Written by Paige Taylor | Photography by Ebony Ellis

for the Lowcountry. With a combined twenty years of industry experience, they merged forces in October 2021.

How did Watsky & Wieters Construction begin?

What kinds of projects do you specialize in?

David: We both have been in this industry for so long. Plus, we have been friends for almost nine years. Forest and I would speak often about our perspectives on different projects or anything business related, and one day Forest suggested that we should combine our expertise and work together.

David: We do large scale projects like

What are some secrets to success? Forest: It’s important to us that we create a friendship with the homeowners. We understand that we are imposing in a person’s home, so providing attention to details or doing what we say we are going to do is crucial. We want our clients to feel like we are family and know that we are going to take care of their home through the building process. 70 • CH+D • Summer 2022

high-end kitchens, baths, flooring, and new additions. Serving from Goose Creek to Kiawah and everywhere in between. When we go somewhere, we like to spend time with the homeowners. We like to find out what they want and what their expectations are. At the end of the day, our clients are going to get great service, great communication, and follow through with our business.

What makes your partnership unique? Forest: Communication has been the key to our success. We tag-team different projects, cover as many areas

as possible in the Lowcountry, and we keep each other accountable to produce the best project outcomes.

Where do you all see Watsky & Wieters Construction in the future? David: We hold ourselves to highstandards and expect our clientele to remain happy with our services. With that being said, we hope to expand our business and continue to thrive alongside as one of the top in our industry. Recycled Renovations Chat with Elizabeth and Chris Fisher, owners of GlassEco Surfaces, for the rundown on a variety of sustainable, personalized solid surface countertop combinations for indoors and out.

Elizabeth Said:

Chris Said:

I prefer glass because there are so many choices of color, sizes, and combinations. You can be really vibrant and fun or subtle and sophisticated.

Recycled Glass or Oyster Shell Countertops?

I like oyster shell because it’s all-natural, easy to decorate, and really brings a coastal feeling indoors.

Resin-based has a lot more flexibility in base colors and is durable and stain-resistant, perfect for indoor kitchens or bathrooms.

Resin-based or Concrete Surface Countertops?

I like concrete because it is perfect for outdoor kitchens and bars. You can have fun with it and change the different colors mixed in and it is easy to maintain year-round.

I like the large chunks in equal percentages in a design with bold colors because it really makes a statement.

Favorite Terrazzo Style Glass Combination?

I like all mixed sizes with shells put together because it is more subtle but still enhances the look of its surroundings.

Smaller-sized pieces of recycled glass can be used as a complement to any existing tile or they can be used as a focal point. You can really take the design in any direction with this size.

Favorite Material For Shower Walls?

Crushed mirror glass walls because it is unique and reflects the natural light in a really beautiful way. It makes any shower feel more luxurious.

The dining room features her own custom table cloth and chair covers that can be easily swapped for a new look anytime. Turkish rug runners from the shop give the space color and personality and make the white linens pop.

When she began decorating the sunroom in her home, she challenged herself to work with the pieces she already had. She luckily can customize her fabrics and accessories at her shop where she creates new ideas every day. Jean also likes incorporating new pieces for a mixture of creativity and inspiration. All of the furniture has been sourced from one of her distributors or built by her husband, John Peters of Premier Construction.

The outdoor space came together naturally and is her family’s favorite place to relax. Custom pillows and cushions from her workroom add comfort and style. Everyone in her home can agree on how peaceful it is. There is ample seating for friends and family and rattan accessories including a bar cart for refreshments. Here, you can find them enjoying a cold drink, a good book, or just taking a moment to enjoy one another’s company. “We’re always designing and working on our businesses. Whether it’s brainstorming business ideas together or brainstorming new landscaping ideas, we’re always creating, inspiring one another, and improving on our home or in the showroom and workroom,” she tells us.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON

(top) Attention to detail is a building block for Marine Canvas of Charleston.

Artisan for Land & Sea Outdoorsman, James Steedley became an entrepreneur fabricating custom canvas for boats and outdoor spaces.

The Craftsman As a Charleston native, James grew up around the ocean. “My office has always been on the water, on my boat,” he says. After serving in the Marine Corps, James returned to the Lowcountry with his family. Knowing that Charleston is a port town, James opened Marine Canvas of Charleston to craft upholstered boats, fabricated enclosures, and more for outdoor patios. “I love working with my hands. Creating something from nothing truly fuels my creative side,” he says.

His Process When James meets with a client, he provides a detailed breakdown of pricing including the fabric, the vinyl, the snaps, and the thread. He says, “I want every client to understand that this is a trade craft, a skill set. Not everyone can do this.” Back at his Mount Pleasant warehouse, his crew marks the patterns, cuts the fabric, and then sews the completed design. Marine Canvas of Charleston crafts upholstered seats and full boat covers, as well as window enclosures ranging from clear vinyl to acrylic.

The Craftsman “We concern ourselves more with the quality of the product, versus the completion rate. If a project takes a little longer to finish, then so be it. We will never release a project that we are not proud of,” James explains. For more information, call Marine Canvas of Charleston at (843) 608-9644 or visit marinecanvascharleston.com.

INDUSTRY PROFILES • Building Blocks

BUILDER:

Kevin Kalman KALMAN CONSTRUCTION

How did you get started in this industry? My dad was a builder in Nantucket, Massachusetts, so I grew up sweeping floors and going on jobs when I was five. Growing up we didn’t really go on family vacations, instead, when we were on school breaks we just went to work with my dad at different project locations.

What makes Kalman Construction unique? A few things set us apart. We have our own workers on staff, so we don’t have to subcontract as much. This is the way I learned the business. My dad had his own crew of guys, and he didn’t have to worry if the subcontractors would or would not show. We have the same thing. When I moved my family to Charleston from Nantucket, it seemed like everyone was a subcontractor and, in some cases, not to the betterment of a craft. Another thing that sets us apart is that we own a plumbing, electrical, and HVAC company, along with Kalman Construction, so we do all that in-house.

What are some of the custom features incorporated into this project? In this house, there are some features that are more unique than others I have done in the past. We crafted the kitchen island and cabinetry from rough lumber which was salvaged from the roof system of the old house model. The trough sinks are a bit more utilitarian than most sinks; there are no vanities in this house. We installed a lot of older style fixtures both plumbing and lighting throughout the home.

For more information call Kalman Construction at (843) 856-0515 or visit kalmanconstruction.com.

ARCHETYPE:

Jodi Crosby C R O S BY C R E AT I O N S H O M E D E S I G N S

How did you get started in this industry? I've wanted to do this since I was thirteen years old. I started taking drafting classes in high school and I worked for an engineering firm and a big tract builder. In 2008, I took a risk and created my own business from the ground up; during one of the worst economies, I have ever known in my adult life. Fourteen years later, we are going strong.

What makes this home design unique? This home design is especially unique for the area because we are on a piece of property that is very atypical for the neighborhood. There is a beautiful view of the saltwater pond, golf course and surrounding creeks, so it’s panoramic from one side of the house to the other. The lot itself is nestled down a very long driveway, which provides privacy and is a hidden secret to the neighborhood. CopeGrand took my designs and built a beautiful home.

What is your design method for each client? With every project, there is a collaboration between Crosby Creations, the builder, and the homeowners. Allowing the design to be fluid enough to turn into what it is today, was so much fun. We create 3D renderings, which provides a visual aid to help our clients see their home as its being designed.

What can clients expect when working with Crosby Creations Home Designs? "We are a full-service residential design firm specializing in custom home and renovation design. We will research, design and provide the contacts needed to bring your project to fruition. Our clients can expect a high level of professionalism and to have fun taking part in their custom home or renovation design." For more information, call Crosby Creations Home Designs at (843) 998-0505 or visit crosby-creations.com.

INTERIOR DESIGNER:

Annie Gallagher

ANNIE GALLAGHER INTERIORS

What inspired you to be an interior designer? From a young age I have been heavily influenced by the arts. Creating is something that comes very naturally to me, and I love the challenges it brings. I love the flow of creating and how it allows me to shut off any distractions to focus on the art of the design. Home is such an important sanctuary and should be a place of comfort that allows you to live your best life.

What inspired the design for this home? My client is a yoga enthusiast as well as a health & wellness coach. Her vibes are so organic and free flowing which inspired me to bring in an earth tone color palette paired with artisanal global textiles, rugs and accents.

Why was it beneficial for the homeowner to work with you? When I first met my client, she really wanted to add wallpaper into her home and ironically, I had been working on my textile line and she genuinely loved it. It was truly meant to be. I must have shown her hundreds of other papers to make sure, but she really believed in my work and that was such a rewarding part of this project. For someone to adore what I’ve created is a very humbling experience.

What is unique about this home's interior design? This home has rooms, which is so refreshing when so many homes today seem to have less walls and wide-open rectangular spaces. The movement of the home is so natural and fluid. You just feel immediate Zen when you walk through the front door. Something we all need more of.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Reimagined Master Bath See how custom cabinetry converted this dated bathroom from drab to fab and created functional space with savvy storage spots for essentials.

The Setting: This bathroom was built in the 1950s, and as one can imagine, was quite small. The now unconventional layout created quite the challenge for the homeowners to use the space in tandem. There was very little room to work with in terms of storing their bathroom belongings.

The Problem: The homeowners felt cramped in the existing bathroom layout and had a hard time organizing their belongings with efficiency. It seemed that the current storage space was impossible to keep clear of clutter because of how small the original cabinets and drawers were. The outdated layout made it hard to make the most of it.

The Solution: They hired Charleston Cabinets who had previously redone their kitchen cabinets. A trusted design and installation team was a must when it came to this project. The bathroom was renewed with custom KraftMaid cabinetry in Lagoon Blue with recessed doors. All In a Day’s Work A day in the life of Vairon Ocampo, owner of Oli & Peter Professional Epoxy, LLC, a company that creates metallic marble-looking floors all over Charleston. People often opt for epoxy flooring in their kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor living spaces.

8:00am

11:00am

2:00pm

Vairon begins the day by hooking up his trailer and gathering the paint and materials for the two separate jobs he is working on. Different paints and charcoal colors must be created for each unique project, especially his most popular style, a marble metallic.

After the initial base layer of resin hardens, it is buffed and dried clean with alcohol. Now it’s time to pour the paint. He starts with one color at a time, layer by layer, carefully pouring in the patterns of his designs before using his spreading roller. The last step for this project today is to add in the metallic veins with paint made with real metal for a genuine look.

A trip to the supply store allows him to stock back up on base, resin, and color pigments that he needs to hand mix the paint for the following day.

9:00am To prep the base layer for the first job of the day, he cleans the floor well with alcohol before pouring a layer of glue and resin all over before smoothing with his tool. He applies another layer of resin and adds a vapor barrier.

12:00pm

10:00am

1:00pm

Because it takes 24-38 hours for each layer to dry, Vairon heads on to his next project out in Awendaw. They too have asked for a marble epoxy floor but in different colors. He stops to mix the paint and charcoal color so it is ready for a marbling pour. The base layer has dried at this site for nearly two days and is ready for buffing. 90 • CH+D • Summer 2022

Now that step three is complete, he will wait two days before completing the final step of clear resin that seals and shines the floor for ten-year durability, guaranteed.

After lunch, he takes time to call those who have sent in inquiries to his email and asks about the existing floor conditions to determine a starting point. For more information, call Oli & Peter Professional Epoxy, LLC at (843) 499-5939 or visit oliandpeter.com.

3:00pm Once laid, the resin begins to dry and harden almost immediately so he makes sure to take the time to clean his tools daily.

4:00pm He checks on the final third step for a home he did in North Charleston to ensure the top coat dried properly and his clients are satisfied with their new custom epoxy flooring.

5:00pm He calls his crew to schedule some jobs for the following week and finally heads home to his dogs, Bella and Odie.

When is it necessary to prime a surface and when is it not?

The substrate needs to be clean, dull, and dry no matter what you are painting. A really good rule of thumb is as long as you have a water-based coating on the wall and you’re just doing a simple color change, it’s not necessary to use a primer. If it is a dramatic color change like bright red to a neutral color, priming is important for complete coverage and color payoff. If you are dealing with wallpaper, applying a primer makes it an easy process to paint right over.

What should you know before purchasing a golf cart?

You can go out and buy a really fancy golf cart and it will look and drive like a golf cart. The eNVy Neighborhood Vehicle is different because it drives just like your car. It was built fresh from the seat down. It has independent suspension, disc brakes, and power steering. You can even put a tow hitch on it for a trailer. Even though it’s electric and silent like most electric golf carts, it’s definitely not just a golf cart. It is truly a step above.

What is Ro Sham Beaux best known for?

Our beaded light fixtures and chandeliers. We actually hand make them here locally and sell them nationwide. That’s kind of what put us on the map. Our beaded fixtures are able to be customized in any color combination with any number of beads made from various sustainable materials; my favorites are made of recycled Coke bottles. If you are interested in creating your own beaded chandelier, we can help walk you through the custom design process and go over bead samples at our Charleston showroom at 17 State Street.

What steps would you take if you were looking to hire a builder?

When searching for a builder, you’ll want to look at their online portfolio first. Next, spend time with that builder and interview them. You want to make sure you share a connection because you will be working together for a year or longer. The builder needs to understand your vision, so open communication is a crucial part of the process. Always ask to see their work in progress and call their references.

aking a statement with a home can be done in several different ways; from the architecture to the lighting, this waterfront dwelling makes many. Two years ago, the homeowners began the building process with JacksonBuilt Custom Homes, knowing they wanted to have many “Wow!” moments throughout, including a modern feel with the use of brass detailing. Partnering with interior designer, Joy Lang for this project, JacksonBuilt enlisted the help of lighting specialist, Tricia Hanson of Lowcountry Lighting Studio. “I’ve worked with JacksonBuilt for many years, so I was excited to do the lighting for such a phenomenal house,” she says. Collaborating with Joy Lang and the homeowners, Tricia remembers spending many nights flipping through catalogs and brainstorming ideas with them. “This house is absolutely gorgeous, so being able to

provide lighting that didn’t overwhelm the other elements of the home, yet matched the same energy was important,” Tricia explains. The open floor plan connects the foyer, the kitchen, the dining area, and the living room. Cohesiveness is key when designing for different spaces that are in close proximity. She tells us, “We were able to create a balanced flow throughout the main areas by placing fixtures that came from the same manufacturer, so they had the same brass.” Tricia refers to the kitchen as the inspiration room. It was the first space designed by Lowcountry Lighting Studio and became the blueprint for the rest of the home. “I knew the homeowners were comfortable making a statement,” she states. Two large, white and brass, geometric chandeliers were placed above the kitchen island. The tall ceilings allowed for larger fixtures to be hung, while

the brass finish tied the entire kitchen together. “We wanted to create a moment that would just take your breath away,” says Tricia. Another fantastic feature of the kitchen is the back lit marble backsplash behind the cooktop, which was inspired by a restaurant the homeowner’s love. Sheets of LED lights were placed in between the opaque marble slabs, allowing light to shine through, adding another surprise to this already show-stopping kitchen. Although this house is very modern with clean straight

lines, Tricia made sure to leave something unexpected in each room she helped design with light. An abstract chandelier with twelve LED lights, glass casings, and a high-quality brass finish was placed above the dining room table. “At night, this fixture along with the ones placed in the kitchen will light this house up, especially when entertaining guests,” tells Tricia. The downstairs powder room was designed a bit differently than the other spaces. An edgy black and white wallpaper along with snake cabinet handles gives a very moody vibe. match the feel of the room. “Since no one is using the powder room to “get ready”, I felt it was the perfect time to pivot and place darker, low light fixtures in here,” she explains. As a final statement, a New York handmade pendant with wood detailing was placed in the foyer and Buster & Punch hardware handles were placed on the game room doors which Lowcountry Lighting Studio is the exclusive dealer for in Charleston. “Joy Lang had such a great vision for this home, and I felt completely supported by her and JacksonBuilt when presenting my ideas for each space. We are so proud of what this house has become,” Tricia adds. ✴

his oceanfront property on Isle of Palms was purchased for its potential. The existing house hadn’t been well maintained, thus falling into disrepair. This didn’t give the homeowners much to work with in terms of a renovation. Instead, they opted for a completely fresh starting point for the opportunity to custom-build their home just as they imagined. The homeowners called on a trusted local builder, Cy Goforth of Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes, to completely demolish the existing house and all of its underground infrastructure to prepare for their new construction. Cy then created a spectacularly innovative

design with the help of Vinyet Architecture to take full advantage of the ocean views and maximize the family’s living space. Cy also contracted local interior designer, Shay Patterson of Riverside Designers to help establish the home's aesthetic and decor direction. Shay mentions that for this project she went for a "coastal spin on the homeowner's taste of bold and traditional patterns with coastal finishes, fixtures, and textures to create a casual yet refined oceanfront aesthetic." large wraparound porches and the large windows and glass doors that overlook the ocean. Custom long-length European white oak flooring was installed throughout the home and amplifies natural light for a coastal ambiance in every corner. Each room in the home features custom details built with reclaimed wood from Encore Reclaimed Lumber and Millwork to accent the walls and ceilings. Cy tells us, “every single room features its own custom woodwork for a uniquely individual touch no matter where you are.” Because this lot is adjacent to the ocean, the construction team took into consideration the corrosive nature of salt, humidity, and high winds that work against the exterior of a home. For longterm defense, optimal building materials from 84 Lumber were used in addition to ABC and Coastal Metal Roofing Supplies. The roof is a mechanically seamed aluminum multi-pitched roof that can withstand the toughest storms. Additional protection in the form of Bahama shutters were installed by Windward Shutters, LLC and elevated the home’s curb appeal. All of these efforts are made for improved durability and ease of maintenance for the homeowners in the future. ✴ For more information, call Lowcountry Premier Custom Homes at (843) 881-3930 or visit lowcountrypremiercustomhomes.com. Elevated Island Living

This real estate company has redefined what it means to sell luxury homes around Charleston to bring families the best value in the purchase of their dream home.

W

hen Island House Real Estate hit the scene in 2018, broker in charge and agent, Tricia Peterson, took an innovative approach to the Charleston housing market and it caught wind quickly. What sets her company apart is the "find, remodel, and sell" approach they take to many of the homes they list. Her team makes a point to add value and functionality to homes that otherwise would require new buyers to commit to planning a remodel themselves. Instead, Tricia secures the homes she knows her clients want and transforms them with the help of Maverick Construction and Embellish Interiors for a turnkey experience for buyers in their new luxury homes. She understands the needs of families in the Charleston area who want space to grow and gather and in a place

they can feel good about. Buyers never have to worry about last minute or poorly executed improvements made just before closing and can have confidence in a home that has been refreshed and remodeled to its full potential. The homes she and her team work on don’t last on the market long and they are always open to new purchases. It is important to point out, however, that this is not the same as when an independent buyer “flips” a home. This is proper, professional, and informed work that adds abundant and long-lasting value to a luxury home. They aren’t just painting the walls and cabinets like renovations seen at a lower price point. Island House goes above and beyond for complete transformations.

In the living room, an accent wall fireplace was added along with a natural wood mantel and built-in bookshelves on either side. This specific renovation included adding luxury details like a coffered ceiling with white shiplap in the dining room, and a new transitional style chandelier from Lowcountry Lighting Studio. In fact, every light fixture in the home was replaced which makes a big impact on the overall look. little over a year ago, homeowners Adrianne and James Betz moved into their Mount Pleasant dream home to find it was lacking one thing. A pool! Having an outdoor space to relax and chat with family and friends is a sure way to make life more enjoyable and their existing yard with sod just wasn’t cutting it. The Betz family called on Aquatica Pools and Spas, Charleston's only full service pool company to make their backyard feel like a tropical destination at all times. Visually, Adrianne wanted an airy and cool space built with natural

materials. She pictured something luxurious and coastal with relaxing water features and a pool deck that resembled a sandy beach. “I wanted it to feel like a vacation every time we stepped outside,” Adrianne shares. The longest part of the process was waiting for the building permit. Once ground breaking was approved by the city, Aquatica was able to transform the backyard in a month's time with no material wait times. This is thanks to the company's in-house inventory which allows for fast and efficient full service builds from start to finish.

The pool was built on a bit of elevated land which allowed for one end to sit at ground level and the other to follow a gradual decline in depth. For this part of the lowland, a sun ledge creates a seamless transition and a safe space for the kids to play in shallow water. Two deck jets create graceful water archways over the water and aid in a peaceful sound that helps to drown out any neighborhood noise. This is the perfect addition for those looking to escape the noise of daily buzz. In addition to a new pool, the home’s porch was extended to connect the shellstone pool deck and newly built cabana for an open space to gather and entertain. Adrianne furnished the space with “coastarondack” pool chairs by Bask Outside Furniture as well as an outdoor sofa, chairs, and fire table from Outer Furniture. The family opted to cover the remaining ground in synthetic turf grass for a year-round green lawn and a soft place for bare feet. It also prevents their dog from tracking in any dirt after a game of fetch. Together, these elements create a resort oasis right at home. ✴

hen homeowners are in the beginning stages of building their home, having as many decisions made beforehand can make the entire process a more enjoyable experience. Home experts of all trades agree that knowing what you want from the start is crucial. From the type of flooring, the backsplash, the lighting fixtures, to the color palates, the hardware, and the cabinets. Husband and wife duo, Kenneth and Tracy Sullivan of Sullivan Custom Cabinets were approached by the homeowners after receiving a recommendation from their builder,

It was a very easy collaboration,” says Tracy. Once production began, the team had to work quickly but efficiently, as there was an American bald eagle that had built its nest in a tree in the backyard. Due to construction permit laws, any exterior construction within six hundred feet of the eagle’s nest had to be completed by

Richard describes Motif as “a boutique interior design concierge service,” assisting clients with furnishings, accessories, window treatments, and more. “When I learned the new homeowners were interested in working with Motif, I immediately wanted to find out what their passions were,” says Kristine Russell, JacksonBuilt's Director of Design. After spending time with the clients and learning that they had a love of outdoor exploration, as well as photography, Kristine began drawing up ideas. “My initial design direction was very organic, to bring the outside in. Using natural colors and textures; like a driftwood finish, the golden hues of the feather grass, blues of the river,” Kristine describes. After the homeowner shared his photography from a recent safari in South Africa, Kristine found the perfect fit for their artwork and reached out to the very talented photographer, Benjamin Walls. “Once I viewed Benjamin’s work, I knew immediately that his five-piece

It was then that Kristine wanted to get creative and incorporate some of the homeowner’s own photos in the interior. With the help of her father, Alan Hailston, whom is also a well-known photographer, they worked together to alter and create some wonderful pieces, offering up quite a collection. Along with curated artwork, Motif also provided furnishings for this new home. Different textures and styles allowed for an edgier vibe in some spaces and a softer vibe in others yet keeping a very cohesive flow throughout. “For me, it’s all about bringing out the best of people in my designs. Restroom Restoration This master bathroom needed a refresh after fourteen years of consistent use. Instead of a complete renovation, the homeowners opted to work with restoration professionals who made it look and feel brand-new in just two days.

B

ecause bathrooms are small areas with high levels of humidity, hard water stains and the occasional collection of mold and mildew are not uncommon. This Mount Pleasant home was experiencing this in the grout between their bathroom tiles on top of a dulling travertine countertop. One of the quickest and most costeffective ways to restore a space like this is to reseal the exposed surfaces like grout and hone or polish stone countertops back to their original gloss. These homeowners

122 • CH+D • Summer 2022

hired grout and stone resurfacing company, Sir Grout of The Lowcountry, after reading their rave reviews online and were delighted to have the job begin just two weeks after they were quoted. Dan Lundstedt, of Sir Grout of The Lowcountry explains, "it’s best to restore what you have instead of replacing it. Most people who completely tear apart a bathroom for a renovation don’t realize the fast and dramatic results of our work that could have saved them thousands of dollars.” Dan Lundstedt of Sir Grout of The Lowcountry

This renewal process begins by steam cleaning the tile floors and shower with a ph-balanced solution before resealing the grout and filling any cracks to prevent potential water damage. Making sure the new seal is watertight is important for longevity and easy maintenance once the job is done. Because the shower seal takes some time to dry, this was the time to resurface their travertine countertops in the bathroom. At a micro level, there are tons of pores in natural stone countertops

that collect dirt and oil even when cleaned regularly, making it a discouraging task over time. Sir Grout of The Lowcountry is able to resurface and reseal countertops to remove years of damage caused by general wear and tear. It begins with the same steam cleaning process and ends with a diamond buff of varying grit to eventually polish the stone back to its original shine. After stains and scratches are removed, a seal fills the pores of the stone for added stain and scratch resistance and a

much easier clean moving forward. The homeowner notes, “the bathroom looks brand-new and even better than it did fourteen years ago when we built it.” ✴ For more information, call Sir Grout of The Lowcountry at (843) 640-5544 or visit sirgroutlowcountry.com.

Total Garden Transformation A professional plan of action and design was necessary to get this two-acre lot pruned to perfection, and it needed a lot more than just plants.

W

hat is now a peaceful and versatile outdoor living space at this Johns Island home once was a neglected muddy mess. The homeowners called on landscape designer, Linda Greenberg of Linda Greenberg Landscape and Design for her extensive garden landscape portfolio and over twenty years of experience. Linda and her team were involved in the two-acre space from concept to completion. “At one point in the initial phase, I was literally up to mid-calf in mud after a strong rain. I knew that the functional aspects of the design were top priority,” Linda tells us.

124 • CH+D • Summer 2022

She first created a plan to solve the grading and drainage issues and guide runoff water to a nearby river. With the help of Todd Sumner Irrigation, they installed meandering rock river beds that followed a natural shape and an irrigation system for over one-acre of new Zoysia sod. The homeowners enjoy watching their grandchildren play outside, so she designed a bright red bridge over the river rocks that leads to the lined playground with kid-friendly rubber mulch. The second task involved removing a dilapidated deck that was off the ground about fifteen feet. With the help of Distinct Builders, LLC Linda designed a spacious screen porch that

looks out over the entire garden. The hardscape elements beyond the porch were installed by E & A Hardscapes with a combination of rustic travertine, bluestone pavers, and brick she hand-selected. A spectacular putting green was also installed for family fun and golf practice. The homeowner remarks how it surely adds years to her husband’s life with how much time he spends out there. One of Linda’s favorite parts of her job is creating spaces people look forward to spending time in every day. She finished the porch and patio space by sourcing elegant outdoor furniture pieces from Outside Is In, Restoration Hardware, and Elizabeth Stuart Design. Part of a complete garden includes stellar water features like birdbaths and fountains. These elements create a lovely ambiance and water sounds that attract pollinators and birds. The many garden rooms are surrounded by a variety of seasonal greenery and florals for consistent pops of color throughout the year. Finishing touches like outdoor lighting are also central to the overall beauty of a garden. Installed by A A Wortman, LLC, Linda designed grapevine-lit balls to hang among the Spanish moss on the large oak tree for a gorgeous flowing centerpiece at night.

Furnishings on Folly To keep a rental property booked and busy, guests need clean and comfortable furniture. Thanks to the selections from Atlantic Bedding & Furniture, this Folly Beach property is a visitor favorite.

I

t’s a smart move to furnish a rental property with durable, high-quality, and affordable pieces when considering guest traffic as well as wear and tear. Owner of “The Lookout”, an Airbnb on Folly Beach, worked with the owner of Atlantic Bedding & Furniture, Todd Tononi, to quickly and completely furnish his entire waterfront property shortly after purchase. To make it a quick and easy process, especially for rental properties, Todd provides his customers with complete, in-stock furniture collections for every

type of living space. This makes for a quick selection process and immediate staging. Unlike other suppliers, Atlantic Bedding & Furniture operates with multiple distribution centers around Charleston that house thousands of pieces ready to sell and deliver for a fast turnaround. They rarely experience shipping delays because most products are already in-stock at one of their locations. This was exactly what the owner of this rental was looking for and something many customers love about Todd’s company. “I was able to get what I needed for the entire house delivered and set up without waiting

on shipments. This allowed me to start renting to guests immediately,” the property owner remarks. In just one week, every room in “The Lookout” was thoughtfully furnished and ready for renters. Understanding that this would be quite the space for celebration, whether it be a bachelorette bash or graduation party, easy to clean furniture fabrics were important. The owner of the property chose many pieces from the Seaside furniture collection for the living and dining spaces because it features a woven fabric that can be easily spot cleaned and dried quickly for new guest turnaround. These are also quite large pieces that can seat many guests. In the sunroom, a large dining table sits overlooking the water and with easy access to the pool deck, everyone can enjoy themselves with enough space.

bedroom set is one of the most popular for a one-and-done design that works in any setting. (bottom right) The upstairs office features the Seaside sleeper sofa for any additional guests.

The variety of furniture pieces at Atlantic Bedding & Furniture allowed for multiple domains and spaces to engage. An entertainment space complete with movie theater furniture to match created an extra amenity out of a formal dining room and a desk and sofa are tucked upstairs in the hallway for remote work travelers. An extra sofa sits in an upstairs common area with a coffee table and TV. A breakfast nook provides a little more private dining space, or the perfect kid’s table. The bedroom sets are from the popular Farmhouse collection, great for guest bedrooms because of the stylish simplicity and storage options in the dressers and side table drawers. The sofas in the bedrooms also double as full-size beds, allowing this space to sleep double the amount of guests. Book a staycation at “The Lookout” for your next grand get-together. ✴

Crystal Clear Water The new homeowners of this Mount Pleasant residence wanted to purify their water source before they ever moved in.

W

hether you are taking a bath, drinking a glass of water, or washing your clothes, the quality of the water flowing through your pipes at home is important to consider. There are potential harmful contaminants that can affect how water tastes, smells, and even feels. For the new owners of this older Mount Pleasant house, this became a huge concern. Coming from a surgical background, the homeowners wanted a top-of-the-line water filtration system to service their entire home providing them with the cleanest, healthiest water to consume.

132 • CH+D • Summer 2022

They called upon Mark Latini and the experts at Advanced Water Systems for help. “These homeowners wanted the best alkaline water they could get. So, we installed a whole house purification system, including a particulate filter to capture debris from inside the water, a chemical filter tank to remove chlorine and ammonia, a reverse osmosis system to completely treat and purify the water, and an atmospheric tank which holds 500 gallons of water to supply the demand for the entire house,” Mark explains. Once the homeowners turn on their

faucets, water from inside the atmospheric tank will be pulled to an alkaline filter and then into a polishing filter, providing the house with 100% pure alkaline water. The homeowners had not yet to move into this home, but with the water system already installed, the purification system had begun. Changing the once clear filter to a golden yellow. “You would be shocked by the state of some of these filters after a few months or even years. All our filters will turn colors within a month or so of being installed. Without proper water filtration people are basically consuming and bathing in dirty water,” Mark states. While this filtration line is one of their most intricate products, Advanced Water Systems offers different systems to fit different needs. Mark tells us, “We have a lot of homeowners who just have a unit under their sink used for drinking water and cooking. We have some who just want our water softener product to help with their skin.” Experiencing itchy skin or dry hair is a sign of showering with hard water. Other indicators of a poor water supply are if it looks cloudy, or if there are stains on your dinnerware. Having a water filtration system in your home it will not only improve the quality of the water but will also improve the way you feel after consuming it. ✴

A Fashionista’s Favorite A dream closet filled with surprise elements like hidden mirrors and deceivingly long wardrobe spaces is one of many reasons why this Charleston homeowner is dressing happy.

B

efore Simone Ansley and her family began building their new waterfront home, she knew she wanted a fantastic walk-in closet, suitable for all her glamorous gowns, shoes, handbags, and accessories. After doing research of her own, Simone walked into Inspired Closets and spoke with owner and designer, Robert Allen. “She showed me her ideas and then we discussed the inventory of what would go in her closet, to take everything into account,” Robert explains. Simone tells us, “I wanted to have closets within my closets, almost

boutique style. Since this space would be shared with my husband, I wanted to have functionality; to be able to move around the space without feeling crammed.” Using 3D design programming, Robert created the custom closet blueprint of what the space would look like beforehand. “I am a very visual person, so virtually walking around the space, and making adjustments to his model was a game changer for me,” Simone says. Once a design was agreed upon, Robert sent his designs to the Inspired Closet warehouse where the closet features get cut,

measured, and built in-house. “Before our products ever make it to their forever home, we do a full inspection to make sure there aren’t any faults or mistakes,” states Robert. Total installation for Simone’s new closet took two days, with no hiccups. “When you are building a new house, and you have several different vendors, it’s expected that there will be issues along the way. However, Robert and his team, were the only vendor that had a seamless installation,” Simone describes. Robert accredits this to his crew of builders and installers, “Our installers take pride in their work. They love what they do, and it shows time and time again. I just can’t say enough about how great they are at their job.” For Simone and her husband, Inspired Closets created a four-wall wardrobe space equipped with open shelving and hanging areas, a shoe wall, two mini-closets both with extended space inside to add a little more storage space, remote controlled lighting, a

full-length mirror that slides in and out of the wall, and a keyless magnetic jewelry drawer. “When I came to Robert and his team with the idea to have hidden closet space inside the smaller closets, he was able to create this with no problem. Among the variety of styles, colors, and the different amenities to choose from, along with having his design match my needs, it was a no-brainer to work with him,” Simone adds. Inspired Closets has been in business for twenty-two years and has no plans of slowing down. “I started out as an installer and then took over the business several years later. My favorite part after all this time, is working with clients like Simone, and bringing their dream closets to life,” Robert says.✴ For more information, call Inspired Closets at (843) 557-1900 or visit inspiredclosets.com.

Modern Makeover for Aging Pipes The experts at Carolina Relining Solutions are giving Lowcountry pipes and sewer systems a well-deserved upgrade using top-of-the-line technology and equipment.

P

roper maintenance of the sewer system under a house is essential to having a functional and safe home. In the past, pipes were created from many different materials like cast iron, clay-based terracotta, and a cardboard-esque material called “orangeburg.” In a historic city like Charleston, older model systems were installed but without the proper care, the pipes will have to be replaced due to decades of rotting, decay, root infiltration, and rust build-up. Enter Warren and Danielle DeHaven, owners of Carolina Relining Solutions. Focused on small scale plumbing in residential properties, this company

136 • CH+D • Summer 2022

will inspect, clean, and “reline” the existing pipeline without digging up the lawn. “Every homeowner, new or old, should request a camera inspection of their pipes during a home inspection,” Warren urges. Identifying the “clean-out” on a project is the first step. A clean-out is a semi-hidden entrance to the plumbing system, usually located in the yard near the home. If the cleanout doesn’t exist, Carolina Relining Solutions will dig a small hole in the ground, usually off to the side of a home, where it won’t be noticed. Next, they perform a camera inspection, then descale the pipe using a chain flail or sandpaper flail to break up any

Danielle and Warren DeHaven of Carolina Relining Solutions

tree roots or debris, followed by a jet of high-pressure water to flush the pipe out. Finally, the team begins the relining process. There are a couple methods for relining pipes: a pull-in-place method or an inversion method. For this home, the system required the inversion method, meant for lining longer sewer pipes. Warren describes, “we filled a raw felt liner with epoxy resin before we placed it inside of an inversion

drum, which is a large round piece of equipment used for transportation. On site, the liner is blown into the old pipe using compressed air. Once the liner is in place, a calibration tube is inflated allowing the new liner to take the shape of the existing pipe. Finally, a UV light train is inserted into the liner to start the curing process.” There is a final camera inspection of the relined pipe to make sure it

is secure. “From start to finish, this process should only take about fortyfive minutes, which is shockingly quick compared to the hours it would take to dig up a deteriorating line and ruin the landscaping or internal flooring in the process,” Danielle says. ✴ For more information, call Carolina Relining Solutions at (843) 300-1505 or visit crscharleston.com.

Built To Last The collaborative design effort on this custom-built Johns Island home resulted in an outcome greater than they imagined with the help of a local building material supplier and their contractors.

his Johns Island home is tucked away in a corner of paradise on an expansive lot overlooking the water. The homeowner designed and built the framework for this home and called on Garth Premak of Maner Builders Supply Co. to turn his vision into a reality. Maner Builders Supply Co. is not only known for its famous fencing; they also take a full-service approach to providing materials and installation services in all areas such as custom glass showers, closets, decking, railing, doors, moldings, shutters, and more. contractors to construct not only beautiful homes but well-made houses. When Garth came to the property nearly fifteen months prior, he began to immediately bounce ideas off of the homeowner who was open to suggestions. He knew he was interested in a modern twist on a southern style but didn’t know where to start. They decided the best way to achieve this look in such a large space was to start with the basics of many southern builds; shaker-style doors, a shiplap fireplace, built-in shelves, oversized molding, and thick trim. This led to a mixed combination of board and batten style walls and wainscoting

in the living and dining areas; a result of active design collaboration and knowledgeable suggestions from Garth. These elements alone created the southern feel the homeowner was looking for and inspired the details in the rest of the home. The space is filled with natural light and its high ceilings are crowned by oversized moulding. The foyer and living room have exceptional poplar wood detail which inspired the team to bring this into the bedrooms and office space as well. The clean and natural look was created with a clear coat over unfinished wood that gives the interior a historic feel though it is brand-new. Maner’s attention to this kind of detail and variety of products allowed for the home to turn out, “better than we could have expected,” says homeowner. Natural hardwood covers both the first and second levels of the home and the large trim and moulding details don’t stop at the stairs; it’s an endless classic Charleston feel. Maner also provided and installed impact-rated doors and windows throughout the home for a view with hurricane protection. In the living room and downstairs bedroom, there is easy sliding door access

to the custom-built porch deck that expands across the length of the home. It features steel rods for contrast though it still maintains a traditional wraparound porch shape. This is another way to add a modern twist to a traditional vision. There is enough space for a clear view of the entire backyard and marsh landscape for relaxing moments morning and night. Steps lead down to the pool area where the Maner Fence division built a pergola and installed long-lasting aluminum fencing. This impressively takes nothing away from the amount of open greenery and provides more safety for growing children without sacrificing tons of yard space. The magic of this home is in the custom layout and its grand details made possible by the team at Maner Builders Supply and their professional, hands-on leader, Garth. He says “the greatest part of my job is seeing the completion of someone’s dream and the confidence in its lasting value because of our contributions.” The homeowners and his family are overjoyed and more pleased with these results than they could have imagined on their own thanks to Maner Builders Supply Co. ✴ For more information, call Maner Builders Supply Co. at (843) 552-0242 or visit maner.com.

Seamless In Stone These homeowners were able to make their outdoor dreams a reality with the help of a local tile company that has a wide range of tile styles and over twenty years of experience.

T

here were big dreams for this backyard from the start. A new pool and lounge area that connected seamlessly from one area to another was the ultimate goal for the homeowners. Not only were they planning on hand-selecting their pool tile, but the same also went for their pavers which needed to extend underneath the elevated porch to achieve the desired look. The homeowners reached out to Buckhannon Tile + Design because they wanted a wide variety of stone options they couldn’t find anywhere else. This project needed over 2,000 square feet of pavers so it was

142 • CH+D • Summer 2022

important they found exactly what they were looking for because there was going to be a lot of it. After some input and guidance from Buckhannon Tile + Design’s representative, Patricia, it was decided the selections for the pool coping and pavers were going to be consistent for the endless lounge space look. It was important to the homeowners that they felt like they were on an island vacation anytime they stepped into their backyard so they decided on 12x24 porcelain Kronos Quartzite tiles in crystal white to mimic a sandy beach. Even better, porcelain

tiles require virtually no maintenance and are stain-resistant, ideal for an outdoor living space like this. The most a homeowner will have to commit to for the upkeep is a light hose down and it looks brand new again. This was extremely appealing for the family with energetic small children to keep up with. Next, it was time to consider decorative accent tiles for the pool. To keep with the oceanside feel, some shade of blue was top of mind for the pool’s waterline. They went for 1x3 Luanda

Bay agate brick in the color ‘Alassio’ with a silk matte finish. The pool was built by Aquatica Pools and Spas, and the shade and texture of the two types of tile worked together beautifully. The combination gave an immediate allure and feel of an island getaway and complements the blue water well. Convenient pool features like submerged seating and a floating table make socializing and entertaining so much easier to enjoy. There’s even an integrated jacuzzi spa that melts into the rest of the pool for an inclusive yet serene spa experience. Altogether, it

feels like a tropical resort right here in Charleston. There is zero separation and a perfect blended lounge space that absolutely measures up to a dream of endless Summer smiles and fun in the sun. ✴ For more information, call Buckhannon Tile + Design at (843) 881-8911 or visit buckhannontd.com.

Luxury Island Living Though this living room has a simplistic color scheme, a closer look reveals layers upon layers of subtle pattern and texture with pops of blue and natural materials that accentuate the furniture in this Johns Island home.

W

hen the new owners of this Kiawah Island home saw the initial listing, they were immediately sold on the expansive waterfront view that spans across the entire living space. With a view so breathtaking, the inside of the home was a bit lackluster in comparison. Nonetheless, the couple knew that with an interior renovation and redesign, this would surely become the vacation home of their dreams. They started by completely gutting the space with the help of Chris Harper of Harper Construction. Walls were removed for a more open floor plan

144 • CH+D • Summer 2022

and a larger kitchen and dining space. With new flooring, appliances, and light fixtures from Rick’s Lighting, the renovation was almost complete. A herringbone tiled fireplace added some cozy charm to the living room and reclaimed wood was used to create the mantle and floating shelves next to it. Once the bones of their home had been restored with modern upgrades, their new coastal cottage needed a fresh interior design. The homeowners teamed up with Seawah Furniture, a full-service furniture company known for their experience and knowledge of custom coastal decor and in-house interior designers.

Mackenzie Alala of Seawah Furniture

Designer, Mackenzie Alala, consulted with the homeowners to identify their goals for the look and feel of the space and helped guide their selection of seating fabrics, and custom draperies by Aubergine Home Collection, Inc. Once the basics were established, Mackenzie was able to create this inviting design layout that encapsulates the energy of coastal living. When suggesting furnishings for a coastal home, she is sure to keep in mind styles and selections that won’t obstruct marsh views or create any distraction from the real eye candy of the home. To create this casual,

coastal feel, serene hues of cream and blue blend together and thoughtful fabrics are used on elegant pieces of comfortable furniture to elevate the family’s everyday living. Seawah’s Revolution fabric is a favorite of Mackenize’s because it is durable and easy to clean; perfect for sofa and chair cushions. For the sofa, she chose the color grande beige. For the dark wicker chair cushions, a dusty light blue shade. A bleached gray wooden armchair with sphere detail legs is positioned on the shorter side of the sectional which helps to enclose the living space amidst an open floor plan. A second seating

area was created by this subtle division that still felt cohesive because of the consistency of the fabric material. The oceanic color palette expands into the artwork on the walls and throughout smaller accent pieces like coffee table books and trinkets, also scouted and styled by Mackenzie. This uncomplicated color scheme makes the space feel light and relaxed. The mix of various wood tones, beige, and blue, created the seaside feeling of relaxation the homeowners were looking for. ✴ For more information, call Seawah Furniture at (843) 212-5110 or visit their website at seawahfurniture.com.

(above left) Andrea used pops of color next to natural wood accents to create a vibrant, yet sophisticated place for her family to dine. (above right) A mixture of color blocking and patterns help define different spaces within the Serrano household.

The Wonder Years Growing up in Orlando, Florida, Andrea always had a passion for fashion; picking outfits and accessories for her mom to wear or playing “store” with her brother. Raised by her Filipino mother and Italian father, cultural appreciation was everything, “My mother passed away when I was ten years old, but I remember being heavily involved with traditional folk dancing and wearing traditional Filipino clothes.” Andrea’s father owned a seafood market, something she says sparked her entrepreneurial spirit, “Both of my parent’s supported me in whatever I wanted to do, but they knew it was fashion." In college, Andrea majored in fashion

in the City, and Prince. After college, Andrea made the move to the Big Apple, interning at Harper’s BAZAAR magazine. “Interning in the photo department, I learned how to produce a photoshoot from the ground up; from booking locations, talent, and photographers, you name it,” she explains. Shortly after, she had the opportunity to work alongside a celebrity stylist, working with clients like Tommy Hilfiger, Levi's, Christie Brinkley, and Shania Twain. "I spent the entire day finding clothes and getting them delivered to my hotel, but when I returned, I had a message saying the shoot had been rescheduled to take place in London. I didn't have access to the type of phone that would have sent that information to me right away, because it didn't exist. I had to make it work," Andrea recalls.

Lavender Luxe Creating a monochromatic theme with layers of lavender details in the master bedroom was the perfect touch for a peaceful night's rest.

As Fate Would Have It Five years after moving to Brooklyn, Andrea met Gustavo at a New Year’s Eve party thrown by her former boss from MTV Latino. He also interned there, yet Andrea never knew him. “Going a step further, Gus also attended the same school and we majored in the same field. He was one of the few men majoring in fashion at this school and I never knew him,” Andrea recalls. It wasn’t until Gustavo moved to New York City a year later and randomly bumped into Andrea at the Urban Outfitters on Broadway. The rest is history. In 2004, after years of working and surviving the bustle of NYC, they wanted to be closer to their family. Charleston had become the home of Andrea’s brother, while Gustavo’s family were nearby in Florida. “We loved the warmth of the city and being outdoors. It was the perfect place to move,” she tells

I fully believe in being aligned with everything I do. If a job, relationship, or hobby doesn’t serve my ultimate goals, then I won’t do it.” Andrea advises that anyone who wants to elevate their style should have a point of reference. Whether personal style or for your home, “learn what you like, and why you like it,” she explains. “Do your research and find pieces that speak to you. Ask for help, especially when renovating your home. When it comes to your clothes, there aren’t any rules anymore. Just find what makes you feel good and embrace it. Confidence is everything,” Andrea urges.

Home is Where the Art is Incorporating art into your home is crucial to any interior design process. Lowcountry artists invite us into their own homes to describe why and how art can be used when designing different spaces.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Chambers Austelle As a South Carolina native and contemporary figurative painter, Chambers Austelle has dedicated her life’s work to the interpretation of how society views women based off of her own upbringing. While the women in her paintings are restricted in their space, Chambers’ use of bright colors brings a sense of hope to the women illustrated. Chambers describes her home’s interior design as "vintage eclectic" with furniture passed down from her family of generations past mixed with the wide range of hanging art seen throughout her two-story downtown abode.

Do you prefer having a gallery wall or a singular statement piece? I like having both. Finding a spot or a few, in your home where you can showcase many pieces of art is great. I have a large gallery wall in my dining room. There is a large statement piece in the center of it, but I wanted to surround it with other pieces that incorporated similar colors or pieces that I don’t want tucked away. However, I do enjoy having pockets throughout my home that have one or two pieces hung. What interior design style best fits your home? Vintage Eclectic; mixing newer, more modern pieces in with family heirlooms and thrifted, vintage finds creates an authentic, homey feel.

What is the most underrated room to place art?

160 • CH+D • Summer 2022

The bathroom. In a spot that harbors a lot of moisture, you will need to have the work properly framed to prevent damage. I like putting the riskier pieces in the bathroom; the pieces you might not ever notice until you are in the bathroom. For more information: Chambers Austelle shopchambersaustelle.com

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Jonathan Green A native to the Lowcountry, Jonathan Green has an outstanding career that spans over forty years. Creating visual masterpieces that depict Southern culture and traditions, he uses his talent to “preserve history so it is not forgotten, but to document the present to guide the future.” Jonathan Green and his partner decorated their downtown Charleston apartment to look and feel like an art gallery; airy and open, so that the art is the star of the room, always.

Where is the best place to paint a mural in a home? I would have to say the ceiling because it doesn’t interfere with the other walls. How would you design a space around a piece of art? Color. It’s all about the colors you choose around your home. Whether to enhance or to blend. I prefer minimalist colors in my furniture and walls, because I have a variety of art and I am always changing them in and out. Plus, I like keeping the gallery feel to my living space because I want the attention to be on the art in my home. What interior design style best fits your home? Artist Neutral.

HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS

Julia Deckman Recalling some of her first memories with a paint brush in hand, Julia Deckman began her art career very early on. Although it took her a while to completely devote herself to her passion and talent, Julia eventually made a name for herself as a top artist in the Lowcountry. Investing time into her craft by experimenting with architectural designs and now color focused studies, Julia’s work is recognizable in any space.

What are the benefits of framing? Framing is an investment that is worth making, when you can. It is expensive, but it is an artform. You can have placeholder frames, until you can invest in quality framing. This is what I do. Framing isn’t always necessary, but it can elevate and transform the piece and the space where it lives.

Photography by Kenny Reed

Where is the best place to paint a mural in a home? This totally depends on the person and the home, but I think a dining room. Especially, if it’s a separate room, creating a mural is a great way to set it apart from your living room or kitchen space. Another great place is a hallway. It can be a cool and unexpected place that makes a huge difference and change the overall feeling of the house. What interior design style best fits your home? I am still trying to figure this out myself. I would say cozy, bohemian chic. My home is always evolving, but comfort, color, and texture are always top priorities. CARRIAGE DOOR

T&T Garage Door Services

If you live on the coast, the best thing to do is leave the garage door open during the storm if you can. This would allow for adequate airflow so that pressure does not build up under the house, and water flows in case of flooding. Mike Cardarelle

POWERFUL GENERATORS Permanent Standby Generators differ from the portable type in that they are wired directly into your electrical system at home. It will constantly monitor the power in your home and automatically turn on in the case of a power interruption.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR HURRICANE PREP

1.

Clear your yard of patio furniture, potted plants, grills, and anything else that could get caught in the wind.

3.

Check your carbon monoxide detector’s battery to prevent CO poisoning.

5.

Establish an evacuation plan should your family need to relocate temporarily.

2. 4.

Fill clean water containers with drinking water in case you lose your water supply.

Know the difference between a hurricane watch and a hurricane warning:

A. B.

A hurricane watch means that weather conditions favor a possible hurricane in a specific area. A hurricane warning means high force winds are expected to result in a hurricane in a specific area.
