Christmas Carols with Flookburgh Band

Editor Letter Apparently we are to become the 'Northern Powerhouse.' I'm not sure what that means but with all the cuts to police, libraries, fire stations, bus services, youth groups and so on I feel more inclined to agree with the Liverpool Mayor who describes us as the 'Northern Slaughterhouse.' Let's hope common sense prevails with regards to preserving important local services. On a happier note readers will be delighted to hear that the Boxes of Hope will now have left for Romania, and Boris the duck has found a mate. Read more on page 3. The Grange Now office will be closed from 21st December to 4th January inclusive. Our final deadline of the year is on 15th December and will be delivered out to you from 30th December. This issue to full to the brim with Christmas events, notices and things to do over the festive season. I would like to send a very big thank you to Glenn, Kerstin, Sarah and Sharon for working with terrific dedication and good humour all year to deliver Grange Now. We would all like to wish our readers a very Happy Christmas. I hope you enjoy the Christmas issue.

There are at least 3 opportunities for you to see the fantastic Flookburgh Band this Christmas. Kicking off with Grange Extravaganza on Saturday 5th December. The band will be on hand to play all your festive favourites at, not only the Extravaganza but also in the evening at the 69th lighting of Grange Christmas tree. Their eagerly awaited annual Christmas Carol Concert will take place on Saturday 12th December. Tickets for the concert, which takes place in Victoria Hall at 7.30pm, are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children, including refreshments. Tickets are available from Grange Information Centre, Cockles in

Beavers help top up the foodbank store Members of the 1st Grange and Cartmel Beavers group have helped to stock the shelves at the Windermere and District Foodbank in the build-up to Christmas.

We know the actual rhyme is ‘November’ but it’s the 5th of December that it’s all happening around here. The 5th Christmas Extravaganza, organised by the Chamber of Trade, starts at 10am and with so much going on around the town there is literally something for everyone. New for this year is a traditional pancake stall and, of course, there are some familiar favourites such as fairground rides, birds of prey, Taffy Thomas the storyteller, Evsie the caricaturist, bongo balloons, mulled wine, Flookburgh Brass Band, zumba dancers, and not forgetting the main man himself, Santa. The day culminates in the lighting of the Christmas tree at 6pm.

Fourteen six to eight-year-olds delivered 15kg of supplies they had collected as part of Scout Community Week, the initiative which has replaced the old Bob a Job tradition.

Beaver leader Claire Pearson said: “The children each brought an item of food to the collection as part of Scout Community Week but instead of simply sending the supplies to Foodbank, they were really excited to visit the warehouse to see what happens behind the scenes. “This meant weighing the food which is the way the foodbank monitors contributions and then searching for the sell-by date on each item before writing this in bold figures to ensure only the best is distributed.”

Foodbank project manager Magda Khan said: “The build-up to Christmas is always a busy time for the foodbank and it was great not only to receive the children’s contributions but to see how keen they were to experience how we sort the food to distribute to people in need. With more than a million people, including

Remember, remember the 5th of December!

The tree festival

Grange and Cartmel Beavers at work behind the scenes at the Windermere and District Foodbank with assistant Beaver leaders Janine Hunter-Lowe (left) and Juliet Baddeley (right) and leader Claire Pearson. nearly 400,000 children, receiving food parcels from foodbanks nationwide in the last year compared with just over 900,000 in the previous 12 months, we’re expecting a heavy demand during the next few weeks.” The food parcels, issued by the foodbank for vouchers distributed by a range of frontline professionals, include at least three days’ supply of nutritionally

balanced non-perishable food. And as a special treat for Christmas, the foodbank looks for seasonal non-food contributions to add that special sparkle to the festive occasion.

The next appeal will be on Sunday, 13th December, in time for Christmas. The collection will take place, as usual, at the Meeting Room of St Paul's Parish Church, between 1pm and 3pm.

At the same time, 10am, the tree festival at St. Paul's, Grange officially starts and will be open from 10am - 4pm every day (except Christmas and Boxing Day). The Christmas fair will also take place on this day, between 10am - 4pm with nine stalls (and cafe) in church, supporting both church and local charities.

Christmas tree lighting

The 69th Christmas Tree lighting will take place at 6.30pm but the fun starts at 6pm. The tree, which is situated opposite Hazelmere Bakery, looks wonderful when all lit up, and the lighting ceremony sees people of all ages coming together to sing carols, see Santa and generally join in the fun. It really is the start of the festive season for Grange.

At the time of reading this the Christmas shoeboxes will be on their way to the children of Romania. The volunteers are also hoping to go to new areas this year and we will bring you news of that next month. The generosity of local people is always a heartwarming thing to see. Despite their protestations, we would like to thank Izzy Thorne and Alison Miller for all the wonderful knitting.

They have produced gorgeous little woollen hats (from the pattern on the Boxes of Hope website) and really colourful blankets from knitted squares sewn together. They have already started planning, and knitting, for the 2016 shoebox campaign.

We would also like to thank Rose, Brian and Nicola of The Curiosity Shop for their kind donation of a box of new toys to go with the shoeboxes.

We’re delighted to announce that Boris, the Muscovy duck from the duck pond, has found a mate. Andrew Duddle of Apple Garden Services heard about Boris and got in touch with Joyce King of Board Hall Farm, Broughton. He has bought a muscovy and very kindly donated it to the duck pond. Boris’ lady friend arrived on Monday 2nd November and she has been seen following Boris around. Andrew told Grange Now: “I named her ‘Doris’. I hated seeing Boris all on his own and it’s great to see them both sitting together next to the memorial.”

Local residents, Jim and Kath Meadowcroft, who have been feeding Boris every day since he arrived got in touch to say: “ We have been to feed Boris today, but he has no interest in food because he has a mate. They were both preening, and she was flapping her lovely unclipped wings, and following him. We hope it works out”. Jim and Kath, have named her Olga. So let’s put it to the vote. Please get in touch, by post or email (details on page 2) to say whether you like ‘Boris and Doris’ or ‘Boris and Olga’.

Residents are invited to comment on the issues and options that the future Arnside and Silverdale Development Plan could address. South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) is working with Lancaster City Council on a dedicated Development Plan for the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

This will form part of both authorities’ Local Plans. It will identify sites for new housing and employment to meet local needs and will set out planning policies to ensure that development reflects the AONB designation. Investment Matters

By Andrew Troughton APFS, CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER

As we approach the festive period and look forward to a New Year it is a good opportunity to look back over the previous twelve months and reflect on what has happened to ones finances. At IIA we also review the year that has past. A large proportion of new clients we have had the pleasure to work with during 2015 are those with existing investments, pensions, ISAs etc that now require professional ongoing management. Financial markets and legislation rarely remain the same for long periods, but constantly move and evolve. In the same way, your investments will not remain static – everyday volatility will not only affect your portfolio’s overall value, it will also alter the balance of assets within it; what you originally invested in may look quite different today as companies change focus and investment funds re-align their strategies. Working out the ideal structure of your investments on ‘day one’ isn’t only the first step - it is vital to monitor your portfolio to make sure it continues to meet your long-term needs. Of course, your life is unlikely to stand still either.

As the years go by, your circumstances – and your long-term goals – are likely to evolve, depending on your family and your income situations, your changing tolerance for risk and your need for capital growth, income or a mixture of the two.

It is therefore vitally important to review your portfolio regularly to ensure your investments remain suitable and relevant to you and that they are generally performing as you would expect. A regular check and ‘maintenance’ as and when required will help to keep your portfolio in good shape; working with a Financial Planner will ensure your finances remain focused on your long term goals. Finally, we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

The comments in this Editorial are only general and should not be taken as specific advice. It is important that you seek independent advice before taking any action on the above, or any other, subjects. It should be noted that the value of some investments can fall as well as rise therefore you may get back less than originally invested. Past performance is not necessarily a guide to the future. What would you do if you had a power cut? Top tips in a power cut: • Keep your freezer and fridge door closed to prevent defrosting • Leave a light on so you know when power is restored • Use a battery operated or wind-up torch. If you don’t have access to either, please take care when using candles • Check on your elderly or sick neighbours and relatives • Make sure electrical appliances, such as cookers, electric fires etc are turned off • Join Electricity North West’s Priority Service Register if you need extra support electricitynorthwest.co.uk/priority • If you need any advice or information, contact Electricity North West at any time.

Electricity North West spends millions every year to maintain and upgrade the network, to prevent any unexpected power cuts. However, sometimes the local network can be affected by conditions outside of their control, such as extreme weather. If you do experience any unexpected power cuts this winter,

Electricity North West are available on the phone or online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help get your power restored as quickly as possible. Electricity North West also offer a Priority Services Register for vulnerable customers such as those who are medically dependant on electricity. Locals queue for new store opening

Arnside on call fire service under threat Under proposals published by Cumbria County Council the Arnside retained fire station would be shut down and sold off, and the fire engine based at the station would be decommissioned.

the nearest appliance. This doesn’t matter if it belongs to Cumbria or Lancashire. The nearest Cumbria retained station is in Milnthorpe which is certainly a lot further away than Silverdale. Graeme Higgins, brigade secretary of the FBU in Cumbria, said:

Tim Farron in his Grange Now column this month states:

Age Uk’s newest store opened it’s doors to the public at 10am on Thursday 5th November. Residents queued in the rain waiting for one of Grange’s eldest residents to cut the ribbon. Norman Critchley turned 100 in the summer so he was a fitting choice for the opening.

Age Uk’s Chief Officer, Penny Pullinger was also in attendance and she told Grange Now: “this is our 9th store and we are delighted to be here. We have a great mix of preloved and new items and the Manager, John has a lot of new ideas for this store. One of the ideas for this one is a ‘Listen before you buy’ record collection. There is a stereo (remember those) and records from a bygone time. A coffee shop/lounge area is great for a cuppa and a catch up and there are rows of books which, again, you are invited to ‘read before you buy’.

The store is looking for volunteers and donations, so if you can help, please do so. Store opening hours are Monday to Saturday 9.30 - 4.30pm and Sunday 11 - 4pm.

"I have written to the Chief Fire Officer to complain about his plans to close the Fire Station in Arnside which again seem to be based upon “wrong figures”. No proper allowance seems to have been made for the numbers of visitors to the area nor the important role that the Fire Service play in supporting the Coast Guard." Crucially, local knowledge is so important. If someone calls to report an incident as being located as ‘Well it’s just up the lane….. etc.’, it needs someone from the immediate vicinity to decipher the message and work it out.

Grange Now contacted Lancashire Fire and Rescue service who are responsible for Silverdale retained station. They commented that ‘Cross Border Attendance’ was common and that Cumbria and Lancashire share an ‘Automatic Vehicle Location System’ to find

“Retained fire stations and firefighters are vital to rural communities such as Cumbria. The council state that these stations have been earmarked for closure because there is a low level of demand. However if these proposals go ahead we’ll be looking at a 10 – 15 minute delay between a member of the public reporting an emergency to when a fire engine will arrive on the scene. That delay could be the difference between life and death.”

With large caravan sites in the area, there is concern that the extra delay would be too long to respond to an emergency and take effective action. Jim Onions, Chief Fire Officer, spokesperson for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service quoted directly to Grange Now: “We are making this proposal because Arnside is a low risk area with an extremely low number of

incidents each year. On average the fire engine responds to fewer than two incidents a month in the station area and almost half of these are false alarms. In the past six years there have only been five dwelling fires in the area. Arnside is already supported by three stations – Milnthorpe, Silverdale and Carnforth - only a short distance away." If you wish to have your say on this issue please visit the link below this article. A three month public consultation will now follow and a meeting was held locally on 11th November to listen to public concerns, with over 300 people attending. Find out more - search on facebook for ‘Fight for Arnside's Fire Station’ where one comment makes the point that fire station cuts are being implemented at the same time as sites for yet more housing (being identified through the Arnside and Silverdale AONB development plan - There is a public event regarding this on Monday 30 November at the Arnside Educational Institute.)

Pumpkins on the prom

Local vet, Jeremy Voakes and his wife, Mandy, are once again in the throes of their mammoth task of creating their christmas light display. Every year, for the past 10 years, they have decorated their entire house, outbuildings and surrounding land with Christmas lights and displays which can be seen from miles around.

Jeremy told Grange Now: “We are battling with the weather at present but we are hoping to switch them on on the 1st December, then every night after

Keg and Kitchen Managers, Tracy and Matt Hathorn, are the organisers behind Grange’s first ever pumpkin walk. that, from 4.30pm until 10pm. As with previous years, all donations are going to the NSPCC to help less fortunate children this Christmas. We are told that all the money stays in our area. We would be delighted to beat last year’s fantastic total so please visit, enjoy,

and donate and Merry Christmas from us”.

If you haven’t been before, the house, ‘Trevenna’ can be found when you turn left as you enter Cark from Cartmel. Postcode for Satnavs: LA11 7NL

Well deserved award for volunteers

Tracy told Grange Now: “ We were hoping that 30 or 40 people would turn up but we were absolutely delighted when we had 163 on the night. It was an amazing turnout.”

Miraculously, the weather stayed fine on the prom with a dark, clear night which showed off the inventively carved pumpkins to great effect. Tracy continued: “We couldn’t have done it without the help of John Gilmore, Angela Proctor, Ann Walmsley and Leanna Walmsley for ferrying the pumpkins to and fro, and special thanks have to go to the following children: Emma, Alice, Morgan, Martha, Jayden, Luke, KT, Erin and George who not only put the pumpkins out on the prom but for picking them afterwards - slugs and all!”

Thanks also go to the Chamber of Trade for paying the insurance, Grange AFC, FSC Castlehead and 2 private donations which paid for the battery operated tea lights and finally to Sally and Tricia for displaying and judging the pumpkins in Victoria Hall on the Saturday. Well done to everyone who got involved. There were some amazing pumpkin designs, most of which can be seen on the Keg & Kitchen facebook page.

New Owners For The Netherwood Hotel The 'Bloom group' receiving their award

We are delighted to report that all the hard work of Grange in Bloom volunteers has paid off in the form of an award from the Community Rail Awards. The volunteers plus TransPennine Express and the Furness Line CRP have been awarded first prize for the outstanding transformational work on the gardens at Grange station. The group will use the cheque plus additional funding from TPE and the Furness Line CRP for additional planting in 2016. The prizes were presented to the volunteers at Grange

station on Monday the 2nd November. Present was Tim Owen, Chairman of the Furness and Lakes Lines CRPs and Mick Elliot, representing TransPennine Express. Other volunteers groups are now being formed at Silverdale and Kents Bank. Along with the volunteers at Dalton-in-Furness and Grange, there is a growing pride in stations along the lines in Cumbria and this benefits the local passengers as well as the growing number of tourists who are coming to Cumbria by train.

In September the Netherwood Hotel in Grange-over-Sands said a very sad farewell to long time owners Mike and Christine Fallowfield, who have begun a well-earned retirement.

The Fallowfield family bought Netherwood in March 1966, so their proprietorship lasted nearly 50 years - a remarkable achievement in itself, and one which has earned them a great deal of respect and affection, both in the community and further afield. The new owners of Netherwood are North of England Estates Ltd, a family run company who own and successfully run two other hotels – one in Darlington and one in the Wye Valley. The new General Manager, Curt Green, would like to express his huge appreciation for the support and assistance he has received from Mike and Christine, and the existing staff, as he begins to take the reins. Curt is passionate about hospitality, enjoying roles as Hotel Manager

Dementia Information Day

Email Contact: contactus@grangeoversands.net Web Address:

At the end of October, Grange Soroptimists held a Dementia Information Open Day with organisations sharing information with members of the public and with each other. There was a very diverse group of organisations present, all there to help dementia sufferers and their families and carers including The Alzheimer’s Society, Age UK South Lakeland, South Lakeland CAB, Dignity in Dementia, The Wordsworth Trust, local solicitors Gedye’s, the local mental health team and South Lakeland Carers. Books and resource packs including reminiscence books were available and provided by the library. The day was rounded off with a short demonstration of Singing

for the Brain - weekly singing sessions in Allithwaite run by Soroptimists International and the Alzheimer’s Society. Anyone with dementia can attend with a carer but must contact the Alzheimer’s Society on 01539 742631 to book. For further information see the Grange Soroptimists website. The web address is included in our information on the society Round up page.

Dementia affects 1 in 6 people over 80 and some much younger people so as a community we need to be tuned into problems people face. The Grange Soroptimists are Dementia Friends and received training from the Alzheimer’s Society.

The Bay Cycle Way, the new cycle route running from Glasson Dock in Lancaster through Grange and the Cartmel Peninsula to Walney Island, has been honoured with the title of 'Best Visitor Experience 2015' after picking up an award at the Lancashire Tourism Awards 2015, held on Thursday 5th November at Blackpool's Winter Gardens. The inclusive, family-friendly, wide-ranging experience that Morecambe Bay's new cycle way has to offer, impressed the judges and was recognised in the presentation of the 'Visitor Experience Award 2015' to Susannah Bleakley and Janet Barton of Morecambe Bay Partnership. Rosslyn Colderley, Regional Director North West for Sustrans said “This is fantastic news and very well deserved for the newest Sustrans National Cycle Network route that will do so much for tourism all along its 81 miles. Special mention must go to all those who put their hearts and souls into making the route and four day opening event such a huge success. Our amazing Sustrans volunteers spent 608 hours preparing, signing, testing and helping to lead the inaugural event involving hundreds of participants in June.”

County Matters

I am happy to report that we may be in position to reinstate the Saturday bus which services the Cartmel Peninsula. This hopefully will start to operate by Easter of next year with the support from four local Parishes of Grange, Holker, Lower and Upper Allithwaite. Last month we saw a lot of severe weather which resulted in excess water again on Windermere Road and in the Ornamental Gardens. On the weekend of the 15th November I met two Environmental Agency workers making sure the outlets from the gardens to the promenade outfall fully operational. They were also making sure the culvert in the car park which feeds into the gardens was running free. They deserve our thanks for their help in making sure the culverts and outlets were fully functional. One of them had been brought up from Suffolk for the weekend to help.

At this time of year when we are getting ready for Christmas I think we should be remembering all those who are not as fortunate as ourselves. With this in mind I would ask that if you have an elderly neighbour or someone you know may be lonely this Christmas just give them a friendly visit to see how they are. It may only take a few minutes but could make a massive difference to them. If you are out and about this time of the year and see a highways defect or street light out please report it into the highways hotline as our highways teams have limited time to do highways inspections So please ring the HOTLINE on 0845 609 6609 or email betterhighways. southlakeland@cumbria.gov.uk

Wishing you all a happy and enjoyable Christmas kindest regards, Bill Wearing Conservative County Councillor Grange

GRANGE-OVER-SANDS NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group has been working very hard over the past few months and would like to share with you some of what they have achieved so far. For your opportunity to catch up and ask questions, come along to the display at the Victoria Hall Thursday December 10th 2pm -7:30pm Friday December 11th 10am – 4pm or Saturday December 12th 10am – 12noon We look forward to meeting you, and getting your feedback on this very important project which will affect the future of our town.

Tim’s column The campaign to protect the funding for the police in Cumbria has had to move up a gear.

Since I last wrote in Grange Now the Government has announced that it is putting it’s new funding plans on hold for a year because they have found that the original calculation of how much money they were planning to give our police had been done using the “wrong figures”. This has really only bought us time. As far as I understand it, they are still planning to introduce a new funding formula that makes absolutely no allowance for the extra costs our police face in covering as large an area as Cumbria. Nor does it take into account the fact that more than 16 million people from the rest of the country come to visit our area boosting the half a million of us who live here quite considerably. Why having the “wrong figures” should delay the Government by a year I have no idea but we need to use this time productively. As I said last month on top of the funding cuts created by these proposed new plans the Chancellor is also likely to introduce further cuts as a result of his drive to reduce Government spending. In total our police could lose up to £26 million over the next five years. We currently have just over 1000 police officers in the county, if you work on it costing about £1 million to employ 25 police offices you can easily see the potential damage that

Anthony Smith

these cuts could do to policing in our area. If you feel as strongly as I do about this please do sign my petition calling on the Government to think again, you can find it at on my website (www.timfarron.co.uk).

I have written to the Chief Fire Officer to complain about his plans to close the Fire Station in Arnside which again seem to be based upon “wrong figures”. Again no proper allowance seems to have been made for the numbers of visitors to the area nor the important role that the Fire Service play in supporting the Coast Guard. I have pressed for the plans to be put on hold until an more thoroughly worked through analysis of the issues can be done.

I had another enjoyable visit to a school in Cartmel this month. This time to Cartmel Priory School ahead of the election of their Youth Parliament member to discuss the job of being an MP. Based on the questions I faced there seem to be several young people there who want to play an active role in their communities. You never know perhaps one or two will even decide to become an MP. My next advice surgery is taking place in Victoria Hall from 10.00 am to 11.00 am on Friday the 11th of December. Please do come along if you have something I can help you with, you don’t need to make an appointment. If you can’t make it then just email tim@timfarron.co.uk or call 01539 723403. In conversation with... Fiona Daley on behalf of Friends at Christmas

On Christmas Day, when we’re all arguing, sorry, enjoying time with our loved ones and tucking into the turkey, a group of friends come together to make sure that people who are alone, for whatever reason, have someone to share this special day with. ‘Friends at Christmas’ offer just - a friend at Christmas. Grange Now spoke to ‘friends’ member Fiona Daley to find out more.

"we are also dependent on new volunteers"

Q

How do you fund the day?

We are lucky enough to receive just about everything we need through donations. The only significant thing we need to pay cash for is the insurance and this is over £150 for the day! Very many business in Grange make donations in kind – the turkey, potatoes, Christmas cake, mince pies, sausages, carrots, sprouts, Christmas pudding, balloons, our meeting venue and even the tablecloths are all provided by the independent local businesses of Grange free of charge. Some business provide gifts for the lucky dip and we also have a collection plate on Christmas Day. Somehow we always get what we need.

Q

Deborah Bushell and Valerie Lavender keep on top of the administrative commitment during the year including agenda and minutes, invites, posters and donation lists. Barbara Squires is the other main member of the organising committee and for the last 5 years been in charge of all the food, she is our resident chef. Other key volunteers who turn out regularly for meetings, deliver invites and collect donations and do lots of hard work on the day are David, Skip, Margery, Marion, Tony, Chris, Deborah and Stephen, Bernadine and Rose. We must also mention those people you turn out in the morning and afternoon to do the driving.

When did you start organising for this year's dinner?

How many people are involved?

Q

Do you need anymore volunteers?

It may seem like a huge commitment to plan to run an event on Christmas Day but there is a great family atmosphere and it is such good fun that most volunteers keep coming back year after year. However, we are also dependent on new volunteers, we are very happy that some people, particularly families with teenage children, might join us for just one year. The contribution of new volunteers keeps things fresh. For Christmas 2015 we have ‘guest chefs’ who many in Grange will know – it is Robert and his wife Sharon who own Fish over Chips.

Q

How did it all start and who first set it up? The Friends at Christmas lunch is held on Christmas Day in Grange and was the idea of Grange couple, Reg and Barbara Brown, in 2006. It has been held each year since then, with the exception of 2009 when the snow and ice on Christmas Day made it impossible. The charity reached a pivotal point in March 2011 when the founders and the original team of volunteers decided to retire. Following a public meeting, a new team of volunteers came forward and have been running the event for the last 5 Christmases. Our Christmas Day includes a 3 course meal, live music from Andy Webb, entertainment, a visit from Santa, a lucky dip trolley and transport to and from the event for those who need it. It is open to anyone in the Grange area who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day. There are many reasons why someone would be on their own. We find many Grange residents prefer to stay in their own homes and wake up in their own beds rather than travel long distances to stay with family in unfamiliar surroundings, others are on their own because of bereavement or just because they choose an independent life. Whatever the reason we offer warm and convivial atmosphere and because everyone is in the same boat it is easy to make friends on the day.

Q

We are still on the lookout for this year’s Santa (suit available to anyone with the right physique!). There’s still time….

Within three days of the announcement being made in the November Grange Now we had 28 people register for 2015 lunch. Our maximum number is 50 and we always have at least 40. There’s still time if you would like to join them for lunch or if you would like to volunteer please telephone Fiona Daley on 33232 or Liz Benson on 32507, or join us at our next meeting on 10 December.

We couldn’t make all this happen without a dedicated team of volunteers who start work in September. Liz Benson is our Treasurer and makes sure we comply with the Charity Commissioners requirements to prepare accounts and is also in charge of entertainment, transport and insurance. Liz plays a huge part on Christmas Day keeping everyone entertained. Secretaries

BOOK REVIEW

This book is for anyone who has either, ever owned a puppy or has a sense of humour. It’s wonderful.

As the owner of a six month old pup (not a Border Terrier) the opening pages had me in stitches. Real life events in the first few weeks of a pup were brought instantly to mind, but

Twiddle Muff Shortage Community Cafe responds On the last Tuesday of the month (except December!) the T Pot Stop, at Allithwaite Community Centre, opens its door to all. Between 10.30 and 12.30 people meet for a natter, a cup of whatever, homemade cake and lots more. A group of ladies heard about the need for ‘twiddle muffs’ for people suffering with stress, agitation and dementia. Out came the knitting needles, trips out to find bits and pieces, old beads, buttons, squeezy exercise balls etc etc to make each muff an object of interest. Great fun was had by all whilst enjoying each other’s company. They have now produced twenty muffs which they would like to donate locally, especially to the nursing homes if they

ART & MUSIC For the past 26 years, Mick and Jean, and the youth of Grange Amateur Operatic Society have been entertaining the community with their wonderful pantomimes (oh yes they have) set in so many different, or make-believe countries, such as Neverland in Peter Pan, to China and Egypt as in this year’s Aladdin. Some of the popular ones, such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Jack and the Beanstalk, have been repeated more than once over the years, and as for Aladdin, this is the third time it has been presented, its last showing was in 2006. Over the years, so many children and young people have performed with this fun-filled, talented group. With an average cast of, an impressive, 45 members with an age range from 7 to17 years, putting these shows together is no mean feat. In fact, some of the early players are now married with children of their own, who are now performing!. Does it make Producer/Directors Jean and Mick Malkin feel a little old? “Well, yes, sometimes. But the smiles, hugs, enthusiasm, friendships and talent of the children make all the hard work well worthwhile. The team working behind the scenes at rehearsals and on performance nights is incredible, with over 50 "helpers" listed in the programme. It is obvious that the friends of the youth in this area give their time willingly. Nurturing some talented youngsters has also been a priority, with some going on to professional theatre or

Cartmel Choral Society

Cartmel Choral Society are holding their Christmas Concert in Cartmel Priory on Saturday 19 December at 7:30pm.

Many music fans travel to the event from far afield, while those of us who live in Windermere and Grange are fortunate to have such an event right on our doorsteps! The Rotary Club of Windermere, who organise the festival, are convinced that 2016 will be the best yet.

The programme will once again offer a wide range of top-class music, from acoustic to Chicago-style blues, from roots, soul and funk to electric blues-rock. The Friday highlight will be Trafficker, fronted by superb guitarist, singer and songwriter Tommy Allen. The Saturday headliner will be Sean Webster & the Deadlines, one of the best bands on the British and European blues scene, featuring outstanding vocals from Sean Webster. And the festival will finish with virtuoso multiinstrumentalists Willie & the Bandits, listed in BBC Radio 1's top ten must-see bands at Glastonbury 2014. There are two new features for the 2016 festival: a 2-hour Twilight Blues Cruise on Windermere, featuring a unique acoustic collaboration between top blues musicians Jon Amor and Sean Webster; and a Free Fringe Festival in Windermere, with live music in four venues, Grey Walls, The Lamplighter, Queens Hotel and The Elleray. The music of Marc Bolan & Mickey Finn The band today owes its origins to three of Marc Bolan's valued musicians. Mickey Finn, Paul Fenton and Jack Green. The story started in 1997 when they were invited to appear at a special memorial concert at the Cambridge Corn Exchange. This event was held in the same week as a presentation by The Performing Rights Society (PRS) at the site, in Barnes London, of Marc Bolan's untimely death. Now a memorial garden. It was suggested to the guys that it would be a good idea to reform the T-Rex band. Paul invited Barry Newby an old friend and ex 'Smokie' tour manager to help recruit the musicians, manage and give financial support. The band played their first show with front man Rob Benson for the Porsche company in March 1999 at the Matrin Schleyer Halle, Stuttgart. Dates in Japan followed and since then the band have promoted not just Marc Bolan's great songs and sales of the back catalogue but thrilled thousand upon

thousand of music fans throughout the UK, Europe and the Far East. The band continued to perform extensively until Mickey Finn's death in 2003. However it had always been Mickey's wish that the band should continue and deeply touched by the publics overwhelming support, Paul and the band continue to do so. The band today, with its expanded line-up, reflects the mid 70's period and features the female voice that helped make Marc Bolan and T-Rex the iconic name that music fans remember. The band also features guitarist Graham Oliver who formed the British Heavy Metal band SAXON in 1975. Graham was introduced to the band on a ferry between Stockholm and Helsinki in 2002 and replaced Smokie's Alan Silson who left the band in 2004 to persue a solo career. The remainder of the band appearing in Grange on 27th December are: Jay Spargo lead vocal. Dave Major Keyboards/vocal Jeff Brown (formerly Sweet, Tremeloes) Bass. Linda Dawson vocals.

Westmorland Orchestra tackle Teutonic titans The Westmorland Orchestra will perform three musical works of the Romantic period at Kendal Leisure Centre on Saturday 5th December at 7.30pm. The program opens by marking the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s seminal opera, Tristan und Isolde with a performance of the Prelude and Liebestod. These were favourite excerpts of Wagner’s which he took great pleasure in presenting in the years between the the completion of the Opera and its first full performance in 1865. Switching to a lighter theme, the audience will be transported to the

dusty Pines of Rome. Respighi’s evocative 1924 piece portrays contrasting scenes of children playing, shadows at the catacombs, the song of a moonlit nightingale and finally a misty dawn preceding the return of victorious legions of Roman soldiers, To quote the evening’s conductor Richard Howarth “This music is descriptive, emotive, utterly engaging and ultimately triumphant (loud)”. The concert ends with more German romanticism; Brahms’s 1st Symphony was a labour of love that took him more than two decades to compose and is sometimes referred to as “Beethoven's 10th” as it takes great inspiration from that orchestral master.

Dear Clementina The ideal gift for anyone with a sense of humour, or a dog, or both.

Flookburgh and District Amateur Operatic Society are closing, although they hope it is only temporary. Deborah Powell, a member, has been in touch to recount her memories of the Society. Little did I know what an impact FAOS would have on my life when I was pressed to join the society more than 30 years ago by Pat Mikosz. Alas, after over 60 years, the opera is no longer able to recruit enough new members to allow presentation of musicals. FAOS has always been a quirky society, willing to give anything a try and possessed of a distinctive style. Throughout the years many fine actors and talented support personnel have made the productions a joy to attend with lively sets, music and acting and friendly front of house staff. My own experience started with the production of ‘Salad Days’ in 1979 with Carol Benson and Robert Moore playing the leads, admirably supported by Pat Micosz, Tom Walker and Arthur Wilson amongst others. Productions ranged from ‘The Boyfriend’, ‘Charlie Girl’, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Annie get your gun’ to ‘The Merry widow’ and ‘Stepping Out’, under such musical directors as Jack Manning and

Christopher Quarmby and directors such as Joyce Warrington and Sue Little. Our adored prompt, Mrs. Hutchinson, was a legend, taking herself off in the middle of scenes to have a fag or a coffee, and hissing to actors on stage ‘What page are you on?’ There are many more memories – from Arthur Wilson’s famous absences to the pub during performances, the unmistakable tenor voice of Brian Greaves, the clearly audible sotto voce comments of Evan Thomas from the stage, and sound systems that picked up radio broadcasts from Korea in the middle of a production. All of these were met with the panache and good humor which exemplified FAOS, both by the actors and by the supportive community which came yearly to watch ‘their’ opera. I hope that in the future this same spirit will engender a future Society.

CHESTNUTS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE The chestnut season runs from late September to December. It is such a versatile nut, delivering a powerfully evocative flavour when roasted and devoured straight from the shell as well as combining happily with other seasonal ingredients. The Farm Shop Cookbook explains how best to prepare them:

Roast A long-handled chestnut pan comes in handy for tossing them. Slit or prick the shells first or they will explode like little hand grenades. Failing access to an open fire, roast at 230˚C/gas 8 for 20-25 minutes. Once roasted the texture is mealy and crunchy at the same time – lovely dipped in sea salt or honey and black pepper.

Peel Cut a vertical slit through the shell and put the nuts in a pan of cold water. Bring to the boil and boil for 4-5 minutes, then remove from the heat, leaving the nuts in the pan. Fish out one or two at a time - peeling the shells and brown membrane is easier when the nuts are warm.

Purée Home-made sweetened purée is lovely for folding into fools, adding to ice cream or delicious cakes. Roughly chop 500g large fresh peeled chestnuts and put in a pan with enough water to just cover. Add a split vanilla pod, or sprig of rosemary/ bring to the boil and simmer until tender-about 30 minutes. Strain, keeping the cooking liquid but removing any added flavourings. Purée in a food processor moistening with 3-4 tablespoons of the liquid. Tip the purée back into the pan and add 225g caster sugar and another 3-4 tablespoons of liquid. Bring to the boil then cook gently, stirring often, until thickened. Pour into warm sterilised jars and seal. Head to www.lowsizerghbarn.co.uk for our own sausage, cranberry and chestnut stuffing recipe.

‘Christmas is coming, and the Geese are getting fat…’ At least we hope they are! Last year the beauties we received from Todderstaffe Farm on the Fylde Coast were absolutely stunning – beautifully plucked and dressed in presentation boxes, and by all accounts, our customers loved them too! For centuries, Goose was the festive fowl and although many now choose Turkey, there is something quite special about a perfectly cooked Roast Goose. However, we do our best to give customers lots of choice for That Most Important Meal. This year we have a few new festive treats lined up! There’s

our Festive Chicken Roast: a whole, boneless Chicken stuffed with Pheasant breasts, Gammon and chef-made forcemeat. And we’re bringing back a Christmas Classic, Beef Wellington: Prime British Beef Fillet covered in a Mushroom and Chicken Liver Pate, wrapped in home-made lattice Puff Pastry.

We know what it means to be busy in the run up to Christmas, so for those who don’t want to spend hours doing a ‘Christmas Dinner Shop’, we’ve designed a new range of Christmas Boxes. They include all your Festive Meats and Trimmings for a luxurious Christmas Dinner – and from only £45 to feed 5-7 people, they’re also great value!! Don’t forget, we also stock all

it's almost Christmas

We are now taking orders for all the traditional favourites, our ‘one is never enough’ mince pies, our fruity boozy Christmas Cakes, our traditional marzipan Stollen and yule logs, our Rich buttery Florentines, and not forgetting our ‘very rummy’ rum truffles, trifles and cream cakes……. And of course the best roast ham in Grange Lots of great breads too, our delicious multiseed range perfect for boxing day sandwiches, our popular ‘splits’ for soups and buffets, our classic oven bottoms for that hot pork and stuffing moment…..there’s ciabatta and focaccia, tasty sourdoughs, fancy fruit loaves croissants and bagels. Have you members of the family visiting who are gluten free? then don’t forget we sell gluten free bread and a delicious range of gluten free cakes and puddings. CHURCH NEWS

St Mary’s

Following last year’s presentation to mark the centenary of the start of the war a great deal of research into the background stories of these men has been carried out in conjunction with the Cartmel Peninsula Local History Society and the resulting book compiled by Mervyn Hull, Pat Rowland and Barbara Copeland includes many photographs and gives a fascinating insight into the lives of each individual and the devastating impact of the war on them and on their families. During the evening

The celebration of our 150th anniversary has continued with two further events in November.

On the 7th (Remembrance Weekend) we hosted a wine and cheese evening to mark the launch of a new book “The Allithwaite Boys” commemorating the lives of those eleven men who served and fell in the first World War and whose names are recorded on the war memorial outside the church.

Grange Methodist

Women’s Network at the church, met on Tuesday 27th October and welcomed Mary Stone who spoke about the Kenyan Charity, ‘Double Joy’. This was started because of the many children orphaned through AIDS. Some terraced houses were bought and equipped, very basically, to house about 90. The children are loved and cared for and a recent addition is a small farm, to teach them farming skills.

Journey to Christmas

Girls are shown how to use a sewing machine and make bags which are then sold for funds which help to support the work. Pianist was Ann Clark and Lilian Greenhalgh chaired the meeting.

Jill Ludlow delighted her audience on Tuesday 10th November, at the Women’s Network Meeting at Grange Methodist Church when she showed slides of some of her favourite places in Austria. The scenery was enchanting and the skies were so blue, quite different

The other event was a Celebration Ceilidh for all the family on November 21st at Grange Fell Golf Club and next month we are looking forward to a final celebration with the Levens Choir who will be performing a special Christmas concert on December 15th (see Arts Page).

to what we were experiencing that day. Some memories were recalled by Jill and her audience, some of whom had visited there. The pianist was Elizabeth Armstrong and Kath Pickstone chaired the meeting. On Friday 13th November, Network ladies were busy preparing and serving a soup and sweet lunch. The proceeds of this are to be divided amongst charities which the Network members support.

Church will be open on Sat 5 December from 10am. Later in December, ‘Journey to Christmas’ follows the story of the shepherds and angels, Mary and Joseph, as their lives are changed for ever. We’re invited to take some time away from the shopping and the tinsel

St Paul’s & Fell Church, Grange Another busy Christmas season at St Paul’s begins with the welcoming reception for the Christmas Tree Festival and our craft fair which take place during the Extravaganza (full details on page 3).

The Kendal-based Flutes & Co orchestra will be entertaining us with a festive concert at St Paul’s on Sunday 6th December at 3.00pm. Their programme includes popular classics as well as some fun Christmas pieces. Tickets are £6 and £3 payable at the door. Please join us for our candlelit Carol Service at 4pm on Sunday 20 December. This is always such a popular and special event set against the backdrop of all the illuminated Christmas Trees. Afterwards there will be time to enjoy fellowship with our friends over a glass of mulled wine and homemade mince pies.

The Fell Church will be open on the afternoon of Christmas week from 2pm to 4pm Monday 21 to Thursday 24 December. You are warmly invited to call in to view the Christmas decorations in this lovely little church and join us for tea and biscuits.

The members of St Paul’s and the Fell Church would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very joyous Christmas and peaceful New Year and we look forward to welcoming you at our churches over the coming Christmas season.

Here we are in December, the season of Advent as we look forward to Christmas. In case any of us forget why we celebrate Christmas, all the Churches in Grange will be having special services. This year, the URC and the Methodist Church are joining up for our celebrations. See the Church services on page 17 for a full list of services

St. Charles & St. Cuthbert’s November is the month of the Holy Souls when we remember our deceased relatives and friends. On Remembrance Sunday, the congregation listened in total silence to a most moving and poignant sermon by, Fr. Aleks Makulski, about his childhood experiences in occupied Poland, bringing a totally different and unexpected slant to the ultimate sacrifice of those who gave their lives in order that we might live in peace. There is no doubt that he has first-hand experience of the sacrifices and horrors of war that many of us only learn about from history books. We are sad to report the death of an elderly parishioner living at Cartmel Grange whose funeral will be later

in the month. The Social Committee organised a quiz with potato pie supper which was well supported. Many thanks to Ralph Gerrard for his questions and presentation. We now look forward to our Advent service on 5th December and our annual Charity Concert on 18th December when we will have the “Lourdes Singers” performing a concert of Christmas Carols and songs interspersed with seasonal readings some of which will amuse and others which, hopefully, will be thought provoking. Whatever you do and wherever you go during Advent and the lead-up to Christmas, may the Good Lord go with you.

NATURE & WILDLIFE

Look what we did!

Ginny Burns has been in touch to let us know what Grange Outdoor Nature Club are up to.

Make a simple hedgehog house

Hedehogs will be really glad to find shelters like this before cold winter comes. You will be giving them a cozy safe haven where they can happily hibernate until spring.

The BBC Children in Need Countryfile calendar featuring this happy hedgehog is available to order directly from the Hallmark website: www.hcscalendar.co.uk

Some may call this an Insect Hotel but we prefer the title Creepy Crawley Castle. It's a B and B for bees, a hidey hole for hedgehogs, a boarding house for beetles, a slumber spot for slow worms.

providing many of the materials and for his expert guidance. Thanks also to Ian Lockyer for donating the tin roof and to The Cumbria Grand Hotel for letting us use their land. Grange Outdoor Nature Club is our local branch of Wildlife Watch which is the junior section of the national Wildlife Trust organisation. GONC will continue to hold meetings, usually on the first Sunday of each month, in 2016. Our activities are aimed at 7-11 year old's but all are welcome. Kids aged 7 or younger must be accompanied by an adult. We ask for a donation of £1.50 per family. To join in or to find out more, please contact me at ginny.burnsfarm@ gmail.com

We built it with pallets, carpet rolls and corrugated cardboard, all recycled. Then we filled it with lots of leftovers from the annual autumnal garden clearance. In particular we used buddleia, bamboo and raspberry cane twigs because their hollow stems make great places for bees to lay their eggs. One of the participants said: “"I still can't believe we made something so brilliant in just 2 hours!"

Winter in the woods. The woods seem to close down for the winter, with things going dormant that is, life is still out there but a lot of it is hidden away. Fungi for example, always signify winter to me. Of course you can see fungi most of the year if you look. But for a short time through the winter we are privileged to see the fruiting bodies of these incredible organisms. Their roots (mycorrhiza) are hidden underground connecting them to each other and to the trees above, swapping nutrients between each other, the tree being the host and sometimes succumbing to the fungus over time. Fungi vary from the microscopic to giant Puffballs and parasols with a neverending range of shapes and colours. Some are for the pot and others not to be touched, but always fascinating to see them. Some wildlife will retire to their winter bedrooms until spring; however we do have things to see such as our great spotted and green woodpeckers and the tiny gold crest - often letting you get close to it as it feeds on the lower branches of the yew tree. They let you do this because they are too busy

trying to stay alive by feeding almost continuously. The trees themselves shed their leaves, becoming naked and showing their form, branches, bark, twigs and seed, but you can see the birds in them more easily now. To me this signifies the start of the coppice season and we use this time to minimise our impact on the woods, but by spring, we will have breathed new life into the coppice. Many coppice woods are called “spring”, even areas that don’t have woods anymore. To do and look for: wonderful fungi and brambling (a finch resembling the chaffinch from Scandinavia and Siberia), often visiting sometimes in very large numbers and favouring beech seeds. We may even get some waxwing again. Take some binoculars to the prom at high tide and see what you can spot or wander round Grange’s ancient woodlands and explore your wildlife this winter. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Tony, Reserve Manager

SCHOOL REPORTS

Allithwaite Primary

Allithwaite school celebrated Children in Need Day by coming to school in their own clothes and with ‘Mad Hair’. All the children and staff made a fantastic effort and there were many original styles and colours with everyone giving £1 for taking part. We also held a cake sale - with many, many cakes being donated by the children and parents - to raise a little extra money for such a worthy cause. This half term the Snowy Owls are enjoying their forest and Gruffalo cave having read the book first, while the Tawny Owls are learning about dinosaurs and have even hatched a dinosaur egg!! All KS2 went for a walk around Rydal water to inspire them to write a book in the style of Alfred Wainwright. We look forward to reading these in future weeks. Soon the whole school will be looking forward to Christmas starting with the PTA fayre on

Friday 27th November and finishing with parties, a carol service and a Christmas film. Not forgetting the much awaited performance of the nativity play ‘A Midwife Crisis’. This is the story of a midwife, who though eager to help at the delivery of a new baby, struggles to find out where he is to be born. Ably assisted by her donkey Steve, she asks for help from some Innkeepers, Kings, Shepherds and Angels, but does she get there in time?

Cartmel Primary

Our Harvest celebrations took place in the Priory Church just prior to breaking up for half term. The children shared the meaning of this important time of year with parents in a musical presentation, reminding us all of the necessity to think about those less fortunate than ourselves around the world. Keeping this theme in mind, our main project

for the month has been ‘Champions of Change’ to raise money for BBC Children in Need. House teams have held cake sales during October and November. Our School Council worked with pupils at Cartmel Priory School, to hold a fair on Friday 13th November in the hall. School Councillors gathered plans from their classes and liaised with secondary pupils to decide upon stalls, games and decorations for the big day. Each class made gifts to sell for profit and created games for the visiting public to participate in. Children and staff came to

school in pyjamas, causing great hilarity! Willing staff members agreed to having wet sponges thrown at them…for a small fee of course, all generating further profit for the worthy causes supported by this national event.

We are looking forward to sharing more time with Cartmel secondary pupils during a visit to their school production of the Sound of Music this month. It is always a joy for staff to see past pupils in action and a highlight of the year for junior pupils to see what life in the ‘big school’ might be like!

New Head at Allithwaite Primary Allithwaite Church of England Primary School have appointed a new Headteacher, Mrs Gillian Elliott.

Mrs Elliott began teaching in 2004 and has taught in a variety of settings across all age ranges, before settling in Upper key Stage two for the past seven years. She has been a teacher and senior leader at Allithwaite for three years before securing the headship last month.

Mrs Elliott is a child centred educator, who is passionate about teaching and ensuring that every child reaches their full potential. It is her aim to ensure that Allithwaite is a forward thinking and ambitious school with a safe Christian environment. Mrs Elliott believes that school is the opportunity for children to discover and unlock talents in a fun and nurturing environment. The Governing body

are delighted to have appointed Mrs Elliott and look forward to working with her for the benefit of all pupils, families and the community.

of Cologne. A number of students made it up the 533 steps of the Cathedral’s Bell Tower and were rewarded with amazing views of the city. Shopping then beckoned, followed by a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Museum – delicious! The following day involved a trip to the smaller, very picturesque, town of Cochem on the Mosel.

On 22 October, 44 pupils and 4 staff from Cartmel Priory School headed off on a language trip to Germany. The journey was long, but time passed quickly with students munching their way through lots of goodies and watching movies. We stayed in a lovely little hotel in Boppard and had a wander down to the Rhein to see all the cruise ships moored for the night. One day was spent exploring the beautiful city

Here students explored the re-built medieval castle, shopped a bit more and then used up any remaining energy at the massive wave pool, the best one of its type that many students had been to. A great time was had by all!

Lindale School report We have had a fantastic term at Lindale Primary School, made all the better by the wonderful Autumn weather when we were able to maximise our opportunities for Outdoor learning. We opened our extended outdoor areas to our Reception and Year 2 and 3 classes, so that learning inside and outside the classroom can be easily integrated. We have enjoyed taking part in the cluster netball, sports hall athletics and cross country events, and going through to compete at South Lakes competitions. Years 4, 5 and 6 visited Windermere School for a fascinating Geography morning; learning about volcanos. Years 2 and 3 have visited the fire station as part of their ‘Fire’ topic, and Reception and Year 1 had a ride on the steam train at Lakeland and Haverthwaite railway. We have also been thinking about our school’s core Christian values of trust, peace, kindness, honesty and perseverance. We held a ‘Values day’ where the children took part in a whole range of activities

to understand why these values are important in our school and in life. We are now preparing for our Christmas performance of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in Lindale Village Hall on Thursday 10th December and our nativity play in St Paul’s Church Lindale on Tuesday 15th December. Please contact school if you would like to come to either event.

This half term we have been playing in a rocket and making rockets to blast off into space. Glitter, glue and all things sparkly are out in the run up to Christmas. We will be saying “Goodbye” to our play assistant, Julie Stark after 16 years and wish her well in her new job. Julie Stark will be leaving Grange Preschool after 16 years of loyal and cheerful service. We will miss her very much. To mark the occasion we will be holding ‘An Audience with Julie’ on Friday 18th December from 7 to 9pm at The Pavilion. All former pupils, parents, helpers etc. are invited to drop in for a chat and a cuppa on that evening.

Dear Editor

I believe you have an article in this month’s edition about the youth services in Grange and indeed in South Lakes. I just wanted to let you know what is happening in South Lakes thanks to support from the Local Committee so that your readers have the full picture. Inspira had previously led a consortia of youth work providers focussing on an early help agenda, Young Cumbria were part of that consortia, but the Early Help contract went back in house at the County Council on the 1st of October and staff from the various agencies were transferred over to Cumbria County Council. But thanks to support from Cumbria County Council via South Lakes Local Committee there is help for the 14 or so small groups who were previously supported by Young Cumbria in the South Lakes area. Cumbria Youth Alliance and Young Cumbria are working together to make sure groups offering youth work are supported to offer high quality provision in safe and secure environments to young people from these communities. We have identified

key individuals and agencies and so far have met with most of the youth work providers across South Lakes to develop agreed short term and long term support plans to ensure these clubs not only survive but thrive. These plans will help them be “funding ready” so they can bring in the resources to support the long term delivery of youth work in their localities. We are extremely lucky in Cumbria to have a number of funders who support this type of youth work provision and they have been fully aware of the work that is going on in South Lakes thanks to the support of the locally elected members. This help includes: help to get governance of groups in place, help to ensure policies and procedures are in place to ensure safe provision, help to gain a quality standard in youth work, help with fundraising, help with training for staff and volunteers and ongoing support will be available under the Cumbria County Council Infrastructure Youth Contract when this short term piece of work has taken place. Many groups in your area like Flookburgh- Flooks 4 Youth are thriving and have already secured

enough funding to employ two sessional workers and are going to be working towards a youth work quality mark in the near future. Volunteers of course play a key role but having resources in place to employ sessional youth workers makes this a more sustainable model as many smaller villages would struggle to find sufficient volunteers to drive these clubs forward. Volunteers are and always have been the lifeblood of the third sector and many of these clubs have great management committees who are passionate about working with and empowering young people so they make a successful transition to adulthood. Other groups are currently fundraising to follow Flookburgh’s example and thanks to help from the new youth worker at Kent Estuary they will be helping clubs like Dent to continue to deliver much needed services to young people More information by contacting Cath Clarke, Cumbria Youth Alliance, Town Hall Community Hub, Oxford Street, Workington, CA14 2RS Telephone 01900 603131 mobile 07885 580 659

LOCAL PLAN

Development Briefs Phase 2: Issues and Options Consultation

Shaping New Housing Development and Communities in South Lakeland

Would you like the chance to get involved in the preparation of Development Briefs to guide the design, layout, access or green space provision on new developments near you? South Lakeland District Council is preparing a series of Development Briefs which, when adopted, will form part of the Local Plan for South Lakeland outside the National Parks. Development Briefs provide site specific planning guidance for large, complex or sensitive sites. They are used as guidance for considering planning applications. Development Briefs will inform developers and other interested groups of the constraints and opportunities presented by a site

and the type of development expected or encouraged by the Local Planning Authority. We have already adopted eight Development Briefs in Phase 1. We have now published for consultation a Proposals Document relating to the preparation of a further three briefs which comprise Phase 2. The Proposals Document is accompanied by maps and information about each of the sites subject to a Development Brief. Consultation events are being held in the areas local to the Development Brief sites to enable people to ask questions, discuss the opportunities, constraints and key issues for each site with Development Plans Officers, and participate in activities to explore ideas.

Grange now | DECEMBER 2015 - Next deadline 15th DECEMBER

Cartmel Players would like to advise all friends and former members that the decision has been made to wind up the Society. Sadly, member numbers have dwindled and anno domini is catching up with the remaining few. Our thanks go to all our supporters over many years. Our members have had great pleasure in performing , and we hope audiences have enjoyed our efforts. There are many happy memories and we would like to recall Tom Walker in particular, who founded Cartmel Players originally in the 1950s. You may also like to know that the remaining funds, which we had in the hope of doing future productions, have been donated to the following local good causes: Cartmel Village Hall, Lower Holker Village Hall, British legion Poppy Appeal - Cartmel branch, Grange branch of the NSPCC and St Mary’s Hospice, Ulverston. They all received £700 each.

Dear Editor,

I keep noticing the roof on Grange Library. It is a big one with only a slight incline, and the north end of it is covered in thick green moss. The tiles must be permanently saturated which can be doing it no good. The roof will only deteriorate if it is left and nothing is done, and then SLDC will decide the whole building need re-roofing, and they can’t afford it , and it will be an excuse to close it. So, the roof needs cleaning, and it could be done in a day. Job done! D R Rimmer (Mr)

Dear Editor

South Lakeland District Council has recently completed various works within Grange: 1. The wall top paving slabs missing from the top of the wall separating the Main Street car park and the Sunken Garden have now been replaced. 2. Underpinning work to support the wall been Main Street and the Ornamental Gardens has been carried out. 3. The Community Orchard and adjacent areas have been cut and tidied up for the winter. 4. The moat surrounding the Bandstand in the Park Road Gardens has been cleaned of weed and hopefully to mend a leak which appears to have developed. The lilies have been transferred to a temporary home. 5. Several trees in various parts of the Town have died or are dying due the frosts in the spring and are due to be dealt with over the winter. It is good to be able to report that SLDC is continuing to work in conjunction with Grange Town Council and groups of volunteers to maintain our open spaces and places of interest. Cllr. Ron Shapland.

Dear Editor

I am researching the history of Grange United Reformed Church, especially its earliest days as a Congregational Church. The congregation first met in the Liberal club from 1889 to 1891.Is there anyone who can provide information as to where the Liberal club was? The congregation then moved to a wooden building on the site of the present church. Does anyone have a picture of this building? The present building opened in August 1895, but it didn't become a Congregational Church until 1899

Dear Editor

I would like to publicly offer my appreciation to Lower Allithwaite Parish Council for all the positive things happening within the parish area. There are new benches in place, new footpath signs, the roads are being tidied up, we have a new community orchard in Allithwaite as well as other initiatives parish-wide.

Dear Editor

Alzheimer's Society Memory Walk Resounding Success On Saturday 10th October, 27 local people took part in a memory walk along the promenade to raise awareness, and much needed funds, for the Alzheimer's Society. I organised the walk when I discovered that the nearest walk was in Carlisle. We may not have had a huge number of people take part but the event was a lot of fun and really helped to raise awareness of Alzheimer's and the society. We even had a lady with Alzheimer's take part who was really happy to spend time out and about walking with other people.

( although it was supported by the Lancashire Congregational union). Any information about these times and of course anything about the history of the church since then would be welcomed. If anyone has any pictures of the interior or exterior of the church building, I would be most grateful if you would allow me to copy them and of course I would return the original. Are there any past family connections lurking in your cupboards, drawers or attics, have a look and let me know what you find.I can be contacted on dlamb502@gmail.com David Lamb This is all during a period of so called austerity and I congratulate the council on spending money in a meaningful way and acquiring additional funds at this time which are making a substantial different to the quality of life here. Many thanks to all members of the Parish Council. Andy Carter The event was supported by community development organisation Bluestreak Arts who provided infrastructure and a creative village with an arts workshop for the children taking part. We hope we can do so again next year.’ With people taking part from Grange, Flookburgh, Cartmel, Arnside, Carnforth and even as far as Preston the event was a resounding success. The funds raised will go towards much needed care support of people suffering with Alzheimer's and even assist with valuable research into finding a cure. Money raised totalled £318.62.Thank you everyone for your support and donations. Paula Easterlow, Allithwaite

LEGAL TALK With

Joanne Armer Solicitor

MEET YOUR NEW LOCAL SOLICITOR Now full time at our Grange Office

Divorce is never easy!

Divorce needn't be difficult with the right advice and at Poole Townsend we offer sound legal advice along with a fixed fee, so you will know exactly what you are paying for.

There are essentially five grounds for divorce: Adultery, Unreasonable Behaviour, Desertion, Having lived apart for more than two years (your spouse has to agree in writing), Having lived apart for more than five years (in which case there is no need for the spouse's agreement). If you both agree to the divorce you will usually not have to appear in court, but if the divorce is defended or if both of you petition, you may have to attend a court hearing. If you both agree to the divorce, you can apply for a decree nisi, an official certificate that says the judge agrees you can divorce. Six weeks after you have received this, you can apply for a decree absolute, the legal document that shows your marriage has ended. Divorce proceedings don't have to be combative and you do not need to go to court to sort out how your assets will be split, although clearly that depends on individual situations. Through collaborative family law, you and your solicitor could work with your former partner and their solicitor in four-way meetings, aimed at helping you reach the most suitable outcome by agreement, rather than through the courts. How soon you reach the end goal of receiving the decree absolute depends on how straightforward matters are and how acrimonious the separation. In an uncontested divorce you could expect to receive the decree within four to six months. In divorce, all assets acquired during the marriage are essentially laid out on the table and divided up according to fairness and need: pensions, overseas bank accounts, corporate bank accounts, property – everything. Pre-marital acquisitions, and things bought post-separation, are generally not divided up, unless they are needed. If you cannot reach a financial agreement, you might decide to involve a mediator to facilitate discussions, although they cannot offer legal advice. You can find a mediator through resolution.org.uk. We have a solicitor within the firm who is a member of Resolution. If you cannot agree on how to divide your assets, the next stage would usually be to instruct solicitors to help you negotiate a settlement agreement. Once you have reached an agreement, whether with or without external help, your solicitor will need to draw up a consent order, which must be signed by each party and their respective solicitors. A consent order is very important, it allows you to enforce clauses further down the line and can include a clean break order so that neither party can later make a claim. Don’t forget you can book a free initial appointment by dropping into the branch at Grange.

SOCIETY ROUND-UP

Grange Garden Society On Friday 16th October, members were entertained and educated by Frank Hoyle, who demonstrated the planting of an alpine trough. Frank explained the growing conditions experienced by alpines in the wild, how they grew in graded stony soil derived from the rock of the mountain and how to simulate those conditions in our gardens. The construction of hypertuffa troughs polystyrene fish boxes covered with a cement, sand and peat mixture - was explained in detail, along with various forms of raised beds in the garden. The placing of rocks in the trough and the choice of plants was demonstrated. The finished trough was raffled and £76 raised for a school in Nepal. The Three Parks Group The Three Parks Group volunteers have recently been given permission by SLDC to continue the renovation work of a further section of the Ornamental Gardens. The Group is also creating an exhibition about the numerous proposals, consultations and efforts which have been made to solve the problem of the derelict Grange

North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild The North Lonsdale Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 10th of November. Member Joanna Henson was leading on the subject of Dorset Buttons. Joanna started with a short power point presentation giving a brief history of Dorset Buttons and then moving on to the various styles and the methods of construction. Having seen the methods explained on screen proved extremely useful as members got to grips with the actual making of the buttons, some of which were quite small. By the end of the day members were pleased to have a good selection of buttons in various sizes and colours to show for their efforts. The next meeting is on Tuesday 8th of December when we will be having a Jacobs Join and Social. Meetings take place on the 2nd Tuesday of the month and visitors are most welcome. Grange Lecture Society The Nevile Burwell Memorial Lecture, ‘Great Elevations – a tale of adventure in high places’, was given on 27th October by mountaineer Finn McCann.

WHAT'S ON With the aid of excellent photographs, he took his audience with him as he and his team tested themselves on the UK’s hardest rock routes, Yosemite big walls, Alpine North Faces, and uncharted mountains in Greenland. His well delivered talk ended with a scary video filmed by Finn himself as he made a flying descent from a mountain top harnessed beneath a canopy known as a speedwing. In a fascinating lecture given on 10th November entitled ‘The changing face of China - what it means for us’, Professor Jeremy Clegg of Leeds University discussed China’s economic rise, how it affected the lives of Chinese people in the way of urbanisation and the rise of a Chinese middle class, and how it opened up China to the world, thereby providing business opportunities for UK and Chinese companies alike, so essential for economic growth in both countries. On 8th December adventure traveller David Edwards will give a talk entitled ‘Botswana: love, lions and democracy’. The lecture begins at 7.15pm in the Victoria Hall.

Newton and Field Broughton Broughton WI The November meeting of Newton and Field Broughton WI began with the business, which included a report on the Council Meeting on 20th October. Members were reminded that the meeting on 16th December will be the Christmas party and everyone must bring a plate, basin, cutlery and a glass (and wine if required). It will start at the earlier time of 7pm. The speaker was David Tomlinson from Warburtons Bakery. He has worked for the company for several years. He started by giving the history of the Warburton family and how it concentrated on baking bread some years ago to become the thriving business it is today. Then he gave an interesting insight into the process involved in bread making, giving practical illustrations. This most informative and humorous evening ended with a raffle, the prizes for which were a wonderful selection of Warburton’s products - and something for everyone.

Flat Roofs. Not always the problem you think they are. People often have a very negative view of flat roofs, believing they only last a short time and are a constant worry to the home owners. I wonder why, because if they are fitted properly using the using highest quality materials fitted by trained and competent operatives then a roof should last at least 40 years. Should I just leave it until it leaks? NO! is the simple answer to that one. Flat roofs are generally ignored until water stains or drips are noticed on the ceiling. Unfortunately by now it is not just the waterproofing which needs to be replaced but probably the roof decking and maybe even some structural timbers. What can I do now? If you have a roof which is 5 years old or more or one where you have concerns about you should get it thoroughly checked by a competent contractor. Ever considered a Green Roof? Is a roof that is completely or partially covered with vegetation. The roof is first waterproofed prior to the green roof being installed. Over the waterproofing a fleece protection layer is fitted followed by a water retention

ADULT EDUCATION

As we head towards the end of the Autumn term many changes lay ahead. Carolyn Lynn, our admin assistant has increased her hours, working 4 days a week.

From December 17th l will no longer be working for Cartmel Adult Education and we are to get an interim manager to take over from January 2016. There will also be some changes to our scheduled brochure offerings so l would strongly advise you to look at the website to see what is available or call us, as a number of tutors are retiring or stopping working for us from Christmas. It is a very unsettling time, largely due to uncertainty over the continued funding for community based learning (leisure learning) from July 2016, so watch this space for further announcements about classes. A BIG change is the new email system. Our old email address of adulted@ cartmelpriory.cumbria.sch.uk will be obsolete from the end of the autumn term and our new email will come into use. This is adulted@ cartmelprioryschool.co.uk. We will also have our own generic ones from mid-November which will be JGodden@cartmelprioryschool. co.uk or CLynn@cartmelprioryschool.co.uk. We strongly advise people to sign up for the

and drainage board. On top of this the growing medium is fitted along with the sedum or wildflower blanket. Turning your flat roof into a living area Flat roofs can easily be turned into extra living areas by the addition of paving or decking. I would always recommend the new surface is supported above the waterproofing and designed in a way to allow water to drain through it and onto the waterproofing. class of their choice after Christmas to enable us to gauge numbers and also ensure their continued viability. Remember- you can join at any time on most classes and we still represent excellent value for money as full fee is still subsidised. We have a few classes still in late November and early December including:Make and Repair Silver jewellery with Amanda Hunter at Cartmel Priory School on the 6th December.

Caren Threlfall is running a How to do Batik workshop on the 28th November, where you will be able to create some beautiful pieces of art using brightly coloured dyes and paints and hot wax as a “resist”. If you are creative we have some lovely workshops including Patterns in Glass on the 28th November with Marilyn Hale, which is a fused glass workshop. Marilyn is also starting a 3 week Christmas Glass gifts course on the 24th November, an ideal opportunity to make some beautiful, personalised gifts for your family and friends. We also plan to revive some classes after Christmas including an introduction to Art appreciation, a 6 week course with Cherrie Trelogan and to whet your appetite on some you can look forward to, here follows a list of the many great learning opportunities which lay ahead. In January we also have a course starting the Level 3 award in Education and Training, which is a nationally recognised qualification for those who wish to teach in the lifelong learning sector and is the minimum threshold award which the learning and skills service expects for you to teach in Adult Education. The fee for the course is £402.50 and the course lasts 13 weeks. If you fancy a change of direction or just want a chat about what the course entails call us. The class starts on January 13th, 2016. Finally, it is with extreme sadness that we heard of the death of Robin Webster. Robin worked as a tutor for us in the past and was a great friend to Adult Ed, always willing to help, contribute ideas for courses and was a larger than life character in the best sense of the word, with his encyclopaedic knowledge of the locality and his ebullient personality, enthusing everyone his met with his love for Grange. Our condolences go out to Gill and the family. He was a lovely man and will be really missed by so many. Jude and Carolyn
