UNITED IN FAITH & LOVE Jesus had a most eclectic group of disciples and friends. Peter, Andrew, James, and John were fishermen. Matthew was a despised tax collector. Thomas was a doubter. Simon was a zealot. Jesus befriended Pharisees, wealthy women, lepers, the blind, and a woman once possessed by seven demons. Quite a diverse group of folks! As contemporary disciples and friends of Jesus, we too, are a diverse group of folks. We range in age from 1 to 100. Some have been part of our church for generations. Others have only recently moved to the area. Some of us connect to the church through music or needlework. Some find their place among the refugees and the poor. What unites us all is our love for Christ and for this community of faith. Our activities in February reveal some of the many hearts of CCPC. Our Season of Peacemaking concludes on February 11 with guest preacher Daryl Davis. Mr. Davis is a Grammy award-winning musician, actor, and author and may be best known for his work in race relations. He is African-American and has spent years befriending members of the KKK and convincing them to leave the organization. He has loved those who count him as an enemy and they are now his friends. The evening before, on Saturday, February 10, bring your friends for dinner and dancing as Chadsey Hall is transformed for an elegant Casino Night. It’s not just for fun, this fundraiser will help support the church’s children’s ministries. It may sound a bit like Mardi Gras which is just fine because a few days later Lent begins on February 14. At our Ash Wednesday service, we will open our hearts to God’s forgiveness and we will receive God’s eternal love. We end the month gathering together for our Annual Congregational Meeting and Brunch on February 25. As we remember all the events of 2017, we will look ahead to 2018 to see what new visions God has for us in the coming year. In our serving and caring, in our worship and our praying we hear the heartbeat of God. Therefore with the Psalmist let us say, I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds. (Psalm 91:1) God's Blessings, Molly

Get your tickets by visiting chevychasepc.org/february-fundraiser mail or by dropping off your payment at the church office. Please make checks payable to Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and in memo line write "007 or Casino Night".

Faith Trek | 10:00 – 11:05 a.m | Room 350-A, 3rd floor, Education Building Faith Trek is a small group of CCPC adults who are curious about their faith and the world and who want to explore in the company of a circle of friends. The circle expands easily, and we would be delighted to have you join us. The group is beginning a new book, The Third Peacock: the Problem of God and Evil by Robert F. Capon. Check with Margaret Chan (301/656-5034) for more information.

Open Forum | 10:00 – 11:05 a.m | Geneva Hall, 2nd floor, Education Building Open Forum offers a forum for the discussion of a variety of topics on the intersection of faith and life. Join us in February for these discussions:

February 4 – Let It Begin with Me: Peacemaking Through Conflict Resolution. Peace is not esoteric – it starts with us; and Leila Peterson, through dialogue and workshopping, will show us how. Leila Peterson has provided conflict resolution, change management, and leadership development services to both governmental and private clients for more than twenty years. Her practice focuses on public and community conflict, specializing in processes that allow government, private, and community stakeholders to tackle difficult issues together. She’ll also tell us about her work as the Executive Director of SchoolTalk, which prevents and resolves Special Education disputes in DC schools. (schooltalkdc.org) February 11 -- Season of Justice Speaker: Daryl Davis (accidentalcourtesy.com.) Musician Daryl Davis has played all over the world with legends like Chuck Berry and Little Richard. In his off hours, Daryl likes to meet and befriend members of the Ku Klux Klan– something few black men can say. Join us at Open Forum for a Q&A time with our preacher for the day who has brought peace into the world one relationship at a time. (Watch his award-winning documentary on Netflix: Accidental Courtesy.) February 18 -- Blessed Are the Peacemakers. On March 1, 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed an executive order establishing the Peace Corps…a new opportunity for Americans to serve their country and the world. Since that day, more than 220,000 Americans have participated in its mission to promote world peace and friendship by immersing themselves in a community abroad and working side by side with local leaders to tackle the most pressing challenges of our generation. As a young adult, CCPC member Stephanie Rust, served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia. Since then she has lived and worked in over 20 countries around the world in the areas of democracy, education, environment, and governance, and currently serves as Director of Overseas Programming and Training Support at the Peace Corps. Open Forum welcomes Stephanie as she shares her journey and offers an update on the Peace Corps today.

In ancient Israel ashes were understood to be a forceful reminder of the pervasiveness of human sin and of the inevitability of death. Ashes represented that which was burned out and wasted…that which once was, but is no more. This traditional emblem of grief and mourning has been adopted by the Christian church as a signal of our own sinful mortality, as well as to remind us of the dark days in Jesus’ life in his passion and death. During the days of Lent which follow, we think about who we are and who Jesus Christ is…for us…and the journey begins. This year, we invite you to begin your contemplative Lenten journey with worship. We will gather for a simple service of scripture/reflection, singing, ashes and communion at 7:30 a.m. (for early morning risers or those on the way to work), 9:15 a.m. (for those dropping off at Nursery School and others), and 7:30 p.m. (for those who wish to conclude their day with more formal worship including special music by the Chancel Choir) in the sanctuary. Please join us for this sacred time.

What does the Christian faith have to do with the often-abstract concept of peace? Come with us as we partake of Christ’s peace and bring it to fruition in our world. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” – John 14:27
