Dear Friends, WE HAVE NOW ENTERED A NEW SEASON in the church year called, Epiphany. Epiphany comes from the Greek word, epiphaneia meaning “appearance” or “manifestation”. The Feast of the Epiphany takes place on January 6th and the season continues until Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent on February 17th. In many European countries where Christmas tree decorations are replaced with small straw stars and lit stars are placed in the front window of individual homes, Epiphany is called The Season of Light. In the Eastern Church, Epiphany is sometimes called The Season of Wonder. Whatever we call it, for the next 6 weeks, the Sunday Scripture readings for Epiphany will reveal who the Christ Child is. The symbols of Epiphany are the magi and the star of Bethlehem. The ancient 1st century manuscript called, The Gospel of Matthew explains that the magi left their home on a search. They were non-Jews inside a Jewish story. Matthew’s description of the Christ Child shatters religious tradition by bringing strangers into the spotlight. He says that throughout his whole life, this Christ Child will shatter all the old boundaries of religion and race, social class, status and gender. And this Christ will call everyone son, daughter, sister, brother and friend. With no road map to a clear destination, the magi trusted in the light of a star given by God who gave birth to a sacred love story which would make room for everyone. The story of Epiphany fulfills the ancient prophesy of Isaiah who once said:

“Don’t look back – don’t look back Do not consider the things of old for I am about to do a new thing. So – arise and shine, for those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.”

PARISH STAFF

As we step over the threshold into this new year, is it possible that the same may be true for us – that God may be doing a new thing in our midst, and whatever that might be for us – we too shall arise and shine. We shall run and not be weary. We shall walk together and we will not faint this Epiphany or ever.

LAST MONTH I JOINED THE THRONGS of people who went to see the movie Avatar. While I had heard some mixed reviews (one critic saying it was simply an updated version of the 1990 film, Dances With Wolves, starring Kevin Costner), I had a gut feeling I would enjoy it. The critic in me could see a number of things that didn’t sit well – an awkward use of aboriginal-type characters and some weird script writing. But there was an embedded spirituality that at times was awe inspiring and there was a fantastic use of action and drama in a fantasy setting. Even one of those elements would have been enough for me. But what really drew me in the most was the core of the positive and negative reported hype I had heard; that it was, at times, a mediocre story supported by cutting edge and bold new technology. It was said that the producers needed to make at least $285 million dollars just to break even. I guess they don’t have to worry about that anymore, now that it has broken the 1 billion dollar barrier. The venture into something new and untried was a huge gamble. Some of the technology was out there but was still not advanced enough to capture the vision of director James Cameron or do it justice. Waiting and developing became part of the plan. In the end, this film has opened up a whole new spectrum of possibilities for the film community. Could it all have been done differently – sure it could have – but it probably wouldn’t have pushed an envelope that needed pushing, opening up a whole new level of possibility. As we begin a new year and decade, I hope we discover that we can remain encouraged in the face of missteps, heartened by challenges that present themselves and that our lives are enriched by the new and sometimes bold initiatives that seem both possible and exciting.

A Word from the Wardens We begin the New Year with many opportunities and challenges. On February 7th we shall begin a limited time experiment with two Sunday morning services instead of the current three. The return to two services, on a nine Sunday trial basis, is a response to a number of factors including: the unanimous recommendation of the Worship Committee; the desire by many to bring together what have become two separate congregations; financial considerations; declining attendance; and the workload that three services can mean for a reduced clergy. Remember that just two years ago we had three ordained members of clergy who could celebrate Communion. For financial reasons this was reduced to two in 2007 and, following the departure of The Reverend Greg Carpenter this year, will be reduced to one. In the normal course an incoming Curate may not be ordained to the priesthood for up to 12 months and, until his/her priestly ordination, is not able to celebrate Communion. A new Liturgy incorporating aspects of both the 9:15 and 11 am services will be introduced and will develop and evolve during the trial period. Provision is being made for constructive feedback and an open Parish Forum meeting will be held for discussion and to receive feedback about the two Sunday format. The date for this meeting has yet to be announced. While the number of services held in a church is a prerogative of the Incumbent it was decided by clergy and Corporation to seek input and feedback of parishioners on this issue.

being financially viable and are unable to sustain their operations. While Christ Church Deer Park has the benefit of financial reserves through our various funds (Endowment, 1870, and Building) we cannot rely on these resources indefinitely. The Operating Deficits that we have been sustaining for the past several years cannot continue. Now is the time to address this issue, develop a realistic financial plan and to take action. The challenge to each and every one of us is to become more actively involved in the life and activities of the church, to support the clergy, wardens and the various ministry heads at CCDP. In addition we must continue to provide financial support and to be willing to step forward, without being asked, and participate as a volunteer in one or more of our many activities. No longer can we “leave it to the next person” as the next person is you. The future of your church is what we collectively elect to make it. Annual Meeting of Vestry

The aforementioned Parish Forum, a successor to the former Parish Council, will begin after the co-chairs are elected at the Vestry in February. As described in the Information Evening session last September, the Parish Forum is expected to consist of approximately twenty persons and will have three meetings per year. The mandate of the Forum is to provide advice to the clergy and corporation on key issues that are important to the congregation and central to their interest. This will be an exciting opportunity to focus on some of the key challenges facing not only us at Christ Church Deer Park but other established and mainline Christian denominations in Canada as well. These include declining attendance and lower Sunday collections at a time when the need for our help in the community and elsewhere has never been greater. Going forward we have to face the inevitable fact that some churches will have to merge or close as they have ceased

Feel like being more involved? Don’t have much time, but want to help out? Feeling new, but want to join in? Been here a while, but haven’t been involved? Have ideas to share?

Community Ministry

Join us! Every year before Vestry, the Nominating Committee seeks out people to serve on, or chair ministries. This year we have a new idea. Join us. There’s life here in what we do, how we get together, what gets done. Every group at CCDP welcomes members, but this year we are targeting some in particular. Communications: Feel like helping with the Herald? Could you add parish events to the website every month? Are you willing to photograph events with the Parish camera? Have you any marketing ideas? Have you an interest or experience in PR? Feel like you could help, learn or make a difference? Community: Do you like organizing social events? Do you like helping out at social events? Would you add supplies for events to your shopping list (and be reimbursed) Would you maintain the coffee team schedule? Could you buy supplies for the coffee hour (and be reimbursed)? Would you sign up to take on a month as part of the coffee hour team? Is there something else you see the need for in reaching out to our community? Chancel Guild: Would you like to learn more about the rituals of the service? Are you interested in learning more about flower arranging? Does the contemplation and spirituality of caring for the sacramental objects appeal to you? If you have answered yes to any of these, you are ready to join us. Please call or email: David Thornton, chair nominating committee, 416-489-6740 davidthornton@sympatico.ca or Jenny Rieger, 416-920-9296 jarieger@sympatico.ca

Holy Grounds Café IT HAS BEEN A WONDERFUL RELIEF and show of support, to simply announce in Church that we need volunteers to step up to help and, voila, by the end of the day, the calendar is full of volunteers! This activity, and your kind support, has saved hours of telephone work. You have volunteered to take shifts on duty. Thank you. Please continue to offer your assistance. Refreshment time is a valuable opportunity for fellowship that everyone enjoys. I am so grateful to you for creating some delightful social coffee time!

Pancake Supper Our annual Pancake Supper will be held on Feb. 16th this year. This festive and fun celebration is well attended and enjoyed by all... please save the date, and plan to come. If you have time to work the kitchen, please contact Samantha Caravan or Jayne Miles, through the Parish office.

Church Community Ministry Since 2003, it has been my absolute pleasure to work amongst you, ensuring that the Holy Grounds Café and our special events are well planned and well attended. My family and I shall miss this key role in the Church ministry, and I am thrilled to have had the honour of coming to know many of you. Thank you for supporting us. Our family has worked to do our very best towards creating a comfortable, working setting for you to mingle in and enjoy. Are you looking for a wonderful way, to support our Church community? Please remember that I am planning to step out of the role of Chair at our upcoming Vestry meeting. As for the “events” portion of the Chair’s role, we need some fresh ideas, and more hands. We have had some annual events that I hope will continue, but we also need to add some new events. Please consider leading us in the future of events at CCDP. Know that you won’t be alone in making wonderful things happen. Please contact me if you are interested. Jayne Miles Simpson 416-489-2400

From the Upper Room

THE YEARS SEEM TO SLIP AWAY faster these days - this past year of PromiseLand has been a hive of activity. Drama continues to play a large part in PromiseLand, and over the year there were dramas on Epiphany, Palm Sunday and of course Christmas. The summer drama camp was lots of fun. The children have participated fully in services as readers and intercessors. The Cherub Choir was born and the children have enjoyed learning new songs for worship. Even the weather didn’t dampen the children’s enthusiasm when we celebrated the Blessing of the Animals indoors with Bishop Tottenham. I met Bubbles the Japanese fighting fish and Cocoa a brand new kitten. Now we look forward to Confirmation at the Easter Vigil on Saturday April 3rd at 7pm. Bishop Patrick Yu will join us as some young people take the next exciting step on their life long journey of faith exploration. I have been privileged to be part of Christ Church and especially part of the ongoing faith development of so many wonderful children. As some of you know I have been made an ordinand, which means that on Sunday May 2, at 4:30 pm I will be ordained to the diaconate by Archbishop Colin Johnson. For me this is the fulfillment of a ten-year journey. There have been no definite decisions made about PromiseLand but, let me assure you that it will continue. The continued faith development of our children is something the wardens and indeed all of us hold dear. I do know that as long as whom ever succeeds me in the position has the same unwavering support from parents and parishioners as I did - they and PromiseLand will continue to flourish and grow. I am grateful for everything you have done for me and I honestly do not think there is a better place to be nurtured and formed as a priest. Thank you! Greetings All A NEW YEAR has brought many new challenges, both academically and in parish life. As you may have heard I have received confirmation, from the Archbishop’s office, that I will be ordained to the diaconate on Sunday, May 2nd, at 4:30 p.m. While I am looking forward, I am also very appreciative of where I am right now. Life is both busy, and exciting, but I have not missed the significance of being able to be a part of the life of Christ Church - a very active parish, filled with friendly people, from whom I look forward to learning a great deal. I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for the warm welcome I’ve received, and to say how much I look forward working with and learning from you. Outreach

Facts and Figures Breakfasts are served alternate Saturdays in the Community Hall from 8 - 9.30 a.m.

Community Breakfast THE BREAKFAST PROGRAM began as a response to the priorities members of the congregation identified during the Strategic Planning Days held during 2006 and 2007. At CCDP we already had a proud record of local service through our “Out of the Cold” Program, and we also had an interested core of experienced volunteers at the ready. We now supplement Calvin Presbyterian’s long-running biweekly breakfast program by offering a similar meal on alternate Saturdays. Team leaders from both churches continue to communicate, and although both breakfast operations remain independent, we are proud of our ongoing ecumenical collaboration! The Community Breakfast program at CCDP is now well into its third successful year. Its two principal goals remain unchanged: to provide a biweekly hot breakfast for those in our community who need extra nutrition and to offer an opportunity for those at CCDP (and beyond) who would like to serve in a local ministry. The program benefits a vulnerable population, while allowing volunteers at CCDP to work out of their own church facility. It also addresses a less tangible, but still pressing need in the community - that of loneliness. It’s obvious on Saturday mornings that many of our “regulars” look forward to their time of fellowship in a friendly environment almost as much as they do to their generous portions of delicious scrambled eggs, sausages and toast. For this reason, providing a safe, family-like atmosphere in which to serve breakfast remains a priority. Guests are welcome to come just as they are: no payment is required, no personal questions are asked, nor any means test applied. Over time, this policy of inclusion has helped engender an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect between guests and team members alike, which we as volunteers work hard to sustain, and which the guests obviously appreciate. What’s ahead for 2010? We will serve breakfast ten times between January and the end of June 2010. Beyond that, our ability to continue this valuable program will depend, as always, upon the availability of sufficient financial and volunteer support. We need more of both - more money

We served five times between September and December 2009, for a total of 165 breakfasts to an average of 33 clients per session. On January 16, our first breakfast of 2010, we had 40 guests! As always, very special thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers who make the Community Breakfast program happen: Ann Atkins, John Darby, Ebie Dunbar, Joan Filip, Michael Gendron, Joy Graham, Alastair Grant, Margaret Heather, Nicholas Jackson, Elizabeth Joy, Anne Larkin, Naomi Macdonald, Joyce McIntee, Bettie Martindale, Edna Quammie. An extra- special thank you to the Rev. Greg Carpenter for his help and support. Ross Morrow and Vickie Grant

Churches on-the-Hill Food Bank SOME FACTS from President Paul McGrath’s Report: “...under the auspices of the Daily Food Bank, we operate an ‘Emergency Food Proagram’. This supplies groceries to households who have a place to live but whose income is frequently unsufficient to make ends meet; the result is, all too often, that they go hungry for a short period. This is the need that we attempt to fill. ...we have over 500 households (1 to 8 people) in our active files and see perhaps 300 of them 2 or 3 times each month. ...in 2009, we provided over 14,000 adults and children with groceries sufficient for 3 days; that amounts to food for 126,999 meals! This was up 10% from 2008 and we expect that 2010 will continue to see an increase in demand. ...the Daily Food Bank supplies about 60% of the food we distribute; local food drives, church collection baskets and donations of food from individuals contribute perhaps another 5%; the balance is purchased. In 2009, we spent amost $70,000 on food and supplies for our clients. These funds came from our sponsoring churches, their

Voices for Haiti

WE ARE COMING INTO a new season and with that comes new projects. Our support for agencies such as Citizens for Public Justice and so many others will of course continue, but, it would be great to expand on what we are already doing. I have spoken with our friends from some of the Churches on-the-Hill about pooling our resources on issues or public concerns which may come up and throwing in our support and vice versa to give the issue a louder voice. This could be as simple as posting a petition in each church to be signed by the interested members of the congregation. To expand on this idea, I would more than welcome your involvement. Anyone who is interested in this or any other issues requiring community support, please contact Michael Watson, info available from the parish office 416-920-5211 or email jking@thereslifehere.org

Saturday, February 6th 4:00 pm

The Larkin Singers, in conjunction with Christ Church Deer Park, will be hosting a concert, “Voices for Haiti.” Proceeds from the concert will assist the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund, and their efforts already in place, to help the people of Haiti. This musical event will be general seating. Donations will be accepted at the door. More information can be found on the website www.thereslifehere.org or by contacting the Rev. Greg Carpenter at 416-920-5211 ext 31.

Still Available... Notecards featuring our Benedicite kneelers. On sale in the Holy Grounds Café on the first Sunday of each month through February and March (after the 10:00 am service), or in the office. Two each of three to a package, with envelopes: $9.00 Proceeds to the First Nations Outreach project.

DID YOU KNOW that Ontario is home to 9000 Haitians with 2,150 living in the GTA? Haiti is a country that has strived to overcome punishing debt, military invasion, crushing dictatorships and natural disasters from its beginnings...the recent earthquake is only the latest hurdle to overcome. It will take more than the world’s short term generosity (which is remarkable)...the Haitian people are amazingly resilient but assistance will be needed to rebuild infrastructure, health and education. Remember Haiti as time passes...the needs will remain for years to come.

THE LARKIN SINGERS is a new and dynamic choir in Ontario. Composed of 20 singers from both Toronto and Ottawa, under the direction of Matthew Larkin, they celebrate the rich and varied music of the Anglican tradition. They made their first international tour in July 2009 to Bristol, England, where they acted as choir in residence at the stunning Bristol Cathedral. For more information please speak with Greg Carpenter or email larkinsingers@gmail.com

God So Loved the World: A Concert for Good Friday Friday, April 2 4:00 pm

To make the best use of our time, the two choir practice times listed above will change to a single choir practice on Thursday evenings (start time: 6:30pm) between February and Easter. This will enable the 9:15 and 11am choristers to join together to prepare the music they will sing at our 10am combined Sunday morning services. Planning ahead, the choir has already begun to rehearse music for our Good Friday concert: “God So Loved the World: A Concert for Good Friday”. The concert will have a Celtic flavour and will feature the soloists and choir of Christ Church Deer Park, duo-pianists George Vona and Lark Popov, and special guest, harpist Erica Goodman. More information about this concert will be available in the days to come, so please check the Music page of the CCDP website for updates.

Faith & Film Festival Season 4 Wednesday February 10 - The Soloist (2009) dir. Joe Wright (117 min) Based on a book by journalist Steve Lopez, this film recounts the meeting in Los Angeles of Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.) with a schizophrenic homeless violinist, Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx) who dreams of playing at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. Lopez wants to help the mentally disturbed man, and slowly a friendship grows between them. In the end, Lopez isn’t sure if his caring for Ayers has really helped him, but the musician’s genius has influenced the journalist in a positive way, hence the writing of his book. Wednesday April 21 2010 - The Pool (2007) dir. Chris Smith (98 min) A boy working in a hotel becomes obsessed with a swimming pool within an opulent estate in Panjim, Goa in India. His world changes as he meets the family living in the estate - a successful father and rebellious daughter. Slowly he gains their trust to edge closer to his fascination – but ends up with so much more. This winning film from the Sundance Film Festival will leave you refreshed by the generosity and potential of the human spirit. Films are shown in the Arthur Smith Room. Movie style refreshments (popcorn and cold drinks) are served. Free admission...all are welcome.

A word about change...

Lunchtime Lenten Series

AS WE CONTEMPLATE combining two of our Sunday morning services, many are concerned about the compromises in the liturgy that will likely result should our experimental period become permanent. There are those who are most comfortable with the contemporary service and those who cherish the traditonal liturgy and, for them, change is hard to comprehend.

hosted by The Anglican Church Women

The Liturgy...explained 12:30 - 1:00 pm Arthur Smith Room These ½ hour lunch-time presentations will explore the worship and liturgy of our church...how it evolved...how it enhances our spiritual experience.

The prayer book addressed the issue of liturgical change as far back as 1549(!). This quote can still be found on p. 717 BCP.

Tuesday, March 2

“And whereas in this our time, the minds of men are so diverse, that some think it a great matter of conscience to depart from a piece of the least of their Ceremonies, they be so addicted to their old customs; and again on the other side, some be so newfangled, that they would innovate all things, and so despise the old, that nothing can like them, but that is new: it was thought expedient, not so much to have respect how to please and satisfy either of these parties, as how to please God, and profit them both.”

A Brief History of Liturgy Tuesdays, March 9, 16 and 23 Explanations of portions of the liturgy: creeds, confessions, eucharistic prayers and music Presenters Canon Judy Rois, Rector The Rev Greg Carpenter, Associate Priest The Rev Dr Peter Slater, Honorary Assistant Eric Robertson, Organist & Director of Music Everyone welcome. Come and bring your lunch. Coffee & Tea will be served.

Judging by the response, comments and suggestions of those who attended the information meeting on January 26th, it would appear that this congregation is prepared to try to “please God”.
