Beginning Sept. 14, we will be trying a new Sunday morning schedule. The first service will begin at 9:15 and the second service will begin at 11:15. There will be opportunities for adult education and fellowship in between the services, as well as an enrichment time for children. Why are we doing this? All through the Visioning process we heard the call for more time for adult education and fellowship on Sunday mornings. We also heard the call for more time for fellowship especially between the 9:30 folks and the 11:00 folks. One of our core values is a strong sense of belonging to our family of faith. Opening up the time between the services will allow the pastors time to teach, pray individually with people, or simply spend more time in fellowship with people. Will Children’s Sunday School change? Sunday School for Toddlers & Twos through 8th grade will continue to be simultaneous with the first worship service. Children and youth will leave the first service for Sunday

School at 9:30 and be in Sunday School until 10:15. Children’s enrichment is available from 10:20 to 11:05 so that parents also have the opportunity to participate in adult enrichment classes: fellowship, learning, or prayer. What if we don’t like it? It will take time to adjust to the changes. We will try the new schedule for the program year. If we need to make changes along the way, we will make changes. At the end of the year, we will evaluate the pluses and minuses and see where we go from there. How can I help? The best thing you can do to help right now is to get ready! If you are interested in helping with a particular ministry, contact me to learn more about opportunities and get connected. Save the schedule shown here and post it on the fridge. God’s blessings,

Summer Church School Plans at CCPC Summer schedules bring opportunities for new patterns of life together, and this is part of our Sunday morning life together as well! As we worship as one church family at 10:00 a.m. throughout the summer, we will welcome children (completed Grade 3 and up) to remain in the sanctuary following the Time with Children to experience the rhythm and wonder of worship. Beginning July 13 and continuing through September 7, younger children (age 3 through completed Grade 2) are invited (but not required) to go to special church school classes for the rest of the hour. Ages 3-5 will meet in Room 180, and kindergarteners through second graders will meet in Room 170 on the first floor in the Education Building. Childcare for infants is available in rooms 106/108. SPECIAL NOTE: We still need teachers in order to offer all of our classes this summer. Please look for the chart during coffee time and sign up to teach one of our children’s classes. It’s a wonderful way to get to know some of the youngest members of our church family!

FOR ADULTS: Faith Trek is a small group of CCPC adults who are curious about their faith and the world and who want to explore in the company of a circle of friends. The circle expands easily, and we would be delighted to have you join us. This summer the group is reading Speaking Christian by Marcus Borg. All adults are invited to join the discussions in the Conference Room (on the second floor of the center building, alley side at the end of the hall) from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each Sunday (except July 6 and August 31). Check with Margaret Chan (301/656-5034) if you have any questions.

Summer Sunday School Teachers Sought!! Summer Sunday School began on June 1 and continues through Homecoming Sunday, September 7, during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Two classes for young children through second grade (completed) will be available, but only with your help. Teams of teachers are needed for each age group and a simple curriculum is provided to facilitate your teaching. There are only six slots left! Please check your calendar and see which Sunday you might be able to help! Signup sheets will be posted in Chadsey Hall during refreshments for your convenience. You may also contact Kristen Riley (202//237-8336 or kriley8@msn.com) or Lynn Jostes at the church (202/363-2202 x 22 or lynn@chevychasepc.org) for more information or to sign up for this special opportunity to teach our youngest children. Thanks for your help!!

Save the Date for CCPC’s 14th Annual Men’s Steak Cookout! Saturday, September 20, from 4 p.m. till dusk at Bucks Pavilion in Seneca Creek Park. We look forward to this traditional fall fellowship event for the men of the church. Bring a friend and join us!

Project Daffodil Needs You! CCPC has been given a beautiful ongoing gift from the gardens of Mary Hoff…Daffodils!! Mary died last March and her children would like the church to have her daffodil collection to enhance the flower beds at the church. Mary didn’t just have regular daffodils in her collection, but some exotic and rare ones in all shades of yellow, white, and peach! The bulbs would need to be dug at Mary’s house on Chesapeake and transplanted at CCPC at the end of their growing season in July. We are looking for gardening help the week of July 14-20 for the move. Please contact Lynn Jostes (lynn@chevychasepc.org) if you would like to help some evening or during the day and we’ll get things organized.

Planning for Fall Adult Education Classes The Christian Education Committee is busily planning for new Sunday morning study opportunities for adults beginning on September 14. All adult classes will now be “in the gap” between worship services from 10:2011:05 am on Sunday mornings. Familiar classes (Faith Trek, Open Forum, and the Bible in Context Class) will continue, and look forward to welcoming new members. We also plan to offer one or two other options… perhaps Parenting Children in Faith (giving parents an opportunity to share their goals, challenges, and successes with raising children to be faithful Christians in today’s culture, and offering practical suggestions for spiritual growth in the family.) Or perhaps a small group Bible Study or ??? Please let us know if you have ideas for topics for consideration, OR if you are willing to organize or teach/lead a group, OR if you would be willing to serve on an Adult Education Team to coordinate all of the adult study options at CCPC. Please contact Lynn Jostes at lynn@chevychasepc.org or speak to Tom Morgan when you see him and join our exciting work.

Save the Date for a CCPC Outing to the Nationals Baseball Game at Nats Park Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 1:35 p.m. The Connections Committee and Ron, Nolan, and Graham Wick invite CCPC baseball fans to join them at the ballpark! The Wicks will make arrangements for a discounted block of seats for CCPC ($19.00 each) and we’ll coordinate transportation. Please let Ron know (rwick@cozen.com) ASAP if you are interested so he can get a feel for how many seats to order.

CCPC Youth On The Move

(Note: this is one in a series of articles answering the question “What difference does CCPC make?”) By Priscilla Huff In the early hours of Sunday, July 6, six teenagers and three adults will pile their duffle bags, spare pillows, and themselves into the church van for the 9- to 10-hour drive to the Montreat Conference Center. Formally, this is the 2014 Montreat Youth Conference. This year's theme is Rooted & Reaching, allowing youth to explore their Christian identity in the digital age. I never went to Montreat as a teenager, but my sister did. At the time, I did not understand why my sister and my Firesides friends came back each fall talking endlessly about Montreat and energizers and rock-hopping. My first experience was 21 years ago as a leader —and in less than one day, I began to understand. The conference happens at the Montreat Conference Center just over the mountain from Asheville, NC. It’s a perfect emerald jewel of a place, with the college arrayed around beautiful Lake Susan. It is a place where teenagers willingly get up for five days in a row for 8:30 a.m. worship. They participate in guided spiritual discussions and meet other Presbyterian youth from across the South and the country. Montreat is a safe place where kids have time to think: to discuss the big questions of life while rock-hopping across the stream or hiking the trail up the mountain, or to discuss the small questions of life, like which is the best flavor of ice cream at the Huck (the little on-campus ice cream shop). In July, six teenagers and four adults will again pile into the church van for the 12-hour drive to rural Maine. They'll be traveling to the Mission at the Eastward, a group which has been working in Maine for more than three decades with the North Parish Housing Ministry. Their goal is to help the people of rural Maine stay in their homes by painting, adding wheelchair ramps, roofing, and doing anything to keep a house standing. "They think they are going to serve," says Zak Klase, who has taken many trips to Maine. “But most of the time, the kids will learn as much as they give to these Maine residents." The last time the CCPC youth went on a mission trip, it was to New Orleans in 2009. I went on that trip with then Associate Pastor Steve Robertson. We did a variety of projects during the week, but one image really stuck with me. We were painting a public school, and parents were bringing their children in to register for school. I remember being high up on a ladder, painting window sills, and seeing this tiny boy with his eyes wide, thinking, “What is this place? And why are they painting pretty blue and grass green all over?” And I thought that this is what mission trips are all about - children are our blessing - and no matter how sweaty I am, I can, and these kids can, bring something a little better to their lives.

Summertime offers a different rhythm to our lives and learning. The CE Committee invites you to select one of these film screening and discussion options at CCPC on selected Sundays this summer as we reflect on a potpourri of ideas throughout our society’s history: Sunday, July 13, 2014 11:30 a.m. in Geneva Hall Les Miserables (PG-13) This musical version of Victor Hugo’s novel tells the story of Jean Valjean, an ex -convict who, inspired by a kindly bishop, decides to turn his life around. He becomes mayor of and factory owner in a French town. He is always alert to the risk of being captured again by police inspector Javert, who is ruthless in hunting down lawbreakers, believing they cannot change for the better. One of his factory workers, Fantine, blames him for her being cast into a life of prostitution. When she dies, he feels responsible and agrees to take care of her illegitimate daughter, Cosette, though he must first escape Javert. Later, when Cosette is grown, they are swept up in the political turmoil in Paris, which culminates in the Paris Uprising of 1832. Sunday, July 27, 2014 11:30 a.m. in Geneva Hall Frozen (PG) Two royal sisters, Anna and Elsa, are separated by the harm that the magic powers of the older one can bring to others. When Elsa becomes queen and accidentally brings winter to the kingdom, she flees to the mountains, and Anna, with some delightful companions, pursues her so they can bring back summer to the kingdom. Sunday, August 10, 2014 11:30 a.m. in Geneva Hall The Life of Pi (PG) Director Ang Lee creates a groundbreaking movie event about a young man who survives a disaster at sea and is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with another survivor...a fearsome Bengal tiger. Come watch and discuss your reaction…”Is it real?” Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church
