Branching off the main London to Penzance route are five fantastic little railway lines just waiting to be explored! The route from Liskeard to Looe takes you through a wooded valley and a picturesque estuary. A twentyminute train ride from St Erth to St Ives gives superb views as it snakes around golden bays. Joining the north and south of the county, the Atlantic Coast Line passes through woodland, nature reserves and china clay villages on its way to Newquay. Enjoy the peaceful scenery of the Fal Estuary on the Truro to Falmouth line. The long-awaited Drama was mainly shot in Cornwall. When the cast and crew filmed during the summers of 2014/2015 they caused quite a flurry of excitement. Aidan Turner and Eleanor Tomlinson were spotted up down the county.
Truro While Corsham in Wiltshire doubled as Truro for filming, the City itself was Winston Graham’s true inspiration for the story and was the location of choice for the world premiere of the series. Producers, writers and the headline cast joined lucky locals for an exclusive viewing of the first episode and won their first of many rave reviews.
PORTHGWARRA Once a thriving fishing cove, the beautiful Porthgwarra sits at the heart of St Aubyn Estates and boasts a peaceful existence with its days surrounded by wildflowers and birdlife. The tunnel cut through the rock makes it perfect for swimming and rock pooling while the South West Coast Path offers unsurpassed views. Stop in the Porthgwarra Cove Cafe (seasonal) or pack a traditional picnic for an 18th Century Poldark experience.
Bodmin Moor The cast and crew found themselves on Bodmin Moor for a large part of their time in Cornwall. Scenes featuring the exterior of Ross Poldark’s cottage, Nampara, were shot here along with many capturing the cast on horseback. With a rugged character and wild streak, Bodmin Moor provides the perfect backdrop to Poldark’s plot of passion and family dramatics.
BOTALLACK TO LEVANT Location managers couldn’t resist the rich mining heritage of the stretch of west Cornwall coast linking Botallack and Levant. Cameras rolled with Levant Mine playing the role of the fictional Tressiders Rolling Mill while Owles and Crowns near Botallack starred as Wheal Leisure.
Charlestown Charlestown near St Austell, famed for its collection of ships and traditional appearance, has long caught the attention of location managers and in some scenes plays the role of the principal town. As you wander along the side of the original Grade II Listed harbour complete with Tall Ships, you can almost imagine that you’ve been cast as an extra or have been transported to Graham Winston’s 18th Century setting.
PADSTOW AREA For some of the cliff scenes the filming action moved to the Padstow area. Fans of north Cornwall will recognise the spectacular views across the Camel Estuary and Tregirls beach, while the beauty of the wide sandy beach of Porthcothan is hard to miss in the scenes featuring Poldark’s fictional Nampara Cove.
St Agnes Head Another area that enjoyed a taste of Hollywood is St Agnes Head where iconic engine houses perch serenely on the cliff-tops offering a silent reminder of Cornwall’s mining heyday. A natural location choice, it doubles as Nampara Valley in the show.
Church Cove Gunwallow Church Cove Gunwallow on The Lizard relived its smuggling past when Aidan Turner and a hoard of other cast members and extras descended to film night-time ship wrecking scenes. While the events of the night highlight the nicer side of Turner’s character, the villagers don’t come off in such a good light - away from the cameras though and the scene on a normal day is much more peaceful. An attractive sandy cove overlooked by the tiny church of St Wynwallow.

Getting There The passenger ship, Scillonian III, departs from Penzance and takes 2 hours and 40 minutes to reach St Mary’s, Scilly’s main island, passing St Michael’s Mount and the famous Wolf Rock Lighthouse on its journey. Maximise your time on the islands by flying instead of catching the boat. Flights depart from Newquay and Land’s End.

Former Prime Minister Lord Harold Wilson is buried in the peaceful churchyard at Old Town on the South Coast, where you’ll also discover many lovely places to eat. The lighthouse at Peninnis Head offers stunning views of the prominent rock formations of Pulpit Rock, Tooth Rock and

EXPLORE FURTHER:
the ‘Sleeping Giant’. A slightly longer walk away, you’ll find Watermill Cove and Pelistry Beach, where at low tide you can walk across to Toll’s Island, and Porth Hellick Bay, a pretty cove with dramatic rock formations and a sheltered beach. Here a nature trail, famed for its abundance of native and migratory birds, stretches back to the tiny hamlet of Holy Vale. The Iron Age village at Halangy Down and Bronze Age tombs at Innisidgen give a fascinating insight of the islands’ ancient history.
CLOSE BY: Well worth a visit are Buzza Tower, originally a windmill but now home to a camera obscura and Museum of Curiosities, and the Old Lifeboat Station, packed with fascinating maritime history. At beautiful Porthmellon Beach you can hire kayaks and dinghies, and the 16th Century Garrison offers spectacular views across the archipelago.

Pencarrow House near Bodmin, dating back to the 18th Century, is still the home of the Molesworth-St Aubyn family who were involved in the founding of Lloyds Bank. Guided tours give access to the stately rooms and tea can be taken in the grounds.
Imposing stone towers in the rolling green countryside are silent reminders of Cornwall’s hugely important contribution to the development of world industry and commerce. CONSERVE & ENHANCE The Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, one of 46 in the UK, is unique in that it consists of 12 separate geographical areas but is one single AONB. These sections include 10 stretches of Cornish coastline as well as the Camel Estuary and Bodmin Moor. Nearly 80% of the protected land is farmed and of course people live there, work there, travel through and, in large numbers, come to visit. The purpose of the AONB designation, enshrined in national law, is to ‘conserve and enhance the landscape.

Crossing the border into Cornwall, you’ll find the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand as the Tamar River meets the sea. The calm waters here are perfect for sailing and windsurfing and offer some of the best dive sites in the UK. Nearby is the wide golden expanse of Whitsand Bay, ideal for surfers and day-trippers alike.
The working port of Looe is just the place to buy freshly caught fish, as well as enjoy the mix of shops and eateries dotted around the town. Further along, wonder the traffic-free, narrow streets of Polperro towards the small harbour to admire the fisherman’s cottages, sail lofts and shops selling local crafts and treats. Take the Bodinnick Ferry across the Fowey River to the town of Fowey with its upmarket shops, trendy cafés and wonderful harbour. Upstream, hidden in a magical woodland setting, the village of Lerryn is said to have been the inspiration for Kenneth Grahame’s book, “The Wind in the Willows”. At the ancient town of Lostwithiel, once the capital of Cornwall, is a striking 12th Century castle built for Edward the Black Prince.
Stretching along the river on the immense Fal Estuary, St Mawes is a peaceful place to visit. Hard then to imagine that Henry VIII built its castle to protect against invasions from the sea! Take to the water on board one of the many ferries that cross the estuary and keep a look out for a multitude of wildlife. The climate is so mild here that tea bushes flourish a few miles away at the Tregothnan Estate.
Truro, at the head of the River Fal, showcases fine examples of Cornish architecture, such as the 19th Century Neo-Gothic cathedral, as well as many Victorian and Georgian buildings. Tempting boutiques, fine restaurants and fashionable bars make the city a shopper’s paradise.

The tall ships and rows of 18th Century cottages in Charlestown give a glimpse of a bygone era, while at Mevagissey, beyond St Austell and the ever-popular Eden Project, a scenic boat trip allows access to the hidden coves once used by smugglers.

The laidback town of Sennen is worth a stop; it retains its old fishing port charm while embracing its status as a great surfing destination. At Porthgwarra you’ll find lofty rock stacks, steep slipways and mysterious tunnels bored into the rocks, while at Porthcurno gorgeous sandy beaches await. The small harbour and pretty narrow streets of Mousehole earned it the description of the ‘loveliest village in England’ by Dylan Thomas. Buffeted by Atlantic waves, Cornwall’s North Coast is a seventy-mile expanse of cliffs, bays, beaches and clusters of seaside villages and towns. A big draw for water sports enthusiasts, it’s equally appealing for all kinds of holiday.
Rounding the corner from the Penwith Peninsula and heading east, the coastline is exposed to the full force of the Atlantic. In Portreath the harbour wall helps to shape a perfect surfing wave known as ‘The Vortex’. In contrast, the concealed beach at Chapel Porth, just a couple of miles further along, provides the perfect spot to relax while listening to the roar of the sea. Inland at St Agnes you’ll find quaint shops and pubs, and the town makes a good starting point for exploring parts of the coastal footpath.
The three miles of golden sand, big surf and pretty sand dunes make popular Perranporth a great example of the fantastic beaches to be found on the North Coast. Walk the beach, relax on the sand or grab a drink in one of the beachside cafés. If you’re after something a little quieter Crantock beach, on the River Gannel estuary, is a lovely spot for a picnic. Newquay, perhaps one of the best-known destinations in the county and proud surf capital of Britain, is a wonderful mix of vibrant resort and beautiful scenery. The town is brimming with shops, cafes and restaurants, and is considered to be the cultural and festival centre of Cornwall, while its beaches are some of the finest around.
Head to nearby Watergate Bay, where at the Extreme Academy you can learn all manner of water sports, while the gentle waves at Mawgan Porth make it a perfect place to learn to surf. High on the cliffs, the views from the top of Bedruthan Steps are spectacular, and equally breath taking is the crescent shaped beach at Harlyn Bay. Inland on the Camel River estuary, Wadebridge provides for all your retail needs, be they picnic treats, general provisions or surf gear. Renowned for its fashionable shops and eateries, Padstow is a lovely place to spend the day. Take the ferry across to Rock and enjoy both sides of this beautiful estuary. Perfect conditions at Polzeath make it a surfer’s paradise, popular with both participants and spectators. Many of the little seaside towns along this stretch of coast are well worth visiting, such as Trebarwith Strand, formerly a port for shipping the area’s abundant slate. Tintagel, steeped in Arthurian legend, is home to Merlin’s Cave and the stunning ruins of a 13th Century castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur.

Delabole’s 600-year-old slate quarry boasts the largest man-made hole in Europe, which plunges 400 feet down into solid rock and measures a mile and a half in circumference. Messages and offerings are left on rock ledges at the sixty-foot waterfall at St Nectan’s Glen, a place of spiritual healing since pre-Christian times. Fabulous views, rolling fairways and firm greens all help to make St Enodoc near Rock one of the finest links golf courses in the UK, earning it the ranking of 55th in the world.

One hundred and fifty square miles of beautiful, wind swept moorland provides the setting for excellent walks and boundless opportunities to uncover just what makes this area such a treasure. The importance of the moor has earned it a number of designations including an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site status in recognition of its 4,000-year-old tin mining industry. Most of the moor has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The ancient Cornish capital of Launceston on the edge of the moor, with its narrow streets and 1000-year-old castle, offers a good selection of shops, a market in the town square and some delightful art galleries. Nearby, Hallworthy’s busy market is bursting with local produce and weekly livestock auctions.

to be found in the area, a 12th Century church at Temple was originally built by the Knights Templers for travellers on pilgrimage to Ireland. The town of Bodmin is a good spot to base yourself to explore the surrounding area, and is also the starting point of the Camel Trail cycle trail that leads all the way to Padstow. Five miles away, the village of Blisland has a fine Norman church, pretty stone houses and award-winning pub on the village green from where you can access the edge of the moor.
The sheltered setting and gentle climate of the Tamar Valley allows for a rich and diverse vegetation and it’s easy to see why it has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lying on the banks of the slow moving Tamar River, the picturesque village of Calstock hosts a multitude of fairs, festivals and art exhibitions throughout the year. The area’s prosperous farming heritage can still be enjoyed
through an amazing array of produce such as fresh vegetables, soft fruits and flowers that are often sold on the roadside, and at Cothele House you can learn about the area’s historic commerce in a fascinating museum. This stunning estuary is a haven for wildlife and is best appreciated from the water on a boat trip or even explored by canoe.

Liskeard, a busy market town, lies at the gateway to the moor a few miles inland from the South Coast. Here 19th Century buildings give a glimpse of the town’s prosperous past, once a centre for the mining industry. Beyond, hallmarks of human habitation in a wild land that stretch back 6,000 years include burial chambers, ancient stones and holy wells, like the fine example at the village of St Cleer. Further north, Camelford is believed by some to be the location of the ancient court of Camelot. Here Arthurian legend begins to creep in; a stone at nearby Slaughterbridge marks the spot where King Arthur reputedly fell in his last battle. From the top of Cornwall’s two highest peaks, Rough Tor and Brown Willy, the views are simply breath taking as you look down over a land dotted with ancient buildings, standing stones and medieval farms.

By road The M4, M5 and M6 motorways have made travel to Cornwall simple and straightforward, while within Cornwall itself, the two major holiday routes, the A30 and A38 continue to improve, with fast dual carriageways as far as Carland Cross, Mitchell, and most of the way to Penzance. Follow the M5 to Exeter, after which you will take either the A30 or A38 into Cornwall, depending on your final destination. Alternatively, if you enter Cornwall via North Devon, then there is the Atlantic Highway, the A39, which you can join at junction 27 on the M5. By rail Cornwall has main line stations at Saltash, St Germans, Menheniot, Liskeard, Bodmin Parkway, Lostwithiel, Par, St Austell, Truro, Redruth, Camborne, Hayle, St Erth and Penzance. There are also branch lines to Gunnislake, Looe, Newquay, Falmouth, St Ives and ‘bus branch lines’ to The Eden Project from St Austell Station and Helston from Redruth Station. The Night Riviera Sleeper is a refreshing way to travel between London Paddington and Cornwall, getting you to your destination early in the morning after you have had a relaxing night’s sleep. The Sleeper operates Sunday to Friday between London Paddington and Penzance. The Sleeper departs from London Paddington at 23:45* and arrives in Penzance at 07.53* the following morning. From Penzance the Sleeper departs at 21:45* and arrives in London Paddington at 05:23* the following morning. The Sleeper does not operate on Saturday nights. Please note: On Sundays this service departs Penzance at 21:15* and from London at 23:50*.
