Editorial

I

N the last edition we discussed how marriages are wrecked online. This edition is themed as ‘Relationship Special’ and focusses on the rising culture of dating in Hyderabad. It also dwells into various other aspects of relationship. Dating which has not only dealt a severe blow to the age old institution of arranged marriage but has surfaced with many ramifications. Today dating is not merely restricted to getting married. There are some involved in a no commitment prolonged affair, to those more intense ones engaged in live-in relationships, while there are other desperate souls on the look out for a sexual one night stand, to those ready to settle for a lustful fling over a drink at a night club, the dating duos have set Hyderabad on fire with their bold escapades. We bring you an analysis on the issue and attempt to explore its fall out on the tradition of arranged marriage. And as truly observed in the story while dating has emerged as a preferred option amongst the city youth. Eventually marriages are made in heaven. Dating or arranged marriage, the paths may vary, but ultimately they both lead to the attainment of true love. The other related stories on dating and relationship lend you a soft cushion to stand out in the crowd when you are in a pensive mood. The underlying concern while planning the theme of ‘Relationship’ has been that today the mainstay of our success in life be it as a child in the family or as a grown up adult in this cut throat world revolves around the relationship that we share with our friends, neighbours and professional acquaintances. And above all the bonding that we share with our better half motivates us to push ourselves a little harder to attain our goal and achieve success. This issue also focuses on summer fashion and brings you a panoramic view of the fashion splurge that hit the city this May. There is an interesting dose of movie masala for the film buffs. Jacqueline Fernandez’s interview who has stepped into Mallika Sherawat’s shoes and exposes like her in the ‘Murder’ sequel will interest the film goers. And among other things an exclusive report on the scintillating Epicurus Hospitality Awards that became the talk of the town among the hoteliers. Moreover, we co-hosted the evening in the role of magazine partner for the event. There is also a beautiful story on the forgotten Horsley Hills to give you some respite from the soaring levels of mercury this summer. All in all the month was an eventful one for the city and our magazine too. Please do send in your feed back on this edition of the magazine.

ATING is definitely the hip new way to fall in love all over the world and dating services are fast picking up globally. Hyderabad too is under the grip of a dating fever. Youngsters around are keen to date while they fall in love to look for their soul mates. Having dealt a severe blow to the age old tradition of arranged marriage, the smitten ones are all out to explore each other’s partner before deciding to formally solemnise their union. Romance is in the air. Weary of the soaring levels of mercury, the love-struck, bewitched in mutual admiration can be seen hand in hand, painting the city topography. Shameerpet Deer Park, Shameerpet lake, Krishnakanth park at Yosufguda, Taj Banjara open lake side sitting, and Secret lake (Durgamchervu) are some of the discreet, adoring haunts for them. On the other hand park down Masab tank, Chacha Nehru Park, Sanjeeviah Park, Indira Park, Tank Bund, Necklace road, Safilguda lake besides a host of malls, theatres, restaurants, the night pubs and clubs are the busier hangouts being flocked and fluttered by these passionate love birds. While getting into the act of looking for a suitable match although arranged marriage has been the prevalent method of getting married since time immemorial. And our society frowns upon free mixing and dating. But now arranged marriages are passé and dating is in vogue in the metropolises of India. And why should our own Hyderabad be left behind ? The City of Charminar and Pearls known for its bustling bazaars and the rich, traditional Nizam Culture has decided to lay curtains to its age old Andaz of Parda and Lihaz. The western bravado of initiating casual relationships and their fondness for nurturing infinite intimacy between the duo of opposite sexes has hurled its projectile into the bastion of Hyderabadi conservatism. Aptly have the youngsters blown the siren of change in line with the rapidly transforming social dynamics. “For one, they have seen their older sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles and their own parents marriages and have come to one valid conclusion – compatibility through an arMETRO

Looking for an ideal mate, dating them for a while, falling in love and then getting married is a better option. People nowadays are looking for someone who is empathetic to others and along with whom they could strike a natural tuning of hearts,” reasons out Shivaranjani Gudipati, director of Centre for Social Studies. happening in other parts of the world within no time. This jet age has shortened distances for someone to travel from one place to another in a mater of few hours. Moving out to a new place to study or in pursuit of work is not a big deal these days. Teenagers first fly to overseas to pursue their professional aspirations rather than staying back here to pursue a career as a medico or an engineer. And when you are traveling to so many places you end up spending part of your lives there. Gradually their unconscious adoption to the new taste leads them to start imbibing the cultural values of that place. One does not realise when his or her taste buds change from Idly Sambar to Pizza. In today’s scenario convenience tends to replace the importance given to culture and one chooses to date someone who best fits that situation. The bottom line is that the cultural and the linguistic borders are getting blurred. With increasing ability to travel, relocate, and communicate with the foreign world, Hyderabadi boys and girls have seen the birth of this new option of dating for finding the right partner, and an end to one-size-fits-all rules as in arranged marriages. Manisha (37), a soft skills trainer, describes current mating trends as a transitioning phase. She says, “Now it’s very hard to stereotype. Depending on their locale, education level, and peer community, families may eschew traditional methods in favor of a more Western approach. For some, dating is becoming an acceptable option. A desirable woman may have her own career, or excel at the home arts. Today’s Telugu culture lads and lasses, familiar with diverse urban areas are becoming amenable to the non-traditional practice of dating.” Manisha has been dating Santosh, a manager with Standard Chartered Bank for the last two years and they both plan to get married soon. Santosh quips, “As for me, if I had not loved Manisha, I would not have decided to get married to her. No matter METRO

how so ever my people might have pressurised me to get married to someone that we would have arrived at through the formal process of arranged match making. I would rather date, love and marry a babe from a bad family, than marry some total stranger because she fits the bill.” He quips further, “That is condemning yourself to a life without love and that kinda life is not worth living. Yeahe… Atleast I am not cut out for it, certainly not!” The internet has contributed in a big way in the rise of relationships through online liaison and dating. Websites have mushroomed having replaced the traditional matchmaker in Indian arranged marriages. Websites such as shadi.com and bharat matrimony offer innovative services, free personality profile and other such encouraging incentives to meet your match online. They boast of many millions of clients and are a big hit with young people who want to influence how their marriage partners are chosen. Besides other forms of electronic communication such as e-mail and social networking sites have further facilitated this dating culture that is starting to have a significant ef-

There is an indirect peer pressure one is subjected to get married to a particular person in such marriages. A hundred years ago, the concept of dating didn’t exist. Only a moron would refuse assistance from family. Generally parents looked for someone from a similar background, and someone who was ‘suited’ in looks to their son or daughter. For those Virgo’s born between August 22 and September 19, Venus will be square your Sun during the last three weeks. This does increase the need for love and affection which should go well but there may be a little friction if you don’t get so much back in return.

Deepika describes that “in our case we had dates involving our family members too from both sides towards the end of our courtship. It eventually turned out to love cum arranged with the mutual consensus of the two families.” “It’s like once you’re married to your husband, you’re married to his family,” Malini, mother of Deepika and a school principal adds.

The solar eclipse on June 1 is trine Libra. This eclipse should bring harmonious relationships for all because of an inner feeling of calm and balance. Plans work out well, goals seem attainable Libra (9/23 – 10/22) : without too much effort. Other people do not stand in your way, and you can expect favours and at least little resistance from others, especially people in power. This is a real good month for Libra’s and the first two weeks look especially nice with Mercury trine your sign. This is most favourable as your thoughts are in harmony with your intentions. Because you express yourself so clearly and smoothly, this is the ideal time to negotiate a better deal in any area of life, in business or at work, or in personal relationships.

In more conservative families, the girls and boys accept their parents’ choice and they do not get much of an opportunity to get to know their future partner – but this is usually not out of coercion, but because they trust their parents’ judgment and or are too shy to go out on their own unless they are married. Earlier, the chances of boys and girls from the same community getting along well were very high. Today, girls and boys have developed a strong identity of their own, an identity very distinct from their parents and their community stereotypes, and therefore they need a partner who understands this. And it doesn’t matter which community he or she belongs to. Therefore an arranged match, where families try to ensure that the families of the couple also match, becomes allimportant. Unfortunately it can become far too important…that is why a lot of youngsters today are seeking their own partners, by dating.

All Scorpio’s can hope for some good news during the last two weeks with Mercury trine your sign. This is most favourable as your thoughts are in harmony with your intentions. These thoughts Scorpio (10/23 – 11/21) and ideas flow easily into words to make conversations pleasant and fruitful. For Scorpio’s born between November 5 – 21, Mars will be opposite your Sun during the first three weeks of June. This challenging aspect from Mars may present a challenge you have to overcome in order to achieve a certain goal or simply to be yourself. The energy of Mars has been building up inside and you have a great need to act, to make something happen. Anger and frustration are likely as other people stand in your way or directly oppose your will. The solar eclipse on June 1 is opposite Sagittarius, so it could be a difficult time because your ego and your will may get in the way of achieving what you want. You may feel like you are banging your Sagittarius (11/22 – 12/21): head against a brick wall because other people just don’t make things easy for you. This is a time to step back from the situation which is causing difficulty and work out why you are getting these reactions from people. This is a challenging month for Sagittarius, especially during the first two weeks with mercury also opposite your sign. This brings conflict and tension into this busy time. Your will and ego are working at cross purposed to your rational think-

ing and how you express yourself, so it’s easy to put other people off during this time. Important decision should be avoided during this period. During the first two weeks Mercury opposite Capricorn brings conflict and tension for a few days during this busy time. Your will and ego are working at cross roads to your rational thinking and how Capricorn (12/22 – 1/19): you express yourself, so it’s easy to put other people off during this time. But it is you who has to think of others and seek a compromise, at least to settle things down before you push your agenda. For Capricorn’s born between January 5 – 21, Mars is trine your Sun during the first three weeks. This positive aspect from Mars gives an increase in energy levels, self confidence and sexual desire that is well balanced and not aggressive or threatening to other people. This is a most favourable time to achieve your desires and to reach your goals. The solar eclipse on June 1 is trine Aquarius. This eclipse should bring harmonious relationships for the full month because of an inner feeling of calm and balance. Plans work out well, goals seem attainaAquarius (1/20 – 2/18): ble without too much effort. Other people do not stand in your way, and you can expect favours and at least little resistance from others, especially men and people with power. This is an ideal time to enjoy life and relax, a holiday should work out well, but this good energy should be put to furthering personal goals. This is a good month for most Aquarius, especially during the first two weeks with Mercury trine your sign. The solar eclipse on June 1 is square Pisces which may represent a crisis in confidence during June because of challenges from events or from other people, most often from men or bosses, teachers etc. They Pisces (2/19 – 3/20) : are testing you and your goals, forcing you to justify your very identity and what you are doing. Your ego is on the line, coming under pressure from others through arguments or challenges to your authority. This is not a favourable time for getting your way, certainly not if you don’t want to upset others and cause stress to yourself and add extra tension to important relationships. This could be a tougher month for most Pisceans, especially during the first two weeks when Mercury is square your sign. This increases mental activity and communication like the other Mercury to Sun transits, but it does add friction and tension in these areas.

Parents or relatives could begin the hunt by putting the word out to their circle of friends (within the caste) that they are on the look out for. A young man’s level of education and financial status gives him value while a woman’s beauty (notably her skin tone) and intact virginity are of primary importance. Although some couples get time to know each other in arranged marriages, others don’t. But more often than not, the chemistry exists. That is the important point. Doesn’t something similar happen in a love match too where the couple has undergone through a phase of dating? Two people instantly hit it off and the chemistry between them encourages them to meet again. True, they might not have marriage on their minds. But they can fall deeper in love, and that is because the chemistry exists in the first place. In an arranged match, the fact that background checks have been done by families protects the couple from the insecurity of being duped. The duping can still happen, but it can happen in a love match too.

Asking someone out is always the hardest. Here are some tips from Relationship Times to come across your date .

The first step to getting a date :

EASY DOES IT:

Make a casual acquaintance first. Get to know the person a bit before you ask them out. They will be more comfortable and you may save yourself time and money.

HI AGAIN: Find a way to see the person again, without being too forward. If they seem interested or happy to see you again, move on to the next

step. If you’re not sure but are ready to find out, go for it!

TAKE THE PLUNGE:

Ask them out on a casual date such as coffee or lunch. Have a place, day and time in mind before you ask them. This way you are prepared and don’t have to stumble when they say yes. Remember to be flexible if the day, time or place is not convenient for them.

IF THEY SAY NO: Be polite.

to play a dating game of sorts. They may have a rule to never say yes the first time they are asked. If you’re getting all the right signals but they say no to your first offer, try them again at a later time.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT LOVE IS? Being possibly the most trivial question of all times, this is one

hard question to ask.Relationship Times attempts to explore the meaning of love for all our esteemed readers.May the flame of love kindle your heart to spread its warmth all around.

L

OVE is not a bond, or a relationship, but more of a heart to heart conversation. When the conversation grows, the bond and relationship forms. Therefore, love creates the bond and relationship. Still, that leaves us with the main question, what is love? Love is no ordinary thing. It is not voluntary, but when it begins, you will know. There are three types of love. Infatuation, love of family, friends and well wishers, and love of your spouse. Infatuation, most commonly known as “Puppy Love”, is basically love at first sight. Infatuation can be the beginning of a future spouse love. Though most often infatuation doesn’t amount to much. Love of family, friends and well wishers is loving your mother and father, any siblings you may have, friends and well wishers. You want to protect them, watch over them, and fill their lives with an unbounding joy. The parents have an innermost feeling for their children, which they express everyday. Love of your spouse means loving someone you are married to. Whether husband or wife, you support your spouse with a deep modesty, and you treat them with great respect. Okay, so I told you the three types of love. But I still haven’t told you what love is. I told you a definition, a heart to heart conversation, but does that tell you much? No. So, I will put it straight. Love means to care, to protect, to watch over, to pray for, and to make sure the loved person is happy. But to tell you the truth, those are all parts of love. Not love itself. So, I will tell you what I think of love. Love has a meaning, but we will never know. Many philosophers have tried, but all their attempts have failed. Every single one of them! ORSLEY hills is the only coolest place in the southern and western parts of Andhra Pradesh. Travel to Horsley Hills, where divine fragrance of flowers flanking the roads will enthrall you to the core of your heart. Hills enveloped in green forests with exotic variety of flora, make a great resort for the people engaged in chaotic city life. The lofty peaks conversing with the blue skies would certainly tempt you with its beguiling beauty. The place got its name from W.D. Horsley, who was the collector of Cuddapah district and an admirer of the hamlet’s beauty. Most of the Indian hill stations were explored and developed by the British, so that they could use them as their summer retreats. The picturesque view of such places is an all time favourite for travellers as they provide a relaxing and salubrious retreat from the heat and dust of the plains

Large number of trees have been planted along the short stretch of the ghat road, others have grown naturally. One can see Jacaranda, Gulmohar , Allamanda, and Eucalyptus trees. There is also some sandalwood in the area, but like elsewhere, much of it has fallen to the axes and machetes of smugglers. The oldest of them all (150 years) in the hills is a eucalyptus named Kalyani. The hills are home to the Chenchu tribes who keep the Pungannur cows renowned for its high milk producing capacity. Nearby in the valley, Rishi Valley School is a popular attraction which is one amongst the well known schools of India. Mallamma Temple is another religious place tucked in the lap of lush greenery, adding a spiritual aura to this beautiful place. alter Breuning the world’s oldest man and second-oldest person, has died at the age of 114. He died of natural causes in a Montana hospital, said a spokeswoman for the Rainbow retirement home where he lived. Breuning was admitted to hospital at the beginning of April with an undisclosed illness. Breuning was 26 days younger than Besse Cooper of Georgia, whom the Gerontology Research Group in Los Angeles lists as the world’s oldest person. In an interview last autumn, Breuning attributed his longevity to eating just two meals a day, working as long as he could and always embracing change, especially death. ‘We’re all going to die. Some people are scared of dying. Never be afraid to die. Because you’re born to die,’ he said.

rince William married Kate Middleton on 29 April last. The Royal Wedding was held at Westminster Abbey in London. He is second in line to the British throne, following his father Charles, Prince of Wales. Prince William is the first son of Charles and the late Princess Diana, and the grandson of the current Queen Elizabeth II. Prince William attended Wetherby and Ludgrove schools, followed by Eton College and then graduated from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland in 2005. Prince William began dating Kate Middleton in 2003 while both were studying art history at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Kate moved to London after graduation, and in 2006 began working as an accessory buyer for the fashion chain Jigsaw. They broke up briefly in 2007, but reunited the same year. On 16th November 2010, Buckingham Palace announced that the couple were engaged to be married. Queen Elizabeth announced before the wedding that she had bestowed the title of Duke of Cambridge on William, and had also given William and Kate the Scottish titles of Earl and Countess of Strathearn -- possibly a nod to their meeting at St. Andrews. Kate’s parents are the founders of Party Pieces, a mail-order company that specialises in providing products for children’s parties and delivering them to customers within a few days.

AGE MATTERS BETWEEN LEGS: AMAR ‘BIPASHA’ Five year old sordid Amar Singh tapes are back to haunt Bipasha Basu. The CDs, which allegedly contain conversations between Singh and several Bollywood personalities, were received by several media houses and made quite a stir. The apex court has now lifted a gag order on contents of the recorded CD. Bipasha took strong exception to the tapes and commented, “I am totally shocked at the slanderous charges. It was nothing short of outrageous that the alleged conversation has been attributed to me. I had never had a telephonic conversation with Mr. Amar Singh and the report is totally malicious.” “Please request you all to go and hear the conversation 1st and then if you still think its me, I openly challenge anyone to prove it is me,” she tweeted. The conversation between the politician and the actress is clearly explicit with Amar Singh mentioning that ‘age matters between the legs’ in reply to Bipasha’s comment on his age.

EXCERPTS OF THE CONVERSATION: Amar: Hello.

IS VIDYA BALAN’S NEXT A SOFT PORN?

In a bid to clear Vidya Balan’s doubts about his film, ‘Dirty Picture’, to be released in November this year the director wants actress to check DVDs that have “strong, sexual” female characters. Director Milan Luthria has given his Dirty Picture lead actress Vidya Balan DVDs of English films Burlesque and Chicago to watch after she voiced apprehensions that the film would end up being soft porn. Milan says, “Vidya wanted to have an idea about what was in my head and about the character she plays. So as a reference point, I asked her to watch Burlesque and Chicago for rhythmic energy, lighting, photo, costumes, etc. After watching Burlesque, Vidya’s respect for me shot up a few notches further, “ he laughs. Most people perceive DP to be a very hard-hitting south Indian masala soft porn film. “That’s why it’s important to see films like Burlesque to show you the potential for this art form whether it is about a stripper, dancer or item girl. What her character does, is not cheap. I wanted to show her that I haven’t taken up a career in soft porn, “ Milan jokes.

NANA PATEKAR DIDN’T LIKE KATRINA DOING ‘SHEILA KI JAWANI’: Katrina Kaif may have become a rage with her saucy song ‘Sheila ki jawani’, but actor Nana Patekar who has worked with her in the past says he was not so impressed with the hit item number from ‘Tees Maar Khan’. “I have seen Katrina in a different way. I didn’t like to see her doing ‘Sheila ki jawani’, “ Nana told. Nana and Katrina shared screen space in ‘Welcome’ and ‘Raajneeti’. Though Nana has no reservation for item numbers and featured in one himself – ‘Hoth rasiley’ in Welcome - he feels such songs should be situational. “I can’t use gimmick and item songs in my films for public attraction. If it’s used, it should be like ‘Seekh le’ of ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’, “ he added. METRO
