A 10-year-old’s mission to educate the world - Kirsty’s Microchipping Story by Microchip Central.

“O

ver the half-term break, I went to stay with my grandmother in her cosy home, and little did I know, we were about to embark on an unforgettable adventure. As I unpacked my things, there was Josh, a familiar face peeking out from my bag – my cuddly cheetah teddy my mother had gifted me. Josh accompanied me everywhere, filling each day with fun and laughter.

“But, while we were happy to have Josh with us, I started to worry: What if he wanders off while we’re out having fun? The idea of losing Josh scared me a lot, so I tried to find a way to keep him safe. At first, we tried a collar and leash, but Josh didn’t like them. So, my grandma and I went to lots of charity shops until we found a soft harness that Josh really liked.

“As a child who loves animals, I was super excited to hear about the new law saying all cats had to get microchipped. I knew I had to make sure Josh was safe. While chatting with my friends on video, I had an awesome idea – Josh needed a microchip, like, right now. I begged my grandma to help, and after some talking, she said yes. I made sure to tell Josh that it wouldn’t hurt and that he’d come back to me if he ever got lost.

“Then, I got ready for the job. I held him tight while my grandma put in the microchip. Josh stayed calm the whole time, not knowing a little chip was keeping him safe. He didn’t move, it didn’t hurt him at all. He was now protected forever. After the chip was in, I insisted we register Josh right away.

“I called Microchip Central, and they were super nice and helpful. Microchipping Josh wasn’t just about following the rules; it was about keeping him safe. Now, when we go on adventures or just chill at home, I feel better knowing Josh has a secret helper if he ever gets lost. With Josh all microchipped and registered, our friendship feels even stronger, and I’m so happy knowing my favourite cheetah is

safe with me, forever.”

Kirsty’s story has filled us with warmth. Microchip Central deeply appreciates her proactive approach to ensuring Josh’s safety by microchipping and registering him. Kirsty’s commitment to safeguarding her beloved companion demonstrates exemplary responsibility and care at just the young age of 10.

We are delighted to have assisted Kirsty and Josh in this endeavour by providing the necessary registration and complimentary keeper items to further ensure Josh’s security. Kirsty’s dedication to following the law and prioritising Josh’s well-being is commendable, and we hope their bond continues to flourish knowing that Josh is protected for life.

Slobber & Chops

Brighton dog groomer Ben Thorpe was delighted to triumph at Crufts this year with Gordon Setter Finlay - and the win was made all the more special as his work organised a special trip to be right by his side.

Slobber & Chops staff Fran Ford, Emily Ponsonby-Way and Lucy Blundell, and the firm’s owner Sally Keegan, set off in the early hours of the morning to be ringside when Ben and Finlay took to the showring at the NEC in Birmingham earlier this month.

And with other staff members, Liam Beauchamp Jones and Cameron Simpson cheering on from back in Brighton Ben and Finlay couldn’t have been more supported by the friendly team.

Respected in the grooming world, Ben ensured that Finlay was looking amazing before his big event, and the hard work paid off because he placed first of 15 Gordon setters in his category.

Ben, who shares news about grooming and his dog showing on Instagram at @thorpe.1989, said: “I am absolutely ecstatic. It was really a dream come true to show at Crufts but to win 1st out of 15 is a real honour.

“I first met Finlay through very dear friends of mine getting him as a puppy and bringing them to me for his first

puppy groom.

“I could see from the moment I saw him he was special in his breed and our bond was instant. I took my dog Arnold to ring-craft training so invited them to come along too with Finlay.

“I handled him a few times there and we just hit it off. Now two years later a junior warrant and winning over 20 championship shows, we are here winning his class in postgraduate at Crufts 2024. After winning his junior class last year I never thought we would do it for a second time.

“The prep work before was three hours of hand stripping to get his coat in top condition. I then bathed and conditioned him in Artero ‘Detox’ to get him clean. I added a new Artero product called ‘Cubic’ to his feathers and dried it in to help with volume. Once he was dry I did his styling and then it was off to Birmingham.

“It was amazing to have such good friends ringside for support. They all went wild when it was announced that we had won. It made the whole experience so special to have the team there.”

Slobber and Chops is based in St James’ Street Brighton, and owner Sally prides herself on the strong team ethic and fun working environment at the busy salon and shop.

She said: “Ensuring that our team felt connected and valued has always been my top priority. This trip presented the perfect opportunity to strengthen our bonds, enjoy each other’s company, and indulge in our shared passion for dogs. With some team members having only joined us recently, and myself being relatively new to the team, I believed this experience would foster a deeper sense of camaraderie among us.

“Moreover, it was a fantastic chance to show our support for Ben, our esteemed Head Dog Groomer and Director of Operations.

“The moment the judge announced Ben and Finlay as the winners was simply exhilarating.

“We held our breath as the judge carefully scrutinised each dog in the ring. When her hand pointed towards Ben and Finlay, indicating their triumph, we couldn’t contain our joy.

“The eruption of cheers and applause filled the arena as we celebrated this remarkable achievement. Witnessing the sheer delight on Finlay’s owners’ faces,

Maggie and Miranda, added to the magic of the moment.

“It was an emotionally charged experience for all of us, and we immediately rushed to Ben to share in the jubilation, smothering him in hugs and capturing the victorious moment in photographs.”

Sally took the Brighton business in February this year and has rebranded the salon Slobber & Chops, a nod to her own dog whose nickname is Slobber Chops.

The popular salon, which was formerly known as Bone Idol is enjoying a complete refit, but will still stock the popular dog food range, and add to the offer with new lines and dog products created by local artists and makers.

Sally added: “At Slobber & Chops, our team shares a special bond that goes beyond just work.

“Our mutual love for dogs serves as a

strong foundation for everything we do. We pride ourselves on the unwavering support we offer one another, whether it’s lending a helping hand during grooming sessions, providing valuable insights, or simply sharing a laugh over the unique personalities of our furry clients.

“The atmosphere in our salon is always filled with laughter, reflecting the genuine care and affection we have for each other. We consider ourselves incredibly fortunate to have such a compassionate team at Slobber & Chops.”

To celebrate his win, Finlay, who is owned by Maggie Morgan and Miranda Ellis enjoyed a fuss and his very own steak dinner. You can follow Finlay’s antics on Instagram by visiting @ caradilis_skyrocket

Canine and dine

Pet parents are willing to spend a considerable amount on treating their beloved pets, new research finds, with the favourite human treats of pets revealed as kale, cheese, and broccoli.

One in ten pet owners spend up to £5,244 a year (over 15% of their income) on pet food and treats, showing that despite the increasing cost of living, owners still put their furry friends first and spend what they can to ensure they enjoy a varied and tasty diet.

The research, carried out by pet-sitting platform TrustedHousesitters shows that, on average, pet owners across the UK spend £2,733 a year on food and treats for their beloved pets.

Almost a quarter (23%) of pet owners feed their pets human food as a treat every day. Top treats of choice include chicken and cheese (48% each), with the healthier choices of broccoli, carrots and kale being the top choice for 3 in 10 (30%) owners.

A recent survey by TrustedHousesitters finds that over half of UK pet parents (58%) prefer to snuggle up on the sofa with their pooch rather than their partner,

showing that pets are the top dogs when it comes to love and attention.

Over four in five (82%) owners report feeling guilty about going out for the evening and leaving their pets behind. But now, pet owners can relax at home and have the restaurant come to them!

To help dog lovers across the country spend quality time with their pets while treating them to the best food, TrustedHousesitters has created a new, free cookbook: “Dine With Your DogTrusted Treats & Recipes.” The cookbook features recipes that are both dog and human-friendly, so owners and pooches alike can dine together with household ingredients.

The cookbook features seven easy recipes, including ‘Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes’, ‘Slobber-worthy Salmon Fish Cakes’ and ‘Sweet Pawtato Fries’.

In a recent TikTok video, TikTok star Chasity Hobbs (@through.the.lleaves) shares how to make delicious Pupcakes

that only need a few additions to make them perfect for humans.

Angela Laws, Head of Community at TrustedHousesitters, comments: “As we have such an extensive community of pets and owners at TrustedHousesitters, we understand better than anyone the amazing bond between animals and their humans. We’re finding owners want the very best for their pets, with many regularly feeding them human food as a treat. This is one reason why we decided it was time to rewrite the cookbook and create a series of useful recipes that owners and pets alike can enjoy together.”

The full range of pooch-friendly recipes can be found in the TrustedHousesitters online cookbook.

Whenever you give your dog new food, be sure to consult with your vet if you’re unsure of individual dietary requirements.

Express yourself

In the world of dog grooming, creativity is the unsung hero that transforms a routine trim into a masterpiece. One of the cornerstones of any dog grooming salon is the imaginative touch that sets exceptional groomers apart. From trendy trims to Asian-inspired styles, embracing creativity isn’t just an option, it’s a necessity!

Every pup that walks through the door of a grooming salon is unique. From a Golden Retriever to a Schnauzer, each breed presents its own set of pros and cons when being groomed. Creativity lies in recognising the potential within each breed and tailoring grooming techniques as such.

Just as no two dogs are alike, no two grooming sessions should be identical. Creativity allows groomers to tailor their approach to suit the personality of each furry client.

From a neat little colour to using fur to create a whole new pattern, a signature style will allow any groomer to express their creativity.

Creativity isn’t just about following trends though, it’s about sharing them. Innovative groomers have the power to influence popular styles and inspire fellow professionals.

CREATIVE DOG GROOMING

By pushing the boundaries of traditional grooming techniques and experimenting with new tools and products, groomers have the freedom to be creative in an industry that praises them for it!

Beyond the aesthetic appeal, creative grooming fosters a deep connection between groomer, dog, and owner. When a groomer goes above and beyond to deliver a truly personalised experience, it creates a lasting impression that can create return clientele for years to come.

This bond not only ensures client loyalty but also leads to invaluable wordof-mouth referrals which can lead to more revenue.

Creativity can also be a powerful problem-solving tool. From matted fur to a client who simply won’t sit still, groomers often encounter challenges that require innovative solutions.

Thinking outside the box allows you, as a groomer, to overcome obstacles and deliver some really cool results, earning a name around town for yourself as the go-to dog groomer.

In today’s competitive grooming industry, standing out is essential for success. Creativity is the secret ingredient that elevates a grooming business from good to great, and sharing it on social

media will do nothing but increase your notability.

By offering unique services, developing signature styles, and showcasing your artistic talents on social media platforms, you can carve out a niche and attract a loyal following of discerning clients.

The more creative you are, the more you’ll want to be creative in your work. Dog grooming is one of the perfect jobs for that! For groomers who are truly passionate about their craft, the opportunity to unleash their creativity is what drives them forward.

Whether it’s experimenting with new grooming techniques, attending workshops and competitions, or collaborating with other local dog groomers, nurturing creativity keeps you motivated and ensures that every grooming session is infused with joy and enthusiasm.

Groomers who are open to expanding their skill set and exploring new ideas are better equipped to adapt to social media’s changing trends and evolving client preferences.

Whether it’s attending seminars, enrolling in online courses, or seeking mentorship from industry veterans, investing in education is key to unlocking your creative potential as a groomer!

Creativity flourishes in a supportive community where ideas are shared, and collaboration is encouraged. Groomers who actively engage with others in the industry can benefit from a wealth of collective knowledge and inspiration.

By exchanging tips, techniques, and success stories, you can not only elevate your skills but also contribute to the growth and advancement of the

16

grooming profession as a whole.

Creativity knows no bounds, and neither should you! Embracing diversity and inclusivity allows groomers to cater to a wide range of clients, regardless of the breed of dog they have. The key thing here is to know that you shouldn’t limit yourself.

Whether it’s learning specialised grooming techniques for different breeds or accommodating the needs of dogs with disabilities or medical conditions, it’s a win-win situation for you as a groomer!

Now, creativity is great and all, but don’t ever let it get in the way of your carefulness and wellbeing priority of the animals. Groomers who prioritise gentle handling, safe grooming practices, and the use of high-quality products contribute to the overall health and happiness of their furry clients.

By staying informed about the latest advancements in pet care, you’ll find that you not only enhance the physical appearance of your clientele’s dogs but also promote their overall happiness, ensuring that each grooming session is a positive experience for everyone involved.

Creativity can also be channelled into sustainable and eco-friendly grooming practices, so don’t hold back. From using biodegradable shampoos and grooming products to implementing water-saving techniques, groomers truly do have the power to make a positive impact on the planet. There’s no deed too small when it comes to being eco-friendly, after all!

Creativity reigns supreme in this fantastic canine world we live in. It has so many positive impacts on business, it’s

hard to not get involved.

By embracing creativity as a guiding principle, you can elevate your grooms and long-lasting connections. Overall, it’s really important to allow your creativity to shine, whilst also maintaining a care-filled environment where the wellbeing of the animals is prioritised. Let your grooming capabilities run wild and encourage creativity to become your second best friend, after dogs of course!

Goldie’s Boutique

Sarah Goldsborough is a professional groomer and owns Goldie’s Boutique & Spa and Goldie’s Academy based in South Brent in Devon. She has been grooming for almost 20 years and owned two other grooming salons as well as being mobile for a while. Liv and Eliza are also apprentices studying for their level 2 in dog grooming. Today, she tells us a little about her grooming business.

Isigned the lease to my salon at the very start of the lockdown.

Everyone thought I was crazy, but I had lots of ideas and knew I could make it work. I gave myself a two-year plan, and with lockdown hitting, I utilised the time wisely to expand my knowledge.

There were so many online courses available because of lockdown, as well as seminars and podcasts. I worked hard to gain my teaching certificate which would enable me to teach others what I am so passionate about.

I have always worked in a busy town so to up sticks and go more rural was like a breath of fresh air. The dogs seem so much happier and more relaxed, and the owners aren’t so demanding. I put it down to the fact that the dogs are always well-exercised.

I see a lot more working breeds

now but still have a plentiful supply of doodles, which I love. There are quite a few holiday homes in the area, so I get a lot of customers from all over the country.

My unique selling point is my knowledge and the fact that I also groom cats. I offer ‘cat-only’ days at the salon which are often busy.

I trained with Lesley Garett and Kelly Henley at Canine Design in Shepton Mallet and gained my City & Guilds Level 3. I then had my 4th son and went on to gain my City & Guilds Diploma in Dog Grooming with Eve Summers.

At the end of lockdown, we became an approved training centre with iPet Network. I was so excited as they were about to launch the first regulated cat grooming qualification in the UK which I couldn’t wait to get my teeth stuck into.

I have groomed cats since the age of 16, having worked as a veterinary nurse. I

think the key to successful cat grooming is the handling skills which I was able to gain whilst working at the vet. I have also studied the NCGI cat grooming syllabus.

Just before I launched my academy, I was approached by Bill Betts from Pet Passion to Profit and was asked to do a live chat on Facebook, all about cat grooming which really helped to highlight the importance of cat grooming and made people aware that there are qualifications available.

Bill has not only been a great help to me but has also mentored a few of my students who have gone on to create very successful cat grooming businesses all over the country.

There are so many dog groomers out there but when you diversify you can market your services to lots of different people which means your customer base is so much more diverse.

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH

Jumping onto a microchipping course would be beneficial with the new compulsory chipping law coming into effect this year. You could offer cut-price microchipping which, in turn, could lead to teeth cleaning, cat grooming and dog grooming.

Once qualified, don’t go stale, continuing professional development is a great way to keep you engaged, enhance your knowledge and keep you current in an ever-changing industry.

I am a huge advocate for the Groomers Spotlight which champions and promotes groomers who have worked hard to achieve their full qualifications, in the hope that one day the industry will become regulated.

I would like to see the cat grooming industry in the UK become regulated and would like to see this also added to the Groomers Spotlight as more and more students are gaining their cat grooming qualification.

Much attention in the Grooming Industry is directed towards dogs. Grooming techniques, products, discussions, seminars and competitions largely revolve around diverse breeds and styles.

Cats come in many varieties, each with their own unique needs and characteristics which warrant a groomer. The cat grooming industry is a niche market which is becoming more highlighted in the public and in the grooming industry.

I feel honoured this year to have been chosen as a judge, alongside Christine Anderton in the Cat Grooming Competition UK, organised by Heidi Anderton.

I would say to anybody starting or thinking of starting out in the grooming industry to get your qualifications and keep growing with the industry. Learn everything there is to know and be the best you can be to give you a secure business and to give your clients the best care. You can be confident with your knowledge and your customers will keep coming back.

I am so proud of my students and what they have achieved. I have made some very good friends and never want them to leave. They know I am always here, should they need me.

Retail Opportunities

Want to invest in the latest tricks of the trade when it comes to pet grooming and retail?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you! Image by Peter Plashkin on Unsplash.

Radiant retail

If you’re running a dog grooming salon, you aren’t simply giving a dog a new look, you’re also able to retail yourself in exciting new ways! With the pet industry growing more than ever, here’s what we know about retail within dog grooming in 2024.

Why retail?

So here’s the first question, why bother retailing at all? Well, retailing products can enhance your customer experience and build loyalty for a start! It’s also a fantastic way to provide solutions to your clients’ grooming dilemmas, while also making their lives easier.

Retailing products in a dog grooming salon isn’t just about selling stuff; it’s about enhancing the overall customer experience and building a thriving business that your clients will love.

Selling products allows dog groomers to provide comprehensive solutions to their clients’ grooming needs. By offering high-quality grooming tools, skincare remedies and treats, groomers can encourage pet parents to maintain their furry friends’ health at home! The added convenience and value create a positive customer experience that fosters loyalty and return clientele.

RETAIL OPPORTUNITIES

RETAIL OPPORTUNITIES

Retail sales offer an additional revenue stream for dog grooming businesses. By diversifying income sources by selling products, groomers can use this to their advantage to make a profit, year-round. It never hurts to invest in your own business, making retailing a financially savvy decision for business owners.

Retailing products can differentiate a dog grooming salon from its competitors. By curating a selection of premium, speciality, or locally sourced products, groomers can carve out a unique niche and attract the perfect list of clientele.

Whether it’s offering organic grooming products, hosting DIY grooming workshops, or collaborating with pet influencers, retailing in-house allows groomers to showcase their expertise and passion for pet care in innovative ways.

Retailing isn’t just about selling products, however. It’s about building relationships with clients. By offering personalised recommendations, hosting educational events, and rewarding loyalty, groomers can build a sense of trust and connection with their customers.

As dog owners become more invested in your brand, they’re more likely to become regular patrons who spread the word to friends and family.

The pet industry, as we all know, is constantly evolving, with new trends and innovations emerging regularly.

Retailing products allows dog groomers to stay ahead of the curve. Whether it’s incorporating new types of products, bringing in eco-friendly grooming supplies, or even the latest stock from Christies Direct, groomers who embrace retail have the flexibility to meet the diverse needs of modern pet parents.

Retailing products in a dog grooming salon isn’t just a savvy business strategy, it’s a way to elevate the customer experience, drive revenue growth, and establish a unique brand identity in a competitive market.

By offering top-notch products, personalised service, and innovative solutions, groomers can really bring the best of the best into their business!

This month has been all about Crufts, and what a whirlwind that always is! It always takes a little while to get over the sights and sounds of a successful Crufts as I’m sure many of you will know, but it was amazing to spend time with so many people who are so committed to their dogs and high welfare standards. By Rachel Bean.

As well as visiting our friends at raw food manufacturers Paleo Ridge, who sponsor my dogs Chilli and Wisp and the amazing Sarah and Fern at iPET Network, it was wonderful to spend time with the excellent folks from Wooflinks.

Wooflinks is a national directory for everything dog which I am proud to be an ambassador for, its listings are wellresearched and it’s fast becoming a onestop shop for everything that is good in the world of dogs and dog care. If you haven’t checked it out already in terms of your grooming business you definitely should!

If we spoke at Crufts it was wonderful to meet you too! All of the team on our Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour and Training stand had a fabulous time. March kicked off with our local Petworking session in Saddleworth which is close to where I live. I really

recommend starting something like this in your area, as the insights and friendships that you make are next level.

Working for yourself can be quite isolating, and being surrounded by like-minded business owners who all love their animals is wonderful. The Saddleworth event is something that we look forward to every time, and it’s at a pub too which is always a bonus!

Back to the day job, and I was out and about with my Vet on Set business, which monitors animal welfare on TV and film sets. A first for me on a visit to Blackpool to work with a seagull, who was a total pro! This bird knew how to act, and also how to snatch chips, taking on his acting role with gusto. I’m not allowed to say what the scenes were for, but if you spot a seagull on TV sometime soon, there’s a good chance it was him.

International Women’s Day was also a time to reflect, and for me, it was a

chance to think about all the brilliant women that I get to work with, both in this country and on my travels around the world. Strong women are at the forefront of animal welfare, and long may that continue because the animals need us.

So... As it is now official spring, for

this month’s tips we are going to look at water safety. You may live in a coastal area, by a canal or lake, or even just have a garden paddling pool, but as the weather gets warmer it’s good to know what to look out for with your dogs, and what to do if something goes wrong.

Water intoxication

Water intoxication is commonly seen in dogs who love to play in water, and have lots of access to deeper water throughout the day which they will absorb and drink. As well as causing serious harm to your dog’s vital organs, too much water can also completely flush out vital minerals from their system, including sodium.

Signs of water intoxication to look out for include lethargy, a swollen stomach, nausea and vomiting.

If you suspect that your dog is suffering from water intoxication get them to a vet urgently as they will need emergency treatment. Water is vital for life, but it can also be a killer.

Swimming

Many dogs love to swim, but keep an eye on your dog even if they seem excited to enter the water. If your dog is older or tired they may misjudge their abilities and get themselves into trouble.

If your dog is at risk of enthusiastically jumping into hazardous or unsafe areas make sure that you keep your pet on a lead.

Drowning

If you find your dog unresponsive in or near water is it very important not to panic. Set the wheels in motion to get to the vet as soon as possible and follow the advice below. If you haven’t taken a canine first aid course yet, I recommend that you do that.

The dogs that are most vulnerable in the water are puppies, dogs with short muzzles and dogs with wide chests, if you have a dog like this in your care take extra caution anyway.

The first step when you find an unresponsive dog is to clear their airway of water. If you have a small dog you can do this by carefully holding them upside down.

If you have a large dog they can be laid on their side with the upper body raised to drain the fluids.

It is then important to check for a pulse, if you have someone with you get them to relay the information to the vet over the phone. If your dog is not breathing you can start CPR by 30 chest compressions, then two breaths. Cover their nose with your mouth and exhale

until you see the pet’s chest rise. Get the dog to the vet as soon as you can.

Sand

If you are near water you may be close to the beach or a lake with sand around it, and sand can cause a hazard for your dog. If a dog eats sand and ingests too much this can lead to an intestinal blockage. Keep an eye out for this and keep your dog on a lead if necessary, but if your dog has already eaten the sand seek veterinary attention immediately.

Grooming shorthaired cats

It is expected as a cat-only groomer that all my clients have long-haired cats and people are often surprised to find this is often not the case.

Ihave lots of short-haired cats that I see regularly and who really benefit from a grooming routine. I always remind people that it isn’t the length of the fur, it’s the density as well as the age and health of the cat in question that makes the difference in a cat’s rooming needs.

There are a lot of breeds of shorthaired cats that need a good groom as they have a very thick or double coat. British short hairs are a great example of this with their super plush fur. Especially at this time of year when they are doing their spring coat shed. Their thicker winter fur is being lost and replaced by the thinner summer coat so this is the bigger of the two annual sheds (the other being late autumn). The thick fur can get caught in the newer thinner fur and cause fur balls and knots. I certainly notice it with my four short-haired moggy cats!

Other breeds to keep an eye on are exotic short-haired cats which are a cross between British shorthair and Persians. Persians are known for their long fluffy fur and when you combine that with the dense plush BSH you get a cat that is definitely going to need regular brushing! Russian Blues are similar as they also have that very plush fur. Another plush cat that can be short or long-haired is the Scottish Fold who is going to need help with grooming. They also have a genetic mutation which affects their cartilage and bone (hence the folded ears) and has welfare and health implications that can cause degenerative joint disease at an early age. This can affect their ability to groom themselves and cause pain when handling so always bear this in mind when grooming Scottish Folds.

Health and age also affect the grooming needs of short-haired cats.

Arthritis is common in older cats, especially around the back legs. This can affect their mobility and their ability to groom themselves in those crazy yoga poses they are so well known for. Joint pain can make them less flexible and will also decrease their motivation to keep looking after their fur as well so older cats are likely to need some extra help from us humans. What I often see is that cats have a side they favour to lie on and the opposite side can become quite knotty as it gets missed by the cat and their guardian when they are always lying on it.

Some health conditions common in cats can cause changes in their fur and grooming needs too. Kidney disease, diabetes and hyperthyroidism can all cause fur changes that cause knots and mats to form more readily. Fur can become both greasy and dry and their water intake needs change in all three of

and

these diseases. Tooth and dental pain is also an issue for cats. Pain in and around the mouth can again affect how much your cat grooms themselves and can happen at any age. Obesity is another I see in feline clients. Being overweight again affects mobility and the cat cannot reach all areas of the body to effectively groom themselves and so develop mats and ski problems as well.

Don’t forget of course that shorthaired cats also need their claws checked and their ears and eyes cleaned too. Cats with fur of any length can get ingrown claws where the claw grows around in a circle back into the paw pad. Mobility, being indoor only and age can have a great effect on this and it isn’t linked to fur length at all. The same with keeping a cat’s ears clean. I find cats with larger paws can have dirtier ears but it really varies. Hairless or sparser-haired cats like Sphyinx and Lykoi are very greasy and always have the grubbiest ears I see! You get such a sense of satisfaction giving them all good clear out I tell you.

Short-haired cats are also just as prone to skin conditions, grease and fleas as long-haired cats and bathing can help with these. I do not bathe cats unless it is necessary and they have to pass a test with the sound and feel of the drier before I put them near water too. If I think it will help their skin or fur though I will see if the cat will let me try. Also, cats are known for being curious creatures and any cat can climb under, into, or through something daft or have something spilt on them. How many times have you seen cats sitting under cars and vans or in the soil under bushes watching the world go by? It’s a good job they have nine lives…

The one thing I don’t do for shorthaired cats unless they are matted and it is a welfare issue is giving them a lion cut. It doesn’t serve a purpose in the UK for the cat and I don’t see cats as toys that need to look a certain way to please their human. It’s a personal choice but I am firm with my clients about it and it is worth considering your stance on this yourself and making an informed choice.

I love working with so many shorthaired cats and I have to say I adore a moggy. I often surprise clients when I say their short-haired cat could also do with a good groom and then show them how much I can brush out in just a couple of minutes!

Crufts

Round of a-paws for Crufts 2024 winners! Over four days, from 7 – 10 March, more than 24,000 dogs of all shapes and sizes took over the NEC Birmingham for the world’s greatest celebration of dogs, Crufts!

Run by The Kennel Club, Crufts saw hundreds of different competitions take place on the famous green carpetwith something for every dog and owner.

Every dog has their day at Crufts, and we have highlighted a few four-legged competitors that took home particularly special titles this year.

The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award

Heroic search and rescue dog, Vesper, a four-year-old Belgian Malinois was announced as the winner of the prestigious Kennel Club Hero Dog Award at Crufts.

Niamh Darcy, a dog handler from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, took a chance on Vesper in 2020 when she was 18 months old. After a 48-hour trial under arduous selection conditions, Vesper performed flawlessly and their bond as a team was solid. In 2023, Niamh and Vesper were part of the chosen UK International Search and Rescue Team and were deployed by the Government to aid in the rescue mission following the horrific earthquakes in both Turkey and Morocco, where they worked tirelessly to locate survivors.

Vesper was one of four hero dog finalists shortlisted and was announced as winner of the nation’s public vote on the final day of Crufts. Proud Niamh and Vesper were presented with a cheque for £5,000 from The Kennel Club Charitable Trust for a dog charity of their choice.

Crufts is calling for the public to nominate their unsung canine heroes for The Kennel Club Hero Dog Award 2025. Nominations can be made online at: crufts.org.uk/herodogaward.

Scruffts

Diesel, a 13-year-old Airedale Terrier/ Labrador cross owned by Claire Whitehead from Barlborough, Derbyshire, won the Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year title. Claire

describes Diesel as a self-taught epilepsy detection dog, having learnt to bark when Claire’s friend, who has epilepsy, has a seizure and he will also bring her a blanket to protect her.

Four finalists were judged by Crufts TV presenter Radzi Chinyanganya, alongside TV personality Faye Winter, and dog judge Paul Rawlings, who were looking for qualities such as health, good character and temperament.

The Scruffts Family Crossbreed of the Year competition caters exclusively for crossbreed dogs. Readers wishing to enter one of the heats taking place in 2024 can find out more on the Crufts website: crufts.org.uk/scruffts

The coveted Best in Show!

After four action-packed days, and 19,000 dogs hoping to get their paws

on the famous trophy, a new Crufts Best in Show winner was crowned. Viking, a three-year-old Australian Shepherd, and his owner, Melanie Raymond, were awarded the most prestigious title in the canine calendar in front of a packed Resorts World Arena and live on Channel 4.

Melanie and Viking are from Solihull, Birmingham, and Melanie said of their win: “Pinch me! This is everyone’s dream. Crufts is the one we all want to win!”

The Reserve Best in Show was won by the Jack Russell Terrier, Zen, co-owned by Hiroshi Tsuyuki and Kao Miichi, from Japan.

Crufts will be returning in 2025 from 6 – 9 March, and for more information and results from the 2024 show visit crufts.org.uk.

Canadian dog grooming

This issue, we’re taking a little look at Canadian dog grooming, how it compares to grooming in the UK and how different takes on styling can have an international impact.

Canada is one of the largest countries on the planet, with many different places to span many different grooming styles. With that comes a variety of influences that create a unique style all across the country, from work-inspired grooms to colourful and creative ones!

Firstly, let’s talk about regulations. Every country has their own standards. In Canada, some different areas have different licensing requirements, whereas in the UK, groomers might want to undergo specific training from organisations like the Pet Industry Federation.

The types of grooming services offered by groomers could vary massively all across this North American landscape,

from urban areas to cityscapes. Similarly to the UK, if you travel far enough, you’ll notice huge differences between certain areas!

This leads to pet owners and their individual preferences. When it comes to pet grooming, surroundings can hugely influence a dog’s groom. During the harsh weather in Canada, you may find that there are a lot of breeds with longer coats and grooming styles.

Clothing also plays a huge part! It’s not uncommon to see a dog wearing a full outfit of a coat and shoes during the Winter.

Local traditions and industry norms also play a part, as with any country with a dog grooming regulation standard. Subtle differences may be noticed within

the trade, but that doesn’t stop any groomer from travelling and sharing their ideas with the world, even simply via social media!

The UK and Canada both practice high standards of animals’ well-being and adhere to strict codes of conduct while giving a dog the best groom of its’ life! Subtle differences can be noticed here, but overall, as long as the dog leaves the salon smiling and happy then you can’t go wrong!

One of the key things that I want you, dear reader, to take away is that there may be some general differences in the way that countries operate their grooming businesses, but this is all a part of sharing in the modern world of 2024! Shaping the grooming experience is

GROOMERS AROUND THE WORLD

vital in each and every way, and cultural differences should be celebrated, even when it comes to grooming our furry pals!

This leads to our next point. Canada is a massively multi-cultural place, from Vancouver all the way through to Toronto. Because of this, a diverse skillset is required in your grooming salon, as you never know who your next furry client may be! Being adaptable to every personality, coat type and skincare routine is a must for any dog groomer.

Mobile dog grooming also has a rather large spot in the Canadian dog grooming scene. There are frequent times when getting out of the house isn’t the easiest option, and a mobile groomer paying you a visit might not be the worst thing! Especially in those colder Winter months. Brr! As Brits, we’re no strangers to rain and cloudy days, but sometimes you can look outside and the feeling of venturing out makes you wonder why you even got out of bed!

Climate adaptability is something that you, as dog groomers, should have tucked in the back of your mind and how you can apply it to your grooming business.

Building rapport is something else that we’re all appreciative on within this booming pet industry. Whether you’re in small-town England, or a rural place in Canada, a neighbourly presence within your community never goes amiss. Word of mouth is extremely powerful, after all!

Education is something else that’s no stranger to the worldwide dog groomer. There are a wide variety of courses and training schools for upcoming dog groomers to look into, so be sure to scan online if you’re looking for some inspiration on how you can get a grasp on the latest trends from another country.

It’s important to be a part of this international community of dog groomers and share ideas with each other whenever you get the chance. From sharing on social media to traversing the globe to attend events, we want to know all there is to know about dog grooming.

Studying practices of other countries, seeing trends and putting them into action will do nothing but emphasise your career and demonstrate to your clientele that you’re willing to be diverse with your grooms. Keep on sharing, as we can’t wait to see what you can come up with within this massively cross-continental world of dog grooming!
