – a worthy goal for all of us as we end the year. Prayer: Lord, one thing I ask. To be more like you. In Jesus’ name. Amen. Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday (11am)

A new Civil War Exhibit opened on Saturday, December 3rd at the Otsego Area Historical Museum. The large exhibit room features both a Union and a Confederate camps set in the woods. The entrance room has two mountain howitzers, some muskets and other artifacts. Some real and some reproductions. Also, in the entrance room is a display listing all of the men from Plainwell and Otsego who served in the Civil War. Museum hours are Saturday from 10am-2pm. This exhibit will run until spring. Orvil TRUDELLE AGE 85 - OTSEGO

Orvil passed away Monday, December 26, 2011 in Holland. Mr. Trudelle was born May 6, 1926 in Edam, Saskatchewan, Canada to Aubrey Busby and Christina (Blunck) Trudelle. When Orvil came to the United States he was adopted by Louis Trudelle. During WWII he served his country in the U.S. Army, where his unit was one of the first into Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima. Orvill worked for Consumers Power Co. as an Electrical Journeyman and Maintenance Supervisor for 39 years retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Otsego Elks #1711 and the V.F.W. Post #3030; he loved to tinker on various projects and always enjoyed learning new things and intellectual conversations; he was an avid golfer with several holes-in-one; loved Gun Lake and Pine Lake, enjoyed pontoon rides, traveling to Hawaii and Florida or anywhere near the ocean. Orvil played violin and hockey in his younger years and had also gotten his pilot’s license. On August 14, 1977 in Plainwell he married Betty Rose, who preceded him in death. Surviving are his children, Lisa Sanders, Peter (Jennifer) Trudelle and Karen Beck; his step children, Martha Hill, Carol Brandfield, Lori (Dan) Blair, Charles (Pat) Hill and Elizabeth (James) Schmidt; 7 grandchildren, Crystal Sanders, Brittany (Beck) Holwerda, Gavin, Peter William, Jillian, Carys and Ayden Trudelle; 16 step grandchildren and many step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his grandson Ethan Trudelle. Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. Friday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday with Pastor Merlyn Jones officiating. Cremation will follow with burial of ashes in the Spring with Military Honors conducted by V.F.W. Post #3030. Marianne passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011 in Allegan. Mrs. Miner was born July 25, 1941 in Kalamazoo to Virgil and Vernice (Roebuck) Burchette. Marianne loved her family and was a devoted homemaker. Her leisure time was spent reading and doing arts and crafts. Surviving are two sons and five daughters, William Miner of Otsego, Joseph Miner of Borculo, Michelle Coulter of Otsego, Geana Miner of Allegan, Dorothy Warrington of East Jordan, Viva Benton and Amy Miner, both of Plainwell; many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren; siblings, Frances Stephenson of Florida, James Burchette of Otsego, Kay Evans of Arkansas, Richard Burchette of Florida and Carmen Rayman of Alamo; an uncle, Lawrence “Sonny” Roebuck of Florida; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Joseph Miner, III; and two daughters, Leatha Burkhead and Brenda Dean. Her family will greet friends from 1 to 3PM Saturday at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego where Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 P.M., Minister Richard Wiley officiating.
