Dine with your Dog

Last month, dog lovers across the UK were encouraged to scrap the expensive dinner plans and cook up one of the dog and human-friendly meals in a new cookbook, ‘Dine with your DogTrusted Treats & Recipes’, with the help of TikTok star Chasity Hobbs.

In a recent TikTok video, Chas at @through.the.lleaves shares how to make delicious Slobber-worthy Salmon Fish Cakes, that only need a few additions to make them perfect for humans, too.

Speaking to her 1.7M TikTok followers, Chas says: “If you enjoy a good date night with a loyal companion, then this recipe book is for you. We got a sneak peek of the recipe book and we are so excited to try these out – I can already tell that Zuko is going to love them!”.

A recent survey finds that over half of UK pet parents (58%) prefer to snuggle up on the sofa with their pooch than their partner, showing that pets really are the top dogs when it comes to love.

The survey also found over four in five (82%) owners report feeling guilty about going out for the evening and leaving their pets behind. But now, pet owners can relax at home with their fur-ever Valentine and have the restaurant come

to them!

Chas has been cooking up a tasty storm with TrustedHousesitters recipes, who released their ‘Dine with your Dog - Trusted Treats & Recipes’ cookbook in time for Valentine’s Day. With a variety of easy recipes, dog lovers can treat their pets to culinary delights, such as Slobberworthy Salmon Fish Cakes and Peanut Butter Banana Pup-Cakes, no matter their chef skills.

To whip up the Slobber-worthy Salmon Fish Cakes for their four-legged Valentine, owners simply need to:

1. Preheat oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

2. Combine a can of salmon, 65g brown rice flour, 65g oat flour, 1 egg and 20g fresh parsley.

3. Roll mixture into balls, place on the baking tray, and bake for 25-30 minutes

Tip for humans: This recipe contains all human-safe ingredients so you and your four-pawed pal can share! Just add

a dressed salad and a wedge of lemon to your portion.

Angela Laws, Head of Community at TrustedHousesitters, commented on the newly created recipes:

“With pet parents feeling guilty about leaving their beloved pets at home, we decided it was time to rewrite the cookbook and create something that owners and pets alike can enjoy this Valentine’s Day.

“It’s great to see Chas follow along, and it was even better to see a lickedclean plate once Zuko had finished his delicious treats!”

The full range of pooch-friendly recipes can be found in the TrustedHousesitters online cookbook.

Whenever you give your dog new food, be sure to consult with your vet if you’re unsure of individual dietary requirements.

Love Your Pet Day

Love Your Pet Day celebrates the special connection between people and their animal companions. Love Your Pet Day fell on Tuesday 20th of February this year and it was the perfect time to show gratitude for the joy, love, and companionship our pets bring into our lives.

Cats tend to be very loyal and show a strong devotion to their owners. While it is often evident when we express love and affection to our feline companions, their affectionate gestures can be less straightforward.

“Let’s take a moment to appreciate the unique bond we share with our cats and cherish the happiness they bring into our world” says James Whitten, Marketing Manager at petGuard.

Every cat is different, and your kitty may have their own special way of telling you that they are enjoying your company. However, there are a few common signs that our cats show to let us know they are. The leading pet insurer petGuard shares the most common signs:

Headbutting

In humans, headbutting is far from a sign of affection. In cats though, headbutting is a clear sign that your cat loves you. Also known as bunting, your cat is actually trying to rub their scent on to you using glands in their forehand, lips

and cheeks.

Cheek Rubs

Cats have a lot of scent glands around their heads. They have scent glands in their cheeks, forehead, neck and ears. By bunting and rubbing their cheeks against things, cats will activate these scent glands and rub them as a way of claiming ownership of you or marking their territory.

Following you around

If your cat can’t get enough of you, then they’ll happily follow you around the house. Cats love being around those they’re close to, so you might find them following you around from room to room.

“If your cat is feeling particularly affectionate, they are likely to try and get as close as they can to you, lying on you, touching you and generally enjoying as much of your company as they can” adds Whitten.

STORMBRANDS X Pets at Home

STORMBRANDS has partnered with Pets at Home to bring clarity, convenience and visual appeal to the burgeoning pets health sector. The brand, design and communications agency created a new health and wellbeing own label range for the retailer, changing the way people shop for their pets to support their health and happiness.

Anew generation of ‘pet parents’ are prioritising the health and wellness of their pets more than ever before, caring for them in the same way we care for ourselves. Rather than just reacting to ailments, they are looking to support pets’ general wellbeing and happiness, both inside and out, minimising those expensive trips to the vet. Consumer demand is driving more products and choices, which can be tricky to navigate and trust. Pets at Home set out to create a one-stop wellness hub within its stores that makes it easier for pet parents to navigate health and wellness and empower them with decision-making confidence.

STORMBRANDS has created a Health and Wellbeing family identity that brings together diverse consumer need-states across a broad product range and three price tiers. With categories such as joint care, calming, skin and coat and grooming, STORMBRANDS created a need-state-informed architectural design system that simplifies the shopper journey and borrows cues and codes from other categories to help navigation.

Category-led colour coding, functional reasons to believe and a helpful and trusted tone of voice were all important parts of the system, while happy and healthy art-directed pet imagery was employed to pull on the heartstrings and dial up the emotional benefit of proactively looking after your pet. The system was also designed to tier through good, better, best, with principles that allowed for colour flex, additional and helpful information, iconography and substrates and finishes that dialled up higher prices points.

“Knowing how important pet health

and happiness is for owners these days, our design approach delivers an experience that’s immediately less clinical and more accessible than visiting the vet. The in-depth design principles we put in place have given Pets at Home the structure and guidance it needed to rollout across multiple categories, tiers and formats ultimately ensuring that it could provide absolute clarity and maximum convenience to its customers,” said Zoe Phillipson, Creative Director of STORMBRANDS.

“Our customers want to feel empowered to make the right choices

to protect their pet’s health and wellbeing,” said Clair Tapson, Brand Creative Manager, Pets at Home, “but with too much choice and not enough knowledge, it can be overwhelming. STORMBRANDS has helped us simplify and demystify what can be a complex category to navigate and improve our customers’ experience. As our agency partner, the team has helped us create a Health and Wellbeing identity that our customers can trust to support their pets’ health and happiness throughout their lifetime.”

The Benefits of Being Qualified

Haddon Training are an award-winning Training Provider offering the accredited Dog Groomer apprenticeship across England. Let’s explore the five key benefits of being a qualified dog groomer with Haddon Training.

Comprehensive Training Across Breeds and Coat Types

One of the standout advantages of the Dog Groomer apprenticeship is the comprehensive training it provides. The curriculum has been specifically designed to equip learners with the skills needed to conduct a range of grooms including those on specific coat types, including the wire, wool, wool mix, or silky coats. This ensures that qualified groomers are not only versatile but also capable of meeting the unique grooming needs of various dog breeds.

Industry-Driven Curriculum

The qualification goes beyond grooming techniques, encompassing crucial aspects such as bathing, drying, and styling for various breeds. Learners also delve into legislative and regulatory considerations, canine health, basic first aid, and the art of providing excellent customer service, creating well-rounded professionals, capable of navigating the complexities of the industry.

Entirely Work-Based Learning

One of the primary benefits of Haddon Training’s Dog Groomer apprenticeship is their commitment to a practical, work-based learning approach. Unlike traditional classroom settings, this course places a strong emphasis on hands-on experience within a professional dog grooming establishment. Learners can apply their skills in a practical setting, enabling them to develop a deeper practical understanding of the intricacies of dog grooming.

Supported by Industry Experienced Trainer Coaches

The apprenticeship is supported by Haddon Training’s industry-experienced Trainer Coaches. Led by Animal Care and Business Area Manager, Kirsten Clements, the Trainer Coaches are experts within the field of dog grooming and bring a wealth of functional knowledge and expertise to the learning process. This close support enhances the learning experience and provides learners with a firsthand understanding of the industry’s best practices, current trends, and real-world challenges. Apprentices can confidently navigate their grooming tasks with the assurance

that they are being guided by experts.

Career Advancement and Opportunities

In the final stages of their apprenticeship, learners are required to successfully complete an end-point assessment, which assesses the skills and knowledge they have acquired throughout the course. If learners are successful in completing this assessment, they are awarded a recognised qualification that may enhance their advancement within the field of dog grooming. This accredited certification provides graduates with credibility and opportunities within a highly competitive sector.

Insurance

Importance of insurance

If you’re in the business of keeping our furry friends looking sharp and feeling fresh, then you know just how rewarding and downright delightful it can be.

But amidst all the wagging tails and slobbery kisses, there’s one crucial aspect of your grooming gig that you might be overlooking: insurance. Yep, that’s right, insurance isn’t just for the big shots in suits; it’s for us paw-sionate professionals too. So, grab a comfy spot, settle in with your favourite pooch, and let’s chat about why having insurance is an absolute must in the world of dog grooming.

First things first, let’s address the elephant in the room (or should I say, the Great Dane?): accidents happen. No matter how careful and skilled you are with those clippers and shears, there’s always a chance that something could go awry. Maybe Fido squirms a bit too much during his nail trim and ends up with a tiny nick, or perhaps Spot gets a little too excited during his bath and slips, causing a minor injury. While these incidents may seem minor, they can quickly escalate into major headaches without the proper insurance coverage.

INSURANCE

Having insurance means you can groom with peace of mind, knowing that you’re protected financially in case of accidents or unexpected mishaps. Whether it’s covering veterinary bills for an injured pup, reimbursing a client for damaged property, or even defending against potential lawsuits, insurance acts as your trusty safety net in the unpredictable world of dog grooming. Plus, it shows your clients that you’re a responsible and professional groomer who takes their craft seriously—a win-win for both you and your furry clientele.

But wait, there’s more! Insurance isn’t just about protecting your assets; it’s also about safeguarding your reputation and livelihood. In today’s digital age, word travels fast, and a single negative incident can spread like wildfire on social media, tarnishing your hard-earned reputation in the blink of an eye. With insurance, you have the support and resources to handle any PR snafus that may arise, ensuring that your business remains resilient in the face of adversity. After all, a happy groomer makes for happy pups, and happy pups make for happy clients!

Now, let’s talk about the future of insurance for dog groomers. As we dive deeper into 2024, we can expect to see exciting advancements and innovations in insurance tailored specifically to our four-legged clientele. Picture this: customisable coverage plans designed with the unique needs of dog groomers in mind, offering everything from enhanced liability protection to specialised equipment coverage. With the rise of technology and data analytics, insurance companies are better equipped than ever to tailor policies to the individual needs of dog groomers, providing personalised coverage that fits like a perfectly groomed coat.

Furthermore, we can anticipate streamlined claims processes and faster payouts, thanks to advancements in digital documentation and artificial intelligence. No more endless paperwork or waiting weeks for reimbursement— just quick and hassle-free claims resolution, so you can get back to doing what you love: making tails wag and pups look pawsitively fabulous. So, if you haven’t already jumped on the insurance bandwagon, now’s the time to do so! Trust me, your future self—and your furry clients—will thank you for it.

Let’s dive deeper into how insurance for dog groomers could get even better in 2024.

One exciting possibility is the development of more customisable coverage options. Just like every pup has their own unique personality and needs, every dog grooming business has its own set of risks and requirements. In 2024, insurance companies could offer tailored plans that allow groomers to choose the specific coverage they need, whether it’s increased liability protection for busy grooming salons or specialised equipment coverage

for mobile groomers on the go. This level of customisation ensures that dog groomers are getting the most bang for their buck, with coverage that fits their business like a snug collar.

Another area ripe for improvement is the claims process. Let’s face it: dealing with insurance claims can be a hassle, often involving mountains of paperwork and endless back-and-forth with insurance adjusters. But fear not, because advancements in technology are poised to streamline the claims process like never before. Imagine being able to file a claim with just a few

INSURANCE 18 totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk

clicks on your smartphone, complete with digital documentation and instant verification. Thanks to innovations in artificial intelligence and digital recordkeeping, insurance companies can process claims faster and more efficiently than ever, getting dog groomers back on their feet—and back to grooming—in no time.

Furthermore, as society becomes increasingly pet-centric, we can expect to see a greater emphasis on petcentric insurance products and services. In addition to traditional coverage options like liability insurance and property insurance, dog groomers may have access to specialised policies designed specifically for the unique risks and challenges of working with animals. This could include coverage for grooming-related injuries or illnesses, as well as protection against claims of negligence or professional misconduct. By addressing the specific needs of dog groomers, insurance companies can provide more comprehensive coverage that truly reflects the realities of the pet grooming industry.

Overall, the future of insurance for dog groomers is looking brighter than ever. With customisable coverage options, streamlined claims processes, and specialised policies tailored to the needs of pet professionals, dog groomers can rest easy knowing that they’re protected against the unexpected. So, whether you’re a seasoned grooming veteran or just starting out in the bis, investing in insurance is a smart move that will pay off in peace of mind and protection for years to come. Here’s to a future where every dog groomer has the insurance coverage they need to thrive in a world filled with wagging tails and happy pups!

Insurance isn’t just a boring necessity; it’s a paw-some tool that every dog groomer should have in their arsenal. From protecting against accidents and liabilities to safeguarding your reputation and livelihood, insurance provides invaluable peace of mind in the unpredictable world of pet grooming. And with exciting advancements on the horizon, there’s never been a better time to invest in insurance tailored specifically to the needs of dog groomers. So, here’s to a future filled with wagging tails, happy pups, and insurance policies as fabulous as a freshly groomed poodle’s pom-poms!

Laura’s Pampered Pooches

What can you tell me about your dog grooming business?

I started my business in February 2022 alongside my full-time role as a Professional Photographer in the Royal Air Force, where I was stationed at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus at the time.

I took a two-month break from my military role to train as a dog groomer in the UK, as part of a resettlement package offered by the RAF, before returning to Cyprus where I started expanding on the skills I’d learnt part-time, in my evenings and at weekends, building up my equipment and client base.

When I left the Air Force in Jan 2023 I went straight into dog grooming fulltime, from my new home salon, and my business has been growing ever since. I’m excited to see how my business will develop over time, intrigued to learn

more and more new things that’ll help me on my journey and can’t wait to meet all my future new clients!

What would you say is your unique selling point?

I am very blunt! I still have a large military market due to two British bases locally, so lots of Brits as well as customers from everywhere else in the world, and most of them appreciate my straight-talking honesty and northern English directness and humour!

I try not to hurt anyone’s feelings but if a customer isn’t looking after their dog properly, I’m not afraid to advise how to do things better, and I often recommend grooms to clients based on the best welfare of the dog and manageability by the client, rather than what will be cutest or most fashionable.

I consider myself a welfare groomer

and will never do anything if it’s not in the best interest of the dog, but luckily most all my clients are on the same page and understand when I explain what best suits the needs of the dogs. I’ve also never owned a dog, which many people find amusing!

What can you tell me about how you trained to be a dog groomer?

I trained at Four Paws Grooming School in Leftwich, an amazing establishment that teaches you everything you need to know about grooming and salon management, in whatever time frame suits you.

As I was over from Cyprus in the UK just to train, I did the entire course in 30 working days, 6 days a week, studying and completing coursework in the evenings, until I completed my Level 3

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH

certification.

The training was hands-on from day one and there were numerous instructors on hand to help, inform and guide me through my journey to becoming a groomer. Prior to the course, I’d never groomed a dog in my life!

Do you have any “hidden gems” you’d like to share with our readers?

Never stop learning. Invest in courses, attend seminars, follow lots of other groomers and grooming pages on social media and take note of differing techniques and tools to try.

Although I was taught a certain way there is flex to achieve the same results in numerous different ways once you’ve got the basics, you just need to watch others and constantly try out new things.

As well as grooming-specific learning I am also trying to improve my knowledge of dog behaviour, holistic therapies, relaxation and massage techniques as well as business knowledge as it all helps build a better understanding of the industry and our client’s welfare.

I also find it keeps me enthusiastic and motivated when the job gets difficult or tedious as learning new skills is very exciting when you get to put them into practice and see positive results.

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH

What advice would you give to other dog groomers who are just starting out in the industry?

Absolutely get professional training rather than going it alone if you can. It’s so important to learn the correct handling techniques for dogs and equipment before any bad habits are created or being told outdated or incorrect information.

Our industry can be so dangerous if tools aren’t used correctly and the risk of injury to dogs or you is high. When you are taught by a recognised trainer who is following a syllabus you know that the information you are gaining is legitimate and can be confident that you are grooming to the highest standards.

Being certified also demonstrates your quality as a groomer and enhances your professionalism.

Are there any general thoughts you’d like to share?

I love the freedom of being selfemployed and highly recommend it to anyone who can give it a go. My business is still growing, and I have a lot to learn but it’s great to have control over my own hours, direction of business and working schedule. Our industry is very rewarding, but life is for living at the end

of the day and we must love our work as well as enjoy our downtime.

Look after your body, wear PPE when grooming and hopefully you can carry on happily grooming for as long as you want!

Training to be the best!

What’s in store for the future of dog grooming training? Let’s find out!

These unsung heroes of the pet world are more than just fur stylists; they’re like the personal stylists for our canine companions, making sure they strut their stuff with pride. So, grab a treat and settle in as we explore why dog groomers and their training are the real MVPs of the pet care world.

First things first, let’s bark about the importance of dog groomers. Sure, giving Fido a bath at home might seem like a walk in the park, but there’s a whole lot more to grooming than just a scrub and a rinse. Dog groomers are trained professionals who know the ins and outs of keeping your pup looking spiffy from nose to tail. They’re skilled in everything from trimming nails and cleaning ears to styling fur and even giving those adorable puppy haircuts.

But it’s not just about aesthetics;

grooming is essential for your dog’s health and well-being too! Regular grooming helps prevent pesky problems like matting, which can lead to skin irritation and discomfort for your furry friend. Plus, it gives groomers the chance to spot any potential health issues early on, from skin infections to ticks and fleas. Think of them as the frontline defenders against doggy disasters!

Now, let’s talk training. Being a dog groomer isn’t just about having a love for pups and a pair of scissors; it takes serious skill and know-how. That’s why proper training is crucial for anyone looking to pursue a career in dog grooming. From learning about different breeds and their specific grooming needs to mastering various grooming techniques, a comprehensive training program sets groomers up for success in the salon.

But hey, being a dog groomer isn’t all work and no play! Sure, there’s plenty of sudsing and snipping involved, but there’s also the joy of building bonds

with both furry clients and their humans. It’s like being part of one big, happy petloving family!

Now, let’s fast forward to 2024 and talk about how dog grooming training could level up even more. With advancements in technology and teaching methods, the future of grooming education is looking brighter than ever. There has even been some speculation in the industry about virtual reality simulations that allow aspiring groomers to practice their skills on lifelike digital dogs before ever picking up a pair of shears. Talk about pawsome!

And with a greater emphasis on continuing education and specialisation, groomers could have the opportunity to fine-tune their skills in specific areas like hand-stripping or Asian fusion grooming. It’s all about giving groomers the tools they need to excel in their craft and provide top-notch care for our fourlegged friends.

Imagine being able to step into a virtual salon environment where you can

They could practice everything from bathing and brushing to intricate grooming styles, all while receiving instant feedback and guidance from virtual mentors. This immersive learning experience could revolutionise the way grooming education is approached, making it more accessible and engaging for students.

Additionally, the future of grooming training could involve a greater emphasis on continuing education and specialisation. Just like human hairstylists can specialise in cutting, colouring, or styling, dog groomers could have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of expertise. For example, some groomers might choose to specialise in hand-stripping techniques for breeds like terriers, while others might excel in creative grooming styles like Asian fusion or geometric patterns. By offering specialised training programs and certifications, groomers could further elevate their skills and cater to the diverse needs and preferences of pet owners.

Furthermore, advancements in online learning platforms and resources could make grooming training more accessible to a wider audience. With the rise of remote and hybrid learning models, aspiring groomers could have the flexibility to complete coursework and hands-on training from anywhere in the world. Online grooming academies could provide comprehensive curriculum, instructional videos, and interactive modules, allowing students to learn at their own pace and schedule. This flexibility could be particularly beneficial for individuals who are unable to attend traditional brick-and-mortar grooming schools due to location, schedule constraints, or other commitments.

Overall, the future of dog grooming training in 2024 holds exciting possibilities for innovation and improvement. From virtual reality simulations to specialised education pathways, groomers of tomorrow could have access to advanced tools and resources that empower them to excel in their craft. By embracing these advancements and investing in quality education, the pet care industry can ensure that groomers are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to provide exceptional care for our beloved

furry friends.

So, there you have it, folks! The scoop on why dog groomers and their training are the real bark stars of the pet care world. Whether they’re fluffing up a poodle or pampering a pug, these dedicated professionals deserve a round of ap-paws for all they do. The future of dog grooming looks brighter and fluffier than ever before!

This month I passed the in-depth Recover Guidelines Rescuer Certification, and I’m urging all Pet Professionals caring for Pets to make sure their CPR training is up to scratch.

With more dog owners in the UK than ever before, canine first aid training is a growing sector, and there are a number of Veterinary Professionals teaching around the country.

While it is wonderful that more people have access to a course, it is essential that rules are in place for trainers to update their skills regularly.

The Recover Guidelines Rescuer Certification is really challenging and includes some really stressful elements like a hands on multi-person resuscitation. It really made me think about my own skills, but also how important it is that as teachers we acknowledge that education never stops.

I think that every canine first aid tutor should be attending refresher courses at the very least, as it is possible for us all to get rusty. It could be the difference

between teaching someone how to save their dog’s life, and not getting it right at all.”

I’m a vocal supporter of the national Safe Pets and People campaign, which is calling for all pet professionals such as dog walkers and dog groomers to have to take a first aid course.

But just like those sectors, I’m now calling for a standard of excellence among trainers too.

It is really important that as canine first

aid trainers we have high standards, and I would love to see more guidelines in place. This is a wonderful industry full of wonderful people, and it needs to be something that the public can trust.

Tips which could prevent a costly trip to the vet

Buy a first aid kit and do a first aid course: Having a first aid kit in the house or at your salon can really help when there is a minor bump or scrape. Coupled

with taking a canine first aid course, you are investing in your dog’s or your doggy clients’ wellbeing, but will also know when to call the vet. Some owners or professionals react too soon when something happens with a dog, knowing what to do yourself will help you to know when it’s an actual emergency and not just something that can be dealt with easily.

I recommend my specially designed first aid kits, and visit my website www. rachelbean.co.uk to find out about taking a first aid course with a qualified professional.

Feed a good diet: Natural foods help to keep your dog’s insides healthy and this article gives some great recipes. Keeping your dog healthy on the inside will show on the outside with strong teeth and claws, a glossy coat and more energy. If you don’t have time to make food at home, I recommend Paleo Ridge which has exactly the natural nutrients that your dog needs.

Always avoid rawhide chews, as they are processed and difficult for your dog to digest. They can also cause choking incidents which would require a frightening vet visit.

Brush your dog’s teeth: Like claw clipping this does require patience and training, but tooth brushing at home can be a fantastic bonding exercise. Dentals are costly at the vets, and by caring for your dog’s teeth most days you will be saving yourself a lot of money, and your dog potential tooth loss and dental pain.

Walk your dog: It goes without saying, but a good walk helps to keep your dog happy and healthy. In my practice I see so many dogs that are overweight, and this can lead to other health complications which require costly medication. Look up your dog’s breed type for the length of walking needed every day, but all dogs benefit from daily exercise.

Play with your dog: Just like walking, play time is an endorphin booster and a great way to bond with your pet and teach them new tricks. Many dogs are now being treated for depression and anxiety which can require medication. While all cases are different and no dog is the same, making time for bonding and play is a great way to get those happy hormones flowing.

Grooming Older Cats

Working with older cats is something I do frequently and is one of my favourite parts of my job. They often lose the motivation to groom themselves or have health issues which make it more difficult to keep their fur in top condition. Ideally, guardians would have their cat used to the grooming process from a young age so if problems set in as the cat ages it isn’t a new concept, but not everyone has heard of cat grooming or hasn’t got a local specialist in their area. Here are five things to consider when working with older cats. Bt Katie Gwilt.

Joint Pain and Mobility

I usually assume that all older cats (for cats 10 is a senior and 15 a super senior) will have some back leg joint pain whether the guardian tells me or not. I always bear this in mind when handling the older cats. If you work on a table have something soft on top that makes it more comfortable for the senior cat. A yoga mat or a thick towel work well as a cushion. I often work with senior cats on my lap now for extra comfort and am very careful around the back legs and hips. Check how far you are extending the back legs and observe if the cat prefers not to sit or lie down during the groom and don’t force anything. Give them the opportunity to move as required if they start to get stiff sitting in one position too and allow extra time for breaks if needed. I try to watch how the cats move and make a note of any mobility issues in my computer system so I can help to spot any early warning signs. Be aware that due to back leg and hip pain, older cats may not like to be rolled onto one or both sides. Bear this in mind and let the cat show you how they are comfortable for you to groom them.

Toilet Issues

Older cats are more likely to go to the toilet during grooming. They regularly sleep more (and cats have the reputation of sleeping lots anyway!) so are often woken up for a groom and may need the toilet and not be able to tell you. They also aren’t able to hold the need as well as when they were younger. Monitor the cat and see if you can spot any signs they need a toilet break. If you work in a salon

have a litter tray to hand at all times for such occasions.

Deal with any issues calming and quickly, disinfect the area and see if the cat is ready to continue afterwards.

Health Problems

Senior cats are prone to many health problems as well as arthritis and joint pain. Three common ones are hyperthyroidism (dogs in contrast are much more prone to hypothyroidism), chronic kidney disease and diabetes. All

three will show early signs in the fur and coat of the cat. They all have an increase in thirst and urination which can present as dry skin (dandruff), excess shedding or greasy fur. Keep a note if you spot changes over time with the cats in your care and without diagnosing do let the guardian know if you spot anything unusual. You can also keep a track of the cats weight and body shape when grooming. You are in a great position to notice weight loss or gain and can again alert the guardian and potentially catch

FELINE FOCUS
36 totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk

a problem and give them access to an early diagnosis and treatment form their veterinarian.

Warmth

Keeping older cats warm is important for their welfare and comfort. Make are you have a warm environment to work in and have blankets and towels for them to snuggle up in as required. A heat mat for your table is worth considering too. Heat is great for soothing any joint pain but always make sure that they can move away from the heat if it isn’t to their liking. Think warm but not hot so as you don’t burn them. Have a chat with guardians about where the cats bed is at home and stress keeping it away from drafty places where possible. If you are bathing a senior cat use warm water (not hot) and make sure to dry them properly so they don’t get too cold. Have a think about the time of year you are grooming the cat and what the temperature is like outside. If the cat goes out regularly and it is winter, is a lion cut the best idea or do you want to try and save as much fur as possible?

Consider Mobile Visits

Have a think if you are able to do some mobile visits to senior and super senior cats. Cats as a rule aren’t great at travelling in cars and going in carriers and they can arrive at the salon confused and stressed before you even start the grooming process. If you are able to go to them in their home environment it can keep the disruption to a minimum and make the process go smoother. Also consider having their guardian present for the groom so they have a reassuring presence nearby. I know my older cat Eris who is now blind and has various health problems benefits greatly when I am talking to her quietly and stroking her during blood tests and other vet checks.

I adore working with senior and super senior cats. Giving them comfort as they slow down is an amazing gift. Watching as they can move their limbs more easily and clean themselves after removing tricky knots and mats makes my heart sing. It’s possibly my favourite part of the work I do and getting feedback from guardians that their senior cat is acting like a kitten again, playing and coming for fusses when they had been keeping to themselves more previously.

Nutritional knowledge

Let’s dish about a topic that’s as vital as it is often overlooked in the world of dog grooming: pet nutrition! Yep, you heard that right—what goes into Fido’s food bowl can have a big impact on their coat, skin, and overall well-being. So, grab a treat (for you and your furry friend) and let’s dig into why dog groomers should be savvy about what’s on the menu.

First things first, why does pet nutrition even matter? Well, think of your pup’s body like a fancy car—it needs the right fuel to run smoothly and look sleek. A balanced diet packed with all the essential nutrients—think protein, fats, vitamins, and minerals—keeps your furry friend’s coat shiny, skin healthy, and energy levels up. Plus, it can help prevent pesky problems like dry, flaky skin or excessive shedding. So, when it comes to keeping your pooch looking and feeling their best, nutrition is key!

But here’s the thing: not all dog foods are created equal. With so many options lining the pet food aisle—from kibble and canned food to raw diets and grain-

free options—it can be overwhelming to know what’s best for your furry friend. That’s where a nutrition-savvy dog groomer comes in! These grooming gurus aren’t just about fluffing up Fido’s fur—they’re also clued in on the ins and outs of pet nutrition, helping pet parents make informed choices about what to feed their four-legged pals.

So, what exactly should dog groomers know about pet nutrition? Well, for starters, understanding the basics of canine dietary needs is key. Dogs are omnivores, which means they thrive on a balanced diet that includes a mix of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Protein is especially important for building strong muscles

NUTRITION

and supporting a healthy coat, while fats provide energy and help maintain skin and coat health.

But it’s not just about what’s in the food—it’s also about what’s not. Groomers should be aware of common allergens and ingredients that can cause sensitivities in dogs, like grains, artificial additives, and certain proteins. By steering pet parents away from potentially problematic ingredients and towards high-quality, whole-food options, groomers can help promote better digestion, fewer skin issues, and a happier, healthier pup.

And let’s not forget about hydration! Just like us humans, dogs need plenty of water to stay hydrated and healthy. Groomers can remind pet parents to keep those water bowls filled up and encourage them to choose moisture-rich foods like wet food or fresh fruits and veggies to help keep their furry friends hydrated from the inside out.

But here’s the real kicker: being a nutrition ninja isn’t just about doling out diet advice—it’s about building trust and forming lasting relationships with pet parents. By taking the time to educate themselves about pet nutrition and offering guidance based on their expertise, groomers can become invaluable resources for pet owners looking to give their furry friends the best possible care.

Picture this: a pup prancing out of the salon with a silky-smooth coat, a wagging tail, and a spring in their step. That’s the magic of a groomer who knows their way around pet nutrition. By recommending the right foods and supplements tailored to each furry friend’s unique needs, groomers can help unlock their full potential, from the tip of their nose to the end of their tail. It’s not just about looking good—it’s about feeling pawsitively fabulous from the inside out!

So, whether they’re fluffing up Fido’s fur or dishing out diet tips, dog groomers who know their stuff about pet nutrition are the real MVPs of the pet care world. They’re like the ultimate pet wellness warriors, helping to keep our furry friends looking and feeling their absolute best. So here’s to all the grooming gurus out there—may your shears be sharp, your brushes be bristly, and your nutrition knowledge be next-level awesome!

Australian dog grooming

Dog grooming is more than just a service; it’s an art form that requires skill, patience, and a deep understanding of canine behaviour. In countries like Australia, where dogs are cherished members of the family, the grooming industry thrives with innovation and expertise. Let’s delve into the intricacies of Australia’s dog grooming scene and explore what UK groomers can learn from their Down Under counterparts.

Australia’s dog grooming industry stands out for several reasons. Firstly, the country’s climate plays a significant role. With its diverse landscapes ranging from tropical rainforests to arid deserts, Australia experiences varied weather conditions that directly impact canine coat types. Australian groomers are adept at handling everything from thick double-coated breeds to delicate, low-shedding varieties, thanks to their extensive knowledge of coat care techniques tailored to different climates.

Moreover, Australians have a unique approach to pet ownership. Dogs are often regarded as integral members of the family, leading to a higher demand for grooming services that prioritise both aesthetic appeal and the dog’s well-being. This cultural emphasis on holistic pet care has spurred innovation in grooming methods and products, driving the industry forward.

While the UK has its own thriving dog grooming industry, there are valuable lessons UK groomers can learn from their Australian counterparts:

Australia’s diverse climate and geography have fostered a culture of adaptability among groomers. UK groomers can benefit from expanding their knowledge to accommodate a wide range of coat types and breeds, ensuring they can meet the needs of every client.

Continuous learning is essential in the ever-evolving field of dog grooming. Australian groomers invest time and resources in staying updated on the latest techniques, products, and industry trends. UK groomers should follow suit by attending workshops, seminars, and

certification programs to hone their skills and offer top-notch services to their clients.

Australian groomers understand that grooming goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about promoting the overall health and well-being of the dog. UK groomers can enhance their services by incorporating holistic approaches such as using natural, gentle products, providing stress-free grooming experiences, and offering nutritional advice to clients.

The Australian dog grooming industry thrives on innovation, with groomers constantly seeking new solutions to meet the evolving needs of pet owners. UK groomers should adopt a similar mindset of innovation and adaptability, exploring new grooming techniques, tools, and technologies to enhance their services and stay ahead of the curve.

Australian groomers excel in building strong relationships with their clients, earning their trust through exceptional service and personalised care. UK groomers can elevate their business by focusing on customer satisfaction, listening to their clients’ needs, and providing tailored grooming experiences that exceed expectations.

In today’s competitive dog grooming industry, continuous learning is not just beneficial—it’s essential for success. By staying informed about industry trends, best practices, and advancements in grooming techniques, groomers can elevate their skills, expand their clientele, and build a reputable business.

Learning from other grooming communities, such as Australia’s, offers valuable insights and fresh perspectives that can inspire innovation and improvement. Whether it’s discovering new grooming methods, exploring innovative products, or adopting holistic approaches to pet care, every lesson learned contributes to the groomer’s expertise and enhances the quality of service they provide.

Moreover, investing in education demonstrates a commitment to professionalism and excellence, instilling confidence in clients and setting the groomer apart as a trusted expert in their field. In an industry where trust and reputation are paramount, continuous learning is not just a choice—it’s a competitive advantage.

In conclusion, the Australian dog grooming industry serves as a beacon

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD

of excellence and innovation, offering valuable lessons for groomers worldwide, including those in the UK. By embracing diversity, prioritising education, focusing on holistic care, fostering innovation, and building strong client relationships,

UK groomers can elevate their skills and set new standards of excellence in the grooming profession. As the saying goes, the pursuit of knowledge is never-ending, and in the world of dog grooming, it’s the key to success.
