Thoughts from Jerald Gilbert, City Manager Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. On Saturday, November 11, we will honor American’s veterans for their sacrifice, patriotism, and service. I encourage you to support our veterans and their families by attending the scheduled events here in Enid. Also, consider visiting Oklahoma's official Vietnam War Memorial located at the Woodring Wall of Honor and Veterans Park here in Enid. As the quote on the plaque at the Vietnam Memorial Wall states, “Freedom is not free.” Take a moment to reflect on the blessings we enjoy living in this great country and remember all the sacrifices our veterans have made to preserve our freedom. Have a great Veterans Day!

In 1941, Army Lieutenant Colonel Albert Pitts took command of what was then unofficially known as the Air Corps Basic Flying School of Enid.
Today, Colonel Darrell F. Judy is commander of the 71st Flying Training Wing. He leads a wing of more than 2,700 personnel conducting joint specialized undergraduate pilot training for more than 400 U.S. Air Force and allied student pilots each year. The wing operates more than 220 aircraft, flies over 49,000 sorties annually and logs more than 71,000 flying hours yearly.
The base had various other names: 1942 – Enid Army Flying School 1943 – Enid Army Air Field 1948 – Enid Air Force Base 1949 – Vance Air Force Base
