Notes from the Field

Taking a Hike in Your Bloomers

4

a

It’s easy to miss spring. Amidst the hurried pace of our time, days fly by in one long, extended blur, and before we realize it, summer’s here, then fall, then, “Where in heck did all the leaves go?” Yet May is my favorite month, accentuated by the sweet smells of wet earth and fresh grass, and affirmed by a daily chorus of cardinals, chickadees and chipping sparrows, even here in our suburban homesteads. Soon spring will pass, and the air will grow silent, and yet… You and I are allotted the same 24 hours each day as every other person on the planet. Bill Gates gets no more time than you do, nor does your friend who seems involved in just everything. How each of us decides to enter the river of time is an individual decision, and how far we wade is rewarded by how much of the river we experience and come to know. If necessary, you must make appointments with yourself to experience those things that are important to you. And remember not to cancel any of those appointments; you’re important, too.

Depending on where in the Greater Cleveland area you live and post office delivery schedules, you may receive this monthly magazine in late April. So much the better, for in late April and on through early May, the forests of Cleveland Metroparks frantically send forth an amazing

array of wildflowers, and whether you are there to see them or not, they will complete their blooming cycles in only a week or so, and, except for remaining green stems and leaves, be gone for another year. By month’s end, full leaf cover unfolds, and the dappled sunlit forest floor of mid-spring with its carpet of blooming wildflowers is but a memory, with nearly fifty weeks before we’re afforded another chance to see them. You need not know their names or life histories, but to do so greatly enhances your experience afield, much as a walk through an art museum is enhanced by a good guide. Cleveland Metroparks naturalists are a great first source, of course, and this month many hikes in many places will be exploring the ephemeral beauty

Emerald Necklace, May 2012

of our spring bloomers. Friendly naturalists will share the stories and legends of these short-lived beauties as well as their names. Bring your new pocket camera along, and note that the setting that looks like a tulip on the controls lets you take photos as close as two inches or so. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources publishes a wonderful free guide to spring wildflowers, and the field guide, Wildflowers: Northeastern and North-central North America by Peterson and McKenny, is a delightful and easy-to-use handbook for any spring hike afield. Flowers are grouped by color, and the most salient features of each are noted by arrows pointing them out. I find it a great beginner’s guide, and it is readily available at Cleveland Metroparks EarthWords Nature Shops in Hinckley Boathouse, Rocky River Nature Center and North Chagrin Nature Center. So the time has truly come to take a hike in, or amidst, your bloomers. You don’t have to know a thing about wildflowers to enjoy them. Call your nearest nature center to check for up-to-date information on the best places to hike and see wildflowers. The beauties of the spring you wished for all winter are here in their full glory, and the enrichment and joy of a walk in nature are waiting for you, free, in your Cleveland Metroparks. Robert D. Hinkle, PhD Chief Emeritus, Division of Outdoor Education

Naturalist’s Almanac

May

May belongs to the birds, the wildflowers, and to you! All month long the forests of Cleveland Metroparks are carpeted with an ever‑changing array of wildflowers, while overhead new songs announce the arrival of yet another feathered visitor from the South. Some birds stay and raise their families here, while others push on into the boreal forests of Canada to breed. May affirms the promises of spring with rebirth of wildflowers, the arrival of migrating birds, and the greening of forest canopies. Be a part of the rebirth, join a naturalist‑led group or discover May on your own on the trails of Cleveland Metroparks.

First Week

Third Week

Birds

Birds

Newly hatched goslings follow their parents in fuzzy yellow armadas at Cleveland Metroparks refuges. House wrens start to breed next week. Are your wren houses ready?

Wood thrushes and veerys return to fill Cleveland Metroparks forests with their haunting flute‑like calls each evening. Northern orioles begin to look for elms to build their hanging nests.

Mammals Woodchucks seem to be everywhere along parkways and all purpose trail edges, already stuffing themselves with tender young grasses. Young woodchucks will venture forth with their mothers next month. Wildflowers May apple flowers should be blooming under their umbrella-like leaves by this weekend. Shrubs Redbud is in bloom.

Second Week Birds Hummingbirds, rose‑breasted grosbeaks, nighthawks and chimney swifts should all be arriving this week or next. The peak of warbler migration is likely to occur this week. Bird walks in the forests and fields of Cleveland Metroparks are likely to turn up more birds than you ever knew existed! Many will soon be gone as they continue migration, while others “disappear” in the newly unfolding leaves of the treetops. Shrubs Flowering dogwood is blooming. A drive down Valley Parkway or Hawthorn Parkway is a breathtaking sight in the early morning sun.

Trees Tall white flowers of Ohio buckeye stand in sharp contrast to the new green leaves in many places along the parkways. Apple trees and wild lilacs are now in bloom and mark locations of old farmsteads long abandoned in the Rocky River valley. Amphibians Green frogs call at mid‑day. Their banjo-like “gunk-gunk” calls are easy to tell from the “jug‑o‑rum” calls of the look‑alike bullfrog.

Fourth Week Birds Many birds are in courtship and some have begun nest building and incubating eggs. Get up early this weekend and listen to the early morning chorus in Cleveland Metroparks forests. Bluebird houses are sometimes appropriated by tree swallows, house wrens or chickadees. Though they’re not bluebirds, each species is a beautiful addition to the world. Wildflowers Daisy fleabane, first of the summer daisies, may begin to open its white blossoms this week. It was rumored to be used as an insect repellent when crushed or burned.

EarthWords supports local vendors. Meet Karen Nolan, the “Karen” of “Cookies by Karen.” Karen has loved baking since childhood, and her dad was her best customer! When her father passed away in 2007, Karen turned to baking as a way to cope. Her company slogan, “Cookies by Karen…a little bite of heaven” is Karen’s way to honor her dad’s memory. During her first holiday season, from her Berea kitchen, she produced 8,000 cookies. In 2011, from Thanksgiving to Christmas, that amount was up to a cookie-licious 18,000! Affectionately known as the Cookie Lady, Karen provides EarthWords with her quartet of flavored cookies: Oatmeal Cinnamon Chocolate, M&M, Chocolate Chip and Double Peanut Butter Chip. You will be delighted with these tasty homemade treats that are available in our shops all year long for $1.50 for a bag of four.

Lessons Learned from Beavers Very few things are as delightful as seeing a beaver in nature. A few years ago, I led a nature walk around a pond. Suddenly, the beaver was announcing others of our impending arrival by slapping its tail on the water. My group and I stood there in awe, as we watched the beaver stop for a moment to groom itself and then swim away. The beaver sighting caused our gregarious group to go silent, as we wanted the moment to last for a while. It was then that I realized the beaver’s ability to inspire wanting to learn more. After viewing one of our beaver lodges (Rocky River Nature Center has four beaver lodges within walking distance!), the following are lessons I learned from beavers. • Timing is of the essence. When can I see the beavers? I see the lodge, but no beavers. They are crepuscular, meaning that beavers are most active at dawn and dusk. Occasionally, I see a beaver straying from its crepuscular schedule, however for the most part, they stick to it. • Home is where you make it. Many people think that the lodge is a dam; however that is not the case. What is the difference between a dam and a lodge? Beavers build a dam to stop running water, whereas they build a lodge out of branches and small tree trunks for living space. Inside the lodge is one room. Beavers are not tied to their lodge. When food runs out within six hundred feet, they abandon the lodge to make a new home. • Smile. Why do beavers have orange teeth? Beavers have orange enamel, so their front teeth are orange. Actually, all rodents have orange teeth; so that means squirrels and woodchucks have them too! • Embrace your own uniqueness. Beavers have amazing adaptations including natural eye goggles: a nictitating membrane that keeps water out of the eyes. They have a natural ear-plug, which is a flap that they can close in their ear to keep out water. In addition, beavers have a natural nose clip, which is a valve that closes when a beaver goes underwater. Such unique features aid the beaver in its travels in and around water. • Eat locally. What do beavers eat? Beavers are herbivorous, meaning they are vegetarians. They will eat the inner layer of a tree bark called the cambium layer and bark of twigs. Around Rocky River Nature Center, visitors notice the chewed-off trees that look like pencils sticking out of the ground. When their food source is depleted, they will move to areas that are more plentiful in food. • Make a difference. In North America, beavers are a keystone species, changing their environment, and making homes for other animals. While creating ponds, they make habitats for fish, muskrats, birds and many other animals. Min Keung, naturalist Rocky River Nature Center msk@clevelandmetroaprks.com

Join us on Saturday, May 12 at Rocky River Nature Center for Beaver Day, where naturalists can show you the beaver lodges that inspired these life lessons.

No other zoo in Ohio has an event like this! Wild Ride is set for Saturday, May 12, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. after the Zoo closes to regular visitors, so bikes can have the paths around the park all to themselves. The pathways will be marked to keep traffic flowing and Wild Ride maps will point out areas of the Zoo intended for beginning, intermediate and experienced riders.

Cyclists will have the chance to see the outdoor animals on exhibit and check out exhibitor booths set up on the Welcome Plaza and listen in on Meet-the-Keeper talks.
