Hauck Announces Candidacy...to wrong District

Photo: Elise Hubel By S. R. COVIEO Roger Hauck has thrown his hat in the ring for the 99th District State Representative seat that will be vacated by Republican Kevin Cotter. Cotter, first elected in November of 2010, has reached his limit of three allowable terms, and therefore can’t seek re-election. This November, the 99th seat is up for grabs. Union Township Trustee Bryan Mielke, a Democrat,

announced his candidacy for the 99th District seat back on November 10th. Mielke previously ran for the seat, against then incumbent Cotter back in 2014, but lost in a close race that saw Mielke receive 56 more votes than Cotter in Isabella County (8079 to 8023), but saw Cotter win by taking 56% of the votes from the Midland districts that are also represented by the 99th seat. Ducks Unlimited Banquet to be Held on Thursday, March 10th at Bucks Run The Isabella County Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is pleased to announce a fundraising banquet at Bucks Run Golf Course on Thursday March 10th. Cocktails will be served at 6pm, followed by a gourmet dinner at 7. Chef Pete Lieber will prepare roast turkey, pork loin, and beef lasagna. Besides many awesome firearms, the committee has put together a variety of fine art items that is sure to accent the home or cabin. Ducks Unlimited was founded in the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s. Since then, 13 million acres of marshland have been conserved. In Isabella County alone, 696 acres have been created or protected. Tickets are quite reasonable: $50 for a single dinner, $75 for a couple. Attendance includes a year’s membership to Ducks Unlimited – a $35 value that includes twelve issues of Ducks Unlimited magazine. For those individuals interested in taking a group, a donation of $300 will reserve a table of eight. The committee is formed by a collection of local sportsmen who have volunteered their time and expertise for a good cause. CITY NEWS 1 in 5 U.S. Adults Experience Mental Illness

By S. R. Covieo Earlier this week local police, fire, and rescue responded to a call in the 800 block of S. Main Street that involved a community member who was on a porch roof. Several police cars, a fire engine, and ambulance blocked off and filled Main Street between High and May streets. The call lead to the eventual rescue of the self-harming victim, bringing them off the roof and assisting them in getting further mental health care. As a society we often struggle to understand mental illness, which in turn limits our overall capacity to provide the best possible care. Here in the Mt. Pleasant area we have many public safety calls requiring assistance for self-harming and potentially self-harming community members. Thankfully we also have mental health services available to individuals who need help. As a news outlet it is often difficult to balance allowing individual community members to maintain their privacy while also keeping the community informed of what is happening in our town. It is with best intentions that we feel it necessary to talk about mental health issues and to hopefully open the door for our readers to create dialogues about real life mental health happenings. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (see photo graphic), 1 in 5 five adults in the United States will experience mental illness in a given year. Numbers that large, almost 44 million adults, emphasize how important it is for us to talk openly about mental illness, and how important it is for us to know how to help our friends, neighbors, and family members. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s work together as a community to remove the societal stigma that keeps many from seeking the help they need. â&#x20AC;&#x2039; ollowing are some resources for anyone who may be seeking F help. Second Union Township Trustee Enters 99th District Race (continued from page 1) It took Republicans almost three months to announce a candidate following Mielke’s announcement, and they may have had a good reason for the wait. There has been some rumors around Mt. Pleasant that the local Republicans were grooming Keith Cotter to take over the 99th seat. If there’s any truth to the rumors, they were certainly laid to rest when Cotter lost his bid to become a member of the Mt. Pleasant city commission in the most recent election. Keith Cotter was, thought, recently re-elected as the chair of the Mt. Pleasant Planning commission at last week’s meeting after he quickly nominated himself for the position. Keith retained his chair position because no other commissioner stepped forward to challenge him, to which he responded “I am the chair.” So with both of the Cotters out of the race, the Republicans have turned to Roger Hauck as their candidate to oppose Mielke. Hauck makes for an interesting choice as, like Bryan Mielke, he is a Union Township Trustee. So on Thursday February 4th, just before 6:00 p.m., Hauck announced his candidacy to a cozy crowd at Cheers Bar and Grill. Except, that’s not entirely accurate. More honestly stated, Hauck re-announced his candidacy for the 99th seat at Cheers. Hauck had already officially announced his candidacy earlier Thursday morning at Pizza Sam’s in Midland. Pizza Sam’s, located on Main street in downtown is located in the 98th district. Oops. So, Roger Hauck traveled outside of the 99th district to announce his candidacy to the 98th district. Which brings us to a quick discussion about mistakes – basically, we all make them. All candidates show their human side, but usually if a candidate is running for office they want to announce their candidacy to potential constituents in the area, or district, they will be representing.

Mt. Pleasant Citizens Academy The third week of the city of Mt. Pleasant’s Citizens’ Academy took participants on a timely tour of the groundwater and wastewater facilities. There were, of course, questions of lead and other impurities directed toward Water Supervisor Malcolm Fox and Public Works Director John Zang. Zang, who has worked in other cities before coming to Mt. Pleasant, stated that the city of Mt. Pleasant has been pro-actively taking care of their infrastructure for years. Therefore any lead pipes that existed were replaced years ago. Week four took participants on a virtual and informational tour through the Mt. Pleasant parks and Recreation department. Participants first heard about the parks from Chris Bundy, Director of Parks and Public Spaces. Bundy

talked about all the little things that go into taking care of the city parks, including mowing, restroom upkeep, bridge maintenance, and turf control. Participants were provided with large maps of each of the local parks, including an overview of the area containing the recently popular Indian Pines Park (see the map below). Ryan Longoria, Recreations Director, shared a little about the history of the department, current programs, and potential future programs. Spencer McKellar, PEAK Coordinator, spoke about PEAK’s programs, educational value, and community tie-ins. Recreation Coordinator Carol Moody shared about the Farmers Market, which is entering its 43rd year here in town.

3rd Annual Man vs. Mountain 5k Obstacle Course Run Over two hundred community members participated in the 3rd Annual Man vs. Mountain 5k Obstacle Course Run in Mt. Pleasant over the weekend. Staggered heats of around 30 entrants started the course every ten minutes for over an hour. Kaitlin Otteman and ‘The Beginnings Prophecy’

By ELISE HUBEL Local author Kaitlin Otteman signed copies of her book on Monday at The Malt Shop. Self-published, ‘The Beginnings Prophecy’ is Otteman’s first completed book. While having a book published is a feat for an author of any age, Otteman’s age makes the achievement even greater. At only 13-years-old, Otteman has become a published writer long before most. Otteman said she has had a passion for writing since she was six. While writing has always been a part of her life, she said that this is the longest piece she has ever completed. The Beginnings Prophecy is a fantasy novel. It tells the tale of a girl and her four friends who venture into the fantasy world to take on seven fairies.

Publishing her first book has not slowed down the young author. She is already working on a sequel to the story. “I can’t answer if it will go past the sequel,” Otteman said, “the story will be as long as I feel it needs to be.” Otteman is in the 7th grade, attending West Intermediate. Other than writing, Otteman is active in her school choir, a part of the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), and used to do hip-hop dance at Off-Broadway Performing Arts Studio. In the future she hopes to attend Central Michigan University and pursue a career in either writing or editing. ‘The Beginnings Prophecy’ will be available for purchase again Feb. 14 at The Malt Shop when Otteman will be signing copies from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Copies are also available locally at The Book Shelf, located at 1014 S. Mission.

Local Artists’ Exhibit Opening at Helios By SAM VILLARREAL Helios Art Gallery in downtown Mt. Pleasant opened their doors in December with their first exhibit “Community.” The gallery sold 25 different art pieces from four different artists. The next exhibit titled “Insight” will include works from 11 artists. Of the 11 artists, three are recent Central Michigan University graduates - Kristi Cranson, Erin Horning, and Jamie Morse. Because they graduated within the past 12 months, Helios allows them to showcase their work and gain experience for half of the normal commission price. Three CMU employees will also be producing works including Ryan Flesher, Kris Sanford, and Mike Volker. Other Michigan established artists showcasing will be Ted Evans, Kathy Jones, Sam Soet, Rebecca Zeiss, and owner of Helios, Al Wildey. “Insight” will consist of a lot of personal work that has to do with “interior impulses.” Opening night is Friday, February 12 from 5-7pm. It is open to the public and admission is free.

New Music Program at Morey Montessori PSA The Morey Montessori Public School Academy (PSA) encourages both self-directed learning and high academic standards. Until recently, the school did not have a music program. A seventh-grade student, Sasha DeLellis, recognized the need for a music program and, with the help of her father and the Head of the School, applied for a grant to begin the program. The goal of this project is to positively affect current and future students by enhancing their intellectual and emotional skills. Research has shown a link between music education and the building of these skills. Recognizing the need for a program such as this, the Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation awarded the Morey Montessori PSA a grant from the Kellogg Youth Fund. The funds were used to purchase an electric piano and various hand-held instruments to start the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new music program. More than 100 students are currently benefitting from the program.

Sacred Heart Annual SHAgala Fundraiser a Success! By SAM VILLARREAL On February 6, 2016 Sacred Heart Academy hosted their annual fundraiser, SHAgala. Hosted in the school’s gymnasium, the event was sold out as it has been in the past. This year’s theme was “South of the Border.” There was a photo booth, a Cantina to get drinks, and a photographer who took pictures of the guests with their friends. There were more than 400 guests in attendance that included parents of past and present students, staff members, and alumni. Everyone enjoyed an evening of great food and conversation. The event began at 4:30 allowing for guests to begin bidding on the silent auction items and buy raffle tickets. Everyone sat for dinner at 6:30 and an opening speech was given from co-chairs, Wendy Endres & Marcy Hosking. They thanked all the attendees, volunteers and donors. Their motto for the night was “Bid high and bid often.” Bishop Cistone then spoke and said a blessing and their food was served. The live auction began after dinner and had 50 different items including helicopter lessons, a 24-month car lease, a one week stay in Cancun, Mexico, and even a Golf and Lunch with Bishop Cistone & Father Loren. The silent auction went on throughout the night and included different items such as pieces of art made by students, sports memorabilia, jewelry, golf clubs, and homemade clothing. Last year’s SHAgala raised a total of $222,000. This left for a dividend of about $500 per student. Because all the money made from the event goes directly back into the school, it can go anywhere from tuition to a teacher’s salary. While the numbers are still being tallied from this year’s event, they are expecting just as much as last year, if not more. This is Sacred Heart’s single largest fundraiser each year and it never fails to bring in a lot of money for the school.

MPHS Hockey Team Battles in League Play By SAM VILLARREAL The Mount Pleasant High School varsity hockey team had their sixth league game, against Saginaw Heritage, on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, at the Isabella Community Events (ICE) Arena. The Oilers entered play with 15 wins and 5 losses on the season, but only 3-2 in the highly competitive Saginaw Valley League. The Hawks defeated the Oilers after a rough game. The only goal in the first period for Mount Pleasant was made by Mitchell Haines with an assist by Nodin Jackson. Each team had one penalty at the end of the first with a 1-2 game. In the second period the Oilers werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to get a goal while Saginaw Heritage made three. The game also became a bit rougher as Saginaw got four penalties in the period, one of which being a 10-minute for misconduct, while Mount Pleasant only had one. The final period allowed for another goal from Mount Pleasant. Kyle Trucks scored with an assist from Zach Heeke. Five penalties were called in the period, three of which were given to the Oilers. The final score was 2-7. The last scheduled home game of the season will take place on Friday, February 26 at 7pm against the Tri-Valley Titans.

CMU Athletes Make Time for Local Children at VML

Members of five Central Michigan University athletic teams met with local children Saturday to discuss sports. The college students represented CMU’s football, soccer, gymnastics, golf, and track/cross country teams. The event, which took place at the Veterans Memorial Library, began with the athletes speaking as a panel. Children were able to learn about the students and their sports. A short trivia session was held, hosted by the family coordinator for the library district. The children got to answer questions regarding the sports that were represented, as well as CMU athletics in general. Following the trivia, each sport split into groups to perform activities with the children. Activities included catch with the football players, a duct tape balancing beam with the gymnasts, and putting lessons with the golfers. The children were also able to get the autographs of the sports players. A photo wall was set up with signs hanging on the walls reading “Keep Calm and Fire Up Chips.” At the end of the event a raffle was held. Prizes included various CMU athletics items including a t-shirt. The event was also tied into the library environment, with a focus on reading. The children were taught a CMU cheer, “Go, Fire up chips!” This was then amended to “Go, Fire up reading,” as a way to inspire the local children to get involved in reading.

City Champs to be crowned next week! No matter which team you root for, that was a pretty good Super Bowl championship game this year – Congratulations to the champion Denver Broncos! Locally(next week), 16 champions will be crowned over five days in our MP USBC City Tournament. Four(4) different Champs,(TEAM, Singles, Doubles, & All-Events), two(2) divisions(OPEN & Women’s), and an actual & handicap champion will be determined in each category. (Optional Scratch Prize Lists available in each OPEN event. Bowlers must enter before their 1st tournament event.) The Opening Ceremonies begin the tournament next Monday. TEAM entries are (again) lagging behind last years’ total of 54, (currently, 37 teams are entered-27 OPEN/10 Women’s). S&D entries are also behind last year’s number of 89, (currently, 63 S&D-47 OPEN/16 Women’s). There’s no limit to how many times an individual may enter either event, TEAM and/or S&D. Four(4) TEAM Event squads, Chippewa Lanes, 6:20pm, Monday-Thursday. Singles & Doubles begins Tuesday,6:15pm at Riverwood Lanes, concluding Friday night. All Monday thru Friday evening certified leagues take city tournament week off to enter. At this point, all squads remain open. Yet to enter? It’s not too late. Local High School Bowling: (MPHS & Shepherd) Monday the MPHS girls & boys both won their match against Flint Northwest. High games: Emily Onica(137 & 120) and Liza Harrisson-Waters(129 &128). For the boys: Basil Naganashe(253 & 204) and Jacob Baker(237) led the way. The next MPHS match is Wednesday in Flint. Last Saturday, the Shepherd teams competed at 300 Bowl(Alma). The girls lost a close one to Ovid-Elsie, then rebounded well to beat Breckenridge. The Mt. Pleasant wrestling team is gearing up for districts this week. Team districts were held last night in Owosso,and individual districts will be this weekend in Gaylord. Last weekend the team placed 7th overall in the Saginaw Valley League Meet. Seven MPHS wrestlers, shown above, earned individual medals during the SVL meet.
