Frannie Franks Coffee Cakes happened by accident, says Jill McEnroe. It wasn’t until June of 2011 when the true influence of Frannie was known to Jill and her son.

Jill’s mom, Frannie, could often be found baking, wearing pearls and heels, with the aroma of cinnamon wafting through her home.

“My inspiration was my mother, an amazing, beautiful, funny and out-of-this-world cook,” said Jill McEnroe, President of Frannie Frank’s Coffee Cakes.

The ‘Franks’ comes from her grandfather. When her son thought about enlisting in the Air Force to follow in his Grandpa’s footsteps, Jill enlisted him in the business instead.

A graphic designer by day, Jill made her first coffee cakes using Frannie’s vintage recipe book, for her boss’ birthday and her husband’s office. Soon the orders came rolling in. “My inspiration to make jam started as a little girl, Darrell Tindal and Andrea Schnetzler while helping Grandma Taylor with canning, and watching my Grandpa successfully run a small town grocery store in Missouri,” said Andrea Schnetzler.

Now instead of being Grandpa’s Kitchen Chef, Andrea paired with Darrell Tindal as ‘Duo Kitchen Chefs’ to form The Berry Nutty Farm.

The Berry Nutty Farm is a perfect mixture of both of their passions in life. Darrell brings the art of business, marketing, and his love for horticulture and gourmet food. Andrea has a zeal for cooking and design, with an extensive knowledge of horticulture.

REAL PEOPLE. REAL PROGRESS. Diane Houk’s love of puppets and entertaining children of all ages began when she was a Girl Scout in Independence. A trip to the Hazelle Rollins’ Puppet Factory in Kansas City was the beginning of her lifelong love of the art of puppetry. Although she was sick the day of the fieldtrip, her Girl Scout leader, Martha Ingram, taught the troop to make puppets and perform puppet shows. From there it continued to grow. That was the inspiration.

Diane’s passion grew to puppet collecting, and she became known in the community as a hard-working advocate for the art of puppet-making and puppeteers. This brought many experiences, such as giving Paul Mesner, a nationally known Kansas City puppeteer, his first opportunity to perform in public at the opening of the Sermon Center in Independence. Diane and Paul’s relationship led to the creation of the Puppet Guild where Diane served on the board for nine years. At that time Goodwill asked if the Puppet Guild would be interested in taking several boxes of puppet pieces that had been donated.

The puppet pieces ended up being what was left of the Hazelle Rollins Puppet Factory and several boxes were actually an 18-wheeler flatbed trailer. After moving the puppet pieces from two locations they settled at their final home in Independence.

The Puppet Guild was building a puppet institute tailored to children and fostering enjoyment and interest in puppets. It took the Guild seven years and much dedication to save the $10,000 that is was required to open what today is the Puppetry Arts Institute. It was started on October 13, 2000 in Diane’s old stomping ground, the Englewood Arts District in Independence. It features the Hazelle Rollins puppets as well as many others from around the world.

The Puppetry Arts Institute hosts Kindergartners from all over the Kansas City metro area each year to come and make their own puppets and enjoy a puppet show, often put on by Diane herself. They are open daily for children and families to come and create their own puppets, featuring monthly puppet shows that each have their own unique story.

The idea behind the Puppetry Arts Institute was to create a place that children knew as soon as they walked in that it was made just for them. Diane and the rest of the Puppet Guild have certainly made that a reality. Another example of Independence: Real People. Real Progress.

This was the final stop on Truman’s 1948 Whistlestop Campaign. After leaving the Presidency in January 1953, he was welcomed home here by 8,500 admirers. Today, the depot is an Amtrak stop and home to the Jackson County Genealogical Society Research Library.

Beginning at the Truman Home Ticket Center at Main and Truman Roads, the 2.7-mile trail includes 43 plaques embedded in the sidewalks through the National Historic Landmark District. Brochures are available at the Truman Ticket Center and the Visitor Experience Center.

TRUMAN MEMORIAL BUILDING 416 W. Maple • 816.325.7843 In 1926, this facility was erected through the efforts of Harry Truman and other civic leaders as a tribute to those who died in WWI. Renovated and rededicated in 2002, it serves as a War Memorial and recreation center. Included are Veterans Hall and video program, meeting and banquet space, plus an auditorium and gymnasium.

WILD ABOUT HARRY “I’m Just Wild About Harry” was the campaign song for the 1948 presidential bid by Harry S Truman. Bet you didn’t know this: it was really a Broadway show tune in 1921, (music by Eubie Blake, lyrics by Noble Sissle) in Shuffle Along, the first financially successful production featuring all African Americans. Today you can visit the shop of the same name on Historic Independence Square.

It was also home to the Waggoner family, founders of Waggoner Gates Mill, from 1879 –1976.

Extensively renovated in the 1890s, it contains many original furnishings and accessories. Gift shop located in the Carriage House.

FRANK JAMES

It is a known fact that Frank James, of the infamous James Gang and brother of Jesse James, was held prisoner at the Independence jail after his surrender to the Governor at Jefferson City in 1882. During his incarceration in what is now known as the 1859 Jail & Marshal’s Home Museum, his cell was never locked. In fact the jailer’s wife made dinner for the famous prisoner. Because he feared grave robbers, his ashes were finally laid to rest at Hill Park Cemetery in 1944 using his mother-in-laws maiden name.

LANGUAGES The languages heard along the culturally diverse Santa Fe Trail included English, Spanish, German, French, Dutch, and those of several American Indian tribes.

ANXIETY IV Early Hereford breeders Charles Gudgell and Thomas A. Simpson of Missouri imported cattle, one of which was a bull named “Anxiety IV”. He lived in Independence, on a farm on Gudgell Road. “Anxiety IV” has been credited with 99% of the high-quality beef in the Kansas City Area, as well as the migration of quality beef to Omaha, NE and Chicago, IL.

REAL PEOPLE. REAL PROGRESS. Tom and Sue Waters, lifelong residents of Independence, met in kindergarten. They could not have foreseen a successful family printing business in their future.

They began dating while at Fort Osage High School, got married in 1980, and had two daughters. Today they own a 115-year-old building on the Historic Independence Square and operate Corporate Copy Print (CCP) now in its’ 20th year of business.

“I remember day one,” commented Tom Waters. After working 15 years in the printing industry he was ready to start his own enterprise.

“We were thrilled to be able to open our doors here in Independence,” Sue added. She had spent 18 years in the insurance business but when the insurance company was sold and Tom and Susan Waters she was without a job, she planned to help Tom at the print shop for just a couple of months. That was 19 years ago and she’s been hands-on ever since.

Then in 2004 their daughter Amy was hired as a temporary graphics designer.

She recently celebrated her tenth year as a very talented graphic artist at CCP. Within a couple of years they needed more space for the business. One day after leaving a Chamber meeting he drove through the Independence Square.

He saw a ‘for sale’ sign. The Square had been neglected and going downhill for a couple of decades, but a second drive around the block did the trick.

“I knew that Ken and Cindy McClain had bought a couple of buildings and had just recently completed the renovation of the old Katz building into the beautiful Ophelia’s. In addition, there were a couple of other buildings that had been remodeled.”

The Waters ended up buying the building on Main Street in 2003. Since then they have purchased two nearby buildings and recently modernized, adding sixty solar panels to the print shop building.

“Independence has a tremendous heritage and the Square is still the center of that history,” explained Tom. “The synergy and momentum of renovation here in the uptown area doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.”

In 2011 CCP was awarded Small Business of the Year at the Independence Economic Development annual meeting. In 2012 the Waters were honored by the Salvation Army with a Doing the Most Good award. others, stood at the Historic Truman Courthouse on Labor Day 1992,to see Presidential candidate Bill Clinton. They anxiously awaited the evening news and what they saw was something quite different. Images of a tired rundown Independence Square were a far cry from the song that echoed through the Square that day.

“I heard the crowd singing ‘Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow’ and I looked around and didn’t see much of a tomorrow,” Ken McClain said. And so it began. “Don’t Stop” by Fleetwood Mac was their inspiration and remains their theme today.

Ken and Cindy McClain moved to Independence in 1984 and were excited to hear talk of the renovation of the Square. After almost a decade, no progress had been made and they realized they needed to do something. In 1992 they began buying buildings around the Square and in 1996 they purchased what is now Ophelia’s.

“Our idea for the building was to open a large restaurant with banquet space as well as an inn. We wanted it to be a place for people from all over the metro area to enjoy, as well as a place for visitors to come stay.”

The hope was also to attract others to open businesses on the Square.

Unfortunately, the opposite happened and many began going out of business.

That caused Ken and Cindy to purchase more buildings and add more businesses to their group including Courthouse Exchange, Wild About Harry and Clinton’s Drugstore.

After almost 20 years, lots of resources and an immense amount of time and hard work, the McClains have built more than 16 businesses including eight restaurants, four retail shops, a movie theater, bowling alley, art gallery and a yoga and pilates studio.

It’s safe to say that Ken and Cindy McClain have definitely given the Square a tomorrow in which the community can have pride.

They are the real people and the real progress that make Independence the city it is.

The popular Kid’s Winter Wonderland area returns, (from 3pm-5pm), offering free children’s Christmas activities such as letters to Santa, face painting and dancing. Santa from 3:30pm-5pm. Hot kettle corn, hot cocoa and more will be sold. Strolling carolers will entertain the crowd from 4pm-5pm.

Despite advice to become a lawyer from Harry Truman, whom he met while working in a drugstore, Henning went on to write for such series as Fibber McGee & Molly, Burns and Allen, The Real McCoys, and The Andy Griffith Show.
