EARTH DAY April 22nd

It´s a great time to learn about our planet and how to take care of it. THE FIRST DAY On April 22, 1970, something happened. More than 20 million people took part in the largest demonstration in human history. It was the birth of the modern environmental movement. The event was Earth Day. Since then, each year on April 22, we celebrate Earth Day. It's a day for enjoying nature and getting involved in special environmental events. But, our protection of the Earth shouldn't last just one day. We need to find ways to make every day, Earth Day. THE MAN Gaylord Nelson – he´s called “the father of Earth Day”- was born in Clear Lake, Wisconsin in 1916. As Governor, he helped protect the environment with laws regulating use of detergent products, as well as strict littering and trash disposal laws. THE PROBLEM Global warming, air quality advisory, beach closings... some days the environment doesn't look like it's doing too well.

A

SONG

"I can change the world With my own two hands Make a better place With my own two hands... I can clean up the earth With my own two hands... I'm gonna make it a brighter place I'm gonna make it a safer place I'm gonna help the human race With my own With my own two hands" By Ben Harper

THE SYMBOL The recycling symbol you see today with three arrows in the triangle shape was designed in 1970 in a contest for graphic art students to design a symbol representing paper recycling. The winning entry was submitted by Gary Dean Anderson, a 5-year architecture student. Later that year, William Lloyd, modified the contest winning recycling symbol to create the present-day image.

What can I do for Earth?

What can a single person do for Earth? USE LESS WATER. Take showers instead of baths, turn off the tap when brushing your teeth. COMMUTE WITHOUT POLLUTING. Use public transportation whenever possible to reduce air pollution. SAVE ELCTRICITY. Turn stuff off when you´re done. REUSE, REDUCE, RECYCLE. Try to find products with less packaging, take reusable bags on shopping trips. E-CYCLE. Take your old computer, DVD player, or other electronics to a recycling centre. Can you think of more things that you can do to help the Earth and make Earth Day, every day?
