What inspired you to start your own business? Why interior design? Over the last 15 years I have worked in many different areas within the construction industry. For the past decade, I’ve enjoyed working for JacksonBuilt Custom Homes as their Director of Design. Starting my own design firm has always been a dream of mine, so I finally took a leap of faith and founded Casper Design.

What services do you offer clients? My focus over the years has been spent on custom home building and design, but I can take on projects of any size. I can help clients in any capacity up to and including interior and exterior selections, specializing in trim and cabinet design, and selecting home furnishings, wallcoverings, and accessories.

Describe your design philosophy? Every project is unique and each client has their own style. This makes my

job anything but boring. I am hired to design my client’s home, not mine, so while I will always give my opinion and direction, I want it to best represent their life and style.

What’s the best piece of design advice you’ve been given? “Make communication a priority upfront.” Ask questions and make sure the client fully understands your vision

and is on board. We need to change our habit of making assumptions about our clients and be sure everything is communicated effectively.

What makes you stand out amongst other designers? I was recently told what differentiates me from other designers is that I “speak construction.” To me that means understanding how your selections will impact the entire scope of work, and being able to communicate your vision to the contractors and the clients. Becky Said: A first edition copy of The Dwellings Houses of Charleston autographed by the author, Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. The written details, drawings, and pictures included are overwhelming.

Best Antique You’ve Found?

Camille Said: An original 1865 letter from Eliza Armstrong Massey that she wrote to her mother about Sherman’s march through Blackville, SC. You can feel her emotion and how scared she was in her writing.

An antique tool; it was a wooden t-square. The Patina was lovely and it made a great architectural statement.

Most Unique Piece?

Handwritten sheet music from the 1870s. It’s very rare and so beautifully written.

Mid-century modern. I love the clean lines and pops of color!

Favorite Era of Décor?

Arts and crafts. The 1920s were a crazy time and the décor was so eye-catching!

Jewelry, both fine and costume. We have several dealers and they each bring a unique sense of style that covers different tastes and price points.

Top Selling Category of Antiques?

Sterling silver is a good investment and, when all polished, adds some zest to your home setting.

At Home With

The Hart Family of Carolina Lanterns & Lighting Kelly and Janna Hart recently took over the reigns at Carolina Lanterns & Lighting after moving here from Texas. Working with the former owner, they outfitted their Lowcountry abode with the perfect lighting. 1 When considering the ambiance of

their Charleston home, Janna wanted the space to feel coastal, airy, and bright. The family room is outfitted with accessories and furniture in pinks and blues that are often prevalent in a Lowcountry sunrise or sunset. A Fanimation fan was important to include in the space to help with airflow during the stifling heat in the late spring and summer months. The Regina Andrew accessories help add to the coastal atmosphere Janna was aiming for.

also full of that coastal charm Janna wanted. A simple white palette with pops of color keeps the space clean. Savoy House island pendants and sconces add interest to the kitchen and the Ro Sham Beaux chandelier in the dining room gives the space a glamorous touch.

Cabinetmakers Who Care Drew Taylor purchased Carpenters Restoration in 2013. He has grown a small furniture repair shop into a 6,000 square foot production facility, where his team builds custom cabinetry and heirloom quality furniture. Craftspeople

The company is comprised of well-rounded craftspeople. Drew’s approach to the business is to “hire attitude and train skill.” Everyone begins as an apprentice, and everyone must know how to build, spray and install cabinetry. “Chances are the guy who built your cabinets will be supervising the installation” says Taylor. Unlike outsourced cabinetry, CW’s craftspeople know exactly what the finished install will look like prior to it being delivered. “It’s a huge advantage, our people care about the finished product because they built it themselves.” .

Drew built his production shop and design studio because he saw a gap in the cabinetry market. “Kitchen cabinetry is a pain point for builders because there are four different parties involved” he says, “I wanted to own the entire process to make things easier for my clients.” Which is exactly what he did. Carpenters Woodworks now designs, builds, delivers and installs everything themselves. This keeps everything local to Charleston, and eliminates the need for subcontractors, shipping, and install crews. “By taking care of all four phases we allow our clients to concentrate on growing their businesses.”

Philosophy

“Our philosophy is win/win” says Taylor. “We can produce a better product, and provide a better experience, for the same price.” CW is trying to help people understand that true custom cabinetry is available to everyone: “There’s no reason to get your cabinets off a factory shelf somewhere” says Taylor, “We can design, build, deliver, and install a superior product because we don’t spend money on 70 • CH+D • Spring 2021

Keep Your Feet Cool

Building a deck in the Lowcountry can be a difficult task because of harsh sun, temperamental weather, and marshland. Decks and Docks provides a sturdy and unique decking option called Wear Deck. This decking is composed of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) with fiberglass, which makes it durable and very resistant to the salt and sun we all love. The material is heat reflective and comes in specialized “barefoot colors” to keep your feet cool on the hottest of Charleston days. Wear Deck is also approved for ground contact and underwater installation, as well as contact with salt and freshwater, making it easy for you to plan your deck construction in the lowcountry environment. There are a variety of types of paint out there for different surfaces in your home. We’ve talked to the pros to get their two cents on these options and where they work best.

Latex vs. Oil Base Paints

Latex

Paint that is latex based is generally easy to use because it dries quickly. It works well on walls and ceilings and can be cleaned with just soap and water.

Oil

Although it has a longer dry time between coats, oil based paint tends to be more durable. It’s also moisture resistant, which is perfect for the Lowcountry climate. It's interesting to note that some states do not allow the sale of oil based paint. South Carolina does.

Primer vs. All-In-One

Primer

Before painting, priming the walls can help block stains, prevent peeling, and attain deeper color in fewer paint coats. Primers come in a wide range specific to the surface that is being primed in order to assure the best adhesion for the paint.

Some companies offer all-inone or paint/primer products. These work best when repainting a wall that has a similar color and finish that just need a quick refresh.

Where did your passion for home and design come from? Ever since I was a kid I had an interest in architecture—skyscrapers, hotels, and homes. I actually had a mini drafting table in my bedroom and went on to spend some time as an architecture major in college. Ultimately I ended up as a home builder. I really enjoy my role because plans on paper are fun, but I also get to help execute the bigger picture.

What is your favorite part of this project? There are so many great parts of this particular project, but if I had to choose just one it would be the combination of the front staircase to the front door and foyer. The exposed steel stringer staircase in the front of the house is really phenomenal. The cables make a seamless transition into the five foot steel pivot door, which leads into an all glass foyer. This room has two 15 x 9 foot glass panels in the front and back creating an almost see through effect. It makes a big statement when you come into the home and highlights the gorgeous Lowcountry land surrounding it.

What advice would you give homeowners looking for a builder? The number one thing I would say is to make sure you find a good fit. You’re going to spend somewhere between nine months to two years with a builder and you want to make sure that person is someone you feel comfortable with. Cost is certainly important, but having a builder that will truly guide you through the process is key when making your decision.

How would you describe your work? We will build anything—there’s no one particular style that we stick to. The goal of Curtis Daniel Homes is “surpassing the ordinary.” That is what we try to do in every facet of interaction with customers from communication to quality to responsiveness. What is your favorite part about being an architect? My great grandmother recognized my gift of creativity, so she paid for early childhood art lessons. Over the years, and into college, these foundational art lessons blossomed into my love of architecture and art today. Being an architect enables me to use my gift of creativity everyday and I love the profession more and more each day. My favorite part about being an architect is the fulfillment that comes when I drive around and stare at our “artwork” within the community. Architects shape our communities and it's an honor to be part of that.

What is the greatest piece of advice another architect has given you? Have great work ethic. I was thrown into the fire working for famed architect Helmut Jahn. Working with him was like a daily architecture marathon. This way of working kept me sharp, and I still practice this was by getting up early and putting in at least three house of design time before most people even start their day.

How do you overcome challenges that arise during a project? I try to meet all challenges by being a focused problem solver. The start of each architectural assignment comes with a problem that needs to be solved. Architects have a great responsibility because our work is permanent and it has great impact on the influence of our community. One of the biggest challenges as architects is that we have to think long term, as well as physically and socially in our work. We overcome many of these challenges by relying on our training and expertise to create spaces that will be enjoyed by the community for many years to come. What inspired you to become an interior designer? Growing up in a family of builders and designers, I was just always exposed to it. After realizing the corporate world was not a fit for me, it was a natural progression to follow my heart.

How have your designs evolved over the years? Once I learned to trust my initial thoughts, my designs became much more personal and interesting.

Who is one person in the industry you admire and why? I have a huge appreciation for Ariene Bethea of Dressing Room Interiors. Her use of pattern, color, and pizazz is uber inspiring and refreshing; and it makes me happy! Who doesn’t want to be super happy when they walk into a space?

What makes this particular space so unique? First would be the wallpaper on the ceiling: it’s dramatic to say the least. The use of color in this space is also unique in that we went dark on the trim. This adds an extra layer of drama and a push to move your eyes right up to the ceiling. It’s a real treat to get that bold and forward-thinking client to make this kind of commitment—it makes it all worth it.

What advice did you give these homeowners when they approached you about this room? When entering any job that entails construction, whether it be small or large, I can’t stress enough the importance of having patience. From lining up the contractor, to waiting for them to start, to the invasiveness of the work: you need a tremendous amount of patience to see it through. Along with patience, I remind my clients that something will likely go astray but it will all work out in the end, it always does. Taking a Look at Natural Stone Surfaces

Investing in durable, easy maintenance countertops will be worth it when remodeling or building your dream home. Make sure to do your research before making a decision to ensure you are choosing a surface that is best for you and your family.

Natural Stone

Natural stone surfaces include granite, marble, limestone, soapstone, slate, onyx, quartzite, travertine, and more. These surfaces are found from quarries where they are extracted and turned into countertops, fireplace surrounds, and other unique accents throughout your home.

Granite

Granite is a choice many homeowners use in high traffic areas such as kitchens and bathrooms because of its durability. This surface is scratch resistant and as such, will withstand daily wear and tear. Granite, like all other natural stones, is porous so it does need to be sealed regularly. Granite is harder than marble so it does offer a bit more durability.

Marble

Marble is a popular choice for bathrooms. The colors in a marble surface will also stay the same for years to come as it is UV-resistant. The surface is softer than Granite

or Quartzite, so it is more susceptible to scratching, staining, and etching. To help maintain the same vibrancy from the day it was installed, simply seal it at least once a year.

Quartz

Quartz is made from natural stone mixed with resins and pigments. Because of this, it is virtually maintenance free. Like Marble, it comes in a variety of colors. And it is harder than Granite so it does offer a bit more durability. Quartz is non porous so it’s easier to keep relatively bacteria-free.

While natural stone is uniquely stunning, some are porous, meaning it has minute holes in it that liquid can get through, so it needs to be sealed on a regular basis and spills need to be wiped up immediately. The garage is multifunctional. There is a workshop, storage for Robert’s tools and motorcycle, wall storage, and space to park the cars. The tandem extension allows the space to serve these various functions.

The Problem:

The Allens downsized when they moved into their current home. That downsize meant cutting down on storage space for holiday decorations, sports equipment, tools, and other essentials for their family.

The Cool Crew Follow along as we chat with AirMax Heating & Air about what their day to day looks like—from new customer visits to making sure products are in stock. The Airmax Team from feft to right: Stephen, Josephine, Rudy, and Medd.

Medd, Rudy, and Stephen, the team at Airmax, starts the day by meeting with sales coordinator Josephine. She has already taken phone calls with homeowners and she has assessed their needs and possible issues. Then the team reaches out to schedule on site visits .

Stephen goes to a new client’s home for a site visit. At the site, he speaks with the homeowner about what they are looking for and how the company can best provide options for their airflow needs. He inspects the current system with the client in order to help them visualize what is not working about their old setup and what can work better in the future.

When Stephen returns to the office he makes sure that all the products his new client needs are in stock. Then he schedules an installation date and always makes sure to accompany the installation team so that his clients can see a familiar face throughout the entire life of the project. “I’m involved in every step because I want to make our clients feel confident,” Stephen says.

10:30am Mid-morning, AirMax receives a delivery of units, which Rudy helps unload with the forklift. These boxes can be up to 600 pounds, so after some careful driving, the guys arrange the products in the warehouse.

12:30pm After Stephen completes the site visit he gives the homeowner an estimate in a variety of price ranges and explains which solution he would recommend for them. This could mean a larger investment for people who are building their forever home, or a smaller repair for someone who is managing a short-term rental.

There are a variety of tones that light projects. That are measured by Correlated Color Temperature, which is measured in Kelvin. Warm white is up to 3000K, cool whites are 3500K to 4900K, and daylight is 5000K or more. A warmer white will make a space feel more intimate, whereas cooler whites make the room feel more spacious. Light sources are measured with a Color Rendering Index and it is recommended to use sources with a CRI greater than 90 so wood finishes, stone tops, and colors look their best.

hen Kara and Neal Crowell of Cinder Creek Construction began work on this Kiawah Island dwelling, the goal was to create a space that catered to how the homeowners lived and their love of nature. That started with the exterior of this custom home. The home was inspired by the mid century modernist movement and uses a lot of natural materials. Every decision Cinder Creek and Architecture Plus made when designing this home was very intentional. “We cleared the bare minimum. The landscape architecture is 100 percent native species to South Carolina to encourage nesting for the species on Kiawah Island,” Kara says. The home is anchored with a central core that is continued to the center of the home, and flanking out from that center are different elements that make the home stand out. Clad in garapa siding, the home will naturally weather, again speaking to the importance of building green and honoring the natural beauty of the maritime forest. Fixed window walls are on the front and rear of the home; they are custom made by 102 • CH+D • Spring 2021

Andersen Windows. Another exterior feature that you’ll notice is the lack of HVAC or equipment stand. This particular home has a dedicated mechanical room and then hidden HVAC systems are on the roof; a high efficiency system that functions remarkably well for the homeowners. The approximately 3,300 square foot homes run an energy bill of about $230 per month. This modern nature retreat is also a smart house. Everything is low voltage and all of the lighting systems are high efficiency. When you enter a room, the lights come on automatically and then they time out so you don’t have a lot of unnecessary energy usage. Humidity is a huge issue in the Lowcountry, especially in bathrooms. “It’s pretty common that people don’t run the fans enough,” Kara adds. “In this system, when the humidity reaches a certain level in the bathrooms, the fans automatically come on and will stay on until the humidity level has dropped.” This helps with mold and mildew as well. It was important for the homeowners to not waste square footage so each space

was carefully planned out, and design decisions were very intentional. A small foyer was one of those intentional choices the homeowners made. “The homeowners wanted a bit of a moodier feel when you walk into the home and then you enter the living area and the massing in spaces opens back up and takes you visually back outside,” Kara adds. Well into construction, they read an article that said this concept was very common in Frank Lloyd Wright homes. The main living area of the house has the same central core, except the core is anchored by walls of walnut that wrap around. Hidden doors for the laundry room and a future elevator are in this central core. The anchor for the smart home is also hidden in this central 104 • CH+D • Spring 2021

core. 10 foot walnut cabinets speak more to the modernity of the home, as does the open floor plan to the living room. The old school, American modern influence is seen in the living room. The colors were chosen to go along with nature and the furnishings were selected from Iola Modern in North Charleston. The television is a frame TV above the contemporary fireplace, with special venting so the heat doesn’t damage the technology. Accordion doors open to the patio off the living room. The system is easy to open and helps bring the outdoors in, again one of the main goals for the homeowners. Some other unique features of the home include flooring and a special baseboard

element. The hardwood floors throughout the home are in varying shades and arranged intentionally to show the natural variations. Minimalist or frameless doors were used throughout the home so the door just blends in to the wall and your eye just floats right past it. The baseboard is recessed into the drywall and there is a reglet detail that runs along it. Swimming into Spring One Summerville couple used their own business to bring their pool expectations to reality for their family to enjoy for years to come.

acyelly and Thiago Silva, owners of Aquatica Pools & Spas, started their custom gunite pool business because they wanted to provide a place where people could make their backyard vision come true. They pour attention into every detail from pool shape to tile selection. Thiago says, “a custom swimming pool is a large investment, so we want to bring the most value to the table.” The company takes pride in creating an extremely personal approach to the design and sales process. “We are providing the highest quality trades and materials, and ultimately our goal is getting our clients swimming as fast as possible.” Over the past few months Jacyelly and Thiago have built their own dream pool, which has been a particularly ex106 • CH+D • Spring 2021

citing journey for the couple. Since they were using their own company, Thiago kept the systems the same as they always do. “We have worked very hard to create a good construction system that consistently yields good results, which is comforting because I knew I could trust our process,” he notes. Building a pool while the home is still under construction, like the Silvas did, can make the timeline a bit unusual, but typically the full process, from dig to fill, takes about six to eight weeks. Jacyelly and Thiago both had a clear vision for their design because they’ve seen so many unique pool designs over the years. “An automatic cover was a must, for safety first of all, but also to allow us to keep the property more open and not have a fence too close,” Thiago explains. They also wanted to

highlight the relaxing quality of the sound of water, so they included a large infinity edge and laminar jets. When it comes to maintenance, pools require weekly brushing, cleaning, and vacuuming to make sure the water chemistry is correct. Chemical technology has come a long way. “This pool has a fully automated chemical feed system, which constantly monitors its own chemistry, and consistently adds tiny amounts of chemicals,” Thiago says. This keeps the water chemistry consistent and they can avoid the scheduling and hassle of having someone manually dump in large amounts of chemicals in the pool once a week. This project means a lot for the Silvas. “We wanted a place where our family and friends can come and have fun, but also a place that added to the atmosphere and design of our entire property,” Jacyelly says. Not only does

this pool create a way to bond with one another, but it creates a mood of relaxation. “We are extremely blessed,” Thiago expresses. “We have the privilege of building spaces that bring people together to create new memories.” For homeowners designing their own pools Thiago recommends they do their research and hire a reputable, licensed builder. Beach Build Tackling a beachfront build can be complicated, so these homeowners worked with the pros to bring their vision to life.

iament Building was established in 2005. Evan Diament, owner of Diament Building, is a second generation home builder with a bachelors in construction managment. Over the years Evan has developed ongoing working relationships with interior designers, architects, engineers, vendors, and other building officials. “We can’t do it without our subcontractor team who we consider our family,” Evan notes. One of those architects who Evan knew from past projects introduced him to these homeowners. “The project involved demolishing an

older home and building a new custom home in its place,” he explains. Getting a builder involved as early as possible is the best route to take, which is what these homeowners did. By getting Evan involved during the design stage, he was able to help develop the plans that met the client’s budget. Prior to the completion of the architectural plans, Evan met with the architect and homeowner. Together they hashed out ideas and then provided the homeowners with a conceptual budget before the plans were sent to the engineer for the permit.

Unmatched Construction A pivot door and beams are just two of the incredible elements of this sitting room. Shades of blue are seen throughout the home on doors, benches, in artwork, and other elements. Surfboards are also a common theme throughout this Sullivan’s Island abode.

PROJECT FILES Building on the beach presented its own set of considerations when designing the home. “There are many nuances to be understood,” Evan says. “Lot coverage calculations, stormwater requirements, flood zones, impervious surface requirements, and non-conforming lots just to name a few.” In addition, historic homes on Sullivan’s Island have other requirements for beach construction other areas in Charleston don’t have. Pre-planning is the most important part of starting a project off on the right foot and that is no different for beachfront homes. Evan recalls that the lot itself was one of the biggest challenges of this project. This Sullivan’s Island home is non-conforming so it has smaller than normal setbacks. “We were challenged with landscape on the left side which required us to crane in palm trees over the house,” Evans states. “We also had to tightly coordinate pool construction and other exterior trades due to the limited exterior areas to work.” The other major challenge came from building the home during the pandemic but the team did so in a safe, clean working environment and while they had to adjust some permitting and inspection procedures, and deal with a short supply of materials, they were still able to build the home on schedule. By gathering a team that worked well together, the home was complete with some unique spaces

and really cool custom features. Zero entry curbless showers, hidden hallway doors, statement wallpaper, and exposed beams were just some of those elements. Beachfront Vacation Home A Folly Beach rental property was designed with family living in mind, both for the people who would rent the property and for the homeowner.

ustainability, resiliency, quality, advocacy, and innovation are at the top of the list for any project David Hill and his team at Innova Architecture work on. People say these things are important for not only current generations, but also future generations to preserve our natural resources, improve our air quality, and to maximize the use of space in our infrastructure. David believes all of this to be true and he feels good about doing some good in addition to providing good architecture and good design. “We have a responsibility as designers and architects to do better,” David says. “So much of green design and sustainability is just making good choices about the materials you use, how you put them together, and how you design the building itself.”

This particular project is a rental property on Folly Beach, but it will be used part time by the owner as well. So David had to come up with a plan and design that was not only beneficial for renters, but also for the homeowner and his family when they used the house. Some of the eco-friendly products that David used in this home were a geothermal system for an efficient way to heat and cool the three-story home when renters were there, and structural insulated panels which are a high-performance panel that incorporates framing and structure and insulation all in one so the house is stronger and better insulated. A beach home requires some special consideration when determining what products will be used to construct it.

Dual Purposes Since the home serves as both a rental property and vacation home for the owner, durability and functionality were of top priority. A strong exterior to withstand being on the beach, along with longlasting interior finishes make this home sturdy. An open floor plan and plenty of bedrooms welcome renters to enjoy a family vacation.

This home was built on pilings that are drilled into the ground, which David adds is the only way to effectively support the house. Structurally, you also have to consider the exposure to the sun, the beach wind, the moisture, and flood surge with hurricanes. David says there aren’t only structural considerations when building a beach home but also design considerations as these homes are often rented for family vacations. Beach houses are rented for the views so this home offers water views from every last room in the house, except for the laundry room. “The goal was to really have people immersed in the beachfront living experience,” recalls David. There is also a billiards room and tiki bar for added enjoyment. Extra storage and home automation were a few things that were added to this hybrid home so the owners and renters could both enjoy the space. Added storage is used to hide items that the owners need each time they visit, and the home automation is helpful for the owner to be able to control everything if renters have issues. Shiplap was also something that was added to not only appeal to the owner’s style, but also to be durable and hold up against suitcases that might get bumped against it as renters are coming and going. There are also four master suites, one of which is handicap accessible, and a bunk room for the kids so there is plenty of space for the homeowners and renters to spread out during their stay and everyone can have their space. David describes himself as a “professional opinion haver”. He works on a project and offers his opinion for what would work best for each project. A Stunning Home for Two This custom home builder created a stunning dwelling full of elegant touches and unique features.

his custom built Daniel Island home was the perfect creative project for homeowners Patrick and Christine Terwilliger. This husband and wife team both came from design and construction backgrounds, so they knew they wanted a builder who had roots and experience in the Lowcountry community. When touring the Daniel Island, area the couple spotted a recently finished JacksonBuilt Custom Homes project. “We toured the home and were very impressed with the quality of the work, the finishes, and the attention to detail,” Pat says. “We tracked down Richard Jackson, owner of JacksonBuilt Custom Homes, and had several long phone calls with him digging into details of his firm and how he operates.” Since the homeowners already had 116 • CH+D • Spring 2021

experience building custom homes in Virginia and Southern California, they knew finding a builder who they had a solid rapport with was essential. After meeting with Richard they knew it was a great fit and they went on to connect with Phil Clarke, of Clarke Design Group, who worked closely with Richard in the past. An important element that the homeowners included was a separate finished space over the garage, which they intend to use as a multi-purpose studio. “This space is really valuable because it is not only architecturally appealing, but it gives the homeowners or their guests a private suite away from the main home,” Richard explains. When it came to the style of the home, the homeowners wanted a home that

fit in with traditional Charleston architecture, but with a slight modern softness. “For the interior, we wanted to continue the transitional approach with an open floor plan and clean lines, without going so far as ‘full on contemporary’,” Pat mentions. For materials, they chose a low maintenance standing seam roof and artisan siding with mitered corners to create a unique, but traditional look. The transitions between exterior and interior space were also a focus. “To execute this vision we decided to do a raised slab home, instead of elevated, to avoid railings along the front of the home, which created that seamless connection between the outdoor space,” Richard says. The couple also

mentioned a pool was also part of the plan, so it was vital to keep that accessible feeling between the two. Designer Allison Casper collaborated with the homeowners to make sure the build details and design details tied together. “The home has a soft contemporary style with clean lines, well executed interior finishes, and a touch of warmth which helps it feel so inviting,” she said. “We were intentional in our selections to execute this cohesive look throughout the home. Elements like the plastered fireplace and hood, large format etched tile, and boxed sheetrock ceilings create texture for this stunning light canvas.”

Overall the attention to detail in this home is impeccable. “We seem to thrive on the creative side of designing and building from scratch, so we are especially thrilled with the unique finish and trim details, many of which were led by Richard and his team,” Pat says. s spring unfolds people in the Lowcountry dust off their golf carts for school pickups, cruising around the beach, and sunset rides along the Battery. But this year the eNVy Neighborhood Vehicle is taking Charleston by storm. The eNVy is a crossover vehicle, a mix between a utility terrain vehicle and a golf cart, making it durable, safe, and comfortable. At J.I. A Band of Brothers Brother building duo Greg and Jeff St. Pierre of St. Pierre Construction surpassed these homeowner’s expectations with a high quality custom home.

he St. Pierre brothers are Charleston boys through and through. Growing up in the Lowcountry, a passion for excellent customer service, and an understanding of the business led the brothers to venture out on their own with St. Pierre Construction nearly twenty years ago. What began as framing, siding, and trim projects for other builders eventually led to them contracting their own projects on a full-time basis.

For this particular project, Greg and Jeff were brought on by the architect Rachel Burton of Swallowtail Architec-

ture, and interior designer Amy Trowman of Amy Trowman Design. Luckily, the homeowner got the team together early on in the process, which Greg says is always best. When the homeowner decided to work with St. Pierre Construction, they did so because they knew they were getting a team with hands-on experience and a team who were on the job site regularly making sure everything was going smoothly. Working closely with Rachel, Amy, and the homeowner allowed the St. Pierre brothers to build a home that fits not only the owner’s needs, but also their style. Decorative

trusses for the kitchen and screen porch ceiling, and a custom outdoor kitchen are just a few of those elements that were incorporated into the family’s new home. The uniqueness of this home was achieved with joint efforts from the entire team. As can be expected when approaching any home project, there were some challenges— structural steel proving to be the main concern. Though the team prepared for this element in the blueprints, when it came down to it, they had to figure it out onsite and used the blueprint as a guide; and that method worked.

Custom Stain for a Coastal Home Deck and dock pros created a custom stain for these homeowners, who were looking to protect their porches and dock from the Lowcountry heat and moisture.

arolina Stain & Seal specializes in staining and sealing exterior surfaces — specifically wood. John Shelton, David Garner, and their team worked with this Lowcountry couple on protecting their porches and dock.

The homeowners had contacted Carolina Stain & Seal about getting the porches sealed for aesthetic and protection purposes. Pressure treated pine was used on the porches which is very common in the Lowcountry, as it is durable and treated for the elements, however, if not properly protected it will deteriorate quickly. The homeowners and John discussed the importance of protecting and sealing their dock and porches with the color she wanted. Initially, medium to darker browns

were considered but the team quickly realized that wasn’t the right direction after seeing samples at the home. Once that color was nixed, it was time to begin the hunt for the perfect shade. They ordered a pigment and mixed it in with the marine sealer to give it a coastal grey color and the greys were perfect. Before they began actually sealing the surfaces with that custom color, the wood needed to be prepped. This included removing the mill glaze that prevented water from getting through the board; if water can’t penetrate, stain won’t either. So, in order to remove that, the team had to use an oxalic acid. Different cleaners are also used to strip the wood, and if needed, sanding is completed as well. The stain they used has a sealer that uses nanopoly

technology. In order to properly use this technology, a wet on wet application is used; meaning the first coat goes down to penetrate the wood and while that is still wet a flood coat goes down so you have two layers that go below the surface and they create a barrier against water and UV rays. There were some weather delays with this project but, even with all of that rain, the team was able to get the project done in a matter of weeks. Carolina Stain & Seal offers a maintenance plan for their customers as well. Three years from now, these homeowners will be contacted and a maintenance plan will be set up. They’ll evaluate the surfaces and create a plan for redoing the color, or come up with a new color if the owners want to change it. They do that every few years to make adjustments as needed. It’s important to keep in mind, these outside surfaces require extra attention and maintenance due to the environment we live in. Eclectic Dream House This Awendaw couple built their custom home from the bottom up to fit their unique style and selected surfaces that would withstand heavy activity.

ulie Clark of Palmetto Surfacing and her husband John embarked on a custom home building journey nearly five years ago, building the house almost entirely by themselves. With the help of friends and family, and Julie’s work family at Palmetto Surfacing, the home is finally complete and showcases an eclectic collection of pieces that fit the couple’s style perfectly. After selling their home in Charleston National, the Clarks were on the hunt for a property that was away from some of the hustle and bustle of a booming area. In 2015 they were riding around on the weekends and found this neighborhood in Awendaw. Something kept drawing them back. “The property is close to town, we like the country, and we have land,” John 128 • CH+D • Spring 2021

Weekend after weekend they returned to this property so they took that as a sign it was the right next step. “What’s so interesting is people ask us all the time how we came up with the design,” Julie recalls. Julie called a distant relative who was an architect and he connected her with an architect who splits his time between Johns Island and Arizona. The Clarks saw an exterior they liked in Houston and used that as inspiration for their architect. They met with him to come up with an exterior design Julie and John loved. When it came to the interior, Julie had some ideas, but the ability to take their time allowed her to select pieces that were really special to them. “We knew we wanted to do something really different,” Julie

says. “We don’t really have a style, it’s a mix of luxe interior elements.” It was important for the space to feel homey and to bring the outdoors in. They wanted a tranquil space to come home to after a long day and just relax. As Julie and John began selecting the surfaces they wanted to use throughout the home, they knew they needed durability and low-maintenance. The couple is in the kitchen very often — it’s their hub. “I wanted white so I went with a non porous Cambria quartz,” Julie notes. “This surface will not stain and will not scratch.” Julie also wanted a mitered edge so the island is extra thick for added drama. The powder room also has a thick, chunky top — a glacier white acrylic surface. This piece can be customized to any thickness and added the perfect statement piece for the unique bathroom. In the powder room is a Cambria quartz in ‘Skye’. “I wanted an extra fun element in this space,” Julie mentions. “We used a 2cm surface since it was a vertical application.” The master bathroom features a 2cm silestone, non porous quartz. There is also a heightened backsplash continued in the master. Julie’s and John’s home was a fun, long, and grueling process for them to complete. Custom Storage Creation A Lowcountry family enlisted the help of the organization pros at Closets by Design to create a custom package for a multi-functional space.

he homeowner Jesse worked with Designer Rebekah Dollar and Operations Manager Connor Burnam of Closets by Design for an initial walkthrough of his space. During this tour, Rebekah listened to how Jesse was using the space. She learned the space would not only need storage for Jesse’s computer, but also a spot to display sentimental items. Intentions for the space were discussed— would it be a work-from-home space, a multipurpose room for the family, or a hybrid of the two? Together

Connor came up with a solution that includes a combination of closed and open storage. Wide countertops allowed for plenty of space for office supplies and showcases Jesse’s vast collection of books. Various cabinets and drawers give Jesse some hidden storage options as well to hide things he doesn’t want out in the open. Because of the fully customized package, Jesse and his family were able to also customize the price of their organization system to fit their exact needs. They chose the upgrades that would function best for their family. This space ended up being a hybrid office

Mary Welch Fox Stasik is the face behind HGTV’s new show Breaking Bland. Known for her funky, eclectic, modern designs, the Tennessee native has settled down in Charleston with her rock star husband Ryan Stasik, the bassist for Umphrey’s McGee, and their two daughters.

ome design has always been something I’ve enjoyed reading about or watching on TV. I remember watching Property Brothers, Fixer Upper, Flip or Flop, House Hunters, and Love It or List It on a regular basis with my mom.

HGTV was constantly on in our house so I was thrilled to get the chance to sit down with the host of one of the newest shows, Breaking Bland. Interior designer Mary Welch Fox Stasik welcomed us into her Isle of Palms home shes spent the last few years renovating and making her own. The result is a unique beach house she will raise her children in. We chat with Mary Welch about what got her into design, how her show came about, and designing her own home.

The sizzle was picked up so they shot the pilot, and then went on to shoot a full season. Season one of Breaking Bland has seven episodes. The local families you’ll see on the show were selected via casting. Mary Welch and her friend, and co-host, builder John Frick of Level Building went to each of the homes with the homeowner’s budgets to determine what was actually feasible. When it comes to local girls, Melch can’t speak highly enough of her friends Cortney Bishop and Angie Hranowsky. “Cortney is family and not only does she have incredible style, but she’s also an incredible person,” Melch smiles. Mary Welch came across Angie’s home and messaged her on Instagram. She loved her style and her home so she asked if she could see the house. Angie said of course, Melch went over for dinner and the rest, as they say, is history. “This community is not only full of talent but also really great people who are willing to take you in and mentor you,” she notes.

This house brings Melch so much joy and that’s why she feels confident determining what inspires other people— she’s done it successfully in her own home. “When I look around it truly feels like our home, derived from our personalities.” Now that the home is complete, Melch recalls a story when they first moved in. Before they paid for anything she bought this neon sign that now hangs above their bed. “We got this” is their family motto. The remodel process took longer than they thought and there were so many obstacles they had to overcome. When they moved in, there were still things that were broken. Melch recalls feeling so defeated and she thought of the sign. “It’s going to make us feel better,” she thought. So they got the sign out of storage and Melch pulled it out to hang it up and it just shattered. She and Ryan both cried and said, “We don’t got this.” But, they got it fixed and now as the Melch loves creating unique artwork. Here she sits with just some of her many bold pieces.
