Christ our Center Children our Blessing Justice our Passion September 2015

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who brings good news —Isaiah 52:7 Fall has always been my favorite time of year. Beginning a new church year feels like a wonderful adventure. This year I am excited about our new Church School curriculum. Now the scripture we read in worship will, often times, be the same as the children study in Church School. After church, parents and children can talk about the stories they heard and what each learned. I hope it makes for some interesting discussions on the ride home. I am looking forward to a new church photo directory with all the names and faces of our newest members. If you haven’t signed up to get your picture taken, don’t forget. We need you! I am also excited about our Stewardship theme for this year’s campaign, “Embracing the Vision.” I have been deeply moved by the testimonies I have heard about why people give to CCPC. Our beloved community has a tremendous impact on people’s lives as we share the love of God in Christ Jesus. I am most excited about welcoming our new Associate Pastor, the Rev. Eric Peltz. Pastor Eric moved to the area in August with his wife Ellen and their three children, Theo, Henry and newborn Eliza. He has been getting to know CCPC and settling into his new home. The whole Peltz family has been on a tremendous adventure in leaving their home in Ohio to answer God’s call to come to CCPC. There are some ways that we, as Pastor Eric’s new congregation, can help him know how excited we are about his coming to pastor among us.

First, we can pray for Pastor Eric and his family. We can ask God to be with them and give them strength as they make a new life for themselves here in DC. We can pray for blessings as they meet new people and find their way. It’s important to tell Pastor Eric we are praying for him and his family. When I was young, my father was a physician at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center. The hospital was run by the Sisters of Mercy. One day one of the nuns told me how she prayed for me as part of her daily practice to pray for the hospital staff and their families. I have never forgotten the love and strength I felt knowing that someone was praying for me on a regular basis. Even though I did not know her, she was holding me close to God and that has made a difference in my life. The second thing that we can do to welcome Pastor Eric and his family is to introduce ourselves again and again. We need to say our names, over and over. Wear your name tag in worship! Pastor Eric has more than 700 names to learn! The title of the Vision study we conducted a few years ago is “Dreaming a New Day.” With the arrival of our new Associate Pastor our new day is shining brightly.

Welcome Little Ones!

59 Years of WNS

Childcare for infants and toddlers is available every Sunday morning from 8:45 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in Rooms 106/108 beginning on September 20th. Our childcare attendants, Mala Sharpe, Beth Charcos, Sirima Kudagodage, Diana Bagaipo, and Arlene Ng welcome our youngest members to their first church experience. Ask Kristen Riley if you have any questions or suggestions or if you would like to help out. You may contact Kristen at (202)-237-8336 or kriley8@msn.com

CCPC’s Weekday Nursery School begins its 59th year on September 8th with the delightful chatter of more than 125 children. Twenty-two dedicated teachers and assistant teachers care for these children promoting our philosophy of “Learning Through Play.” We have 11 classes of Toddlers to 5-year-olds using 8 classrooms. It’s great to be back together and to explore living green in the nursery school! Tours for prospective parents for the 2016-2017 school year will begin in October, so plan your visit now. For information, please contact WNS Director Cindy Walsh at (202)-363-2209 or wns@chevychasepc.org.

Awww...Nuts!! That is, NO nuts!! Due to the frequency and sometimes severity of allergies to nuts (and nut products like peanut butter) CCPC is committed to making our whole church building nut-sensitive. (Go ahead…we’ve all already “cracked” all of the jokes you can think of !) But this is no joke…many of our church’s children and some of our Nursery School children have severe reactions if they eat nuts in cookies or foods, and others even have air-borne sensitivities. So we are asking that we not serve snacks or refreshments or foods which contain nuts anywhere in the building (Sunday brunch/refreshments, memorial gatherings, parties, etc.) so that we can all be safe. If you have questions or would like to see a list of off-limit items, please contact the Christian Education Committee or Lynn Jostes.

ASP Begins 29th Year

The After School Program, CCPC’s ministry to the children of our community who need a safe and welcoming place to be after school and on school holidays while their parents work, opened Monday, August 24th for its 29th year. A dedicated staff of 9 will welcome 60 elementary school-aged children to three classrooms on the third floor of the Education Wing, and provide homework assistance in Calvin Hall. During the school year, the children perform community service such as assembling sandwiches for TAP clients and making Christmas stockings for the patients at Children’s Hospital, and enjoy recreation, crafts and focused activities. For information, contact ASP Director Tempe Thomas at (202)-966-8385 or asp@chevychasepc.org.

Welcome Letter from Pastor Eric Friends in Christ, Radical hospitality. That’s what I’ve seen and heard and felt from every corner of this congregation. From the stocked pantry in our apartment to a staff lunch party here at the office, each and every person connected to this congregation has shown the love of Christ to me and my family. I want to especially thank the APNC for stepping up in big ways for us. I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to repay you for your kindness, but in a place where we proclaim the power of “grace upon grace” I am grateful for gifts given regardless of the worthiness of the recipient. The Peltzes are grateful to be the recipients of your gracious hearts. Here are some fun facts about me and my family. I hope you find them amusing, interesting, or better, a place to begin a conversation Theo enjoys the sights in the big city! with us as we grow in the love of the Savior alongside you. Eric – enjoys a good game of Ultimate Frisbee; sat at a lunch table with Jim Collins last week at the Global Leadership Summit; grew up responding to the moniker “P-Diddy;” loves music of just about every variety. Ellen – writes grants for McCarter Theatre in Princeton and especially enjoys their New Play Development work; a bit of an Anglophile; grew up performing in Indianapolis’ professional and semi-professional theater scene, as well as an 1800’s living history museum; takes marvelous care of our children; has the most beautiful smile in the whole entire world. Theo (3) – starts at the CCPC Nursery School next month; obsessed with trains; likes to run…. A LOT! Henry (2) – adores his big brother (mostly, except when his toy has been snatched by the older tyrant); full name is Henderson (named after Ellen’s father’s hometown in Kentucky); currently titles everybody he likes “silly.” Eliza (1 month) – Nurses a lot… likes being held... did a GREAT job living in three places in the last 2 weeks… and starting to smile! It’s a gift to be here as an Associate Pastor in a place where my family has already seen immense signs of life in this congregation and in this city. As we look forward to weaving our story into this place, I’d love to share a meal or a coffee with you and begin to weave strands of connection, stitched in love, knit for the sake of furthering the gospel together. Step 1: Sew me into your contact book. Eric@chevychasepc.org is my email, and my cell is (815)-6033880. Step 2: Give me a call or text. I’d love to hear your story. Thanks for agreeing with God that I should be a part of yours. Henry's only frustration is that we don't ride the Metro every day!

Shalom, Eric

“Getting to Know You, Getting to Know All About You” Do you remember that charming song from The King and I? It is good to get to know each other and to connect with visitors if we wish to see our church grow. Some of our newest members have told us that they joined CCPC due, in part, to the warm and friendly atmosphere. Many of us tend to be reserved about reaching out to people we do not know. Here are some tips that may encourage us to become acquainted with our visitors and learn more about one another:  You may be uncertain whether someone is a visitor or simply an attendee you do not know, Greet them by saying, “I’m ________. I don’t believe we have met.” If the response is that they are visiting, ask them, “What brings you to CCPC?” Asking them about themselves before extolling the positives attributes of the church is important. Make it about them!  You may follow-up with questions such as:  Are you new to the area?  Have you been a member or attending a church?  What did you like about your church?

After hearing their responses, you may want to share information about an activity at CCPC that may be of interest.  It is also critical for us to note the importance of the Red Friendship Folder. If a visitor provides contact information, we can follow-up with a letter from the pastor and a note from a member of the church. When sitting near a visitor, simply show them the folder and encourage them to leave their phone number, e-mail or street address.  Inviting a visitor to accompany you for coffee in Chadsey Hall following the service is a powerful way to make a connection. This is a good time to introduce them to other members or friends who may share an interest.  In addition to visitors who are new to us, we should also reach out to those who attend services on a regular basis and suggest that they make an appointment to have their pictures taken for our new Pictorial Directory. Friends as well as members are welcome to be listed.  Remember to wear your name tag as a welcoming gesture. Did you know that The King and I was based on a novel, Anna and the King of Siam, published in 1944? This book was written by a CCPC member, Margaret Landon. Ms. Landon and her husband were Presbyterian missionaries in Siam, now Thailand. After leaving the mission field, they lived in Washington for many years. A short biography of Ms. Landon was found on the Rogers & Hammerstein web-site: www.rnh.com/bio/143/Landon‑Margaret

Health-ercise 60+ Continues

The Connections Committee invites CCPC men and women, neighbors and friends aged 60+ to join the next six-week series of one-hour learning, stretching, and muscle strengthening classes beginning Monday, September 14th (through October 26th, excluding October 12th) at 2:00 pm in Chadsey Hall. The class will be taught by Will Yates, a certified Fit & Well Senior instructor. There are no floor exercises but participants should dress comfortably. The class is “Basic Training for your Body” including a combination of low impact exercises and lots of instruction on the basic movement of all muscles, how to breathe, sit, stand correctly, etc. Cost of the class is $10.00 per session or $50.00 for all six. To register, contact Nancy Wilson (nwilson@eversco.com or 202-966-5286,) register on the church website, or call the church office (202-363-2202.) Seeking New Member Shepherds Would you like to be a shepherd? CCPC’s Involving Team is working on ways to stay connected with new members during their first year and to help them get involved in the life of our church. We’re continuing to add to our list of current members who are willing to sponsor a new member with an occasional friendly phone call, emails about upcoming church events or an occasional cup of coffee together. It’s up to you! If you’re interested, contact Nikki Heidepriem to volunteer and for more ideas: nheidepriem@heidepriemassociates.com or (301)-907-0162. You could make a new friend at CCPC! Columbarium Update The project to add 88 new spaces to the Columbarium is nearing completion. We are awaiting the delivery of the permanent capstones for these new spaces within the next four to six weeks. With the completion of these new spaces we anticipate that the Columbarium will continue to meet the needs of our members for at least the next dozen years before any further expansion would need to be considered. Thanks to all who have helped to make this lasting memorial to our members a reality At its August meeting the Columbarium Committee recommended to increase the all-inclusive cost for a space from $1,650 to $2,000 in order to assure that funds will be available to maintain the Columbarium in perpetuity. This cost includes the space, urn, opening, closing, the purchase and installation of a brass plaque. It should be noted that it is no longer possible to purchase a space only and defer the other cost items to the time of need. Experience has shown that almost all families prefer to purchase a turn-key package, where all inurnment costs are included. For those who have already purchased a space and plaque, with the cost of urn, opening and closing to be paid later there is no change. The new cost of $2,000 per space, or $8,000 for a four-space niche will take effect November 1, 2015. The Columbarium Committee
