The season for change is among us. The term “change” means to make something different. Whether that change is personal, spiritual, physical, or even residential, now is the time to get started. Change can be scary; it can be intimidating. However, it can also be refreshing and thrilling. Inside our annual remodeling guide, you will find many design projects that transformed homes into beautiful works of art. Reflective of the word “change” is inspirational speaker, former pro baseball player, author, and our fall cover, Chris Singleton. Chris and his family invite us in to explore their newly renovated North Charleston home. We sit down with Chris as he discusses the many life changes he has experienced and his determination to spread his mission world-wide: love is stronger than hate.
Transitioning to the music scene, we get a sneak peek into Mark Bryan’s music studio. Renowned musician and lead guitarist of the global sensation Hootie and the Blowfish, Mark explains how his New England roots inspired his creative oasis.

Where did your passion for gardening come from?
I’m a southern belle who grew up in Charlotte, NC. My late mother was a self-taught gardener that always had vegetable and rose gardens to tend so it’s an inherited love of the earth. I believe in respecting the spirit of the space and honoring the garden’s possibilities.
What makes your business unique?
I am a passionate, boutique gardener so each garden is created with each client’s lifestyle, architecture and budget in mind. It’s a very personal space so it’s important to educate the client about the importance of the connectivity of the garden spaces and how it relates to the home’s interior. Strategic placement of textures, forms, fragrances and colors are the most important aspects. LGLD is a full service, concept to completion design firm that handles all aspects of creating gorgeous gardens so that our client’s love to live and play in their gardens.
Can you tell us a little bit about your process?
It all begins with an on-site consultation, typically followed by a scaled landscape design and plant key. At the initial meeting, I like to find out how the client lives, their garden dreams, and what makes them happy. Keeping in mind that most of my garden creations will outlive me, I design with the notion of what the mature garden will look like in three, five, ten years or decades from now. Typically, I visualize the future mature garden before leaving the initial consultation.
What do you love most about your job?
I absolutely love what I do! Taking an ordinary space and making it extraordinary extensions of the home is an absolutely transformational process. I’m so blessed to be able to make the world more beautiful, one garden at a time.

A shaker style door with a little bit of detail because it’s a very simple and timeless design. It’s not too trendy and will appeal for years to come and increase your home’s resale value.
I personally love a black bathroom cabinet with brass gold hardware. It’s very mid-century modern; think West Elm meets Anthropology. It’s easy to make a big impact in a smaller space like a powder room.
The more drawers, the better. Reducing clutter is life changing. Charging drawers are great in a bathroom for things like hair tools and maximizing countertop space.
Favorite Style for Kitchens? Classic vs. Contrast?
A full overlay door with concealed hinges, three inch stiles, rails, and a beaded detail. A classic look with a touch of sophistication and one of the easier profiles to keep clean, which is a plus in an active kitchen.
A shaker door painted a light color, which will open up a small space and the simple lines of the shaker door will not make the space too visually busy.
Mixing a color cabinet with woodstain gives a more organic look with texture and is easy to work with in any interior design style. Keep your hardware minimal and choose what best matches your appliances.
Ideal Storage Features? Preferred Finishes?
Pot and pan drawers are more convenient than roll out trays. You just have one pull out motion with drawers verses opening a door and then pulling out a shelf.
For a historic home renovation, I love the vintage finish which gives the cabinet an old world appearance that has stood the test of time. For a newly built modern beach house I love the light blue or green painted wood.

Tastefully furnished with high quality chairs, barstools, and tables from her storefront, owner Lisa invites us into her Mount Pleasant home.
For the House – The Barstool Shop offers over 150 styles of furniture from barstools, chairs, dining tables, coffee tables, and even wall decor. “People assume by the name that I just sell barstools, which is understandable, but I want to get the word out that I sell so much more,” she says. Spending most of her day assisting customers pick and choose different furniture for their homes, Lisa has furnished her Mount Pleasant abode with some of her favorite pieces from her store.

Lisa placed four modern navy blue and brown metal barstools with swivel seats around her new kitchen island turning it into a mini bar table. “I really liked the idea of having my friends and family sit around the island where we can eat or hang out while I am cooking. These barstools are stylish yet comfortable and I love how the shade of blue pairs with my tan wooden cabinets,” says Lisa. Many of the barstools in Lisa’s store can be customized down to the fabric, leg material, and finishes. “If I ever get bored of these seat colors, I can order another with a new fabric color and screw it into the frame. It’s that easy,” explains Lisa.

Nestled in the corner of her home is a glass top wooden ring table and two Sorrento swivel chairs, both of which are sold at For the House –The Barstool Shop. “This table is a perfect size for me and is versatile. I currently have a glass top, but a wooden top can also be ordered and can screw right into the frame,” Lisa tells us. These chairs come in a variety of different fabrics but Lisa chose a multicolored honeycomb pattern, which brings the color and components of the neighboring spaces together. “A huge benefit of furnishing your home with quality products like these, is the durability; it’s incredible. They will last for a very long time,” she emphasizes.
The living room has become a place where Lisa spends most of her down time. Paired with her rust-colored sofa is a large wooden coffee table and a cream-colored club chair. “I wanted to create a space that was comfortable to be in. This club chair is small, not too bulky and it swivels, too,” Lisa jokes, “as you get older, you have to keep your body moving, you know?” Lisa expresses that the club chair can be purchased in many different styles and over a hundred fabrics from her store. The coffee table can be customized from the size to the finish and belongs to a collection including side and end tables. “I love the natural colors of the wood grain and how it brings out the colors of the other furniture in this space,” says Lisa.

James McLeod first opened CLEOD Glass + Works in Massachusetts. With great success, he opened his showroom here in Charleston about a year ago.
James McLeod grew up in California and showed interest in art at a very young age. His mother helped foster his creativity by taking him to museums and encouraging his artistic endeavors. A true artist, James graduated from the California College Of Arts & Crafts where one glassblowing class changed the course of his life as an artist.
Each fixture starts off as a sketch and grows into a series of prototypes, each proposed to the client. The design process is as collaborative as the customer is comfortable with. Open communication with his clients throughout the glassblowing process allows them to have direct access to the heart of the work and input on the design as it takes form. This is just one way he ensures each piece is unique to the homeowners and their home.
Individual pieces of blown glass are carefully placed together on installation day to create the final product. These light fixtures are not mass produced because of James’ commitment to creating one-ofa-kind art that is also a functional part of the home. For many of his clients, these light fixtures are the first thing you see when you enter their home and there is always a neat story behind its design and how it came to be.

Over thirty years ago, my husband, Neal, started as an assistant project manager and worked his way up to Director of Purchasing of the east coast for a national builder. Neal’s job took us to Florida in early 2000 and I found myself working for a very high-end custom builder in Palm Beach. I oversaw purchasing, estimating, and permitting for new construction projects. In 2005, we moved back to Charleston, Neal's hometown, and in 2008, we started Cinder Creek Construction.
We believe a home is only as good as the person that is supervising the work daily. Therefore, we intentionally chose to be a small company, so we can personally oversee our projects. Plus, our different construction backgrounds bring a unique combination to the table to benefit our clients.
We tend to really enjoy the little details, like how the built-ins integrate with the trim. The little details many may not notice but it brings a design together in a cohesive subtle way, like the matching stain in the ceiling beams, mantle, and the soffit.
I really love how the design allows for seamless marsh views from the moment you enter the front door.

I’ve always enjoyed the combination of drafting and creating models. Eventually that would lead me to a path of architecture where I continue to enjoy creating thoughtful solutions that meet the clients’ objectives while also producing a harmonious design.
The interior layout was a high priority. There was a vision conveyed to us that we wanted to accomplish, and we would always circle back to that vision to make sure nothing was overlooked or sacrificed.
Communication is very important to us to produce a successful home for our clients. Any feedback we hear from the clients or the builder, directly helps convey an emotional attachment that we can prioritize. From there, we help guide the client through different iterations that address those priority spaces.
There are a lot of moving pieces that we want to simplify as much as possible with the owner. From an owner’s view, it can be overwhelming at times, and we want to assure them that through all types of phases from schematic design to construction, we are by their side.
An architect can really help guide a client through the project process and show design solutions that were thought to not be possible.

Brittany previously had a design firm in Denver, CO and upon moving to Charleston she worked for the Middleton Group Architecture firm. Brittany then decided to start her own design firm. During that time, Brittany and Stephanie collaborated on some projects in Stephanie's home. In doing so, they realized they made a great team and had the same vision.
This space belongs to an active family with pets and children. They entertain often, hosting large family gatherings and sports watch parties with friends. They wanted something stylish but also versatile, so our design focused on functionality and maximizing their existing space.
We understand that in order to accomplish anyone’s design dream, you must first recognize and understand how a space is currently used and what is and is not working for the family. We want to design spaces that are realistic and livable but also beautiful and easy to maintain for long-term satisfaction and function.
It’s hard to pick a singular space when working on an entire home because though each space was designed individually, consistent elements were incorporated throughout for a cohesive transition room to room. Carolina Relining Solutions has become the leading team to help homeowners repair clogged and aging sewer pipes without having to dig up your lawn.
7:00am
The Carolina Relining Solutions team begins their day by saturating the “new pipe” liner in epoxy resin in their Johns Island warehouse. The wet liner is then placed into a large metal drum known as the inversion drum. It’s time to load the trailer with all necessary equipment and the calibration tube. Once the trailer has been packed, Warren and his team head off to the project location.
10:00am
The team arrives at the project location. A series of tests must be conducted to ensure all buttons, lights, air, and chiller equipment work properly on site. During this time, a camera inspection of the corroded pipe is conducted. If debris or blockages are found, a chain or sandpaper flail will be used to descale the interior of the
existing pipe to get a smooth inside. Next, the pipe is flushed out using a hydro-jetter.
A technician preps the inversion drum by pulling out a bit of the wet liner and wrapping it around the head of the tube. The drum begins to fill with pressurized air and the head is placed inside the existing old pipe. Once enough air has filled the drum, the epoxy-soaked liner inside the drum will slowly flow out the tube into the pipe, where the resin can stick to the walls of the old pipe. After the pipe has been completely lined, a UV curing head will be threaded through and held there for about thirty to fifty minutes until the resin has dried.
Once the UV curing head is pulled back through the inversion drum, the liner must cool down for about thirty minutes. A post-camera inspection is conducted to make sure there are no openings, wrinkles, or sagging of the liner inside the new pipe. Once everything has been finalized, the remaining liner is cut off at the entrance of the pipe. The team at Carolina Relining Solutions begin to pack up their trailer and head back to their Johns Island warehouse.
Back at the warehouse, Warren’s team cleans the equipment and begins to prep for tomorrow’s relining projects.

So, we will take patterns of where these products are being applied and produce them back at the shop for the final installation. So, if you place an AC unit on the inside during a hot summer day it can be very beneficial, as well.

As one of the oldest cities in the country, Charleston recently welcomed its first set of public chess tables at Philip Simmons Park. Produced by Kenneth Lynch & Sons, the chess tables feature a green and white terrazzo playing surface defined by inlaid brass strips, the same popular product that can be seen throughout New York City parks. These chess tables are also a favorite of homeowners, and can be found in private gardens as well as parks across the country.

The use of darker design elements alongside the white painted brick and shiplap siding creates a beautiful contrast on this modern coastal home.
When Mike Irwin relocated from Hawaii to the Lowcountry, he searched for a house that he could make his own. “I didn’t necessarily want to buy a new build. I enjoy the characteristics of an older home, but I wanted something that could encompass European and Scandinavian design,” Mike tells us. He worked closely with a realtor who had shown him a few different properties, including this home in West Ashley, originally built in the 1950s with a red brick exterior. Although this home needed a serious makeover, it had several qualities
that he enjoyed, like the backyard pond and the home's location. After many conversations with his realtor, who introduced him to builder Shane Langdale of Peninsula Coastal Construction, LLC, Mike bought the West Ashley property determined to transform it.
Once Mike met with Shane, they began discussing ideas to increase the size of the home from 2,500 sq. feet to 4,300 sq. feet. This included a few new additions that would transition the home into an indoor/ outdoor villa by emphasizing the backyard water views. Having worked with Brian Wells of Coastal
Creek Design on previous projects, Shane knew he would be the perfect structural engineer for the job.
Brian specializes in residential structural design for renovations, additions, and new construction. The Coastal Creek Design team includes four designers and is led by experienced architects Joel Adrian and Linda Balzac. “We first measured the house and created a detailed set of architectural and structural plans. Then we worked hand in hand with the homeowner and Shane through the design process,” explains Brian. Starting with the exterior, the placement of

the front door was moved to be center with the home, creating a symmetrical contemporary design. While the bricks on the bottom half of the house were painted white, the top half of the house was torn off and restructured with white shiplap. Exterior greenery and landscape design by REMARK Landscape Architecture provides beautiful nature views throughout the property. “The exterior of the home was updated to be more modern but still reflects coastal Charleston architecture,” Brian tells us.
When entering the front door, your eyes are immediately drawn towards
the high vaulted ceilings with exposed beams salvaged from reclaimed wood. It’s hard to imagine that there was once an eight-foot ceiling in place to hold a second level. “The second story of the original homestead was removed above the living room, kitchen, and dining room. Then we tore down the walls to create a massive open floor plan,” builder Shane Langdale tells us. The grandeur of this space cannot be overlooked, as every detail lends itself to the international design Mike desired, like the navy-blue cabinetry in the kitchen, the Middle Eastern carpets and décor, and the upstairs office interior
windows. “I loved the idea of having an elevated office that overlooks the space below, something you may see in cities like New York, Paris, or London," Mike states, "Brian was able to make this happen."
The master bedroom is very spacious with shiplap walls, vaulted ceilings, and large black framed windows highlighting the water. Displayed on the walls are large colorful pieces of art that provide a nice balance of contrast with the lighter tones of the space. paneled walls, brass elements, a freestanding tub, a built-in sauna shower, and stone-gray heated floors.
“Working with Brian and his team was terrific. The quality of his architectural designs is something that stood out to me. We went through a variety of different designs but ended up landing on this one. I am very pleased with how this turned out,” Mike expresses. ✴

The owner of a globally inspired home furnishing store called upon one of his talented design consultants to facilitate the redesign of his Mount Pleasant abode.
Celadon Home has curated a vast selection for those who desire a free-spirited and wanderlust atmosphere within their home. It’s no wonder Celadon owner, Steve Lesniak and his wife, Kathleen Fox of ImaginGo, furnished and decorated their dwelling with products from the store. However, after renovating their home almost fifteen-years ago, it was time for another refresh. They worked with design consultant, Jessie Hatfield, to remodel their home with a new Celadon touch.
Working closely with Kathleen and Level Builders, Jessie did more than
introduce new products into the space, she also assisted with the renovation of the living room and kitchen area. Accentuating the open floor plan of the kitchen, breakfast nook, and living room, Jessie made sure to give each space its own personality while also tying in similar colors and textures. The lighting pendants hanging above the bar include black and brass detailing which can be seen throughout the rest of the house. A new black matte countertop from Vitoria International was installed to give a bit more texture to the space, and a series of tan leather woven barstools hug the outside of the kitchen counter creating a modern feel. extraordinary kitchen space, Jessie placed a oneof-a-kind vintage rug on the floor and styled the shelves with black mugs, cookbooks, and extra décor from Celadon Home.
Kathleen desired something more upbeat for the breakfast nook. A pink upholstered bench cushion was added to set a soft and cozy foundation, while a handful of handmade and block printed pillows lay on top. A modern white table sits in the middle of the space along with two wooden and woven chairs that complement the wooden hutch nestled to the right of the nook. Paying homage to how far Celadon has come, several classic pieces in the home were kept as part the updated design. “This hutch is a vintage Celadon product,” Jessie explains, “it just adds so much character to this space, we didn’t want to remove it.”
In the living room, Jessie updated the walls around the fireplace with contemporary wooden built-ins to accentuate the “California meets Charleston” vibe and styled them with potted plants and other décor she purchased from the store. Two black leather recliners frame the space, while two new white sofas sit upon a handspun golden rug, specifically made for Celadon. The dining room exudes with earth tones and textures. Velvet green chairs sit around a seventy-two-inch
hardwood table with complementing green plates and table décor. “After seeing these chairs in our store Kathleen fell in love. So, we designed this room around the chairs,” Jessie confesses. To connect the various design elements together, Jessie placed an abstract lighting fixture that almost mimics tree roots above the dining table and hung a couple of paintings on the walls.
The master bedroom was the final space to be redesigned. “Their large window overlooks the pond in the backyard so beautifully, I wanted to make sure to play off those colors,” Jessie tells us.
A light-colored hardwood dresser is positioned along the wall and embodies the color of sand. A new bed frame woven in gray leather and two sepiamirrored side tables face the window bringing out colors of the water including a signature white quilt made exclusively for Celadon Home. ✴

A Lowcountry interior designer struck gold when she partnered with a local construction company that prides themselves on being a full-service firm to completely renovate her Johns Island condo.
Expert professionals in the home and design industry will tell you that there tends to be a lot of cross over and collaboration between trades. Word of mouth recommendations can be the best way to network and find your next designer, installer, or builder. This was certainly the case for homeowner and interior designer, Mary Kate Muller of MK Interiors who connected with Watsky & Wieters Construction after receiving a verbal recommendation from Kit Campbell of Seaside Cabinetry & Design.
Mary Kate’s condo came with dated cabinetry and countertops, lime green walls in the kitchen, standard ceiling lights, tan tiles in the bathrooms, and light hardwood floors throughout the bedrooms and living area. After drawing up some new designs, Mary Kate reached out to David Watsky and Forest Wieters
of Watsky & Wieters Construction to begin a full renovation. “We basically took the reins on every aspect of her design. We are a full-service construction firm, and she came to us wanting almost every single detail to be updated,” David tells us.
The original kitchen floor plan was a restrictive space with a curved peninsula countertop that extended to the entry way of the condo. Desiring functionality and additional room for cooking and socializing, Forest and David reconstructed the entire kitchen by first removing the extended countertop and about six feet off the interior wall; opening the entire kitchen to the living room. “Next, we rebuilt the extended peninsula with a waterfall edge countertop from Granite Guys to provide a modern bar sitting area,” describes David. The original cabinetry was gutted and replaced with

all white cabinets from Seaside Cabinetry & Design with brass knobs from Rejuvenation and raffia wrapped antique brass pulls from The Society, Inc. Sleek and contemporary exposed shelving was added for displayed storage. Creating the illusion of an elongated kitchen, a gray stone backsplash from Zia Tile was placed above the stove top. A new range hood from Pinnacle Woodworks was installed and integrated into the wall design, seamlessly allowing the focus to be on the Australian sconces shining in symmetry. A gray and white checkered tile replaced what once were wooden floors, creating a fresh take on this contemporary kitchen redesign.
Beside the kitchen is Mary Kate’s office, a space once used as a guest bedroom with two twin sized beds, hardwood floors, and an overhead fan and lighting fixture. “I knew when we began this project that I needed to have an office where I could be inspired and work,” explains Mary Kate. In true Charleston fashion, David and Forest
installed white shiplap on all four walls which accentuates the large window that brings in natural light. Imported from Australia, hangs an oversized handwoven pendant from Gypset Cargo, providing a focused light on Mary Kate’s white desk. Creating a cohesive coastal flow throughout this office space, Watsky & Wieters Construction installed a single panel light green door with porcelain white knobs from Emtek. “Working with a blank canvas to create something new was very exciting for us. I love the way the shiplap looks against the other elements of the room,” Forest tells us.
While the layout of the master and guest bathrooms are that of the original footprint, Forest and David gave both spaces quite a makeover. Every element of these rooms were originally painted in cream or white paint. Begging for color, the guest bathroom was updated with a custom green vanity with single panel doors and a new countertop infused with recycled green glass and oyster shells from GlassEco Surfaces.

A dark hardwood framed mirror hangs above the sink to give texture and the towel hooks along the wall provide pops of yellow, orange, white, and blue. The master bathroom received a light blue painted vanity with an oyster shell countertop.
Updated plumbing fixtures from Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery were installed [brass in the guest bathroom and chrome in the master] along with a more modern tile on the floors from Melcer Tile.
Both showers were retiled from floor to ceiling with white tile, creating a silkysmooth finish to these refreshed spaces.
“Working with a designer makes our jobs so much easier, because she had a set of plans laid out and ready to go when she came to us. As a contractor, having that type of direction can be the determining factor on how efficiently and well-done a job can be completed,” Forest tells us. ✴

Finding proper window treatments that not only protect your family from the sun’s harmful UV rays and heat exposure but also complement your home is crucial. Throughout history, window treatments were seen as a functional element to interior design and that’s it. wood shades with room darkening liners, and motorized shades throughout the house,” he tells us.
The little girl’s room was the first space Ashton began designing. Painting the walls pink with white trim, Ashton wanted a window treatment to complement the space but also provide function and privacy in the room. “A row of solid wood, custom single panel white plantation shutters with hidden tilt features were installed above the bench and above the bed, creating a very sleek and modern look,” explains Judge, “then we placed split tilt plantation shutters on the far wall, in case she wanted to bring in some light at the top, but keep the bottom half closed for privacy.”
The homeowner’s son’s room was designed with darker tones like navy blue, brown, and green. Bringing texture into the room, Judge installed waterfall-style cordless woven wooden shades with a room darkening liner to help protect the room from UV rays. “These shades can come with or without a liner and the liner itself comes in either lightfiltering or light darkening. Both are dependent on how much light the person wants to see,” he says. The cordless feature is becoming a popular trend

The owners of this custom home wanted it to feel as spacious and coastal as possible. A trusted Lowcountry builder knew just the elements to incorporate.
In collaboration with Flatfish Island Designs, Brackish Builders constructed this couple’s seaside dream home from start to finish, inside and out, all details considered. In true coastal fashion, the elevated foundation welcomes an abundance of natural light inside the home with its large windows and bright white exterior.
There is ample hidden storage below the home for gardening supplies and other outdoor accessories which allows the homeowners to conceal visual clutter. The double garage doors are also hidden from the street view. These are the details that make a difference when constructing a crisp coastal aesthetic.
Upon entry, whitewash oak hardwood fills an open concept floor plan which commands a sense of serenity almost immediately. Playing off of the natural light that fills the space each day, the walls and trim are painted bright white and the staircase is nearly see through with its metal cable rods.
The color scheme is acutely coastal and calming. Everything in this home was designed to be light and bright. There are no harsh lines or dramatic colors, only soft and natural textures like the elegant oyster shell light fixtures and antique barn doors that close off the dining room.

In the open kitchen, the white hood above the range and white tile backsplash melt into the white quartz countertops creating a distinct contrast against the base cabinetry, which is painted an aqua blue with bronze hardware, reminiscent of the sun and sea. The natural wood window frame brings in a slight shade of a sandy beach. Backlit glass front wall cabinets were built to display the homeowner’s coastal ceramics and are crowned with thick white moulding.
The master bedroom was built for private access to the second story porch through
a large glass sliding door overlooking lush palms. Classic haint blue porch ceilings adorned with wood fans make for a relaxing and ultra coastal experience.
Through the bathroom barn door, marbled blue tile accents the frameless glass shower while the furniture style vanity sink was kept white along with the freestanding soaking tub. Large mirrors enhance the dispersion of light in the bathroom and makes the space feel more spacious and luxurious.

Annie Gallagher of Annie Gallagher Interiors has an eye for livability and comfort, something that allows her clients to make the most of her completed designs. For this project in particular, the homeowners wanted her to take total design control so long as their existing furniture pieces were implemented in the final design.
“Having complete say in a design is really exciting because I can get creative. I would never design a space I wouldn’t enjoy being in myself,” Annie says.
This home’s kitchen, living, and dining area hadn’t been updated
since the early 2000s. Picture dark cherry wood cabinetry, outdated fixtures, and worn out, faded fabrics. In order to integrate the home’s existing pieces, Annie first focused on reupholstering nearly every single seating piece and worked with fabrics that complemented one another, mixing textures and color.

for the newly all white sofa clad in durable performance fabric, a thoughtful selection for these homeowners who love to host. Subtle contrast from a mix of patterned throw pillows lends dimension without overwhelm which creates an inviting space to enjoy and entertain in.
The cozy green velvet armchair was revived to add a pop of color, and the new leopard seat cushions on the dining room chairs bring in texture that adds a contemporary twist to a more traditional piece of furniture. Because there are so many different fabrics and patterns involved in this space, Annie chose Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore on the walls and a herringbone sisal area rug to allow individual details to shine. Simplified custom draperies don’t impede the coastal view or compete with other decorative elements like the colorful artwork anchoring each side of the living area.
Conversation flows easily in a well designed sitting area. This was an important consideration for Annie when styling the renewed furniture. Annie’s arrangement of different seating areas in close proximity gives guests multiple places to wine and dine throughout the space and promotes movement and interaction as a whole.
Each area was designed in this way as part of a complete environment with a relaxing ambiance that unfolds naturally. The blend of antique furniture with new contemporary pieces gives the space an updated character with familiar comfort for the longtime homeowners, who couldn’t be happier with the end result. ✴

A quick flip of this Mount Pleasant home required new hardwood flooring as well as fresh tile in the laundry, kitchen, and master bathroom. With guidance from flooring professional, Savannah Bonnette, these seemingly small updates made all the difference.
When taking on a complete house remodel, especially on a short timeline, replacing hardwood floors and tile details immediately makes for a dramatic, lasting visual impact. Because the owners of this home wanted to move in as quickly as possible, they called on Elegant Flooring to begin the first and largest part of their renovation. The hardwood installation took about a week and the finishing process was followed by sanding and sealing for protection. After an adequate dry time, the first coat of finish was applied. Lastly,
the white-primed shoe molding was installed & the Australian Cypress floors were buffed and finally coated with the highest durability oil-based polyurethane, for a nice shine.
A little over one thousand square feet of solid Australian cypress hardwood was installed throughout the entire home. Homeowners often choose this kind of hardwood for the ease of upkeep and its naturally unique color. The hardwood is rich and warm, which presents a unique contrast against rooms with tile, like in the bathroom and laundry room.

The team at Elegant Flooring had to get creative here, cutting the larger pieces of tile down to 12x12 to fit the space and design concept. Savannah notes, “it is incredibly difficult to get flushed edges with this tile selection, so we are really proud of how this turned out.” Flushed edges are when the tile is polished at a slant on all sides so nothing sticks up straight with a sharpness. This allows for a marble-like smooth look and feel without any raised edges or texture to the touch.
A similar challenge in terms of edging presented itself in the kitchen with
the handmade tile on the backsplash. Because this tile is so thick, standard Schluter edging was not going to work for this design. Instead, smaller pieces were cut and polished to complete the edging in a more natural way. The tile itself has a distressed and sculpted look with a lot of variation in the color shading, so customizing the edge pieces gave the backsplash more of a bespoke look.
The master bathroom features all porcelain tile and a zero-entry glass frame shower which includes a freestanding tub inside. This is an innovative design alternative for those who want to avoid the standard prefabricated shower and tub combo.
The window sill and niche, or wall cutout, is an engineered stone for a
dinge-resistant place to store shower products. The wall tiles are polished for shine and the floor is matte, something Savannah recommends for anyone to prevent slipping. Because the shower tiles are so large, they had to be cut and laid in a specific pattern for proper water drainage. Apart from around the drain, the tile pattern carries from the outside of the shower all the way up the wall for design consistency, a small detail with great effect. ✴

To limit exterior upkeep, virtually maintenance free materials like an all white cement board with accents of pine and garapa wood were used to give the appearance of a traditional farmhouse. For modernity, there are no corner boards on the siding, instead, fry reglet and aluminum. Their hybrid design continues as far as the roofing material which is a mixture of asphalt shingle and standing seam metal to give the house more character.
Family and community were the driving forces behind the layout and design of this home. Because there are no ceiling transitions like a coffered ceiling or dropped header, it offers a clear line of sight from the front to the back of the house that gives the appearance of one continuous space and emphasizes a sense of togetherness.
The imported African marble slab island in the kitchen serves as a true gathering place with its abundant size and space. “We love to cook and entertain and everyone ends up in the
kitchen. We designed this room so that it could accommodate a large group, where even in separate parts of the living space, everyone is still together,” Michelle tells us.
Another goal of theirs was to integrate user friendly details like the second stair tread doubling as a floating bench by the front door. “We like to have a place for guests to drop their belongings. It’s not an extra piece of furniture but a functional architectural detail,” Anthony says. Additionally, a smaller back kitchen was built as a central prep space to conceal any mess. Other functional elements include a large walk-in pantry, wine cooler wall, and quartz countertops that are more food prep friendly than marble. Even the refrigerator and dish washer are concealed by contemporary slim shaker style panels for a seamless, clean look in the main kitchen.

low-maintenance luxury. Instead of traditional molding, sheet rock reveals were used for a more modern and clean look. The reglet and base designs are used throughout the entire home to establish a consistent flow from room to room.
Around the fireplace is what looks like classic wood shiplap in true farmhouse style, but it’s actually all cementious board painted white. Because a ventless fireplace will emit heat, noncombustible materials were required for code. This is an excellent example of Cornerstone’s ability to find alternative solutions for desired designs rather than having to compromise or sacrifice certain elements.

Family is important but everyone needs their space. Because their family on both sides is out of state, the retreat, as they call their guest house, allows everyone to have their own space and to feel comfortable while away from home. The structure is just twenty feet from the home and technically detached, but connected by the porch roof and bridge, commonly referred to as a "hyphen." When family isn’t in town, the space doubles as Anthony’s office and a home theatre. This West Ashley home received a much-needed landscape renovation decorated with elegant and durable planters, benches, and gliders from a family-owned garden and décor center.
When Nickie Summers of Summers Landscaping began working on this West Ashley home, she was given free-rein to design the front and back yard however she pleased. The homeowners lived in an older neighborhood and the home itself had not had a proper landscaping job in almost thirty years. “The front yard didn’t really have grass but more brown weeds, and it had a steep slope with only a sidewalk connecting the driveway to the front steps,” Nickie says. After digging up the unwanted greenery, only a hedge of holly bushes remained. Nickie got to work, creating a fresh row of flowerbeds and bushes, and adding some hardscape details.
After the landscaping was complete, Nickie wanted to add a few more unique touches to take her design to the next level. “One of my main goals, for any of my designs, is to incorporate different elements that I can get from The Tree House,” explains Nickie.
The Tree House is a family-owned home and garden décor center located on Johns Island. Ginger Summers, Nickie’s mother, is the owner of the shop. Approaching their ten-year anniversary, she explains what originally started out as a small floral shop has grown into a landscaper’s dream. “One of the many things we do at The Tree House is offer landscapers discounts on pottery,” Ginger states.

For this dwelling, Nickie placed two large concrete pots on the front porch framing the doorway. “I wanted something that would stand out, yet not distract from the entire house. While they are very large in size and heavy, they also have soft lines which brings a nice balance to the home when you see it,” describes Nickie. Ginger advises homeowners to consider the area in which they live when choosing types of outdoor pottery. “The concrete pots are great, especially for homes in a hurricane zone. Their weight prevents them from falling over in strong winds. The ceramic pots are great in heat exposure,” tells Ginger. Another product purchased from The Tree House was a beautiful stone bench that is nestled under the large oak tree in the front yard, surrounded by the fresh flowerbeds. “I wanted there to be a quiet place for the homeowners to sit and relax,” Nickie says.
The backyard also received a full makeover, including a stone wall and fireplace, a deck, and a spectacular pool built by Heritage Pools. In front of the stone fireplace
sits four American-made black gliders, perfect for taking in a cooler Carolina night. Made from recycled plastic with aluminum on the back, these gliders will weather nicely in the Lowcountry climate. Around the pool area, Nickie placed four tall black ceramic planters filled with breathtaking greenery. “I chose these tall, skinny planters with a neutral color, just to let the colors of the environment pop,” describes Nickie.
Landscape décor is a growing trend and can truly elevate any outdoor living space. “Strategically placing little elements like a fountain or the bench in the garden can enhance the overall look of the yard and it also shows off your personality,” Ginger says. After ten years in business, The Tree House continues to grow and Ginger urges everyone to come out and explore. ✴

Some say that timing is everything when it comes to investments. We asked Karyn what her recommendations were for taking advantage of social security and when to pull out of the stock market or buy in. She tell us, “the timing decision will be based on whether an individual is still working, the individual’s other sources of income such as their investment portfolio, and the individual’s life expectancy based on their health history and family longevity. Generally, the lower your expected long-term
investment return and the longer your life expectancy, the more it pays to wait to take your benefit.” Karyn emphasizes how Carolinas Wealth Management will work with clients to determine the best estimate of their “break-even age” for benefits to begin so there is no money left on the table.
For those looking to purchase a new home, her rule of thumb is the twenty-eight percent rule, meaning, you should spend no more than twenty-eight of your gross monthly income on your monthly mortgage amount including principal, interest, taxes, and insurance costs. Factors to consider are your monthly income, the price of the home, current interest rates, available down payment, taxes, insurance, PMI (private mortgage insurance if down payment is less than twenty percent), credit score, monthly debt, and personal assets. After purchasing a vintage home in downtown Charleston, this homeowner turned to a locally owned furniture store that specializes in everything modern and contemporary to completely furnish his entire home.
Having spent the last several years traveling the world and living on a boat, this adventurous explorer decided to plant some roots and buy a house on the peninsula of Charleston. Originally built in 1804, the home kept its classic colonial exterior, however, its new resident wanted the home’s interior to match his contemporary lifestyle. Modern furniture can be described as having smooth surfaces, clean straight lines, and warm neutral colors. In need of new furniture, he turned to the expertise of Paul Haugaard and Katy Boone of Danco Modern Furniture in Mount Pleasant.
“Originally, this homeowner came in looking for a living room set and a sleeper sofa for his guest bedroom. He was already a big fan of the Stressless brand, which we carry a lot of,” floor manager, Katy Boone remembers. enjoyed working remotely, so each space needed to be fluid and interchangeable. She began with the TV room, furnishing it with two black leather Stressless recliners with ottomans, as well as two red BINK side tables, ideal for when he wants to work on his laptop. A large abstract black and white area rug lays in the center of the room creating a cohesive flow and balance throughout the entire space.
Walled off from the rest of the house with a singular entrance is the dining room. The homeowner wanted simple and classy furniture to match the already intimate feeling of the space. Katy selected a glass extension table with wooden legs and paired it with six gray leather chairs. The straight, clean lines and rustic wood detailing is a perfect blend of feminine and masculine design.
In the guest bedroom, the homeowner chose a solid cherry wood platform bed with an attached side table, domestically built in Vermont. “The bed frame can come with or without the side table,” she says. Staying neutral,
a white and gray bed spread and pillows were picked to compliment the gray fur rug.
The last room to be furnished was the master. “I found this gorgeous black leather headboard and metal bed frame,” she tells us. Known as the “Boss Bed,” the strong, straight lines are lessened by the padded headboard made with black leather, specially fabricated in Italy. The headboard lays parallel to the wall reaching well above five feet tall, making it the true protagonist of the room. A geometrical multi-level dresser and side table sits beside the bed completing this contemporary space.
“In years past, people seemed to think if they lived in a traditional home, they had to have traditional furniture. But that trend has changed, people are beginning to realize modern furniture can be used in any setting,” Paul expresses. ✴

Charleston Custom Closets, LLC helped this family with young children make better use of their pantry, laundry room, and master bedroom closet for a more manageable and organized lifestyle.
Chaotic closets and cluttered pantries call for professional and personalized space saving solutions. That’s where Nathan Kramer, comes in. Seven years ago, he was working in pharmaceutical sales and the industry was changing rapidly. He decided to look for something more fulfilling and through an unusual series of coincidences, he ended up starting a closet company. A natural problem solver and entrepreneur, Nathan saw an opportunity to help fill the need for storage solutions for families across the Lowcountry.
Like many projects, the customer starts with something that’s just not
functional. Nathan works with his customers during the consultation process to find a solution that pairs with their needs, wants, and budget. He then provides digital renderings of the design solutions making it easy for the client to visualize and understand how it will work for them.“We custom cut a lot of the material on-site. It allows us to really go wall to wall with everything and get the most out of each space no matter the size or configuration,” Nathan says.

A common problem for many homeowners, including this family, are the standard fixed wire shelves that were installed in their pantries and closets by the original home builder. These basic shelves tend to waste a lot of space because they can’t be adjusted and are often just on one side of the closet. With a custom system, Nathan is able to maximize the vertical wall space with adjustable shelving all around, and a combination of doors, drawers, and retractable wire baskets. “The baskets are really nice because you can retract them out, set it on the counter to organize snacks, and slide it right back in its space,” Nathan says. The homeowner remarks how handy it is to have accessible snacks
for her children and their friends to share without requiring her help.
Once the kitchen pantry was completed, the homeowners were interested in bringing the same organizational ease into their master bedroom closet. “Some of the solutions are rather simple but make a huge impact like the soft close, full extension drawers, meaning they open completely and the very back of the drawer is visible,” he tells us. Nathan was able to customize their closet to include a separate space for each spouse’s wardrobe as well as seasonal storage that can be easily accessed as needed. This functionality all comes down to the number of adjustable shelves and
built-in drawers that have been carefully measured and designed to use every inch of this specific space for thoughtful storage. Utilizing wall space in a custom closet like this also brings everything off of the floor and keeps things like shoes and accessories in view with the rest of a wardrobe. Clear entry and ample storage space in this closet has been “one of the most stress relieving experiences,” the homeowner tells us. Every item now has a designated place to go and the shelves can be easily shifted as new items are added for long-term storage. Nothing is lost in the clutter. ✴

It was important to the owners of this historical downtown home that their garden updates respect the property. Contractors did so by integrating existing historic material with contemporary stone selections.
The goal of this project was to create a classic, peaceful, and inviting feel. To help realize their vision, the homeowners worked with a team of experienced design professionals to renovate their outdoor living space which included a complete pool remodel, hardscapes, and a new landscape design.
Landscape Architect, Glen Gardener, planned the overall design of this project with the help of contractor, Bill Kent, landscape designer, Jerry Port, and SiteOne Stone Center’s Dirck Reichard. Because this was a historic renovation, the hardscape selections from SiteOne Stone
Center played a major role in the outcome of the project. Dirck shares that, “It is extremely important that the new materials [used for the hardscapes] blend well with existing brick and stone, especially on a historic property.”
The first and arguably largest part of this project involved digging out the original raised pool and lowering its elevation for even ground. Aqua Blue Pools of Charleston built the new pool with SiteOne’s limestone along the pool deck and coping. the geometry of the pool and is soft to the feet when in and out of the water.
There are two sections of custom fabricated bluestone that create a seamless transition from one stone type to another. This allowed for a fluidity among the garden’s domains whether it be the pool and cabana or the outdoor dining area. There is no harsh separation yet a subtle distinction of space.
A seamless blend of hardscape material was especially important for the new driveway which incorporated old English brick from the 1890’s, recovered from the property during the renovation preparation. Because there was not enough historic material to fill the entire space, the team decided to lay just the front driveway apron with the historic brick in a herringbone

After purchasing a spec house on Sullivan’s Island, the new residents hired the original builder to customize their new home including new interior features and building a detached cottage.
While completing a historic renovation on Sullivan’s Island, Evan Diament, owner of Diament Building Corp. was introduced to the talented team of Beau Clowney Architects, who hoped to partner with him for a new build nearby. Evan proudly agreed and planning commenced for this raised coastal beach house. With a “build within budget” goal in mind, Evan used composite exterior materials like the Hardie Artisan shiplap siding to withstand the tumultuous climate of the Lowcountry. A Bahamian corrugated-style metal roof was installed to give a rustic yet sleek look
to this contemporary home. This style of roofing is leak-proof, durable, and enhances indoor comfort with cooling capabilities. Maximizing the number of windows throughout the home build was a strategic design to accentuate the views and bring in natural light to showcase the hardwood interior details.
Before the new build was complete, it had been purchased by its new owners. A couple of months later, Evan was hired back on to renovate the interior of the home to fit the needs of the new residents. “The original build was sleek and very much of a blank canvas for the new owners to make their mark,” explains Evan. His new clients wanted

to add sinker cypress beams throughout their home, add a dual master suite, and build a detached cottage to host multiple guests. Working closely with interior designer, Luann McCants the use of teal against the hardwood features of the home creates a beautiful blend of coastal cabin chic in the living room.
The use of funky and colorful wallpaper brings each room to life like the butler pantry which is decorated in tiny black and white polka dots, or the guest bathroom decorated with large black palm leaf wallpaper. The coastal kitchen design bordered with shiplap includes woven shades, gold and white
pendants, and a deep teal backsplash beneath the range hood that matches the kitchen island and window frames, effortlessly.
Included in Evan’s original build was an exquisite outdoor living space built for poolside leisure. Some updated features to accommodate the new owners included a mahogany gate entrance, a covered outdoor game room, and a custom-built wooden bench near a cast iron fire-pit. Creating a perfect outdoor living space to enjoy warm Carolina nights with friends and family.
Having worked on this house two separate times, Evan looks back on the
challenges he had to face by staying within both client’s fixed budgets. “The pandemic was the biggest challenge on this project. Most of the work for both phases were completed with material shortages, price increases, and material delays,” describes Evan. Nevertheless, he was successful in the “build within budget” goal set when he first began.
“It is incredibly important to have a builder involved during the design phase to help ensure the designs fall within the owner’s budget,” he says. ✴

After spending years replacing the hardwood floors in his Johns Island cottage, this homeowner discovered the beauty and unique nature of epoxy flooring.
Homeowner, Kyle Souza has lived in his Johns Island abode for the past thirteen years. While the upkeep was that of a normal homeowner, he began noticing a pattern with his hardwood flooring on the first level. “I have replaced my hardwood floors about five different times over the course of my stay here,” he says. The cost of removing and replacing his flooring every three years began to take its toll, so Kyle took to social media to find alternative options. “I was doing some research on Facebook, and I came across a few different flooring professional pages. I sent them all a message, but Vairon Ocampo [of Oli and Peter Professional
Epoxy, LLC] was the first to message me back,” he explains. After having their initial consultation and seeing Vairon’s work, Kyle was sold.
Oli and Peter Professional Epoxy, LLC began in 2018 after Vairon’s brotherin-law expressed interest in wanting to have his garage floor resurfaced with epoxy. “I was working on the military base at the time, but I was interested to learn how to do epoxy flooring. I volunteered to epoxy his garage floor and realized I was not only good at it, but I also really enjoyed it,” he states.
Soon enough, his business began making a name for itself working with local organizations, churches, and

For each project, a special mix of epoxy resin, color powder, and metal pigments are blended to create a one-of-a-kind design. “Blending might be the hardest part of my job. I must be extremely precise when I am blending the mixture as it might
create a different color than what the homeowner wants. If this happens, I will have to start all over,” describes Vairon. Once the mix is successfully blended, Vairon carefully pours the epoxy on the floor, swaying back and forth to create his popular marble designs. “Anyone can work with epoxy, but I believe to be successful you must be unique in one thing. For me that is my marble designs, which mimics the movement of real marble,” he says.

makes for a very happy homeowner. “I love it. It is so unique, that all my neighbors want to come over to see it,” Kyle says. A bullet proof clear coat is laid over the completed floor to give a nice shine and take a sense of worry off Kyle’s mind. “Knowing this floor won’t get damaged, really eases my mind. It’s easy to clean and just brings a new personality to my home of thirteen years,” expresses Kyle. ✴

After the loss of his mother and father within a twoyear span, Chris Singleton has become a beacon of hope and perseverance in the face of tragic adversity. Standing up to hatred and racism through the power of love and acceptance, Chris’ life journey has been a unique one. From playing baseball for Charleston Southern University to being drafted by the Chicago Cubs, and now being a renowned inspirational speaker and a bestselling author all before the age of twenty-seven is something to be admired. Having to overcome the many struggles life has thrown their way, Chris and Mariana have created a beautiful and safe home for their young family to thrive for years to come.

The former professional baseball player now travels the country to share his story with major corporations like Microsoft, Boeing, and Volvo, as well as many students and educators worldwide.In August of 2021, the Singletons moved into a classic red brick house in North Charleston. “We really enjoy the character an older home can have; something you cannot get from a new build. However, we wanted to incorporate our own style into it,” says Mariana. Due to Chris’ hectic travel schedule and the fact that Mariana was thirty-seven weeks pregnant with their second son, time was of the essence. To assist with their remodeling needs, Mariana hired interior designers Kyle and Ashley Allard of KASL Design Co. LLC and Mario Marinho of Doctor’s Painting & Serv’s LLC. One week after closing on the house, renovations commenced.
From the moment you enter the Singleton home, you are at ease. There is a peaceful Zen that exudes from every corner of this house, which was done intentionally. “It was important for me to have a house that my family feels safe in. A place where we can close the doors to the outside world and be ourselves,” Chris describes.
The front door opens to a grand foyer with a large winding staircase that guides your gaze upwards towards the ceiling where a large black candle-style chandelier hangs. Neutral tones along with black and hardwood elements is a constant theme throughout the home. “I told our
interior designer, Ashley, that we wanted a farmhouse chic design with clean and functional spaces. She took what I said and ran with it,” Mariana tells us.
Off to the side of the foyer is the dining room decorated with a large wooden table, beautiful tan chairs, a black chandelier, and a vintage rug, along with table décor from Celadon Home and the Megan Molten Shop. “The Singleton’s love to entertain, so having dedicated spaces to gather with their friends and family was a must,” explains interior designer, Ashley Allard of KASL Design Co. with ample seating options. Bringing in a bit of texture, handwoven straw décor elements are sprinkled about. Staying consistent with the color palette, the kitchen received brand-new white cabinetry with black hardware, natural wood shelving, and a waterfall edge countertop fabricated from Aria quartz by South Star Granite. “We tend to cook with a lot of ingredients that can stain, so we needed something that was durable and easy to clean,” describes Mariana.
The backyard elements of the original blueprint are what caught Mariana’s attention. “I love being outside. It was important to me to have an indoor/outdoor living space,” she states. An enclosed patio with screened windows attaches to a large wooden deck, furnished with comfortable sofas, an outdoor kitchen, and a TV. Growing up, Mariana spent her summers back in
Brazil with her cousins and grandparents. She tells us, “Having this safe backyard helps me feel connected to my Brazilian roots.”
When it came to their son’s bedrooms, the goal was to design spaces that could grow as they do.
CJ’s room is very spacious, perfect for a four-yearold to play around in. A white shiplap accent wall and roman shades fashions a coastal atmosphere. Keeping a minimalistic design, CJ has a tic-tac-toe wall, a climb n’ slide bed with chalk-board siding, and a quaint reading nook. Caden’s safari themed nursery is designed with sage green wainscoting and furnished with neutral and black accents to match the rest of the house. A playful yet comfortable space where he can crawl and explore as he grows.

The master bedroom and bathroom include pops of blue, Mariana’s favorite color. It can be seen in the rugs, pillows, bathroom vanity, and wall décor. Looking back on their journey to finding this home, Mariana and Chris do not forget their humble beginnings. “We have never had a room that could fit a king-sized bed before. It’s kind of surreal,” she confesses.
Chris’ office was designed with purpose. Needing a place to focus on his mission, Chris filled his space with special items like his Chicago Cubs
jersey and a beautiful painting of his mother. Playing backdrop to many of Chris’ virtual speaking events is a faux brick accent wall painted in “black magic” by Sherwin-Williams along with two black shelves that displays his many achievements, like a letter he received from the White House.
“After the renovations were complete, I thought this is our forever home which is not something I’ve ever said about any of our past homes. I can picture our sons posing for their proms on the staircase or hanging out with their
friends in our entertainment room. The longevity of what this house could be for us means everything to me,” expresses Chris.
Born near Atlanta, GA, Chris is the oldest of three siblings. His mother worked as a speech language pathol ogist and a children’s youth pastor, while his father coached football and worked as a special education teacher. Chris was introduced to sports at a very young age. “We were a big sports family. My mom ran track in college
and my dad played football. I was three when I began playing baseball in pee-wee leagues. It was the first time I played orga nized sports and I just fell in love with the game,” he remembers. Another major part of his childhood was their faith. “It became such a huge part of who we were as a family and who I am now,” he states.
During his childhood, Chris’ family relocated to his father’s hometown of Charleston, SC. Dreaming of playing professional baseball, Chris played center field for Goose Creek High School where he also met his now wife, Mariana. “I already had a huge crush on him. One night after a basketball game, he asked for my number via Twitter. He was very smooth,” she explains. The rest is history.
On June 17, 2015, Chris’ mother, Rev. Sharonda ColemanSingleton attended an evening bible study at Mother Emanuel AME Church in downtown Charleston. That night she lost her life, along with eight others in an event that shook the nation. Chris was eighteen at the time and attending Charleston
Southern University. Forced into the national spotlight by media attention, Chris was interviewed by many news outlets like the Today Show. “I was surrounded by cameras, but I didn’t put on a show. I just expressed what was in my heart, which is that everyone is deserving of love no matter what they look like. That is how my mother loved and I wanted to keep her spirit alive,” Chris explains.
Almost a year and a half after his mother passed away, Chris suffered another unimaginable loss - his father. “Losing both my parents so close to each other was rough. All I wanted was to keep my brother and sister as close to me as possible. I was al most twenty and Mariana was nineteen, but we decided to have my younger siblings live with us,” he tells us.
After the loss of his mother, Chris was determined to make his dreams of going pro a reality. “I shifted my entire focus to being drafted and making my mom proud. Losing her was what I call the ‘pivot moment’ of my life,” he tells us. At the time, Chris and Mariana were expecting their first son, CJ. One day, while he was

at work cleaning pools, Chris’ life changed again. “I remember I was cleaning an above ground pool in Goose Creek, when I received the call saying I had been drafted by the Chicago Cubs to play in the minor leagues,” he remembers. Chris traveled the country and played for the Chicago Cubs for two seasons. When looking back on his time as a pro fessional baseball player, Chris recalls taking steps to heal. “I started seeing a licensed therapist when I played in the minor leagues. I had never considered going to therapy before, but it was very eye-opening. It helped me lose the fake ‘I’m fine' mentality I was trying to portray. Through therapy I became a better man in the long run,” he states.
Chris makes the most of his downtime with his wife, Mariana and their two sons, Caden and CJ.
Both Caden and CJ’s rooms were designed with calming neutral colors and soft textures; perfect for tiny growing humans.
Set to marry his high school sweetheart in November 2019, Chris was presented with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “I received this message on Twitter from a guy saying he was a producer for this upcoming TV show on the Lifetime Channel called My Great Big Live Wedding with David Tutera, and they were giving away free weddings,” he says to us. In disbelief, Chris ignored the message but then he received another one to set up a casting interview. “We were scheduled to get married November 2019 with a wedding budget of 15K, but this show wanted to give us a 100k wed ding at no cost to us,” Mariana describes. The only catch was that the wedding ceremony was going to be broadcast on live TV. In February 2019, Chris and Mariana wed with their friends, family, and America watching.
Throughout his time playing for the Chicago Cubs, one thing Chris found himself doing more and more of was public speaking. Shortly after the horrific event at Mother
Emanuel AME, Chris was continuously asked to speak to different groups and organizations. “I never thought that this could be a career for me. I didn’t know I could support my family by bringing unity and love to other people,” he ex presses. Encouraged by his friends and family, Chris began to rebrand himself as an inspirational speaker. “I started out doing fifteen speaking engagements per year, then that grew to fifty-four, then to eighty-four, and in 2021, I completed 121 speaking events,” he says.
Spreading like wildfire, Chris’ mission ‘love is stronger than hate’ has been heard by major corporations, universities, and professional sports teams, but his favorite audience to speak to are educators. “If I can inspire a teacher who has twenty-five kids in their classroom per year to teach love and acceptance to their students, the impact of that is going to be huge,” he explains with a gleam in his eyes.

about demographic – children. “The best way I could reach younger kids was to write a children’s book,” he admits. In 2020, Chris wrote and self-published his first book Different –A Story About Loving Your Neighbor. Becoming an overnight success and selling over forty-thousand copies, Different was labeled a #1 Teacher’s Pick by Amazon and grabbed the attention of many well-known organizations like the Obama Foundation. Chris has since written two more children’s books, Your Life Matters and most recently, Baseball Around the World; he is in the process of writing his fourth book which will be targeted towards adults.
“First and foremost, everything I do is to keep my mother’s memory alive, as well as the others who lost their lives that day. I owe it to my mom to spread the word of unity and love. Sometimes you go through ‘sink or swim’ moments. I am just so thankful that my God has given me the strength to keep
swimming over the last seven years, when I could have easily drowned,” Chris expresses.
As true entrepreneurs, Chris and Mariana started a real estate business together in 2018 called Singleton Holdings, owning about fifteen rental properties around the Lowcountry. Hoping to grow this endeavor within the next five years, Mariana handles all the renovation needs, tenant relations, and hires contractors.
Chris and Mariana have created a multi-lingual household for their two boys. “It’s a blended world and language is such a huge barrier between human connections. I don’t want my sons to say, ‘I wasn’t able to impact the world because I don’t speak the language,’ that is why I am passionate about immersing them into different cultures,” Chris states.

With spooky season here, what better way to celebrate than to explore some of downtown Charleston’s most haunted haunts? We speak with walking tour guide, Tommy Dew, Ed Macy, author of the best-selling book, Haunted Charleston, and Karen White, author of the ghostly Tradd Street series, to help break down the city’s long history of ghost stories.
Charleston, South Carolina is not only known as being a beautiful city filled with rich architecture, but also having a haunted history. According to tour guide, Tommy Dew, there are three reasons why Charleston is filled with so many spooky ghost stories; tragedy, time, and being the number one city for slave trading in the United States. “One of the main ingredients to any 'ghost story' is tragedy, which Charleston has had its fair share of,” Tommy continues, “In Charleston's 340-year existence, we have experienced around twenty-one deadly hurricanes, five great fires, the largest earthquake on the East coast, the Revolutionary War and Civil War, and many epidemics." With many original homesteads still standing, there have been several eerie and supernatural recorded events that have taken place.

The College of Charleston purchased and renovated this home in 1966. A young couple who worked for the university moved in. “One night the couple was lying in bed, reading a book with the lights on when a man entered their room and stood before their bed. He attempted to speak to them, but no words came out of his mouth. After a few moments, the frustrated man left the room through a solid plaster wall,” Ed Macy describes in his book, Haunted Charleston.
Inspiring the cover art of her widely successful novel The House on Tradd Street, New York Times Bestselling Author, Karen White chose this house at 125 Tradd Street. “I needed a southern city steeped in history, filled with beautiful architecture, and of course, a good supply of ghosts,” Karen tells us. The series follows a medium named Melanie and the many spirits she encounters in and around Charleston.
In 1772, John Fullerton designed, built, and owned this downtown home. Legend has it that whenever John played the spinet, or small piano, for his children in the living room, a vision of an indigenous man would be seen peeking through the first story window. “The spirit would have to be around six feet, eight inches to reach that first story window,” Ed points out.
The second installment of Karen White’s Tradd Street series is The Girl on Legare Street. The home on the cover of the novel was inspired by the Miles Brewton House. In this novel, Karen’s protagonist Melanie along with her estranged mother, who also has psychic abilities, renovate their old family home but end up stirring up a maleficent spirit who is ready for carnage.
On August 31, 1886, the strong hurricane hit Charleston causing devastating damages. “When the hurricane hit Charleston, a young English boy who had arrived only eight hours before, ran outside but was crushed by a piece of masonry that had broken off the side of the house. His ghost can be heard knocking on the front door trying to come back inside,” Ed Macy describes in his second book, Haunted Harbor.
Built in the 1730s, this house served as the residence of a young whistling doctor named Joseph Ladd Brown. One day, Joseph naively participated in a duel with an ex-friend to save his reputation in Philadelphia Alley. During the dual, he was injured and spent his last dying days at home.
“It’s been said that whenever a tragedy occurs in or around the house, whistling can be heard on the staircase,” says Ed Macy.

The Pink House is one of the oldest residential houses in Charleston dating back to 1712. Originally serving as a tavern for some ghastly characters, it is rumored to have been previously owned by the first female pirate, Anne Bonny. Ed Macy says, “Throughout the years, the Pink House has been used as an art gallery and now serves as a home, but every now and again the sight of a ghostly woman appears on the stairwell.”

Mark Bryan, lead guitarist for Hootie and The Blowfish, always dreamed of renovating the old shrimper’s cabin on his historic Charleston property into a recording studio. As if plucked from the New England countryside, this space is separate from his main quarters, where life slows and musical creativity grows.
What began in a University of South Carolina dorm turned into one of the most recognized and beloved bands of all time. Growing up just outside of Washington, D.C., Mark Bryan always had the “bug” as he calls it; a love for the energy of music. He brought his guitar down to school and soon met Darius Rucker and Dean Felber. A few beers and weeks later, Hootie and The Blowfish was born. Mark also had a passion for sportscasting, something he watched his father take on back home in Maryland. By the time he graduated with his degree in Broadcast Journalism, the band’s popularity had grown far beyond the USC campus and they hit the road touring all over the world.
South Carolina quickly claimed Mark as a native and he eventually planted full-time roots in Charleston amidst his success. He tell us, “one thing about staying in South Carolina, is that there’s a built-in modesty and humility to it,” and the fact that Charleston is “a creative town and vibrant community for artists. You just feel it when you’re here,” he says.
The construction of Mark’s new recording studio is rooted in a shift of perspective and his growth as a musician. For almost twenty years, he had written and recorded music in the same studio inside of his home. While lovely and packed with memories and chart topping success, it had always been a dream of his to transform the old shrimp shack on his property into a recording studio and creative getaway. With help from architect, Joe Tucker of Tucker Architectural Associates and builder, Chris Brassfield of Brassfield Custom Homes, this passion project took form over the course of a year.

A nod to his childhood in Maryland, the exterior of the studio was built with cedar shingle siding to resemble a New England cottage. The structure was elevated with concrete pillars painted to look like natural wood with rock beds surrounding its grounds. An old well below the original structure was discovered during the demolition. It was capped and moved to another spot on the property for future use, if necessary.
The interior of the studio features salvaged wood from the original structure used to create rustic panels on the walls. Most of the materials used for this build are natural and create a welcoming warmth. In contrast, interior designer, Sarah Graif, used pops of color and texture with layers of vintage rugs and accent walls of wallpaper. These design details add flare and play up the custom millwork by Bob
Smith with Artistic Cabinetry and Millwork. Sound engineer, Mike Costanzo, designed and installed the sound boards and panels throughout the studio for optimal recording acoustics. Because these sound boards cover a majority of the walls and ceiling, some are wrapped in fabric to soften their look.

keyboard, something he says helps him change his perspective when writing. There is a control room for the abundance of technology required to produce a record, a kitchenette bursting with color, and three individual sound proofed rooms for other musicians to record in tandem while Mark plays. “There’s an energy from rock n’ roll music.

One of Mark’s favorite spaces in the studio is the daybed he had installed inside the tech room
for yet another place to keep his perspective in motion. His golden retrievers, Riggins and Rosie don’t mind it either; you will often find them snuggled up next to Mark as he works on his music, playing guitar and songwriting. “I still have the same excitement about creating new things like I did when I was eighteen,” he says.
Mark’s next big design project includes a full renovation of his primary residence with modern updates and the same New England cottage charm. He hopes to share the completed remodel with Charleston Home + Design readers in the future.
