Letter from the Editor Local schools will be thinking about plans for the summer, but find out what they’ve all been up to on the school reports page. Green fingered residents will all be busy enjoying the garden, but if you fancy trying something new, take a look at the clubs and society page - maybe there’s an activity there that you just didn’t know was available.

How about an electric bike tour? What better way to tackle those hills? Further afield the Tour de France is getting under way over in Yarksher! Our cartoonist David Boyer has his own take on proceedings. Apologies to everyone who is offended in any way. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a Cumbrian start to the ‘tour’ next year

This month we report on summer events at Holker and the Edwardian festival that have been a great success. There are plenty more to come throughout the area such as the Cumbria Steam gathering and Cartmel Show.

Well done to the junior reporters. We had a marvellous collection of entries. So many in fact that we decided to award a prize to each year group from years 2 to 6. All the entries were independently judged by a year 4 primary teacher from outside the area. We now have 5 prizes from Old Hall Farm at Bouth - one for each year group. Thanks very much to them for their generosity in encouraging the junior writers. Our first edition of Windermere Now has gone out. The big story there is the on street parking controversy. Grange beware! Surely we don’t have red squirrels here on the Cartmel peninsula do we…………..?

Windermere Now tackles onstreet parking - Grange beware! The first issue of Windermere Now has gone out to all of LA23 postcode. The main story is about the threat of on street parking charges. Grange beware! The County Council is planning on bringing in parking meters in 12 areas including Barrow, Kendal, Windermere and Bowness, Ambleside and Keswick. While reasearching the story it became clear that the situation is volatile and can change at any time. Let’s hope it never gets off the ground, as if it does, parking meters could spread to other towns in Cumbria, including Grange. The authority argues it needs to introduce the charges to help deal with government cuts. Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet member responsible for highways and transport had this to say, “I appreciate that people are concerned about the impact that on-street parking charges will have on their town centres, but we can no longer afford to provide this service without generating some income to cover the costs. This is a far more

palatable solution than the alternatives – which would be to stop enforcing any parking restrictions and see our towns clogged with cars, or make cuts to frontline services which would impact on vulnerable people.”

had a great response from locals up in Windermere, Bowness and surrounding areas. We are now looking forward to working on issue 2 - deadline August 19th

The claim of Cumbria County Council is that on street charges will reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. The claim was also made that local business will benefit from increased turnover. A contrary view is that additional back door taxation is being used at the expense of residents rather than making efficiency savings at the expense of the council. On a happier note, Windermere Now has

Enjoy the summer!

Dr Norman retires

ISSUE 276 DEADLINE - 21ST JULY

After 25 years at Nutwood Surgery Dr Norman is hanging up his stethoscope, but hopefully not his bow tie. After training and qualifying in Leeds in 1975, Dr Norman along with his GP wife, Dr Jane Irwin, came to Grange in 1979. He initially joined Dr John Nightingale, a partner at Holmewood Surgery on Kents Bank Road replacing Dr Bob Mason, before moving to Nutwood Surgery, a year later.

Chris, Kerstin, Sharon and Glenn

In 1984, Dr Nightingale retired and this is when Dr Irwin joined Dr Norman as a partner at Nutwood Surgery, and they continued to practice side by side for the next 21 years. For thirty years, Dr Norman was a medical officer at Cartmel Racecourse. Dr Norman, although still practicing, left Nutwood surgery in 2005 to pursue his interest in wilderness medicine and prehospital trauma treatment by becoming an expedition doctor ,whilst continuing to work as a GP Locum in Cumbria. He has joined expeditions all over the world such as the Himalayas, Canada, Peru and Iceland.

He hopes to continue trekking but now as part of the group, and not as the medic. It also means he will have more time to spend with his three daughters, two of whom got married last year.

Clare, who works in Project Management at Grangemouth Refinery, married a Scotsman and is now living in Edinburgh. Lucy also got married last year, to a Frenchman, and is living in Annecy in the French Alps and working as a Physio.

A huge thank you to those who deliver Grange Now for us

Congratulations go to …. Stott Park Bobbin Mill, who were voted the winners of the Small Visitor Attraction of the Year Award, in the 2014 Cumbria Tourism Awards. Located at Finsthwaite, this extensive working mill has produced literally millions of wooden bobbins, vital to the Lancashire spinning and weaving industries. The attraction is well worth a visit, with the story of the Bobbin Mill being brought to life with a brand new exhibition and a hands-on family trail helps visitors to imagine what it was like to work at the mill.

Incredibly, some 250 men and boys (some drafted in from workhouses) worked here over the years in often arduous conditions to produce a quarter of a million bobbins a week.

Free school meals for all Key Stage 1 children

A few Headteachers are concerned at the speed with which this big change has to be implemented, and there are concerns at the extra work for already overstretched staff.

Local primary schools are gearing up to deliver free school meals to all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, from September this year.

Cumbria County Council rubber stamped the proposal on Thursday June 5th and has given the council £1.15million to fund kitchen refurbishments or extensions but there is a real concern that the work may not be finished in time for schools reopening in September. There has been a mixed response from Headteachers throughout the County with most believing this is a positive change, with Phillipa Summers, Headteacher of Grange Primary School commenting, “we have the staff and facilities to be able to offer the free school meals for KS1 and are expecting all the parents to take this up.”

Councillor Anne Burns, cabinet member for children’s services, agreed that there are difficulties in adjusting to the new scheme saying, “It’s not easy when something like this gets dropped on you by government,” she said.

“We’re making sure that children won’t suffer by working closely with schools to ensure they are fed nutritional meals.” Head teacher of Lindale Primary School, Sarah Coleman is very positive about the change. She told Grange Now, “At Lindale we are very excited about the opportunity to be able to offer free school meals to all KS1 pupils. Being a small school, we have had to look for creative approaches to look at how we were going to manage this. We have been working with a local chef to provide high quality meals using locally sourced ingredients.

Congratulations also to Hill Crest Country Guest House, Near Newby Bridge who were voted the winners in the Guest Accommodation/B&B of the Year Award. Our menu includes traditional choices such as Roast Turkey & Roast potatoes or Freshly breaded chicken fillet served on tomato pasta, a vegetarian choice each day, a homemade soup of the day and a pudding. These will also be available to purchase to older children, children in our pre-school and staff. The thinking behind the government’s plan is very good for children; it is raising the standards expected of school meals and with the best will in the world, it is hard to keep varying the changes with packed lunches. Also I know as a working parent that cooking at home after a long day can easily become the same old favourites or quick alternatives. Of course it has caused some logistical problems for schools and will be important that once established is continued and hopefully extended to all primary pupils.” The Council have backed their scheme with a statement saying pupils eating hot school dinners were healthier and performed better academically.

We are soon to lose a few of our fantastic deliverers, some to retirement and some of our younger people are going off to university. We wish them all well and would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you for all their efforts in getting Grange Now out to our readers. If you are interested in becoming a deliverer for Grange Now, please contact Sharon or Kerstin on 015395 35453, for more information.

The sun shines on the righteous... and those at Holker Festival! Investment Matters By Gary Richardson FCIB, CFP Chartered Financial Planner

One of the fundamental building blocks when establishing an investment portfolio is to ensure that you do not place all your “eggs in one basket”. Technically this is known as diversification or asset allocation. To do this properly it is more than simply deciding upon a number of different investments or funds and dividing your money across those. The reason for this is that whilst you will be investing in different funds these funds may well duplicate each other. For example, if they all invest in the UK Equity Income sector then all of your money is invested in the UK Equity Income sector despite being held across a number of different funds. As such there would be no true diversification across the asset classes but simply diversification across providers who invest in the same sector. Instead, it is important to investment across the major asset classes of equities, fixed interest, cash and property. The benefit of doing so is that the returns from these asset classes are not directly correlated which means that one asset class can gain even if another is falling. This in turn ensures smoothed returns rather than vast highs and lows (technically known as volatility). The exact proportion of one’s portfolio that should be held in

each of the various asset classes is determined by a number of factors and specific to each individual. Such drivers include the extent of investment risk you are willing or need to take, your investment timescale, the extent of other assets on which you can call if required etc. From this starting base you can then look at subsequent key areas such as tax efficiency, investment providers etc but only by getting the basics right will a portfolio be property constructed for both the short and longer term. Once in place it is equally important to periodically review all of these basics within a portfolio to ensure it remains appropriate at all times.

The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. Independent Investment Associates Limited is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

This year’s event saw dry, warm weather on the first day and it just got better and better with soaring temperatures over the weekend. There was sun, fun and laughter with everyone getting into the spirit of the occasion, including Lord Cavendish himself who offered to go down the helter skelter (which was pretty high, your intrepid reporter has first knowledge of that), if £1000 was donated for St Mary’s Hospice. The total was reached and the challenge duly met. Lord Cavendish arrived safely at the bottom...eventually! 22,000 people visited the festival over the 3 days and were treated to fantastic music from the bandstand, a wide range of exhibitors and a record number of large golds being awarded for show gardens and of course, local residents and groups put on a fine display of goods and crafts .

Trade exhibitors Trade exhibitors were delighted with the numbers of visitors and local artist, Ann Southward, who had a stand of her stunning seascapes and delicate hand painted silk scarves.

John and Olga Dixon from Fat Flour Bakery were kept very busy selling their incredible range of beautiful, fresh baked bread and delicious scones and pastries and if that wasn’t enough turn around and there was Gee’s Meringues, these really are a must-try. Brooke Supplies had a big stand at the festival and seemed very pleased with both the weather and the turnout. Grange Now and sister publication Windermere Now also had a stand at the festival. Take a quick peek at the staff in the photo and they say policemen are looking younger all the time!

Lamberts told Grange Now that due to the reduced parking facilities, they will carry on doing free local delivery which they already offer but also they will have a ‘carry to car’ service. The increased space will not only mean the ability to carry extra stock but they will be offering boarding for small animals. The counter in the former bank has been donated to a new train museum in Carnforth. As Sian said, “the counter is very beautiful and ornate and we wanted it to go to a good home”. Sian told Grange Now, “we are very excited about the venture

and we are very grateful to all our customers. It is down to their loyalty that we are able to make this move and we very much appreciate their custom. We look forward to welcoming them to the new store”.

Festival gardens and events All five festival show gardens won large gold, and official judge Chris Arnold commented, “Rarely do we see a full offering of equally high entries, built to extremely high quality. It was an absolute joy and privilege to select the best from the best.” On Friday the show got off to a flying start on the Friday with special guest Christine Walkden delighting visitors in the Garden Theatre with her gardening expertise and book signing session. Best in Show was awarded to Sharp Paving Ltd for their garden ‘It’s All Water Under the Bridge’. The Judges had been impressed on the incredible thought and consideration that had gone in to planting and innovation of all designs. Eleven large golds were awarded in the Horticultural Marquee with

Charlie Clarke from Westdale Nursery winning The Lady Cavendish award. Best in Show (up to 15’ length) went to Philip Tivey & Son and Best in Show (over 15’ length) was awarded to Chrysanthemums Direct.

Two Golds and the Chris Conner Trophy for Grange WI Members of Grange WI were triumphant after winning once again at the Holker Festival. In the craft events, Sarah Johnston won the gold award for her paper cut of the zodiac sign, Aries and Janet Ferguson won a gold award for her flower display. In a double win for Janet, her flower display also won the Chris Conner Trophy for best floral exhibit. The team entry also won, taking a silver award for their interpretation of the theme, ‘A country calendar’.

All in a good cause St Mary’s Hospice worked round the clock to prepare their first ever show garden at the festival and were delighted to be presented with a large gold award. Their ‘Garden of Reflection’ marks their 25th anniversary and was created with the help of local landscape gardener, Fiona Thomas from Askam in Furness, to help raise awareness of the important work done by the charity in South Cumbria. £1000 was raised when Lord Cavendish had a go on the festival helter skelter, all in aid of St Mary’s Hospice! ….and finally, Jillian Rouse, festival manager comments; “The high praise from the judges was lovely to hear and we’re absolutely delighted with how magnificent the show gardens and Horticultural Marquee looked. It’s the first time all of the show

STEAM GATHERING

Funding available for local groups and clubs

Are you currently fundraising for a local group, club or project? Need new equipment or need to refurbish your hall or meeting place? Cumbria County Council has grants available to support local community projects. You have to be a not for profit, voluntary group who are, ideally, currently fundraising for a specific project.

Annual car boot raises a whopping £4900 for St Mary’s Hospice

In its 25th year of fundraising for St Mary’s Hospice, the Leven Valley Support Group, ably headed by Dorothy Crabtree, held its annual car boot and Summer fair on Saturday June 15th. Despite the weather letting them down a bit, it at least managed to stay dry but even

Grants have previously been awarded to a wide range of community and voluntary organisations including playgroups, sports groups, youth clubs, environmental groups, and community halls. In the past, the majority of grants that have been awarded are for the purchase of equipment or for refurbishment works. So, if you’re a local group, run by volunteers, and are currently fundraising, or would be willing to undertake your own fundraising,

and would like to apply for funding, get in touch with Kelly Alty on 01539 713447 or email kelly.alty@cumbria.gov.uk for further information.

though the weather didn’t turn up the public certainly did and Dorothy told Grange Now that the event, “surpassed all expectations by raising an incredible £4,900 for the Hospice.” Dot, went on to thank all the many friends and volunteers who helped to make this event the big success that it was. There was something for everyone with Furness Clog dancers giving a magnificent performance, the Storyteller taking the children on a journey to another world; Fifi the

flea flew in from Paris with Uncle Tim and Daisy and the magician enthralled the children with his magic tricks. There were bargains galore to be had from the many car boots, craft and cake stalls, plants, produce and gifts. Dorothy would like to take this opportunity to, “offer heartfelt thanks to all our friends and volunteers for making the day such a success once again and a big thank you to everyone for their continued support.”

Unfortunately the meeting of the Grange & Cartmel Neighbourhood Forum which had been scheduled for Thursday 3rd July at Newton in Cartmel Village Hall, High Newton has been postponed. They will be arranging a new date, probably for late September, and will advise as soon as that is done.

2014 sees the 42nd running of the Cumbria Steam Gathering brought to you by the Cumbria Steam & Vintage Vehicle Society LTD. The gathering is a loud, colourful and fun-packed event that hosts a great variety of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. The event features splendid steam engines, vintage commercial vehicles, hundreds of your favourite classic cars, motorcycles, bicycles, agricultural and industrial tractors, farm equipment and stationary engines for your enjoyment. So you don’t miss out on all this and more, the weekend of Saturday July 26th and Sunday July 27th are the dates to get penciled in your diary. For the very first time in this corner of the world, members of the Ford and Fordson Association will travel to Flookburgh to stage their annual Expo display at this year’s gathering. The display has now been produced for ten years and aims to highlight the varied output of the Ford Motor Company particularly in respect of their contribution to agricultural mechanisation. For fans of Fordson tractors, this is an occasion not to be missed.

The long-established craft exhibition will be there once again and after the success of last year’s food hall packed with the local produce of local farms and businesses, it will be back again and even tastier in 2014!

Other popular highlights are the large grandstands and arena parades showcasing a constant stream of traditional treasures. In addition there is the opportunity to drive a traction engine with all donations going to local charities. There will be lots of activity in the working area including demonstrations of ploughing, cultivating, woodsawing, haymaking machinery and the amazing Kendal Bowmen will be showing off their Archery skills! This fun filled family day out has plenty to keep the children entertained, including magic shows,

miniature remote controlled car racing and a traditional fairground that has many vintage rides and attractions, some that are almost 100 years old.

As well as this, youngsters aged 13 - 16 can complete a Junior Tractor Driver Training Course, obtaining a certificate of capability. (Pre-booking is essential for this two day training course. Details of how to apply can be found on the exhibitors page of this website) The entire event is catered for by a variety of food outlets and a fully licensed bar area ensuring that the Cumbria Steam Gathering is a great way to experience all of the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of a marvelous and quintessential Cumbrian weekend. See you there!

Take an electric bike round the Cartmel peninsula Electric bikes can help to take on otherwise daunting terrain,Rachel Oakden put one through its paces along Cumbria’s Cartmel peninsula

POh, the shame. I am tackling my first hill on an electric bicycle and I seriously think I may have to get off and push. To be fair, the relentless climb known as Bigland Hill is a whopper, one of the most challenging sections of the 152-mile Walney-toWear (W2W) cycle route.

Without battery power I’m not sure I’d even want to walk up it, let alone cycle. But the point of electric bikes is to tackle otherwise-daunting terrain, and I’ve brought one to Cumbria’s Cartmel peninsula to see what it can do. I did the first part of my journey under someone else’s steam, on the bikefriendly Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Standing on the platform, I discovered that being in possession of an ebike is like having an unusual breed of dog. It provokes stares of curiosity and starts conversations with strangers: where did you get it, how much does it cost, is it hard work?

The summit appears after a mile of twisting agony, after which it is all dreamy downhill gliding through woods and lanes lined with damson blossom. In Cartmel I refuel at the Pig and Whistle, a family-friendly pub (with an affordable kids’ menu) owned by chef Simon Rogan (who also runs the restaurant L’Enclume). Then it’s back uphill the way I came, the longer, gentler ascent proving well within my battery-charged capabilities. Cresting Bigland Hill, plunging downwards at a sharp angle with my wrists bent backwards over the brakes, I am proud of my earlier achievement – until two “real” cyclists overtake me on road bikes. Their Lycra-clad bottoms recede into the distance, and I resolve to save that sticky toffee pudding for the kids.

Summer feet During the long, hot days of summer, we can’t wait to whip out the flip flops and showcase our new sandals, but we also need to make sure that our feet are kept healthy through the summer months. To prevent excessive foot sweating and odour in the summer, wear open sandals when you can, or change tights or socks at least once a day. Footwear such as flip flops and flimsy sandals but can often lead to blistering caused by rubbing - particularly between the toes if you are wearing flip flops with ‘thongs’. Cracked heels can also develop from open-backed shoes rubbing around the edge of the heel, as the fat pad under

the heel expands sideways on weight-bearing areas and therefore increases the likelihood of the skin to ‘crack’. To prevent cracked heels developing apply moisturising cream twice a day, and use an abrasive stone such as a pumice stone or a non-metal footfile when in the shower or bath to exfoliate the build up of skin that can occur. However, if the problem worsens you may need to seek help from a podiatrist.

Donating Clothes to Cancer Research UK Slimmers in Grange-over-Sands and Allithwaite areas have joined together to spring-clean their wardrobes and donate their clothes to Cancer Research UK in support of the national fundraising campaign ‘The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw’. Members of the local Slimming World groups collected all their unwanted clothes, shoes and accessories to donate to their local Cancer Research UK shop in Ulverston to support the campaign which ran in May this year. Each single bag collected could raise around £25 for the charity. Veronica Jones, who runs both groups in the area which meet every Wednesday , says her members were more than willing to donate their unwanted clothes to help such a worthwhile cause, and jumped at the chance to recycle the clothes they’ve slimmed out of to help raise money. “One in three of us are affected by cancer and being overweight increases the risk of developing the disease, so we’re determined to do anything we can do to help fight cancer and help people lead healthier lives.

Anyone who’d like to lose weight is welcome at the Grange group, which meets every Wednesday morning at 9.30 am at the United Reformed Church Hall, Kents Bank Road or the Allithwaite group which meets every Wednesday evening 7.00 pm at the Allithwaite Community Centre, Quarry Lane. Children’s Dentistry Smiles Dental believes the sooner children are taught about the importance of oral health, the better. Having healthy teeth and gums from an early age will greatly impact your child’s dental health in the future.

We provide each child with a tailor-made treatment plan to ensure they receive the best dental care available. Our dentists focus on oral hygiene instruction for children to teach them how to clean their teeth effectively. We also believe strongly in preventative dentistry. Our dentists often recommend fissure sealants, which involve a plastic coating being painted on to the grooves of the back teeth to form a protective layer that keeps food and bacteria from getting stuck in them and causing decay.

The process is quick and easy and they usually last for many years, but needs to be checked regularly to ensure that the seal is intact. It can wear over time, and sometimes needs to be added to or replaced to be sure that no decay can start underneath it. Our friendly team will do everything they can to welcome your little ones and help them feel at ease so that their visit is a stress free and educational experience. Taking Fun Seriously, at the Cartmel Fun-run The recent ‘Cartmel Fun Runs’ event was a great success, both as a fundraiser for Cartmel Primary School, and as a sporting event for the wider community. Over 140 runners took part in the four races, on a sunny summer’s evening, raising over £200 for the school. Stephen Bleasdale (Cartmel Priory) won the 2.5 mile Seniors Race in a time of 14 minutes 47 seconds, closely followed by Andrew Wattam, in second place. The first lady home was Helen Gillibrand in a time of 19 minutes 52 seconds, followed by Donna Posthlewaite and Belinda Heyes. The first school girl home was Chloe-Lee LathamSaunders (Cartmel Priory) in a time of 22 minutes 39 secs.

2020 vision comes to Grange.

A Short Eared Owl hunting, by Danny Green / 2020 vision

From 5-29 August the 2020 Vision street gallery exhibition comes to Grange. The exhibition is supported by a series of events including an outdoor audio-

visual show and THE VISION! theatre show featuring several of the 2020VISION photographers.

020VISION is the most ambitious nature photography project ever

staged in the UK. It aims to engage and enthuse a massive audience by using innovative visual media to convey the value of restoring our most important but often fragmented habitats - to show that healthy ecosystems are not just for wildlife, but are something fundamental to us all. For the first time, 20 of the UK’s top nature and wildlife photographers, along with filmmakers and sound recordists, have come together to tell an inspirational story about some of the UK’s ecosystems and the services they provide to us all, such as clean water, fresh air and productive soils.

The Roadshow aims to increase the relevance of nature to a wide audience, communicating the value of repairing and reconnecting our natural habitats and encouraging people to actively engage with natural landscapes whether in the wilds of our mountain ranges or in a small pocket of wildness in our towns and cities. More details at www.2020v.org

The junior race was won by Evan Allen in 9 minutes 44 seconds with the first girl Mia Heath just behind in a time of 10 minutes 07 seconds. If you think you can take on the challenge of running round Cartmel fun run, then start training now; you’ve only got 12 months until the next race!

Red squirrels making a comeback?

Bob Cartwright, Secretary of the Westmorland Red Squirrels has sent us this exciting news about the possible return of red squirrels to our area. We’re often asked whether grey control makes any difference when there are so many around. “The reds will never recover. Surely you’re fighting a losing battle” is the cry. It’s true that some populations have suffered when important woodland habitat has been lost in places such as Foulshaw and Meathop. But happily the evidence of the reds’ ability to recover and re-colonise is clear and to the contrary: where landowners, often with the help of our volunteers, are tackling greys we’re seeing reds spread back into their former territory. Sightings around Witherslack, Cartmel and Holker Hall are extremely heartening and should encourage all of us to keep turning south east Cumbria red. If you spot a grey and would like advice or help please let us know.

Is there hope on the horizon for the Red Squirrel?

If you can help us with our work we’d love to have you on board. Call 01539 821714 or 07836 584201. Or go to www.westmorlandredsquirrels. org.uk. And if you see a red, we’d love to hear about that too!

People of Grange get ‘on board’ for this years Edwardian Festival The sun shone all day on Grange’s 21st Edwardian Festival and crowds flocked to Park Road Gardens, many taking advantage of a vintage red London bus which ran free round-trips all day from Windermere Road car park (where parking was also free), to the Festival with stops on Kents Bank Road, Hampsfell Road and outside the Victoria Hall on the way back.

For all who attended it was a wonderful evening of vibrant, varied entertainment full of audience participation made even better by the fact they raised around £1500 for Singing for the brain, which far exceeded their target amount. informed as to developments. The Soroptimists would like to thank everyone who participated, helped or attended.

Looking into the past, for the future Cartmel Village Society has embarked on a project to record residents’ memories and collect hard copy records for future generations. The oral history part of the project will involve interviewing volunteers forming the basis of an archive. The theme of the interview may be general or may focus on agriculture, architecture, education or commerce. The recorded interviews will be made available to local residents, visitors to the village and social historians. Separately, the Cartmel Village Society is assisting the Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society who are researching the history of Cartmel as part of its Village Histories Project and is

especially interested in the social history of the village. This might include memories and documents that give some information about development and changes in the shops and businesses, residents, occupations, religious worship and living conditions. An open day is planned for residents wishing to be interviewed or drop by with their records at the Priory School on the 16th July between 10 am to 3 pm For more information or to join the Cartmel Village Society, please email: Cartmelvillagesociety@gmail.com

The bus was a new attraction this year and will hopefully return next year. Another new attraction was a fantastic group of 10 musicians from Blackburn called ‘Blowjangles’ who raised the roof of the bandstand with their jolly and madcap singing and playing - a return visit is promised next year! Two Edwardian policeman were also on hand to ensure all were having a good time and to prove Grange still has coppers on the beat, if only for a day.

The Edwardian Festival Committee also welcomed this year a Hot Potato stall and a traditional Pancakes stall to join the forty or so stalls dotted around the garden and many took advantage of the sunshine and the deck chairs to enjoy the day-long entertainment on the bandstand. Grange Primary School and Allithwaite Primary School pupils entertained with music and clog dancing, along with traditional Morris and clog dancers, jazz band and more. Ice cream was very popular on such a warm day and younger members of the family much enjoyed Punch & Judy, Harvey Rush children’s entertainer and miniature train rides. Grange W.I. also triumphed on the day by winning best stall. Raising money is not the main aim of the Festival (although a useful by-product), the main aim has always been for local families to enjoy a grand day out and to encourage visitors to come to Grange, many now making return visits year after year. So all the Edwardian finery is now back in the closet for another year and the Committee can relax for a while before work begins on planning the 2015 Festival - (next year on 13th June) - and feel relieved and gratified that the 2014 event went off so well. One of the ideas which arose from the consultation, and which received a very positive response, was a proposal to establish a Community Orchard in the centre of the village on land owned by Lower Allithwaite Parish Council. The suggested piece of land is the field which lies directly behind the allotments and King George V playing fields (Allithwaite playground) which is currently a green field site with no access to the public of the parish.

Residents were invited to a second consultation, on site, on June 11th to see sketches of proposed ideas for the land and the reaction was

extremely positive with alot of villagers coming up with many more suggestions for the development of the land. A popular idea is to create an orchard which would make an excellent community project which will enable local people to come together to plant trees, design layouts or even tree sponsorship. A picnic area for families and various benches around the orchard have also been suggested. If you have any ideas or wish to offer help in whatever way, large or small please contact the Parish Clerk, Phil Turner on 015395-32639 or lapc.clerk@gmail.com

Cartmel in Bloom commissions Willow Art Cartmel in Bloom teamed up with students from Newton Rigg College and offered cash prizes to students for creating and designing willow art structures with a wildlife in the area theme. The students, led by Head of Horticulture Shelagh Todd, worked singularly or in teams for six months to create art inspired by the plant and animal life surrounding the river Eea which runs through the village.

First prize went to Bianca Schwenke and Alan Madeley for their pair of swans which look totally in place on the edge of the garden of the Royal Oak and visible from the walkway on the South side of the river. The dragon flies created by Alison Stanley and Jane Phillips won second prize and third prize was won by Colin Gilbert for his Poppies. The students received cash awards for their winning pieces. Once the artists had installed their pieces, it was then judged by a team of three including Shelagh

Todd, local basket maker and willow artist and member of the Witherslack art group, Jane Bradley and Landscape designer Sarah Byrne. Shelagh Todd said about the project: In education, we talk about ‘enrichment programs’ and this was precisely one such program, more important for us than taking part in a show due to the more permanent nature of the installation. It was also very helpful to the students to work to a client brief rather than in abstract terms as it gave them greater focus.

What will you pack in your picnic hamper? With forecasters predicting a warm and sunny month ahead, why not escape into the lovely lakeland countryside with a gourmet picnic in tow? A selection of Higginsons home cooked sliced meats with our beetroot chutney, a chunk of Creamy Lancashire cheese, and some of our home-made potato & mint salad all travel well. To accompany them how about a couple of our legendary Pork Pies and some freshly baked breads from the Hazelmere Bakery? For afters, a punnet of plump cherries would make a tasty alternative to Strawberries (if you’re one of those people who has already consumed a years’ worth of strawberries during Wimbledon). If you’re planning a barbeque at home, Higginsons have an extensive range of BBQ meats available. New for 2014 are the marinated spring Lamb Kebabs, and a range of Spicentice rubs which are perfect with our tender BBQ Steaks. We would highly recommend our smoked Beef ‘Ranch Burger’ (winner of a Gold Award at the Q Guild National BBQ Competition). They taste great in a sesame seed bun topped with BBQ relish, lettuce and sliced tomato, with a summer salad on the side.

Grange Prom Youth Project – Recreation Area update The money for the final piece of equipment for the skate park on Grange promenade has been raised thanks to District Councillors Andrew Gardiner and Tom Harvey, County Council’s 0-19 fund, the Grange Rotary Club, the Charles Godwin Trust and the twelve collecting boxes in local shops.

The cheque for purchasing the new quarter pipe was presented by County Councillor Bill Wearing to the Town Council on May 12th, thereby donating the equipment to the town for the benefit of local young people and visitors. This brings the total raised by the group since 2004 to £74,000 for the new

facilities in the recreation area on the promenade. The recreation area (i.e tennis, putting, bowling and crazy golf) is now being run by the Grange Prom Youth Project with the help of many local volunteers. We hope to raise enough money to replace the current crazy golf course with a low maintenance one and repair the

fencing surrounding the tennis court and kick-about area.

Please support us by buying a day ticket at £5 or a season ticket at £25 from the Promenade café or Grange Now office. Both these tickets entitle 2 adults and children to play tennis, bowls, putting and crazy golf all day between 10.30 and 4.30 every day, weather permitting.

New lease of life for the Lindale Inn

Ian Mayor, and partner Joanne Long, are breathing new life into the Lindale Inn or as locals know it, bottom house, Lindale. Ian, who is a qualified Chef and former Assistant Manager of The County Hotel, has worked in the industry for many years and he reopened the pubs doors on Friday May 30th.

Currently they are serving meals 6 days a week. Tuesday to Wednesday meals are available from 5pm and from Thursday to Sunday they are open all day from 12noon.

Ian has lots of exciting plans for the place and hopes to restore the pub’s darts team and is also going to install a large screen tv to show the World Cup matches. Live music will also feature, with local singer Chuck Fish kicking things off with his acoustic guitar on Friday 11th July. Ian and Joanne look forward to welcoming you for a meal or just for chat and a drink.

Adult Education Due to recent reductions in our budget Cumbria County Council now have very strict rules on numbers which will affect viability of classes, even fitness classes, during the Summer term, so if you were swithering about re-joining or even starting any of our fitness classes (to get that bikini body) please do so as soon as possible. Cancellation of classes with low numbers is now a very real possibility. The effervescent Julie Woodburn has one final course for this academic year, Chinese Cookery, starting 30th April for 3 weeks. The class will run at Cartmel Priory School 18:45 – 20:45. Julie will teach you how to source Chinese ingredients and you will leave the course with a wide range of fragrant dishes, plus recipes for many more. The scheme, which has been running for several years in West Cumbria, was launched here on May 30th at Lindale Village Hall, in an event headed up by Local PCSOs Howard Firth and Emma Forrester. The Year 5 and 6 children from Grange, Cartmel and Flookburgh Primary Schools were selected through a school-run project. The children were asked to design posters depicting what their local community means to them, and those lucky enough to be chosen are given Junior PCSO uniforms, and will each complete a workbook. The main aim of the project, which will run for 5 months, is to teach children about the role of the police within the local community.

Inspector Jon Sherlock said: “The purpose of the scheme is to encourage good citizenship and promote pride in the community. The scheme will also hopefully be part of a long-term sustainable solution to help prevent anti-social behaviour in the local communities. Young people can be drawn into anti-social

behaviour during summer months and it is something that we, as a Constabulary, proactively aim to prevent with diversionary activities and initiatives.” The group will meet again on 24th July, when the young recruits will work with National Rail and British Transport Police to learn the importance of behaving in a sensible and safe manner in and around the railway network. PCSO Emma Forrester would like to thank Lindale Village Hall for providing their hall as a venue for the first meeting and also the Spar for providing refreshments. A list of activities that the Neighbourhood Policing Teams will be conducting with their Junior PCSOs is viewable online at www. cumbria.police.co.uk/juniorpcso. If you follow @ulvandlakescops on Twitter, you can also follow the progress under the hashtag #juniorpcso.

Tim’s Column Just to warn you, over the next few months you may well experience a few delays when you are driving around on our roads. Please be patient, it really is in a good cause, as Cumbria County Council are planning to fill in the estimated 91,000 pot holes that currently make driving around here a bit scary at times. You don’t need me to tell you that our roads have been allowed to get into a rotten state. in fact when I was out knocking on doors in the recent European and District Council elections many of you told me how annoyed you were with the condition they had been allowed to get into, how dangerous you felt some of them were and how you worried about damaging your cars and bicycles as you travelled around. In fact you have been telling me this for a few years now that is why I worked to get the extra £5.9 million in funding from the Government for Cumbria County Council a couple of years ago. Sadly that was not enough and so we have just heard that another £4.85 million is heading in our direction. I will do what I can to ensure that as much of this comes to South Lakeland as possible. I don’t know whether this will be quite enough to get the roads back to the state we would all like them to be in but at least we can all look forward to smoother and safer journeys in future. Whilst on the subject of transport the Government has started the process of letting the franchises for the Furness Line in 2016. They already have some thoughts, mostly around switching some of the services that are currently under the Transpennine franchise into the Northern Rail franchise. However, they are consulting before any decisions are made and want to hear the thoughts of anyone who might be affected. You can give your views by completing a short online questionnaire at www.surveymonkey. com/s/7L2NGR7. Given how upset we all felt when the Government, albeit briefly as they rapidly changed their minds, took the West Coast franchise away from Virgin I think it would be great if as many people as possible made their opinions heard. Finally, I am sure that Grange Town Council are already on to this but just in case they have not yet heard, as part of the work that the Government is doing to support our High Streets with investment and rate discounts they have announced a national competition called the Great British High Street Awards. This is an award for the best High Streets in the country, there are six categories including one for coastal communities which I humbly suggest is the one Grange should go for. As ever if I can help you with these or any other issues then please write to me, Tim Farron, at Acland House, Smokehouse Yard, Stricklandgate, Kendal LA9 4ND or email me at tim@ timfarron.co.uk. Thanks for your support, Tim

County Matters At the next County Council Cabinet meeting recommendations will be put forward from the all party Scrutiny Board that we look again at Unitary Authority status here in Cumbria.

I would personally favour one Authority based away from Carlisle. This would save a huge amount of money by doing away with a massive tier of management and leaving our front line services in tact to provide a much more joined up and effective Council.

This would mean abolishing the six District and one County authority and forming one unified Council for either the whole area or possibly two for Cumbria.

We need all our local authorities to support this process and I hope that my District colleagues will be in agreement as well as the county cabinet.

Chamber of Trade The last meeting held on 16th June, showed a very healthy Chamber of Trade, with a further rise in members and their contributions, the committee will be able to continue to support charitable organisations. Our stall at the Edwardian Festival proved very popular, Pete and Ann successfully sold all their 5 gallons of homemade Lemonade and sweets, not 5 gallons of sweets of course only the Lemonade, we are very responsible at the Chamber. We were also pleased to hear our president won “Best Dressed”, well done Pete. The Chamber members present at the meeting agreed to a £100 pound donation to Park Road Gardens, of which the organisers do a fantastic job. With thanks to Liz Mitchell Parr and her hard work Grange has retained its Fair Trade Town status and this will continue till 2016.

Mayor’s Report

It seems only weeks ago that I was at the last Band Concert of 2013 but the new season has already begun.

Jackie and I attended the first concert on what turned out to be a very warm day. The Burneside Band were at their usual level of excellence, the sun shone and the crowds were out in force. In fact by the end there were folk sitting just about everywhere it was possible to sit, all enjoying the sunshine, the music and equally I suspect, the opportunity for an al-fresco ice cream! Our second appearance as Mayor and Consort was by the kind invitation of Grange Probus, who invited us to share their 25th Anniversary Celebrations with a delicious lunch at the Netherwood Hotel. It is wonderful to see that a group such as Probus can keep going for such a long period of time and I wish them well for the next twenty five years and beyond. And then there was the great enjoyment of the Edwardian Festival. It was so good to see

Our next County Council Neighbourhood Forum meeting will be in September when there will be a limited amount of grant funding available for distribution. If anyone would like any information or an application form to apply for a grant please contact our local engagement support officer Kelly Alty on 01539 713405 or via e-mail to kelly.alty@cumbria.gov.uk Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor for Grange Division.

The Chamber raised serious concerns about the recent Railway Survey which we are led to believe will reduce the service between Barrow and Lancaster, should anyone have more detailed news or knowledge we would love to hear from you. Finally you may have read that our President Pete had voiced concerns about Tesco coming to town, he would like to correct this by stating he only has concerns about the extra traffic it may attract on Kents Bank Road, not Tesco itself. The Chamber would like to invite Tesco to the next meeting, date and venue to be arranged, please contact Pete at Birchleigh for further details, to allow us to discuss several community projects. Unfortunately businesses are increasingly facing parking issues in the town and again we would ask the Town Council and South Lakeland District Council to attend a meeting to help solve some of these issues. Keeping local small businesses in the town should be a concern to us all; many local people are employed by these businesses.

the effort so many people had put in to make this a successful and enjoyable day for all those who attended was blessed with fine weather. It was also lovely to see so many people dressed in Edwardian costume, not least the winners of the various categories which Jackie and I had to judge. The winners of the best dressed stall, Grange W.I., really had worked very hard with both their stall and their own costumes. I really do think that having so many people dressed in costume adds a lot to the whole event, so thank you to all those who made the effort. I also loved the shiny, red bus which drove up and down the town, providing rides and fun for so many people. As usual, it was a very good day out.

This year, as is usual, the Mayor will be helping to raise money for charity through a variety of events. As part of this fundraising there will be a Christmas Mayor’s Fair on Saturday November 29th at the Victoria Hall. As well as a raffle, tombola and refreshments run by and on behalf of the Mayor there will be an opportunity for local charities and groups to have a stall in order to raise money

for their own funds. If your group are at all interested in doing so please get in touch with Sally Haines or myself. This and other events will be raising money for St Mary’s ‘Hospice at Home’ as well as Diabetes UK. The second is a very personal choice as I have Type 2 Diabetes myself. There will no Councillor surgery in July. The subject of future surgeries will be debated at the next Council meeting. Although, during the year we have been holding them, we Councillors have met with a number of local residents and helped them with a variety of concerns, there have been several Surgeries when we have had no-one attending. This is not a good use of Councillor time. If you have any ideas as to when you think Surgeries should be held, where they could be held and at what time, please do come to the next Council meeting and give us your thoughts at the ‘Have your say’ session. If you are unable to attend the meeting, please contact the Council Officers at the Victoria Hall. We really would like to hear your opinions on this matter. Tricia Thomas, Town Mayor

Junior reporter results

Well done to the junior reporters. We had a marvellous collection of over 30 entries. So many in fact that we decided to award a prize to each year group from years 2 to 6. All the entries were independently judged by a year 4 primary teacher from outside the area. We now have 5 prizes from Old Hall Farm at Bouth - one for each year group. Thanks very much to Old Hall Farm and Charlotte Sharphouse for their generosity in encouraging the junior writers. Well done to the winners and everyone who took part. We asked a second judge to read all the entries. Without any contact our two judges agreed on 3 out of the 5 winners. Well done to all.

Year 6 - Chloe Rylance My Walk by the Ghyll

Good use of paragraphs and some great vocabulary (drooled, cascading). The report moves along with use of time connectives and ends at the most important place; the sweetie shop! Well done Chloe.

Year 5 - Toby Warren My Residential

A short and exciting opening sentence to capture the reader. This leads onto a detailed description of the time spent on your residential. You have included quotes and adverbs to bring your report alive. I am so pleased you made it to the top of the mountain; great effort Toby.

Year 4 - Ben Meir My Residential

A solid introduction of who, what and where to set the scene. This is followed by a great use of time connectives and a descriptive account of your adventurous experience Ben - I’m glad you had a good time.

Year 3 - Bobby Davis Castle Head Residential

A good opening paragraph using the the whole set of who, what, why, where and when to put the reader in the picture. This is followed by a detailed and descriptive account, written in paragraphs, which allows the reader to follow your exciting report with ease. An excellent effort Bobby.

Year 2 - Emma Keast Our Ace Adventure

An exciting report making good use of paragraphs, dialogue and time connectives. Lots of description too, to keep the reader interested. Well done Emma.

My residential - Ben Meir

I am going to tell you about my residential at Blencathra and Coniston copper mines

Firstly we set off in the mini bus when we got to Blencathra we got shown to our rooms and made our beds. After that we did problem solving which was basically us playing games.one of the games was us making a little park.my group made ours in a bush. After that we did orienteering and I was with my friends and we had a lot of fun. Then we played basketball and we rolled down the hill and I nearly got bumped into and I got really muddy. For tea we had lasagne and it was the best lasagne ever and for pudding we had some sort of banana cake. I loved it but some people really didn’t like it. In the morning we had breakfast and we ordered it at tea so it would be ready for in the morning. I had egg and toast and some other things that I can’t remember. In the night we all couldn’t get to sleep because there was drip and drop noises and there was one room that could get to sleep. I guess they were very lucky. Before we went to bed we had a party in the big room and played hide and seek in the dark. After we went to the copper mines and it was really wet. We went ghyll scrambling and we got incredibly wet and we had to swim to get to the other side of the rock. It was really cold. At one point we had to jump in the water but me and my friend didn’t do it because we were really cold. After that we drove back and we really enjoyed the ride enjoying the view.

My walk by the ghyll - Chloe Rylance

On Saturday the 14th of June, Year 6 (Lindale CofE primary school) went to Great Langdale for a camping trip. I was one of them. During the long mini bus ride through Ambleside everyone opened the windows and waved to the passing pedestrians. We played sweet, sour or stupid. If they waved they were sweet, if they didn’t wave they were sour and if they didn’t see they were stupid. As we arrived at the campsite the excitement grew inside us. We passed the shop and we all drooled as are eyes skimmed the goodies inside. Next we set up camp. After that we got to the adventurous bit. Year 6 were going to walk up to Stickle Tarn!

The road was the boring bit however as we started to climb the hill we all new that it was going to be an amazing hike. A few of us (including me) raced ahead; waiting at certain points for the others. We just couldn’t keep our energy inside us. The more daring of us (I also did this) went up Stickle Ghyll; bounding from rock to rock, leaping over the cascading river. As we wandered the fells we found frogs, beetles and all sorts. Then we were finally there! Stickle Tarn. Some of us breathless, but not all. We paddled to cool of are feet and we drank and ate everything we had. Next it was time for the decent! A couple of us galloped down the hill but the less confident strolled down behind; it was up to us. We all found are way to the shop in the end. Most of us bought sweets but a few bought googly eyed pom poms or squishy aliens. And these were the most exciting things we did.

My Residential - Toby Warren It all started when we drove off in the bus. The journey was about one hour thirty minutes.

When we arrived the first challenge was making our beds then we rushed outside and played some cool games like build a park and orienteering then it was tea, tea was really good for a school trip place.

Then we played basketball and rolling down the hill. When that had all finished we were so tired, so Miss Poel told us to go to bed I chose jack to sleep with me. In the morning. Me and jack got dressed and went down to get breakfast I had a English meal but the toast was disgusting however I still enjoyed most of it, after that it was low ropes we had to take turns in watching our friend closely and point out which way to go, I didn’t find that bit very interesting. Then we hopped back in the bus and drove off to a mountain hut near the Coniston copper mines. My friend sitting next to me needed a pee fortunately he could hold on.

When we arrived it was pouring down with rain so we rushed inside the beds were all attached. Then Miss called us down to go on a mountain hike. A quarter of the way up we stopped and played camouflage then we started to walk again, ‘Look there is a mine!’ Said my friend Connal. Then we stopped, Miss said whoever doesn’t want to go to the top can come back.

I chose to go up along with the rest of my friends. The hike up was kind of hard but we reached the top. After the walk back down I rested in my bed. In the morning we drove back.

Our Ace Adventure - Emma Keast

To begin our adventure at Castle Head we walked there very slowly along the Back Road. It was on the 5th June 2014 with Year 2 and 3. When we got there we played on the front lawn of Castle Head. We had a drink and a cake and a biscuit. They tasted yummy. Then Becky came and said, “It’s time to make our beds.” Everyone went hyper. Then we had to settle down. It was time to go to our rooms. Our rooms looked awesome. We put our big bags away and started making our beds. The bed cover kept popping off it was really funny.

After that it was teatime the food was scrumptious.

Next we did a night walk. We got blind folded and followed the rope it was so scary. Finally we put our pyjamas on and took a teddy to have hot chocolate with marshmallows and cake. After that we went back to our bedrooms and chatted and read books. We went to bed.

In the morning we did orienteering

with the letters. Next we went to Humphrey Head and rock climbed across the rocks. The funniest bit was Mr Shuttleworth getting stuck in the cave and shouting, “Help! Help!” While I was at my residential I thought it was a very friendly place where everyone looked after you and made sure you had fun. I think Castle Head is a brilliant place for a residential. I give it 10 out of 10.

Castle Head Residential Time - Bobby Davies

On the 5th to 6th June Year 2 and 3 from Lindale School went to Castle Head to start and epic adventure... When we first got there we had a run around and explored the gardens. Delicious cakes and drinks were served and we ate and drank them quickly. Then Becky came and we had a quick tour around (Castle Head is enormous). All the boys were in one room and the girls were in another room.

It was tea time next and for tea there was soup (vegetarian) chicken pie or jacket potatoes. After that we made our beds. Us boys messed about and threw teddies about. Then Miss Massey came in noisily and told

us to get ready for our night trail so we did. On the night trail we got pitch black blindfolds and made a conga line to a place with a rope. We followed the rope to a place deep in the forest where we were allowed to take our blind folds off. We moved onto the garden and smelt different mints. We could also taste mints if we wanted to. I chose to and it was delicious but four people chose not to. Finally we went back to the house to get our pyjamas on and teddies and we went to the library for games, hot chocolate,

marshmallows and lots of fun together. Then we went to bed for five minute chatting. After a long time we went to sleep at about 11o’clock.

In the morning we woke up and had breakfast, packed up, got dressed and quickly took pillows out of pillow cases. We went to Humphrey Head where we did rock hopping, squeezing through tiny holes and caves. I think you should go to Castle Head with your school because it is and amazing place to go. I would give it 10 out of 10.

Society Round-up Grange Lions June is a busy month for Grange and District Lions with plans progressing well for our AM-AM Golf Tournament at Grange Over Sands golf club. This is held in July and proceeds will go to St Mary’s Hospice. If any golfers would like to take up the last few places in this very enjoyable and worthwhile day then please contact Peter Clough on 015395 32048. Several Lions manned a stall at The Edwardian Festival and joined in the spirit of the day which always brings plenty of locals and visitors alike to Park Gardens. The Old Vicarage Residential Home was also part of our June activities as we helped with their annual Garden Party... The Strawberry Teas are very much enjoyed by all, so thank you to all those that helped to make this a good day for the residents. Another June activity was the School’s Football competition. This has become a very successful annual event organised by Grange Lions for the football teams of all the local Primary schools. Medals and plaques are presented to participants and winners. A big thank you from Grange Lions goes to Cartmel Priory Secondary school for their help and use of facilities and playing field. If anyone would like to join in our activities or simply come along to see what we do then please contact Peter on the above number or Barbara on 01539532780

Trefoil Guild At a meeting in Witherslack, life in Dubai was described by Lois Quinn to members. As her visits had spread over the years she mentioned the many changes that had occurred. We afterwards enjoyed a tea provided by Hilda Jarvis. Details of the next meeting can be ascertained from Molly Inglis on Tel: 33141

Witherslack W.I. There was a good attendance at the June Meeting. Orders for 2015 calendars and diaries were taken. Pauline Hodgson gave a report on the AGM in Leeds which she had very much enjoyed. The speakers were Peter and Brian, volunteers for the Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service. They gave a very interesting and informative talk about safety in the home. They

advised on smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and fire blankets, and what to do last thing at night. Very important.......Close all doors. Switch off everything you can. Make sure you know where the door keys are ( and always in the same place). It is helpful to have a phone in the bedroom. And if you have to shout for help....don`t shout HELP but FIRE. They showed some short videos which demonstrate the horrifying speed with which a fire can spread in the house. Next meeting; July 8th “It shouldn`t happen to a nurse “ part 2 with Eileen Belshaw. Visitors welcome Tel: 52302

The Embroiderers’ Guild North Lonsdale Branch Priscilla Jones arrived this month complete with her delicate and charming “3D tea items” plus some new work she has been developing with porcelain and found objects. Priscilla showed us how to make a wire frame, that we would be attaching our fabric to with hot wax, giving a pretty delicate appearance. We all started bending our wire into the shapes of cups, jugs, saucers and flowers. When we had made the frames we cut up small pieces of chiffon or silk and applied them to the structure with hot melted wax leaving interesting gaps. When the wax was set we embellished our pieces with stitch, buttons, beads and anything else of interest. Our members were delighted with their delicate pieces and most were able to take a completed piece home. A big thank you goes to Priscilla for a good day. The next meeting is Tuesday 1st July when we will be using encaustic wax with Sue Tyldesley. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month and new members are welcome. If interested please contact the secretary Anne Covell on 01539 737049.

Allithwaite and Cartmel W.I.

Allithwaite & Cartmel WI had another busy month in May with many members taking part in the Holker Garden Festival both as entrants and helping as stewards. The ‘lunch club’ had an enjoyable meal at the Hampsfell House Hotel and the craft group met on its usual afternoon, finalising the display for Holker. Both the Ramblers’ planned walk along the Windermere shore and the ‘Out & About’ group’s day out on the Windermere steamers had to be cancelled owing to bad weather, but the Ambler’s enjoyed their stroll along Grange Promenade followed by coffee and cake. At the meeting on 3rd June, Caroline Goleckza gave a very interesting and amusing talk entitled ‘Makeover Magic’. She did touch on the range of organic cosmetics that her company has developed but the talk mainly concentrated on style and colour of Grange: 015395 33550 clothes which was very informative. Also at The next meeting is Barrow, Dalton & Ulverston on Tuesday 1st July at 2.00pm at Allithwaite www.littleandcaine.co.uk

Grange and District U3A Around 50 new members have joined Grange U3A this year and in order to make them welcome two “Cake and Cuppa” afternoons were held at the URC Hall in June. Committee members and Interest Group co-ordinators attended to chat to the new members and to let them know what opportunities there are to get involved in a wide range of social and educational activities. New ideas for new interest groups are always welcome as are volunteers to help run them. The monthly meeting on 17th June in the Victoria Hall was addressed by Lady GrenfellBaines who spoke under the title “The Last Train to Tomorrow”. This was her first hand account of how Sir Nicholas Winton brought 670 Czechoslovakian children to safety in London in 1939. Her fascinating story was illustrated by photographs and archive documents and included the 2009 70th anniversary train which retraced the route with many of the original passengers and their relatives. Information about Grange and District U3A and its activities can be found at www.u3asites. org.uk/Grange in a ring binder in the resources room of Grange library and in leaflets at the Grange Information Centre.

Newton and Field Broughton WI The meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI on June 11th started with the business. This included the news that their co-operative entry at the Holker Garden festival had won 3rd prize and a lion knitted by a member had won 2nd in the craft section. 22 members had enjoyed lunch at Kendal College on June 4th. Numbers were finalised fir the visit to Old Hall Farm, Bouth on the evening of June 18th. The speaker for the evening was Stephen Watson. He started his talk on the Art of Origami by giving a history of the subject from the earliest known examples to its present day use in space. He first became interested in paper folding at the age of 8. All the members were encouraged to choose 2 squares of paper, then he proceeded to teach them how they can be folded to make a great little box with a lid. Throughout the evening he gave an insight into his work with various groups, particularly children, with many amusing stories to tell. He had taken a fascinating selection of articles made using origami which several members discussed with him after the, ‘fold-along’. The meeting in July will be on the 9th, when the Town Crier of Kendal will talk about his duties. It will take place at Lindale Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm

Cartmel and District Flower Club Congratulations to our President, Joan Bentley, on receiving the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. This was for work for charity carried out over many years. Anyone who knows Joan will realise how hard she works, and we at the Flower Club are all very proud of her. On Monday 16th June we had a very pleasant afternoon. Arthur McDonald created six arrangements with a variety of flowers in some interesting containers. The theme was “Let Joy be Undefined”. He said that joy could not be defined and that it meant different things to different people. Our next meeting is on Monday 14th July, a week earlier than usual. We will be having a demonstration by our own Joan Bentley entitled “Surprise,Surprise”. There will also be a competition for all club members for The Groocock Cup. The title will be “Summer Splendour”, so come along and have a go. The meeting starts at 2pm in Cartmel Village Hall and as always visitors are welcome.

Grange Old Tyme Dance Club We have just come to the end of another very successful and enjoyable year’s dancing at Lindale. We’ve enjoyed several, ‘jacob’s join’, evenings; special birthday celebrations; a Christmas dinner dance; a valentines evening and a St George’s evening which raised £62 for the British Legion. Our next event during the Summer break is a trip, by coach, to Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Whilst we are on holiday during the Summer, two of our members: Norma and Norman Cavin are running a beginners/ improvers class on our Tuesday evenings at Lindale Village Hall. This is from 7-9pm and costs just £3 per person. So why not come along and learn some popular sequence dances so that you can confidently join us when we start again on 2nd September. Keep dancing….

Grange Drama The Methodist Hall, Kents Bank Road, will be the venue for Grange Drama’s studio performances of Chekhov’s two one-act plays ‘The Bear’ and ‘The Proposal’ from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th July at 7.30pm. Chekhov described these pieces as jests. We might call them farces, but for those in doubt they are suitable for children! They have proved very popular with amateur companies, and the studio setting will bring them very close up! Unreserved seats at £4, to include a programme, are currently available from the Tourist Information Centre. They will also be sold on the door each night. All profits from this production will be donated to St. Marys Hospice so please come along, have an enjoyable evening whilst supporting this worthwhile local charity.

Grange in Bloom Group On behalf of the town we have submitted an entry to this year’s Cumbria in Bloom competition. In preparation for judging the group has replanted the tubs in the town with a golden theme to mark the Golden Anniversary of Britain in Bloom. We have also been working on improving the planting at the station and have created a golden themed garden on the station corner. We have added more plants to the border adjoining the station and will be mulching them with pebbles to create a seaside garden and hopefully supress the weeds. We can all help make the town look it’s best for judging day by ensuring the streets are free of litter and weeds, and businesses can help by putting up floral displays and keeping them well watered. We are grateful to all who help especially with watering and maintaining the tubs. This year the Promenade Gardens and Veterans Garden are entered in the It’s Your Neighbourhood Award , both Grange Primary School and the Pre School group have entered the schools award and Thornleigh Hotel is entered in the Tourism award. The Grange in Bloom judges will be touring Grange sometime during the week beginning July 21st to judge the floral displays. The Group is always looking for new volunteers – gardening skills are not essential. Contact Jan Tomlinson 36919 if you would like to join us.

Coffee Club In June Stuart Harling described his pilgrimage to Israel in 2011. His initial picture was of Jerusalem seen from the Mount of Olives through a mesh of barbed wire.. a reflection that this Holy Land remains a site of continuing conflict and bitterness. The tour was full of activity visiting 49 Different places in 11 days to tourist and

archaeological sites such as the Dead Sea, Golan Heights, Masada, Qumran and the Holocaust Museum, as well as to sites of Biblical significance. Churches built on most of these latter sites made it difficult to imagine Jesus’ experience of them. However there were havens of peace and tranquillity such as the Garden Tomb, the Room of the Last Supper and the beautiful modern Church of the Beatitudes. Israel and especially Jerusalem is sacred to three great monotheistic religions – Islam, Judaism and Christianity. Jerusalem’s St George Cathedral, smaller than Cartmel Priory, demonstrates how few Christians live There. We were left realising the need to ‘Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.’ On July 15th at Abbot Hall Richard and Lindsay Flintoff talk about ‘Changing Thailand’, their home country. Coffee at 10am precedes the meeting at 10.30am. Everybody welcome.

An afternoon tea was enjoyed by all the ladies after play. The Gents Captain’s Day is to be held on Saturday 21st June and this will be reported in the next issue.

St. Charles Three amazing weekends I have experienced – Workington and Grange to celebrate my Golden Jubilee of Priesthood and at Formby where I shared in and concelebrated at the 1st Communion and Confirmation of Finnbarr, the youngest of one of my niece’s children. Each was a great celebration of faith in family and parish life. The parish excelled itself with a buffet to feed an army. The music group from Lancaster and Blackpool created a background for a very lively liturgy which could be heard down Kents Bank Road. It was an uplifting experience and St Pauls Parish Hall and outside space was

a fitting setting for, as I have said, a magnificent buffet. To everyone – a very sincere thank you for their prayers, cards, letters, emails, generosity and kind support. It is back to normal now. A baptism of a Polish baby, preparation for a wedding in Poland and the birth of Isha-Anna, a baby girl whose parents, Ginsi & Deepu are from Kerala – the international element of St Charles! The parish prayed with and for Tom Rawcliffe who received his 1st Holy Communion on the Feast of Corpus Christi. The Men’s Group have had two interesting evenings – one to the Bay Rescue base at Flookburgh and a fascinating talk on the Holy Land by Stewart Harling. Rev Richard Teal conducted the service with humour and sensitivity. The band was composed of the Ulverston Methodist Church ‘Ichthus Brass’, augmented by Salvation Army bandsmen from Millom. One regular supporter and conductor of the band for this event, Noel Brocklebank, sadly

The Ladies Group likewise have been busy with a flower decorating demonstration and feeding themselves at the Pheasant. Building has started on the rear store room. It is not a big job and Mark Walmsley hopes to finish it quickly. (So do I!!) The Songs of Praise with an excellent choir was a fitting conclusion to the Edwardian weekend which was blessed with good weather. It was a pleasant and welcome change to get some sun on one’s back in mid June. Praise the Lord for small mercies. That is everything, I think, for this month. If you are travelling – travel safely – St Christopher can be a good help. God Bless. Fr P. had died in April. He was remembered with love and joy. In his place, Rev. Tony Wells led the bandsmen and women. As people disembarked, a collection was taken for WaterAid. The total for this was £355. Thank you everyone who helped and contributed in any way.

Prayer Space In Schools space encouraged young people to experience prayer by doing, and were encouraged to pray in a variety of creative ways by visiting one of six prayer stations.

On the 16th – 20th June 2014 Cartmel Priory School played host to a prayer space. The space was organised by Chris Mason (Windermere Deanery Network Youth

The best remedy for discontent is to count your blessings:

Count your blessings instead of your troubles; Count your gains instead of your losses; Count your joys instead of your woes; Count your friends instead of your foes; Count your courage instead of your fears; Count your health instead of your wealth; and count on God instead of yourself! If you look at what you don’t have in life, you don’t have anything. If you look at what you do have in life, you have everything.

The Help Association

The space was open during lunch and break times, and up to forty young people came along to ‘hang out’. The whole school also had a lesson on prayer during the week. One of the stations, called ‘Big Questions’, asked young people to consider the question that ‘ if there was a God what question would you ask him?’. Another station encouraged young people to think about their hopes and dreams. There was even a station based around the world cup, where young people were encouraged think or pray about issues that affect one of the 32 countries who are taking part in the World Cup. They could use post it notes to write their prayers on and stick it in to a world map or write their prayers onto a football. One young person described his prayer space experience as “being peaceful”, whilst several felt it “gave them an opportunity to get rid of their worries.”

St Paul’s, Grange

An augmented choir of over thirty voices, conducted by Charles Edmondson enhanced the Churches Together in Grange & District Edwardian Songs of Praise service held at St Paul’s during the town’s Edwardian weekend. Representatives from the local churches read out their favourite readings from the Bible and chose their best-loved hymns for the congregation to sing. A wonderful joyous occasion and enjoyed by the many who attended.

Anyone wishing to learn more about St Paul’s need look no further than the church’s

Bach to Bond

Many of you will know the names of Grace Heap and Glen Giffney, as they have been a prominent name on the music and drama scene in Grange, since they were about 4 years old. They have finally come together to give you a delightful evening of music entitled, ‘From Bach to Bond’. The show will feature a full variety of music of songs from Bach right through to Skyfall at the end of the show. This evening promises to be not only fabulous, but emotional too, as it is time for Grace to fly the nest. After 14 years of performing at Victoria Hall, in various roles, Grace is heading off to London to study at the Musical Theatre Academy. The performance will take place at Victoria Hall on Friday

Earlier this year, we shared details of the students’ involvement in the national Young Enterprise project, run in conjunction with Grange Rotary. 13 pupils participated in the project which formed part of the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness course, which prepares pupils for later life by developing a range of skills. Pupils set up a business which required them to make and market products, which included including Message Teds, Cartmel Comfort Cards, Music O’Clocks and A Kits. completed with Year 5 and 6 spending 3 days in the Isle of Arran and Year 3 and 4 at Rydal Hall. We held a wonderfully creative Arts Week which has been based on light. The children have made lanterns and shadow puppets and taken part in photography, pastel and craft activities. The highlight was Abbott Hall bringing Winifred Nicholson’s ‘Candle in the Window’, which was exhibited in school for the children and public to come and see as part of the ‘Art on Tour’ project. competition from many other South Lakeland Schools, including schools with teams of pupils much older and more experienced than themselves. They were also awarded the prize for Most Innovative Product for the A Kit. This is an animation kit which includes a web-cam, instructions, figures and a backdrop in fairy tale and monster themes and was designed by Emilio. Emilio was nominated by the School for consideration for the ‘Journey Award’ at the North East & Cumbria regional ceremony and he attended the awards ceremony in Gateshead on Thursday 12 June. We are delighted to say that he won. He has been shortlisted for the national award ceremony in London – one of 3 pupils in the whole country! Well done Emilio. Everyone at school is very proud of you. We are sure this will stand you in good stead for your computer/gaming career! Thanks again to everyone involved in the project, particularly Grange Rotary for sponsoring the Young Enterprise Programme.

May, have also had a residential with a focus on developing leadership skills. Again - a brilliant weekend. In the next few weeks year 6 will be busy with a number of visits including a trip to ‘Dinosnores’ at the Natural History Museum London before planning their ‘Leaver’s assembly’ for end of term. All our children in Years 2 to 6 have taken part in the La’al Sing at the Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal. We are also busy polishing up our ‘Times tables’ ready for the Cartmel peninsula schools ‘Times Tables challenge’. Thank you to Diane Fenton for organising. Our school is signed up to the ‘Mathletics’ programme where children can develop their mathematics skills. Congratulations to William, Elise, Joseph, Hannah, James, Bobby, Sophie J. and Emma who have all gained ‘gold’ certificates in Mathletics. We have continued to build on our work as a ‘Lead School for Computer Science’. Mrs O’Kane, our computing teacher, has been delivering training for schools from across the South Lakeland in the new computing curriculum. We are really grateful to our school PTA who have been raising funds for ipads with a very successful fun run and bbq at Castle Head. This Year has been very successful as we have won the Bishop’s Award. Our children and parishioners will be attending a celebration at Carlisle Cathedral to receive the award; the children will be delivering a short presentation with the Bishop and Diocese colleagues. Finally our Summer Music Concert takes place on Friday 11th July which allows our brass players, ukulele, guitars, violinists, piano, woodwind and soloists to perform together before the end of term.

Grange Primary

Grange CE Primary School has received the highest level achievable regarding the behaviour and care of its pupils in their recent Ofsted inspection on 15th and 16th May. Mrs Summers, the headteacher, commented “I am delighted with the report which clearly celebrates the achievements and the special qualities of our school. As we know Grange is a good school which aims to be outstanding in everything it does! The hard work and commitment of the whole school community has been recognised–it really is a team effort and each contribution is equally valued. The teachers, teaching assistants and support staff, governors, parents and carers, volunteers and friends of the school all enable our children to succeed and continually improve.” Ofsted reported ‘The behaviour and safety of pupils are outstanding. Pupils come to school very eager to learn and use every moment in school very productively. They are confident, well rounded and very capable young people who leave the school extremely well prepared for the next step in their education.’ The report grades the school as good overall and outstanding in behaviour and safety. Our Years 5 and 6 pupils have just returned from their Residential Trip to Ridley Hall, Northumberland where they’ve had a packed programme of activities including museum and city visits, trip to a water park and a visit to Durham Cathedral and we welcomed our visitor from Nepal from our Partner School in Sikles’, Headteacher Gehendra Gurung.

Flookburgh Primary

Children and staff at Flookburgh School have been very busy this summer term. KS1 children went for an educational visit to the Seaside, and they only had to walk a bit round the corner to appreciate our “local” sea – Sandgate, which was fabulous for a beach trip! Nursery, Class 1& 2 took part in lots of lovely ‘Pirate’ activities. Our last Co-operative Learning Morning was all about Safety. We have met some very interesting people and learnt lots of useful skills: how to get out of the sinking sands or what’s a ‘stranger-danger’ phrase. Our usual Leavers Service was linked with the local community event which is sadly approaching - a goodbye time for our ‘spiritual chief’ – Rev Etherington who is retiring and we will have a special service on Sunday 6th July, which

for everybody is warmly invited. We are happy to announce that Mrs Procter is going to keep looking after our school next academic year. It’s been great to have all her courage and support while Mr Brooksbank is absent from school due to serious illness. Mrs Procter says: “I am enjoying working in such a positive atmosphere at Flookburgh CE Primary! “ We continue to strive for success and keep to our school vision.

Dear Editor I was so sad to read in your June issue about the death of Mr Johnstone. He used to be a regular customer where I worked in the co-op. What a wonderful man. He had a very good memory and told some inspiring stories about his time in the Dambusters. A true hero. I used to say to him we should have a red carpet for you coming in our store. What a modest, kind, true gentleman he was. I will never forget him. I would also like to say how sad I was to hear about the death of ‘little’ Margaret. She used to come in the store with her husband and then, sadly, on her own. I shall miss her, especially waving to her at her kitchen window while I was walking the dog. I spoke to her not long ago, and did not think I would never see her again. Rest in peace Archie and Margaret. Elaine Halloran Grange over Sands

Dear Editor The coming to Grange of Tesco is a great pity (and yet another example of the town being developed against the expressed wishes of the town council and residents -supermarkets, large housing estates, potential charges for on-street parking). Part of what makes the town so attractive to visitors and residents alike is the wide variety of family-owned businesses and the absence of those chain shops which can be seen everywhere else all over the country. Supermarkets like Tesco and Booths bring nothing to the town which isn’t already here but they do risk taking away the very uniqueness that constitutes the charm of the place. Sure, many people like to shop in supermarkets but they only have to travel a few miles to do so at Aldi, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda or they can take advantage of online shopping. Readers may remember a group set up in 2002 which managed to stave off the advent of Booths for a number of years under the slogan “KOGS” or “Keep Our Grange Special”. Please note that it also stands for “Keep Out Greedy Supermarkets” but, most importantly now, it must also stand for “Keep Open Grange Shops” and only you, dear Grange Now readers, can do this by using them as much as possible. Already, at the present time, there are 4/5 empty shops -is this the result of the threat of the supermarkets? Judith Shapland Grange over Sands

Dear Editor My friend and I have recently been on holiday staying at Abbot Hall, Kents Bank, and we did some walking, Arnside Knott, etc and several walks along the seafront to Grange. We thought the gardens were absolutely beautiful, they lifted our hearts and made us so happy. I thought I would like to write to you to say thank you all so much especially when they told us at the Tourist Office that you were all volunteers. Your gardens are a great credit to you all and your work gives much pleasure to so many people. We are both in our 80’s but still gardening. Mrs Jean Holmes and Madge Collendge Poulton Le Fylde

You may lose your decision making ability and become vulnerable to outside influences. You might even be silly enough to get remarried and lose some on divorce or if you die during the celebrations. Some of these risks can be planned against using Powers of Attorney and appropriate Will planning. But not all of them. You know what they say about death and taxes. So give it all to your kids now! But hang on, where is the incentive for them to look after you in your later years if they already have all the money? What if they just fall out with you? What if they spend it all, or lose it in a casino, or run up debts and then have it taken from them. What about the daughter in law that you never quite liked?

If you’re stuck for ideas for keeping the kids amused over the summer holidays try going online.

If your son dies and she inherits then she could end up owning half your house! Not nice.

There’s a lot more to it than just films and games with many exciting and interactive online science and nature projects available as well as arts and crafts activities. And it’s a great way to find out about playschemes and holiday activities happening locally that you can join.

So can you plan to protect your assets for your children without risking being left out in the cold?

If you’d like faster broadband to help with entertaining the kids over the summer holidays Kencomp can help as we specialise in providing superfast broadband to towns and rural communities throughout Cumbria. 01539 898145 www.kencomp.net

After all, who is your number 1 priority? I think it is probably you.

Yes you can. I will give you some ideas in next month’s Legal Talk. If the suspense is too much, give me a call on (015395) 33316 and make a no obligation appointment to talk to a qualified solicitor. Grange Preschool This half term we have been enjoying the beautiful weather: getting our sensory container garden ready for Cumbria in Bloom and exploring the labyrinth as well as having fun in the playpark.

We are looking forward to Sports Day and a Teddy Bears’ picnic before we finish for Summer. Thank you to all who supported our stall at the Edwardian Fair, especially Mary and Emma from Rhymetime who donated soft toys. Thank you to Jane for donating tubs for our porch garden; everyone contributing to our Co-op collection tins and those

Small Wonders Childcare

It’s all change outside Lindale Pre-School Nursery, where we have been very busy revamping the garden and play areas to give children lots of chances to enjoy the sunshine. Additions include a great Willow Den, which was very kindly built for us by Castle Head Field Centre, and a Mud Kitchen, generously sponsored by Graham Simpson of Machine Care. We are also hugely grateful for the support of the Taylor Newton Hibbert Trust, whose grant has helped us to revamp the garden area. To one side of the Nursery there is also now a covered outdoor area, which means that children can get out even when the rain is pouring down!

Acorn Montessori

The children at Acorn Montessori have been enjoying a busy term. Their first trip was a morning in the woods to see the amazing bluebells and discover first hand many other signs of Spring. They have also been to Abbot Hall Art Gallery to look at the

café and ice cream parlours outside and making price labels to sell things. We made shopping lists for cakes, bought the ingredients at the village shop, then made and sold them to parents. We have also been on trips out around the village including to the wonderful refurbished village playground, are visiting Ford Park in Ulverston and holding our annual Sports Day. Lindale Pre-School Nursery has places available from September, when there will be some important changes to give parents more flexibility about their childcare.

range of paintings and participate in activities linked to them. The children are looking forward to visits from a doctor, a dentist, a policeman and others, as part of their current topic, “People Who Help Us”. Acorn Montessori is an independent Nursery School in Allithwaite, established in 1993 and prides itself in exceptional education for children rising 3 to 5 years.
