The summers can get hot, but evenings are usually pleasant thanks to the cool sea breeze. The city does not experience harsh winters and it becomes moderately cool towards the end of the year. The monsoons are from June to September after which the weather becomes very pleasant and enjoyable. yderabad is one of the best places for people visiting the city to shop. For centuries it has been a major shopping center due to the presence of ports in close proximity and a huge merchant community. Shopping in Hyderabad’s various bazaars and outlets allows visitors valuable insight into the local culture, as well as the opportunity to hunt for unique gifts and beautiful souvenirs. Today the city offers almost everything both from traditional to modern stuffs found in big malls. The teeming bazaars of the old city, in the midst of which stands the 400-year-old Charminar as well as the modern shopping complexes and ultra-modern malls in the newer areas of the city add to the charm of Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Shop Guide

The main commercial areas are open from Monday to Saturday except in the Charminar area, where some shops remain closed on Fridays. Street-side bazaars remain open on Sundays too. The Abids Road becomes a paradise of book lovers on Sundays. The lucky shopper may find a rare old book or a collector’s issue of a magazine selling on the street at a throwaway price. Bargaining is a must on the street - a safe margin to ask for is 10 to 15 percent off the stated price. Commerce in Hyderabad begins around 10:30 am. You must check each item before you buy, for it is difficult to return or exchange merchandise except in the large stores. In any case care should be taken to get the receipt of items bought.

As opposed to the traditional delicacies of Andhra which are characterised by a liberal use of spices, the Hyderabadi cuisine is more hot and spicy. First developed in the kitchens of the Nizams, the cuisine is largely inspired by the Mughlai cuisine. A fine blend of herbs, spices, fresh fruits and condiments give the mouthwatering dishes a very distinguishable taste. A result of the amalgamation of Muslim techniques and meats with the vibrant spices and ingredients of the Hindus, its tastes range from sour and the sweet, the hot and the salty and studded with dry fruits and nuts. Hyderabadi cuisine is famous for its non vegetarian preparations and its most famous dish is the biryani - prepared with rice and meat. Other popular nonvegetarian dishes are ‘Kababs’, which are meat pieces or minced meat cooked in many different styles such as ‘Boti Jhammi’, ‘Kalmi’, ‘Shikampur’, ‘Sheek’, ‘Laganke-Kababs’, ‘Dum-ke-kababs. ‘Kormas’ is yet another preparation in which meat or vegetables are cooked in rich creamy gravy. 64 years after: India shining or burning? India celebrates it’s 65th year of Independence on 15th August 2011, but have we achieved complete independence ? Jydip Mukherji looks at what Independence day means to you & me. Light of Freedom dawns on India: 15th August, 1947

Red Fort at Delhi. Every patriotic soul watched with excitement and paid tribute to the martyrs.

On the eve of India’s independence, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru famous speech “Tryst with Destiny” symbolising hope and triumph, marked the beginning of a free India. India got its independence finally on 15th August 1947 after a long drawn out struggle where thousands laid down their lives to liberate India from the clutches of British rule. It was this day when India’s tricolor flag was unfolded by Pandit Nehru on the ramparts of the

64 years after: 15th August, 2011 Independence Day is a national holiday in India. The arrangement begins a month before the D-day and the roads are embellished with ribbons and Indian flags. Flag-hoisting ceremonies are executed across India by state governments. However, the chief event is conducted in New Delhi, the national capital where the Prime Minister unfurls the tricolor at the ramparts of Red Fort marked by a salutation of 21 guns, and addresses the nation. The Prime Minister’s speech holds significance as it pays tribute to the great souls who sacrificed their lives for nation’s independence and reveals the achievements of the nation during the past year beside discussing significant issues and proposing steps for further growth.

Significance of Independence then Independence Day means much metro

CITY TIMES | August 2011 | 18

more than merely celebrating the anniversary of India’s free statehood. On this day India attained a major part of Asian subcontinent’s 562 extensively spread territories besides British owned states. The day symbolises the victory of Indian patriotism from the repression of the British colonialism. Men and women from all over India joined hands to fight for India’s freedom. Many were acclaimed while others contribution went unnoticed. However, praise wasn’t what they desired for. It was the dream of free India which motivated them to walk the path of struggle unselfishly. Neither did they battle for their region nor for their natives, but for an integrated India. It is a day to pay tribute to our saviors because of whom we are breathing in free India.

What does it mean to you today? This year India is celebrating it’s 65th year of independence. Find it hard to believe? The one’s sitting high up there in the position of governance may be the only one’s who find that easy to believe..as they have been busy all these years in abusing their power and amassing wealth in the name of taxes and kickbacks. But what does this Independence Day mean to the common man? To me and you? The British and other nations that ruled our country did their best to loot our natural resources and export them to other parts of the world for their own economical growth and power. The British Raj was also responsible for levying heavy taxes on the poor farmers so that the land could never be their own and they would forever

remain indebted to the landowners. 15th August 1947, was “apparently” a proud moment for Indians for we were at last free from the clutches of a draconian foreign rule and the land now truly belonged to US! We keep hearing of the sacrifices and the amount of bloodshed that was shed in getting us this very “valuable” Independence and freedom for our country. But, does all of that really have any significance today? Do we truly value that sacrifice or the lives that were lost, in the name of our country? What does Independence Day really mean to you? For most people today, it’s just like any other day that is enjoyed being a public holiday. Some people feel patriotic just because they go to the flag hoisting ceremony in the morning and sing the national anthem...Just a moment of patriotism, after which it is all forgotten. A few guilty ones may even buy the cheap flags from the roadside beggars and flash them in their cars or homes or put it on their dresses to show their “so called “ patriotic feelings. But, is that really being patriotic? The politicians are busy ruling the people (or should I say imposing rules) that nobody is happy with. Inflation keeps the common man on the run to make more and more money that is never enough to feed the hungry mouths in any household. The prices of all essential commodities today are atrociously high..that includes

the common man’s food like dal, rice, sugar and vegetables. With the high rate of poor in our country. One wonders how they are surviving?

Aspi r a ti o n s belied! Mission unaccomplished The politicians of today have replaced the Britishers and continue to loot the country and the poor man by levying heavy taxes, having rampant corruption in bureaucratic offices, and being involved in scams of all kinds. The common man bears the brunt of all that goes on in the parliament house. I wonder if Independence Day has any real significance for these politicians? The farmers even today are committing suicide. Surplus grain is found rotting in the government sponsored go-downs in every monsoon and tons of food gets wasted as millions starve in our country...but their prices never come down. What does this country really mean to the common man? to you and me? Are we truly proud of our heritage and inheritance? Do we really behave like “sisters and brothers” in the hour of need or are we just pawns in the hands of the clashing political parties who rule and divide us in the name of religion, caste creed, color, regions and languages etc..

Wake up before it’s too late To me Independence Day reminds me of the fact that our country is in our hands now and it is up to us to save it from being lost or looted from the hands of foreigners or our own people. We have had enough of bloodshed in the name of Independence and yet we continue to fight for this same freedom with our neighbors like Pakistan, Srilanka, China, not to mention the inner turmoil that goes on in several states. We need to free ourselves from the chains that bind us...these are the chains of caste, creed, religion, region, languages and states. We need to unite and become ‘ONE’ again...Hindustan, Bharat and India should become ONE...The day each and every Indian in this country is proud to say “fearlessly” that “I am an Indian” ...will truly be the day of “Independence”... But will that happen? Will you rise to the occasion and save India, when the need arises? Are you willing to give up your life for it? Are you willing to fight for your “rights” and attain true freedom in this country? It’s time to think and reflect as to what Independence day truly means to you. Wake up friends! Wake up! Jai Hind

Chatpat Times Krrish sequel to be shot in the city Rakesh Roshan’s sequel to Krrish, is all set to go on floors this October in Hyderabad and not Mumbai. The set to be completed by late September has been designed to resemble a business hub in Mumbai so that Hrithik can shoot in the very places without the crowds hounding him while he performs his stunts. The script of the film requires Hrithik Roshan, the lead actor who plays a superhero to perform hi-octane stunts in the busy streets of Mumbai. “Hrithik cannot shoot amidst heavy Mumbai traffic.

This would require stopping traffic. The entire city would then come to a halt. Thus shooting in the real streets of Mumbai is practically impossible. Hence, the filmmakers required to have a set erected which would represent Mumbai,” revealed a source. “The idea is to recreate the posh Bandra Kurla Complex. Rakesh Roshan first went to ND studio in Karjat but decided it was not possible to go ahead with the design there. The design would have required him to build roads in the studio, which was not feasible. Plus he was also looking at reducing the production cost as much as possible and building a set in Mumbai would be far more expensive than building one in Hyderabad,” says the source.

he year was 1977; a four years old boy was diagnosed with a hole in his heart. The doctors recommended an open heart surgery, to be performed upon him. If you are dealing with something interesting you will not get tired. We need to make friendship with our brain in order to enhance our memory. After knowing our likes and dislikes we need to break the unwanted links in our brain, they keep forming unwanted associations. Therefore decide your goal. Chalk out your road map to achieve that goal. Coping up with tantrumthrowing Kids Are you embarrassed by your tantrum throwing kids in public places? Chuck Smith, a child development expert has some advice for such parents.

A

re you embarrassed by your tantrum throwing kids in the public places? Well, an expert has offered some advice to parents on how to react in such situations. Chuck Smith, a Kansas State University child development expert, says that when children act out in public, parents don’t always know how best to respond. He affirms that the proper way to react depends on a number of factors including the child’s age, the purpose of the public outing and whether the child’s behaviour even needs to be corrected. Smith says that the golden rule for parents is to set reasonable expectations and to stick to your guns when enforcing them. “Many parents are concerned with the glare of onlookers, so they’ll let their kids get away with things because of the threat. You can’t let a child leverage your own sense of embarrassment in public to get what he or she wants. It’s not that you ignore the public, but you have to decide where your real priority is -- and that is with teaching your child.

You can’t ever lose focus on that,” Smith says. First, Smith says parents should work on developing ageappropriate rules about how their children should behave in public. For example, asking a 5-year-old to be quiet in church or a temple is probably unreasonable. When a child misbehaves, Smith says it’s useful to gently remind them of the rules by asking them whether they can recall what they are supposed to do.

“Then, when they look at you in a confused manner, you firmly remind them of the rule. You don’t ever punish a child for something they didn’t know they weren’t supposed to do,” Smith says. Whatever the behaviour, parents also have to decide whether it’s worth correcting. For example, parents often will negotiate with a child who continues to whine about not getting a toy from the store. Smith calls that sort of behaviour from children irrelevant and adds that it’s perfectly valid to ignore it. “Any response to whining or crying, even punishment, shows that a child is in control and is pulling a parent’s strings. The parent should rise above this noise and remain steadfast to the limit they set. You have to be smarter than the kid and realise that you are not going to be drawn into this,” Smith says. If the parent succumbs to that sort of behaviour - even once they’ll have a long road to hoe before the child will take them seriously again, adds Smith.

Health Times suggests ways to avoid and combat lifestyle diseases

3. Enhance plant based diet and daily intake of fibre Eat a high-fibre diet or a plant-based diet. Switching to a high-fibre diet or plant-based diet, and cutting down on red meat also has huge benefits. The benefits include helping to reduce digestive problems, reduce cholesterol problems, helping to control your blood sugar levels, and facilitating weight loss. A high-fibre diet includes vegetables, fruits, anything grown from plants, nuts and whole grains. 4. Cut down on daily salt intake Reduce your intake of salt. Cutting down on salt will lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke.

5. Exercise regularly Exercise is very important too and must be taken seriously. A sedentary lifestyle is likely to increase the chances of contracting health problems and diseases. Cardio exercises and jogging are good forms of all-round exercise that help to reduce the risks of diseases and help to facilitate a healthy heart. 6. Drink sufficient water Drink plenty of water. Our bodies need water to function properly. Water flushes the system. Use a drinking bottle of 1 litre each, and focus on drinking at least two such every day. That way you can ensure sufficient water intake levels.

7. Use Health Conscious Cookware Try to use ‘healthy cookware’ that allows for cooking with no oil or very little oil. In many cases, an oil spray such as the one-calorie spray can be substituted for fats and oil use where needed in healthy cookware. Cutting out oil from your diet will help in reducing the risk of high cholesterol, obesity and other related lifestyle diseases. Put these things in place, adopt the healthy habits, and you are well on your way to avoiding and managing lifestyle diseases!
