Experimenting After School

The Science Club at Chase and Area Family Services has come to it’s exciting conclusion and there were explosions, by way of mentos in Coca Cola!

The group of young science enthusiasts, ages 5 - 8, were co-led by CAFS Resource Manager Kassidy Porlier, and a regular CAFS kid volunteer and budding scientist, Fynn Anderson, 9.

“I liked teaching younger kids how important science is,” said Fynn.

In their four weeks together the club explored the topics of Gravity, States of Matter, Material Properties and Chemical Reactions through hands on experiments.

“I also enjoyed the experiments. My favourite one was the egg drop,” said Fynn, about an activity in which the kids designed containers to best protect raw eggs that were then thrown from roof of the CRAS building. They learned about gravity in the process.

A PASTORAL PERSPECTIVE: The Medium is the Message

Growing up in the golden age of Television my understanding of this nation’s history was shaped by the 1 minute films that ran between my beloved cartoons entitled Heritage Minutes. For years I marveled at the work of Sir John A. and the splendor of “Rocket” Richard. But one particular of these short clips continued to confuse me: the depiction of University of Toronto professor Marshall McLuhan’s maxim The Medium is the Message.

There was some irony that many Millennials first learned of McLuhan’s idea through watching television. It seems apparent that we can apply this same reality to newer forms of media: smart phones, ‘social’ media, streaming services, etc.

EVCSS

The phase The Medium is the Message was first published in 1964 in McLuhan’s book Understanding Media. Maybe, like myself at 10 years old, you wonder what this means. This Canadian communication theorist highlighted that the way something is communicated is just as powerful as what is communicated, the method of communication is as formative as the content of that communication.

Marshall McLuhan expressed this idea in the context of the ascent of television in the 1960s and the recension of print media. McLuhan fleshed out how the media of television was changing messages that were being communicated — information shared by a thirty second news ‘hit’ shapes our minds and our lives in different ways than the front page of a newspaper does. The media of televised political debates are inevitably shaped more by the message entertainment and image than ideas or policy.

Put another way, how we relate to the medium aligns with how we relate to the message. And that concept is reflected in the Christian Scriptures. The Gospel of John describes Jesus of Nazareth as theWord of God, God made flesh, who dwelt amongst us. The media or medium, God in flesh was the message of the Word. The medium and the message were the same – in this case, they were perfectly united in the very same person.

But the media-message marriage isn’t just communication theory, cultural critique, or sound theology. It’s a helpful way of reflecting on our own lives and spheres of influence. What media or mediums form the message, the ideas of our lives? How do the ways that we live our lives shape our perspective on life?

These questions can apply to everything from the company you keep, to the food you eat, to the place you live. Certainly, living near the lake — as we do in Chase— shapes how we live our lives. Relationships that exist through the media (or the medium) of electronic connection are different than relationships lived in physical connection. Existing from individual frozen meals shapes our lives in ways beyond the nutritional content of those meals. Do the comforts of solitary living form us into people who experience loneliness or isolation? How does our response to our problems and challenges form our understandings of the world — do we draw lines between people groups or lose sight of that which is beyond ourselves?

60 years ago, this Canadian icon proposed that the media, the medium — the way something is experienced is as formative as what is experienced. What are the mediums, the ways that we experience the world around us, that shape our view of ourselves, this village, or this world? How is your thinking and living shaped by the ways that you live?

We’re all shaped by messages. If the media is the message, what is that message in your life?

Thompson-Nicola residents urged to get active for cognitive health

Brain Awareness Week promotes activity as way to lessen health risks

Keep a healthy lifestyle to support brain health: It’s a message the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is sharing with ThompsonNicola residents and others around the province to mark Brain Awareness Week March 11-17.

The charity is encouraging people across the province to get active and help lower the risk of developing dementia by making healthy lifestyle choices, including getting regular physical activity.

Jill Gratton and her husband Mick, who lives with dementia, couldn’t agree more. They have been attending Minds in Motion®, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s fitness and social program where they have the opportunity to participate in gentle physical exercise and socialize with other people living with early-stage dementia and their care partners.

“It gets the old grey matter stirring,” Jill says with a laugh.

Minds in Motion® is supported largely through the generous community support of the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s

submitted by Alzheimer Society of B.C.

donors.

The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, presented by Go Auto, is the charity’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Set for Sunday, May 26 in communities across the province, the Walk helps fund programs including Minds in Motion®. Walking regularly and signing up for the Walk are great ways to support a healthy lifestyle for people on the dementia journey, while supporting brain health.

The fundraising event and Minds in Motion® are excellent ways to get exercise as well as social interaction –both activities help lower the risk of developing dementia.

“People who exercise regularly are less likely to develop heart disease, stroke and diabetes – all risks associated with dementia,” says Dr. Sarah Wu, strategic lead of research for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “Research also shows that socializing regularly may help reduce your risk of developing dementia, so it only makes sense to increase the brain benefits by getting active and in a group setting whenever you can.”

Following a healthy diet, managing stress as well as avoiding

smoking and excess alcohol consumption also help lower the risk. Challenging your brain with activities like the brain teasers and team games the Grattons enjoy at Minds in Motion® can also have an impact.

“I’ve met a new group of people, so my circle of friends has widened – and what’s more important, they’re people who all understand what we’re going through,” Jill says. “Mick is comfortable there because it’s something we do together. He doesn’t feel he’s alone. He looks forward to it. And me? Well, I’m happy when he’s happy.”

Mick has been living with dementia for almost 12 years. Thanks to Jill’s dedication and support from the charity, he’s never had to face his dementia journey alone.

Programs like Minds in Motion® are only possible through the generosity of donors, as well as the support of community fundraisers across the province. For information on joining the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in your community, visit WalkForAlzheimers.ca.
