THE WORLD CUP IN COLD HAWAII 2015 Once again, we would like to welcome you to the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup. This is a warm welcome to everyone who is taking part in this year’s event: Participants, audience, partners, sponsors, members and all of our volunteers. Since 2012, Friends of Cold Hawaii has been responsible for arranging the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup in Klitmøller, and we look forward to presenting an event that hopefully will be even more spectacular than in the previous years. We are pleased and proud that a long list of partners in Thy and Northern Jutland see the importance of hosting an event this significant in our area – an event that attracts both national and international attention. A lot of people are collaborating to make this possible. In more than one sense,

we are riding a wave of creativity, qualified work force, sustainable tourism, and most importantly a strong image of a completely unique position of strength in Denmark. This year, we are also very proud to present the Cold Hawaii Beer. The beer is brewed on the unique local qualities that are important parts of the Cold Hawaii concept. Our goal is to make the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup 2015 in Wave Performance a grand experience for everyone who is participating in the event. May the wind and waves help us create future development and energy in Cold Hawaii.

COLD HAWAII – DAY AND NIGHT This year, the world’s best windsurfers meet up in Klitmøller to fight for points in the World Championship in Wave Performance for the sixth time. With five successful years in a row, Cold Hawaii has become a regular destination on the world tour. This is because Cold Hawaii can deliver the wind and the waves that are needed to take a windsurfing competition to the next level! Furthermore, contributors, sponsors, members, advertisers and the team behind the event have once again provided an outstanding support for the event and the development that Cold Hawaii is a part of. Cold Hawaii has waves all year round and there is always something to discover here on the edge of the kingdom.

When the competition is on, all eyes are, of course, on the water and what is happening on the North Sea waves, but it is also important that the entertainment on land is just as exciting. Therefore, we are also proud to present an entertainment programme, which we hope will make your experience here in Klitmøller even better than before. WELCOME TO COLD HAWAII! I would like to welcome you to yet another edition of the Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup. Since the first edition of the World Cup in 2010, a lot has happened in Cold Hawaii. In the beginning, the name was mostly known within the surfing community, but thanks to a strong local effort and close cooperation between Friends of Cold Hawaii, Region Nordjylland, VisitNordjylland, Thisted Kommune and various other operators, Cold Hawaii has become so much more. The name is now widely well known, and even though many people still associate Cold Hawaii with Klitmøller and surfing, we also see an increasing perception of Cold Hawaii as a place that offers so much more.

activities like hiking, horseback riding, surfing, fishing, running, biking, swimming, kayaking, collecting amber and much more. Also, a lot of large events are taking place in Cold Hawaii: The Nationalpark Thy Marathon, the DM Surf Tour, a festival for winter swimmers and the Agger Athlon. And of course the cherry on top: The World Cup in Wave Performance, which steals the show in September. Since the World Cup in 2014, the new Cold Hawaii symbol with the jagged waves in blue and white, that you may have seen here and there, has been increasingly used in several collaborations. Latest, the symbol is used to decorate the new local Cold Hawaii Beer.

Cold Hawaii is the coast that stretches from Vigsø in the North to Agger in the South. In between lies the Thy National Park and the towns of Agger, Stenbjerg, Nr. Vorupør, Klitmøller, Hanstholm and Vigsø, that all offer various unique experiences involving nature and outdoor activities.

I can only say that I look forward in every possible way to hosting the World Cup again in September 2015. I hope you will have a chance to experience the area and make use of the many possibilities the area offers while the World Cup is taking place.

The 31 internationally renowned surf spots are clearly the foundation of Cold Hawaii, but the name also covers the ocean itself, the sandy beach, landing places for fishing boats, Denmark’s first national park (244 km2 of wild nature), Denmark’s first sea bath, sea fronts, piers and the Hummerhus. Generally speaking, Cold Hawaii offers spectacular and wild nature, authentic local communities, peace, quiet and action in one unique mix for anyone who loves to enjoy nature as the setting for activities or pure relaxation.

ABOUT KIA COLD HAWAII PWA WORLD CUP It is the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), which is responsible for the global World Cup in windsurfing. KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is the only Scandinavian stop on the prestigious PWA tour in wave-performance, which each year ends with the announcement of the new World Champion. The surfers visiting Klitmøller are the absolute best in the world, and they will be competing for important points at Ørhage and the legendary Cold Hawaii spot “The Reef”. 1. BOARD: The boards are made of a hard block of foam with a shell of glass and carbon fibres. The sailors typically bring 2-5 boards in different sizes for the competitions. The windier it is, the smaller the board. A typical board is around 230cm long and weighs 6kg. 2. SAIL: The sails are mainly made out of monofilm and nylon. In Klitmøller the sailors will be using sails of between 3.3m² and 5.7m². The windier it is, the smaller the sail they will use.

3. MAST: The masts are made of carbon fibre. They are approximately 370cm long and weigh around 1.5kg. 4. BOOM: Like the mast, the boom is also made of carbon fibre. The boom is the “handle” of the sail, and can be adjusted to fit different sail sizes.

5. WETSUIT: The sailors wear wetsuits made of neoprene, which are very flexible and 3â&#x20AC;&#x201C;5mm thick. The wetsuits protect them from the cold. 6. HARNESS: The harness is made of nylon and has a stainless steel hook. The windsurfers wear a harness around the hip in order to be able to hold on to the sail for longer periods of time. The harness can be attached to the boom, and thereby help relieve the windsurfers arms.

COMPETITION RULES AND POINTS The judges can award the sailors from 1 to 12 points for the manoeuvres or wave-rides they perform during each heat. The sailors are judged in two categories: jumps and wave riding.

The results from the single elimination determine the seeding in the double elimination, so that the winner of the single elimination meets the last man left in the double elimination, if the weather allows it.

Jumps are judged based on the level of difficulty, how well the jump is performed and how high it is. In the category of wave riding, the judgment is based on style and how big the wave is.

At this point the winner of the single elimination is still undefeated, while the last man left in the double elimination has lost one heat - the one he lost during the single elimination. Everyone else has lost two heats – one in the single elimination and one in the double elimination.

A heat typically lasts for 8–10 minutes, followed by a two-minute break, after which the next heat begins. Depending on the conditions, the sailors will be scored on up to three jumps and three wave-rides in a heat. They compete by the ‘knockout system’, meaning that the person with the most points wins and moves on to the next heat, until there are only two people left in the final.

If the winner of the single elimination defeats the last man left in the double elimination, he will win the competition. Everybody else will have lost two heats, apart from the winner of the single elimination, who has won all of his heats.

The 32 sailors are placed in a ‘single elimination’, with two people on the water in each heat. The winner of the heat will advance and move on to the next heat.

However, if the winner of the single elimination loses to the last man in the double elimination, the two of them will be tied, with two lost heats each. This will send them on to a ‘Super final’, where the winner of the heat will be the overall winner.

All sailors are seeded based on previous competitions. The seeding of the individual sailor determines who he will be competing against in the first heat.

The double elimination can, like the single elimination, run for several days. If the double elimination is impossible to finish, the result from the single elimination counts.

The single elimination can run for several days. When the single elimination ends, a winner is, technically, found.

That means that the winner of the KIA Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup is not found until the double elimination has been sailed, or the competition days are over.

However, it is possible for all the sailors to get a second chance. This happens if the weather is right, making it possible to carry out a ‘double elimination’.
