Be kind to our community Please recycle this guide! This guide is published by

It doesn’t matter how young or old you are, it doesn’t cost any money and it doesn’t take much time. Start each day by declaring, “I’m going to do something to fill someone’s bucket today.” And at the end of each day ask yourself, “Did I fill a bucket today?” These words from Carol McCloud’s children’s book “Have You Filled a Bucket Today” encourage us to think of ways to make our home, school, workplace and community happier places to be. So how do you fill a bucket? All you need to do is show kindness to someone by saying or doing something nice or simply smiling at them. When we fill someone’s bucket, we fill our own bucket too. Teaching our children to express kindness and love leads to happier lives. In today’s society we are so busy racing from one activity to the next that we may overlook the opportunity to connect with those around us. Attitudes and relationships contribute considerably to our happiness. According to actionforhappiness.org, there are 10 keys to happier living: GREAT DREAM

Giving - Do things for others Relating – Connect with people Exercising – Take care of your body Appreciating – Notice the world around Trying out – Keep learning new things Direction – Have goals to look forward to Resilience – Find ways to bounce back Emotion – Take a positive approach Acceptance – Be comfortable with who you are Meaning – Be part of something bigger We challenge you to create GREAT DREAMS and become bucket fillers in our community! kamloops.ca/recreation 250.828.3500

Aquatics Boating Safety

Canadian men are four times more likely to drown than women. And while boating-related fatalities have trended downward over the past 10 years, still 80% of victims in boating deaths are not wearing life jackets. On the road, you wear your seat belt because you know you won’t have time to put it on in an accident. On the water, think about your life jacket the same way. It won’t work if you don’t wear it. Top Tips for Safe Boating 1. Cold water is deadlier than you think. Prepare for the shock of cold water – always wear a life jacket. 2. Alcohol and boating do not mix. Leave the alcohol onshore. 3. Check the forecast. Return to shore immediately if bad weather approaches. 4. Obey all warning signs and buoys. 5. Drive powerboats responsibly – use appropriate speed, especially when the water is choppy. 6. Stay seated! You can easily fall out of a small powerboat, canoe or kayak. 7. Be prepared. Ensure your vessel has the required safety gear on board and sufficient fuel. 8. Carry a VHF radio or cell phone with you when on the water. 9. Always tell someone where you are going and when you will return. 10. Get trained. Learn how to survive an unexpected fall into the water. 14

Have fun and be safe on the water this spring and summer. Safety tips courtesy of the Lifesaving Society. Visit kamloops.ca/swim for more water safety information.

Early Years Prince Charles Park

Get out and enjoy this spring and summer at Prince Charles Park. This park is a hidden gem in the City Centre. Each year this park attracts many events such as the Teddy Bear Picnic, a car show hosted by the Kamloops Street Rod Association, and Project X Theatre Group. Not only does this park offer the amazing community events it is also equipped with a toddler’s pool that was upgraded in 2014 along with an accessible playground. Often on a weekend you can see children playing soccer, celebrating birthdays, and families enjoying a picnic.

26

Did you know?

The old playground equipment at Prince Charles was refurbished and sent to Nicaragua. The new playground and pool surfaces are made of recycled rubber. There were approximately 1250 used tires or 8750 lbs of recycled tires for the pool surface alone. The accessible playground’s surface is easy to walk on and is easily accessed with a wheelchair, power cart or stroller.

Wanting to do a creative and fun project with our children in your own backyard? Through the use of natural and recyclables items invite tiny Fairy’s to come for a visit. Fairy homes can be built in one area of your garden or in a planter for a patio garden. Incorporate many natural items that a fairy might find around your garden, such as moss, pinecones and other seeds and twigs to your creative design.

Children

Fill you backpack—what your child should take in their backpack for a summer day

During the warmer months, your children’s backpack can be key to having a successful day. Filling it with all the necessary items will ensure your child (and you) has a great day, no matter what the activity is. Challenging your child(ren) to fill their own backpack will encourage them to be responsible for their belongings and teach them what they need for a hot day. Cutting out pictures of the items and displaying them will allow even nonreaders to gather supplies and prepare for their day. Necessities include sun screen and hat, a water bottle and snack. Other items you may want to consider including are: sun glasses, a change of clothes, a book, emergency contact information, and a small first aid kit. Also, you may want to suggest including a few ziplock bags for any treasures you find along the way! A little preplanning and teamwork can go a long way when planning a successful outing with your child(ren). Encouraging your little one(s) to fill their own bag will help them feel a part of the planning process and start your day out on a positive note.

Sun Safety Tips A sunburn on a child can happen within 15 minutes. Remember: • Apply sunscreen, which protects from both UVA and UVB rays, at least 1530 minutes before going outside. • Reapplied after sweating and swimming to ensure one doesn’t end up with a nasty burn. • Wearing hat and sun safe clothing can help avoid a sun burn. • During the hottest parts of the day is a great opportunity to check out the Kamloops Museum or your local library For more information check out www.kidshealth.org

18 year old Joe Hicketts, who plays for the WHL’s Victoria Royals, realized a dream on January 5th, 2015, becoming the first player born and raised in Kamloops to win gold at World Juniors, since Mark Recchi did it in 1988! Smaller in stature than the average defensemen, Hicketts has proven himself as a player with high hockey IQ and competitiveness. An injury-riddled 2013-2014 year kept him from being drafted initially; however, as the highestscoring defenceman in Canadian major-junior hockey, with 38 points, he was eventually signed by the Detroit Red Wings and added to the Team Canada roster! Congratulations Joe! Thank you for inspiring a nation with your effort and heart, proving it’s not how big you are but how big you play!

The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child first see the orthodontist no later than age 7. Many orthodontic problems are easier to correct if they are detected early, and timely treatment can prevent more serious corrections later in life. We are the experts in determining whether orthodontic treatment is valuable to a child – call for your complimentary consultation today.
