Food Forest taking shape

submitted by Ashton Sweetnam, CAFS

We are moving towards the end of our second week of earthworks and garden preparation, and are looking forward to commencing planting trees and shrubs in the coming weeks. Once again residents of the community of Chase have stepped up to help make a dream a reality. With the goal of this food forest becoming a community space where anyone is welcome to come to play, learn, and eat- it is heartening to see the high level of involvement that has taken place so far.

space and learn about the principles that inspired the design of the garden, and to participate in its creation.

We look forward to the next stage in which we will involve varying community groups and individuals in the final stages of preparation and then planting the space. We will involve children at the local schools in the process to create learning experiences and to connect them with this nature play space.

We have had two very productive work bees where the primary planting areas have been built. Volunteers arrived with shovels and wheelbarrows to prepare the

If you are looking for a way to participate, there are remaining trees to be sponsored, financial donations are helpful, and we welcome contributions of time as the food forest develops.

“Give Back” this Earth Day 2024, April 22nd

submitted by Chase Environmental Action Society

Since our planet is our only home, we are all responsible to protect it for future generations.

Environmental degradation has huge consequences for all humans, wildlife, and the ecosystems we all share. Human caused climate change is having significant impacts on the planet and destroying the natural order.

How can we ignore just some of the more recent tragic events that happened?

The wildfires in Lytton, the North and Little Shuswap, Turtle Valley, Sorrento, and surrounding areas. Many of our neighbors and friends lost their homes, livelihoods and continue to be displaced. The heat dome wiped out a billion sea creatures and caused the deaths of over 600 people in BC. The current drought continues to affect farmers and their crops, and we need to be concerned about our food sovereignty. Our wild salmon, crucial to First Nations and regarded as a keystone species supporting over 130 species, are also dwindling in numbers. The flooding in the Lower Mainland, the Fraser Canyon and Coquihalla Hwys, Princeton, and Merritt resulted in months of road closures, damaged and destroyed homes, farms, and infrastructure, and cost millions of dollars in repairs.

1) Try car-pooling, walking or trying an e-bike rather than jumping in a vehicle. If you can afford it, purchase a “quiet” electric or hybrid vehicle.

2) Reduce energy consumption by lowering thermostats in the colder months and using fans in the warmer months. Turn off phantom lights and use a clothesline or racks to dry your laundry.

3) Conserve water by washing full (rather than partial) loads in cold water, use timers on irrigation taps, collect rainwater, install a lowflow toilet and take shorter showers.

4) Reduce plastic waste by using cloth bags and refusing plastic of any kind–our world is drowning in it!

5) Eliminate methane gas by composting organic waste and installing a heat pump (keeps you cool in the summer too) instead of using “natural” (methane) gas.

6) Let’s buy only what we need and resist our habit to consume.

We can also hold our governments and corporations accountable for their part in continuing to allow the devastation of our planet. Support policies and regulations that protect the environment by voting for those that will commit to change.

10

By “giving back” this Earth Day, we can raise awareness of these issues. We can also take action to reduce our impacts on our environment and air quality. Taking action will improve our overall health and happiness.

There are many ways to take action, here are a few:

All of us can play a role on Earth Day, and every day, by making ourselves aware of how our behavior impacts our health, others and our planet, and changing it for the better. Please join us, and other organizations, for Chase’s Give Back this Earth Day on Apr 19th being held at the downtown Pocket Park from 10-2pm.

Public Input on Current Agenda Items. Members of the public commented on the remedial action requirement at 229B Brooke Drive, water and sewer rates, and water meters.

Notice of Motion from April 2, 2024 Special Meeting. A motion was made by Councillor Torbohm and was seconded to have staff bring back information to the May 14, 2024 Council meeting to show what the financial implications are to the water fund by reducing the minimum consumption from 60 m3 to 30 m3 and also include in the staff report other potential options. News from First Nations - Additional March News Items

FIRST INDIGENOUS FEMALE NHL SCOUT

History maker Brigette Lacouette has been appointed the first Indigenous woman to scout for a National Hockey League team. Hired as Regional Scout for the Chicago Blackhawks, she was also the first First Nations woman to play hockey for Canada in the 2018 Winter Olympics, earning a silver medal at the Pyeongchang Olympics.

A member of the Ojibwa community and from Mallard, Manitoba, Brigette plays for the Calgary team in the

Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) league, as well as serving on the NHL’s Player Inclusion and Female Hockey Advisory committees.

FIRST INDIGENOUS GOLDEN GLOBE WINNER

Lily Gladstone also made history at the recent Golden Globe Awards, taking home the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama in recognition of her starring role in “The Killers of the Flower Moon”—the first Indigenous actor to win an award in the Golden Globes 81-year history.

She was also named Best Actress of 2023 by the New York Film Critics Circle. Lily, whose heritage includes Blackfeet and Nez Perce roots, stated in her acceptance speech, “This is an historic one, and it doesn’t belong to just me—I’m holding it with all of my beautiful sisters in the film and my mother in the film, Tantoo Cardinal.”

BRITISH COLUMBIA MANDATES FIRST NATIONS STUDIES IN SECONDARY SCHOOL

For the first time, all secondary students in BC will be required to

complete Indigenous focused course work prior to graduation. Under the new model, students currently in Grade 10 will be the first group to complete a course on First Nations history and culture, during this school term. The new requirement is the result of years of essential work and investigation by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Since its implementation in September at all public, independent, and offshore schools, the response has been positive from students and teachers alike.

A lady had a medical emergency at the Copper Island Pub in Sorrento on Tuesday night. The woman had stopped breathing, but luckily there was an R.I.H. E.R. nurse, Lyndsay, on the premises! With her instant expert response, and CPR method she saved our friend Teresa’s life! It really was a miracle the way everything unfolded. She is now, on the road to a safe recovery!
