MARKET TOWNS & VILLAGES

Y

ou’ll never be short of things to do in our fascinating market towns. Independent shops and galleries offer a unique shopping experience, with local crafts inspired by the surrounding landscape, while local produce can be enjoyed at many of the area’s award-winning restaurants, weekly markets and farmers’ markets. The area encompasses hundreds of settlements of varying size, from moorside hamlets to picturesque riverside villages and small market towns. Many of Yorkshire’s most loved and best kept villages are in the area, such as Thornton-le-Dale and Hutton-le-Hole. However, if you stray off the beaten track you will be equally rewarded – the variety of villages is endless and most have something distinctive to seek out. Malton & Norton Malton is one of Yorkshire’s most renowned foodie destinations built around its famous local produce, food shopping and monthly food markets. Malton is host to a weekly Saturday market and to one of the biggest livestock markets in the north of England. Monthly food and farmers’ markets are popular as is May’s massive annual ‘Food Lovers Festival’ attracting some of the biggest names in food. The neighbouring town of Norton is noted as a centre for training racehorses and riders can be seen on the gallops near the town. Malton is an excellent base from which to visit some of the county’s most popular visitor attractions. On the edge of Malton is Eden Camp, a unique museum of social life in the Second World War. To the west is Castle Howard – perhaps the most spectacular country house in the North of England, with its beautiful façades familiar to many from Brideshead Revisited. A few miles to the north, Flamingo Land Theme Park and Zoo is one of the UK’s most popular attractions.

Kirkbymoorside Known locally as ‘Kirby’, the town name literally means church-by-the-moor-side. Fine Georgian houses and welcoming hostelries edge the broad cobble-lined main street. Market traders sell a range of goods every Wednesday. Pickering Pickering is a traditional market town with a castle, ancient church frescos and local museum of rural life. The town hosts the North Yorkshire Moors Railway which operates steam trains, through the heart of the North York Moors National Park to Grosmont. There are some services which continue to the coast to Whitby. The skyline of the town is dominated by the magnificent spire of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which contains some remarkable 15th century murals. Whilst hidden above the town, the ruins of Pickering Castle harbour a rich royal history, originally built of wood by William the Conqueror to suppress rebellious northerners. Helmsley One of Yorkshire’s most popular market towns, Helmsley has a characterful market place, historic architecture, a wide range of quality independent shops and an excellent selection of award-winning accommodation, pubs, cafes and restaurants. It is these businesses that have helped Helmsley recently achieve the title of ‘Britain’s Best Market Town’. High above the town are the ruins of Helmsley Castle built in the 12th century successfully besieged by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War. The town is also the home of Helmsley Walled Garden originally built in 1758 to supply the Duncombe estate with fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. The Duncombe Park Estate is also home to the National Birds of Prey Centre.

26-mile heritage coastline reveals hidden gems at every turn, from picture-postcard fishing villages like Staithes with its artistic flair to the smugglers’ hot-spot of Robin Hood’s Bay, with its maze of cobbled alleys, to hideaway coves and soaring cliffs with breathtaking views. From minke whales to moorland birds, there’s a wealth of wildlife waiting to be discovered too. Home to England’s largest expanse of heather moorland, the North York Moors is an enchanting place any time of year but in late summer the heather flushes purple creating a truly magnificent sight. Meanwhile, the beautiful valleys have inspired monastic communities for centuries – visit the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, Byland Abbey and Mount Grace Priory to discover your own place of contemplation. Explore the area’s thriving market towns and villages, full of historic interest too, including Helmsley, with its Norman castle, delis, independent shops, galleries and boutique beds. Walkers have it made, with anything from a 1-mile easy access stroll to the 109 mile Cleveland Way National Trail – free downloadable route guides on the National Park website take you on step-by-step adventures to tumbling waterfalls, timeless stone villages, moorland crags and historic monuments.

It’s great for cycling too whether you’re a family cyclist or mountain biker. Head to Dalby Forest – England’s largest mountain bike trail centre, or follow the Moor to Sea Cycle Network for 150 miles of freedom on quiet roads, woodland tracks and bridleways. Discover the magic of the North York Moors at two fantastic National Park centres. The Moors National Park Centre set in an idyllic spot on the river Esk near Danby has adventure play areas, a mud kitchen and riverside trails to enjoy outside. Inside find interactive exhibits and a beautiful contemporary art gallery. Over at Sutton Bank National Park Centre, home to England’s finest view, kids can enjoy the natural play area while walks and bike rides set off straight from the door – there’s year-round bike hire and a mix of family cycle routes and more adventurous off-road thrills. More great journeys await on the Esk Valley Railway and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, the world’s most popular steam heritage railway line – linking moorland villages to the golden sandy beaches of the coast at Whitby. Take an inspiring visit to one of the two priories – Mount Grace, the best-preserved of the ten British ‘charterhouses’, whose Carthusian monks lived as hermits in cottage-like cells and Kirkham, the riverside ruins of an Augustinian priory.

Stately Homes North Yorkshire has a host of stately homes full of art and treasures, which provide an insight into what it would have been like to live, eat and work in such opulent surroundings.

Also visit the gardens at Castle Howard where its formal terraces with graceful statues, wide open spaces, lakeside paths and richly planted rose gardens provide the visitor with endless opportunities for gentle walks amongst a riot of colour. Close by at Whitby Harbour, a whale’s jawbone commemorates the town’s past as a whaling port. A few miles from Whitby, a number of romantic fishing villages rest off the cliff, such as Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay. For a traditional day out at the seaside, Scarborough, one of England’s oldest seaside resorts, has something for all the family or Filey with its miles of golden sand is popular with families.
