Letter from the Editor Happy new year to all our readers, advertisers and everyone who contributes to Grange Now now in its 24th year. As a busy year ends, it looks like an even busier one ahead as we go monthly with our new sister title ‘Windermere Now.’ With this in mind we are looking for someone to help on the administration and accounts side of the business on a part time basis. Please get in touch for more details if that’s of interest.

Looking ahead to 2015, we are planning to run a survey to all our readers (with a great prize on offer). We really want your feedback on the paper……. Would you like to see any changes? Throughout 2014 we have run features about health, sports and we turned the spotlight on Backbarrow, Cartmel and Flookburgh. So in 2015 we plan to run features on Lindale, Witherslack and Allithwaite. In March we’ll be running a feature on ‘Your home and garden’ while in April we take a look at the work of local artists. First off in February we are running a feature called ‘New Start!’ It’s about trying something new in 2015 - maybe a new exercise class or even a new home. What will you start in 2015? Finally, a great offer to any young people thinking of starting a business. There is a free single box advert available in each edition in 2015 for young entrepreneurs (under 30). This includes a free advert design and is awarded at our discretion to anyone under 30 who is setting up their own new business. The aim is to encourage any young entrepreneurs to go for it. Why not email us before the deadline and see if you can claim our free advert. Deadlines for the year ahead are below, the next one being 16th January. The school has also been working closely with the British Heart Foundation and for the past few years has been fortunate to acquire two vending machines located within school. This ensures healthier options are available for students partaking in lunchtime activities and after school clubs. The school recently made the decision to bring the catering provision in house from an external contractor. One of the main reasons for this decision was to ensure the best possible value for whole school community whilst maintaining a healthy menu. December and January is a time when we focus on planning and implementing New Year’s Resolutions; February through to November can see those well thought out plans delayed until the next year. Whether it’s a promise you make to yourself at the start of the year or perhaps during a mid-year break, one crucial element of anyone’s life is to make sure their finances are in order. Many people feel they are happy to take care of their own financial situation, and are indeed more than capable of doing so. Equally, there are those that feel they now require help and guidance, or perhaps the person that used to provide such guidance is no longer able to do so. Financial Planners provide varying degrees of support, at a level to suit you. Financial Advice can come at key stages in life; perhaps you are comfortable to make your own decisions most of the time but at specific times, such as retirement, you need that extra level of specialist advice. Portfolio Management, on the other hand, is the ‘complete package’. A portfolio could be made up of

one or a number of different types of investments; ISAs, Pensions, Investment Bonds, single Company Shares etc. If you no longer feel comfortable looking after your portfolio, or you have simply never given it the focus it needs it could be time to delegate the responsibility to a Financial Planner. Other benefits come from establishing a relationship with a Financial Planner; you get one central point of contact for all your investments, meaning you only need one address and one phone number, additionally you would significantly reduce the administration that goes hand in hand with modern day investments. Change in legislation can be confusing and complex, a Financial Planner would work with you to ensure that you understand how you would be affected and ensure that your portfolio is positioned accordingly.

Foodbank volunteers are now collecting for Ebola victims The group of volunteers who collect for Foodbank, the local Co-workers of Mother Teresa, are organising a special appeal for the people of Sierra Leone, through the International Aid Trust. Sierra Leone is already one of the poorest nations on earth, and now with the spread of Ebola, the struggle for survival is even greater. At the time of going to press, the latest report from the World Health Organization (15th December) said 6,856 people were now known to have died from Ebola. More than 18,000 have been infected. Between 200 and 300 people are dying every week with Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, by the far the worst hit countries. The volunteers are appealing for dried foods – pasta, rice, pulses and flour. They are also desperate for bedding, towels, disinfectants, soap, toiletries and detergents. The collection will take place at the Parish Hall, on Kents Bank Road, on Saturday 17th January 2015. Volunteers will be on hand to take your donations between 10am 2pm. Your help is very much needed and appreciated.

Children take delivery of their shoeboxes

On 8th December the Chairman of the Boxes of Hope Appeal for Cumbria, Rosemary Webster, sent us this update from Romania where she was delivering the shoeboxes. This is her first hand account:

Here we are in Romania. We have started to give out our 10,140 shoeboxes to some of the forgotten children of Europe, living in the poorest conditions imaginable. The children are so pleased to see us, and very excited to see what is in their shoeboxes. Today we are going to give out 1,000 boxes to children living on the rubbish dump at Cluj. We were just about to drive away from one distribution centre when we noticed this little girl crying because she hadn’t had a shoebox. So we dashed out of the van, opened up the trailer and found her one, and a little bag hand knitted by one of our volunteers. Her face

gradually lit up and she ran off home, one very happy little girl.

It has been an amazing week giving out your shoeboxes to children living in really desperate conditions in rural Romania. This year we visited 3 communities living by the garbage dump outside Cluj. Whole families sift through the rubbish every day, earning a pittance from the plastic and glass they collect. We walked up the hill following the horse and cart carrying the shoebox cartons, and we were shocked by the sight and smell of rubbish,

way into the distance, and little makeshift shelters in the foreground. Just as we thought it couldn’t get any worse, it did. We went down to another group living in a shanty village inches away from the railway sidings, and this time it was raining, and we were slipping and sliding in thick mud. This is where these communities spend their lives. Their lives are hard, and they have absolutely none of the basic facilities which we take for granted, but their smiles and their close family groups tell us a lot about the true values

in life. They were so excited to receive their shoeboxes. The joy on their faces when they opened their gifts, filled with love and hope, gave them a little bit of the magic of Christmas. On behalf of Boxes of Hope, Cumbria, a huge thank you to EVERYONE who has helped in any way. And to finish on a very “hopeful” note, we saw for ourselves that lots more of the children are going to school, thanks mainly to the efforts of some wonderful charity workers who have dedicated their lives to helping these communities.

New and used stamps needed

Since the death of his wife twenty years ago, Clive Flindall has been collecting new and used stamps, albums, postcards and cigarette cards to raise money for St Mary’s Hospice. Clive told Grange Now: “the hospice took very good care of my wife before she died and I wanted to do something for them. I’ve been collecting stamps for them ever since, and last year managed to raise £850.” Donations of any of the above are gratefully received, and Clive said, “they can be left at the hospice shops, the library in either Grange or Ulverston or Booths.” You can also contact Clive on 015395 33920, or you can email him at: flin@saska.co.uk.

A number of visits to various orchards in and outside of the area have been undertaken and advice sort from various individuals and organisations including South Lakes Orchard Group and the National Trust.

Cliff Dadson and Bob Copeland have 190 years between them! They were born one day apart on December 3rd and 4th, 1919, and have just celebrated their 95th birthdays together with dinner at Aynsome Manor Hotel. Both war veterans, they have lived through many significant periods in history and have seen a great many changes to everyday life.

As part of the parish neighbourhood plan residents were keen on better use of green areas within the parish. Much work in design, research and preparation has been undertaken in the last 12 months by councillors and residents to prepare parts of the parish field for the planting of various apple trees and local damsons.

Cliff served in the RAF, working with radar, whilst Bob, an army man, was posted to the desert. Cliff is a regular in Grange Now, following his recent tandem parachute jump and completing two Open University degrees since turning 90. Bob is a real local Cartmel lad, who attended Cartmel Primary school. He was also a well known postman, with an immense amount of local knowledge which is, at present, being recorded for posterity by historical experts. They both live independently, living life to the full, and both are members of Grange Methodist Church. Friends, Jean and Mick Malkin told Grange Now: “On Sunday (14th December) the congregation sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to them as they blew out the candles on their cake. They are much loved and admired by their friends and family and we wish them many more happy, healthy years to enjoy living in our wonderful town.”

Decision to be made on controversial planning applications

Unfortunately, we went to press on the day the planning department were due to meet to discuss two controversial planning applications: Jack Hill and Tricketts Field. Grange Now covered the Tricketts Field application in the December issue and the issues on that site remain the same. The Jack Hill site, (planning application num:SL/2014/0800) which Applethwaite Homes (part of the Eric Wright Group) hope to develop is causing concern due, in part, to the split of executive and affordable housing. The affordable homes will be kept together on one part of the site and will be separated, by a wall, from the 3 and 4 bedroom houses.

Extravaganza is a big success

After months in the planning this year’s Grange Extravaganza took place on 6th December and, thankfully, the weather was cold but certainly much friendlier than last year’s event.

Families turned out in force, and such was the popularity of the event that Santa ran out of presents at around 1pm and the hog roast ran out at half past. There were husky rides, craft stalls, raffles, roasted chestnuts and, of course, Santa. Builders Supply Company (BSK) is celebrating after its Grange branch received an award at the Builder’s Merchants Federation (BMF) awards ceremony last month. Simon Melling, assistant branch manager, has been working at the company for the past year, and has just been awarded Apprentice of the year for his work on the BMF Advanced Apprenticeship in Customer Service. Mike Dixon, manager of the Grange branch, also received a similar award in 2010 and is thrilled at what his colleague has achieved. Universal Credit rollout in Cumbria

Universal Credit is being rolled out across Cumbria in the near future. Universal Credit is a new benefit that the Government says will make welfare simpler and make work pay. It is a single benefit that will eventually replace Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit. It is paid monthly, usually direct into a bank or building society account, and will include rent that you will then pay to your Landlord yourself. The rollout starts for new

Community shop links with school to create a thriving business. Witherslack Community Shop has, during the past twelve months, forged very successful links with pupils at Witherslack Hall School.

A group of Food Technology students at the school have set up a business enterprise that has involved supplying the community shop with incredibly good cakes that fly off the shelves as soon as they are delivered, every Thursday. In an effort to build on this success they have also recently added ready meals to their range. Their range includes: lasagne, curry, cottage pie and soup, and they have all proved to be a big hit with the shop’s customers. Rachel Stokes, Joint Manager of the

Mayor’s Report

It seems as though the last month has been the busiest so far for Jackie and I. Our first appearance was at the Information Centre Volunteers meeting and lunch. This was a very successful event and I would like to repeat here just how much we value the work of those who give their time and knowledge to make our TIC the success it is. Without them the experience of both visitors and residents would be much the poorer.

The next time Jackie and I made an official appearance was when we met the Beavers. They had lots of questions for us and I had some for them. The Beavers were given a tour of the building and were very impressed with the Council Chamber, its huge table and giant, slippery leather chairs. One of the young people commented that you ‘wouldn’t be able to fall asleep in a meeting in case you slid under the table!’ We ended a very enjoyable session by playing the Hokey Cokey. I hope no-one took photos! On 22nd we dropped into the Open Day at the Institute to have a really good look around and marvel at the hard work Peter Coomber and his team have put in to achieve a totally refurbished building. I often attend events and meetings at the Institute but had never ventured upstairs to the snooker room. Wow! A hidden gem in the centre of Grange, and a step back in time. And then began the Christmas festivities, starting with the Charity Christmas Fair. This event was a

As we start another year I would just like to wish you all a happy and prosperous 2015.

A new Project due to start in the New Year at Grange Library is the Computer tablet programme. This will enable all ages to access more information and work interactively with the new portable computer tablets that will be available for use at the Library. I was able to find County funding to facilitate this so that everyone will benefit from this new service. The County Council budget consultation for 2015/16 is still ongoing and will end on the 20th January. I know people are saying we cannot affect these decisions. In 2014 with relentless pressure from the public and the Conservative Group on the County Council the decision to implement on-street car parking charges was withdrawn by the Lib-Dem Labour Coalition at Carlisle. This is a victory for common sense and makes sure our small rural Towns are not

resounding success and I banked £500 for the Mayor’s Charities. I would like to thank all those who donated prizes or other items for this event as well as a massive ‘thank you’ for their time and energy, to all those who helped organise and run the day. The other groups who also had tables at the event all seemed to think it was worthwhile and I hope they too banked goodly sums. This weekend, I was lucky enough to spend time with Taffy Thomas at the Extravaganza, having been asked to present prizes to the winners of the first Grange Literary Competition, which we jointly judged. The entries were of a consistently high standard and it was a pity they couldn’t all have won, but sadly that isn’t how it works. It was really great to see the town in festive spirits and so many of the business folk engaged in the events. The culmination of the day was the lighting of the tree and the arrival of Santa, which despite the rain really was a lovely thing to be invited to take part in. On a sadder note, I was very disappointed, and indeed quite angry, that some selfish person has damaged one of the panels on the lido with graffiti. These panels were paid for by local businesses and individuals and have given pleasure to hundreds of people, local and visitors alike. We will be doing our best to remove this excrescence and really hope that there will not be a recurrence. May I take this opportunity on behalf of the Town Council, to wish you all a very healthy and happy New Year. Tricia Thomas December 2014

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to a great 2015. As we left 2014 and entered 2015 we faced yet another threat to the services at Westmorland General Hospital. This time the Trust has announced plans to change the shift patterns on the maternity service with the result that the Helme Chase unit will be closed overnight and at weekends with a midwife on call to open it up if anyone needs it. There is no question that this is a downgrade in the service that is being provided to women having babies in South Lakeland. No woman in labour wants to arrive at their maternity unit to find it locked with the lights off and a sign asking them to ring a midwife to drive round with the key to open it up. As many of you will know the maternity unit is a particular concern of mine, our children were born there and we ran a successful campaign to keep it open back in 2000. What is really

Five Minutes Fire Check Could Save Lives. Cumbria’s residents are being urged to carry out an outline five-minute home fire safety check. Cumbria County Council’s Fire & Rescue Service (CFRS) offers an online assessment to help people understand the risk of fire in their homes. The free assessment is then used by CFRS to determine whether a personal Home Accident Reduction (HART) visit is required.

Through HART, CFRS works closely together with other agencies including NHS and Age UK, and has expanded the scope of the home safety visits to also cover aspects such as preventing falls and mobility issues. What is the point of making Trusts more accountable to the populations they serve if they continue to make changes that everyone I have heard from disagrees with? I have been in touch with the Chief Executive of the Trust demanding that this is only a temporary change that they review things after 6 months to see how it is working but particularly they need to talk to us before they make any final decisions.

On that issue I would really like to hear the views of the service that you get from the Trust, whether in Kendal, Barrow, Lancaster or even the health centre in Ulverston. The Trust has been rated as “failing” by the authorities and as a result has been put into special measures. In an inspection by the Care Quality Commission earlier last year the leadership and safety at the Trust were rated as inadequate. Of the three main hospitals only Westmorland General achieved a rating of

being above average in the service that it provides to its patients. I want to use the opportunity of these “special measures” to collect as many views (good and bad) of the service being provided by the Trust so that I can take these to the authorities who monitor the Trust and work with them to ensure that we all get the care that we deserve in this part of the world. 2015 promises to be a big year for me. Many things will remain the same I am sure that we will continue to have to fight for our hospital and other health services but in May we will face the General Election. I try to work as hard as I can for people around here all year round but an election where I could easily find myself out of my job if you don’t feel I have been working hard enough certainly focuses my mind. “Muddles - don’t get muddled!” You could be forgiven for getting muddled in a panto which lasted 116 years!

I am of course referring to the youth section of Grange and District Amateur Operatic Society and their fabulous interpretation of Sleeping Beauty. Fantastic performances from everyone, ably led by Amy Shepherd (Muddles), Murray Adams (the Dame), Elisia Carter and Jessica Walmsley as the King and Queen, and, of course, the King’s panties (you had to be there) Fetch and Carry. Molly Cowley was exceptional as bad witch Hazel while Katie Gregory and Lucia Harrington took on the role of Princess Rose as a child and then a teenager.

She was about 4 years old and she lived every minute of that show. Another successful fundraiser during the evening was a “Guess the Weight of The Christmas Cake” competition which was provided free of charge by Andrew Southcott Catering. Thanks to Lakeland Motor Museum and Andrew Southcott providing their services free of charge, a massive £850 was raised for the hospice.

The ‘Singing for the Brain’ sessions in the Methodist Schoolroom each Thursday morning for dementia sufferers have gone extremely well. Run by the Soroptimists in association with the Alzheimer’s Society, the 10-week pilot ended on 18th December, but it has been agreed that we will start again on Thursday, 22nd January and run until 2nd April, this time at the Allithwaite Community Centre where parking is easier. The sessions start at 10.30 am with coffee and biscuits before the one-hour of singing and fun from 11 am. There is time afterwards for anyone who wants another cuppa and the chance for a chat. We have averaged 20 people

Healthy (& Tasty) New Year Eating

With the festivities of the Christmas period behind us, so too are those sinful Christmas foods. The pies and pastries consumed without hesitation must now be paid for with strict healthy eating. But, before you plan a month long diet of cabbage soup, remember that as a rule, humans don’t react well to change, especially not abrupt changes. We were pleased to welcome Tim Farron and his family to St Paul’s for the reception to mark the opening of the Christmas Tree Festival. The church was full to capacity with everyone enjoying the spectacle of thirty-six decorated Christmas trees, performances from the Bay Community Singers and Grange Primary School choir and musicians. With wine and canapés during the interval and Robin Webster as Master of Ceremonies, it was a fantastic start to the festive season. A group from church led a Christmas crafting session at Grange Primary School helping the children to make mobiles to decorate the church. The mobiles can be seen suspended from the lights and have the Peace and Goodwill to All theme to complement the Festival.

Two weddings and two baptisms were good pre-Advent services. We thank God for Johnnie’s excellent lungs and charming smile. He just loves water!! The Bible Time Line course was much appreciated and a group want to re-run it after Christmas. The Christocentric nature of the Old Testament was very revealing for many. It is hoped that St Cuthbert’s will be going on the market soon once one or two pieces of necessary information are obtained. The Grange Extravaganza was, I believe, very successful – good returns and the weather wasn’t too bad considering the time of year. The next one must be in summer – no question! The re-vamping of the Co-op led indirectly to varying questions and rumblings about the car park. The town is normally difficult for parking spaces, so no way could one ignore the pressure that would have been had I not allowed the service people to use

A former English teacher, Jean published The Murder of Patience Brooke in 2014, a mystery where Charles Dickens and Superintendent Jones investigate the murder of an assistant matron at a home for Fallen Women. The event starts at 2.30 pm, tickets priced at £1 to include refreshments are available from the library or can be reserved by telephone on 32749.

A Dementia Information session will be held on Friday 9th January from 10 am to 12 noon and a representative from the Alzheimer’s Society will be available to provide advice and guidance for diagnosed individuals and their family and friends.

The re-launched Story Sacks have proved very popular and are available in a wide range of topics including art, animals, counting, rhymes and even a couple in French. Each bag contains 1 or more books and a related toy or game. They are free to borrow on an adult library card for 3 weeks.

Grange Methodist Church The Women’s Network Meeting in December had a Christmas flavour. Ros Harrison, demonstrated Christmas Flower arrangements. At the 3 T’s meeting, members took part and there was Christmas music and readings. One, a Yorkshire man’s description of a visit to a performance of the Messiah, another was the choir boys carol singing round their village, from ‘Cider with Rosie’, and an all time favourite,

Our Macmillan Volunteer will be holding a drop in session on Monday 5th January from 12 noon to 2 pm to provide advice on the information available including Macmillan booklets and library books in the library Macmillan collection.

‘’Twas the Night before Christmas’, the poem all children love. Afterwards, members enjoyed a Jacob’s Join buffet, where so many goodies were displayed and eaten. Morning service at Grange Methodist Church was taken by Toast Church,

where the children, demonstrated a ‘mega machine’ which in its turn produced an angel, a manger, lambs and sheep, shepherds, two kings, (the third was out of sorts), and a lovely real live Kenyan family, mother, father and nine week old baby.

The children are raising money for ‘Send a Cow’, which is usually in calf, and when it is weaned, the calf is passed on to another family. There were plates of homemade biscuits

to enjoy with cups of tea after service. All much appreciated by the adults.

In the evening, children of the Pantomime group held a carol service in the church, again demonstrating their talents. They are in demand, to present programmes in residential homes around the town. Thanks are due to Jean and Mick Malkin and other adults for training and helping them to overcome shyness as they perform.

The theme this time is to be “The Well is Deep”, centering our thoughts on the Samaritan women who met Jesus at the Well. SCHOOL REPORTS Congratulations to the School Council who were granted their RotaKids Charter, a first for a Grange school and the Rotary Club of Grange. Rotarian John Biddlestone said, “I am delighted to support the children and Miss Eccleston, teacher responsible for coordinating the work of the School Council, in establishing the first RotaKids Charter in our town. The children are a joy to work with, so enthusiastic and keen to help others. Their ambitious programme aims to introduce a walking bus every Wednesday morning. This is to keep children safe on the way to school and also to reduce morning congestion around the school. Recently, they have launched a Christmas Toys For Sick Children Appeal and the RotaKids plan to visit sick children at Furness General Hospital to deliver toys etc. Finally, the school’s partnership with Sicles Primary School, Nepal will be supported in the New Year by sending parcels of writing materials, workbooks, stickers and pens.

Allithwaite Primary Year 5 and 6 have spent this term studying the Mayan Civilisation. Part of this work has involved composing a piece of music to reflect a Mayan Sacrifice.

Cartmel Priory School hosted its fifth Primary Maths Master Class in November. Fourteen students attended the course from the local Primary Schools of Allithwaite, Flookburgh, Grange, Cartmel and Leven Valley. The students completed a workshop which focused on high level probability questions based around the popular sweet Smarties. Students went on to calculate the probability of their older family members being able to win the lottery. Well done to Ben, Dylan, Robert, Toby, Ross, Amy, Gina, Holly, Hannah, Zoe and Hannah.

To help them understand how music tells a story they have been using the BBC‘s Ten Pieces project. “Ten Pieces is an exciting new initiative for primary schools, focusing on classical music and creativity. It was launched this Autumn and is running for a year. Ten Pieces aims to open up the world of classical music to children – and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to the pieces through music, dance or digital art.” – BBC . One of the pieces was especially commissioned and composed by Anna Meredith. Anna is a contemporary composer who explores sounds made by using

voices and body percussion. Clapping, stamping and movement are incorporated into her work. The children used this to compose their own piece telling the story of a Mayan Sacrifice. The children were split into groups and each group composed their own piece of body percussion and choreographed movement to go with it. The final piece had a heart beat rhythm throughout that increased in speed as the music choreography told its story. The music and dance finished with a triumphant shout from all the children symbolising the Mayans jubilance at their victims’ death!

Preparations and rehearsals for the Christmas productions are in full swing. Nursery and Reception have been learning about People Who Help Us. They held an assembly about firemen, policemen, and even met someone from CIU (Crime Investigation Unit), who explained and demonstrated the fascinating job he does. Year 2, 3 and 4 have had a very busy term researching the changes from Stone to Iron Age and preparing for the Christmas Production. Year 5 and 6 were also busy designing and creating a Christmas themed apps/games using the Espresso Coding free code section in order to enter their competition, which gives our children a brilliant opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge acquired over this term. We thoroughly enjoyed this year’s pantomime ‘Aladdin’ at Kendal Town Hall, which was a very kind Christmas treat from Friends of Flookburgh School. Stories Round the Christmas Tree was also a pleasure for children, staff and parents. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Three teams of girls attended the Waddecar Service Crew Challenge, where the teams of 3 navigating around bases on Beacon Fell completing various tasks on each base including; first aid, map reading, knots, DIY and team challenges. Despite a wet start to the day all the teams did well, but a massive well done to Philippa Bell, Ellie Douglas and Libby Ellwood who came 16th out of 85 teams. November 30th we also attended Cumbria South’s 40th Anniversary Celebrations at the Manjushri Centre, Conishead Priory, Ulverston with nearly 1000 other Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Guiders and Guests. We participated in a celebration service, meditation, dancing, singing, light parade, food and renewal of our Promise. A great afternoon was had by all. Dear Editor In your November edition we wrote about the sad demise of the bench which had been mindlessly thrown over the cliff from the View Point in Yewbarrow Wood. We are now happy to report that the bench has been repaired and returned to this spot, offering walkers an opportunity to stop and take in the wonderful view over Grange and Morecambe Bay. So, many thanks to whoever it was who did the restoration job( which must have been quite challenging) . Also may we take this opportunity to thank the person who constructed the bench in the first place.It was a great idea and is much appreciated. Two Local Walkers.

Dear Editor After attending a performance of Grange Drama’s Educating Rita, a number of students, who are taking the Access to Higher Education Diploma at Furness College, wrote to Grange Now with their review of the play. Paul, Rebecca, Charlotte and Sarah wrote: “After attending Educating Rita, we feel that it really helped us as students to gain an insight into the characters and the context in which the play was written. The Grange production of the play put meat on the bones for us and we feel gave a greater understanding of the intricacies happening between the two characters.” Charlotte wrote: “The actors played the characters superbly and gave me a greater insight in to the book”, and Vicky and Kim felt: “Some of us found it refreshing and others found it was rather too contemporary and did not fit well within the play.” Furness College students review Educating Rita

LEGAL TALK Divorce is never easy!

Divorce needn’t be difficult with the right advice and at Poole Townsend we offer sound legal advice along with a fixed fee, so you will know exactly what you are paying for. There are essentially five grounds for divorce:• Adultery • Unreasonable Behaviour • Desertion • Having lived apart for more than two years (your spouse has to agree in writing) and • Having lived apart for more than five years (in which case there is no need for the spouse’s agreement). If you both agree to the divorce you will usually not have to appear in court, but if the divorce is defended or if both of you petition, you may have to attend a court hearing. If you both agree to the divorce, you can apply for a decree nisi, an official certificate that says the judge agrees you can divorce. Six weeks after you have received this, you can apply for a decree absolute, the legal document that shows your marriage has ended. Divorce proceedings don’t have to be combative and you do not need to go to court to sort out how your assets will be split, although clearly that depends on individual situations. Through collaborative family law, you and your solicitor could work with your former partner and their solicitor in four-way meetings, aimed at helping you reach the most suitable outcome by agreement, rather than through the courts. How soon you reach the end goal of receiving the decree absolute depends on how straightforward matters are and how acrimonious the separation. In an uncontested divorce you could expect to receive the decree within four to six months. In divorce, all assets acquired during the marriage are essentially laid out on the table and divided up according to fairness and need: pensions, overseas bank accounts, corporate bank accounts, property – everything. Pre-marital acquisitions, and things bought post-separation, are generally not divided up, unless they are needed. If you cannot reach a financial agreement, you might decide to involve a mediator to facilitate discussions, although they cannot offer legal advice. You can find a mediator through resolution.org.uk. We have a solicitor within the firm who is a member of Resolution. If you cannot agree on how to divide your assets, the next stage would usually be to instruct solicitors to help you negotiate a settlement agreement. Once you have reached an agreement, whether with or without external help, your solicitor will need to draw up a consent order, which must be signed by each party and their respective solicitors. A consent order is very important, it allows you to enforce clauses further down the line and can include a clean break order so that neither party can later make a claim. SOCIETY ROUND-UP R.N.L.I The Lifeboat Coffee Morning was held in the Methodist Church Hall in Grange on Saturday 8th November. There was a constant flow of people coming in, and the Branch was very pleased to have so much support at this annual event which raised £868.33 for the RNLI. A raffle was held during the morning, and the top prizes were won as follows: Christmas hamper – Mr Fell; Hazelmere Café voucher – Ms Graham; Christmas cake – Mr Lamb. Other prizes were won by Mr Fryer, Mrs Gardner, Ms Thomas, Ms Tyson, Ms Murthwaite, Mr Smith, Ms Shaw. Very grateful thanks to everyone who donated items, and attended this event, and helped to raise funds for the lifeboats.

Grange Institute Thanks to lottery funding, Grange Institute has recently undergone an extensive makeover. According to one committee member, the most common expression from visitors attending the Open Day on 22nd November was: “wow”. There are probably many residents of Grange, new and lifelong, who have never ventured inside the former Working Mens’ Institute, and who would be surprised at the accommodation inside. Civic Mayor, Tricia Thomas, attended the Open Day and was persuaded to pick up a cue and was given a quick lesson in ‘lining up a shot’. Councillor Thomas has no plans to give up her present career though! The Institute will be holding its Annual General Meeting on 30th January 2015 at 7.30 p.m. in the Institute. All members of the public are invited to attend.

Grange Soroptimists Nine members attended the Soroptimist Conference in Harrogate, meeting members from Great Britain and Ireland and countries in Africa and Asia. The Town Crest donated by the club has been much admired and the plaque of donor’s names should be finished shortly. There has been a delay due to a welcome further donation. Four members handed out White Ribbon stickers to men and teenage boys in Ulverston highlighting the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This follows a similar event in Grange last year. The pilot scheme of “Singing for the Brain” working with the Alzheimer’s Society has been most successful and a further term of sessions is planned for the New Year. The club will be holding a 50’s and 60’s Disco on Feb 14th in the Victoria Hall. Proceeds will go to “Mary’s Meals” a charity providing a hot meal in school for chronically poor children in Malawi and other countries. This attracts children into

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI The business part of the December meeting was dealt with as quickly as possible. Congratulations were given to our quiz team, the Allithwaite Allsorts, who in addition to winning their heat at the Cumbria-Westmorland Federation Quiz had won the event overall. The packed house then got down to the serious task of enjoying Christmas. Mulled wine and mince pies were served to members who took part in various games interspersed with entertainment from the committee. There was the straight-faced panto, Snow White this year, which is always well received and the afternoon was rounded off with tea and carols during which gifts were distributed to each member. The first meeting of 2015 will be on 6th January when David Tomlinson from Warburtons will be speaking. The February meeting will be on the 3rd when an Origami demonstration will be given by Stephen Watson. New members are always welcome, contact Wendy Graham (secretary) 015395 32702.

Grange and District Art Society At the Christmas luncheon, at Clare House Hotel, we installed Dr David Pearson as President of our Society. He has served the Society over many years and is well known for his striking paintings and sculptures. The Autumn Exhibition of our paintings in the Grange Library ended on 15th December and received many favourable comments. Our main Exhibition will be held in the Victoria Hall in July. Our programme of weekly Thursday afternoon painting meetings recommences at Allithwaite Community Centre on 8th January. The programme includes a number of demonstrations by professional artists and we have an annual outing to a place of artistic interest. The evening meetings are continuing in St Charles Church Hall,Grange on the first Friday each month from 7 to 9pm. Witherslack WI Members came early to have a group photo taken ( again) to commemorate our 90th Anniversary. Several had not been present last month when it was first taken. Ken Etteridge was the photographer. Menu choices were made for the dinner in January and a deposit taken. Subscriptions are due in January and treasure Shirley Christie handed out envelopes for these. Two ladies will go to Crook WI`s New Year party. The speaker Trevor Hughes , assisted by David Oates, described an amazing trip they, and a third friend, made when they went from Kendal to London by Kayak. It took 6 months of planning, researching and getting themselves fit.Their combined ages added up to 180+ and it took 16 days.They were fortunate in having a back-up man

who drove the camper van and had a hot meal ready for them every day.He also provided the picnic lunches.They were also lucky with the weather as it was October.There were many problems along the way but they kept cheerfully on their way and finished at Tower Bridge 1/2 hour ahead of schedule. Newton and Field Broughton WI At the time of writing, members were looking forward to the Christmas party on December 17th with Judith Poole’s Childrens Choir to look forward to, and also a buffet supper, made by committee members. Santa was paying a visit with his sack full of presents to what promised to be a fun and festive time. The January meeting will take place on the 14th when subscriptions of £36 will be payable. There will also be a quiz. The revised start time of 7.40pm will apply.

Grange Institute The Institute will be holding its Annual General Meeting on 30th January 2015 at 7.30 p.m. in the Institute. All members of the public are invited to attend. This is an opportunity to see how the Institute functions and members of the Institute will gladly show interested persons round the building on the night and explain the memberships available.

Grange Lecture Society Nicholas Crane, presenter of the TV series ‘Coast’, returned to Grange on 25th November to deliver the Donovan Noble Memorial Lecture. In an attractively illustrated talk he took his audience on a journey around Britain’s coastline concentrating on places and people featured in the TV series and recalling, where appropriate, something of the history. He also offered an insight into the making of the programmes, the different personnel involved and the challenges of filming at difficult or remote locations like Cape Wrath. On 2nd December in his Nevile Burwell Memorial Lecture ‘Wild Vision – A Celebration of the Natural World’, John Beatty presented an exciting retrospective of his career as a nature and adventure photographer. Whether he was taking close-ups of an Icelandic volcanic eruption, encountering emperor penguins in Antarctica or celebrating round a camp fire with primitive Kalahari Bushmen, John’s arresting images and inspirational commentary held his listeners in thrall. On 13th January explorer Geoff Somers will speak on ‘Borneo – Vanishing World’ and on 27th January the intriguing title of former barrister Jim Williams’ lecture is ‘Great Forgers’. Lectures begin at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Cartmel and District Flower Club On 9th December in the Victoria hall Grange, we held our” Gala” demonstration ‘Christmas Greetings’ by the very talented, national demonstrator, Sue Wareing. Sue entertained us with amusing stories from her early years in and

around Barrow, from school days, family, workplaces, and now flower arranging. She very generously gave hints and tips on how we too could achieve the ingenious containers she used which she made herself with help from her plumber husband, Ron. There was a choice and variety of beautiful flowers including roses, carnations, amaryllis and magnificent orchids. The stage was truly a magical Christmas scene, with a large white star decorated with white orchids. In the audience, we welcomed the Mayor and Consort of Grange, and the chair of Ulverston Flower Club. Thank you to everyone who supported our Gala . It was a very memorable evening. Next meeting will take place on 16th February at 2pm in Cartmel village hall. Visitor’s very welcome.

NSPCC On Saturday 22nd November, our annual Christmas coffee morning was held for the first time in the United Reformed Church Hall. This was most successful and was a very sociable and enjoyable morning attended by those who supported the NSPCC in their task of looking after vulnerable children in the North West. We would like to thank everyone, most sincerely, who came and helped to raise the fantastic sum of £553.60. We are most grateful to the supporters of the NSPCC and look forward to seeing you at our forthcoming events in 2015. Meanwhile, we would like to wish everyone a very happy New Year.

Grange Ramblers On 6rd December Christmas lunch was held once again at the Woodland Hotel, group members enjoyed a festive 3 courses meal of traditional fare, it was a very sociable occasion much enjoyed by everyone, thanks to Woodlands Hotel for the good food and excellent service. On Tuesday 2nd December, 7 members set off in bright sunshine with a nip in the air for a 6 miles circular walk from Baycliffe to Sunbirck, the walk started from Fisherman Arms, the nice country road took us to Aldingham, we trekked along the beach with stunning reflections from the wet sands and background of blue sky. We join the path across fields to Scales Farm and Wind Hill then leading to Scales. After the lunch in the sunshine, the route leading to Sunbrick footpath then Baycliffe, lovely view over the bay with rivulets of water threading a path across the sands, the walk ended back to Fisherman Arms for refreshment. Walk leader Alan Heaton. Why not join us and walk off the excesses of the festive period with a 5.5 miles Christmas walk around Haverthwaite/Bigland?

Lower Holker Village Hall Our Christmas Bingo was very successful and £886.00 was raised for the hall’s funds. Over 109 people attended and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks to everyone who donated either a prize, cash donation or simply helped on the night. The funds will go towards updating the fire deterrent and warning system. The AGM will take place on Thursday 15th January 2015, starting at 7pm, (followed by the normal committee meeting). Please come along to the AGM. You may like what you see and wish to join the committee. We are now looking at events for next year. Is there any event that you would like to see us put on? Any suggestions would be welcome. We are always on the lookout for fresh ideas/input. Our ever popular Quiz Night will take place on Thursday 22nd January at 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start. Come along and have a convivial evening amongst friends while keeping the “little grey cells” exercised. Up to four members in a team at £1.00 per team member. Rotary Club of Grange over Sands As foretold, the Club along with members of the Lions Club, set off with Santa and his little helpers in various parts of Grange over Sands and Allithwaite during December. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the collection which will be spent on local charities. Sixty Rotarians, their friends and family attended the Christmas Lunch at the Netherwood Hotel, when President Colin Wilkinson presided over a happy social occasion with a superb meal. The Club has recently introduced ‘Friends of Rotary’. Friends assist at various fundraising events, and it gives them an opportunity to see if they would like become Rotarians. Mrs. Chris Kirkman was admitted as a friend at the Christmas Lunch and we look forward to promoting Mr. John Kaye from friend to member during January. The winners of the November Fifty Club draw were Keith Biddlestone who won the £10.00 and runners up were Marion Martindale and Stephen Wilkinson.

Grange Lions At our November meeting it was decided to donate money to MIND Cumbria as this organisation is struggling to stay open because of a lack of funds. Mental health issues are so common these days and none of us know if we may need support from this fantastic organisation in the future. December saw a very lively and enjoyable Presentation Evening which was attended by Lions, their family and friends. Donations were presented to several organisations. Amongst these were Norman Broadhurst Chairman of St. Mary’s Hospice accepting a cheque on their behalf and Barbara and Reg Brown who accepted a cheque on behalf of Jigsaw, the Cumbria Children’s Hospice. Representatives of

Flooks 4 Youth and Kidsafe also attended as did Luke Armstrong, a local teenager who was a member of the GB junior baseball team this year. December also saw us in Flookburgh with our usual Coffee morning in the village hall....always well attended by a very supportive community and our thanks to all who helped make this a successful event. Grange Lions and Santa on his sleigh had several busy evenings touring the area collecting for local charities. Despite some bad weather Santa and his elves had a good pre-Christmas season and will be enjoying a well earned rest come Christmas Day!

Grange over Sands Golf Club Members and visitors have been enjoying several events this last month. The golfers have still been able to play even though the temperatures have dropped. There has been a good Quiz night, a coffee morning and also the ladies put on a mini pantomime which was fun to do and apparently enjoyed by the audience. Our quizzes will continue every month over the winter and are open to all with supper served half way through the evening. Our new Gents’ Captain and Lady Captain have now taken over their roles for the coming year and we all wish them well. Grange WI Members had a great Festive evening at the ‘At Home’ Bistro in December. The food was excellent - sprout and black pudding fritters were a triumph. Deb won the festive quiz and members took home some fabulous prizes in the raffle. Grange WI is really getting established in the town – we even got two mentions in the Christmas Panto Sleeping Beauty. We have a varied programme of events planned for 2015 – something to interest everyone so do check out the programme on display in the Library from mid-January. Our first event on Thursday 22 January is a creative one with Amy Holland demonstrating the art of origami flowers and there will be a chance to make some too. New members are welcome to join us. Grange and District U3A Our November general meeting was entertained by Dr Rob David on the subject of ‘Ice Houses in Cumbria’. What appeared to be a rather dry subject proved to be a stimulating and informative item enlivened by an account of school research into the functioning of the Levens Hall ice house. Perhaps, as a result of the presentation, a number of U3A members will be seen wandering around the hall grounds searching for the elusive building. December saw successful events at the Heron Theatre – the film ‘Warhorse’ and a lively theatre production of ‘A Christmas Carol’. Bob Lear’s interest in all things dramatic has led him to consider adding a new ‘Cinema Goers’ group to the U3A portfolio of interest groups – watch this space. And for the competitive among us, January brings the challenge of ‘friendly’ badminton and table tennis matches between Grange and South Lakes U3As. The general meeting speaker programme for 2015 has now been published and interest groups are firming up their own programmes. 2015 promises to be a special year with events tailored to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Grange U3A.
