Modern Spaces After operating a design company for over a decade and seeing what the Charleston market lacks in the way of modern Scandinavian furnishings, Becky Seel Hoppmann and her mother-in-law, Janice Hoppmann, decided it was time to share their love of modern Scandinavian style furniture with local homeowners by opening Hausful.

What services do you provide to homeowners when they shop with Hausful? As soon as a customer enters our shop, they'll find one-onone assistance along with expert advice for any home design conundrums. We offer free in-store design services and have many clients come in with their room dimensions, which is when we grab our grid paper and start sketching layout options and ideas. Another great alternative for shoppers is our gift registry. What are some key features of your product line? Charleston is a first-class city with first-class home furnishing and design shops throughout the area, but one style in particular has been overlooked—modern Scandinavian. We offer a carefully curated selection of home furnishings and hauswares for every room, like tableware, lighting, modern throws and pillows, and much more; all are researched and sourced from close to 20 different countries: Denmark, Finland, Japan, and Canada just to name a few. Each product we source must align with our core values. We ask ourselves if each product is beautiful, useful, and thoughtful.

How did you get started in the furniture business? I grew up in West Ashley, so after studying design in Savannah, Georgia, I knew I wanted to settle back in Charleston. While I owned a successful brand design company for over ten years, I've also had an appreciation for modern design in all fields. In addition, my mentor and mother-in-law, Janice Hoppmann, who has owned multiple modern home furnishing stores throughout her 50 year career, has been invaluable in the inception of this idea of mine. Do you have any advice for homeowners who are looking to update their style? It's easier than you think! We work with many customers who want to transition to a cleaner, more simplified look—that's what Scandinavian design is all about. With functional design, natural materials, and an everyday comfort, this type of furniture is perfect for a Charleston lifestyle. The Ins and Outs of Pool Design Mike Greer and Chantal DeBreceny of Michael Greer Pools face off about custom pool design.

He Said: He Said: I prefer a salt sanitation system. The quality of the water is fantastic, it’s inexpensive to operate, and you only need to add salt once or twice a year. Although some pools do very well with ozone and UV systems, they require a chlorine backup.

He Said: My favorite accessories are all the different automation and apps that can make pool care so easy. Being able to control all the functions of your custom pool with a touch of a button on your smartphone or remote is so convenient. For example, you can turn on your spa, even when you’re sitting in gridlocked Charleston traffic.

He Said: Personally, I prefer a soft blue because it creates a bohemian feel, which is reminiscent of the Bahamas. The plaster finish of the pool determines the water color so we can design it in a way that recreates the water from our client’s favorite destination and bring that aesthetic to their backyard.

She Said: Type of Sanitizing System?

She Said: Salt sanitation, for sure. Salt systems do their job of sanitizing the pool without the irritation and dryness from traditional chlorine systems. This system also leaves your skin and hair soft and smooth, and helps ease muscle aches and soreness.

She Said: I love fire and water features. These two basic elements create a dramatic and soothing feeling in the evenings and set the tone for both fun and relaxation. Fire bowls, in particular, are easy to operate from a remote and truly enhance the ambiance.

She Said: For me, it depends on the environment and individual pool. I tend to prefer lighter, softer hues with clean lines, but have been astounded by dark, bold water shades as well. It’s as much about the vibes of the house and other surroundings as it is the pool and the water.

HOMEWORK At Home with

Eve & Richard Runnals of Just Additions & Remodeling During the process of flipping their current abode, Eve and Richard Runnals, of Just Additions & Remodeling, realized that this temporary house really started feeling more like home. Instead of finding a new home after the remodel was complete, the couple, along with their dog, Lola, and cat, Bella, decided to put down roots. The dwelling has now been customized to meet their needs and works perfectly for them and their lifestyle. With ample space for hobbies, entertaining, and relaxation, this duo has settled into Mt. Pleasant nicely.

Before the couple moved in, Richard added trim to each room. Crown moulding, windowsills, and window casings were all installed. Later, in the living room, the walls were removed on either side of the fireplace to make the floor plan more open and conducive to their needs. The flow between the living room, kitchen, bar, and outdoor space makes it perfect for entertaining, which is something they both enjoy.

Another remodeling project Richard completed in this space is this built-in bar. He took out half of the closet and installed this wet bar complete with granite countertops, floating shelves, a refrigerator, and a wine fridge. This update is nestled between the kitchen and the dining room making it the perfect place for a bar. Also, since only half of the under-the-staircase closet was used, there is still functional storage space available.

Normally Richard happily kept his fly fishing gear and workbench in the garage, but this home’s spacious nature allowed him to have a spot inside. Richard has organized the room to keep all of his equipment nicely sorted and displayed in an aesthetically pleasing fashion. As a sign of goodwill towards his indoor “man cave,” Eve painted the room herself.

Since Eve & Richard both enjoy cooking, this kitchen received a complete overhaul to help make it brighter and more functional. A 10foot rectangular center island replaced a small, triangular, and impractical one. After a little back and forth on the design of the new piece, Eve and Richard are both pleased with the final product.

CRAFTED IN CHARLESTON The Craftsmen:

Vann Cochran, owner of Salt Wood Co.

The Craft:

Vann, along with his team of craftsmen, design and create custom furniture and doors from reclaimed and new wood, all with natural finishes.

The Backstory:

After two years of building bed swings, Vann decided to branch out and work with a wider variety of reclaimed wood and designs. When he first started out, he drew everything by hand in order to visualize each concept for a new piece of furniture. Now, those drawings are artfully displayed on the wall of his showroom, and technology has taken over the drawing board to streamline the process of each element of fabrication. Because every item that Salt Wood Co. builds is completely custom, they are often commissioned by anyone from homeowners seeking to salvage a memory to corporate offices filling their meeting spaces with one-of-akind pieces.

The Process:

To start the furniture building process, the team at Salt Wood Co. purchases reclaimed wood from a variety of sources. Whether it’s siding from an old barn or a knotty trunk of sinker cypress that is over a century old, it’s all prime for repurposing in Vann’s eyes. After he obtains the materials, it’s off to the workshop. Since not every board of reclaimed wood is ready for immediate repurposing, Vann and his team help it look its best by sanding, treating, and shaping the components to fit the overall design. From there, the guys assemble the furniture, then take it to a separate room to add the stains or natural finishes in a sawdust-free environment. Once the item has been coated and cured properly, it’s ready to fill a stylish office or a homeowner’s space with character and charm for generations to come.

Company: Bennett Hofford Construction Company Credentials: Hank Hofford began his career in Charleston over 35 years ago and has built over 400 of the finest homes along the South Carolina coast. Since 1983, Hank and his team at Bennett Hofford Construction have become synonymous with exceptional high-end construction and renovations.

How were you able to meet the specific needs of the homeowner for this project? This home was constructed in 1989 and the kitchen was outdated and closed off from the rest of the house. Our team relocated several structural walls to create a more modern and open layout. A third story addition was also constructed over an existing, finished library located above the garage. The new addition includes a bunk room and separate bedroom, each with their own bathroom, as well as a custom den for the kids.

What are some of the unique features of this home? The homeowners requested that their personal chef participate in the design and layout of the kitchen for religious purposes. This is the first truly kosher kitchen Bennett Hofford has constructed and it was a fascinating learning experience for our team.

What were some of the challenges of this remodel? For both the kitchen and the third story addition, the biggest challenge was providing appropriate structural support. In the kitchen, we removed several structural walls and reinforced the remaining structural walls. Next we added 35-foot steel columns and a custom framed roof system and floor system to support the new addition without disturbing the cherry paneled library below or the clients enjoyment of the rest of the home.

What advice do you give homeowners? We advise clients to collect all their wish list items for their home, along with their long-term plans for the home, and set realistic budgets and priorities. Then, assemble a qualified team of designers and contractors to work up a plan to accomplish the goals of the project. This results in the most efficient use of time and money, and usually hits the target the first time through the process. Architect: Darryl Cobb, AIA, NCARB Company: Cobb Architects Credentials: Darryl received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and for the last 24 years he has been working in the architectural field. He began his own firm in March of 2000.

What did the homeowners have in mind when they approached you about constructing their James Island home? There were a few specifics. They wanted an open floor plan with some coastal design features. Since the property has fantastic views, they also wished for their home to take advantage of those panoramas and to complement the site. Another request the homeowners made was to build the house as low to the ground as possible with an attached garage. A swimming pool was very important as well.

What were some of the challenges that you overcame while designing this home? Positioning the house correctly on the lot was essential. We worked with FEMA requirements and OCRM critical lines that protect the wetlands and, therefore, in this case, created an oddly-shaped lot. Not to mention there were other building setbacks, height restrictions, and we had to protect several oak trees.

What are some of the unique design elements of this home? Looking back, there were a couple of features that I believe we put together well. The house and garage are positioned under and around several beautiful oak trees. I don't think we cut one tree down. Also, the house is as low to the ground as code would allow. I love that the front of the house (on the water side) terraces down. We also brought grade up around the terraces and some portions of the house. This home melds very well with the site, and it’s not a beach house on stilts, just as the homeowners requested. Company: Yvonne Gregory Interiors Credentials: Yvonne’s journey in design started in Los Angeles over 40 years ago, where she was co-owner of a design and construction company. As a world traveler, she has gathered design inspiration from locations and scenery all around the globe. She relocated to Charleston in 1988 and has worked on projects in New York, Idaho, Florida, and The Netherlands.

What are some of the key design elements of this space? My clients wanted a crisp, minimalist, contemporary feel that capitalized on the open floor plan. It was also important to them that we make it feel comfortable and fashionable, so we chose a gray sofa for a sophisticated and easily styled color and then added a shag rug for warmth and texture.

What is your favorite feature of this home? The size and number of windows provide plenty of natural light, which always makes my job delightful. It also makes the room feel bigger and warmer, so it was fun to create a home with cool colors and fun textures that balances the abundant daylight.

t might be an understatement to say that when Kevin and Nancy Swan purchased their lot on Seabrook Island, they knew it had potential. Poised right at the meeting of Captain Sam’s Creek, the Kiawah River, and the ocean, the scenery from their first story deck and huge second story windows is among the most spectacular in the Lowcountry. The next step to take advantage of their new panoramas was clear: assemble a team of custom home professionals who could capitalize on every aspect of their prime real estate. That’s when the Swans approached

Chris Rose of Christopher Rose Architects. They sought out Chris Rose and his team after a glowing recommendation from a previous client. “We met with a few architects, but we pretty much knew from the start that Chris was the right fit,” explains Kevin. “His style and personality really meshed with our own,” adds Nancy. The trio sat down and did an initial sketch of the home. From there, they worked closely with Julie Keyes, an architect at Christopher Rose Architects, to nail down the details of the design. Since Nancy also has a background in interior de-

sign, she and Julie travailed tirelessly over each feature of the home to cultivate an abode that emulates what Chris calls “Barefoot Elegance.” Around the same time, Nancy and Kevin interviewed with several builders to find the right crew to complete their casually sophisticated domicile. When they met with Matt Byrd of Byrd Builders, something he mentioned piqued their interest. “The Swans selected us as their builder just prior to finalizing the design of the home so that we could help with a term we like to use, ‘value

engineering,’ which means that we go through each aspect of the home and try to find design criteria that we can change without changing the architecture to reduce the cost of the project,” describes Matt. Another trait that both Kevin and Nancy agreed was key was for the builder they chose to be directly involved in the process. Since Byrd Builders only works on a

few projects at a time, Matt makes a point to be on every work site every day. “That was a huge deal for us,” Kevin says. “We wanted someone who would be as invested in our project as we were, and Matt did just that.” Nancy and Kevin knew that it was vital to install the right materials in their coastal home to help it with-

stand the salty elements. That’s where Southern Lumber & Millwork came into the picture. The long-established local company provided all of the custom millwork for the home, as well as the Andersen A-Series impact-rated doors and windows. “When it comes to prepping for a storm, this home is a turnkey package. Then they can stay or you can evacuate, but the home and everything inside will remain safe and dry during the majority of storms. Designer Difference After deciding that remodeling would be a better route than moving, one Mt. Pleasant homeowner enlisted the services of a team of professionals to transform her house into a dream home.

adored family, this homeowner opted to stay put and renovate. After flipping through the pages of an old Charleston Home + Design magazine and being delighted that the interior designer for a particular featured room was local, she reached out to Bobbi Jo Engelby of Domain Inte-

riors & Design to see if Bobbi could put her touch on this home in need of a facelift. Bobbi worked closely with the homeowner throughout the process to help tweak ideas and blend in the homeownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s numerous treasured family heirlooms with more contemporary aspects.

“The thing about working with a designer is, you might have an idea, and you share it with somebody like Bobbi, then they add a suggestion, and suddenly what you have bumps up ten points,” explains the homeowner. Evidence of this notion can be seen throughout the home, like the “Patriot Blue” bar cabinets (instead of navy blue because Bobbi pointed out “navy” can often read as “black”), the custom designed Mirth

Studio tiles, and the recovered living room furniture. The living room is where many of the bigger pieces that Bobbi had to help incorporate into the new design are located. The homeowner’s mother’s Martha Washington chairs, a large area rug, and an antique settee were three key pieces that needed to work. Careful color choices, swapping out surrounding

pieces of furniture, and expert accessorizing generated a look that made the vintage pieces feel right at home with the modern elements of this freshly designed space. One of the key transitional areas that helped tie the looks together was the mantle flanked by the built-in bookshelves. The perforated metal cabinet doors, foiled tile, and marble countertops infused the space with a rich, textured ambiance that CH+D • Fall 2017

be working on, and use all of that knowledge to help them find the perfect blueprint for their lifestyle,” describes Jay. Because the homeowners enjoy entertaining in their home, they planned the kitchen at length with Rebecca to go beyond the beauty into a truly functional layout that creates the ideal floor plan

for multiple people and movement throughout the room. “The homeowners wanted to have as large of an island as possible so that they could set up things like buffets and breakfasts to let people help themselves,” explains Rebecca. “From there, we worked on everything, from each cabinet space, to where the trashcan would go, or even how each cookie sheet would be stored for maximum functionality.” All of that forethought even helped the couple on move-in day, because they

didn’t have to figure out where items like the cutlery would go—there was already a custom designated drawer for everything. With all that planning for efficiency, Rebecca and the homeowners didn’t forget about the aesthetic balance of the kitchen, which connects to the living area in the open floor plan. The couple wanted a very traditional style for both rooms, so Rebecca worked with their ideas and the magazine pic-

tures they had collected to draw up a simple and elegant masterpiece. “We chose cherry cabinets with a Cordovan stain as a nod to their traditional aesthetic and paired it with a simple shaker door,” says Rebecca. Across the way in the living room, cherry built-in shelving and a dramatic fireplace surround balance the rich colors of the kitchen. “Because the homeowners love dark woods so much, and we knew we would be workCH+D • Fall 2017

ing with a lot of ambient light from the large windows in the room, it was really fun to design a fireplace surround that had the same intensity as the kitchen,” Jay adds. Jay, Rebecca, and the team at HWC Custom Cabinetry installed cabinetry in the bathrooms and constructed the custom bookshelves in the library as well.

The most important aspect of the whole process, though, was how important every detail was to Jay and his team. “It was as if Jay and his people were building their own house; they knew the details were important to us, so they were important to each person we worked with,” expounds the wife of the pair. Live Oak’s Limelight Justin Smith and the folks at Vinyet Architecture and Sceltas Build + Consult worked together to tackle several challenges, like a large Live Oak in the backyard, to create a picture perfect Mt. Pleasant home for Becky and Trey Smith and their family.

However, we didn’t spend too much time messing with the plan. We had a good direction from the beginning.” After the “ah ha” moment where

the plan clicked into place for the initial design, the rest of the planning went well. “They did a really good job of taking direction and really just listening to our ideas,” adds homeowner, Becky Smith. “After just the first meeting, they almost nailed it; there were only minor changes after that. It was such an easy process.”

The home’s design came together with a great fluidity in many aspects. The home’s layout flows nicely from one space to another. A carefully thought out open floor plan allowed for more usable space in every room of the main floor. We do everything on site to make sure it is right,” adds James Arthur of Sceltas Build + Consult. “I think I built three different windows for the Smiths so they could see them and then pick the one that looked best in the house. We then used that

Modern Yet Mature After residing a little while in their Daniel Island home, Bill & Dee Caiazza determined it was time to give their almost twenty year-old home a facelift as well as some safety upgrades.

or many Charleston natives, it’s hard to believe that twenty years have passed since Daniel Island began welcoming the suburbs to its marshy shores. But for Bill & Dee Caiazza, the wear and tear that twenty years can often cause on a home was a reality. That’s when they decided to remodel. “We al-

ready had a list of changes we wanted to make when we purchased the house a few years ago,” says Bill. “Foremost on that list was the kitchen and outdoor deck.” That’s where Nathan Delpino and his team at Delpino Custom Homes came into the picture. Nathan met the Cai-

azza’s through another local homeowner whose house he had previously renovated. “When Bill and Dee saw their neighbor’s renovated home, they went home that evening and called me,” explains Nathan. Since Nathan has been living on, as well as renovating and building new custom homes on Daniel Island

for the better part of a decade, it was clear to Bill and Dee that a fellow resident who understood their way of life was the man for the job. “Bill and Dee wanted to open up the first floor to take advantage of their backyard marsh views, which can be tricky on Daniel Island, even though it’s surrounded by water,” adds Nathan. “There are trees, lot orientation, and of course building codes that have to be met and worked

around to accomplish everything.” The master bathroom update was one of Dee’s must-haves. “I brought Nathan a picture of what I wanted and he made it happen,” Dee mentions. The main feature she requested was a waterfall vanity leading into the master shower. As the builder and project manager, it was important to Nathan to ensure that each detail of the master bathroom was just as Dee wished. “When I talk to our

clients, it’s vital for us to be on the same page, so when they show me pictures, like Dee did, it immediately turns their vision into my vision,” describes Nathan. While the bathroom was underway, the kitchen was also being redesigned. Bill and Dee worked with Delpino Custom Homes and Jilco Kitchens and Baths to completely redraw the kitchen’s layout to the best advantage of the home and CH+D • Fall 2017

backyard panoramas. “Bill was nice enough to already have the kitchen ‘demoed out,’ as we say,” laughs Nathan. “For the redesign, they wanted up-to-date lighting, appliances, and electrical that would be easily accessible and easy to use.” The Caiazzas also chose a brick backsplash to balance the Britannica Cambria quartz countertops as part of Dee’s old world charm meets modern design style. tarting my freshman year of high school, my then boyfriend (and now husband) began bringing me to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. Granted, the J.R. Tucker High School JROTC Marine Corps Ball is different from the active duty Marine Corps Ball that I’ve been to in recent years, but the sentiment, spirit, and

enthusiasm are all the same. With that first glimpse of the Marine Corps, ooh rah, devil dog world, it’s become such a large part of my life that I was in shock and honored beyond belief that I was going to get the chance to meet and interview General Livingston and his wife. His legendary heroics and leadership have made an impact that will never be forgotten and continue to shape the Marines of today. For me, as the wife of a marine, having the opportunity to meet Sara Livingston, General Livingston’s wonderful wife, was like getting to meet Mickey Mantle or Grace Kelly because she is the gold standard for Marine spouses. Throughout his 33-year career with the Marine Corps, General Livingston received the Medal of Honor, a Navy Distinguished Service Medal, a Silver Star, a Superior Service Medal, a Bronze Star with a Combat “V” and three Purple Hearts among many others. Throughout your career you’ve been known, in part, for your leadership skills and instincts. Were you that way as a child and did you have a certain role model growing up for that leadership and determination? I guess I sort of was. I’d always push myself to work hard and do the best I could in school. I tried to encourage myself and other people. It turned out to be a successful route at the end of the day. I was always impressed with my mom because of her drive. She was a very disciplined and driven person and very demanding. I take up a lot of my characteristics from her. My dad was a little bit more laid back and easy going. My mom, she worked hard and lived to be 89 years old. She worked right up until she couldn’t anymore.

en farms in the South. We had the big chicken farm and a turkey farm. My dad was really on the cutting edge of all of that; he was an innovative guy in terms of farming. What made you decide to join the Marine Corps? I chose the Marine Corps because I was always impressed with the uniform and impressed with the people that I met who were Marines. I spent two boot camps during one summer up at Quantico. I got drafted in 1961 and I was graduating in 1962 and I decided I wanted to go into the Marine

Were there any members of your family that were in the military? I had two uncles who were; one uncle who was with the 82nd Airborne during World War II made a couple of jumps in Europe during the time. He was a hell raiser, so he never made it beyond corporal. My other uncle joined the army but never deployed. Most of my dad’s brothers were exempt because they were farmers. If you were a farmer, you could get exempt because they considered you critical on the home front. Your father was a farmer too, correct? Yes, I grew up on a farm in Towns, GA. I would get up early, work, go to school, work, study, and then go to bed. I always tell people that I’m 77 and I’ve been working for about 73 years. My dad was not a very easy guy to deal with and he expected you to work. It was a farm primarily associated with tobacco, cotton, watermelons, a lot of corn, and other vegetables. We had a dairy farm, and we actually had one of the first big chick-

My intent was to just do my three years and be done, but then I went to Vietnam at first in 1963 and ’64, without much going on and I came back and then went to Cherry Point, North Carolina, which is where the Marine Corps Air Station is located. I had been talking about getting a regular commission and had been offered one several times, and I decided that since the war was cranking up that I’d get a regular commission. From there, they sent me to Parris Island and then I went seagoing aboard an aircraft carrier and went to Vietnam the second time. You know, you’re sort of committed by then. [laughs] I went back a third time in ’74 and ’75 and did the evacuation of Saigon and was almost the last guy out in 1975. Two more helicopters came out of the embassy, but in terms of the over all larger aspect of the operation, I was on the last helicopter going out. What was one of your favorite parts about serving?

Corps. I had met this major who was a really sharp looking guy. The program that I had to go into, they normally have a boot camp in the summer between your sophomore and junior years and then a boot camp between your junior and senior year, but I was already at my summer between my junior and senior year. I ended up having to do two boot camps: one at the beginning of the summer and then a second boot camp before the summer was over. Needless to say, it was an interesting summer. When did you decide to turn being a Marine into your career?

I think the episode that I got the Medal of Honor sort of sticks in the memory a little bit, obviously. It was a major, major operation with the whole NVA division, which was 10,000 North Vietnamese, and 800 Marines against them. A lot of people were hurt and a lot of people were killed over there; 100 killed in that fight. Also, we’ve gotten to go to some nice places. We loved living in London and stayed in London for three years. The Philippines was nice. I’m a big fan of the orient; I’m a terribly big fan really and have spent a lot of time there and have been to most all of the countries in it. All of that is really fun. We did Kaneohe Bay in Hawaii and really enjoyed it. We didn't get to stay there too long, but we enjoyed it. We went to New Orleans and stayed there for a long time. I became a real lover of New Orleans. If it hadn’t been for my wife, I’d have probably never left. [laughs] I’m a big N’awlins guy. I always say that Charleston is a cleaned-up N’awlins.

You’ve written a lot about how the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) separates the USMC from other branches. Can you expand on that? First of all, the Marine Corps is very unique in the sense that every person in it is a Marine first. You go to other branches, like the Navy, and people talk about, “oh, he’s submariner,” or “he’s a pilot,” or something else, but we’re a Marine first. We’re very uniquely designed to be the first force to go and always be the more prepared to go because we emphasize

preparation and being forward deployed and responsive to whatever the nation’s commander says. That’s our forte. If we don’t perform to the expectations of the national military establishment or the national command, people might start asking why we need a Marine Corps because the Army or Air Force could do the mission. We are always having to fortify ourselves as being very unique and special as well as responsive and adaptive to whatever they throw at us. I read that you helped to found the

Desert Warfare Training Program. How did your time in Vietnam help you with this? It taught me very simply that you had to train up for the threat. This focused me a lot. During Vietnam, the reason we were so successful was that I was very tough on the Marines, and I worked all of the time to make sure they were physically fit and prepared both physically and mentally to deal with the threat that they had to go up against. I pushed them pretty hard. I got a good or bad reputation because of that, but at the end of the day, they’re all about 68, 69, and 70 years old, and they all tell me now, “Skipper, you done a good job.” I tell them in the older days, I had two goals: get the job done and to bring them all home. I was very focused on what I could do to accomplish both

of those tasks and bringing them home was a big deal to me. Is it fair to say that a lot of what was learned in Vietnam continues on today? You can see a lot of the success of the Vietnam vets during Desert Storm and a lot of legacy from that generation and the continued success going on to other operations. I think they did a good job. The other legacy of the Vietnam veterans is to make sure that the service people coming home are well treated. A lot of the focus of the Vietnam generation in contrast to what our generation experienced is the focus that the service people coming home are respected and that in the hospital systems they are well taken care of. There’s been a lot of hell raising against the VA to make sure they are getting whatever they’re due is as far as VA

benefits. I can’t count how many community organizations are out here that take care of vets, but it is a large number. That is a reflection of the Vietnam veterans and their desire to not see the same things repeated. That is definitely part of their legacy. Part of your own personal legacy is your family. How were you able to balance a personal life with your career and deal with all of those moves? General Livingston: Well, I think you sort of just develop this attitude and mindset where every two or three years you’re just ready to go. Mrs. Livingston: We don’t spring house clean, we just move! We’ve moved 29 times I believe. Sometimes we just stayed somewhere for three months or so while waiting for other housing.

Did your family have any favorite duty stations? Well, we enjoyed London and Hawaii, but none of them have been bad—even the ones aboard Marine bases like Camp Lejeune, Camp Pendleton, and Quantico. Basically, we’ve been to all of them. I’ve traveled all over the world, but the top of the ladder is probably London. We try to get back there every year. We’re big theatre people in London. There’s nothing better than listening to those Cockney guys trying to talk US. I’ll tell you, one of the cutest plays we’ve seen over there is Jersey Boys. They try to do the Jersey accents. Listening to those Cockney boys with their strong accents try to be Jersey guys with their strong accents is one of the damn funniest things I’ve ever seen. I really am a big fan of that particular play. The music of the Four Seasons is all my time.

Since you’ve lived all over the world, how did you two end up settling down here in Mt. Pleasant? Mrs. Livingston: I’m from South Carolina; Swansea if you’ve ever heard of it. Also, we met at Parris Island. I was teaching school in Beaufort and he was stationed at Parris Island. We both liked the Lowcountry and back then Beaufort was very small so we went to Charleston or Savannah to shop. We always said we’d come back to Charleston one day. General Livingston: I think the thing with Charleston, in contrast really to New Orleans, is that there is a variety. In New Orleans, you don’t have that and you don't have the extensive history that you find here either. If you look at it in terms of the history of Charleston and the layout of the city, it’s all here. You’ve got the theatre, great restaurants, the beach, and I don’t know what else you could ask for. What makes a house a home for you? I think what makes a house a home is just enjoying the environment of living there and coming home and reflecting on your experiences. Being with my wife and kids is just it. If you look at this house here, it is filled with a lot of memories. You look around and there are so many little trinkets and there are memories attached to every one of them. From the bobby hat over here that a police officer in London gave me years ago to all this other crap. It may not look like much, but it all has a story to it. We have the paintings and much of the furniture is one-of-a-kind and handmade in the Philippines. Throughout there are so many unique character things. I enjoy this whole place [condo building] and I don't think there’s any one particular point that I like. I stay hidden a lot down in the gym. I like living in this building because of its proximity to the gym. The gym and the pool both are nice. This place has everything really, including the grill, and there’s nothing we’re missing. Also, we are so close to Charleston. Frankly, I wanted to live in downtown Charleston, but I struggled and struggled looking at those old homes and I just didn’t want to spend the rest of my life maintaining an old home. Your achievements are well known and reflected throughout this lovely home, and we haven’t talked yet about your Medal of Honor or other awards. The Medal of Honor is the highest award you can get for military combat operations. There’s only been about 3,500 recipients and better than half were during the Civil War. There’s only 73 alive today. The thing about the Medal of Honor is that 65% are awarded posthumously. And you are one of the few to receive one amongst other awards like your three Purple Hearts. Yea, I should’ve tried to keep my head down. We saw a lot

of action. We were just below the DMZ where the bad guys were. They were all from the Medal of Honor engagement. I could’ve gotten a couple more, but I didn’t accept them. I got nicked in the head by an AK-47 and I got nicked again, but back in those days, if you got more than three Purple Hearts, they sent you home; we were having too much fun and didn’t want to go home! [laughs] The most interesting one was when I got nicked in the head. I just thank God that boy wasn’t from Kentucky or South Carolina! Have you been back to Vietnam? Mrs. Livingston: Oh yes. We took our daughters to Vietnam about two years ago. It is a great place to visit. Vietnam was always such a part of our lives. With the medal and everything, it has always been a big part of

their lives. They didn’t know what to expect, but they really enjoyed it. When we went to the place where he was wounded in the battle, we pulled up in the van and they were having some kind of big party with kegs of beer, karaoke, and dancing. Before the vehicle even stopped they were running up to the van and pulling us out and handing us a beer! So many years ago there was this big battle going on and so many years later, here are some Vietnamese people welcoming you back. General Livingston: They party in Vietnam. They don't drink wine and stuff; they drink beer. I guess it is cheaper and the water isn’t very good. You either drink beer or bottled water. The food is good. You live off of Vietnamese food for a week you want to come home and have a big steak. I fought for them to live like that, so it’s nice to go back and see it.

(2) A private patio allows the Livingstons to enjoy the Charleston weather without the hassle of having to maintain landscaping. (3) On the living room’s custom entertainment center, treasures like a piece of the Berlin wall, sand from Vietnam, and even a lighter from John Wayne are showcased. (4) General Livingston has retired from the Marine Corps, but he hasn’t slowed down a bit. His continuous work keeps him busy and his office full. (5) Having cozy guest rooms is important to Mrs. Livingston in order to house their family. (6) A custom engraved knife was gifted to General Livingston. (7) This corner of their formal dining room highlights more of their collectibles that have been acquired. (8) General Livingston’s Medal of Honor citation, the award’s emblem, and a photograph of him receiving the honor from President Richard Nixon alongside his family are spotlighted in their Mt. Pleasant home.

A Lutron lighting control system replaced the large banks of light switches with a single keypad throughout the home to provide convenient control of all lighting elements without the wall clutter created by large switch banks. This particular system also provides timed events for landscape and exterior entry points around the home. Intrusion protection is the common feature of any security system, but this one was customized to include monitored carbon monoxide and smoke sensors that alert the fire department as well as qualify the home for insurance discounts. Water sensors are also strategically placed at all water-fed appliances and bathroom fixtures to shut off the water if a leak is detected and send text notifications. Discrete speakers are blended into and around the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s finishes to provide theater-level sound quality without the muddle of large speakers or cords. The tv in the main living room is placed on a custom wall bracket which stores the TV in a traditional position and easily folds down for a more comfortable viewing angle for that move or game event. Security, lighting and audio/visual features can easily be controlled local or remotely by an app from any mobile device or the dedicated iPad in the kitchen.

The thermostats can be set to a collaborative schedule from a smartphone or the Touchscreen Honeywell Panels, which are installed in high-traffic spaces throughout the dwelling. The system is also set to automatically notify fire and safety authorities if a fire or gas leak is detected. Voice integration is a key element of this setup. The Amazon Echo allows the homeowners to speak commands to the system in order to operate each function within the home.

Inspiration Actualization After years of accumulating pictures of rooms and homes that she and her fiancĂŠ liked, Elicia Thompson saw those bits of paper come to life in their own Lowcountry home.

iming, creativity, hard work, and a lot of inspiration went into producing this Ravenel home for Elicia Thompson, her fiancé Brandon Hart, and their pups Kooper and Trooper. After not receiving the experience that they were looking for with their first builder, a disheartened Elicia and Brandon by chance met Shawn and Maria Doogan of Southeastern Family Homes of South Carolina while walking their dogs and suddenly their dreams were back on track. The four worked closely together to build a dwelling that checked off all of the boxes this young couple had on their wish list. Thanks to Brandon’s architectural design skills, Elicia’s scads of concept pictures and collection of Charleston Home + Design magazines, and the communication and connection with Southeastern Family Homes, the

process was (mostly) smooth sailing. Keeping in mind that this wasn’t their forever home, but still wanting it to be a nice fit for their style and needs, the couple spent a lot of time researching and planning for this

abode. The motivated homeowners brought many notions for this space, both inside and out, to the table. They watched programs like Fixer Upper and scoured Pinterest. In addition, many ideas were also gleaned via Charleston Home + Design magazine issues and the Daniel Island Home Tour. Elicia and Maria quickly clicked and the two spent hours upon hours hashing out the details of this home. “We went on the home tour this past year together and it was our favorite. We saw so many things we liked,” adds Elicia. “It was nice having Maria there to reign us in and remind us that we already had lighting and selections pinned down because we liked so much of what we saw!” While toting around old dog-eared and tabbed issues, Elicia and Maria journeyed all over Charleston picking

out materials for this house. One of Elicia’s must-have items was the granite countertop from AGM Imports. “We actually had to scale back the size of the island because I fell so in love with that slab. Originally, I wanted to have a really big island. Everybody gathers in the kitchen and we hardly ever sit on the sofas in the other room,” notes Elicia. To finish the look of this perfect gathering

space, Elicia picked out backsplash tile from Carpet Baggers Carpet One, cabinets from Authentic Kitchens, trim from Southern Lumber & Millwork, and appliances from Plugs Appliance Center. It was important to the homeowners to not only pick out the perfect finishes for every aspect of this project, but to put in a little sweat

equity as well. “We saved some of the projects for after we moved in because we wanted to do them ourselves. The shiplap walls we did as well as the casing and the wainscoting,” explains Elicia when pointing out the shiplap wall treatment that was sourced from Buck Lumber & Building Supply. “Nearly anywhere that you see the shiplap, underneath of that on the

wall we wrote special notes to put our personal stamp into the home.” With Brandon’s architectural background, their personal stamp was, in some ways, already made on the residence. “Brandon designed the home and even put it into a CAD system. I just had to bring it back to my guys to put the finishing touches on the plan,” expounds Shawn. From that plan,

the two couples carefully explored the footprint and layout of the domicile and Brandon and Elicia were able to tweak and alter the plan easily before the foundation was poured. After flipping through magazines and watching television programs to gather design and decorating concepts and diligently working for months on end,

the home was finally completed. The flourishing relationship between the homeowners and the Southeastern Family Homes build team has continued even though the project has been completed for a year. Even with all of the tweaks and modifications, the open lines of communication and genuine bond created during this time helped turn builders and clients into friends. ❣ CH+D • Fall 2017

ShopTalk Charleston Home + Design Office Remodel The remodeling bug hit home here at the offices of Charleston Home + Design magazine, which resulted in many changes both inside and out. With the boom of business taking place in the upper Charleston peninsula around our office, we were inspired by our architecturally inventive neighbors and opted to start making some improvements of our own. To help make all of our plans come to life, Philip Wingate of Lowcountry Tradesmen stepped up to the challenge. Our renovations began in the garage, moved outside, and worked their way into the main floor of the building. The first project that Philip tackled was to transform our storage area. He created custom shaker-style cabinets to protect our storage areas and installed coordinating luxury vinyl plank floors. Next, Philip was able to create a graded parking area on the side of the building featuring ROC and plantation dust finish. One of the most eye-catching improvements has to be the large, wooden marquee out front that Philip handcrafted out of American cherry wood floor planks from Charleston Plank Floors. The lush, green synthetic turf from Palmetto Moon Synthetic Turf complements this new sign well.

The custom work continued inside as well. After fixing several plumbing and electrical issues, Philip used salvaged materials to create a custom barn door, mobile island work space, and new kitchen countertops. The most recent round of Charleston Home + Design’s hit event Shark Tank: Architect Edition took place this past August as part of the Charleston Architect Symposium during the Charleston Fall Home Show. This installment of the biannual event saw new faces with the inclusion of Lowcountry interior designers into the mix of attendees. The select group of vendors in the symposium had the opportunity to chat with over 40 architects and interior designers about a product or service that would be of interest to them. Throughout the two-hour event, vendors were able to meet with the symposium attendees and carryout meaningful engagements during this relaxed and pressure-free time.
