WELCOME TO MY CORNWALL Cornwall is my inspiration for so many reasons. There’s a sense of peace, calm and beauty about the place which is so British, but heavenly too. I love splashing about by the shore, walking barefoot in the sand with my jeans turned up, and feeling the sea air against my skin –it’s revitalising! There are so many different nooks and crannies, and hidden corners in Cornwall too; it’s no wonder it’s such a favourite location for so many people. Cornwall is such a storybook place, it’s impossible not to write it into my stories, and be inspired by it too. It has this inherent sense of romance about the towns. Cornwall to me is a character; a living, breathing something that feeds me, my soul, my imagination. The blue skies, the grainy sand between your toes and the saltiness in your hair after being here a few days. I sleep well here, I smile more here. When you visit Cornwall something extra special stays with you long after you leave – and that’s what I hope I capture in my tales in Trevay. I want it to be like Cornwall. To be easy on the mind, for you to be as immersed in the story as you are with the place – and for it to have a happy ending of course. I love a tidy little ending where all the knots of the story come undone and tie beautifully together.

Reading is a bit like a holiday from your own life, and where else would I rather go on holiday than to the Cornish coast? I hope I leave a little bit of something with my readers when they finish that last page of my book – even if it’s an imagined ray of Cornish sunshine warming your back or the hankering for a Cornish pasty. I took great pleasure in imagining up my latest books, The Postcard and A Good Catch and spent too many hours at my desk tinkering with the stories until I feel they reflect a tiny piece of the magic that Cornwall holds for me. I hope you enjoy Cornwall as much as I do.

ON THE POLDARK TRAIL It’s an international hit and has catapulted Cornwall’s mining history into popular culture, Poldark is tantalising viewing. Go behind-the-scenes and discover the glistening blue waters, lush countryside and craggy cliffs that sashayed from the background to become the lead star of Poldark in the first two series.

Botallack to Levant Mine Location managers couldn’t resist the rich mining heritage of the stretch of west Cornwall coast linking Botallack and Levant. Cameras rolled with Levant Mine playing the role of the fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill while Owles and Crowns near Botallack starred as Wheal Leisure. 6

Truro/Charlestown Cornwall’s city of Truro is a central Poldark location; whether it’s Caroline Penvenen going there to shop or Ross to meet his banker, there’s rarely an episode without it being mentioned or visited. The city itself was Winston Graham’s inspiration when writing the novels but for the TV production filming took place in Charlestown, near St Austell, which is famed for its Grade II Listed harbour and collection of Tall Ships, while the street scenes were played out in Corsham in Wiltshire. Bodmin Moor Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross Poldark’s cottage, Nampara, were shot on Bodmin Moor along with many capturing the cast on horseback. With a rugged character and wild streak, Bodmin Moor provides the perfect backdrop to Poldark’s plot of passion and family dramatics.

Holywell Bay Holywell Bay and its iconic Gull Rock is a familiar backdrop in series two. Many of the characters are seen riding on horseback across the golden sands, most memorably the passionate gallops between Dwight and Caroline.

Perranporth Winston Graham lived in Perranporth in the original Nampara Lodge and wrote much of his literary works from a writing chalet nestled amongst the dunes overlooking the three-mile sweep of Perranporth beach. Visit today and hunt down the memorial bench and plaque in the spot of the chalet which has sadly long since burned down.

Porthgwarra With crystal clear waters and a remote beauty, the small cove of Porthgwarra at the heart of St Aubyn Estates in west Cornwall was the perfect setting for Ross’ famous skinny dipping scene in series one.

Alice in Wonderland (2010) Rame Peninsula and Charlestown Antony House on the Rame Peninsula and Charlestown harbour are home to Alice before she slips down to the animated world of the rabbit hole in this Tim Burton adaptation.

Die Another Day (2002) Eden Project and Holywell Beach In this James Bond action thriller the Eden Project was the perfect host to Pierce Brosnan as he abseiled through the centre of the Tropical Biome (aka an Icelandic diamond mine) and Holywell Beach doubled up as a North Korean beach. 10

IN THE SPOTLIGHT TATE ST IVES 2017 is the year itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all happening for Tate St Ives. Following an 18-month closure for exciting development works the doors are reopening to reveal incredible new spaces and inspirational exhibitions. Executive Director, Mark Osterfield, gives us the inside scoop on whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in store. Tate St Ives is one of four galleries in the Tate family alongside Tate Britain, Tate Modern and Tate Liverpool. What led St Ives to be chosen as a host location? St Ives, a small town on the southwest coast, might seem an unlikely place for a major art gallery. However, its artistic connections go back to Victorian times when lots of artists came to St Ives to paint. The outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 meant artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo moved down from London. They were part of the modernist movement, making art to help people look at the world in a different way.

They, and younger artists such as Terry Frost and Peter Lanyon, made St Ives internationally known as a centre of modern art. Barbara Hepworth, a sculptor, lived and worked in St Ives until her death in 1975. Her house and studio became a museum celebrating her work. In 1980 Tate was given the museum to look after. By the middle of the decade the town decided a gallery should be built to show works by artists who had lived or worked in St Ives and asked Tate to work with them. Tate St Ives opened in 1993, showing temporary exhibitions of international modern and contemporary art, including works from the Tate collection.

What is it about St Ives that makes it so attractive to artists? An extraordinary landscape and quality of light. Back in the 19th century, St Ives also offered artists cheap studio space. We still have a thriving community of artists who live and work here, as well as art schools and galleries to inspire future artists. Tate St Ives temporarily closed to visitors after the 2015 summer show. What has been going on behind the scenes during this time? We’ve been transforming the gallery to create more space to show art and new spaces for events and activities.

modernist art in St Ives from 1920 to the 1980s. The new gallery will have a temporary exhibition by an internationally important British artist. The kids are in tow, what’s at Tate St Ives for them? We love families! We know that the best visits are when families can explore, discover and learn about art in a way that suits them. The much loved I Spy Tate free family trail will get them introduced to the spaces while activities based around the art on show will unleash everyone’s creative genius. Tell us something unexpected about Tate St Ives. The gallery was built on the site of a gasworks. At the curving entrance to the gallery, one of the walls is actually from a gas tower!

To do this, we’ve had major demolition and construction works. In the existing gallery we’ve been building new spaces for learning activities. The reopening will take place in two phases – when and what can we expect? On Friday 31 March 2017 the existing building reopens with a summer season of two exhibitions: • A rtists & the Ceramics Studio, 1920 - Today: From the rise of studio pottery in the 1910s to a number of new commissions by a young generation of UK-based artists, the exhibition traces the changing shape of the ceramics studio. • J essica Warboys is a young contemporary British artist. She uses large-scale paintings, films and performance to explore memories, personal or collective, from history, myth and fiction. The gallery will also celebrate the completion of new learning spaces, with a range of events and activities for all visitors. The existing gallery will look much the same as before, with the stained glass window designed by Patrick Heron in the Heron Mall and the gallery space with the huge curved window overlooking Porthmeor Beach. In autumn 2017 we open our amazing, vast, new gallery space, topped by a roof garden, which will enable us to show twice as much art. We’re also changing how we show art. In the original building a more permanent display of art will tell the story of

To say that fresh sea air is, well, fresh is an understatement at Chapel Porth’s secluded beach. The rolling surf, the sea spray and the breeze coming off the ocean is the best natural therapy we can think of.

For a slice of together time seek out the long empty golden sands of Porthbeor, one of Cornwall’s finest hidden beaches. There are no nearby car parks and you’ll have to climb a stile, cross a field and navigate some steps to reach it but the solitude will be more than worth it.

Best For: Bounty Hunters Talland Bay, Looe Once a haunt of smugglers, the beach today reveals a different kind of bounty in a treasure trove of colourful seashells, pretty pebbles and bits of driftwood. Take a stroll and collect some souvenirs.

Visit Porthcurno beach in west Cornwall – with turquoise waters and fine golden sand you’ll kick yourself for not having done it before! Take a dip in the Atlantic. If you’re a keen beach goer but do little more than splash along the shoreline make this the year you find a love of sea swimming. Go on, get those shoulders under! See the Eden Project like you’ve never seen it before by soaring over the biomes at up to 60mph on the SkyWire. Climb Rough Tor. With a summit 400m above sea level this Bodmin Moor landmark offers some of the best views in Cornwall. Jump on a plane or ferry to the mesmerising Isles of Scilly which lie just 35 miles off the coast of Cornwall. We promise you that your first visit won’t be your last. Follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest painters of the 19th and 20th century and be inspired by St Ives’ famous light with an art class overlooking the ocean. Visit the Rame Peninsula. Often overlooked, this hidden corner in south east Cornwall is somewhat of a secret. Go where the crowds don’t go to discover miles of unspoilt coast. See the sunset from the aptly named High Cliff at Crackington Haven near Bude, the highest point on the Cornish coast. Look out for the famous ‘green flash’ that occurs seconds before the sun sets.

Nothing tastes better than when you’ve caught your own supper. Join a fishing trip from any one of Cornwall’s harbours and make the experience even more authentic by cooking your catch on a BBQ back on shore. We can almost taste it! Walk the South West Coast Path. Ok, the whole 300 mile stretch around the coast of Cornwall may be a little over ambitious (unless you’ve got abut 3 weeks going spare!) but get yourself a good map and mark off sections as you do them. Love Cornish Cream Teas? Learn how to make one from scratch by joining a ‘Cornwall in Day’ cookery masterclass with Philleigh Way Cookery School. See a performance beneath the stars at the Minack Theatre. The 2017 performance schedule is a real showstopper! Play with Cornish fairies, piskies and spirits at the unspoilt and secret St Nectan’s Glen waterfall. Race the tide back to shore by walking the iconic St Michael Mount causeway. With the sea licking at your ankles, it’s a truly Cornish experience! Have that surf lesson you’ve always promised yourself but never quite got round to. There are surf schools right along the coast so there’s no excuse. Broadcaster, traveller and adventurer “When I am far away from home, in a foreign land I often dream of England. I close my eyes and I conjure up the perfect landscape. It has green rolling hills spilling onto rugged cliffs that soar from azure blue waters. Nearby, colourful fishing boats line a picture perfect harbour while seagulls wheel above. The air is rich with salt. The sun warms my bare arms. It is Cornwall.

I have always loved Cornwall, ever since I first visited St Ives as a young boy. I have since returned many times over the years. I have explored the rich depths of its coastline by free diving, scuba and even in a diving bell. I have sailed, kayaked and rowed gigs through the Atlantic waters and I have explored the many coves and bays along its breathtaking coastline. I have performed on the world’s greatest stage at the Minack Theatre hand hewn into the cliffs and I have pruned the weeds dangling from the precipitous walls of St Michael’s Mount. I have floated high above the Eden Project biomes in a hot air balloon holding the Olympic torch and I have furry danced through Helston. I have explored tales of pirates, mermaids and shipwrecks and walked much of Cornwall’s coastal path. I have sheltered from the rain and wind of Bodmin Moor and have been wild swimming. I can remember every detail of each encounter. You see Cornwall has a timelessness. It is dramatic, ethereal, mysterious, rugged and bewitching. “One of my favourite places to visit in Cornwall is St Enodoc Church on the north coast. I catch the ferry to Rock from Padstow and walk across the dunes of Daymer Bay to this charming chapel that peeps out from the sands beneath Brea Hill. Some of the church’s architecture can be traced back to the 12th century. It’s also where Sir John Betjeman, one of my favourite poets, is buried. Betjeman was particularly fond of the church and penned ‘Sunday Afternoon Service in St. Enodoc Church’.“

MAKE A SPLASH AT JUBILEE POOL Last year Penzance welcomed the reopening of the magnificent Jubilee Pool following a £3m restoration. Now resplendent in all its former glory this art deco lido has become a must-visit for everyone from dawn dippers and action seekers to fun-filled families and those just wanting to soak up the atmosphere. Nothing quite describes the wonder that is swimming in a vast art deco lido. Like most unusual pursuits you simply have to try it. And luckily, here in Cornwall we can boast what is now considered to be the finest example of a prewar lido anywhere in the world - the magnificent Jubilee Pool in Penzance. Described as one of the most unusual and pleasingly designed lidos in the UK, the Jubilee Pool was designed in the early 1930s by Captain F Latham, the Borough Engineer. The pool was opened with great celebration in May 1935, the year of King George V’s Silver Jubilee. The Pool was built upon a traditional bathing spot near the harbour at Penzance. Cleverly designed to cope with

the ferocity of the Cornish seas, the pool is triangular in shape yet with gentle curves making it a most pleasant environment. In many respects it is the perfect modernist beach - albeit without sand, but the elegance of the lido’s streamlined curves and the wide white terraces, ideal for sunbathing, result in many visitors staying all day long and then returning again and again. Of course being seawater the water can be bracing at first, but typically it’s at least 5 degrees warmer than the sea and if you’re still a bit wary no one will mind if you wear a wetsuit. If a swim doesn’t appeal, you could happily spend a day relaxing on the terraces watching others partake in the waters. The children’s pool is a particularly popular place for toddlers to spend a splashy few hours.

A guide book from 1938 tells us that: “In many respects the design is unique architecturally, partly from a point of view of necessity in conforming with existing conditions of wave elements and rocks which controlled the outline. Streamlines have been used to the greatest advantage in meeting the direction of the storm waves, while a Cubist style has been adopted in the interior in providing diving platforms and steps... The whole pool is surrounded by high streamlined sea walls terraced up within the interior so as to give aspect and effect. They also serve to strengthen the structure.” These walls also protect

swimmers from strong, offshore winds and form terraces for spectators.

A NEW BEGINNING Twenty years later in February 2014, severe storms caused serious structural damage. The Friends persuaded local stakeholders to support the repair and restoration of this much loved building, with the overwhelming backing of the wider community. Cornwall Council and local councillors were also supportive and as a result an application for government funding via the Coastal Communities programme by Cornwall Council was successful.

Partnership’s Regional Growth Fund, Tempus Leisure, Penzance Town Council and The Friends of Jubilee Pool. In May 2016, Jubilee Pool reopened its doors having been closed to the public for two seasons.

The Coastal Communities Fund granted Cornwall Council £1.95m as a part of a repair and restoration project totalling £2.94m. Match funding was provided by Cornwall Council, Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise

The pool was a popular amenity for over 50 years. However, by 1992 it had become dilapidated to the extent that its future operation was in doubt. Fortunately a retired local architect, the late John Clarke, recognised the pool’s importance and came to the rescue. He formed The Friends of Jubilee Pool with other local supporters, and thanks to his direct input the pool was listed. In the following two years John worked voluntarily to secure essential grant funding which enabled the pool to survive.

Over 40,000 visitors flocked to the Jubilee Pool last summer, enjoying a range of activities from swimming to stand-up paddle boarding, concerts to energetic aquathlons. It’s also a perfect excuse to visit the delightful town of Penzance, gateway to the spectacular Penwith peninsula with its art galleries, great food scene and extraordinary views over magnificent Mount’s Bay. The county’s capital city lies right at its heart – just a short five miles from the surfing haven of the north coast, and with some of the best sailing in the UK practically sitting on its south coast. Getting there is easy too, with nine city centre carparks and two new Park and Ride services. There are also well connected rail and bus stations, as well as a passenger ferry service to take you in and out of the city by boat along the river. BETWEEN THE SUNSHINE! It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the sun doesn’t always shine in Cornwall, but frankly, who cares? It doesn’t seem to stop visitors to the county enjoying the beautiful surroundings, relaxed atmosphere and heritage even if it is sometimes framed by grey clouds and drizzle. So whatever the weather or the time of year, there’s no need to let rain stop play. The first piece of advice would be to get up and get out in that drizzle (or mizzle as we say in Cornwall) and head to the beach. Skip or stroll along the soft sand at somewhere like Daymer Bay near Padstow and just breathe in that glorious fresh sea air. Get one of those beach tent affairs, sit in it, unwrap a red hot pasty and chuckle to yourselves. You’ll do it anyway so we might as well give you heads up on that one. We always like it as autumn turns to winter when storm watching is a great way to see nature in all its glory. Gales whip up a giant swell, huge rollers crash on the shore and nature puts on a spectacular show. It’s best to see it all unfold from a cosy café on the coast while you snuggle up and enjoy a hot chocolate. You could also wrap up well and go as far south as you can get without getting wet, apart from the drizzle that is, and stand at Lizard Point and hold on tight. The sea here is what we call ‘quite rough’ and is totally mesmerising. You might get a little emotional being that close to something so primeval, natural and wild. We know we have and we’re not ashamed.

This might sound a bit obvious, but the best thing to do when it’s raining is to get even wetter. Cornwall is renowned for its surfing beaches and it doesn’t matter if you’re a total beginner or a pro, all you have to do is put on a wetsuit, grab a board, dive in the surf and let those rollers carry you back to shore. Be sure to hook up with an instructor to master the technique and stay safe! Ok, we’ve mentioned it may be wet outside but inside it’s great fun at Cornwall’s many indoor play areas. When the dark clouds gather let the kids run riot at Trethorne Leisure Park near Launceston where they can have loads of fun in the ball pools and on the assault course. At One2Eleven in Helston kids will have a blast on the hyperglide slide and trying to dodge the cannon shooters while at Kidzworld in St Austell there’s even an indoor beach at Smugglers Cove, climbing games and a sensory soft play area for the really tiny ones.

If the sea just looks a tad uninviting then in the safety of a leisure pool - you’ll find loads dotted around the county - you can go wet and wild on wave machines, river rapid rides and flumes. It’ll be just as much fun but without the sandy feet. How about seeing the wet stuff from a different angle? While you stay dry at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth discover all about Cornwall’s deep sea heritage. SOUTH COAST Stretching from Rame Head to the Helford River, the South Coast of Cornwall is a tranquil blend of lush green countryside and a pretty coastline, scattered with hidden bays, traditional fishing villages and exotic gardens. Crossing the border into Cornwall, you’ll find the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand as the Tamar River meets the sea. The calm waters here are perfect for sailing and windsurfing and offer some of the best dive sites in the UK. Nearby is the wide golden expanse of Whitsand Bay, ideal for surfers and day-trippers alike. The working port of Looe is just the place to buy freshly caught fish, as well as enjoy the mix of shops and eateries dotted around the town. Further along, wander the traffic-free, narrow streets of Polperro towards the small harbour to admire the fisherman’s cottages, sail lofts and shops selling local crafts and treats. Take the Bodinnick Ferry across the Fowey River to the town of Fowey with its upmarket shops, trendy cafés and wonderful harbour. Upstream, hidden in a magical woodland setting, the village of Lerryn is said to have been the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame’s book, “The Wind

in the Willows”. At the ancient town of Lostwithiel, once the capital of Cornwall, is a striking 12th Century castle built for Edward the Black Prince. The tall ships and rows of 18th Century cottages in Charlestown give a glimpse of a bygone era, while at Mevagissey, beyond St Austell and the ever-popular Eden Project, a scenic boat trip allows access to the hidden coves once used by smugglers.

Truro, at the head of the River Fal, showcases fine examples of Cornish architecture, such as the 19th Century Neo-Gothic cathedral, as well as many Victorian and Georgian buildings. Tempting boutiques, fine restaurants and fashionable bars make the city a shopper’s paradise.

Stretching along the river on the immense Fal Estuary, St Mawes is a peaceful place to visit. Hard then to imagine that Henry VIII built its castle to protect against invasions from the sea! Take to the water on board one of the many ferries that cross the estuary and keep a look out for a multitude of wildlife. The climate is so mild here that tea bushes flourish a few miles away at the Tregothnan Estate.

Home to the third largest natural deep water harbour in the world, the superb National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the well regarded creative multi-arts university, the town of Falmouth offers a delightful mix of grand hotels, modern apartments, shops and trendy eateries. SOUTH NORTH COAST

NORTH COAST Buffeted by Atlantic waves, Cornwall’s North Coast is a seventymile expanse of cliffs, bays, beaches and clusters of seaside villages and towns. A big draw for water sports enthusiasts, it’s equally appealing for all kinds of holiday. Rounding the corner from the Penwith Peninsula and heading east, the coastline is exposed to the full force of the Atlantic. In Portreath the harbour wall helps to shape a perfect surfing wave known as ‘The Vortex’. In contrast, the concealed beach at Chapel Porth, just a couple of miles further along, provides the perfect spot to relax while listening to the roar of the sea. Inland at St Agnes you’ll find quaint shops and pubs, and the town makes a good starting point for exploring parts of the coastal footpath. The three miles of golden sand, big surf and pretty sand dunes make popular Perranporth a great example of the fantastic beaches to be found on the North Coast. Walk the beach, relax on the sand or grab a drink in one of the beachside cafés. If you’re after something a little quieter Crantock beach, on the River Gannel estuary, is a lovely spot for a picnic. Newquay, perhaps one of the best-known destinations in the county and proud surf capital of Britain, is a wonderful mix of

vibrant resort and beautiful scenery. The town is brimming with shops, cafes and restaurants, and is considered to be the cultural and festival centre of Cornwall, while its beaches are some of the finest around. Head to nearby Watergate Bay, where at the Extreme Academy you can learn all manner of water sports, while the gentle waves at Mawgan Porth make it a perfect place to learn to surf. High on the cliffs, the views from the top of Bedruthan Steps are spectacular, and equally breath taking is the crescent shaped beach at Harlyn Bay. Inland on the Camel River estuary, Wadebridge provides for all your retail needs, be they picnic treats, general provisions or surf gear. Renowned for its fashionable shops and eateries, Padstow is a lovely place to spend the day. Take the ferry across to Rock and enjoy both sides of this beautiful estuary. With its charming harbour and traditional fisherman’s cottages, Boscastle’s setting is hard to beat, while at Crackington Haven the famous colourful chevron rock formations start to appear creating a small cove. BODMIN MOOR & THE TAMAR VALLEY Discover the dramatic contrast between the wild and rugged Bodmin Moor and the lush green hills of The Tamar Valley. One hundred and fifty square miles of beautiful, wind swept moorland provides the setting for excellent walks and from the top of Cornwall’s two highest peaks, Rough Tor and Brown Willy, the views are simply breath taking as you look down over a land dotted with ancient buildings, standing stones and medieval farms. The importance of the moor has earned it a number of designations including an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site status in recognition of its 4,000-year-old tin mining industry. Most of the moor has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Liskeard, a busy market town, lies at the gateway to the moor a few miles inland from the South Coast. Here 19th Century buildings give a glimpse of the town’s prosperous past, once a centre for the mining industry. The town of Bodmin is a good spot to base yourself to explore the surrounding area, and is also near the starting point of the Camel Trail cycle trail that leads all the way to Padstow. The ancient Cornish capital of Launceston on the edge of the 72

moor, with its narrow streets and 1000-year- old castle, offers a good selection of shops, a market in the town square and some delightful art galleries. The sheltered setting and gentle climate of the Tamar Valley allows for a rich and diverse vegetation and it’s easy to see why it has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lying on the banks of the slow moving Tamar River, the picturesque village of Calstock hosts a multitude of fairs, festivals and art exhibitions throughout the year and at Cothele House you can learn about the area’s historic commerce in a fascinating museum. Further north, Camelford is believed by some to be the location of the ancient court of Camelot. Here Arthurian legend begins to creep in; a stone at nearby Slaughterbridge marks the spot where King Arthur reputedly fell in his last battle. VISITCORNWALL.COM

GETTING HERE BY ROAD The M4, M5 and M6 motorways have made travel to Cornwall simple and straightforward, while within Cornwall itself, the two major holiday routes, the A30 and A38 continue to improve, with fast dual carriageways as far as Carland Cross, Mitchell, and most of the way to Penzance. Follow the M5 to Exeter, after which you will take either the A30 or A38 into Cornwall, depending on your final destination. Alternatively, if you enter Cornwall via North Devon, then there is the Atlantic Highway, the A39, which you can join at junction 27 on the M5.
