Purpose Statement

To make meaningful and lasting change in peoples' lives.

Dear Friends of CSL, 2016, our 100th year in existence, was a magical time for CSL. On January 1, 2016, I was very nervous about capitalizing on the opportunity provided by this historic anniversary. My hope was that, 365 days later, we would all look back and think that we had used our milestone year to move the organization forward. Boy, did we ever! As I reflect on the year that was our Centennial Celebration, I’m not sure I’ll ever have this type of professional experience in my life again. As the kids would say, “I was feelin’ all the feels!” The way our community embraced CSL’s birthday year was humbling and inspiring. We received major recognitions for our work from Nonprofit Connect, the City of Independence (Harry S Truman Public Service Award Commission), and Truman Heartland Community Foundation. We hosted dozens of events to celebrate our community’s collective caring over the last 100 years (see special insert), and worked to define what CSL’s second century of service holds in store. I’d be remiss not to thank the board of directors, our workforce of nearly 300 workers, and you, our loyal supporters, for making 2016 a year to remember. I hope this Annual Report tells the story of CSL’s anniversary, the important work we’re undertaking, and how important you are to our success. Thank you for your extraordinary commitments to our community. Sincerely,

Doug Cowan President & Chief Executive Officer cowand@cslcares.org 816.912.4484

CRYSTAL , who is a 35 year old

mother to eight children, five of whom live in her home, was referred to CSL by the Independence School District in 2014. Her family was at risk for transiency, so CSL paired Crystal with a social worker who quickly learned that Crystal was chronically homeless and had one child with a disabling condition. Although she worked tirelessly at the same job for nine years she was simply unable to meet all the financial needs of her large family. CSL’s social worker quickly qualified Crystal for CSL’s permanent supportive housing program. Today, CSL pays 90% of her rent every month freeing up income in Crystal’s budget to provide for her family in ways she’s never been able to do before. In April of this past year, Crystal tested among the highest for aptitude in nursing and participated in CSL’s CNA training course. After completing 10 weeks of intensive training, Crystal is now a Certified Nursing Assistant and is gainfully employed at Truman Medical Center Lakewood making $16/hour including full benefits for her family.

6

After years of being lovingly referred to as “grandma” by her children because their classmates thought she looked older than she was due to her toothless smile, Crystal has just been fitted for a full set of dentures! Crystal will be among the first to benefit from a new oral care initiative at CSL sponsored by the Health Care Foundation for Greater Kansas City and the Eastland Giving Circle. Crystal’s life has forever changed!

Stabilizing Families

Breaking the Toxic Lending Cycle

JANE has been a CSL client for

nearly four years. She and her family were first referred to CSL at a time when both she and her two daughters were homeless. Shortly after joining the CSL family our team learned that, due to a mental health disability, Jane and her family qualified for our Permanent Supportive Housing Program. Thanks to the support of CSL paying their monthly rent, Jane and her two daughters have been comfortably housed for the last three years allowing them freedom to focus on strengthening their family and their finances. As is the case with many families struggling to climb out of poverty, Jane had a title loan on her previous car with an interest rate of 179.88%!

With Jane desiring to attend community college to help move her family forward, and her eldest daughter being offered a scholarship to attend O’Hara High School, a more reliable and affordable car was desperately needed by their family. One of our team members quickly connected Jane and her family with Pat Henshaw at Holy Rosary Credit Union where she was able to qualify for an auto loan with a 14% interest rate! In the last few months, Jane has been able to successfully pay off her title loan from her previous car and is now attending classes at Blue River Community College where she hopes to become a Para Professional for special education students at a local school district. Jane and her family are well on their way to experiencing long-lasting change and achieving their dreams!

THANKS TO ALL OUR CSL DONORS

un from the S ndation Fou

CSL is grateful to the nearly 2,000 donors who contributed in-kind and cash gifts to the organization in 2016; we raised nearly $4.5 million (a 23% increase from 2015)! We could not impact the families we serve without the faithful support of so many individuals, foundations, corporations, churches, and municipalities that comprise our donor family. A warm thanks goes to the following donors for their support in 2016.
