AROUND TOWN Mt. Pleasant Citizens Academy Week 5 Overview

In the second to last week of the city of Mt. Pleasant’s Citizens’ Academy, participants heard presentations from four city of Mt. Pleasant department heads, First up was Director of Community Services and Economic Development Bill Mrdeza who shared the many ways that economic development is a process and not a happening. Michelle Sponseller, Downtown Development Director, talked about how the downtown area has changed over the years. Sponseller said that downtown Mt. Pleasant has been recognized as a National Historic District since December 2014. City Planner Jacob Kain, the driving force behind bringing Citizens’ Academy to residents, shared the process of how a development gets approval, including all of the work that happens before a development makes it in front of the Mt. Pleasant Planning Commission. Kain stated that the city’s first master plan was adopted in 1946, and that our current zoning ordinance was adopted in 1984. The city is currently working on rewriting the zoning ordinance. Brian Kench, Building Official, shared slides with examples of site plans, nonconforming building practices, and plan reviews as part of the process of educating participants about the building permit process. The city’s current zoning map is on the right to show the diversity of zoning areas throughout the city. Next week: Citizens’ Academy gets introduced to public safety.

Central Michigan Pregnancy Services becomes ‘Life Choices’ By ELISE HUBEL Life Choices of Central Michigan recently underwent a name change. The name change went into effect within the last six months. Formerly known as Central Michigan Pregnancy Services, the organization changed its name to eliminate any confusion about the services offered.

Central Michigan Pregnancy Services, located at 904 E. Preston, recently changed its name to Life Choices of Central Michigan

Along with services regarding pregnancy, Life Choices of Central Michigan also offers testing for sexually transmitted diseases. Executive Director Mary Barz said she believes the name change will stop community members from believing the organization only caters to pregnant women. The name change also serves to create a more welcoming environment for men. With pregnancy in the name, Barz said she felt men might be unlikely to participate in the parenting programs offered. By altering the name, she hopes more men will take part in the organizations father parenting programs, which take place twice a month. Life Choices of Central Michigan is a faith-based organization located at 904 E. Preston St. It features a medical clinic and family education programs. Medical procedures performed include pregnancy test and verification, ultrasounds, and sexually transmitted disease testing. The organization also offers family education programs ranging from pregnancy until a child reaches his/her toddler years. More information can be found at www. lifechoicescm.com

AROUND TOWN Local Family Loses Home to Fire Early Saturday Morning

By S. R. COVIEO ​ ​One local couple lost their home this week when a fire broke out around midnight. The fire happened at Pleasant Ridge Estates mobile home park, which is located just south of Deerfield road on Mission street. The couple said the fire started on the outside of the home, and quickly spread inside. They were both able to make it out to safety, but were unable to get their cats out. Even with the quick response of the local fire departments and their attempts to put out the flames, the home is a total loss. Firefighters doused the trailers on either side of the home with water to minimize any additional damage. Even so, the effects of the fire were seen on the exterior of at least one additional home. The couple said they had been struggling financially recently, but were planning to restart the insurance policy on their home in March. Fire fighters from the Mt. Pleasant, Shepherd, and Union Township fire departments responded, as well as MMR. Many people in our community are one decision, one event, or one tragedy, such as a house fire, away from being homeless. One local collaborative effort, the Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH) provides much needed nightly shelter during winter months. The ICRH Welcome Center is located at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 319 S. University St. (next door to Veterans Memorial Library), and is open every day from 4:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. until April 2016. You can find more information about ICRH at www.icrhouse.org This Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. CMU held a screening and discussion panel for the film ‘Storied Streets: Reframing the Way You See Homelessness,’ which is a one-hour film that humanizes the homeless members of our society. Thrive Church Collecting Water for Flint

Thrive Church has already collected almost 10,000 bottles of water and there’s still time for you to donate before they take the water to Flint on February 21st. You can bring water donations to either of Thrive’s services this Sunday at Celebration Cinemas at 9:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

Feeding Our Neighbors Today, nearly one in six Isabella County residents falls below the federal poverty guidelines. The Community Compassion Network (CCN) works to provide relief for our neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet, through mobile food pantries. Two Saturdays of each month, CCN’s mobile pantries provide food assistance to more than 200 families. Forty percent of the individuals served are over the age of 60, while 30 percent are children and youth under the age of 18. Many of those in the middle are who we might call the “working poor.” They are employed, but still struggle to make ends meet. In 2015, the Community Foundation provided grant funding of $12,500 to CCN from the Mt. Pleasant Oil Industry Food Pantry Fund, the Community Impact Fund, and the John R. and Constance M. Harkins Community Fund to assist with mobile food pantries.

Giving Tree says “Stay Warm” This past Sunday packages of handmade winter accessories began appearing in Mt. Pleasant city parks with a simple message written on the bags: “Stay Warm / Giving Tree.” The winter wear was spotted throughout Island and Millpond parks. The Pulse would like to thank the anonymous community members who are responsible for helping out other community members with this giving tree project.

No Bull Triple Crown Snowmobile Race Comes to Mt. Pleasant The No Bull Triple Crown Enduro Snowmobile Races are coming to Mt. Pleasant this weekend. Events will take place at the Isabella County Fairgrounds on the old Mt. Pleasant Meadows Horse racing track and grandstand. Mt. Pleasant Meadows, closed now for two years, has been used for other events such as the main events at the Isabella County Fair each summer. Mt. Pleasant doesn’t have a winter festival, so bringing events like this to town helps fill that current void. All day racing starts on Friday at 1:00 p.m., including hot laps, qualifying, and championship heats. In addition to snowmobile racing, there will be food and drink concessions, vendor booths, a lounge, a kids corner, a warming tent, a mechanical bull for Friday night, and other activities for the whole family. This weekend’s races are the second part of the No Bull Triple Crown series which includes two other races held in Caro and Lincoln.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Found Dead an election year, the process could take a little longer as at least one presidential hopeful has already commented on the process. Republican nominee candidate Ted Cruz tweeted early today: “Justice Scalia was an American hero. We owe it to him, & the Nation, for the Senate to ensure that the next President names his replacement.” There is a Republican debate scheduled for tonight at 9:00 ET, so we may hear more about this from the candidates. Democratic nominee Bernie Sanders stated: “While I differed with Justice Scalia’s views and jurisprudence, he was a brilliant, colorful and outspoken member of the Supreme Court. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and his colleagues on the court who mourn his passing.” President Obama has already appointed two Supreme Court Justices, including Sonia Sotomayor in 2009 and Elena Kagan in 2010. By S. R. COVIEO Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead Saturday morning, less than one month shy of his 80th birthday. He is believed to have died of natural causes while on a hunting trip in Texas. Scalia was nominated / appointed by President Reagan in 1986. President Obama will now have the job of nominating someone to fill the vacated position. Following the President’s recommendation, the Senate will have the authority to consent to or reject his appointee. The process to appointment a new Supreme Court Justice averages about two to three months depending on depth of opposition and other political factors. With this year being

Other current Justices include Anthony Kennedy (appointed by Reagan in 1988); Clarence Thomas (appointed by George H. W. Bush in 1991); Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer (appointed by Clinton in 1993 and 1994 respectively); John Roberts and Samuel Alito (appointed by George W Bush in 2005 and 2006 respectively). This means that of the current eight Supreme Court Justices, half have been appointed by a Republican President and the other half by a Democratic President. President Obama has already stated that he will “nominate a successor in due time.”

Outdoors with Chris Zimmerman “Ain’t No Feeling Like Snowmobiling” Late last spring, I bought a couple of used snowmobiles with the hopes of taking them on the ice of Saginaw Bay. They’re fifteen years old, in really good shape and the perfect machines for an ice fishing enthusiast like myself. All I could think about was the wind in my helmet, Kid Rock in my ear, and the roar of the engine as I zipped over the frozen water, 60 miles east of Mt. Pleasant. A snowmobile is the perfect vehicle for ice fishing because it can dart across pressure cracks and heavy snow. Four-wheel machines can get bogged down in snow drifts, and a crack wider than a ruler presents a problem. It was about time I bought my own rig. For years I had mooched rides off my buddies’ machines to and from the walleye waters. Even though I paid for their gas, and By CHRIS ZIMMERMAN we had a lot of fun on the ice, I still felt like a third wheel on a Valentine’s Day date. As much fun as I hoped to have this winter, safe ice on Saginaw Bay never really materialized. With warm weather in the forecast for this week, I doubt if there will be ice by the time the spring thaw arrives. Instead of watching my new sleds collect dust, I invited my neighbors Sean and Jacob Fountain to join me on a trail ride. The woods surrounding Houghton Lake are loaded with trails and there’s no shortage of snow, either. The Fountain boys attend Mt. Pleasant high school and are fine young men. What youngster doesn’t appreciate the thought of ripping through the woods on a machine that has 120 on the speedometer? Even though I don’t have a lot of experience trail riding, it was a blast. The trails were well groomed, smooth, and clearly marked. There were straightaways and curves, open areas, and swamps. I found myself shifting in the seat every time we negotiated a hairpin curve. We saw a few other folks on the trails but it wasn’t like we had to be on our toes. The other snowmobilers saluted us with a raised glove or a nod of a helmet. Seven miles into our adventure, we stopped in an open area and made a little bonfire. I had packed some sausages and we roasted them over an open flame. While we ate, Jacob spotted a coyote that dashed across the trail fifty yards away. It was one of those special scenes you’d see on a Pure Michigan commercial. Instead of taking a new loop back to the designated parking area, we decided to double back on the same route we had taken into the woods. It was on a long straightaway that Jacob and I buried the accelerator on my sleds. Even though we didn’t go very fast, (50 mph) it gave us both a glimpse into the appeal of snowmobiling: speed. It’s an intense kind of rush, even though my machines aren’t really made for high speeds. Cody Utterback, 23, is a parts specialist at Central Motor Sports in Mt. Pleasant. He has been riding snowmobiles since he was six years old. Most of his riding is done “off trail” where Utterback says he can blaze his own path through state or federal lands. “I like to find my own way,” he said. “It’s fun to climb hills and go over jumps.” Utterback says that his sled is much different than mine. While mine is a slower, more sturdy model, his has a longer track which is better suited for plowing through deep snow. He pointed to the “teeth” on the track and said “my paddles are a little bit bigger than yours, which are designed for Ready to Roar! Jacob Fountain on the grabbing the snow.” back of an Arctic Cat

New snowmobiles aren’t exactly cheap. Base models start out at about $6,500 for a 63 horsepower fan cooled, 2-stroke, while the nicer models – with much more horsepower and heated seats – can cost upwards of $12,000. “There’s quite a variety at our shop,” Utterback said, “to match almost every budget and riding preference.” The state of Michigan has more than 6,200 miles of snowmobile trails that are groomed by 150 tractors. Trail permits cost $45 and are available at most motor sports stores as well as the big box stores. The permit is a sticker that goes on the sled, just above the headlight. The Michigan DNR’s website has easy links to their trail system. I printed off a copy for the trails in Clare and Roscommon County and stuffed it in my shirt pocket in case we got lost. Even though I would have much rather taken the Fountain boys ice fishing, we still had a lot of fun on the trails. In a wintery kind of way, the bonfire, hot chocolate, and sausages were icing on the cake. Chris Zimmerman is the author of six Michigan-based novels and an independent insurance agent in Shepherd. Annual Mt. Pleasant Deer Cull Bags Ten On February 10, 2016, a deer cull was completed within the park system owned, operated, and maintained by the City of Mt. Pleasant. A total of 10 deer were harvested. All harvested venison will be donated to local charitable organizations. Complaints regarding damage to landscaping, vehicle-deer collisions, and general concerns

regarding human health and safety were received by neighboring residents. The Department of Natural Resources issued 15 deer permit tags. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) was contracted to complete the deer cull.

Mt. Pleasant Girls Basketball Faces Off with Heritage High School By: ELISE HUBEL The Mount Pleasant High School girl’s basketball team took on Heritage High School Tuesday. The Oilers were defeated, with a final score of 11-35. While the Oilers had not scored a single point at half time, they continued to compete fiercely against their opponents. Number 40, Erica Lybeer, scored the team’s first points of the game, making a three-point shot in the third period. Logan Ingram, number 10, and Lexi Strope, number 42, each scored four points in the fourth period, finishing off the team’s 11 points for the game. The Oilers take on Arthur Hill at home on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.

Bowling, the Original Social Network by Dave Lewis For my column title this week, I overheard that phrase during a commercial on the ESPN broadcast of the USBC Masters PBA tournament on Sunday, (which, by the way, was won by the youngest bowler ever… 19 years, 39 days old Anthony Simonsen 245-207 over Canadian Dan Maclelland. For the entire story, see the link at the end of the column.) For years, bowling was THE original social network! That’s why it was so popular! You heard of job openings, made friendships, developed relationships, sought the advice of teammates, learned of engagements, marriages, new kids and grandkids, complete with pictures! You “partied” with these people on a weekly basis at various bowling centers across the country! All these things, except the partying, are made much easier by various forms of social media. Technology and diversity began about then too. Technology in the form of the internet, different surface & weight block bowling balls, bowling lane surfaces, and new games/ hand-held devices for all to enjoy. Diversity in the form of a variety of sporting options for youth and young adults like soccer, softball, rocket football, etc., etc., etc. for the good of all, with the possible exception of bowling center proprietors. Bowling is in the midst of adjusting to the changes. Some areas seem easier to adapt than others, but adjust we will. We MUST… “For The Future Of The Sport!”

Local City Tournament is “rolling” along! Mission accomplished; city tournament began Monday night at Chippewa Lanes and is fully underway. First Singles & Doubles squad began Tuesday night at Riverwood Lanes. Similar squads are conducted every night at BOTH bowling centers. TEAM through Thursday & the final tournament squad of S&D at Riverwood Lanes on Friday night. (Don’t tell anyone, but Riverwood will be providing food every night this week and hosting a party on Friday night too!) All TEAM and S&D squads have openings.
