The Gift of Nature 2012

Page 1

Dear Friends,

Volunteers…serving 48 million people and 22,000 acres!

Your gift to nature continues to give back to the people of Northeast Ohio more than ever! In 2012, more than 48 million people benefitted by your contributions to Cleveland Metroparks through volunteer service, financial support or both. We are honored to share some of the Park District’s accomplishments during the past year that are a result of your support, and hope you will take time to remember not only the important role you played in Cleveland Metroparks 2012 success, but our appreciation as well.

“What is the essence of life? To serve others and to do good.” - Aristotle

Sincerely, Debra K. Berry, President Board of Park Commissioners

Whether it is assisting with a hike, serving as a receptionist, working as a golf course ranger or helping children with crafts at a special event, volunteers fulfill critical needs within Cleveland Metroparks, and provide a ‘personal touch’ to all aspects of the Park District. For more information on volunteer opportunities, please contact Heather Triplett, manager of volunteer services, at 216-635-3258 or hat@clevelandmetroparks.com.

Volunteers serve Cleveland Metroparks every day! In 2012, more than 1500 volunteers contributed approximately 59,000 hours of service to 31 different programs within Cleveland Metroparks, including several expanded citizen science programs such as wildlife surveys and forest restoration. In addition, 2,000 people participated in group projects in through their employers, church, scout group, etc.

Bringing Rocky River to You Through the enthusiasm and generosity of Rocky River Nature Center volunteers, Cleveland Metroparks created the Rocky River Nature Center Fund in 2012 to provide a more direct method for donations to be made to the nature center. This fund helps to support all aspects of Rocky River Nature Center such as facilitating student visits, expanding programming and resources for individuals with disabilities and improvements to the building and surrounding trails. One of the significant accomplishments of this fund in 2012 was supporting installation of a water line in conjunction with new exhibits. The new exhibit features large aquariums with fish and amphibians that live in Rocky River - directly outside the nature center! Through installing an additional water line, exhibit maintenance time has been streamlined for staff and volunteers in order to make sure that the exhibit is consistently at its best for visitors.

Forest Restoration and Rehabilitation The forests of Cleveland Metroparks are one of the most important natural resources in our region. In addition to providing a beautiful landscape, trees throughout the Park District improve air quality and create habitat for wildlife. Approximately 150 tree species may be found in Cleveland Metroparks. Donations to the Legacy Fund support tree planting throughout the Park District, as well as other native plants to provide food and shelter for wildlife. To ensure the future of its ecosystem, Cleveland Metroparks has been monitoring and evaluating forest communities throughout its 22,000 acres. As a result of this work, the natural resources division recently prepared a comprehensive plan to address priority areas that have been degraded over the years through many factors including storm damage, development of surrounding property, deer and invasive species such as the Emerald Ash Borer. Based on this plan, approximately 40,000 trees will be planted during the next several years with the assistance of donations to the Legacy Fund. To celebrate its 95th anniversary and begin reforestation efforts, Cleveland Metroparks planted 95 trees on Fort Hill in Rocky River Reservation last April. A team comprised of approximately 20 staff members and volunteers planted red oak, black oak and American hornbeam trees at this historic site with support from the Legacy Fund. During the next five years, leading to its 100th anniversary, Cleveland Metroparks will plant additional trees at Fort Hill and continue rehabilitating the surrounding trail network.

Exploring Nature

Straight from the Heart

Cleveland Metroparks Look About Lodge naturalist staff is creating a ‘nature play’ area for young children at the Arboretum in South Chagrin Reservation. The nature play area is designed to provide a safe environment for children to explore nature through unstructured play such as building with sticks or rocks, balancing on a log or walking through a living tunnel into a prairie. Through a partnership with Turner Construction, the newest nature play feature is a large deck constructed within the trees that provides a ‘squirrel’seye’ view of their surroundings. Turner Construction’s Leadership Turner Class of 2012 designed the tree deck and provided much of the physical labor to construct the project. In addition, Leadership Turner raised more than $12,000 for this special project and several dedicated Look About Lodge volunteers supported the project as well.

Through the generosity of Cleveland Clinic’s Western Region (Fairview, Lakewood and Lutheran Hospitals), Cleveland Metroparks received 30 Automatic Electronic Defibrillators - commonly known as AED units in 2012. This gift was made possible through proceeds from Straight From the Heart which is an annual fundraising event presented by Cleveland Clinic’s Western Region and the Community West Foundation. Through this donation, Cleveland Metroparks has placed an AED unit in each Ranger zone car to significantly increase victim response time. This gift has also increased coverage at facilities throughout the Park District. Nationally, instances of cardiac arrest commonly occur at golf courses, swimming beaches and areas with high attendance such as Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. This contribution is truly a life-saving donation for the 48 million annual visitors to the Park District’s 22,000 acres.

A Lasting Gift Cleveland Metroparks Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund of The Cleveland Foundation helps to preserve and protect Cleveland Metroparks, as well as support special initiatives. During the past year, funding from the Emerald Necklace Endowment Fund supported the following: Field trip transportation - in response to the needs of local schools, a new opportunity was created to provide reimbursement for school bus transportation for classes to attend programs at outdoor education facilities that are offered at no cost by Cleveland Metroparks. Specifically, a teacher may request up to $150 once per year for reimbursement of bus expenses which allows up to 50 students to participate in a field trip. Sustainable equipment - several pieces of equipment were purchased designed to maximize efficiency while minimizing the impact on natural resources including hand tools, a power wheel barrow and small excavator. These items will be used primarily for natural surface trail work throughout the Park District as needed. Personalized proposals for endowment gifts to support programs or locations within Cleveland Metroparks are available by contacting Karen Kannenberg at 216-635-3217 or kjk@clevelandmetroparks. All inquiries are confidential.
