KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup It’s the second time that the PWA world tour event is taking place in Scandinavia. Last year, the event was also held in Klitmøller, the capital of Cold Hawaii. Klitmøller is an obvious choice when it comes to a World Cup in windsurfing in Denmark. The area in and around Klitmøller has been the center for windsurfing, in both Denmark and most of northern Europe, for the last 20 years. Special ocean conditions and a powerful westerly wind have given the area in the northwest of Jutland, and especially Klitmøller, a unique reputation throughout the world, as a perfect (but hard-core) area for windsurfing and surfing. Cold Hawaii Every year, the PWA arranges the PWA World Tour – the world championship for the best windsurfers. There are several disciPWA World Cup plines, and in the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup competition, the windsurfers will be competing in Wave Performance. Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller

Wave Performance counts as the premier league of all windsurfing disciplines. The participants 7700 are judged Thistedon their performances in jumping and wave riding. For the sub-discipline, Jumping, the judging criteria include, for example, the23degree Tlf. 20 78 72 of difficulty and the execution of several maneuvers. For wave performance, it’s a matter of determining how well the sailors are riding and interrobert@coldhawaii.eu acting with a wave, especially considering the additional power they achieve through use of thewww.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup sail. The wave discipline is a man-against-man competition, which is decided by a knockout system. The best riders go through to the next round until there are just two left: the final showdown of the ultimate windsurfers. Follow the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup: www.worldcup.coldhawaii.eu www.twitter.com/coldhawaii www.bambuser.com/channel/coldhawaii http://www.youtube.com/user/coldhawaiiworldcup http://www.flickr.com/photos/coldhawaiiworldcup www.pwaworldtour.com

The first PWA World Cup in Scandinavia Even though Cold Hawaii is known to have special ocean conditions and a powerful westerly wind, there was no guarantee that the weather conditions would be suitable during the last stop in the PWA World Cup in Klitmøller. Fortunately, the natural conditions were almost perfect for a windsurfing competition in this league – the wind was strong almost every day and the waves were high. The atmosphere at Cold Hawaii was filled with energy, and has been so ever since last year. Now, Cold Hawaii is no longer just something that the locals and surfers know about – it is something that the whole of Denmark knows about. The goal last year was not only to create a windsurfing event under the PWA World Tour, that would be remembered and renowned within the windsurfing society, but also to let the general public have a piece of the action. Press releases and other material were streamed out to mainstream media in Denmark long before the event started. The organization behind the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup put a lot of effort into making the local community feel that this event was theirs, and something they could benefit from. This proved to be a good move, and this year the support has surpassed the organization’s expectations. The thing that made the event in 2010 extraordinary was the live, interactive aspect. The media coverage of the event in 2010 reached almost 20 million people, shared over both mainstream and core media. The expected media coverage in 2011 is on the same level, again divided over mainstream and core media, both nationally and internationally. News Since last year, there has been a massive change on the waterfront at Klitmøller. As part of a big project called “The Good Coast Life”, Klitmøller has been a busy building site over the whole summer. A path now provides an easy route for people on foot from the big parking site to the competition area at the end of Ørhagevej, which is where the biggest change has happened! The old NASA Surf Club House was torn down in the spring, and now an exciting new building is the talking point of the area. This will be the main location for the Press Office, and we can’t wait to show off this great new venue when the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup starts.

The Sport of Windsurfing

Denmark and Europe investing in rural areas Denmark and Europe investing in rural areas

Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup

Windsurfing was presented as a new sport discipline in California in the late 60s by the sailor,Ørhagevej Jim Drake and the surfer, Hoyle 1, Klitmøller 7700 Thisted Schweitzer. The two of them invented the “free sailing system”, which initially made use of hand-built equipment. Tlf. 20 78 23 72 The sport of windsurfing combines elements of sailing and surfing in a unique way, making it robert@coldhawaii.eu possible to surf almost anywhere www.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup

with wind and water. Today, windsurfing has developed into various forms and disciplines, and the equipment is designed for every kind of windsurfing style.

The popularity of windsurfing has made it an international competition sport, and today, professional windsurfers are organized under the international association, PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association). The organization is responsible for laying down the rules within the individual disciplines of windsurfing, and for representing the sport worldwide. www.pwaworldtour.com

What gear does a pro windsurfer need? Board: The sailors will have several boards of various sizes with them. The windier it is, the smaller the board they will use. A typical board is around 230cm long and weighs 6kg. Sail: The sailors will bring sails of between 3.3m² and 5.7m² with them to Klitmøller. The windier it is, the smaller the sail they will be using. Mast: The masts are made of carbon fibre and are approximately 370cm long and weigh 1.5kg. Boom: The boom is the “handle” of the sail, and can be adjusted to fit different sail sizes. They are also made of carbon fibre. Wetsuit: The windsurfers wear a wetsuit, which is very flexible and 3–5mm thick, to protect them from the cold. Harness: In order to hold on to the sail for long periods of time, the sailors wear a harness around their waist.

Cold Hawaii Rules of the competition and points PWA Worldduring Cupthe heats. The judges can award the sailors anything from 1 to 12 points for the maneuvers or wave-rides they perform The number of points awarded depends on three factors: 1: The type of maneuver. 2: The height of the jump or the size of the wave ridden. 3: How well the maneuver is executed.

Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller 7700 Thisted Tlf. 20 78 23 72 robert@coldhawaii.eu www.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup

Typically, a heat lasts for 8–10 minutes, followed by a 2-minute break, and then the next heat will begin. Depending on the conditions, the sailors will be scored on as many as three jumps and three wave-rides in a heat. They compete in a knockout system; the person with the most points wins and moves on to the next heat, until there are only two people left: the Final. The competition system The 48 sailors are placed in a “single elimination”, with four people on the water in each heat and the best two advancing. The best 16 are seeded through to the second round, meaning that the 32 people seeded 17–48 will be facing each other in the first round and the winners move on to Round 2 and then face the sailors seeded in the top 16. When the “single elimination ladder” is over, we have a winner. BUT it might not be all over at this point. If the conditions allow it, the rules provide an opportunity to run what is called a “double elimination”, in which all the competitors get a second chance. If a double elimination is run, then the person who wins is the final winner of the event. If the double elimination is not completed, then the result of the single elimination stands. So, as they say, “It’s not over until the fat lady sings!” The moves To impress the judges, the competitors will attempt various different maneuvers, such as: •

Front Loop: The sailor throws himself into a forward spin in which he is completely upside down.

Back Loop: The sailor steers into the wind to rotate 360º and land back on his feet.

Push Loop: A push loop is also a backward rotation, but with a twist whereby the sailor is on top of his equipment in mid-air.

Double Front Loop: An extremely difficult jump in which the sailor goes into a very fast rotation and spins round twice before landing.

Push Loop/Back Loop: One of the highest scoring jumps, only a few people master this extremely difficult jump, with both a back AND a forward rotation.

Triple Front Loop: So far, nobody has achieved this move – will this event see the first triple loop landed?!

When the conditions are right, the sailors can fly up to as high as 10–15 meters above the water! On the way in, the sailors will be riding and gliding on the waves, on the steepest part of the wave to impress the judges! www.worldcup.coldhawaii.eu/competition-rules-moves

Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup

The KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup is committed to building popularity within the sport. ThisØrhagevej is emphasized through the event 1, Klitmøller tagline: 7700 Thisted “The most interactive live event on the circuit.”

Viewable and sharable We are proud to be able once again to present ACTIVE institute as one of our main partners. Together, we have developed yet another groundbreaking event website that will broadcast live from the competition.

Through the website, we’ll deliver high quality live streaming combined with an experienced and energetic commentator. We’ll also have interviews and conversations with competitors and key personnel. As part of the live streaming, it’ll be possible to chat live and ask questions, and sometimes “the stars” will join the conversation. Following a day of competition on the water, a podcast will also be released with highlights of the day’s events. These highlights will also be accessible over the internet, via a dedicated YouTube channel. In addition, there will be four dedicated mobile journalists (the ‘tweetamigos’) who will be equipped with smartphones and will provide behind-the-scenes coverage of the event through a combination of text, images and short video clips. Last but not least, our Facebook community, evolving around our mascot, the Cold Hawaii Penguin, will be a hub for lots of fun, including sweepstakes with some pretty nice prizes. Understandable The KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup website is enhanced this year with more focus on a new system that improves the exposure of scoring, thus revealing what scores have been awarded in each heat, immediately after the heat is over. Furthermore, the system will make it possible to get a quick overview of who’s competing against whom and the current state of the competition. This makes the competition more transparent and is a step on the way to creating the ultimate goal: a live scoreboard. Reviewable All content will be presented in an easy-to-use archive, making it possible (at any time, and after each day’s competition) to obtain an overview of moving images as well as race data, highlights, photos and text.

Memolane

Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller

In 2011 we are excited to announce that we’re working together with the company behind Memolane, a promising Danish online 7700 Thisted social service based in San Francisco. All competitors, as part of the accreditation process, are encouraged Tlf. 20 78 23to 72create a Memolane account. This will make it possible for all sailors to engage with the online community and contribute their personal experiences robert@coldhawaii.eu of the competition; and, most importantly, it will also make it very easy for spectators to see anwww.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup overview and follow the activities of particular competitors.

The future Wave Performance is an exciting, demanding and spectacular sport, which nevertheless has problems in finding ways to make itself accessible to the public. We believe that part of the solution to this lies in new technology and new media. In this respect, the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup Website is the latest element in our contribution to that development. The KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup Website once again provides a new foundation for the coverage of windsurfing. Combined with smart integration of existing online social services, a well-thought-out concept and a dedicated crew, it hopes to raise the visibility of the sport significantly. We are therefore looking forward to giving sailing enthusiasts an insight into our innovative process, and seeing the results presented through the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup in Klitmøller. The Cold Hawaii

Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup

It’s like Hawaii – only colder. Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller Cold Hawaii is not a single surfing spot, but 29 registered surfing sports which are all located on7700 the west coast of Thisted MuniciThisted pality. North Cold Hawaii is bounded by Viksoe Rallejer and the Hanstholm coastal slope, and in the Tlf.south 20 78by 23the 72 Agger Tongue. The robert@coldhawaii.eu KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup is held at The Reef, which is one of the most famous spots, and is located in Klitmøller – better www.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup known as the capital of Cold Hawaii. Klitmøller, the capital of Cold Hawaii Klitmøller is a small fishing town on the northwest coast of Denmark. As with any other community dependent on the fishing industry, the village has experienced some hard times, trying to stay alive and attractive, due to the centralization of the industry. Today, the demographic statistics of the village present an unusually positive picture of a fringe area in modern Denmark: people are increasingly moving to the region, both from Denmark and from other countries. These people are often families with small children, and many of them are also highly educated and professional. The village of Klitmøller is today part of the “Thy National Park” area. Thisted Municipality is a unique place for outdoor sports, and Klitmøller has been a popular windsurfing destination the last two decades. Thisted Municipality wanted to improve matters further, and luckily a group of dedicated surfers realized that they had to consider the tensions between the surfers and the local population seriously. Therefore, they initiated a project that took the needs of both parties into account. In 2007, the project resulted in a long-term development strategy called the Cold Hawaii Masterplan. The plan is to integrate the general surfing population into the local society. One of the main goals was the realization of a major windsurfing event in Thisted Municipality; or, more specifically, the hosting of a PWA World Cup event. Thisted Municipality has been active in providing excellent conditions for surfers. Besides being engaged in the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup, the municipality has partnered with the Realdania foundation. Together, they have contributed 60 million Danish kroner. The money has been placed in the “Land of Opportunities” project, one of whose main aims is to make the area more suitable for surfing. In Klitmøller, this has resulted in a new dedicated surfing pavilion, a new beach promenade and better access to the beach. Klitmøller is proud not only to be a part of the continuing growth, but also to be the known center of a mecca for outdoor activities. Cold Hawaii Masterplan: www.coldhawaii.eu www.mulighedernesland.dk Did you know: • Klitmøller is the only town in Thisted Municipality that has positive population growth – precisely because of its unique surfing environment • Many foreign surfers have moved to Thisted Municipality to surf every day; many have since started a family and found work in the area • Thisted Municipality is Denmark’s leading green municipality: 100% of all electricity comes from renewable energy, and more than 80% of the heat is produced by biomass, geothermal, biogas and waste (www.climate.thisted.dk) • Klitmøller is located right in the middle of Denmark’s first national park – the location of a number of rare habitats – and provides good opportunities for outdoor activities Klitmøller

Volunteers welcome you to KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup

Tlf. 20 78 23 72 robert@coldhawaii.eu www.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup

KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup relies upon the support of EU funding and national and municipal departments, as well as international firms and local shopkeepers. However, the event is realized primarily as a result of the strong volunteer efforts that are provided by the Cold Hawaii community through the NASA (North Atlantic Surf Association) surf club. Over many years of preparations, NASA has been the main force behind the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup event, and now, for the second time, the surf club can open the doors to the ultimate windsurfing competition. The KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup event is the second PWA World Tour event to be held in Scandinavia. Only once before has such a major sporting event been held in this part of Denmark, and even though we feel well prepared, please keep in mind that this is still a new experience for us and respect the fact that every Cold Hawaii staff member is a volunteer.

Main Sponsors The Municipality of Thisted It is not without good reason that the Municipality of Thisted is sponsoring the event for the second time. Henrik Jensen, from Thisted Municipality Commerce and Development Department, confirms that the World Cup is very positive for the area: “First and foremost, ‘Cold Hawaii’ and the associated World Cup creates a lot of positive publicity for Thisted Municipality, both nationally and internationally. Thisted Municipality is increasingly being linked with the name ‘Cold Hawaii’. The name is well known throughout the world, and neither the name nor the unique nature of the area, and the experiences attached to it, can be copied by others. The considerable publicity creates greater interest among both tourists and potential settlers.” In this way, the World Cup goes hand in hand with the local focus areas, as it has a positive impact on labor, experience economy and year-round tourism. In fact, Cold Hawaii was recently elected as one of the largest growth potentials in Danish tourism. Thisted is the “capital” of Thisted Municipality, the area reaching from Thyborøn in the south to Lild Strand in the north. The district of Thisted brands itself as “the Danish climate district,” especially thanks to its attention to wind power. In the Thisted area, 100% of all energy is produced by renewable energy sources – with a focus on waves, too. Henrik Jensen comments, “Could the link to Cold Hawaii and KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup be more clear?” The district of Thisted encompasses the first Danish national park and 226km of coastline. In relation to this, the district policy has a strong environmental focus and a long-term development strategy, which is about to be realized through the support of outdoor activities. Cold Hawaii Sport Event Denmark Sport Event Denmark was a sponsor for the PWA World Cup in Klitmøller last year, and is ready to support the event PWA World Cupagain this year. Lars Lundov, Chief Executive, comments:

Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller 7700 Thisted “The 2011 KIA@coldhawaii PWA World Cup is an interesting event for three reasons. First of all, event is one of the highest Tlf. the 20 78 23 72 ranked and most prestigious series within the sport of Wave Windsurfing; secondly, the event has solid local/regional support and robert@coldhawaii.eu www.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup the plan for the event is strategic; and thirdly, the event contains an innovative and groundbreaking means of event communica-

tion.” Strong event partners Regarding the majority of international sporting events, it is the relevant national sports federation in Denmark that bids for the events, often against fierce competition from other nations, and the international sports federation that eventually appoints the host. It is our goal for Denmark to become one of the significant sporting event nations in the future, and become known for its high professional standards in all aspects of sporting event management, for the benefit of athletes, leaders and spectators. The KIA @ coldhawaii PWA World Cup is one of the stepping stones to that goal. Beyond our co-funding of major international sporting events, Sport Event Denmark offers advisory services both at the bidding stage and when the events are being staged. The knowledge we gain is transferred across the many Danish sports federations, which are encouraged to adopt the numerous creative and often innovative ideas. Sport Event Denmark is the national catalyst in terms of bidding for and hosting major international sporting events in Denmark. We offer event organizers of World and European Championships etc. advisory services and financial support. Organizers of high-profile sports’ political congresses are also part of our target group. Sport Event Denmark has a long-standing relationship with the Danish sports federations, host cities, host regions and tourism organizations that helps establish the best possible conditions for hosting major international sporting events on home ground. Sport Event Denmark is funded by the Danish government, the National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation of Denmark, and Team Denmark. www.sporteventdenmark.com LAG Thisted Municipality-Mors, Denmark LAG Thisted Municipality-Mors consists of two districts, Thisted and Mors, in the northwestern part of Jutland. The LAG’s main vision is to develop Thisted Municipality-Mors to be “a world-class rural district” – a national and international center for outdoor life, with specific focus on elements such as wellness, sustainability, nature, experiences, arts, culture, leisure-time activities, or a lifestyle based on the natural strengths in the region. LAG Thisted Municipality-Mors supports projects with an international dimension and a local focus. The vision is implemented through two interconnected goals: improved quality of life and diversification of the economy in rural areas. As such, LAG Thisted Municipality-Mors incorporates the values that strengthen the body of a fringe area like Cold Hawaii. Last year, Laurids Mortensen from LAG Thisted Municipality-Mors declared that he was looking forward to seeing how Cold Hawaii, with an annual PWA World Cup event, was going to be both a huge benefit for the coastal villages in Thisted Municipality, and also supportive of the area and the economic life of the whole region. This year, he agrees with the intention to profile the area around Thy and the fact that an event like this can attract permanent residents. Municipality-Mors was happy to support KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup in 2010, and is doingCold so againHawaii in 2011 – it is effective!” PWA He concludes: “We are just so proud to take part again this year in placing our area on the global map!”World Cup Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller 7700 Thisted Tlf. 20 78 23 72 KIA robert@coldhawaii.eu After good publicity last year and a great event, KIA had no doubt that they would go for the titlewww.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup sponsorship again this year.

http://www.lag-thymors.dk/

“At KIA, we are incredibly proud of being involved as a title sponsor when the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup takes place in Klitmøller, mid-September,” says Mogens Lyngsø, Managing Director of Kia Import Denmark. “It will be the second time that the windsurfing World Cup is held in Scandinavia and we are sure that this year is going to be the best of its kind.” The car manufacturer is well known for its high environmental standards, and the director of KIA Import Denmark, Mogens Lyngsø, finds this profile appropriate for the expression of windsurfing as a sustainable sport that does not harm the environment. He says, “The dynamics, the courage, the intensity and the youthful atmosphere that surrounds the sport of windsurfing reflects many of the same values that are felt very strongly by the people at KIA.” http://www.kiamotors.dk/

Other Sponsors Bila How can a local company, or the local community, get positive results from an event like KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup? The Mors-based company Bila knows the answer to that question. Bila has chosen to sponsor the World Cup “…because KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup is a project that greatly supports the local area. But unlike many other events around the area of Thy, this event includes international advertisement for the local area, with participants coming from around the world,” says Bettina Dahlgård Mikkelsen, personal assistant to the CEO of Bila. She continues: “We believe that we can achieve two things at once by being a sponsor of the World Cup: both a promotion of ourselves, and also a means of increasing the visibility of the area within an environment that has a great deal to offer.” Bila was founded in Mors back in 1988. The company distributes Kawasaki robots throughout Scandinavia, employs 120 people and is a full service and project organization. Bila was first introduced to windsurfing, and thereby KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup, when it employed a Project Manager who was a member of the surfing community. One thing that helps to strengthen relationships between local businesses and KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup is the interest in the area around Thy that is awakened in many of the visitors to the World Cup, and generally in people who live all or part of their lives attached to surf culture. The entire culture around windsurfing is coming to Klitmøller, and the possibility that some people will consider settling down in the area – primarily because of the opportunities associated with the lifestyle of surfers – will thus be increased. Bettina Dahlgård Mikkelsen says: “I imagine that windsurfers are people who love what they do, and who manage to combine a good working life with a healthy leisure pursuit. They are people with a lot to offer, and we cannot have too many such people.” Sparekassen Thy The locally-based bank “Sparekassen Thy” is happy to support this event of worldwide importance for two reasons. According to the marketing manager Jens Thogersen, this is because “clever and serious people are organizing the event, and the direct live transmission through the internet provides a very valuable and positive exposure of the area of Thy.” He elaborates by saying that Klitmøller

11,000 savers invited to KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup Ørhagevej 1, Klitmøller In the new issue of the magazine for its guarantors, the bank presents a feature about KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup – and in 7700 Thisted particular the ability to follow the event through its own website. “It is our goal to make the WorldTlf. Cup easily and exiting 20 78 23accessible 72 for the many people who do not have special knowledge about the sport. On our website, www.sparthy.dk, we will send out live robert@coldhawaii.eu www.coldhawaii.eu/worldcup information from the event to the general public,” Jens Thogersen says. The 11,000 guarantors and other readers of the magazine are encouraged to visit the bank in its tent, which can be found on Ørhagevej during the event. Here, staff will explain what is happening, when, and what to pay attention to. Jens Thogersen explains: “This way, we will help to communicate the spectacular sport of windsurfing to the ordinary audience. […] Our goal is clear: more people must have a great experience when the world’s best windsurfers come to Thy”. Great local support The support for this year’s World Cup shows that it is worth investing in. Not only are last year’s sponsors loyal – and happy to support again – but KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup is attracting new sponsors too. As the support grows, the number of local and regional sponsors in particular has increased. The fact that they are showing interest and commitment means everything – it is what makes the event possible!
