Ceremony Details Baccalaureate Psalm 33: 1–5, 20–22 Right Reverend J. Scott Barker, Bishop of Nebraska It is customary for men to remove their caps during prayers. Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous; it is good for the just to sing praises. 2 Praise the Lord with the harp; play to him upon the psaltery and lyre. 3 Sing for him a new song; sound a fanfare with all your skill upon the trumpet. 4 For the word of the Lord is right, and all his works are sure. 5 He loves righteousness and justice; the loving-kindness of the Lord fills the whole earth. 1

Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. 21 Indeed, our heart rejoices in him, for in his holy Name we put our trust. 22 Let your loving-kindness, O Lord, be upon us, as we have put our trust in you. 20

Traditions of Clarkson College Academic Attire The history of academic attire (regalia) originated at the French and English universities during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The gowns and hoods served two functions of nearly equal importance: to indicate the academic rank of the wearer and to keep the scholar warm in the drafty stone halls of academia. In the United States, there is a universal code of color and style indicating the academic degree, the field of study and the institution that granted the degree. The associate and bachelor gowns are black and untrimmed. The master gown is similar but with pointed sleeves. The doctoral gown is more elaborate with the velvet front facing and crossbars on the sleeves. Hoods are worn to signify advanced degrees with velvet edging representing the field of study and satin stripes in colors specific to the college. Mortar board caps with tassels representing the field of study complete the academic attire. The tassel is worn on the right until the degree is conferred, when it is moved to the left. The colors used for tassels and the hood to represent the field of study include apricot for nursing, golden yellow for science, white for arts and humanities, drab for business, purple for law, green for medicine, light blue for education, citron for social work and scarlet for theology.

History of the Maltese Cross The Maltese Cross is a symbol of protection and a badge of honor. Its story originated with the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, a charitable organization that existed during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, who became known as the Knights of Hospitallers because of their charity toward the sick and poor in setting up hospices and hospitals. The eight points of the Cross represent the Beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount. These Knights of centuries past were united by a pledge of compassion and courage as are Clarkson College graduates who dedicate their lives towards helping others.

Degrees with Academic Honors & Distinction Academic honors are conferred to undergraduate candidates who, upon graduation, distinguish themselves by maintaining a high cumulative grade point average. To qualify, a student must have completed the minimum required residency hours at Clarkson College. Honors are distinguished by summa cum laude (3.85 and above), magna cum laude (3.75 through 3.84), cum laude (3.65 through 3.74) and with distinction (3.50 through 3.64). Academic honor recipients receive a gold honor cord to wear during the commencement ceremony.

Graduates with Honor Cords & Stoles Designated honor cords and stoles are given to graduates who are military veterans, active service members or involved in Clarkson College student organizations and honor societies to wear during the commencement ceremony.
