Hey, Capital District! Hey, Capital District!

We’re almost to Spring Break - and DCON is just weeks away! I’m so excited to come meet all of you in person this year. Here’s a few important updates at the international level!

First off, don’t forget about our two newest partners, Schoolhouse.world and Collegewise! For Schoolhouse, we ’ re planning to have a Tutor-a-thon competition this April, so get ready to join in as a volunteer tutor, helping students receive quality education around the world! Additionally, Collegewise is offering a unique discount on their Common App Bootcamps for Key Club members - check it out on keyclub.org/collegewise.

Our Start Strong: Zambia partnership is still going strong - we raised over $80,000 during Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF 2022, which is amazing! Let’s continue to advocate for early childhood development by supporting this campaign through club and district initiatives.

The Global Leadership Certificate’s last set of courses is being released very soon, with courses taught by Sal Khan this time! Make sure to check out these courses to strengthen your leadership soft skills and earn your certificate for future endeavors.

Lastly, I want to invite all of you to the International Convention in Anaheim, CA this year! These Key Clubbers got the opportunity to serve and cook the food at Kiwanis Pancake Day. They ended up raising several thousands in donations and helped feed hundreds of people in their community. Their work during Pancake Day earns them a nomination for the "most service hours" superlative!

Chesapeake High School Key Clubbers from Division 4A collaborated with the Kiwanis Next Gen E-Club to take part in their Free Rice Challenge, and the outcomes were incredible. 22. . MOST LIKELY TO PARTNER WITH THE K-FAMILY**

When it comes to parterning with their local Kiwanis family counterparts, Parkersburg High School from Division 18 knows exactly what to do! They have been particularly active by partnering with their local K-Kids club to conduct various projects. PHS Key Club members volunteered to judge their local elementary school's science and social study fairs, encouraging education and social studies/STEM engagement among elementary schoolers!

Keyser High School from Division 19 has also found ways to connect with their local K-Kids! During the holiday season, Keyser Key Clubbers helped out with a Secret Santa's Shop where they helped young students choose gifts for their families and help wrap them. Altogether, students volunteered 250 hours and helped brighten the holiday season for children and their families!

**Reminder: this year ' s governor ' s project is Capital with K-Family! Any club who has partnered with a Kiwanis Family counterpart should fill out the Governor's Project Participation form for recognition!

22

33. . MOST IMPROVED

James Monroe High School from Division 2F has improved significantly in returning from the pandemic! One particular service project that demonstrated their growth was their Fall river clean-up, where they also partnered with their local Kiwanis Club. Members spend the day picking up waste by the Rappahannock in Virginia - wonderful job, James Monroe Key Club!

Back in December, South County High School

purchased materials to host a sandwich-making project to donate them to their local homeless shelter. Various ham, peanut butter, and turkey sandwiches were assembled to create a total of 400 sandwiches2A LTG Dila Arat called it their "biggest event of the year!" This project is a true display of the improvement and dedication South County Key Club has experienced this year.

William Penn High School from Division 6A spread holiday joy by collecting donated toys from their school for their annual Toy Drive. After collection, they wrapped each toy and donated them to homeless shelters and children's hospitals!

23

44. . MISCELLANEOUS

Millbrook High School from Division 8A has been recognized as the "most likely to bring in future members!" Throughout the service term, they have provided Key Clubbers the opportunity to help out an assigned teacher/classroom at their local elementary school. Millbrook has helped their local school manage the teacher shortage, monitior student safety, and it has gauged interest in Key Club among younger students!

Albert Einstein Key Club from Division 3B has earned the "most creative" superlative award for getting crafty this winter and completing a scarf-making project back in January! Key Clubbers learned how to cut, sew, and design scarves throughout the month and were able to donate their creations to a local homeless shelter.

24

55. . MOST ENTH

On February 15th, a Division 2A club partnered with Best Buddies to host a Valentine’s Day Dance during advisory in the Bubble. The purpose of this event was to bring awareness to students with disabilities at South County as they can’t usually attend other events like homecoming or prom. We had activities like bingo, drawing, ring toss, and a photo booth with proms. There was also lots of dancing going on featuring the Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha Slide, and the Wobble! Overall, it was a very fun event with a great turnout and lots of laughter.

On February 14th, 2023, Dulaney Key Club from Division 6B hosted the "Warm Up America Knitting for Charity" service event within the school itself. All attending volunteers knit / crochet - even teaching those that don't know how - to donate towards the organization Warm Up America. This foundation makes blankets & hats for homeless people or those that are simply in need. During this specific service event, volunteers would make small squares until enough was made to make an entire blanket.

This is in collaboration with our international partner UNICEF, an agency under the United Nations that aims to help children by providing various forms of aid across the globe. Their mission to help children align's with Key Club's major emphasis on children and the youth. If your club has not already, it's never too late to get involved! Check out some service ideas below.

Sell candy grams to students at your school

Set up a penny jar in various classrooms, school events, or outside of businesses with permission to see how many coins your club can collect for donations!

Collaborate with a local business and ask that a portion of funds go towards Start Strong: Zambia when students mention your club/school!

Host a used book sale at your school or a local library and arrange it so that proceeds go towards the district/international project!

GOVERNOR'S PROJECT - CAPITAL WITH K-FAMILY GOVERNOR'S PROJECT - CAPITAL WITH K-FAMILY

Governor Izza set forth an incredible district project for the year that encouraged clubs across the Capital District to partner with their local Kiwanis family clubs in an effort to strengthen Capital District Key Club's relationship with our Kiwanis Family counterparts! The project has so far been an outstanding success and many clubs around Capital have engaged with Kiwanis family counterparts throughout the year. YOU ASK.... YOU ASK....

In our final Q&A section of the term, I would like to g this year. You all are rockstars and I am so grateful f and absolutely wond

Q: What is a Key Club service partner?

-First Colonial HS Key Clubber

A: Key Club partners can exist at the international, district, division, and community levels and exist to strengthen and help further the goals of Key Club International as a whole! On the international level, we have various categories of service partners, which include Membership Benefit, Preferred Charities, Vision Partners, and Service Partners. Check out the final two pages of this publication to check out which international partners fall under each organization!

In fact, there have been some developments this past year with Key Club's international partners, and two of our newest partners are Schoolhouse and Collegewise. Schoolhouse is a service partner that Key Clubbers can sign up with to tutor - founded by the one and only Sal Khan himself - and it's even recognized by various competitive colleges.

Collegewise is a member benefit partner - they have special offers for Key Clubbers on college advising, tutoring, and more. Click here to learn more!

WE ANSWER WE ANSWER !!

give a HUGE thank you to everyone who participated or your contributions. Read below for two of our final, derful, Q&A questions!

Q: I've heard about some contests but I want to know more about them. What are they about, and how can I enter them?

A: Capital District Convention is the best place to go if you ' re looking for contests to take part in! At District Convention, there are three main contests individuals can enroll in: the Oratory Contest, the Essay Contest, and the Talent Show that is put on during the Governor's Farewell Session on Saturday night

Registration for all three contests will be open Friday night of the convention. The Oratory Contest allows Key Clubbers to practice their speaking skills and can be prepared in advance! In fact, this year ' s prompt is about how you have worked to uphold the Key Club pledge. For the Essay Contests, participants will be unaware of the prompt until it's time to write their essay, and for the talent contest, participants can register for an audition time slot on Friday evening to determine whether they will perform for the convention as a whole.

Various club contests are also due on Friday evening! These contests are the Annual Achievement, Single Service, Major Emphasis, Promotional Video, Poster (digital and non-digital), and Year in Review Scrapbook (Traditional and Non-Traditional, or digital).
