Rob and Sharon Sanbrook and their daughter, Farrah run Fish over Chips in Grange and the family are always heavily involved with the annual Christmas Day dinner event run by Friends at Christmas. The whole group was devastated when the event had to be cancelled due to Covid-19. In an act of incredible generosity, Farrah Sanbrook contacted Grange Now to say that although they can’t have their usual get together, a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings and a pud would be provided to those who want it. Not only that but it’s free of charge. A team of volunteers are ready and waiting to deliver the meals to those who can’t collect it. Farrah told Grange Now, “We want to get the word out to as many people as possible that we are doing this. People and businesses have already contributed towards the food and people have offered to deliver. Joanne Godby from The Spar along with Paul have offered to deliver meals to Hampsfell Grange, Grayrigg Court and Strand Court. The staff at Heydays Care are collecting meals for

Investment Matters By Jason Crane APFS CFPTM ‘Don’t put all your eggs in one basket’ is a common saying, but in no other area does this resonate more than in Financial Planning. The key to successful Financial Planning is to ensure that you hold a diverse spread of asset types. Other than Cash and Property; two of the main asset types are Equities and Fixed Interest Securities, such as Corporate Bonds (I wrote about Bonds in July’s edition). Equities/Shares; investing in shares means that you own a share of that company and therefore receive a share of the profits by way of dividend. Dividend income is often seen as a hedge against inflation; in theory, if revenue and costs rise with inflation, so will the profits. Consistent and rising dividends should mean a rise in the share price, ensuring investors benefit from both income and capital growth. Conversely, dividends are by no means guaranteed and the value of shares can fall as well as rise so investors may get back less than they invest. The pandemic we are going through has put pressure on both asset prices and dividend distributions, though as I write, positivity appears to be returning. Corporate Bonds are essentially loans to companies
in return for a fixed rate of interest; the loan being repayable on a fixed date in the future. Before being repaid by the company, Corporate Bonds can be bought and sold on the stock market with the price very much determined by supply and demand, affected by interest rates, inflation and the financial strength of the company. In terms of risk, this type of investment sits below shares as the company simply needs to have enough cash to service the debt, whereas shareholders require the company to make reasonable profits to pay a dividend. Although this type of investment is considered lower risk than shares, they do have an element of risk as some companies will default; in addition to this, currently we are seeing high prices being paid for this type of asset so whilst it will provide a regular income it may produce a capital loss when the maturity date arrives, thus increasing the potential risk of what has traditionally been seen as a ‘steady’ type investment. Working with a Financial Planner will help you select the most appropriate assets and ensure your finances remain focused on your long term goals.

At this time, Mick and Jean Malkin would normally be getting the young performers ready for opening night of the pantomime but like so many things this had to be cancelled. However, nothing thwarts the might of our talented youngsters and Mick and Jean contacted Grange Now to tell us about their money raising online performance, “The youngsters from Grange Pantomime are usually getting so excited, trying on costumes, putting the final touches to their singing and dancing and perfecting their lines, but, as we are all aware, Covid has disrupted everything which we call ‘normal’. So they are practising in their own homes and getting ready to show their talents to all who would like to watch them. There will be a virtual performance on Facebook on Friday 4th December at 7pm.
They have already performed a virtual Christian Aid concert, so thanks to the technical abilities of Paul and Amos Rand, they are nearly ready to try to raise some money for the charities which the Panto’ usually supports - i.e. World Vision, which funding helps towards the health, welfare and education of two young children in India and Albania, as well as the local ‘Jigsaw’ children’s hospice at Carlisle. If you go to the Grange Pantomime Facebook page all information and viewing will be there. there’s even a ‘Panto moment’ for you to join in during a ‘It’s behind you scene’! Please support these children if you can. We need all the fun and laughter we can manage this Christmas time, and, with God’s blessing, it will be a first for Grange Pantomime. Next year - ‘Peter Pan’ hurrah!!

It has now been nearly six months since we opened our office on Main Street,during this time we have carried out many different tasks from feeding a parrot to delivering furniture to Scotland which we have enjoyed very much,and have over 600 likes and followers on facebook with some fantastic reviews so thank you for all your support. I have personally found it very humbling starting this business and realising how much it means to people to have someone go in for a chat or to help with something however small.I visit a gentleman once a week only for a couple of hours but you build up a friendship, now he is in hospital and this has proved very stressful for his wife and all concerned and certainly makes you appreciate what you have and how difficult life can be at times. Staff are very important to me so thank you to them and can i say a special thank you to louise who has had a very difficult year and wish you a much more positive 2021.
Lucy Dickonson, a 23 year old farmer from Lane Ends Farm, Haverthwaite has just been awarded the coveted title of Farmers Apprentice 2020. Lucy beat off stiff competition from nine other finalists and won, not only the title, but £10,000 in prize money. Lucy has, by her own admission, always lacked confidence in herself. She told Grange Now, “Everyone was shocked when I said I was going and nobody expected me to go through with it. I was going away from home for a week to bootcamp with no-one I know so it was quite amazing for me. Bootcamp was mentally draining and it
was hard being surrounded by cameras. I’m really glad I did it and I’ve made some amazing new friends and my confidence has had a real boost.” Lucy has loved farming from a very young age and two years ago she took control of the family’s flock of sheep. Now she has the prize money, she now hopes to rent some land of her own and get some cattle. Lucy has been involved with Cartmel Young Farmers for ten years and is currently their secretary. The future is certainly looking bright for Lucy and her three year old son, Arnold. Well done Lucy!
Thank you to my family for your support and making THE DOBSONS what it is today. George for being such a fantastic son who gives 110% to everything he does despite working with his dad everyday. Connie for helping with all the social media whilst being at university studying,learning to drive,having a part time job,numerous volunteering jobs etc etc you have been great. Evie for challenging my parenting skills to the maximum thank you for your help and support. I know I can rely on a great babysitter. Mary for your support with the takeaways and always having a big smile on your face however stressful the evening can be. You are an absolute pleasure. Karen and I will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary in January. During this time we have had four children and three businesses which has brought many challenges but her love and support has never wavered and I couldn’t have wished for a more loving wife and mum. We are all very lucky to have you in our lives. Following the success of their event in the summer, Grange-over-Sands Community Foodshare is planning an Activity Club on Saturday 19th December.
The event will take place during 12 - 3pm in Victoria Hall, Grange.. Organiser Rahina Borthwick told Grange Now, “We’ll have lots of fun doing sports, Christmas crafts with Ragtag Arts, music and it will all be followed by a delicious surplus food lunch and a foodshare from Fareshare Preston. “Every child will go home with the ingredients for 14 lunches and a few festive treats too. There is no charge.” Rahina went on to say that the ‘14 lunches of Christmas’ are also available for anyone
who asks. She said, “We have a never-ending tsunami of surplus food from FareShare and Asda, Kendal will be supplying Waste Not Want Not in Cartmel with Christmas lunch bags and any of the eight local Foodclubs are happy to help. “Please ask, don’t be worrying about feeding yourself or your family this Christmas. The importance of staying healthy We’re all aware of the extra challenges that living through the Covid-19 pandemic has placed upon us and our health, particularly in relation to our physical, emotional and social health.
In November, the Office for National Statistics showed that Britain had recorded the highest levels of acute loneliness since the start of the pandemic. This is just one of the key challenges that many of us (but particularly, the older population) will likely face to our health and wellbeing during winter. Reach out to others who may be isolated in any way you can - a phone call, a letter or even arranging to meet for a walk. This last point is about looking out for others and spreading kindness. We saw examples of this taking place during Kind Cumbria Day on 13 November. It could be as simple as taking a slice of cake to a neighbour, picking up shopping for an older relative or sending a card to a friend. New Collection Point for Barrow Foodbank Volunteers who collect donations for Barrow Foodbank have contacted Grange Now with the wonderful news that The Lantern Charity shop in Allithwaite is the new collection point. A wonderful team of volunteers are happy to take the goods between 10.30am and 3.30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The goods will then be taken to Barrow for distribution.
Items most needed include: Handwash, hand gel, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shower gel, deodorant, breakfast cereals, soup, pasta, tice, pasta sauce, potatoes/instant mash, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits,
UHT/longlife milk and fruit juice, sponge puddings and snacks. Tinned goods are also needed including: tinned beans, tinned meat, tinned fish, tinned vegetables, tinned tomatoes, tinned fruit, tinned rice pudding.

We are a nation of dog-lovers who consider their pets to be part of the family. That being said, It is rarely something that comes to the forefront of your mind when drawing up a new will. Most pet owners do not think of their furry friends as a personal possession, but they are treated this way when it comes to post-death arrangements. Did you know that you can name a family member or friend in your will to take care of your pets after you die? You may like to also leave that person a sum of money to care for your pet, or as a thank you. Alternatively, you may decide to leave your pet to a particular shelter or charity so that your pet can be rehomed. If you do not include any arrangements for your pet in your will, it is likely that they will pass to whoever inherits your residuary estate, which may not always be something you wish to happen. Make your will today to ensure that all of your loved ones, including your pets, are taken care of.

On the Grapevine The pandemic hasn’t stopped us. With zoom productions a plenty, we are regularly joined by members from the former Flookburgh Opera/Drama, Cartmel Players, some from the Lancaster Footlights and others from the wider community theatre network of Kendal and the Lyth Valley and vice versa. Keeping in touch is as vital as it is enjoyable and we will continue until we can return to the Victoria Hall stage. We miss performing on

Farewell Concert from Charles Edmondson
On Wednesday 16 December at 11 am. Charles Edmondson will give his “Farewell” Concert at St Paul’s Church, Grange-over-Sands. For the past 66 years he has been a church organist and choirmaster in churches and chapels throughout the land, of the which the last eight have been at St Paul’s. Aged 14, his first post was in a Baptist Church in his home town of Bradford for which he received an annual honorarium of £12. Charles, who now lives in Kendal, is retiring on 31 December from St Paul’s but hopes to continue giving organ recitals at a few local venues. During his time at St Paul’s, Charles will have given 32 mid-week recitals and
concerts and last year he oversaw the complete restoration and refurbishment of the organ, giving the re-opening recital last December on his 80th birthday. Covid 19 restrictions are in force in the church, ensuring safe distancing Admission to the Concert on 16 December is free with a retiring collection and the varied programme will include music performed on the piano and organ from Austria, France and Holland with an English conclusion.

Flookburgh CofE Primary Our Children in Need fundraising event was certainly a colourful affair this year! This year, we decided to use the universally known symbol of Hope, the rainbow, to create an ‘Explosion of Colour’ with all of our children and staff, dressed in bright colours, creating a beautiful, animated, rainbow on our school field which we were able to film from above – it looks wonderful from the air so, please take a look at our Facebook page. A huge thank you to all of our families and community for their brilliant support, as always, for the monies

A small school who thinks BIG and acts green As a school, our responsibility to protect our environment and make our school as sustainable as possible has always been a key part of our values and ethos. Over a number of years, we have undertaken projects to reduce our energy consumption and minimise our carbon footprint, as such the building has become part of the education we offer the children. Wherever possible

Over the last few years, we have been working hard to develop our Music provision at Flookburgh School and worked in partnership with Cumbria Music Hub to ensure that our children experience high-quality Arts provision. So, we are very proud to have achieved the Music Award this year in recognition of the high-quality music education we provide in our school and just wanted to say a well done to all of the children and staff team!
we have used natural and/ or sustainable materials and renewable technologies, such as locally sourced timber, lambswool and hemp insulation, recycled plastics and an air-sourced heat pump in the building improvements. In the past year, we have had a really push on our BIG ideas and made significant investments for the future. We have installed a 24.8KW Solar PV system on the roof, fitted LED lighting throughout the building, and over the
summer, our most ambitious project to date, a ground source heat pump to replace our oil-fired heating system - this involved drilling 10 boreholes each 100 metres deep! All of this has given a new life to a school that was built as a ‘temporary’ structure back in the 1920’s and where little had changed until 12 years ago. What a long way we have come!
Cartmel Priory CE School The first half term was fairly quiet, given the new restrictions on what we are able to do, but it was a relief to get back into school and be able to reassure parents and students that we are here to support them as we continue to live this strange life that we are adapting to. We can’t accommodate all the extra-curricular activities and events that we normally would but we are promoting student successes on our Facebook page. Year 8 students produced some amazingly eruptive volcanoes which, with a little help from some baking 14
soda, which created an explosive display. Year 7’s have produced colour wheel collages which look extremely effective and made very colourful displays for the class walls. Years 10/11 made moulds from shells and casted copper into them as part of an art project and we introduced our new Equestrian team, with 6 of our students and their ponies now training weekly with a view to participating in regional competitions. The school is always looking to support opportunities and this is an exciting and very different sport to our normal curricular activities.

Our Art department held a Zentangle Pumpkin competition – all the entries were brilliant and our staff found it very difficult to choose the eventual winners. We have continued to support charities this term through our non-uniform days, including Guide Dogs for the Blind. Our Year 10 students have been
practising their assignments for the Rock School music course, still determined to continue to promote their music prowess despite the current restrictions. We’re heading towards the festive season and continue to showcase the school and the incredibly talented young people we have here.
Allithwaite C of E Primary This term Snowy Owls have been reading Funny Bones by Allan Ahlberg and have been inspired to learn about their bones and other parts of the body. They made a link with a real farmer in Lincolnshire called Farmer Kitty and have been learning about life on a mixed farm. Tawny Owls have also been studying the body in science and have created their own body tabards where they labelled all the parts of the body. They are busy creating their own superhero comic strips in English and will be acting out these stories in class. In Science, Barn Owls have been learning about forces and created their own fair tests to investigate which surfaces had the greatest friction. They are continuing with their recycling and pollution theme, and have studied One Plastic Bag by Isatuou Ceesay. Eagle Owls have been
thinking about Remembrance and WW1 and have written descriptive pieces about life during the war. Recently, the Eagle Owls received an exciting letter from the author J K Rowling. In Science, Eagle Owls have been learning about keeping their heart healthy and have devised their own Joe Wicks workouts. They have used a virtual T-shirt to follow the blood around the body. Thanks to the PTA and generous donations our new playground equipment is now in place.
Lindale CofE Primary We have had a jampacked start to our second half term at Lindale School! Many of our families have taken part in Boxes of Hope Cumbria this year with 20 shoe boxes donated so far. On the 11th, we held our Remembrance service where the children read poetry and prayers, we had a 2 minute silence and laid crosses to remember the soldiers. We raised money for Children in Need by dressing up, bringing in change to decorate Pudsey and our Pudsey colouring competition. The children also had lots of fun doing Children in Need activities in their classes. As well as all of this, Reception have been reading the Princess and the Pea which inspired the children to make crowns and build castles and act out the story. Year 1 and 2 have been enthused by their book Lila and the Secret of Rain. They looked up the geographical

features of Kenya and made 3D models of the landscape. Year 3 and 4 have been investigating magnets in Science and have enjoyed a range of experiments revolved around this. Year 5 and 6 took part in Parliament Week. They had an online parliament workshop and enjoyed an online Q & A session with Tim Farron; all of the children came up with excellent questions to ask and they have learnt lots!

A trip to Hadrian’s Wall
Covid precautions have made it an unusual Autumn Term for all schools, but at Cartmel we haven’t let them get in the way of our learning and fun activities. Children, teachers and parents have all responded brilliantly to the new way of life, catching up on progress where needed and creating a very important sense of normality at a difficult time for everyone. Recent highlights have included a trip for older children to Vindolanda and Hadrian’s Wall. It was an excellent way to understand Roman history and ways of life, and gave children the chance to brandish their toy swords from the top of the Wall’s defences!
It wasn’t possible to have our usual Armistice Day poppy sale this year, so children set about making their own felt versions instead. We have also been raising funds for Children In Need with a nonuniform day and virtual duck race, and contributing to the Children of Hope Shoeboxes appeal. Coronavirus sadly means we will also miss our traditional School Nativity in Cartmel Priory, but children are now hard at work on a virtual performance instead, and we will be finding other ways to celebrate. Everyone at the School wishes you a very merry Christmas and a happy 2021.

quite visible and it is estimated that thousands of square feet can be under one footprint. It is constantly on the move searching for nutrients and exchanging other nutrients with almost all living things on the planet.
In November I went for my daily walk around the reserve and as I entered the woodlands I got a strong smell of the Mycelium or Fungi. It doesn’t happen very often but sometimes it can be very strong or quite subtle and I think it depends on the weather but it was a good season for fungi last year too. Mycelium are the mass branches of filaments called hyphae and are the unseen part of fungi as they exist underground. I am not an academic or a mycologist, however over the years I have seen and read bits about it and it is truly astonishing stuff. It is difficult to describe but I will try. I am actually writing this whilst in the woods next to an Ash tree that came down many years ago and I have observed its slow decay over this time and it is as if different fungi have been waiting in line to get their nutrients from it and further help its decay and I expect to see others over time. The mycelium is a network of living tentacles under ground and can be microscopic or

Anyway, December is also the last month in the calendar year and I’m sure even more than last year we’ll all be glad to see the end of this one, who knows what next year will bring but we should all be optimistic, at least until January the first. They are the garbage disposal of the world as they break down dying or dead matter, but they also give new life by releasing the nutrients to other life forms too. We only see a tiny part of this gigantic living organism, its fruiting bodies, the fungi in all their strange and wonderful shapes, sizes and colours. They also have many uses too, such as clothing, medicines and even reducing pollution. It is also a delicate organism too, and susceptible to damage quite easily through physical harm and the use of fertilisers and, unfortunately, takes many years to return. There is a part of the reserve where no wild flora will grow, only rank grasses due to fertiliser being put down many years ago which would have killed off much of it as well as enriching the soil too much as well. It is probably one of the most important organisms on earth as it binds everything
together and without it the natural waste would not decompose. I think in Ancient woodlands especially they have evolved with all the other associated species within that ecology and therefore can also be classed as ancient living organisms, and should therefore be highly respected. As mentioned earlier, we only see the fruiting bodies of the mycelium, which I
think fascinate most people and some are very tasty too. So next time you are in the countryside and see fungi, just remember all the network of filaments under your feet. Merry Christmas everyone! Enjoy the tranquility of the Soroptimist Sensory Garden
so imagine our surprise and delight to receive a certificate from the RHS in recognition of the work we are doing for our community. This has motivated us to carry on improving the garden and we look forward to happier times next year when we hope to complete the planned refurbishment.
When the first lockdown eased we returned to working in the sensory garden in June and found six months without attention had wreaked havoc.

Great news for Grange in Bloom What a strange year it has been, but as lockdown eased The Grange in Bloom Group were delighted to return to gardening at the station each Tuesday afternoon, social distancing of course. We have just received some wonderful news. We have been one of the Co-ops chosen charities this past year and have raised just under £3,000 an amazing
amount. Many, many thanks to the Co- op and to local residents who supported us. We have already used some of the money to have a railing erected by the steps into the garden, designed and created by Philip Dalton. In the next few weeks we hope to have a paved path to link the gardens to the road, and next year a new metal sculpture erected on an old tree stump. During the past year we have
been fortunate to have 3 new enthusiastic gardeners so are able to work on new areas. Recently we have cleared the overgrown shrubs at the entrance to the station forecourt which has greatly improved the visibility as you drive into the station. This area will be planted in the spring with low growing plants and then pebbled. A path opposite the bus stop has been re-surfaced and edged with logs and a fernery
created at the entrance from the road. Our 3 new members also weeded and dug over the border by Pig Lane toilets, planted bulbs, and edged it with forget-me-nots. Look and Listen for Wildlife this Winter around Morecambe Bay Morecambe Bay Partnership is asking dog walkers to help save the birds of the Bay by remembering to ‘Stop, Look and Listen for wildlife’ before letting dogs off the lead on the coast. Morecambe Bay is one of the best places in the UK to see wildlife over the winter months. Around 210,000 birds flock to our shores from their arctic breeding grounds to spend the winter on the shores of the Bay. When they arrive, they really need to conserve their energy or they will perish. With such a busy coast, the birds are struggling to get all the rest they need. People and dogs are the most 18
common causes of birds being disturbed from roost sites. Birds use up to twelve times more energy when disturbed to the point of taking flight, and if they can’t land again they will begin to use up the fat reserves which they need to keep warm against the winter winds. If they lose too much energy, they won’t be able to survive. These birds have a long, cold winter ahead of them. Those living beside the coast will be familiar with the freezing winds and torrential rain that batter the coast through the winter. To survive this, our coastal birds must spend all of their time either feeding or resting to build up and retain

the energy reserves which will allow them to survive through the winter. ALLITHWAITE AND CARTMEL PARISH COUNCIL (A&CPC) The Parish council meeting to be held on the 16th November was cancelled due to the clerk testing positive for Covid-19. The date and time of the next meeting will be displayed on the parish noticeboards and website. At the meeting held on the 14th October it was agreed to set up a Finance Planning Group to allow councillors sufficient time to consider and discuss the options and agree project leads and timescales. This will also permit the new Parish Clerk/Responsible Finance Officer to review the current finances. The PC received a £10k grant from SLDC. It was agreed that Cartmel Playground, Allithwaite Park (KGV), and Pump Track receive £1k each with the remaining £7k held in reserve towards a Covid-19 related hardship fund. A draft proposal for the council to move towards Internet/Electronic Banking was agreed and the Internet Banking Procedure and Policy would be adopted by the Council. A copy of the minutes of meetings and agenda are published on the parish website. EMERGENCY CONTACT NUMBERS The following numbers can be used 24 hours a day, seven days a week in an emergency.
CUMBRIA PODIATRY SERVICE REVIEW The podiatry service run by University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust (UHMBT) provides a number of services which could be delivered outside the NHS. Morecambe Bay Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) with UHMBT has been exploring options for changing the service to ensure that patients with high medical and/or podiatric needs can be seen appropriately and also that the needs of people with low-level needs are still met. GREENDALES - ALLITHWAITE Over a sustained period a number of resident have had concerns with regard to foliage and bushes at the entrance to Greendales. Since planting there has been no land management of the area apart from regular grass cutting. The Parish Council after contacting the Managing Director with regard to residents’ concerns the trees, bushes and overhanging foliage has been cut back, which has now enhanced the Greendales entrance with the residents happy re the outcome.

ALLITHWAITE ORCHARD AND MEADOW The PC has been given a small grant by Peoples Trust for Endangered Species which will purchase 8 replacement or new varieties. Trees have been ordered from the PTES preferred supplier and are due for delivery soon. The trees have been paid for by PTES.

ALLITHWAITE COMMUNITY CENTRE The boundary fence on Quarry Lane has been completed and shrubs will shortly be planted along the fence. Activities inside and out have been suspended due to the current lockdown but will, on the 2nd December within Covid-19 Regulations, re-open. All groups have to submit their own Risk Assessment to the management committee before any activity takes place.
SOUTHLAKELAND CLIMATE CHANGE In February 2019 South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) declared a climate emergency - its Council Plan committing the council to “working to achieve a carbonneutral South Lakeland” by 2030.
KING GEORGE V PLAYGROUND Remains open at this time with a one way entrance and exit system in place, hand sanitizer is in place and checked each day. SLDC notices are in place as is a list of rules of use.

The application to SLDC for a Climate Change Community Grant was not approved due to the large number of applications they received, however, they would encourage the PC to apply for any future funding. 20

The Last Wolf of Humphrey Head

Flookburgh author, Andrew Musgrave spoke to Grange Now about his book and the legend behind the story.
“Everyone living locally seems familiar with the legend of the last wolf, and are proud of the stamp that history has made on our little corner of England. The legend, enduring from Medieval times, was so firmly implanted into local folktales that an anonymous ballad was written to perpetuate it, possibly written in the 1700s. In 1906, Mrs Jerome Mercier created a short fantasy story based on the myth, and it is this story that locals seem to fondly cherish. (The novel and ballad can be borrowed from Grange Library.) “The setting of the original tale was Wraysholme Tower near Allithwaite when it was allegedly owned by Sir Edgar Harrington in the 14th century. The wolf had its lair in the arched cave on Humphrey Head. Fed up with having his flocks predated upon, Sir Edgar offered a reward of land and marriage to his niece to whichever knight could kill this last annoying
beast. According to the legend, on the fateful day a posse of 30 local hopeful knights gathered to flush the wolf from its lair, and thus began a pursuit all around south Lakeland – a sort of Knights v Wolf marathon. (Spoiler alert: the hero of the tale is Sir John Harrington whose 14th century tomb is in Cartmel Priory). Mrs Mercier’s novel strays from the original legend by including Arnside Tower as part of the story. In February, Andrew published an updated fully illustrated picture book version of the tale (with a happier ending), and this is available online, and at Daisy Roots bookshop in Grange, and Flookburgh Post Office. The Last Wolf of Humphrey Head by Andrew Musgrave (ISBN: 9780995586857), priced £7.50.

An update from Victoria Hall Events: It is with great sadness that we will not be hosting our usual Christmas events this year. 2020 has certainly been a trying year! Grange Forum
The current Lockdown has interrupted our plans to start our Speaker meetings in January most probably at the Victoria Hall (the only realistic venue option at this time). The Committee is now looking at a late January start and moving the 73rd Anniversary Lunch to Tuesday 23rd March and the AGM (our closing meeting) to Tuesday 4th May - all dependent on Government guidelines. Members will be notified of the outcomes in mid December with an update in the January edition of Grange Now.
PEAT Peninsula Environmental Action Together PEAT has been delighted by the increase in new members recently. We’re here for anyone who is interested in this wonderful local area, who’d like to understand how it might be affected by climate change and the wider environmental issues we are facing and the simple actions we can take at home to help. We are working on bringing the Greening Campaign to our peninsula - we think it’s a fabulous way to engage a whole community, by adding up all the little things we all already do and some perhaps we aren’t aware of that make a difference to our carbon footprint. We hope to jointly work with the local councils to share simple ideas for saving money, celebrating our green roots and sharing ideas for an even greener future together. Our 2021 meeting programme will bring talks focussed on ideas of saving money at 26

Grange Rotary Earlier this autumn PastPresident Nigel McCulloch was lost for words when President Frank McCall, on behalf of the Rotary International Foundation, announced Nigel had been made a Paul Harris Fellow - joining a long line of past and present Grange Rotarians who have been honoured in this way. World-wide, great news that Polio has been eradicated in Africa (though not yet at the Afghanistan/Pakistan border). Rotary International Foundation has played a big part funding the success in Africa - and Grange Rotary has been a good donor. At

The Hall is not open for public use at the present. Some groups had started using the Hall but this has now ceased under the present lockdown. The outer door is unlocked to provide access to the defibrillator if required. Hopefully it will not be needed! The 200 Club is suspended for the moment because of problems in collecting the subscriptions. If you are a member of the 200 Club your membership will be extended to allow for this. The Soroptimists who work in the Sensory Garden are delighted that the RHS and Cumbria in Bloom have recognised their contribution to the local community, providing green space and thereby improving wellbeing during lockdown and beyond. Members are continuing to work in pairs, socially distanced to keep the garden as welcoming as possible. The club has been raising awareness on Social Media about the UN 16 Days of Activism (Nov 25- Dec 10) against gender based violence. The theme this year is “Orange the world: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect”
Past-President, and Paul Harris Fellow, Tony Varley gave an engaging, informative and entertaining account of his favourite holidays; and we had an important visit from Rotary’s District Governor and local Assistant Governor. They emphasised Grange Rotary’s reputation of being friendly and welcoming. Nevertheless the Covid deaths of three members, and the severe stroke of another, have been a huge shock. It is good that at least we can meet weekly via Zoom. But we have now decided on our future role and pattern. More about that next month. Meanwhile, Happy Christmas to all. Members involved in the club walking group have enjoyed walking in small groups including on Hampsfell, unfortunately in very misty and rainy conditions! 1st Grange and Cartmel Scout Group Enjoy first Virtual Remembering Pumpkin Parade fallen Hallowe’en may have been a bit different this year but it did provide an opportunity to admire the excellent pumpkin carving skills of 1st Grange and Cartmel Scout Group. The Group pumpkin parade (on Facebook) meant that our young people could enjoy this Autumn festival from the comfort and safety of their own homes. All the pumpkins were fantastic.

Great new kit for Grange United under 7’s
Again, Remembrance Day was commemorated in a special but different way by our Scout Group. In line with the request by The British Legion, many of our young people decorated their windows with homemade pictures of poppies and patriotic messages to remember those who have fallen.
Racing around the world During November and early December, 1st Grange and Cartmel Beavers and Cubs are racing around the world to raise funds for young people less fortunate than themselves. Over 500 Scout groups across the UK - many of them based in communities that were already vulnerable before COVID -19 hit - are struggling. If these groups close, thousands of young people will miss out on all the life-changing skills and experiences being a Scout can bring, precisely when it’s needed most. So, our Cubs, Beavers and leaders answered the call from Scouting HQ to take part in a sponsored, virtual #RaceRoundTheWorld to raise vital funds at this pivotal moment in our history and keep Scout groups open. To date, we have raised £201. Well done Cubs and Beavers. We are very proud of you.
Grange United Football Club’s Under 7’s squad are delighted with their brand new kit which is sponsored by father and son decorating team, Gary and Steven Porter of Gary Porter & Son. Steven also manages the team and he told Grange Now, “The Under 7’s train at Cartmel Priory school every Saturday morning at 10am for an hour apart from the weeks when they have a match to play. There is no official league for this age group and no results are recorded so the matches they play in are all fun 5-aside friendly’s. The team plays every 3 or 4 weeks against teams from Kendal, Sedbergh, Swarthmoor and Windermere.” If any parent has a child who is interested in joining the squad,

U3A keeps going throughout lockdowns Lockdown has been a trial for so many people, so many societies have needed to pause their meetings while the Covid 19 virus was so dangerous to us all. Members of Grange and District u3a very quickly became aware of Zoom and what a blessing it has been for us all. We have continued our meetings regularly, seeing friends and acquaintances via the
internet, while we pursued our interests. Not all of our interest Groups, such as Mah-Jong and Scrabble and groups that meet in each other’s homes, were able to continue because adequate social distancing would be impossible, however, quite a few groups quickly embraced the Zoom technology to make life as normal as possible. The Art Appreciation Group, Discussion Group and Environmental Awareness Group have all investigated and discussed new topics while the Friendly Bridge
of our members. Email has been the medium of choice for the French Too Group, Creative Writing and Write a Memory groups who have been working with set topics.
Group has managed to play online. The Geology and Landscape Group met for the first time, virtually, in November. German Conversation and Italian Groups have been maintaining their language skills and the Italian Group, Music Appreciation and Spindrifters all use Zoom. In normal times, we have a monthly General Meeting, when we arrange for a speaker to address us all on various topics of interest, followed by refreshments and a natter. This too has been conducted via Zoom and talks have been enjoyed by many
In between our two Lockdown periods other groups have met outside or in larger premises, always socially distanced. Walking, Bowling, Gardening and Table Tennis to name just some of them. The Covid 19 virus may have been a huge blow, but our u3a members are keeping their minds and bodies healthy for whatever the future may bring.

When a farm shop customer admitted that he was going to pop his Christmas lights on the Brussels sprout stalk he was purchasing instead of on a tree, we realised just how versatile these love ‘em or hate ‘em veg really are. If you’re not adorning yours with fairy lights or using them for the main Christmas Day feast, we’ve got a great recipe for you. Easy to prepare, tasty and comforting, it’s particularly suited to cold winter days. 30
100g crème fraiche A bunch of parsley, chopped 800g leftover cooked roast potatoes 50g grated cheddar 50g breadcrumbs Method Heat the oven to 200°c/ 160°c fan/ gas 6. Heat a tbsp of olive oil and a knob of butter in a large, oven-proof dish. Chop and add the onion, cooking until soft. Add 2 tbsp of the mustard, the flour and stock cube into the onions and gently fry for 1-2 mins. Gradually add the wine, stirring to combine and then slowly add the gravy or stock. Stir into a smooth sauce, season and simmer for 5 mins.
Mashed potatoes with Brussels sprouts, orange & smoked sausage
INGREDIENTS 3lb (1.5kg) Kind Edward potatoes, peeled ½ pound (250g) smoked sausage 2lb (1kg) English Brussels sprouts, cleaned About ½ cup (125ml) chicken broth 3 tbsp (50g) Winter Tarn butter Zest and juice of 1 orange Salt and freshly ground pepper METHOD 1. Boil the potatoes until cooked through, drain and set aside. 2. In the meantime, boil the Brussels sprouts for 10 minutes until al dente. Drain. 3. Cut the sausage into slices and set aside. 4. Heat the broth in a small saucepan. Mash the potatoes with a little of the hot broth and the butter. 5. Spoon in the Brussels sprouts and season with orange zest, a little orange juice, salt and pepper. 6. Serve garnished with the sliced sausage and mustard on the side. This year may provide the perfect opportunity to try some new leftover dishes if plans change and you end up with some unexpected spare meats and trimmings! One of our favourite leftover recipes is our delicious festive turkey gratin, which uses all the best bits from Christmas dinner!
Higginsons Festive Turkey Gratin Serves 6 (adjust the quantities according to how much meat you have leftover)
Ingredients I large onion 8 cooked pigs in blankets or chipolatas, cut into bitesize pieces 3 tbsp wholegrain mustard 50g plain flour 150ml white wine 500ml leftover gravy or chicken stock 6 leftover stuffing balls, broken into chunks 300g leftover shredded turkey (substitute for goose or chicken if required)
Add the pigs in blankets or chipolatas into the dish along with the turkey, stuffing pieces, the remaining mustard, crème fraiche and parsley. When bubbling, crumble the potatoes over the top of the filling so you have some larger and smaller chunks. Scatter a light layer of the breadcrumbs and cheese on top and bake for a further 20 minutes or until the potatoes are crisp and the filling is bubbling around the edges. If making extra quantities, tip the filling into the spare containers and top with the potatoes, breadcrumbs and cheese. Socially-Distanced but Close to Our Hearts Last month, like many others, we held two acts of Remembrance. On 1st November we held our All Souls Day service, during which members of the congregation were invited to come forward and light a candle in memory of a departed loved one. This brief, solemn moment brings great solace to those in mourning, and those cherishing fond memories of the departed. On Remembrance Sunday members of the community took a break from their daily exercise to pause for a while in

We are proceeding on the assumption that our plans for December and the Christmas period can go ahead but may need to re-examine the plans in light of regulations in force at the time. The final lunchtime concert is planned for 16 December. This will be our Director of Music’s Charles’ celebratory concert to mark his forthcoming retirement, he will be joined by a soprano. The concert will be 11.00 am with no admission charge but donations are

Even though we had had very little warning of the lock-down, we were able to hold an impromptu act of remembrance during the previous Sunday’s service, when the names of the fallen

As part of our outreach to Lindale parish and its Primary School, St Peter’s will be making a gift of a crib set for the children; it is hoped that this can be used in some way to involve the children in our services over Christmas. Although we were unable to hold the Civic Remembrance Service the fall of knitted poppies was installed behind the altar on the Sunday before Remembrance – it looks magnificent. The church also placed a tribute to the departed on the Town War Memorial.
St John the Baptist
The last service to take place in St John’s preceding the month of lockdown was a very special one. We commemorated loved ones who had passed, recently or in the past. Members of the congregation went to the front of the church to light candles of remembrance It was a very moving occasion. St John’s has served the village of Flookburgh for 120
years, through two world wars and now this current pandemic. Services may have been curtailed for a month , but the church remains open from 1012 on Wednesdays and from 2-4 on Fridays for quiet prayer and reflection. All are welcome. Subject to Covid restrictions we hope to have a carol service at 4pm on Sunday 20th December and services both on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. Come Holy Spirit
I think my mind has gone on strike! I can’t think of anything worth telling a tale about.

The four-week lockdown has put into abeyance the opening of churches for public acts of worship but we are open for private prayer on Thursdays and Fridays, 10am -12 noon. What is not on hold is the broadcast each day at 11am of Fr Philip’s Mass with reflections on the scripture readings of the day, available on YouTube. The Remembrance Sunday Mass began with an act of remembrance, the last Post, the Silence and Reveille. November is the month of remembrance of those who have died. On All Souls Day (2nd November) parishioners gathered under the porch of the cemetery gates. Torrential rain and high winds made our traditional

walk impossible. We slayed under cover, naming before God deceased relatives and friends, especially those who have died since November 2019, many of whom had a simple graveside funeral service. Fr Philip stepped out into the rain to give a blessing. November 4th was the feast day of our patron saint, Charles Borromeo. He was Archbishop of Milan in the 16th Century, a gifted administrator, a leading reformer and a devoted carer of victims of the plague. We thank today’s carers for their devotion to the sick. Christian Christmas cards are available in the church porch on Thursdays and Fridays 10am – 12noon. We wish all readers a joyful and blessed Christmas. Christmas Masses (restrictions allowing) Christmas Masses will be: 24th December Vigil Mass 7.00pm Christ the King Milnthorpe; 25th December 9.00am St Charles Grange; 11.00am Our Lady of Lourdes Arnside. Bookings will begin on 6th December. We will give full instructions on how to book at that time. We are planning to get in the maximum numbers that are permitted by the regulations. However, I have actually been praying (not too much!!) and found myself reflecting on the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church. When one reads the Acts of the Apostles, you become very aware of the role of the Spirit in the life of the early Church. Devotion to the Spirit was very strong in the early Church. Sadly, for one reason or another, devotion declined and it was only in the 19th century and early 20th century that interest was renewed. Today, particularly through the Charismatic movement and interest in other Christian Churches, growth in the role of the Spirit in the life of the Church has found a new lease of life. However, old habits die hard and well-established customs, prayer forms, traditional ideas and attitudes of good people has made

Sadly, just as we were preparing to meet for our annual Remembrance Sunday service, further lockdown restrictions meant the plans for worship in church for November had to be put aside, although a wreath was laid, with quiet reflection, at the village war memorial on the east wall of the church. Absence from the church building didn’t stop the acts of worship. This was an opportunity to develop further our online resources. We continue to be grateful to Team Rector Jim Bruce for compiling a detailed, illustrated service sheet to guide us at home. New for November was a video recording of Lay Reader Steve Bell’s planned Remembrance Sunday

As we ourselves are living human beings, over the years we grow, develop and change physically and emotionally. Similarly, the Church as a living organisation must change as time moves on. The laying on of hands whilst praying for the sick, raising arms in prayer of praise, praying in tongues are some examples of praying in the Spirit not always readily accepted in some Churches. The movement is not easily accepted by a number of people; “we have never done this!” is the reason offered. We are living in an age of great challenge and we must open ourselves to the working of the Spirit in our lives … read the account of Pentecost in the Acts of the Apostles. As Saint Cardinal John Henry Newman stated: “To change is to grow and to change often is to become perfect” God bless, Fr P. service, including readings, prayers and pictures of the war memorials inside and outside the church, marking the names of those who gave their lives. A big thank you is due to all who helped with this. This was a further reminder that it’s the people who are the church and enrich us with their God-given talents. Weekly zoom meetings have continued, as has the hard work of the volunteers running the Monday food club.

You are invited to take one or more, to plant in a large pot or open ground and as you plant and watch the tiny shoot develop, remember with love and thanksgiving, those who have died. FRIENDLY HONEST PROPERTY ADVICE
The present we all wanted. So the year is drawing to a close and, hopefully by the time you read this, so has Lockdown 2.0. Strangely, whilst the retail sector goes through the toughest time in recent memory, the property market is still going strong. The initial fear that a second lockdown may well be enough to put the brakes on the market has passed and activity levels remain high. As I write this Rightmove are estimating that there are currently 650,000 ongoing agreed property sales, an increase of 67% on the same time in 2019. Sales figures from October are 50% higher in 2020 than in 2019. The ‘mini-boom’ continues! In some cases the approach of the end of the stamp duty holiday has even seen a lowering of the average marketing price of property. With some owners looking to secure a quick sale and have everything tied up before the end of March to qualify for stamp duty exemption we are seeing realistically priced properties placed on the market to attract a quick sale. That said it certainly isn’t an indication that the level of house prices are on the downward turn. If anything it is an example of proactive and sensible marketing. Rightmove figures also show that their prediction of a 7% growth in average house prices over the year seems to be on track as, with a month to go, the rise in prices sits at 6.3%. With no sign of the pre-Christmas slow down coming into effect yet, many people may just be getting the Christmas present that they really wanted this year – an agreed sale or purchase and a fresh start to a New Year. And thanks to Robert and Mark at Hackney and Leigh who switch on the display along Main Street. The Christmas Tree Committee will be lighting the tree in the Ornamental Gardens on 5 December. We all look forward to seeing the tree lit up, completing the display and making Grange twinkle. This channel has been dug right up to the railway embankment resulting in, it is very dangerous for walkers and sheep to try and cross over.
