A SPECTACULAR RETIREMENT HOME

restad Retirement Home is a municipal nursing of Health and Care in Copenhagen, driven by the housing association KAB. The Home is located in Ørestad Syd overlooking the scenic nature of Kalvebod, in the middle of a local area of rapid development. Ørestad Retire-

ment Home supports each resident to continue living their lives, using its resources in daily activities and believing in prolonging an independent life as long as possible.

A DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT Ă˜restad Retirement Home has taken special consideration to a dementia friendly environment with as domestic well-being factors as possible. The idea was to be able to care for themselves the best possible way, but at the same time to promote a feeling of safety and security. We have worked with colors, both inside and out, with pictograms of high visibility for the objects and rooms that are used by residents. Ă˜restad Retirement Home supports each individual resident with dementia to continue living their lives, using its resources in daily activities and believing in prolonging an independent life as long as possible.

A GOOD WORKPLACE The good workplace is from our point of view an essential prerequisite for good housing environment. The Retirement Home is the setting for a workplace of different professions. We have therefore created attractive physical environments, interior design, materials, lighting and acoustics that provide a positive and committed staff. The physical work environment is supported by both mechanical and technological aids, good lighting conditions day and night. Room and space to perform tasks and routines are optimized with minimal risk of overload, errors and accidents. All mutal rooms have kitchen facilities with dining areas, areas for relaxation and activities and access to large balconies and roof terrace where the view of Ă˜restad and Amager Common can be enjoyed.

THE COLOURS Building projects in Ă˜restaden are typically large scaled and follow already laid building plans. From the very beginning, it was clear to us, however, that we had to break down or interpret our building into sections. This was necessary in order to reach a size similar to the size of a home. It was always our main focus that we were building homes for elderly citizens and not institutions. Colours By using colours and a variety of materials, we would be able to make the transition from large to small. The project developed as it moved along and the many different materials turned into a majority of plastered surfaces in a variety of colours. The inspiration for the colour choices were the old houses in Copenhagen such as Nyboder and parts of Nyhavn with their plastered walls.The colours had, however, to be different. They had to be twisted and interpreted into the new urban environment existing in Ă˜restaden; an Ă˜restad that in many ways pushes on in great sizes, but less in colour variations.

BALCONIES Balconies The added on balconies are in a similar colour as the wall upon which they have been mounted, making the colours come alive enabling the colour to be experienced from many different close angles at the same time. The balconies have not randomly been mounted unto the facades, but they extent the functions behind the facades. Some enjoy a balcony in extension of the bedroom and can from a sick-bed still keep taps on life outside from the big balcony rather than through a bedroom window Some balconies follow the daylight and the position of the sun.

FLOORS AND FACADES Floors and facades The ground floor which is five meters tall has been kept in a dark colour or black in order to make it appear as if the building floats. The five meter tall ground floor is an authoritative demand in order to enable more street activity. The use of the black colour in the common cafĂŠ on the ground floor was selected in order to minimize the sense of height. The ground floor is arranged with commonly known functions as: a hairdresser, dentist, cafe etc. But all these features are here arranged as shops, with entrance from the street, and hereby contributing to life at eye level.

INTERIOR THEMES Interior themes included are from the 40ties, 50ties and 60ties. This is visible in the choice of furnishing using classic furniture from these time periods. Short hallways and passages each have their distinct colour and they are among other things used to create identification for the individual dweller.

We build homes for elderly people who just need a little help in their everyday life and housing for those of all ages who need special care. A mutual demand to all our care homes homes is the feeling of equity, well-being and security of the residents, and a working environment second to none for employees. HOMELINESS We build domestic care homes with plenty of natural light, natural materials, visibility to green areas and pleasant acoustics. The residents have their own private apartments, which they furnish. Each apartment is designed so it easily can be moved around for people with reduced accessibility. Residents can search socializing in the many mutual facilities that belong to the care homes. In the public spaces, they can do gymnastics, cook together or discuss the world situation over a card game. They can also go outside and enjoy the beautiful green space in the community garden areas where sensory gardens stimulates their imagination. The key words in care homes are coziness, feeling of security and wellbeing.

FUNCTIONALITY At JJW Architects, we understand that care homes not only provide a good framework for the residents. They also form the basis of a good life for the many people who help the residents. Employees must be able to grasp what is going on and quickly be of an assistance. Therefore, we always build our care homes with an optimum of work flow, so the important features are interrelated and support the daily work. At JJW Architects, we are convinced that architecture can make a difference. We believe that stimulating surroundings and natural materials can promote the healing of people. We are also convinced that architecture should be based on the needs of users to create the optimal environment for the well-being and satisfaction of employement. This is why we always cooperate with residents, employees and management to create the best care homes. In the schools, the discussion is on classrooms or more flexible areas for education; and when looking at exhibition areas and auditoriums the discussion centres on noise levels and a proper indoor environment.
