Letter from the Editor

Change of deadline for next issue to Thursday 11th April. Please can I ask for all entries to be in by the Thursday rather than the usual Friday to allow for a staff holiday the following week. Grange Now readers may have seen in the news that the organ donation procedure in England is changing. The introduction of Max and Keira’s Law will provide hope for the 41 people in Cumbria. A contentious issue which effectively makes us all opted in organ donors. What do you think? Prom Art kicks off the season from the end of April. Lots of other dates for your diary to be found on page 14 and 15 including the Cartmel food market on Friday 19th April, Jack Manning’s presentation on 9th April and many more. SLDC have now committed to spend £2 million on the so called ‘light tough refurbishment’ of the Lido - when this does finally happen it is very good news as anything is better than what is there right now. Grange CIC want your views and ideas for their business plan, while Save Grange Lido are also organising an event on 11th April. Read all about it on pages 18 and 19. Fr. P. very kindly visited our office this month with an Easter message which you will find on the church page (complete with his traditional witty p.s.). With the clocks going forward and Mother’s Day (31st March) Easter (21st April) and Brexit (who knows), there is certainly plenty going on. Talking of which, a very happy mother’s day Mum!

Best wishes, All at Grange Now A huge thank you to a longstanding deliverer After nearly 20 years, our longest-standing deliverer, Mr Peat is hanging up his yellow delivery bag.

We would all like to wish him a long and happy retirement! Thank you for all your hard work delivering Grange Now in all sorts of weather. We appreciate all your hard work and you’ll certainly be missed. All the best from the Grange Now team.

Fashion fan Betty turns 100 “Everything in moderation, except for clothes shopping!”

That’s the secret to a long life joked Betty Patchett, a resident at The Old Vicarage Care Home in Allithwaite, near Grange-overSands, as she celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday 16th March with family, friends and staff.

Betty has always loved clothes shopping, so as a birthday surprise the care home arranged for local clothes store Davenports to bring in a selection of clothes, so she could choose a present from the care home team. Kamal Siddiqi, owner of the care home where Betty has been a resident since December 2017, said, “Betty is warm, funny, friendly and no-nonsense – a typical Yorkshire woman!”

A grandmother and great grandmother, Betty was born in Bradford on March 16, 1919. She moved to Grange-overSands in 1999 to be close to her sister, Peggy Cockcroft who was also a resident at the care home until she passed away in 2009. During the party, Betty looked back at old photos, showing her great-niece, nine-year-old Ellie Chapman, a picture of her when she was in her twenties that her husband Kenneth carried with him throughout World War II.

With all the main banks shutting in the area and indeed across the country, did you know that you may be able to carry out your banking needs at the local post office.

This handy guide explains what you can do. The Post Office is able to perform many of the services of the banks. It is possible to pay money into your high street bank account using a debit card.

A Glittering 80 Years in Grange

Johnston’s the family jewellery, gifts and toys business on Main Street in Grange celebrate their 80th birthday this year. Going back all those years to when Arthur Johnston started trading as A. Johnston Jewellers along with his wife Laura, they then welcomed their two sons Rodney and Alan into the business in the early sixties. Alan’s son Gary joined the business in 1990, with his wife Dawn joining the team in 2011. So a true family business, Johnston’s now not only sell jewellery but also gifts and a wide range of toys. For example

Left to right - Gary Johnston - 1990, Dawn Johnston - 2011, Jackie McLaughlin - 1986, Gill Burrow- 2003, Rodney Johnston - 1963

they are now stocking Melissa & Doug. These award winning toys are known for igniting Children’s passion for play. In fact they are offering Grange Now readers 10% discount off toys on production of the advert. Offer ends 1/6/19.

Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women, and unlike women of a similar age, fewer older men have networks of friends and rarely share personal concerns about health and personal worries. For some, when retirement comes, it can feel like personal identity and purpose is lost. Men’s Sheds can change all of that. Sheds are about meeting like-minded people and having someone to share your worries with. They are about having fun,

The Grange Shed will be open for up to 5 days a week. The members will decide on the activities they want the Shed to host. These activities can include Woodworking, metalworking, Electronics, Model building, Bicycle repairs, Upcycling and repurposing, Gardening or conservation work, Walking and many others. The idea for the Men’s Sheds came about due to concern about the lack of social opportunities for older men. Recently we have seen more evidence come to light that shows loneliness and isolation can be as hazardous to our health.

sharing skills and knowledge, and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. In doing that they reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, they can allow men to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent, and, in some cases, they can save men’s lives.

With the change in the dividend allowance effective from 6th April 2018, it is important that individuals look to make use of all their allowances. Tax incentivised, tax free, or potentially tax free – some of the savings choices on offer. Failing to make the most of these will mean individuals may pay unnecessary tax on their income and savings. But saving into the right tax wrappers at the right time, and crucially in the right order, can limit the tax you might pay. The introduction of tax free allowances in the 2016 Budget means there is greater scope to save and pay little or no tax on those savings. Tax incentivised savings such as pensions, and tax free wrappers such as ISAs, are clearly more preferable than savings which are potentially taxable. But pensions and ISAs come with a savings cap. The tax relief on pensions funding is controlled by earnings, the annual allowance and lifetime allowance. And there is a maximum subscription limit of £20,000 on ISA savings. Once these pots have been maximised it may still be possible to achieve similar tax efficient returns on investment portfolios, with a little bit of careful management of the tax allowances. The new £2,000 dividend allowance still allows the opportunity for tax free saving by building up an investment portfolio where income and gains can be ‘managed out’ by using the respective allowances. Don’t waste allowances - tax allowances not fully used annually will go to waste. This could mean that profits build up, and when taken may only benefit from a single year’s allowances. Efficient tax planning should be a constant process. It doesn’t end once the initial investment wrapper is chosen, utilising available allowances each year can limit future tax payable. Working with a Financial Planner will help you utilise the available tax allowances and ensure your finances remain focused on your long term goals. The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Four lucky Y6 pupils and Headteacher, Gill Pett, from Flookburgh Primary travelled to London on Monday 11 March to celebrate Commonwealth Day at Westminster Abbey. They were in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and The Duke of York. In addition, as well as, the Prime Minister, Theresa May, Commonwealth dignitaries and 800 schoolchildren and young people from across the UK.

The children were excited to be part of this special occasion which is the world’s premier, inter-faith event to specifically celebrate the Commonwealth of Nations. The theme for this years’ service was, ‘A Connected

Commonwealth’, which linked really well with Flookburgh School’s whole-school curriculum focus of, ‘All Around the World’ and the school’s work on human rights, rule of law, democracy and stewardship of the environment. The event was made even more special as, this years’ event marks the 70th anniversary of the Commonwealth. There were performances by renowned, international artists including, Clean Bandit and acclaimed tenor, Alfie Boe; with a reflection by endurance swimmer, ocean advocate and the UN’s Patron of the Oceans, Lewis Pugh.

Thanks to Tim Farron MP, the children were treated to a tour of the Palace of Westminster. Flookburgh school was thrilled that their children were given the opportunity to experience this ‘once in a lifetime’ event. Ball (Let’s Get Crafty) said, “Mum lived life to the full. She was a real entertainer – the sort of person who would always have a batch of scones in the freezer so you could rock up unannounced and she’d still be able to enjoy afternoon tea with you.”

The money donated to Rosemere has paid for a chest freezer and a toaster. This means ice cream and ice lollies will always be on offer to patients and their carers. Philippa added, “Mum loved hot crumpets and she also loved ice cream so it’s a perfect way for the money donated from her funeral to have been spent.” As well as supporting Rosemere Cancer Foundation, Philippa and her sisters Rachel Woodward, of Kendal, and Katie Dinshaw, of Skipton, gifted sponsorship money raised when Rachel and Katie took part in last year’s Skipton Triathlon to Cancer Care and The Haven in their mum’s name. let’s get

crafty with Philippa Ball Textile Artist

I

’ve been set two challenges this month. The first was to devise ideas for what to do with a bulging button box. The second, how to repair jackets where the zipper pull tab on the slider has been pulled off. My plan repurposes the buttons into a new zipper pull (toggle). You need some beading wire (Boyes in Kendal have a great selection of colours). Cut a length of wire to be three times the length you want your finished toggle. Bend the wire into a U shape, then thread on the buttons, making sure the wire goes through 2 different holes, so the bottom of the U forms the bottom of the stack. When you’ve got a big enough toggle twist the ends together tight against the last button to keep them in place. Thread the two ends of the wire through the hole in your zip (one left to right, the other right to left to create a loop) then twist them together to secure the toggle in place. Snip off any excess wire and bend the end back on itself. I used tiny silver bells with mine for a bit of extra sparkle.

I made a longer button toggle to use as a tassel for my desk key. They’d also be great as key rings. Larger buttons can be used to hold together stud earrings and stop them getting lost.

Last but not least, take your favourite big buttons, glue a small magnet on the back and stick them on your fridge as a crafty fridge magnet.

A Different Tune by Elis Shotton

Tue 14 May | 7.30pm | Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal Wed 15 May | 7.30pm | Cookes Studio, Barrow Thu 16 May | 7.30pm | Victoria Hall, Grange over Sands Tickets £5.50 available online breweryarts.co.uk or from the Brewery Arts Centre box office Comedy following the formation of a dementia embracing community orchestra and the relationships that develop between its members as they explore the importance of living life to the full.

At the matinee performance of Guys and Dolls on Saturday 16th March, the audience was certainly enjoying the performance.

The action is set around an illegal crap game and secondtime director, Hannah Fish did a stellar job of pulling together what is undoubtedly a big production. Musical Director Jane Thedham ensured the cast and the orchestra were in fine voice and sound. breweryarts.co.uk | 01539 725133 Supported by

The four mains, Chuck Fish (Sky Masterson), Annabel Sharp (Sarah Brown), Martin Gregory (Nathan Detroit) and Trudi Carter (Miss Adelaide) all excelled in their roles and kept the fast-

paced action moving along. It was lovely to see Martin back after a ten year break and good to see 13 year old Reece Carter in his first big role in the opera after many years in panto.

There were too many great performances to mention in the space I have available but I must mention Ian Wilson who played Arvide Abernathy. Ian hasn’t performed in 20 years and went he started to sing his solo ‘More I Cannot Wish You’ there was a noticeable hush. He all but got a standing ovation when he finished - what a voice.

All in all, a great production with a talented cast, wonderful staging, and amazing sound.

Artist of the month Karen Lester, Artist /Printmaker

Redundancy allowed Karen to leave a career in finance and admin and follow her lifelong passion - Art. Have you done any formal art training?

I finished work and took a Foundation Degree in Art with the University of Cumbria at Kendal college followed by a Teaching qualification, also at Kendal college to teach art for adults. It was at Kendal college that I developed my interest in printmaking. It was fun being a student again, quite a big step and so different from working in an office though I worked parttime whilst at college to help pay for the tuition. Finally, I began to get more teaching and was able to drop finance and admin altogether. It’s been hard work but worth it and I am lucky to be able to change career. Today I work on my own art projects as well as teaching art. I now teach a range of classes for the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and also privately in my studio and for groups and organisations

elsewhere as a freelance tutor using a variety of media.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I find inspiration in the Landscape and the focus recently has been the natural world. The scenery in Cumbria is stunning with lots of material to work from including the coast and mountains, becks and fells. I have been teaching at the National Trust Footprint in Windermere with a group form the Brewery Arts Centre since September and it is wonderful to be immersed in the landscape in such a way and to really observe the natural world. You do start to really see more when you paint and draw from life. I was lucky enough to find the perfect studio in Lindale in the building which was formerly the Co-op in its early days. Greywalls studio is perfect with its light and

airy feel with plenty of room to work, with the advantage of a large window for artwork displays. I was delighted to come across this lovely building, which was being used for sales of bespoke bedroom furniture. Primarily a place for me as a base to work on my art, I have invested in its development this last year and am now hoping to develop ways to utilize the space more. It was the perfect showroom for artwork when I was joined by 3 other artists when we took part in the Green Door Trail last September and I hope to take part in this again this year. We had a busy weekend with lots of visitors, quite a number from the village who had not been in the building before. Do you display other artist’s work?

Yes, the window is a good space to display work and currently, I have some beautiful photographic work by Lynn Fotheringham on display.

What’s next?

I’m thinking about a drop-in workshop where local people can come and paint and draw and this is something I hope to develop next autumn. Website karenlester.com Facebook – greywalls studio Instagam- @karen@greywalls

For all art lovers Printfest 2019

Ulverston’s Printfest is the UK’s leading artist-led printmaking festival, and gathers together some of the best printmakers in Britain and beyond in the Coronation Hall. It is a great opportunity to meet artists, see their work exhibited, buy a beautiful print or two and learn more about making prints. This year there will be 46 artists, 12 awards and 2 shops, as well as 4 printmaking workshops led by Cumbria Printmakers. The Printmaker of the Year 2019 is Sadie Tierney, who studied at the Royal College of Art and is an established printmaker and painter based in Portsmouth. After a residency here in the Lake District she will unveil a specially commissioned print at the festival. She has exhibited at Flowers East Gallery, Rabley Drawing Centre and Eton College. Her work is held in public collections including Gdansk Museum, The Bronx Museum of the Arts and Eton College. The image on the poster is titled ‘Over the Mountain’, and is a woodcut exhibited at the 250th Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2018. For further information go to www.printfest.uk

Rehearsals are already underway for Grange Drama’s summer production, Hay Fever by Noel Coward.

As yet it cannot be confirmed whether Charleston flappers ‘will flap’ during four performances of Noel Coward’s 1920’s Play of Manners but it is certain that from her seat in the director’s chair professional Emma Rucastle has some musical aspirations for this production. Together with Deborah Powell (her aide de campe) she will be on the lookout for performers to introduce the audience to music and songs of the period and a book of Coward’s music and song scores have already been acquired from Grange Library.

Lunchtime concerts start a new season at St Paul’s

The first concert sees organiser, Charles Edmondson and Stephen Hitchcock perform a programme of piano duet music which includes works by composers such as Beethoven, Grieg and Scott Joplin. Mr Edmondson told Grange Now, “There should be something for everybody to enjoy and the mood of the music changes every three or four minutes.”

On Thursday 18th April, join us at Grange Institute on Main Street (LA11 6DP) for Hiss the Villain Play Reading. Scripts will include extracts from Maria Marten by Richard Dennis, The Drunkard’s Dilemma and The Wages of Sin by Andrew Sachs and anticipate monologues, poems, singing of songs and listening to music as well. Donning the odd top hat and moustache to give a ‘palace of varieties’ atmosphere will, we hope, add to the fun of the evening. Interested to join in? Why not have a chat with Hilary Stubbs who is leading this play reading session to find out more. All Grange Drama play readings are free community events run by our members. We are a small AmDram company in town who hold our auditions and rehearsals in the Grange Institute Green Room and stage two full length plays annually at Victoria Hall. Bob’s incredible journey

Last year, Grange Now featured Bob Sutcliffe as artist of the month. If you haven’t heard Bob’s story it is quite incredible.

After suffering a viral heart attack at the age of 46 Bob struggled to recover. Formerly a very active person training for triathlons and marathons, Bob found his new condition very frustrating and it was his brother who suggested painting. Other than a teenage watercolour, Bob had never painted before but something strange happened after his heart attack and he is now able to paint the most amazing and intricate pictures.

With his newfound talent, Bob decided to make money for charity and in the two years he has been painting he has raised an incredible £41,000. He has bought a wheelchair

Mark E Jones Statistically we are told that moving house is the one of the most stressful things you will have to deal with in your adult life. Whether you are planning to buy or to sell your home, remortgage a property or you are looking to do all of these at the same time, you want someone working in your corner who knows and understands all the pitfalls and worries you are faced with. You want your views putting forward and your interests put first. When the stress levels are already pushing your limits, you don’t want to hear jargon or be forced to read “legalese”; (that’s our job). You want progress and if there isn’t any, you want to know why not and what your options are going forward to achieve that progress. Email is quick and easy, but sometimes

SCHOOL REPORT

Cartmel CE Primary

Grange Primary

On Monday 11th March all children in school took part in a Science Day about the human body. Using virtual reality, children were able to see inside their body and identify the different organs. Following this, the children then worked in mixed classes from nursery to Year 6 to explore elements of the human body. Children completed activities to develop different lobes of their brain using brain gym; drew skeletons locating the different bones in their bodies and explore the heart as a pump using balloons and straws as well as looking at a lambs heart to deepen their understanding. Thinking further about the human body children also hand the opportunity to bandage an ‘injury’ using the correct techniques as well as learn how to make a 999 call and put a casualty in the recovery position in an emergency. It was a great day for everyone involved with everyone learning new things about the human body. Thank you to everyone who helped support the different activities throughout the day. This half term, children have enjoyed dressing up in different costumes to celebrate World Book Day and our gymnastics teams represented the school in the Partnership competition.

The first couple of months of 2019 at Cartmel Primary School have been packed with activities and visits— many of them celebrating special days in the calendar. The children made the most of World Book Day by coming to school in pyjamas and snuggling up with blankets and pillows to read their favourite books! On Red Nose Day the following week, all children took part in a sponsored bounce to raise money for Comic Relief. And of course we celebrated Shrove Tuesday with pancake races—and by eating one or two as well! Another highlight was our special Design and Technology Day, when classes

planned and built various things to improve their practical skills. The school has also welcomed a host of visitors, including local singer and actor Grace Heap, writer Frances Schoonmaker and the team from Dove Cottage in Grasmere, who helped children learn about William Wordsworth’s famous Daffodils poem and led some great singing, games and crafts. It was still too early for

daffodils when our older children braved the cold weather to take part in a cross-country competition with other schools in the area. As well as running, they have been taking part in the Cyclewise programme to practice their biking skills and safety.

Cartmel Priory In January, students from Cartmel Priory School once again enjoyed the annual ski trip to the Amade region of Austria. 44 pupils from Years 7-9 took part in a week’s ski course in the resorts of Flachau, Alpendorf, and Zauchensee. There had been very heavy snow in the Alps, resulting in fantastic snow conditions throughout the week, as can be seen from the photographs. Skiers of all abilities made great progress. Pupils also had lots of fun during the various après ski activities on offer! It is always such a pleasure giving pupils this opportunity to develop an interest that will hopefully be a lifelong recreational activity, as well as experiencing a different European culture. Allithwaite Primary The Nursery and Reception children have been learning about different Countries after reading the book ‘The Train Ride’. We first ‘visited’ Uganda, inspired by Mrs Hodgson and her trip with the ‘Children of Hope’ team (check out our facebook page if you have not followed this incredible journey). Next was Poland, a visit complimented by the knowledge of our Polish children and their families. Australia is next and we will be meeting a variety of animals native to this Country! Flookburgh CE School Flookburgh School’s calendar has been choc-a-bloc with a whole range of diverse and exciting activities and events over the last month.

Lindale Primary & Pre-school Nursery We celebrated Science and Engineering Week with a science day at school on the theme of ‘Journeys’. The children worked in mixed age groups and moved around school to complete different science investigations with different teachers. Our Early Years children have been doing food technology making all sorts of delicious things including delicious smoothies. There were all sorts of lovely fruit and herbs to use and they smelled and tasted great! Key Stage 1 children have been learning about the body with their ‘Funny Bones’ topic. They have found out lots of new information

resources and build in the style of the different Stone Age periods. They have unfortunately not withstood the recent stormy weather but they looked fantastic beforehand! The Eagle Owls have had a busy month with many activities to stimulate learning including soap making with Mr Russell at Cartmel Priory School, engineering with BAE students, chemical magic shows at Windermere Grammar and visiting Yorvik Viking Museum – phew! We are very lucky to have teachers who take the time to organise and facilitate so many exciting activities. World Book Day was fantastic – the costumes from both adults and children alike where amazing. We read so many brilliant books and the older children worked with their nursery/reception buddies to

complete a treasure book hunt. Red Nose day cake sales rose over £100!

Our Values Group representatives were invited to celebrate ‘World Day of Prayer’ in St. Paul’s Church, Grange - a ‘great wave of prayer encircling the globe’ beginning at sunrise in Samoa and ending 38 hours later back in the pacific. We also held a special assembly devoted to the work of the Blind Society enabling the children to better understand the difficulties that people with a visual impairment have to deal with on a daily basis. The children tried on a number of fascinating ‘spectacles’ so that everyone had some idea of how certain visual impairments affect an individual’s

sight. Our older children spent a day with apprentices from BAE Systems making and programming robots: creativity, team work and big smiles - all day! KS2 children showed off their skiing skills at Kendal Snow Slope as well as honing their Bushcraft skills with the Brathay Trust as part of our Forest Schools development – we have our own woodland after all! And finally, four pupils and Headteacher, Gill Pett, celebrated Commonweatlh Day in Westminster Abbey rounding up the day with watching live, televised debates, in the public galleries of the House of Commons and Lords. What a busy month we’ve all had and, there’s still more to come so, watch this space!

Grange-over-Sands Lido Community Interest Company

want your feedback and ideas as work starts in earnest to restore the fabulous Lido site.

Following the landmark decision by SLDC to refurbish the listed buildings, the hope is that as soon as September this year there will be building work to make the site safe and accessible.

So after 25 years, the site will not only be preserved but also open to the public as a community space. Controversy has raged over the years with consultations and discussions aplenty. But now finally councillors have approved a ‘light touch refurbishment’ and made a commitment to the tune of

£2 million to make it happen. They will continue to work with community groups to see how the future management of the site might happen, and have not ruled out a pool restoration in the future. To that end they propose in the first instance, a removable infilling for the pool.

So now is your chance to send your ideas to the Grange-overSands CIC - their advert and contact details are below. Ideas put forward so far include soft play, splash area, open air events and theatre, cafe, a heritage and information hub, monthly specialist markets, music and theatre, Christmas events and also just the chance to eat, sit, relax, take in the views, look out for wildlife and generally enjoy what is an iconic site and hopefully a big part of the future for Grange.

Memories of Grange Baths

Save Grange Lido are inviting people to share their memories of swimming in the iconic pool. The group are holding the event ‘Grange Lido: Past, present and future’ at the Victoria Hall in Grange. There will be numerous photographs on display of bathers enjoying the heyday of ‘Grange Baths.’ The drop-in session takes place on 11th April, from 2-9pm and is open to anyone who would like to come along and share their memories of swimming in the pool. There will also be the opportunity to chat to members of Save Grange Lido about current progress and future plans to reopen the pool. Save Grange Lido are a community benefit company and plan to reopen the abandoned facility on the promenade with a 50m six lane pool, a heated 25m pool alongside a paddling and play pool. The complex would also boast a community space, restaurant, sauna, steam room and shop. Darren Milby from SGL said: “One of my first memories is splashing around in the kiddies pool with my Mum whilst my Dad was diving into the main pool. Everyone seems to have a story about the Lido. We would love to hear them and if you have any photographs please come along and share them. Save Grange Lido have been working tirelessly behind the scenes on our business case and exciting plans to reopen the site. Come along on the day to find out exactly what we are working on plus there is the opportunity to get involved in this hugely exciting project.” The group plan to raise the funds to renovate the pool, which closed in 1993, alongside the SLDC’s current scheme to repair the buildings. Save Grange Lido plan to raise funds for the renovation of the grade II listed pool and operate the facility without the need for council subsidy.

Hedgehog Havens Needed Across Cumbria

t c e f r e P The

Plot

GROWN WITH RANDOM LOVE

The Perfect Plot Hey Ho! Let’s Hoe!.... It’s April, it’s really warming up, so start by knocking back the first intense, flush of weeds, digout those perennials before they get established and hoe down the small ephemeral ones the warm dry breeze(!) will finish them off. As well as weeds you should start your pest patrol, aphids can be spotted and splatted at this time of year and the slug and snail menace can rear their slimy heads from this month onwards. You should get your potatoes in this month, be careful if the shoots start to poke through as there can still be the odd frosty night, if you can manage cover the shoots up with a little bit of straw on colder nights. As we are coming off the “Hottest Year On Record” and well into the “Hotter than the Hottest Year

on Record” this year, whether you believe in global warming or not it’s probably worth making some provision to protect your plants from becoming dehydrated. Mulches not only enrich the soil and hamper weeds they also help to retain moisture, if you are growing tomatoes or herbs in baskets or pots it’s worth incorporating a skimpy handful of sodium acrylate or ‘swell gel’ to the compost. It can absorb up to a thousand times it’s mass in fluid and is the same stuff used to manufacture nappies.

Otherwise make sure you conserve as much rainwater as you can, in a water butt , an old dustbin or a couple of buckets whether you believe in global warming or not it’s a good habit to get into and most plants prefer rainwater to “corporation pop”.

From the Farm with Will Case

Bleatings from the maternity ward. It’s nice and dry in the lambing shed, but a bit soggy outside. It would be good if the spring weather that mother nature tantalised us with in February would come back. As I write we are just past the half way point of our lambing season. At this time of year we will have around 40 ewes a day giving birth in our lambing shed. As you can imagine this keeps us on our toes! Our day starts with a first check around at 5am and they are monitored during the day with a final check at about 11pm. The sheep are housed in groups of around 50 in straw bedded pens, after they give birth, the lambs are carefully carried to an individual pen. The lambs then bond with their mother and she doesn’t have to worry about them wandering off. After around 36 hours the ewe and lambs are loaded up into the trailer on the quad bike and are delivered to their field to eat the fresh grass that we’ve preserved during the winter and fertilized with manure we spread after Christmas. The sheep will graze these fields for a few weeks

20

before returning back to their usual pastures which should now be fresh and green. The fields they are leaving are then fertilized and left to grow a crop of grass for silage in the summer. Farming is a joined up process and we have to work with natural cycle of the seasons and do our best to make the growth of the grass work for us and our animals. We work with the seasons not against them, and this is why new lambs arrive when the grass begins to grow. But even well prepared plans like this can go wrong as we saw last year with the beast from the east. Farmers cope with the variables and nature tends to balance things out. Life is never dull!

Hedgehog © Jon Hawkins - Surrey Hills Photography

Hedgehogs will soon be emerging from their annual winter hibernation. This year’s early spring could mean they are already out and about looking for food. Sadly, in the past decade alone we have lost over a half of our rural hedgehogs and a third from our towns and cities across the UK. Solid garden boundaries, tidier gardens and the intensification of agriculture are all to blame for this alarming decline. But there are ways in which you can help. You can make your garden or back yard more hedgehogfriendly by creating a hedgehog highway – cut a CD case-sized hole in your fence to enable hedgehogs to roam between

yours and your neighbours gardens and yards; Avoid using pesticides – hedgehogs are natural pest controllers; Provide nesting sites – logs, piles of leaves and wilderness areas make great places for hedgehogs to nest and hibernate; Let your grass grow a little wild – it’s an important home for hedgehog prey and finally, set up a feeding station with hedgehog food or meaty pet food and clean water.

As well as logging your hedgehog sighting at: hedgehogs.cumbriawildlifetrust. org.uk, share your photos and footage with Cumbria Wildlife Trust using the hashtag #CumbriaHedgehogs

Grange in Bloom Spring Open Gardens On Sunday 19th May, there will be several spring gardens open between 10am – 5pm. Situated in the area at the top of Risedale Hill, there will be both new and established gardens to view, with diverse and varied planting. There will be plant stalls and refreshments available during your visit and organisers hope that you will enjoy the gardens selected this year and support them in appreciating all the hard work put in by their owners. Tickets and the planned route can be bought in advance from Grange Information Centre at Victoria Hall at a cost of £5, or on the day for £6.

Looking upriver, turn right after bridge onto Mill Lane. After 100m turn right at small T-junction and then left, following river upstream next to some new houses. All that remains of the old mills is now ahead of you. Follow the pavement, still following course of the river. There’s a sturdy picnic bench up on the banks and steps down to a small pebble beach. You soon reach a stone building, dated 2015. This houses two turbines that generate enough electricity for 340 homes, powered by the river. Climb steps up into the woods and follow the riverside path upriver in and out of the woods for half a mile until it ascends towards a small road. 2. Cross road and turn right to join track behind wall. Through gate to follow the permissive path over the field with a view of eight wind

To me, April is a transitional month, as we move that little bit nearer to summer. It is usually a month of showers and wind, but never so predictable. Despite the unsettled weather, it is a good time for bird song as they are very busy singing their heads off, trying to attract a mate and tell all that they are available and may have a suitable territory. For many people, birdsong is just a noise from the countryside or their garden and it can be difficult to know which bird is making which noise, especially during the dawn chorus, when all the birds are competing with each other to

turbines ahead on Caton Moor. Further on, next to the path, three characterful wooden benches are perfectly placed for splendid views upriver, following the cycle/foot path staying on the north bank of the river, take steps down to path that continues upriver through fields. 3. After a mile you reach a Victorian waterworks bridge. Cross this and now follow river downstream all the way to Caton Lune bridge. Go under bridge and up past two wooden sculptures of Otters towards a road. Cross road and through steel gate to continue downriver. Following the sharp bend known as Crook O’Lune. The path enters woods, goes beneath another cycleway bridge, and ascends towards the road where there’s a sign for Gray’s Seat, the viewpoint for Turner’s painting. Continue following riverside path. Opposite the Halton hydro weir, ascend steps through woods and join cycleway back to former Halton station.

It can take many hours of practice and patience, as some are very similar to each other with only very subtle differences. You can get apps and cd’s to learn from, but it is no substitute for being outdoors and seeing the bird making the song or call. This becomes easier with practice and eventually, you can hear a bird and know what it is without seeing it. It is never 100% though, and I get it wrong too and some birds are notorious for catching you out. The jay is one of them as it is good at mimicking other birds. On the reserve, they have picked the knack of sounding like a buzzard. I was once being interviewed live by a radio station about local

wildlife, and I knew the presenter would ask me to identify a bird call, and not far away I could hear one but I had never heard it before. I was desperately trying to get a glimpse of it when the presenter asked me to identify it. Now I was panicking, but thankfully it showed itself to be a great tit, which has a very large vocabulary. An experienced birder once told me that if you can’t identify a call it is most likely to be a great tit.

There are lots of bird identification events that will help you out, with experienced guides to help you with bird song. Visit RSPB and Cumbria Wildlife Trust websites for more information. Tony Saunders, Hon. Reserve Manager, Brown Robin Nature Reserve.

An Easter message from Fr. Parker A Miracle Rally

Whilst Father Philip was engaged in the Alpha course at Milnthorpe, I, together with five parishioners experienced an interesting, beneficial and charismatic based North West Miracle Rally held at Our Lady’s Catholic High School in Preston.

The weekend was based on praise (excellent music ministry), prophecy, healing, Evangelisers’ and ‘The unconditional love of God’ by Father Chris Thomas, Damian Stayne and Marie a co-worker at Cor et Lumen Christi based at Chertsey and Wigton. On Sunday Bishop Paul was welcomed with song by a group

The following day, on Sunday morning, ‘Church went to Toast Church’, WOW! What a different worship service, compared to the Saturday Quiet morning.

It was lovely to share with the young people and their leaders, in the work they have been doing over the past weeks, joining with them to consider, ‘loving our neighbour’. After singing some of their jolly songs and working on the actions, we considered what and how we would like our neighbours to behave towards us. We made a paper chain, and then

of African ladies before celebrating mass during which commenting for a moment on his 15 years in Africa related a story of an African gentleman who pointed at the then Father Paul’s watch and said, ‘You Westerners have the watches, we Africans have the time!’...the ensuing mass only lasted three and a half hours! Our Sunday mass, needless to say, was not that long but it did conclude with a beautiful song and dance of thanksgiving performed by the African contingent. Bishop Paul joined in the singing with the African ladies. Somewhat different to the conclusion of mass at St. Charles. It was an eventful weekend with experiences of prophecy and healing, a very good music ministry and culminating in two hours of ‘Fire and Light’ a prolonged period of Adorating of the Blessed Sacrament, private prayer and prayers for

healing and much praise prayer and song. I do feel this is an important part of the ministry of the Church which can attract younger people. We do need to add to our long-held forms of liturgy, being prepared to step out in faith into new areas of prayer and devotion...I enjoyed and benefitted from it and I’m certain my parish companions, who had never experienced this form of prayer and praise were duly moved for the good. It is good to be penning a few words again. Who knows? Prepare well for Easter, certainly better than me at the moment! God Bless, Fr. watched a demonstration by the young people, (and one older gentleman), as they portrayed the parable of Jesus, ‘the Good Samaritan’ in a slightly different way. The chain of love and hope we had made was broken as the passers-by disregarded the plight of the traveller who fell among thieves, until a Samaritan came along, dressed his wounds and took him on his donkey for help. We joined with the young people, later to enjoy toast and tea, coffee or orange juice. Thank you, Toast Church, for inviting us to share with you. Then we settled down to the business of thinking about our future together with the URC Church. What do we want our joint church to be like? How can we reach out to our community? How can we offer friendship and Christian love to

FOOD & DRINK farmers to ensure a consistent supply of superb quality lambs.

When it comes to sourcing the perfect lamb joint for an Easter meal, Stuart’s recommendation is clear “Low and slow is the goal! For a really flavoursome joint of Lamb, I would opt for a slow roasted shoulder of hogget – nothing beats it!” ‘Hogget’ is the industry term for last years lambs, which carry more fat and flavour, lending themselves perfectly to the low and slow method. Stuart goes on to say, “We will have new season spring lamb in the shop by Easter, which is leaner and a more tender product, but it doesn’t have quite as much flavour as the Hoggets”. Pauline’s Slow Roasted Shoulder of Hogget with Garlic and Rosemary

A 3lb shoulder of Lamb on the Bone will feed four people / 4lb will feed six people. Cooking times are 25 mins per lb plus 25 mins for Medium, or 30 mins per lb plus 30 mins for Well Done. Ensure the lamb is room temperature before cooking Pre-heat your oven to 220°C/Gas 7

A family recipe to celebrate Easter with… Easter may still be a little while away but we’re already full of anticipation for the celebration of Spring and the bounties of seasonal produce that come with it.

Most of us enjoy sitting down to a big family meal at Easter and the Higginsons family are no different. Stuart and Pauline’s choice for the occasion is always a traditional, slow roasted shoulder of Lamb. “We’re lucky to live in one of the finest areas in the country for producing lamb” says Stuart, who works alongside local

Make some small 2-3 cm deep slits into the meat and stuff these with fresh garlic cloves and fresh rosemary sprigs. Drizzle the joint with olive oil or rub with butter Roughly chop 3 onions, 2 carrots and 3 sticks of celery and place into a roasting tin, resting the lamb on top. Cover the tin with foil. The chopped vegetables will make a nice gravy later

After 20 minutes, turn the oven down to 150°C/Gas 3 and let the lamb cook slowly for a further 2 hours. Remove the foil 30 minutes before the Lamb is due to come out Let the Lamb rest for 20-30 minutes before eating

Serve with crispy golden roast potatoes and spring greens We’d recommend a jar of Garlic Farm ‘Mint Sauce with a touch of Garlic’ to accompany the meat. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for our Easter specials and activities in-store!

Traditionally, lamb is the meat of choice at Easter. The arrival of Herdwick lamb in the Low Sizergh Barn farm shop is perfectly timed for celebratory gatherings of family and friends around the table. Our kitchen team has put together a recipe that brings out the depth, character, and flavour of the Herdwick joint, which is partnered with another of our favourite ingredients: black badger peas. Also known as Carlin peas, they have a heritage to rival the Herdwick’s and are a welcome Britishgrown additional to a very tasty plate of food.

Roast Herdwick Lamb with Black Badgers & Growing Well Spinach INGREDIENTS

Rub the lamb joint all over with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, cumin and coriander seeds. Place the joint in the bottom of a roasting tray with the onion, 4 of the garlic cloves and a few sprigs of rosemary. Roast for 30 minutes to seal the meat before adding cold water to the tray.

• Chicken stock

Continue roasting (15 minutes per lb for medium-rare, 20 minutes per lb for medium).

• 200g Hodmedod’s whole dried black badgers (soaked overnight)

Remove the joint from the tray and wrap in tin foil. Leave to rest on a plate for at least 30 minutes before carving.

• Herdwick lamb joint • Fresh Growing Well spinach

• 50g bacon lardons • 50g butter

• 1 onion (finely sliced)

• 2 shallots (finely diced)

• 5 cloves of garlic (lightly crushed) • 1 bay leaf

• 1 tbsp tomato puree

Sauté the shallots in half of the butter with the lardons and remaining garlic. Add the black badgers, bay leaf, tomato puree, and enough chicken stock to ensure the peas are covered. Simmer for 45 minutes and season with the parsley.

• ½ tsp coriander seeds

Wash the spinach and sauté it in the rest of the butter (until wilted). Season and add ground nutmeg.

• Sprigs of rosemary

Mix the spinach into the black badgers and serve with the lamb.

• ½ tsp cumin seeds

• ½ tsp ground nutmeg

Our March meeting didn’t disappoint - it even included samples of delicious cake! Lisa from Ginger Bakers, who are based at Plumgarths near Kendal, gave us a most interesting insight into her life leading up to starting the business and beyond. We were even let into the ‘secret’ of why she chose the name “Ginger Bakers” and it’s not because all their bakes contain the obvious spice! We then tasted a delicious tray bake with a history dating back to Lisa’s grandma and Westmorland pepper cake which was new to most of us. Our speaker for Thursday 25th April is Karen Hanks who is giving us an “Amusing talk from the ‘60’s and ‘70’s”. We meet in the Roman Catholic Church, Kents Bank Road at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome, for further details contact Shirley Chamberlain 015395 32342.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI

The March meeting featured a talk by Ruth Gibbons entitled “Eating well, feeling great”. The members thoroughly enjoyed the very informative and amusing talk which explained the value of the different food groups and also dispelled some of the assumptions about what comprises a healthy diet. She explained which foods belong in which groups and what percentage should, ideally, be part of a well-balanced diet. The next meeting is at 2pm Tuesday 2nd April. New members welcome. Please contact Wendy on 32902 or Carol on 32876

Grange Forum

A Members’ Challenge on February 12 saw four speakers talk for fifteen minutes on a subject of their own choosing. John Jackson explained the extreme privation endured by Everest mountaineers producing 288 fatalities to date. Linda Jepson spoke about her health problems over some years and treatment provided by National Health departments. Lionel Warner introduced us to a fraction of his soccer refereeing experiences - some tense, some amusing. Chris Wight, author of walking guides, took us from the Pennine Way to the circumnavigation of

This mental test educates and also proves how little most of us know. We share a challenging hour and a real social occasion. Alan and Ann Anderson, who produce this mammoth teaser, must dig deep to discover facts and figures which turn our brains inside out! Outings: Thursday 14th May - Silverdale Golf Club. Contact Philip Walker on 33256 Summer - Thursday 4th July. This takes us to Skipton, Keighley, and Howarth. The trip includes a canal and train journey and a visit to where the Bronte sisters lived. On 23 October Buddy - the Buddy Holly Story, Grange Theatre, Blackpool. Details for Summer outing/Buddy contact: Alan Anderson on Grange 33696.

Grange Soroptimists

The club met in March to review their project work and discuss future work. Five members attended the Victoria Hall event celebrating the refurbishment of the balcony seats of which the club sponsored two. Twelve members made up 2 teams at the Cartmel Village Hall Quiz and although we didn’t win a good time was had by all. Six members swam in the Kendal Swimathon and raised at least £465 for ShelterBox which provides equipment and tents to families in disaster areas. Members will be joining in the Rise against Hunger meal packing event at Cartmel Priory School on 13 April. Work on the Sensory garden continues and Singing for Memory sessions resume on 18th April at Allithwaite on a Thursday morning. Ring Isabel 36378 or Janice 58001 for further information and to book. Anyone interested in joining the club or getting further information on events or our work/ Singing for Memory sessions see our website www.sigbi.org/grangeover-sands/

Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society

Many members and a few visitors came to the March meeting to hear about Catching Tales, Fishing Stories from Morecambe Bay presented by Michelle Cooper of Morecambe Bay Partnership. She played extracts of sound recordings that have been gathered over the past 4 years. On the day of the talk, she had delivered the master discs containing the memories of about 60 people who have contributed about 150 to 200 hours of conversation to Lancashire Archives, Preston and another set will be deposited with Cumbria Archives, Barrow for long term preservation. Interviews have been conducted with fishing families around the Bay and in particular from Flookburgh, Morecambe and Sunderland Point. Under the headings of Across the Generations, Fishing Methods, Rivalry, Dangers, Wildlife and Nicknames we heard how skills were passed from generation to generation; using horses and how their replacement by tractors changed fishing; how to catch and sort shrimps; making nets; competitiveness and friendship between the fishermen; elephants bathing off Blackpool; and a record of some of the nicknames given to the fishermen. One lady also recounted her experiences of fishing. Next meeting, 4th April, is a talk about the Crossfield boatbuilding family and a 1912 yacht, The Severn, which has now been returned to Arnside.

Friends of Kents Bank Station

February and March have seen plenty of activity at Kents Bank Station. The long-awaited ticket machine has been

installed although work on the installation of the CCTV cameras and live train information screen is still ongoing. We held a very successful work meet on a Spring-like day at the end of February when around 20 members of the group turned up en masse to work on the garden plots and have a general tidy up. Thanks to everyone’s hard work the gardens are already brightening up the day for rail users and locals alike. Finally, we have postcards sized prints of the 2 lovely artwork boards, depicting birds commonly seen from the station, on sale at Grange Information Centre and other local businesses.

Grange Lecture Society

Travel photographer John Beatty returned on 12th February with another of his enthralling presentations ‘More Adventures in the Wild’. It consisted of material from recent visits to Antarctica, India, Alaska, Greenland, and Mongolia, but ended in his native Derbyshire. Particularly arresting was the sight of hundreds of walruses hauled up on a beach in Alaska and of nomadic Mongolian herdsmen hunting with their specially trained eagles. As usual John’s photography and accompanying commentary were outstanding. The final lecture of the season on 5th March was an illustrated presentation by garden historian Russell Bowes in which he expertly and wittily traced the life and career of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, who despite quite humble origins obtained appointments at numerous major English estates, including Stowe and Chatsworth, where he redesigned their grounds. His (for some) controversial work reflected a contemporary reaction against the formal, straight-lined approach to landscape gardening, and sought a more naturalistic look, although the processes involved, like the calculated positioning of trees and manipulating ground or water levels, produced landscapes which, however beautiful, had their own artificiality. At the preceding AGM Gill Mitchell was elected President for 2019-20. The new season of lectures begins on 8th October.

Grange & District Art Society

Members were flying high when Nick Henderson brought 5 of his wonderful birds of prey to our meeting at Allithwaite Community Centre. Members had access to these fine creatures for sketching and painting for the full 3 hours and they loved it. Birds on display included a Brown Wood Owl with deep chocolate colours and white detailing, a Tawny Owl of speckled appearance and a White-faced Scoops Owl, clearly recognisable by its tufts that

look like ears. Most nervous was a Barn Owl and stealing the show on the basis of age, size and noise was, “Boo”, a Eurasian Eagle Owl. Nick gave a presentation about the birds on display and an update on the activities of the registered charity. This included amendments to regulation relating to birds of prey and trends in society affecting their treatment by the public. Corio Raptors specialise in the care & rehabilitation of sick, injured and mistreated birds of prey. Miss Garrett Competition is on 18 April 2019 and the four topics are: Wind, Machinery, Reflections and Food. The acrylics workshop with Lynne Warburton is on 16th May. Those who prefer watercolours or oils may paint along in their chosen medium as last year.

Cartmel Village Society

The Cartmel Village Society, a charity founded in 1994 and dedicated to conserving Cartmel’s heritage as well as investing in its future, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. Following a legacy from resident Ann Rowbotham in 2009, the Society is able to support local projects to benefit the future of the beautiful village of Cartmel. Financial support for those projects has been in excess of £50,000 over the past five years. Some examples include: An ongoing digital history project, which films and narrates the memories of village residents together with recording significant local events e.g. the Magna Carta celebrations. Supporting the village Primary School with important IT equipment. Supporting thevillage Secondary School without door classroom equipment and internal exercise facilities. Initial support for the Cartmel in Bloom Group, when it was established and who now enhance and maintain the village’s environment through litter picking, floral displays and other activities. This has led to numerous local and national awards. In addition, the Society is the lead body working with the Parish & District Councils in the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan for the village which will provide guidelines for future developments within the village. cartmelvillagesociety@gmail.com

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild

The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 12th of March when we had a two-part meeting. In the morning we were stitching fun chocolates (non–fattening centres!) In the afternoon we had a talk from Jacky Cardy who showed us her work and explained the design and thought that went into it. She brought many samples of her work with felt and other fabrics which was very much appreciated by the members. Next month we are making Thread Bins in an effort to keep the workroom tidier. The next meeting is on Tuesday 9th of April at Holker Village Hall 10am-3.00pm. Visitors and new members are most welcome. If interested contact Anne Covell on 01539737049.

Grange Garden Society

The speaker at our February meeting, David Wilkinson, shared his expertise as a professional groundsman in his talk “Lawn Care Made Simple.” His comprehensive advice included the creation and maintenance of a traditional pristine lawn, an informal wildflower meadow, and the ubiquitous area of grass that comprises an element in many gardens. In a question and answer session David explained how modern bio-friendly practices could achieve good results.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP By using drought –resistant grasses and “worm-friendly” treatments it is possible to have a good-looking , healthy lawn without cost to the environment. The next Society meeting, the first of our Spring/Summer season, will be on Friday April 12th at 7.30pm in the URC Hall, Kent’s Bank Road. Cartmel and District Flower Club

Cartmel and District Flower Club again welcomed a favourite demonstrator John Dalton. It’s always good to see John, he is very generous with his flowers and tips, and we always enjoy his sense of humour. His demonstration on March 17th entitled ‘It’s Spring’ was delightful, full of colour and fun. We also look forward to our summer outing to his beautiful garden in July. Our next meeting in Cartmel Village Hall on April 15th at 2pm will be a workshop entitled “Spring Landscape “ a list of requirements for the two arrangements is available. Visitors and new members very welcome.

The committee would love your input on how the Society should evolve in its 53rd year and beyond! Finally, it has been suggested that we do not all take a rest during the summer months and that we carry on carrying on! A new series of summer workshops and events have been planned to keep everyone on their toes. Planning has already started for the Annual exhibition 2019 and our Autumn/ Spring programme 2020. ADVERTORIAL

The profitable sin of smoking

I DON’T HAVE ANY RELATIVES, Making a Will SO WHY DO I NEED A WILL? According to a list held by the Treasury Solicitor, there were 327 deaths in the UK in 2018 where there were no persons entitled to inherit the estate. By 5 March 2019, there are already 12 estates in the UK which have been identified by H M Treasury as having no identifiable beneficiaries. Where someone dies without any surviving relatives entitled to inherit, their estate passes ‘Bona Vacantia’ to the Crown. If you die without a will your estate will be distributed in accordance with legal rules called the Intestacy Rules. In short, it will be divided between your closest blood relatives whether you want them to benefit or not. These may be relatives you are fond of but equally may be relatives you have no relationship with or have never even met. If you have no traceable blood relatives your estate will pass to the Crown. If you would rather avoid leaving the distribution of your estate to chance, making a will is vital. Even if you do not have any family members to speak of, you may have friends or charities who are important to you. free initial consultation noitatlusnoca laiwill tini eeryou f By making choose who inherits your assets fixed fees eef dexif and in what sproportions. home visits available

The UK bans on smoking in enclosed public places led to renewed buyer interest in collections of smokingrelated items.

Pipe smoking paraphernalia heads the list of desired collectables. Perhaps it’s no surprise that some individual pipes are worth hundreds of pounds - they are the oldest traditional form of smoking and had many fictional and reallife characters championing the hobby (Sherlock Holmes, Popeye, Gandalf, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, and Albert Einstein to name but a few). Smokers cabinets, cigar humidors and

cigarette cases are also creating interest with collectors, along with high-quality cigarette lighters. Tobacco jars are again interesting pewter, ceramic or wooden versions. Finally, the materials used to market these products (prior to the advertising

ban) continue to achieve good prices, particularly vintage enamel signs and display stands. Smoking trivia: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never mentioned that Sherlock smoked a calabash when he created him in 1887.

Quaker and Quilts

300-year old bedspread of King James II on display For the first time in its history, the 17th-century Goan bedspread of King James II went on public display at Sizergh Castle. The Indian bedspread is made from satin, with gold thread stitched into an intricate design of mythical creatures, and was gifted to the Strickland family of Sizergh in the 1600s as a thank you for their loyalty. Sir Thomas and Winifred Strickland were considered close friends of the King and Queen having accompanied them in 1688 to France in exile. Sizergh’s collection includes many of the gifts which the family received in gratitude, including a lock of the King’s hair and the Queen’s collection of Imari porcelain. The exhibition space allows visitors to learn more about how the delicate fabric is cared for and a specialist textile conservator will be working on the bedspread over the coming months.

The castle will also be shining a light on another of its fabric items in the collection - a complete set of five 17th-century Antony and Cleopatra Flemish tapestries. Later this year, the first tapestry in the set, ‘The Meeting of Antony and Cleopatra’, will travel to Belgium for urgent specialist treatment to restore its colour and condition. The five wall hangings depict Plutarch’s (and subsequently Shakespeare’s) famous stories and are the largest surviving weaving of this series in the world. The treatment for this one tapestry will cost £77,000 in total so the castle will be raising funds through raffle tickets and donations throughout the year. The house is open Tuesday - Sunday 12 - 4pm from 16th March - 27 October and is free to enter for National Trust members. The gardens, shop and café are open 7 days a week.

Swarthmoor Hall is visited by people from all over the world, as the place where Quakerism coalesced out of the wider dissenter movement in the turbulent seventeenth century. From there Quakers spread worldwide, hastened on their way by religious persecution in England and Wales. The historic Hall has an excellent collection of local seventeenthcentury furniture, but one of the few pieces that were actually used by that dynamic and defiant Quaker founder, Margaret Fell, is a heavilycarved bed, in an upstairs bedroom which would also have served as a reception room. Ten years ago local Quakers sewed a colourful quilt of triangular patches for this bed.

She hoped this would keep them occupied on the long voyage, give them

In 2012 the tea garden in front of the café was laid out with little triangular flower beds in the same Thomas Fell bed with quilt, Swarthmoor Hall pattern as the gifted quilt. Grange and District U3A

U3A held its Enrolment Morning in the Victoria Hall in March which gave members old and new the opportunity to learn about our Interest Groups and other activities. Over forty groups operate within U3A and we are always looking for new ideas from members about what subjects or activities

WE’RE SO EXCITED, WE’RE WETTING OUR PLANTS!

they would like to see. A few months ago a new “Knitting and Stitching” group was launched and now meets every week in the library. As well as knitting the members work on a range of other skills. Embroidery, appliqué, dry felting and even the use of a small loom are included. Some of the members are very experienced and highly skilled but beginners are welcome. People bring along their work, share their expertise and resources and chat about what they do. So very much in the U3A ethos they learn from one another; “those who teach shall learn and those who learn shall also teach”. Our very latest group, only launched in March, is the “Art Appreciation” Group. The meetings for 2019 are a mixture of gallery visits, both local and regional, with ‘at home’ sessions in the WiFi enabled supper room of Cartmel Village Hall. The ‘at home’ sessions are ‘hands on’ and cover some of the basics of an art appreciation course and include some preparation and background for the visits. The first of these is to the Armitt Museum

and Abbott Hall, Kendal as both these galleries have works and exhibitions relevant to the topic of Art in Exile with particular reference to German refugees. The Abbott Hall exhibition is part of nationwide celebrations of the people, who after fleeing from the Nazis, made significant contributions to Britain’s culture, and it coincides with the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War Two. Other visits in the pipeline include the Rennie Mackintosh exhibition, “Rembrandt on Screen”, the Lady Lever Art Gallery and Blackwell.

All of our activities depend on willing volunteers; without them we can achieve nothing. Each group depends on a Co-ordinator and members who are prepared to contribute whether that is by giving a talk, arranging a visit or leading an outdoor activity. Sometimes a group can no longer continue because of the retirement of a key co-ordinator, some of whom serve for many years. Our Family and Social History Group is currently not meeting because of this, but new volunteers have come forward to sustain our Geology and Landscape and Social Cycling Groups. Our AGM is on 16th April in the Victoria Hall when new committee members are elected. As a registered charity it is vital that U3A has officers and committee members to take responsibility and generally organise the affairs of the organisation. We have a great team but we are always on the lookout for new members. The AGM will be followed as usual with a talk from one of our own members; John Parker will tell us his “Story of the Ordnance Survey”. A further opportunity to find out about Grange U3A will be on 30th May (10.00 am to 12.00 noon) when there will be a “drop in” coffee session at the Methodist Church Hall.

More details of U3A’s many activities and groups can be found on the Grange and District U3A website at www.u3asites. org.uk/grange; at Grange Library and on posters around the town.

Dear Editor, Godspell

Foot tapping, clapping, and I suspect some surreptitious joining in with well-known melodies, added to the atmosphere of another community and friends‘rehearsal rendition of the 1970’s rock musical ‘Godspell’ at Cartmel Priory. Following the success of ‘Rock Nativity’, ‘Joseph’ and ‘Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo’, Sue Batchelor (a member of the Priory Choir) decided we should spread our wings a little this year and use our newly created West End Space to set our story in the round. A large, enthusiastic audience arrived on a miserable Sunday

Dear Editor,

I moved to Grange a couple of years ago and enjoy reading my Grange Now magazine each month. It has lots of interesting articles. Being an NHS community physiotherapist I was particularly interested and pleased to see the article in the February issue “Take positive steps to avoid trips & falls”. Our team works with many older people and we focus on encouraging them to be more active. This can be through exercise, walking, dancing, Tai Chi or even just using the stairs instead of the lift. It’s so important to keep moving and stay active

I have had a meeting with Tim Farron, and he has contacted Stagecoach who would like a meeting with us in May 2019 which is wonderful news. For now, let’s keep a positive attitude for a reasonable outcome for us all.

afternoon and were offered the Priory’s version of St Matthew’s Gospel with a narrator, songs such as Day by Day and Turn Back oh Man together with dance and mime from our Primary School children. Oh, yes, and in the interval wafers and wine….gums!

Thanks go to Sue for her imaginative ideas and to all those who participated, but particularly to John Shippen for his patience in rehearsal, Adrian Self (Keyboard) Mark Payne (guitar) Martin Chadderton(drums) and the stage crew. It was fun, and we hope those who came enjoyed it as much as we did. Mary Iveson

to ensure your muscle mass and exercise tolerance is maintained. The exercises in the article which can be found in the Age UK booklet are similar to evidence-based effective exercises used by “Later Life Training”; so are really good. I would urge locals to make the most of their nearby exercise classes or walking groups and stay as active as possible. There are many chair based exercise classes, but we need more classes that cover exercising in standing like the ones in the Age UK booklet. Yours sincerely, Linsey Fairhurst.

FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE

Good news for buyers and sellers

Spring approaches with haste and, as the days get longer and we see the introduction of some much-needed colour, the traditionally more buoyant property market arrives. Here at Poole Townsend, we are seeing increased levels of property sales already and a recent report from the Rightmove price index has suggested that there has never been a better time to buy or sell. The report suggests that property is at its most affordable level thanks to wage growth significantly exceeding increases in ‘for sale’ property values. According to Rightmove, the average annual asking price rise is just 0.2% when compared to an average annual wage growth at a rate of 3.4%. This means that buyer affordability is improving at the fastest rate against average new seller asking prices since 2011. The availability of cheaper mortgage rates means that if buyers have that all-important deposit then they are being given a leg up onto the property ladder. The good news is not just restricted to buyers either. All of the Northerly regions covered by Rightmove have seen property price increases compared to last year, with 6 of the 7 recognised regions posting increases in excess of 2%. This also falls into line with Poole Townsends annual figures, which have showed a 3% year on year increase in property prices across the South Lakes and Furness. With plenty of proceedable purchasers looking at property and favourable market conditions for Northern agents and sellers, most agents are reporting an active market. Price sensitivity still has a large role to play in marketing property but by speaking to a local expert, you can be guided as to the best way to market your property for the best results. To take advantage of the market as a property owner or to find your next home due to improved affordability as a buyer why not come and speak to one of our property experts in your local Poole Townsend office.

Carpets are the filters for our homes They trap the dust and other airborne allergens that would otherwise be floating around in the air we breathe.

Whilst regular vacuuming of our carpets removes most of these allergens from the surface, over time, some of this stuff gets deep rooted within the pile of the carpet and only a professional deep clean will get rid of it.

For a cleaner and healthier home, make it a point to regularly have your carpets and rugs deep cleaned. While it’s a chore to do it yourself, deep cleaning of your carpets is something that should never be neglected.

For best results, you can always seek help from a professional carpet cleaning company like Revive Carpet Cleaning. We make thorough carpet cleaning fast and easy at very reasonable prices. Carpets are usually dry within 30 minutes of cleaning and we move your furniture too.

The photos show an example of what we can achieve, the first one was taken part way through the clean to show the difference as the job progressed, the second, the final result. We hope you agree that there is an amazing improvement.

We also clean upholstery, including leather.
