Dear Friend of CSL, On behalf of the CSL Board of Directors, staff, and, most importantly, the 15,000+ neighbors we serve annually, thank you for your generous support. Your support is helping CSL build a stronger community by lifting up the most vulnerable among us. When even just one person’s life is improved, everyone’s life is made stronger as a result. 2015 was a year of exciting growth for CSL. As you’ll see in this Annual Report, we debuted new programs and services designed to strengthen our programmatic offerings. Thanks to your generous support, CSL operates one of, if not the most expansive social service program in the metropolitan area. By layering services related to emergency assistance, employment, housing, and financial services, we are providing a well-rounded approach to helping families attain economic stability. It is a pleasure to work with you, our loyal supporters, in connecting your philanthropic gifts of time, talent, and treasure, and turning them into real, lasting impact in our community. Your support truly makes a difference, and we encourage you to read this report and learn more about the good work we accomplish when we work together.

Sincerely,

Doug Cowan President & Chief Executive Officer cowand@cslcares.org 816.912.4484

Jazzmyne was homeless, a refugee from Hurricane Katrina, along with grandparents Bill and Patricia. After living in a shelter for a year, they moved to the Kansas City area only to be exposed to more adversity, which led to more homelessness. There were also growing concerns of whether Patricia would survive open heart surgery. By then, Jazzmyne had lived a lifetime of extreme challenges while still in her childhood. CSL showed up in the form of compassion, support, and much needed stability for Jazzmyne and her family. Thanks to CSL’s Permanent Supportive Housing Initiative, she has a place she can call home. Her family is helped with food, clothes, school supplies, has benefited from the Tennies for Kids program, and a new car.

6

Jazzmyne volunteers her time at CSL during school supply distribution.

IMPACT: Changing Futures through Emergency Assistance

CSL’s Emergency Assistance Program supports individuals and families like Jazzmyne’s who are in need of the most basic resources as a result of unexpected circumstances. In 2015, more than $2 million in food, clothing, school supplies, Christmas gifts, medical support, transportation assistance, utility assistance, and housing assistance were distributed to 6,071 families (15,374 individuals) throughout Eastern Jackson County. CSL’s Emergency Assistance Program provided the following support in 2015: • Distributed $603,663 of Food and $88,389 of Clothing • Delivered more than 7,000 Presents to Children for Christmas • Distributed 1,220 Christmas Meal Baskets to Families • Ensured 10,000 Children Received School Supplies • Gave $147,429 in Eye Exams, Hearing Aids, Glasses, Dental Services and Prescriptions to Families we Serve • Provided $17,897 in Household and Personal Care Items • Provided $23,473 in Transportation Assistance • Distributed 24,000 Books through a Partnership with First Book • 1,500 Pairs of Shoes to Children through Tennies for Kids Program

After experiencing domestic violence, Angelica found herself homeless. While she slept in her car, she found shelter for her children, placing three at the Salvation Army and two others at a Synergy shelter.

IMPACT: Changing Futures through Housing Counseling

CSL’s Housing Counseling Program supports individuals and families like Angelica’s who are either homeless or at risk of becoming homeless (through foreclosure or eviction). Through the Housing Counseling Program, families are helped with permanent housing, tent-landlord advocacy, housing counseling, budgeting, and rent assistance. CSL’s Housing Counseling Program provided the following support in 2015: • Served 135 Families by Providing $153,000 in Housing Assistance • Provided Housing Counseling to 397 Families • Provided 1,154 Families $304,666 in Utility Assistance • Taught Quarterly Homebuyer Education Courses • Supported 16 Families through the Permanent Supportive Housing Initiative • Supported 43 Families through the Family Stability Initiative

Angelica has a brain tumor and cyst which make full-time employment next to impossible to maintain due to pain and medical complications. She is a hard worker that always makes ends meet regardless of the adversity her family is facing. Angelica continues to work toward economic stability and is an amazing advocate for herself. When she is able, she works as a mobile car mechanic. Thanks CSL’s Permanent Supportive Housing Initiative, Angelica and her children have had a place they can call home since 2012. 7

Tammy

Tammy was a stay-athome mom and had not worked outside the home for some time. Following her divorce, she found herself jobless and needing a steady income. When Tammy came to CSL, Work Express helped her create a résumé, she used the computer lab, and was given job leads.

Tammy and her daughter also received help with school supplies, Christmas support, and emergency assistance. It was important to Tammy that she found a job that allowed her to be home when her daughter got out of school. Through perseverance, she found a job with the Independence School District. Tammy is giving back by working as a volunteer for CSL.

8

IMPACT: Changing Futures through Work Express

CSL’s Work Express Program promotes economic stability and is the largest non-profit, no-fee-for-service employment program available in Eastern Jackson County. It supports individuals like Tammy who are in need of résumé writing, computer skills, job training, work clothes and equipment, job referrals, job readiness, job retention, interview skills, mentoring, and temporary transportation for interviews and initial employment. Work Express provides employment counseling to more than 2,000 individuals each year throughout Eastern Jackson County. CSL’s Work Express Program provided the following support in 2015: • 428 Clients Obtained Employment • 10,365 Job Referrals were Provided to Clients • 228 Clients Participated in Mock Interview Sessions • 1,046 Clients Completed a Work Express Class • 785 Clients Received Help Completing a Résumé • 1,860 Clients Received One-on-One Computer Skills Coaching • 6,409 Donated Professional Clothing Items were Provided to Job Seekers through the Work Express Clothing Boutique • Expanded Services to Lee's Summit and Raytown

Jeff is a single Dad of three children whose family was disrupted by substance abuse. This led to separation and homelessness.

IMPACT: Changing Futures

through Financial Opportunity Center CSL’s Financial Opportunity Center supports individuals and families like Jeff’s who are ready to take another step in strengthening their financial stability. In 2015, thanks to a partnership with Local Investment Support Corporation and United Way of Greater Kansas City, CSL was selected, through a highly competitive grant process, to establish the fourth Financial Opportunity Center in Kansas City (the first outside of Kansas City proper). The FOC helps families reduce debt, increase income and begin to build net worth. To support the growth of this program, CSL hired a Financial Coach and a Career Coach dedicated to help families through their journey to economic stability! CSL Provided the Following Financial Support to Clients in 2015: • Served 127 Clients through Budgeting Classes • Provided more than $105,000 in loans (auto loans, pay day loan consolidation, etc.) through Holy Rosary Credit Union to clients with an average credit score of 563. Since the pilot program in 2014, CSL has only had two clients default. • Helped 75 Clients with Tax Preparation through United Way’s VITA Tax Program

When Jeff and his kids graduated from the Hillcrest Transitional Housing Program, they were referred to CSL’s Family Stability Initiative. CSL assisted with a deposit, rent, and utilities to move into their own place. The family is now stably housed and Jeff is employed full-time. He recently used his tax refund to purchase a used vehicle, his last major obstacle to keeping employment and all the necessary functions of being a single dad. For the first time in years, his future looks bright with the promise of financial stability, family security, and growth.
