32nd Annual Daddy Daughter Date Night By: ELISE HUBEL The 32nd Annual Daddy-Daughter Date Night was held Sunday at the Comfort Inn & Suites conference room. Over 700 fathers and daughters participated in the date night. The couples were able to take part in activities such as crafting, bingo, raffles, and dancing. Carnations and professional photos were also available for purchase. Dwayne McClain and his two daughters Destiny, age 8, and Lamiya, age 5, attended the 6 p.m. date night. This was their second year coming to the event. “It’s a nice little getaway with the girls,” McClain said. “It’s rare that we go out without my son or their mommy, just me and the girls.” McClain, like other fathers, looks forward to getting to spend the evening with his daughters as well as getting dressed up. “We try to coordinate our outfits each year,” McClain said. “I think last year we wore blue.” Although there is no formal dress code, many of the father-daughter couples dressed in their finest clothes for the date night. McClain and his two daughters agreed on their favorite part of the Daddy Daughter Date Night. “I really like the dancing,” 5-year-old Lamiya said. Her father and older sister Destiny agreed. However, Destiny added that she has another favorite part of the night, the food. Ranging from infants to college students, daughters return year after year to spend the evening with their fathers. Carol Moody, recreation coordinator for Parks and Recreation, said that each year she sees the same families return to the daddy-daughter date. “It’s fun to see them come back every year,” Moody said. She has worked with the event for 13 years. “I think the event is huge,” she continued. “It’s a great chance for fathers to spend time with their daughters.” Moody said she feels like the luckiest mom in Mt. Pleasant for getting to participate in the Daddy-Daughter Date Night. With only sons, Moody enjoys getting to see all the girls dressed up.

The Facts: The City’s Owner Occupied Residence Incentive Program In April of 2008, the Mt. Pleasant city commission voted to set aside $100,000 to fund a brand new program called the Owner-Occupied Residential Incentive Program. The program’s intention was to create an incentive for homeowners to turn in their rental license rights, thereby creating fewer rental properties and more single-family homes. The original target neighborhood was expanded in July of 2009. During the 8 years of the project, 14 properties have had their rental license rights turned in, although one property owner returned the money within a year. The very first property to take advantage of the program was 411 Pine whose owners received $1,587.50 on July 31, 2008. In 2009 the $1,587.50 was returned to the city. 411 Pine was homesteaded again in 2014. The latest property to be incentivized, 501 S. Kinney, was granted its first rental license on June 22, 2015. The cost for a property to be inspected and granted a rental license is $44.00. The property owner of 501 S. Kinney was charged a pro-rated $25.62. Six months later the property was sold between family members. The new owner applied for the Owner-Occupied Residential Incentive and received $9,500 from the city on December 18, 2015. $9,500 was not only the largest amount the city has given as an incentive, it is more than double the average of the other 13 properties ($4,675). The current program does not require a minimum length of time for the property to have been a rental, nor does it require that the property has to have actually ever been rented. Incentive owners are required to either occupy the property or sell the property to owner-occupants for five years after giving up their rental license. Even after receiving the incentive, homeowners can still rent up to one-half of the “habitable floor space.” Just to reiterate: The cost to turn an owner-occupied house into a rental is $44 & the city has paid up to $9,500 when a rental became owner-occupied.

CITY NEWS Washington Area Neighborhood Association

The Washington Area Neighborhood Association (WANA) held a neighborhood meeting on Tuesday, February 2nd. The agenda included a history of WANA, a treasurer’s report, and updates on current happenings with the group. WANA Treasurer, Alexis Dailey, reported that one new change to the association is the collection of dues to help create a more legitimate existence and help offset costs that might be incurred, such as postage for notification of meetings. Annual membership fees of $5.00 per household will be collected. An update regarding Potter Playground was also presented during Tuesday’s meeting. Through a grant the city was able to receive playground equipment that will be installed Mid- to late June. They are hoping to raise the remaining $50,000 worth of improvements to the playground through a fundraising campaign where MEDC will match the funds. Of the $25,000 the community will need to raise, the Kiwanis club has already pledged $10,000. The organization’s boundaries range from Oak to Mission and Broadway to Bellows. To better serve this area the group is looking for “Block Captains” who are willing to help distribute meeting information to a 2-3- block area a few times a year. WANA board members are planning to host a few events in 2016. In the fall they will host a candidate forum for City Commission candidates. The second event is a new event for this community that will be held Sunday, June 12th. PorchFest will be an event where neighbors use their front porches as performance venues and are matched with local talent. Neighbors are encouraged to wonder around the area, by walking or biking, to enjoy the various performances and meet their neighbors. If you are interested in finding out more information about WANA find them on Facebook at “Washington Area Neighborhood Association”, or email them at WANAMountPleasant@ gmail.com

The Pulse

CITIZEN SPOTLIGHT - MAYOR KATHY LING By RYAN GRIFFUS One of the most notable and enjoyed concepts of the Central Michigan Community, particularly the City of Mt. Pleasant, has been its “big city” opportunities, accompanied by the “small town” atmosphere that the dynamic community offers. This edition’s Citizen Spotlight will attempt to seize the opportunity for the larger-scale community to become familiarized with the recently re-elected mayor who also cites Mt. Pleasant as a place small enough that anyone is able to have an impact, but, big enough also to offer a diverse set of opportunity to local citizens. Kathy Ling was re-elected as mayor for the City of Mt. Pleasant at the first meeting of the year by her fellow commissioners. Mayor Ling instantly proved her humility and leadership merit when approached with a request for the opportunity to name her as the subject of the Citizen Spotlight article. When asked, Mayor Ling suggested instead, another member of City government, rather than herself, in effort of familiarizing citizens with the members of their City Commission. While The Pulse will take Mayor Ling’s suggestion for a future spotlight, it is because of that leadership and positive quality of selflessness, that this edition will be reserved for the community to Mayor Kathy Ling. Her stay in Mt. Pleasant was only supposed to last “four or 5 years” according to Mayor Ling but, 45 years later, she and her husband David remain pillars of the Community, invested in the enrichment of the Central Michigan area. Mayor Ling was born in Detroit and raised in nearby Royal Oak. She, David, and the couple’s infant son, arrived in Mt. Pleasant in 1971, when David was granted an assistant professorship in the Speech Communication Department, and debate

coach appointment at Central Michigan University. It took Mayor Ling, little time to instantly involve herself in local government by linking-up with the League of Women Voters with whom she has been actively involved for 45 years. Presently, Mayor Ling serves on the League’s Advocacy Committee at the State Level. She is part of a LWV’s speakers’ group doing presentations on the need for the State to implement changes in the method used to redraw districts for state and federal elections. While this certainly is a substantial task, Mayor Ling has shown distinction as an individual willing to accept a challenge and lead others through the process. An English and Social Studies teacher at Mt. Pleasant High School for 25 years, Mayor Ling challenged young minds for two-and-a-half decades to become involved in their community and remember that “Democracy is not a spectator sport” as the banner that hung in her classroom stated for all her students to be reminded of their civic duty if they desired a great community. During her tenure in the school system, Mayor Ling also encouraged productive dialogue and meaningful discussion by coaching debate and instructing speech communication courses as temporary faculty at both CMU and Alma College. As much as Mayor Ling may promote a challenge to the fact, there appears to be no debate over the positive influence that she has had in the local community over the past 45 years. Despite the overwhelming amount of service that she has provided to the community, it is Mayor Ling that expresses gratitude and admiration for the Central Michigan area and cites the “lasting friendships” with the “many wonderful people both at the University and within the community” as some of the influences in the Lings’ lives that influenced their once-anticipated return to the “big

city” to be but, a fleeting-notion as they soon realized Mt. Pleasant was where they wanted to remain. Mayor Ling and her husband David have planted their roots firmly in Mt. Pleasant. They raised their three children, now adults, in the community and proudly serve as grandparents to three “beautiful” grandchildren as Mayor Ling affectionately refers. Their son Duane and daughter Lisa reside in Mt. Pleasant, while their son Michael and Daughterin-law Tina call the west coast city of Walnut Creek, CA home. The three grandchildren that Mayor Ling dotingly noted are Abby (18), Lydia (16), and Victoria (5). While it is nice to have a vacation spot set in California for trips to visit their son and his family, Mayor Ling and her husband also enjoy taking in some of the splendor of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, and the area in Leelanau County near Lake Michigan. Mayor Ling and her husband share common interests in leisure activities like reading and completing crossword puzzles. Additionally, Mayor Ling also revels in photography and biking when she is able, through the “exceptional park system” that she fondly describes. Mayor Ling is an innovator and a leader. She has goals that include remaining involved in local government while enjoying the Central Michigan community, along with the friends and

family that the Lings hold dear. Mayor Ling and her husband also hold a more personal goal of enjoying a trip to Paris “someday”. The Pulse would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mayor Ling for her years of dedicated service and this opportunity for the Central Michigan community to become more familiar with their current Mayor. Mayor Ling stated it best “We are all in this together” and The Pulse would echo her sentiment that “we all have a role to play if we want a great community and a great country”. Thank you Mayor Ling for executing your role with care, encouragement, and a positive approach toward local government!

CMU Voice Students Showcase Opera at Art Reach

By SAM VILLARREAL

Art Reach of Mid Michigan hosted their monthly “Let’s Do Lunch” event on February 3, 2016. Taking place on the first Wednesday of every month, Art Reach hosts a different variety of talents including musical stylings, talks, and demonstrations. The event takes place from 12-1pm and is free and open to the public. Two voice students from Central Michigan University performed opera for the group that gathered in the Morey Family Gallery. Both students performed pieces from their upcoming shows in March and were accompanied on piano by Professor Mary Jo Cox. Their professor, Dr. Eric Tucker, gave each singer an introduction, and fielded questions from community members at the conclusion of the event. CMU senior Maranda Ginap was the first to sing. She delighted the audience with a song from “Suor Angelica,” an Italian opera by Giacomo Puccini. Ginap is to play Angelica, a nun who has suffered the loss of a child. Senior Gabriel Deyarmond followed and performed a song from “L’Enfant Prodigue.” Deyarmond will play the son in the French opera by Claude Debussy. Their large voices impressed everyone in the room. Both of the one act operas will be performed at the Staples Family Concert Hall on March 18, 19, and 20. The Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:30pm while the show on Sunday will be a matinee at 2pm. Tickets are available through Ticket Central or by calling (989)-774-3045. There’s a charge of $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors.

The Great Groundhog’s Day Conspiracy By S. R. Covieo Every February 2nd media from around the world plant themselves firmly in the little Pennsylvania town known as Punxsutawney to await the appearance of a boy named Sue, or rather, a groundhog named Phil. When Phil appears the world holds its collective breath hoping that Phil does not see his shadow, which of course means that we are in for an early Spring. But, as Phil’s predictions are wrong more often than right, in a little place called Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, we secretly clutch to our religious accessories praying that Phil sees his shadow. But, dating back to Phil’s first prediction in 1887, Michigan has never seen an early Spring, even though we have been told many of those years that Phil has seen his shadow and we should expect warmth within a few weeks. Here in Michigan that warmth never seems to come until the middle of May, no matter whether Phil sees his shadow or not. This dilemma has perplexed Michiganders for over a century, but not any longer. The Pulse has learned through an exclusive interview with Punxsutawney Phil’s former lover, Mt. Pleasant Mabel, that beneath the surface of the annual Groundhog Day Celebration there exists an evil conspiracy that leads straight to the Mayor’s office. Mabel, shown here trying to get spiritually centered before this year’s Groundhog’s Day hullabaloo gets started, said the real reason her and Phil are no longer together is that Mabel threatened to expose the Mayor of Punxsutawney and tell the world that Phil is blind. That’s right, the groundhog who is relocated to a temporary home at Gobbler’s Knob, two miles east of Punxsutawney, every February to prognosticate the end of winter

has never, and will never, see his shadow. He is blind. And that is how a mayor and small town in Pennsylvania have made sure for over a century that we here in Michigan endure a longer winter every single year. According to Mabel the night after she threatened to expose the Mayor she was kidnapped and driven to Mt. Pleasant. Mabel also told us that Phil’s wife and daughter, Phyllis and Phelicia, who are shown alongside him every year, are flown in from England every year to maintain the appearance of Phil’s royalty. Phil and Mabel still talk every day, although Mabel said that she and Phil are no longer together. “You know how hard it is for a groundhog to travel that far,” ask Mabel, “it’s not as if I could just get a bus ticket. Besides,” Mabel concluded, “if the Mayor caught us together who knows what he’d do.” So fellow Mt. Pleasant residents just know that no matter what they try to tell us tomorrow, Phil will not see his shadow nor we will see an early Spring

Local Bowling...with Dave Lewis Who “emerges” this year as a CT Champion? In case you haven’t heard, for all Mount Pleasant bowlers, Monday, February 15th through Friday, February 19th is our “City Tournament Week”. The tournament format is the same as a state tournament, conducting both a 5-person TEAM Event(Chippewa Lanes) & also a Doubles & Singles Event(Riverwood Lanes). Every year, unexpectedly, at least 1 bowler has an outstanding performance & “emerges” to capture a title. 300-400 bowlers compete… will YOU “emerge” in 2016? (Next week: See the list of 16 defending champions from the 2015 MP USBC City Tournament.) Most league bowlers enter; some choose only the Team Event; others choose only Doubles & Singles; still others create composite teams just for this week. Bowl an event on your regular league night or bowl additional night(s) during the week and compete in the virtual “All-Events” Prize Lists. Check with your team captain to make sure your team is entered. If interested, but can’t field a team, let me know. I put teams together as necessary to fill various squads during the week. (I know at least one bowler planning to bowl three TEAM events & two D&S events!!) “Providing the arena” is sometimes overlooked. Without the bowling facilities and the cooperation at Chippewa Lanes & Riverwood Lanes throughout the season, bowlers would not have a “place to play”. The bowling centers are the true hosts of the city tournament. Also, running the tournament would not be possible without the support from all the volunteer members of the MP USBC Board of Directors. I want to take this opportunity to thank them all, in advance! Local High School bowling: (MPHS & Shepherd) The MPHS girls won against Midland Dow. High games: Marybeth Marsh(127), Clarissa Klein(120), Emily Onica(116 & 115). The boys team lost to Midland, but posted high games by Deven Loomis(198) and Jacob Baker(187 & 184). Then, in last Saturday’s match against Flint Southwestern, both girls & boys won! Girls high games: Courtney Cotter(128) & Emily Onica(123 & 121). The boys we led by Jacob Baker(174 & 167) and Basil Naganshe(161). Their next match is Tuesday in Bay City(Monitor Lanes). Major League Football Selects CMU Alum Dan LeFevour By S. R. Covieo In case you don’t get your fill of wrinkled rich guys hiring young men to smash themselves violently together each Fall, Major League Football (MLFB) will be bringing you more of the same thing in the Spring. According to its website, MLFB, founded by former NFL receiver Wes Chandler, concluded the first day of its inaugural draft on January 28th, including its first franchise player draft. MLFB will start with 8 league-owned teams. CMU alum Dan LeFevour was selected as one of the league’s first class of eight franchise players. MLFB rule play looks a lot like the NFL, with a few slight changes. 50 yard field goals will count for 4 points instead of 3, and in the MLFB the ground can indeed cause a fumble. It’s hard to say if the MLFB is just the next partner in a long line of NFL bride’s maids, think World Football League, USFL, etc., but for whatever it’s worth it brings LeFevour back to U.S. Football. LeFevour, who was drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft by the Chicago Bears, has spent the past four years seeing very limited playing time with three different teams in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Haven taken the Chippewas to three MAC titles over his career, perhaps the MLFB is just what Dan LeFevour needs to get back to his winning ways. As a franchise selection he should have plenty of play time to show if he still has the arm and scramble that fans saw from him here at Central Michigan. LeFevour also recently announced that the Dan LeFevour QB Academy camps will be forming soon and will take place in mid-michigan.
