Christ Our Center Children Our Blessing Justice Our Passion June 2017

This summer’s congregational sabbatical meets at the juncture of Beauty and Sabbath. Through Beauty, God inspires us and draws us to God. Sabbath involves both worship and rest. Both Pastor Molly Blythe-Teichert’s study of icons and our own varied worship promise renewal. We pray that sabbath will open us to the Holy Spirit’s guidance and transformation. This autumn, CCPC will continue significant discernment and long-rage planning. This front page of the newsletter is written as an invitation in 3 parts, a moment to pause and pray. As a devotional, it could be used personally and in groups across this month. A: Breathing scripture Perhaps a moment of quiet in the day, devices turned off, will be an offering of yourself to God. Perhaps on the metro, or in the early morning or before bed. Receive several nourishing breaths. Let yourself be supported by the floor or your chair. Rest. Then slowly read this scripture. Does something in it stir an emotion or a sensation in your body? What in touches you? Would you like to revisit this verse (perhaps taping it in a place you see regularly)?

would you depict that God creating light? Is there another image that you’d like to let speak to you again and again? Or, is there another images which inspires you, which you’d like to regularly bring into prayer? For highly visual people, God may find us through our eyes. C: “A theologian is one who prays.” (Eastern Orthodox maxim) Many of us receive God through prayerful study; the “logic” of theological language speaks to us. Some of us may be wondering about focusing on Beauty. We might say, “But beauty is so fragile.” Or “With all the assaults against human rights, and the earth, and the civic order, why focus on Beauty?” Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the Russian author and Soviet-era dissident, wrote in the midst of much social turmoil. In 1970, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. The depth moves me to read and reread this excerpt from his Nobel lecture:

“So perhaps that ancient trinity of Truth, Goodness and Beauty is not simply an empty, faded formula as we thought in the days of our self-confident, materialistic youth? If the tops of these three One thing I have asked from trees converge, as the scholars mainthe LORD, that I shall seek: tained, but the too blatant, too direct That I may dwell in the house stems of Truth and Goodness are of the LORD all the days of crushed, cut down, not allowed through my life, To behold the beauty - then perhaps the fantastic, unpredictaof the LORD, And to meditate ble, unexpected stems of Beauty will in God’s temple. push through and soar to that very same (Psalm 27:4, NASB) place, and in so doing will fulfil the work Creation of Light, Michael Kapeluck of all three? After reading, just rest in the quiet “In that case Dostoevsky's remark, for a few moments. What response arises? After all he was granted to see much, a man of fantasB: Praying with Icons tic illumination. And in that case art, literature might really be able to help the world today?” Psalm 36:9 says “In Your light, we see light.” The icon on this page offers an image from the Creation story in Genesis 1. Gaze at it for a moment. Then, try closing your eyes and remembering as much of it as you can. Does something in this image draw your attention? Gaze afresh at the icon. Can you see something new? Does some part of the image unsettle? How

May we all receive God’s Beauty this summer from our own lives and CCPC’s worship. And may these seeds blossom to bless you and the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church family for years to come. Through Beauty, God is always seeking us. Yours in Christ,

Pastor Mark Greiner

The Offering will be dedicated on Pentecost Sunday, June 4. The Pentecost Offering this year will support the work of the World Food Program to alleviate famine in South Sudan. South Sudan faces a catastrophic humanitarian crisis created by chronic instability and civil war. Warring factions have destroyed the means of food production. Nearly five million people are estimated to be severely food insecure with over 100,000 people facing immediate starvation. Displacement, rising food prices and restricted humanitarian access have compounded rising levels of hunger. WFP is leading a massive effort to respond to the first declared famine since Somalia in 2011. WFP’s emergency operation aims to provide life-saving assistance to 3 million people displaced and directly affected by conflict and acute food insecurity through food distributions and targeted supplementary feeding to prevent and treat acute malnutrition. Additionally, WFP’s protracted relief and recovery operation aims to provide food assistance to 1.1 million people, focusing on refugee populations and areas in South Sudan that are more stable. This program provides blanket and targeted supplementary feeding to prevent acute malnutrition, food assistance for assets, cash-based transfers, food for education and Purchase for Progress. Please give generously using the special offering envelopes in the pews on Pentecost Sunday, or by check made out to “CCPC” noting “Pentecost Offering” in the memo line, or credit or debit card using CCPC’s website: http:// ChevyChasePC.org/give/, noting the amount and “Pentecost Offering” in the “Other” donations boxes.

Summer Church School Plans at CCPC Summer schedules bring opportunities for new patterns of life together, and this is part of our Sunday morning life together as well! As we worship as one church family at 10:00 a.m. throughout the summer, we will welcome children (completed Grade 3 and up) to remain in the sanctuary following the Time with Children to experience the rhythm and wonder of worship. Beginning June 4 and continuing through the month of June, younger children (Age 3 through completed Grade 2) are invited (but not required) to go to special church school classes for the rest of the hour. Ages 3-4 will meet in Room 180, 5s/Kindergarten in Room 170, and Grades 1 and 2 (completed) will meet in Room 160 on the first floor in the Education Building. Childcare for infants is available in Rooms 106/108. SPECIAL NOTE: We still need teachers in order to offer all of our classes this summer. Please look for the chart during coffee time and sign up to teach one of our children’s classes. It’s a wonderful way to get to know some of the youngest members of our church family!

FOR ADULTS: Faith Trek is a small group of CCPC adults who are curious about their faith and the world and who want to explore in the company of a circle of friends. The circle expands easily, and we would be delighted to have you join us. The group is choosing a book to read for the summer and operates with the idea that if there are 2-3 who can be there, we will meet. Class meets in the Conference Room (on the second floor of the center building, alley side at the end of the hall) from 11:00 - 12:00 noon each Sunday (after worship.) Check with Margaret Chan (301/656-5034) if you have any questions. The Bible in Context will be completing its study of the Acts of the Apostles through the month of June (excluding June 4). Teachers Dottie Boerner and John Weicher invite you to come explore the spread of the Gospel and the establishment of the church in the first century guided by the Holy Spirit, especially in the last journeys of the Apostle Paul. All are welcome to join us at 11:00 - 12:00 noon in the Library (following worship) and you don’t even need to bring a Bible – the Library has several you can borrow! Come try us out!

Summer Sunday School Teachers Sought!! We Need Your Help!! Summer Sunday School begins on Sunday, June 4th and continues through Homecoming Sunday, September 10th during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Two to three classes for young children through second grade (completed) will be available, but only with your help. Teams of teachers are needed for each age group and a simple curriculum is provided to facilitate your teaching. Please check your calendar and see which Sunday you might be able to help! The sign-up poster is posted in Chadsey Hall during Sunday Brunch and Coffee Time for your convenience. You may contact Lynn Jostes at the church (202-363-2202 x 22 or lynn@chevychasepc.org) for more information or to sign up for this special opportunity to teach our youngest children. Thanks for your help!!

Financial Planning Seminar Wednesday, June 7, 2017 7:00-9:00 p.m. in Firesides The scripture mentions money and its effect on spiritual growth more than anything else in the bible. Fear of “not having enough” money prevents people from living a life of joy, and limits their spiritualty. Stewardship wants to provide our members with information that might help you navigate the stressful waters of managing money. Please join church members on Wednesday evening, June 7th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Firesides for a general financial planning seminar by Financial Advisor, Tripp Onnen of the Smyth Onnen Group at Morgan Stanley. This general overview will address many topics of interest, including investment management strategy, retirement planning, estate planning, education (529) planning, taxadvantaged charitable giving, and other general financial planning strategies.

Contact Mary Frances Pearson (mfpearson1@gmail.com) if you have any questions.

Come Celebrate Cindy and Tempe! Saturday, June 1o, 2017 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. in Chadsey Hall Sixty-seven years of combined service. Thousands of children loved and parents nurtured. It will be hard to imagine our Weekday Nursery School and After School Programs without Cindy Walsh and Tempe Thomas, but they are retiring in June. We hope that everyone will join us as we celebrate their ministry during 10:00 a.m. worship on Sunday, June 11, 2017 and greet them at a reception following worship in Chadsey Hall. The Weekday Nursery School and After School Staffs also invite you to an Open House honoring Cindy and Tempe that they are hosting for current families and alums on Saturday, June 10 from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. in Chadsey Hall. Everyone is certainly welcome at either or both events; we can never say thank you enough. Dedicated accounts have been set up to receive monetary gifts for them individually. As always with purse gifts, by IRS standards this gift is not tax deductible. There are several ways to contribute:

 If you send a check to the church, make the check to CCPC and write "Cindy" or “Tempe” on the memo line if it is intended as a gift to either of them.  You may bring a check to Sunday worship and put it in the offering plate. Again, make the check to CCPC and write "Cindy" or “Tempe” on the memo line.  Finally, you can give online through the church’s website (www.chevychasepc.org). Again, please write “Cindy” or “Tempe” in the “Other” box beside your gift amount. Another way to show your gratitude would be to make a donation in honor of them to the Scholarship Fund of either the Weekday Nursery School or the After School Program. If this is your intention, please mark your check accordingly. Scholarship gifts are tax deductible.

Come help us say thank you!
