GREENSBORO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION - BUILDER UPDATE

Ron Foister 2017 GBA President

REFLECTING ON OUR HERITAGE… BUILDING ON OUR LEGACY… begin 2017, the Greensboro Builders Association celebrates 60 years A sofhaswegreat success! Throughout our six decades of existence, our organization become one of the most well respected associations in the North

Carolina Home Builders Association (NCHBA) while the effects of the great leadership from our association can be seen far beyond our state borders. I would like to personally thank our most recent past-president, Phil Warrick, for doing an exemplary job as the 2016 President. Phil will continue to grow our legacy as he serves as our NCHBA president in the year 2019. I am truly honored, and humbled, by the opportunity to serve as your President in such a benchmark year for our association. As an association, one of our primary goals is to provide value to you - our members. We encourage personal and professional growth through a host of strategic initiatives. The first area we seek to encourage growth in is Member Engagement. As an organization, we have some of the brightest and best professionals in the Triad area. I am continually amazed at some of the accomplishments that I hear coming from our membership. The Greensboro Builders Association has more than 650 members which represent thousands of people in our area. This equates to countless opportunities to be involved with programs such as our Young Professionals, Triad Sales and Marketing Council, or our Associates Council. Our Member Engagement initiative goes hand-inglove with our Membership Growth initiative. With so many opportunities to benefit both personally and professionally, why wouldn’t anyone in our industry want to be a part of such a great organization? Check out our website for more information on member benefits such as our NCHBA Rebate Program and NAHB Member Advantage discounts. Unfortunately, one of our initiatives involves a potential crisis looming on the horizon of our industry. Each day, we as Builders and Associates struggle to fill our ranks with good, quality employees who have developed the skills necessary to provide our homeowners with safe, high quality, and affordable housing. Workforce Development is one of our key initiatives in 2017. We are forging alliances with our local high schools and technical colleges to open doors of opportunity for young people who are interested in our trade programs. Through this initiative we hope to not only place young people in our industry, but also individuals looking to start a second career, as well as our military veterans. If you would like to serve on our Workforce task force, let me know. As concerned as many of us are over our potential labor issues, it is with great excitement and anticipation that we celebrate what appears to be a vibrant return to our construction economy in the Triad area. Our final initiative for 2017 will be to bolster our Marketing and Public Relations presence in the Triad which will largely be accomplished through the build-up and celebration of our 60th Anniversary in September and into next year with the celebration of our 60th Parade of Homes. It is imperative that we broaden our reach and our brand awareness in our community in areas such as philanthropy and political advocacy. Again, it is an honor to serve as your 2017 President. I look forward to meeting you and working with you as we continue to build on our outstanding legacy in the Triad area!

Celebrating 60 Years A

lmost sixty years ago, a group of Greensboro homebuilders saw the reputation of their trade being tarnished by unqualified, untrained, and often unscrupulous builders looking to make a quick buck in the burgeoning 1950s housing boom. To protect homebuyers from shoddy construction and shady contractors, the group decided to form a trade association which would set standards for reputable, professional builders. The result was the Home Builders Association of Greensboro, which was chartered by the National Association of Home Builders on September 16, 1957. Sixty years later, our organization now known as the Greensboro Builders Association (GBA) is still focused on many of the same things...serving consumers in new and remodeled residential and commercial construction. We will be observing and celebrating our 60th anniversary at association events throughout the year…culminating with our 60th Parade of Homes in the spring of 2018. Another milestone celebration this year is the 20th anniversary of our Tour of Remodeled Homes.

Share Your Memories With Us

When did you get involved with the Builders Association and why? What are your favorite memories as a GBA member? How has the Association impacted your business? So often we hear about the friendships established, even with staunch competitors, as members have worked together on committees to building a Habitat home, all of which has led to long lasting relationships. Share photos and memories with us at info@greensborobuilders.org. We also encourage you to join in the celebrations throughout the year as we reach another milestone for our Association…providing 60 years of service to our members, industry and community.

2016 Year-In-Review we reflect on this past year, we continued to see growth A swithin our industry and Association. New initiatives were launched which will continue to be a priority for 2017.

Below are a few highlights for 2016. Thanks to everyone for your involvement and participation. Workforce Development Recognizing the growing need for labor resources, GBA members have been meeting with other community and industry organizations to explore ways to increase workforce development initiatives, including apprenticeship programs. This will continue to be a priority for 2017. Young Professionals Group From after-hours networking socials to sponsoring teams in a Kick-Ball tournament, our young professionals group continues to provide opportunities to engage younger industry members.

Advocacy Through our local, state and national government affairs partners (TREBIC, NCHBA & NAHB) we continue to advocate for regulatory reforms that impact the building industry. NCHBA had one of its most successful legislative sessions resulting in numerous benefits and savings for our members, including changes to the sales tax law for new construction and renovations. TREBIC hosted its inaugural “Stop Work Order” Regulatory Staff Appreciation along with the 17th annual Pig Poultry & Politics event. NC Build PAC We exceeded our annual goal by 170%, raising more than $10,000 with 47 participating contributors. This will allow our Association to better support local and state candidates that understand and support the building and real estate industry.

Networking & Marketing We experienced growth in member participation in membership meetings, including our annual meeting featuring Governor Pat McCrory and our Spring Parade Celebration featuring the Band of Oz. Our spring and fall Skeet Tournaments had our largest participation to date with more than 75 participants. Our golf tournaments also saw growth in participants and sponsors, both the spring at Bryan Park and the fall at Grandover Resort. We partnered with the Winston-Salem HBA to provide two regional networking events. We launched our new GBA website to provide a mobile responsive site for members and consumers.

ReBuilding Hope…Giving Back to the Community Working with Community Housing Solutions, GBA members constructed a new home in the Ole Asheboro neighborhood. Through our $10,000 Reverse Raffle…we were able to provide $5000 contributions to Community Housing Solutions as well as Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat.

Education GBA Remodelers, Builders, Sales & Marketing, Aging-in-Place, and Green Building councils provided a variety of educational programs for all GBA members including NAHB designation classes. We continued to offer the Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) courses quarterly.

Consumer Home Tours With our Parade of Homes and Tour of Remodeled Homes, along with the Southern Ideal Home Show, we continue to provide consumers quarterly opportunities to meet industry members showcasing the latest in new construction, professional remodeling and industry products and services.
