What is it? Free admission to swimming, skating or shinny hockey - from January of the year they are in Grade 5 until August 31st of that year.

This Summer the City of Powell River’s Parks, Recreaaon & Culture department will lead a variety of programs and accvites in our parks and trails to reconnect our residents with our parks and trail systems. Learn about some exciing opportuniies and accviies that you can do in your own back yard. Did you know that the City of Powell River has: Two nine hole disc golf courses. Over 350 km of hikeable and bikeable trails. 462 acres of parks and open spaces. Direct access to one of the most revered hiking trails in the world. A state-of-the-art Bike Skills Park. Spring 3 on 3 Hockey The Spring 3 on 3 Hockey League will run for 8 week and take place 1 evening a week running from the beginning of April until the end of May. Registration Fee includes all 8 sessions. League Organizer will take the registrations and break them down into equal teams prior to the season starting. Volunteer Coaches are the foundation of this league and are essential to its success. Fee $109 – Games will take place between 5pm – 9:30pm and schedule is totally dependant upon registration numbers.

Performance is evaluated based on criteria and swimmers progress to the next level once all Sea Otter skills have been successfully demonstrated. Previous swimming experience is not necessary for this level; however, previous water play will help the swimmer have a more enjoyable experience.

Salamander

Swimmers enter this level when they have successfully completed Sea Otter (or former preschool level 1) and are between the ages of 3-6 years. If your swimmer was working on Salamander skills but are now 6 years old, register in Swim Kids Level 1.

Lifeguard! Bronze Medal Programs Learn lifesaving skills that will last a lifetime. Whether for personal interest or to become a lifeguard, the Bronze Medal awards provide important water safety messages and develop proficiency in lifesaving, resuscitation and water rescue. 100% attendance is required in these programs for full certification. The Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross awards are required pre-requisites for the National Lifeguard program.

Bronze Star

This optional program helps prepare 10-12 year old skilled swimmers for success in Bronze Medallion. Candidates are taught about how to make WaterSmart® choices and learn basic lifesaving and resuscitation skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. Bronze Medallion

Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed continuous swim of 500 metres in under 15 minutes. Includes CPR-A certification. Course is 20 hours consisting of both dry and wet sessions. Canadian Lifesaving Manual provided. Prerequisite Session Day & Time Fee

Bronze Cross

Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance (includes a 600m timed swim) and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the prerequisite awards for all advanced lifeguarding (National Lifeguard) and leadership (Lifesaving Instructor) training programs. Clients can use the follow-up to get some input into their existing programs if they have been training for a few years. Follow-up session will not include a full new program but will include a progression of an original program or a substitution of some exercises that are more appropriate. Hearts in Motion Walking Club

We’re looking for older adults who want to be more physically active! Join our FREE Choose to Move Program and get a customized physical activity program that is based on YOUR interests, goals, ability, and income. When you register in our program you will get your own friendly, trained coach who will support you along the way. By signing up for our unique program you will get: one-on-one meetings with your coach to develop an action plan that will work for you in the long-term, access to group meetings and individual telephone calls to provide ongoing support. The Choose to Move program is free of charge but you need to register.

The Hearts in Motion Walking Clubs are a Heart and Stroke Foundation program designed to encourage people to participate in regular physical activity by walking. Walking is a great way to boost health and energy and it’s easily incorporated into any lifestyle. You can reduce risk factors such as stress, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and body fat by incorporating over thirty minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Walking with a group as your form of social physical activity is a great way to get connected to your community. Walks will occur in various locations around the community. Tim Ladner has been a long time skateboard advocate and instructor with the city of Vancouver teaching skateboard and skimboard classes for the last 15 years, prior to moving to Powell River with his family of 2 kids. He has worked with numerous organizations, including iconic Canadian Skateboard brand Skull Skates, developing and promoting skimboards on BC’s South Coast where he co hosted the Texeda Skimboard jam, and consequently discovered Powell River. With a passion for board sports and youth development Tim has been tirelessly spreading the joy of board sports and wishes to continue his work here in Powell River.

Learn how to cook delicious meals from all around the world! Each week will take you to a new continent, where you will learn about the different ingredients put into famous dishes! Get to know - and fight - invasives

I

nvasive species are a threat to people, property and local ecology, so City of Powell River residents are urged to become familiar with the most threatening species. The most concerning of the invasive species in Powell River are Knotweed, Giant Hogweed and Butterfly Bush. Knotweed is a highly invasive plant that can damage infrastructure, ecological systems, salmon habitat and other important resources. Knotweed is a significant problem to infrastructure, being able to grow underneath the footings of a house and disrupt the foundation. Knotweed can result in difficulties with property insurance or ultimately, problems with housing sales. The only treatment to eradicate Knotweed is to spray a systemic herbicide on it. Hogweed can have impacts to human health. It is photo toxic and extremely damaging to skin, creating unsightly lesions and burns that can reoccur over time.

Butterfly Bush

Butterfly Bush has been added to the list because it could become the next Scotch Broom. If the spread of Butterfly Bush can be caught early enough, the hope is that it won’t be as pervasive as Broom is in the Powell River region. While it is considered a perennial shrub and can still be purchased in many stores, its name suggests that it will attract butterflies with its beautiful flowers, and song birds for the seeds, both of which are true. The trouble is that with 100,000 seeds on an adult plant, the Butterfly Bush is actually pushing out Active Living Guide Spring/Summer 2018

native species that butterflies rely on, damaging both the ecosystem and butterfly habitat. Treatments for invasive species can require some specific measures. While some people advocate sending out excavators to rip up concentrations of invasive species, sometimes such treatments can make the problem of spreading even more significant. For example, the best way of dealing with Broom is to cut it at ground level and to not disturb the ground, which may contain seedlings that will grow if exposed. People trying to control Scotch Broom should “cut their Broom in bloom.” It is suggested that people remove Broom in bloom because that’s the best time to cut the plants with the least opportunity of causing the Broom to regrow. The bloom window is end of April, through May and the beginning of June, after which the seed heads ripen. Many communities on the Vancouver Island have taken

up the fight. For more information, please go to: BroomBusters.org For the vast majority of invasive species, chemical treatments are not necessary. Simply cutting the plants down and properly disposing of them can significantly assist in controlling the problem. The Powell River Regional District is purchasing a burner so that invasive species can be incinerated. The community has also come to tolerate some invasive species, such as blackberries, that have

formed a significant social role in the community, such as the creation of the Blackberry festival. People also consume the berries in desserts and wines. Invasive plant management in Powell River is an ongoing initiative. It is not possible to eradicate all invasive species, but the goal is to control them before they have a chance to spread. While there is provincial legislation, the Weed Control Act, which governs invasive species in British Columbia, enforcement is a difficulty. Work is underway on the creation of a City of Powell River bylaw that would address issues surrounding invasive plants. the only way they would have arrived is through illegal dumping. People often say that “it’s just organics,” but these “organics” have the potential to spread and do great harm. To stop the spread, it’s important for people to be able to identify invasive species, and ultimately, to treat them or remove them responsibly from their properties for proper disposal.
