ationally, the demand at food banks is at an all-time high. Sadly, Greensboro and Guilford County have been designated as one of the hungriest places in the country. Food insecurity, defined as the condition of not having regular access to enough nutritious food for a healthy life, affects 18.3% of people in North Carolina and 19.2% of people in Guilford County. Almost 30% of children in Guilford County are food insecure. Of Guilford County Schools’ 73,000 students, 67% (as of 2015) receive free or reduced price lunches and breakfasts. That is more than 49,000 children possibly needing food assistance. Is there a way the citizens of Greensboro & Guilford County can become the key source of food for its neediest? We think so and want to encourage you to join us in supporting A Simple Gesture Greensboro. A Simple Gesture Greensboro is a food collection program that supports the food banks and food pantries in Greensboro and Guilford County…especially those that are assisting the children in our community. A Simple Gesture does not store or distribute any food, but takes it directly to the food banks and pantries on the days that the food is collected.
Your simple gesture is to sign up to be a food donor. Donors are provided a reusable grocery bag to keep in their pantry and commit to buy one additional, nonperishable item every week when shopping, and place in the bag. A Simple Gesture volunteers will come to your home every other month on the date specified on the tag on your green bag - collect your bag of food - and leave another reusable grocery bag for you to use during the next two months. The collected food is delivered that same day to several food banks for distribution to the needy. It’s that simple! Ways to Get Involved Food Donor Sign up to be Food Donor, providing a bag of food every two months that will be collected directly from your home – pick up an enrollment card at the Parade or sign up online at www.asimplegesturegso.org Corporate Donor Businesses can sign up – providing employees with grocery bags to fill and bring back to the office on designated collection days every other month – as well as provide financial donations to support the growth of this initiative Volunteer Volunteers are needed to pick up food from donor locations as well as receive food at food banks on designated collection days – as well as promote and coordinate donor enrollment

Helping our Food Banks & Pantries Guilford County’s food banks and pantries simply do not have the food needed to meet the demand that is placed upon them. A Simple Gesture has selected three initial food pantry partners due to their waiting lists for hungry families, and their ability to quickly distribute food to those families. Let’s Work Together to Make A Difference Although food drives and food initiatives are great projects, A Simple Gesture wants to reach out to those citizens in our town who want to make feeding the hungriest an ongoing work of service. This was not only a tremendous milestone for the Greensboro Builders Association…but for Habitat Greensboro as the 50 homes constructed through our partnership represent 25% of the homes Habitat constructed during that ten year period!
Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat brings builders, remodelers, suppliers and trade contractors together to work side by side

he Greensboro Builders Association and Habitat for
Humanity of Greater Greensboro are teaming up the 2-6 to construct 5 houses in one week of November week at Quail Oaks West.
to build houses from foundation to dedication in one incredible week. Twenty builders have volunteered to work in teams to construct the houses which will be built to both Energy Star and the National Green Building Standard certifications. Hundreds of trade contractors and suppliers will donate their time, expertise and materials.
We had our inaugural one-week building blitz in 2003 in which we constructed 12 homes in ONE week. To date, members of the Greensboro Builders Association through our Raising Roofs…Builders for Habitat initiative have constructed 50 NEW homes for families along with 3 home renovations.
When we embarked on this initiative, our goal was to create a sustainable community service project and partnership. We decided to conduct builds every other year…which we have been able to do…even during the worst recession in our history. Our build in the fall of 2013 was a milestone as we were able to construct 7 homes bringing our total to 50 homes in our 10 year partnership.
Habitat homes are simple, decent and affordable houses sold to hardworking families at no-profit and with interestfree financing. In addition to a modest down payment, families contribute 300 hours of “sweat equity” toward the purchase of their home. For Raising Roofs homes, families are volunteering on other construction projects to achieve their required hours.

5 Houses...5 Days Numerous companies provide financial support to address logistical and hospitality needs. All crews working on the construction of these homes are provided meals on site. This allows for greater productivity…as well as a time for fellowship between our trade contractors, suppliers and builders. On Friday, everyone is invited to join in our Dedication Ceremony which includes recognition of our newest homeowner families along with the builder teams that constructed their homes.
Day 1 starts on Monday at 6 am - before the sun comes up - the first walls go up!
Days 2 & 3 the houses are getting dried in…with roofing, siding, insulation, drywall and interior rough-ins being completed.
We are gearing up for another GREAT week with five building teams in place and planning underway. Tiny Houses…
A Growing Trend
S
mall. Compact. Open. Airy. These are not things that normally would seem to go together but they certainly do inside the “Asheville” model Tiny House that will be featured on this year’s Fall Parade of Homes. Tiny Houses are gaining in popularity and have a huge following. From their humble beginnings by eco-friendly DIY’ers in the Pacific Northwest to their ever increasing status as media-darlings on HGTV shows like “Tiny House Hunters”, Tiny Houses seem to be here to stay as a viable alternative for some to conventional housing. Dwellings are typically considered Tiny Houses if they are 400 square feet or less. There are two main types of Tiny Houses being built today – homes that are built on permanent foundations, and homes that are mobile and built on wheels. Tiny Houses that are built on foundations are regulated differently than Tiny Houses that are built on wheels. Homes with permanent foundations must comply with local zoning laws and meet a minimum square footage for living space. Building permits must be obtained and inspections must be performed. Tiny Houses built on wheels are typically constructed on utility trailer frames and do not fall under normal zoning regulations since they are considered to be an RV – even if they are parked once and never move again. Because of this flexibility many Tiny House aficionados prefer to construct their tiny dream homes on wheels.

A Tiny House on wheels can be constructed far below the minimum number of square feet that is typically required for a new dwelling. It is completely self-contained and can be moved from location to location very easily. The Department of Transportation requires that a Tiny House on wheels be no more than 8’6” wide and 13’6” tall. If a Tiny House exceeds these dimensions, special permits must be obtained in order to transport the dwelling over public roadways.
