Otsego Gets a Helping Hand On Wednesday, November 14, Otsego Chamber members and city officials celebrated the opening of Home Helpers. Al and Carol Lust have lived in the Otsego/Plainwell area for almost 30 years. They opened the Home Helpers in Otsego in November 2002, and operated for the first ten years out of an office in their home. They started the business after they experienced how challenging it was to get enough help for their own parents who lived in Ohio and had to battle pancreatic cancer, stroke, near blindness, and dementia in the later years of their lives. Problems may differ from family to family, and it is understandable that people would be skeptical of strangers coming into the home, but the Lusts have made wonderful connections with hundreds of families over the last 10 years and are hoping to be able to help even more in the next decade. Recognizing the need for a better space for caregiver training and a more visible local presence, they took the plunge and leased the office space at 111 S. Farmer St in downtown Otsego. The need for practical, reliable and compassionate in-home assistance is not going away, and, in fact, is
increasing. Home Helpers of Otsego currently employs about 35 caregivers and 3 administrative staff to help families in Allegan and Kalamazoo counties and nearby areas with services such as personal care, meal prep, shopping, errands, housework and laundry. Home Helpers is part of a national franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio that has nearly doubled in size in the last five years. There are over 650 offices in the network so that referrals can come from all across the country. Otsego officials welcome Friends Furniture Home Decor and Gifts with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Owner Donna Anderson cuts the ceremonial ribbon. On November 14th, 2012 Otsego welcomed a new consignment shop, Friends Furniture Home Decor and Gifts to 109 Farmer Street, downtown Otsego. Owner Donna Anderson’s love of painting furniture and collecting unique items gave her the inspiration for her consignment store. The store carries sofas, tables and chairs, lamps, hutches, pictures and decorative chairs. The store is not limited to just furniture and home decor but also carries purses and jewelry as well as some antiques. Donna has reason for choosing to open in Otsego - a great small town and friendly people top her list. Another
reason is she believes in being active in making change and seeing growth in this community. She is willing to go out of her way to serve customers, offering pick-up and delivery of merchandise. CLEAR A PATH “A voice of one calling: ‘In the desert prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God” – Isaiah 40:3 In the days of the prophet Isaiah, when a King came into an area, breakers were sent into the land to remove barriers so the King could enter. The purpose was not only to make traveling easier, but to clear a path which would be a lasting tribute to the King. Likewise, the season of Advent (“coming”) on the church calendar reminds us to prepare ourselves for the coming of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. The world was not prepared for His first coming. Will we be prepared for His second coming? Now, as then, there are “wars and rumors of war,” widespread poverty and a spiritual hunger for God. We can clear a path by repenting of our sins (personal and national). We can prepare for His coming by praying “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”We can prepare for His coming by offering our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. Jesus told a story about being ready. It’s the story of ten bridesmaids (Matthew 25:1-13). There was a wedding but the groom was late. In the meantime, the bridesmaids fell asleep. Finally, “at midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet Him!’” (25:6). Immediately they arose to trim their lamps, but the oil in their lamps was burned up. Five prepared ahead by bringing extra oil. The other five were not ready and therefore missed the wedding. The only way to prepare for tomorrow is to live faithfully today. I am thinking of the words of that old gospel song: “Are you dressed for the wedding? Have you washed your robe? Are you dressed for the banquet? Are you ready to go? Are your lamps trimmed and burning with the Spirit’s light? Are you ready for the wedding if the groom comes tonight? Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to be ready.“O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel” (Phillips Brooks). Let us help you prepare for the true meaning of Christmas by worshiping with us this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.

This doesn't look like your average book club, but don't judge a book by its cover. A new club for boys is fostering an increased interest in reading and is showing them the value inside the pages. Wednesday afternoon during recess, about ten boys decided to forego the playground and instead hang out in the Media Center. It was the first meeting of the Boys’ Book Club at Washington Street Elementary. Title I tutor Robert Sousley is leading the group, “The goal of the club is to familiarize boys with texts that they would enjoy reading and to show them positive male role models who express how they use reading skills in their life,” he explains. The club will meet once a month; any fourth or fifth grade boy can join. They meet during recess and also all eat lunch together on that day, “Every meeting we will have a guest speaker that works in a field that would be of interest to the boys. The speaker will talk about what they do and how reading is involved.” Larry Davidson, of Davidson Express, was the club’s first guest speaker. He also described to the boys how making contact with different motorcycle magazines and getting involved with them has helped his business.” Davidson gave each boy a Harley Davidson pin as well which brought out a lot of "cool, thank you" comments. In addition to a guest speaker, the boys have an open forum to talk about whatever books they are currently reading or their interests of what they might like to read; they are not all reading the same book but rather discussing their current selection. WSE Principal Heather Badders was introduced to the concept at a national conference where a principal started a similar group to get boys more interested in reading, “It helped improve their reading skills and also gave them another group of boys to bond with,” she says. Badders also explains how innately, boys are less interested in reading than girls, “and libraries are often built for girls.” But there is now a new section at the WSE Media Center designed for the boys. “There are books with shiny green and blue covers that are all about things boys like,” she says such as cars and trucks and adventures. This club will also have a say in the books that go there as they begin to read more. While test scores aren’t the driving force of this club, it could likely be a positive side effect. “I started to research texts that boys would find interesting and I ran across some facts about boys’ literacy,” Sousley explains. “Boys are consistently performing worse than girls on reading tests nation-wide; boys need to see that reading is a valuable skill and can be an enjoyable use of time.” The turn-out for the first meeting was good, “The boys seemed to enjoy themselves and I’m optimistic that positive word-of-mouth will bring more to the club for the next meeting.” If any boy is interested, they can talk to their teacher, Mr. Sousley or Mrs. Badders.

Rachel J. CARY “Grandma Buddy” AGE 82 - OTSEGO
Mrs. Cary passed away Monday, November 26, 2012 in Kalamazoo. She was born December 10, 1929 in South Haven to Orlo and Melba (Dunfield) Fletcher. For 30 years she was employed as a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office and had also driven school bus for the Otsego Public Schools for several years. Rachel was an avid golfer and had made two holes in one. She also enjoyed fishing, hunting and visits to the casino. She was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #3030 Ladies Auxiliary. On June 18, 1948 in Otsego she married Ronald “Nick” Cary, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters and a son, Judy (Chuck) Moore of Otsego, June (Fred) Haddix of Pine Lake and Jim (Tina) Cary of Shelp Lake; 13 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Paul “Pete” (Bunny) Cary; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George Fletcher. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held at V.F.W. Post #3030, Otsego from 1:00 to 3:00pm on Saturday, December 8, 2012. Burial of ashes will take place at Mountain Home Cemetery, Otsego. Contributions in memory of Rachel may be made to Wings of Hope Hospice or VFW Post #3030 Ladies Auxiliary. Arrangements by Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Rod loved to sing, play bass & record music with his friends. He also loved to ride his Harley, eat hotdogs and hunt. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at Gun Plain Township Hall on Saturday, Dec. 8th from 1pm-3pm with Pastor Dave Nycamp officiating.

Betty Ailene James, age 94, passed away at home, Sunday, November 25, 2012. She was born September 22, 1918, daughter of Hobart and Lucille Hale. She graduated from Richland Agricultural School in 1936, spent one year at Western State Teachers College and one year at Parsons Business College. She was employed as secretary and telephone operator in Prairieville, Delton and Augusta until dial phones were adopted. Betty worked 38 years at Brown Co. and Georgia Pacific Co., then 24 years with State Theater and four outlying theaters. She retired at age 84. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Walter James and Everett Conklin; and brother, Sydney Hale. She is survived by step-children, Thomas (Zadie) Conklin, David (Kathy) Conklin, Mary (Dale) York and Kerry (Kathy) Conklin; sister-in-law, Wilma Hale; cousins, Stuart Akon and Maxine Conibear; and nephews, Donald and Dennis Hale; 13 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. The family appreciates the many hours of love and care these past 8 years given by good friend and P.O.A., Gail Brock; special care giver, Janelle Quigley; Steven Cutler, friend from California, who sent many cards and calls of encouragement; Senior Services; Absolute Care; Dr. Born and staff; Hospice and Meals on Wheels. Betty donated her body to the University of Michigan Medical School. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 10, 2012, at Family Worship Center, Church of God, 5841 East H Ave., with Bishop Lane Davis and Rev. Kerry Conklin officiating. Burial of ashes will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Plainwell at a later date. Contributions in memory of Betty may be made to TCT Ministries, Inc. P.O. Everette P. SCHMIDT AGE 82
Born on June 23, 1930 - died November 25, 2012 at home surrounded with his loved ones at his side. Raised in Kendall, MI he met the love of his life, Patricia Way, who he married on October 21, 1950 and has shared 62 wonderful years with. He served in the Korean War from 1951-1953 as a PFC in the US Army. Upon returning he worked 13 years at KVP followed by 31 years at General Motors Kalamazoo as a welder. Together they had six wonderful children; Bridget (Kevin) Rex, Rick (Joyce) Schmidt, Denise Schmidt, Randy (Cheryl) Schmidt, Jody (Steve) Cobble and Marcie (Rudy) Torres. He also had many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who each had a very special place in his heart. He also had a very special love for their little dog Sophie. Everette loved working around the house and out in the yard. He always had a simple wave or smile to anyone that went by. Everyone who knew him loved him very quickly. Cremation has already taken place at his request. In lieu of flowers, all donations can be made to Wings of Hope Hospice, Allegan.
Rosemary passed away Monday, November 26, 2012 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo surrounded by her loving family. Rosie was born March 30, 1951 in Kalamazoo, MI the daughter of Antonio and Norma (Scotese) Dacoba. Rosie was a big part of La Cantina, the family business, since childhood and was a dedicated speech therapist working with pre-school aged children for many years. She loved traveling, raising dogs and loved meeting people everywhere she went. Rosie was a very kind hearted and generous woman who loved her Paw Paw community, neighborhood and adored all of her friends and family. On April 28, 1983 in San Jose, CA Rosie was united in marriage to her loving and devoted husband, Peter D’Arienzo, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Christopher (Becca) D'Arienzo; mother, Norma Dacoba; sister, Ava (Roman) Plaszczak; brothers, Tony (Debbie) Dacoba and Emilio (Maria) Dacoba; nieces, Isabella Dacoba and Alicia (Armeen) Parsayar; great nephew, Antonio Parsayar. She was preceded in death by her father. A memorial mass will be held on Tuesday (12/4), 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Paw Paw with Rev. Fr. Joseph Xavier and Rev. Fr. Robert F. Creagan concelebrants. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Southwest Michigan or the Paw Paw Alumni Association.

Joan passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012, in Kalamazoo. Joan was born April 24, 1946 in Kalamazoo to Reinert and June Maxine (Owen) DeVries. She was a 1965 graduate of Portage Northern High School. For 10 years she was employed with Dickerson’s Greenhouse in Bloomingdale and then was employed with the Plainwell Wal-Mart as a greeter for 14 years. Joan enjoyed working and never forgot a birthday, always sending a card. Surviving are her siblings, Al (Nancy) DeVries of Kalamazoo, Carol (Steve) Town of Bloomingdale and Nancy (Bruce) Newton of Hastings; her brother-in-law, Dwight Replogle of Delton; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Janet K. Replogle. Friends may visit with Joan’s family from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, November 30, 2012 at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego. Burial will take place at 10:30 A.M. Saturday at Mount Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Kalamazoo. Contributions in memory of Joan may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
Wayne passed away Monday, November 19, 2012 at his home. He was born May 25, 1956, in Midland to Virgil and Bonnie (Hiliker) Jankowiak. For 4 years he served his country in the U. S. Army and for many years was employed at auto parts buffing and polishing. Wayne was good hearted and always enjoyed an opportunity to help others. Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Wayne (Samantha Kozlik) Jankowiak of Shelbyville, MI, Dennis (Ruth) Jankowiak of Clarksville, TN, and Jennifer (Dan) Lay of Lowelll, MI; 9 grandchildren; 1 greatgranddaughter; 2 brothers, Ed (Jessie) Jankowiak and Bill (Deb) Jankowiak, both of Allegan, MI; a sister Amy (Mike) Pett of Lowell, MI; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bonnie and Virgil Jankowiak; and two brothers, Ken Jankowiak and Virgil Jankowiak. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in celebration of Wayne’s life was held Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, with Pastor Greg Carlson officiating. Military Honors were conducted by V.F.W. Eleanor passed away Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at Borgess Gardens in Kalamazoo. Eleanor was born June 3, 1918, in Martin, the daughter of Stanley and Louise (Noteboom) Brown. She was a life member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Watson. She graduated from Martin High School in 1936. Surviving are her 6 children; Ken and Mary Knuth, Nancy and Roger Hilaski, Daniel and Ginja Knuth, Richard and Nancy Priest, Ronald and Margaret Priest, Melody and Ron Gordon, 24 grandchildren, many great and great great grandchildren, her brother, Harry Brown, sisterin-law, Bea Brown, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Eleanor was preceded in death by her husbands; Elmer Knuth and Donald Priest, 2 brothers; Howard and William, her sister, Mildred McGuire, and her grandson, Brian. Friends may meet with the family on Friday, November 30, from 5-8pm at the Gorden Funeral Residence, Hopkins Chapel, where the Rosary will be recited at 5pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Watson, on Saturday at 11am. Rev. Fr. Harold Potter, Celebrant. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery, Hopkins Twp.
