Thanking For This

MUSIC by Dr. S. Justus

Music is a gift that God has given all humankind. Some listen to music, enjoy it, and take on life. Some create music, work on it, make it more beautiful and hearable, and present to those who would love to hear. Both are gifts from above. I have listened to lots of music, enjoyed it, took to my life, learned it, memorized some of it, and started to practice what I have heard. But making music was in my nerve since childhood. Reproducing the BGMs that I have heard, write lyrics for the tunes that I’ve heard, tried to bring out a new color of chords for my favorite songs. Gradually my motor nerves for music started to multiply and got strengthened. I have always dreamt of making new music for myself first, and then may be play or sing to someone who would love to hear me. Yes people were out there to listen to my solo songs as I sing in the American College Chapel, week after week, in the morning devotion. Joined choir and got trained properly. Learnt music formally and well formulated music began to flow from my brain. One of my professors initiated me to record some of the songs that I used to sing in the Chapel. That was where it all began. August 1998. My Dad produced a cassette album for me. 10 songs, sung by me and some of our Church friends. The following year second album, recorded in a professional studio. The next 10 years was formation and learning period for me, as I took different charges in music - from organists to choir director training the choir and singing in some places. In June 2008, was born my dream team, Chordiels, a male vocal band. Inspired by so many musicians, both known and unknown to them of me, the band was formed. Recordings resumed. My music roots got deeper in male vocal harmony, Tamil convention tunes, hymns, southern Gospel and country. Every song that I wrote, every music that I composed, revolved on one thing - “my personal experience with Jesus”. I know how I was, what I used to be, and how my Saviour touched me, and got hold of my hands in Him. With this conviction, I worked more on many things that are related to Music making. Practicing, producing and performing were my passions. Compose, record, mix it, master it, make it a CD, make a video, post in YouTube, make mobile apps, make the songs go digital, market it wherever I sing. What is the return on investment? Happiness. Money? Less taken, less earned. Outcome? Proclaim His love all over the world. At this juncture of the 10th anniversary for Chordiels, and 25th anniversary of my musical journey, all I have is but tears of thankfulness for the Lord. If it were not for the Lord’s love on me, I would have perished long ago. It is through the music that I loved, he touched me, and he leads me. All I can say now is, ‘Thank you Lord for you love. Thank you for this Music. Lead me on Precious Lord, lead me Home.’

Justus Those were the days when he was much acquainted with guitars, violins and keyboards, Justus knew only a little of what was out there in store for him. He was more of an artist, composing, performing, writing songs for more than 14 years, when he realized that he could also sing. After his post-graduation, Justus focused on choir conducting, vocal trainings, and music composition for nearly ten years, when he formed his own male vocal Quartet, the Chordiels Quartet in June 2008. With wider and greater vision of this music group, Justus expanded the Quartet into a formal Music Group, Chordiels Music, which now hosts a variety of missions all focusing on one vision "Making music for the Maker of all music". He always wanted to compose, hear good male vocal harmony, and bundle the magic of the harmony with the Message and throw it on people, who would really receive well. He loves doing that anytime and anywhere. He got his formal music training in instruments from Mr. Sam, Mr. Prakash, Mr. Victor Thangadurai, and his vocal trainings from Prof. Christopher Sherwood. He had worked with Mr. Stephen Thiagarajan, who found the musicianship in Justus and brought him out live on stages and churches. Justus grew up listening to the Great Gospel Legends like, DGS Dhinakaran, Mrs. Helen Satya and the Satya family, Sathy Victor, Jolly Abraham, Pastor Rajendran and many more. His inspirations into western music was from Jim Reeves, Bill Gaither, George Younce, Southern Gospel Music, Country and several other genres too. Justus received his Doctorate in Computer Science in 2011, and is happily married to Hepsiba Mabel, who is officially taking the activities of Chordiels Music. They are gifted with a son Handel Jonathan. Amidst his secular job as Professor in VIT University, Dr. Justus manages his 24/7 time for his Family, Chordiels, and his profession. If not me, then Who? and Why not? are the few philosophies that keeps Justus going.

Bass

Manley Right from childhood, singing in choirs is his passion. When there was a call from Chordiels Music, he gladly accepted to sing with the Quartet. He always tries to carry on his Dad’s legacy of cherishing good harmony music and singing bass. Manley has joined Chordiels as Bass, and is so excited to sing in a Quartet where he understands his part is so significant in bring up a strong harmony from the group. He loves to travel for practice sessions or for concerts without ever minding snow or sleet, rain or shine. His passion for singing is appreciable when on one concert day, he locked up his kids in the house, said a small prayer, ‘Lord, please take care of my kids’, and joined us. Late his wife would reach home from office, and take care of the kids, who were till them sleeping or playing with the tablet. That is his one of many sacrifices that shows his dedication to sing. He is an active user of social media, where he participates in many discussions, ecumenical singing groups, and smule groups. Next to singing, his passion is driving. After week long’s work, he drives with his family on a weekend trip, reach Kanyakumari, visit parents at Tuticorin, friends in Trinelveli, enjoy at Kutralam, and Sunday night’s drive back to Chennai, and attends office that following Monday. That shows his love for driving. Manley is working with an Verizon Technologies and is married to Sweetlyn and blessed with two cute boys, Alden and Hayden. He loves to spend time with family, take them out for dinner, shopping, eatouts and make the most of every little happiness the boys could get.

Baritone

Wesley As a choir boy in his early teens, Wesley could remember singing with the Christ Church Choir, Palayamkottai. The boy soprano knew all the hymns and keerthanais sung in his Church, and Wesley says ‘those songs stay with me all the time’. Wesley joined Chordiels in June 2017 as a baritone. He loved to sing. Later in his twenties, he realized that singing in harmony is much more rich. Now, singing for a male vocal harmony is much more than what could one imagine. He plans well in advance his schedules for the Church Choir, for Chordiels, for family, for friends. Self-disciplined, self taught man is Wesley, and so it becomes to work with Wesley for a concert, or a recording. He has seen so many ups and downs, and knows very well how painful is to get hurt. That has shaped his character to be a gentleman. When he joined Chordiels, he didn’t know any song or any part of the Chordiels. However, within a month he learned 20+ songs and started to sing in concerts with the quartet. His dedication is appreciated in many ways, and one such is, when he left his 1-year old and a loving wife who is on the family way in her 8th month to sing with Chordiels. Then his family with two infant boys dared to travel on the car for Christmas concerts. Wesley and his family worship the Lord at St. Luke’s Church, and he and his wife Havilah sings with the English Choir of the Church. He is married to Havilah, and is blessed with two cute boys Jaden and Johan.

Lead

Vasanth Obeying to the great calling to Minister the Master, right from his teenage, Vasanth has dedicated his voice, heart and his life to His call When he was 12 years old, Vasanth got hooked by the male vocal harmony of the "Four tall men", and so he collected all of their recordings and learnt all the songs the group had sung. Later in his twenties, he was called for an audition by the New Covenant Singers (NCS), which he then came to know was the group he admired the most. He joined the NCS as baritone and served the Lord using his voice in singing with NCS. It was an on-face call from the Lord right after Vasanth got back to life from a road-accident that slipped him to coma for two days. Vasanth completely surrendered his life to the Lord and started to minister among the youth, sing his Master's praises and serve as Spiritual Counselor for the broken hearted, and he continues to do all these works, to this day. Vasanth’s passion was to sing, and continue singing for eternity. Singing for 5+ years with NCS and with other groups, he was much passionate about the male vocal harmony that comes from the music he has been into. Inspired by the Gaither vocal band, and the voices of Jolly Abraham and David Phelps, Vasanth has joined hands with Chordiels to continue his music ministry, by singing for His Glory. Vasanth is married to Nancy Berlin, and is blessed with two boys - Meshach and Magizh. They serve the Lord as a family.

Mixed with Always Your songs are the impossible ruins that keep the hours on turn. Keep awe bare like sound at night. The candle burn. Ice melts and wax. The dirt on your mind. Engines roll in clutter. Clank cool and electrify the room. We always become mysterious— birds at the end of each evening. Whoever does the telling stops time like a crescendo. We hit blue notes so the edges of your honey jars rattle laughter against our teeth. Rhythm breaks like need or the knowledge a mouth organ has about breath and tone, blood and gravity and balance— all those sweet sounds that can make even windows shatter.

Giving thanks IN, not FOR

We are told in Scripture, “In everything give thanks.” It is a decree from God, recorded by Paul. It is a divine expectation. The psalmist says: “It is good to give thanks to the LORD ” (Psalm 92 :1). Psalm 100:4 says: “Give thanks to Him, bless His name.” Psalm 103: 1-5 says: “Bless the LORD, O my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul and forget none of His benefits; who pardons all your iniquities, wbo heals all your diseases; who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; who satisfies your years with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle.” God has given us ample reasons to thank Him. In fact, the Bible goes so far as to say that it is evil not to thank God. Paul says in Romans 1:21 that unrighteous men “did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened.” God is the entity that is the most taken for granted in the universe. There is absolutely nothing we can do that is not dependent on Him. Every breath we take depends on Him to provide the oxygen as well as to make our lungs work. Everything we have is supplied by a source beyond us. The money in our wallets was printed from the paper from trees that God made in the ground that He owns. The cars we drive were fitted together from the metal that God placed in the earth. The gold jewelry we wear around our necks or wrists or fingers is from a deposit God provided. Scripture says over and over that God is the source of all good things, so we know He doesn’t want us to forget the fact that He gave us everything we have. It is all His. Yet we are all ungrateful at times, unhappy with what we have and wanting more of what we don’t have. These attitudes prevent us from focusing on God’s graciousness. As I get older in life, I realize how many things I used to take for granted that I don’t take for granted so much anymore. I spent the entire day yesterday at my annual physical at the Cooper Clinic for my doctor, Dr. Cooper, to analyze, test, prod, probe and discover whether my body is functioning as it should, or if I need to make adjustments in my lifestyle or even in my schedule. Some of you may be in the same boat as me. You may be joining the group of us who are aging faster than we thought we ever would. Some of you may not be there just yet – but, hang on, because you will be here one day. We forget to be thankful for what we have when we take it for granted. This leaves us open to complaining more than we should and focusing on what we don’t have rather than being grateful for what we do. God says to give thanks in everything. That doesn’t mean you need to give thanks FOR everything. You don’t need to give thanks FOR that bad day. Or FOR that bad relationship. Or being passed over at work. Financial hardship. Whatever it is – you are not to give thanks FOR the difficulties, but rather IN the difficulties. That is a very important distinction, and one I think we often miss. Giving thanks IN everything shows a heart of faith that God is bigger than the difficulties and that He can use them, if you approach Him with the right heart and spirit, for your good and His glory. It’s hard to give thanks FOR everything – and because it is, we often skip over it. But when you realize you are not called to give thanks FOR everything but rather IN everything – you are on your way to living the victorious Christian life. Do me a favor? Say a pray of thanks right now. And I’ll thank God for you!

Handel Studio Handel Studio was first installed as a small home studio in one of our living rooms in our house. We had a desktop system, a sound-card, 8-channel mixer, 2.1 creative speakers and a rented Shure mic. Later when we started doing projects on a regular basis, like once in every year, we bought a Shure microphone of our own. When some of our friends wanted to record their albums, and the demand grew. So we bought a high-end Yamaha keyboard, Cort acoustic guitar, 5-stringed Cort bass guitar, new 8-channel Yamaha mixer, M-Audio sound card. But still we were using the desktop and creative speakers. In 2014, the demand for more quality recording and recording space increased. The entire recording studio was revamped with new equipments. Now Handel Studio has the following in a separate own building of ours. 1. MAC station - with audio/video HD cards & Logic Pro 2. M-Audio Sound Card 3.
