AQUATICS REGISTRATION - AUGUST 18 AT 7:30 AM GENERAL REGISTRATION - AUGUST 19 AT 7:30 AM ONLINE REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 6:30 AM

Canada’s Tournament Capital

At the Tournament Capital... Sustainability is alive and well in our parks and recreation facilities and is constantly evolving to support the goals set out in the Sustainable Kamloops Plan. Some of these initiatives are highly-visible while others may be happening quietly in the background.

Tournament Capital Centre Zero Waste Program

The new Zero Waste diversion stations at TCC provide patrons with the opportunity to make the green choice and divert their waste for recycling or composting rather than burying it in a landfill. Jora composters are hard at work at the TCC composting more than 2600 kg of facility organic compostable waste annually, all while producing a soil enhancer that is used on TCC gardens lowering the need for fertilizers.

Creating Healthy Environments

Did you know that under the Hillside Stadium field is a geothermal system that helps heat and cool the TCC, avoiding the release of over 970 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year? Did you know that the new reusable wipe down cloths at all of the TCC’s fitness gyms prevent 5,700 kg of waste from entering the landfill every year while saving the City $8,700 in annual operational costs? Did you know that the ISC ice resurfacer produces zero emissions as it is 100% powered by electricity?

Promoting Active & Clean Transportation

Why not walk, ride or cycle to one of our City Parks or Recreation facilities, or take advantage of the many nearby bus stops? The TCC’s Fast Charging station provides certainty and clean energy to electric vehicle owners allowing them to drive our city streets emission free. We really do appreciate those drivers who refrain from idling their vehicles at City facilities and who are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of the air we breathe.

It Takes a Community to Achieve Sustainability

Many of these sustainability initiatives are also planned for the City’s other Parks and Recreation facilities. What is even more important is that all of these sustainability initiatives can be employed at home as well. Composting, growing your own food, installing energy efficient lighting, carpooling, recycling, using chemical free cleaners, and air drying laundry are just a few of the simple things you and your family can do at home to contribute to the community’s overall sustainability, and your family’s own health and wellness.

For more information on the Sustainable Kamloops Plan visit www.kamloops.ca/sustainable.

Sustainable Recreation

Recreation provides multiple pathways to well-being for individuals and communities in both indoor and outdoor environments, and is an integral part of community sustainability. Kamloops is fortunate to have a diverse range of recreational facilities, organized sport and leisure programs available throughout the community - many of which are featured in this guide. Kamloops’ abundance of parks and trail networks offer opportunities to participate in passive recreational activities such as walking, hiking, and cycling. Together, these recreational opportunities enable Kamloops residents to enjoy a high quality of life. Community recreation also benefits from a sustainable system of support that includes people and organizations, facilities and natural areas. Balancing the needs of natural ecosystems with those of recreational users, and providing sustainable facilities and services that have no greater ecological footprint than is necessary, helps to ensure long-term access to the benefits of active living and social well-being. Throughout this Activity Guide we highlight City initiatives that support sustainable recreation and share some tips to get you and your family thinking about how you can promote sustainability while you are at work, home or play.

y Famil

Although we sometimes complain about setting the table, helping prepare dinner and washing the dishes, the evening ritual of sitting down together each night over food brings families together. By spending this time with one another you have the ability to talk to each other and hear about everyone’s day. Having meals together allows an opportunity for the family to talk openly to each other comfortably. Some Conversation dos and don’ts: • Do not ask questions that have a “yes” or “no” answer. • Pick a topic/theme – holidays, sports, music, movies etc. • Talk about upcoming weekend activities. • Keep the conversation light and fun. • Talk about what you might make for dinner tomorrow night.

Children Finding balance for your child

Our community there are some many great opportunities for your children to be active in; local community events, after-school lessons, to joining a club organization. Organized activities can help your children to gain skills and self-confidence, make friends and learn new things, too much structured activity can take the enjoyment out of the activity and may contribute to anxiety and pressure for your children and yourself. Ask yourself these questions to help determine whether your child is overscheduled: • Do your children enjoy their extracurricular activities? Do you enjoy them? • What does the activity accomplish? • Is it being done out of habit? • Do you feel like your children need to be in activities because everyone else is, too? • Do your children spend so much time in activities that you don’t know what else is going on in their lives? Remember set aside dedicate time for the family to be together. Taking a few minutes to relax after getting home from a busy day help family members to reconnect.

THE BALANCING ACT

You are a full time high school student, you march with the school band, compete on the swim team, have a part time job, and you want to hang out more with your friends. All of these activities feel like they are top priority, and there is never enough time to do everything you want to do. Does this sound like you? These tips will help you regain some balance in your life.

School/Studies Doing well in school will lay the groundwork for your success as an adult. Set time aside every afternoon or evening to do homework or study. Don’t procrastinate, assignments won’t go away and may actually be more difficult to do if you wait until the last minute. Extracurricular Activities are Important Too Decide what you really love to do and pursue that. Don’t try to be involved in everything. Spend Time with People Who Share Your Interests Schedule time with your friends, good relationships will develop into great relationships if you nurture them. Time for a Part-time Job Working too many hours while you are going to school full time is likely to create undue stress in your life. It also affects your ability to do well in school or to enjoy your free time. By prioritizing all the things you do and organizing your time, you will use your time most effectively. This is key to keeping the balance in your life now and for many years to come.
