Shop Small! 2012 Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 strengthen the economic base of the community. (For summaries of a variety of economic impact studies and case studies showing that locally-owned businesses generate a premium in enhanced economic impact to the community and our tax base visit sustainableconnections.org/thinklocal/why.) 2. Support community groups: Nonprofit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. 3. Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust 4. Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. 5. Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. 6. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.

Why Buy Locally Owned? There are many well-documented benefits to our communities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so we merely ask you to Think Local FIRST! Top Ten reasons to Think Local - Buy Local - Be Local 1. Buy Local -- Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms -- continuing to

7. Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. 8. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. 9. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the longterm. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. 10. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

Think local first + Buy local when you can = Being a local!

Fun tech gifts that bring out the creativity in any child (Family Features) Looking for some creative gift ideas for the kids on your holiday list? Why not give them gifts that encourage creativity? "Creativity in kids isn't about being accomplished artists," said Michelle Atkinson, Vice President, North America Marketing for Energizer. "It's about expressing themselves in unique ways. It's important to give them the power to create - and the holidays are the perfect opportunity to do just that." Here are some great ideas for high tech gifts that will give your kids plenty of fun as they explore new ways to create. Digital Drawing - With the Crayola Digital Light Designer, kids make drawings from light (ages 6 to 15 years). They use a stylus to draw on the dome - and watch their images magically light up on a three-dimensional surface. They can add cool effects and animations, and personalize drawings and messages to display later. It also has a game and activity mode, which makes for hours of creative fun. Runs on four D alkaline batteries. Consider Energizer(r) Max(r) batteries with Power Seal Technology, which hold their power for up to 10 years on shelf - and that give kids confidence they'll have the power to create whenever they want. Learn more at www.energizer.com. Look for art games for their favorite gaming system. "Let's Draw!" and "Art Academy" for Nintendo DS, or "uDraw" for Wii or Xbox 360 are fun choices, and they are rated E for Everyone.

Photography Fun - The KidTough See Yourself Camera from Fisher-Price (ages 3 to 7 years). There's a rotating lens which swivels from front to back, making it easy for even the little ones to see what they're shooting. It has big buttons, child-friendly controls, and stores up to 1,000 photos. You can download stampers and special effects to edit their photos. It connects to your computer via USB port. Runs on four AA batteries. For older kids, try the Discovery Night Vision Camcorder, from The Discovery Channel (ages 6 and up). A three megapixel video recorder and digital camera uses infrared technology to light up the night. It has a night vision sensor, LCD display, four photo resolutions, built-in microphone, AV output, and USB and AV connection cable. Memory card not included. Runs on four AA batteries. Music Makers - The Learning Tunes Karaoke from VTech lets kids sing to 15 fun songs (ages 3 to 6 years). It has letter songs, number songs and fun songs, a microphone, a voice changer with 5 different effects, and an LCD screen with a variety of facial expressions and animations that change as kids sing along. Runs on three AA batteries. The Little Tikes Pop Tunes Guitar makes them feel like a rock star (ages 2 to 6 years). With preset tunes, a light-up pickguard and speaker cover, and a whammy bar that triggers three different sound effects, the jam session has endless possibilities for fun. Runs on three AA batteries.

Holiday Gifts on a Budget For travel lovers For those on your list who love to hit the road and explore new territories, consider gifts that will make their travel more enjoyable. Passport covers, camera accessories, travel journals, or a mini alarm clock are all great options that won't break the bank. You can also give them items that will remind them of their explorations. Put together a gift basket of exotic chocolates and shelf-safe foods to remind them of their favorite flavors from abroad. Or you can remind them of one of the best parts of travel - the feeling of relaxation and getting away. Body washes with a refreshing scent, such as the new moisturizing Softsoap Citrus Splash & Berry Fusion, will transport recipients to warm days and exotic locales. Combine with a selection of personal care products, such as facial masks and moisturizers to help them transform their bathroom into a mini-vacation abroad.

(MediaResourceCenter.com) From family and friends to teachers and coaches, finding the perfect present for everyone on your list can be a daunting task. But with a little creativity, you can find a great gift without breaking your budget.

Choosing the Perfect Gift The key to finding the perfect present? Taking time to consider what your loved one most cherishes. Do they favor a specific hobby? How do they spend their free time? If you're picking a gift for someone you might not know well, such as your child's teacher or school nurse, consider giving them something to help them unwind and relax. Here are some ideas to get you started: For teachers, school nurses and coaches The role models in your child's life are often the people that would benefit most from a pampering present. Help them indulge in some relaxation by packaging up a basket of spainspired items. Moisturizing beauty products with seasonal scents - such as the Softsoap Wintermint Wonderland and Enchanting Sugar Plum body washes - will keep skin smooth and glowing throughout the season's festivities and conjure up images of favorite winter memories. Bundle with a lush loofah, mini manicure and pedicure kit, facial mask and lotion for a basket filled with items that will give them the opportu-

nity to treat themselves to a little "me" time. Homemade treats and photo collages are also great gift options. For cooking and baking enthusiasts For your favorite foodie, consider giving some fun and affordable kitchen tools, such as ninja gingerbread cookie cutters. If your loved one is known for their savory cuisine, consider purchasing an assortment of spices to add to their favorite dishes. Likewise, a new cookbook will help inspire creativity in the kitchen and add a dash of excitement to their regular recipe routine.

Craft & Antique Mall It is simply the best place to shop for the Holidays!

For the kiddos When purchasing gifts for very young children, look for brightly colored toys that play music or offer an interactive element. Stuffed animals, baby blankets and clothing are great options as well. For adolescents, teens and in-be-tweens It's hard to stay on top of the trends most pre-teens and teenagers are in tune with. Instead, opt for something you know they'll enjoy. Consider giving a gift certificate to a movie theater or popular store where they can purchase electronics, clothing or sporting equipment. If you have your heart set on a tangible present, remember to request a gift receipt, just in case. Need Some Thanksgiving Dinner Conversation? Some facts about Thanksgiving you may not know... cream scoops and began creating minifeasts of turkey, corn-bread dressing, peas and sweet potatoes — creating the first-ever TV dinner. Thomas later said he got the idea from neatly packaged airplane food.

The First TV Dinner Was Thanksgiving Leftovers In 1953, someone at Swanson severely overestimated the amount of turkey Americans would consume that Thanksgiving. With 260 tons of frozen birds to get rid of, a company salesman named Gerry Thomas ordered 5,000 aluminum trays, recruited an assembly line of women armed with spatulas and ice-

"Franksgiving” FDR learned the hard way not to mess with some traditions. In 1939, the President declared that Americans should celebrate the annual feast one week early, hoping the decision would spur retail sales during the Great Depression. But Americans did not react kindly to the New Deal meal. Some took to the streets while others took to namecalling; the mayor of Atlantic City solved the controversy by declaring his residents

would simply enjoy two meals — Thanksgiving and "Franksgiving." After two years of squabbling (or gobbling, as it were), Congress adopted a resolution in 1941 setting the fourth Thursday of November as the legal holiday.

Taken by an online article by M.J. STEPHEY for TIME Magazine at www.time.com

Thanksgiving is ruled by two very powerful f-words: "food" and "football." Nearly as old as the sport itself, the tradition of watching football on Thanksgiving began in 1876, when the newly formed American Intercollegiate Football Association held its first championship game. Less than a decade later, more than 5,000 club, college and high school football teams held games on Thanksgiving, with match-ups between Princeton and Yale drawing more than 40,000 fans out from their dining rooms. 1934 marked the first NFL game held on Thanksgiving when the Detroit Lions

Words of Faith & Hope DO YOU NEED AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT? “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2) A few years ago our grandchildren (ages five and three at the time) were with us at our cottage. Playing outside, Ella came running into the cottage saying, “Grandma, I think Jack is having another attitude problem.” Childish behavior has a way of following us in our adult lives. It is something, regardless of our age, we must keep a constant check on. Consider three areas of our lives which are driven by our attitudes. 1. Relationships 2. Performance 3. World View As for relationships, Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God, others AND ourselves (Luke 10:27). It begins with ourselves. Self-respect (as opposed to conceit) gives us a healthy respect for God and others. As for performance, someone asked the baseball great, Babe Ruth, what he felt like when he struck out. His response was, “I never think about striking out.” As for world view, there is the story about a reporter who interviewed some men working at a construction site. One man was working rather lazily and the reporter asked, “What are you making?” He answered, “Four dollars an hour.” A second man was working rather routinely. The reporter asked, “What are you making?” The man answered, “Five dollars an hour.” A third man was working enthusiastically, conscientiously, putting his heart and soul into his work. The reporter asked, “What are you making?” And he said, “A cathedral!” Do you need an “attitude adjustment”? If so, start with yourself. Ask God to renew your life by the transforming of your mind. And remember this. “Attitude is your paintbrush. It colors every situation.” Prayer: Dear Lord, please come into my life and make me more like You. In Jesus’ name. Amen Peace to you and please join us for worship this Sunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived. Rev. Dan Minor, Pastoral friend & colleague of Rev. Joe Shaler Sponsored In Part by:

NOVEMBER is...

Homelessness Awareness Month

By helping Christian Neighbors help others,

YOU MAY WIN!!

A few stories of serving homeless families this year... “I moved here from another state about a year ago to care for my grandmother. When my grandmother passed away this last summer, I found myself with no housing and no income. I slept wherever I could; yes, I did sleep in my car. I came to Christian Neighbors to find out what assistance may be available. I have a job now working as a home health aide. Through collaborative resources, I will now have housing, be able to access a food pantry, and I am currently attending school to get my high school diploma.” “When my wife left me, I found myself homeless with two children. Christian Neighbors was able to help me find housing and help me with food for my children. They took away the embarrassment that I felt as I had never experienced being homeless and not knowing where to turn for help.” As fall settles in with winter around the corner, take a moment to be thankful for the security of your home, family and neighborhood. Be challenged to remember those who may be struggling or may not know where they will sleep tonight. Christian Neighbors has been serving the most vulnerable individuals and households within our community since 1983.
