Shining Stars From The Executive Corner by DONALD VALPREDO All of us here in California’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry are excited and elated over the prospect of the three-year-old California-bred colt California Chrome. What runs deeper, though, are the connections of this fine racehorse. The owners, the Coburns and the Martins who race under DAP Racing, have hit lightning in a bottle, but the real rewards and what shines through is their belief in what they are doing and how they go about their business. The owner of California Chrome’s sire Lucky Pulpit is another tribute to the Golden State. Larry Williams started out in the lumber and cattle businesses and has parlayed those into a successful Thoroughbred operation. He had enough confidence in our local breeding program to retire this stallion to California where the Horse Division team at Harris Farms in Coalinga has since established him as one of California’s leading sires. California Chrome’s jockey Victor Espinoza has been a leading rider in the Golden State for more than 20 years, and had success in Kentucky Derby with a victory on War Emblem in 2002. Through hard work, he has earned a fine

reputation with leading trainers and seems to be a comfortable fit for this magnificent animal. Art Sherman, California Chrome’s trainer, has been a friend and colleague of mine for way too many years. We go back to socializing days with Frank Costa and Jerry Lambert and our many friends included Dean Hall and Dale Long. Art is the classic California horseman, always attentive to his work, accepting the highs with the lows, but a believer in knowing he is doing it right. The real reason for the success of California Chrome is the perseverance of all his connections by believing in the California program and utilizing the lucrative Golden State Series races for foundation and experience. With a dedicated work ethic, they now get to reap the rewards of those efforts. All of us in California have a new enthusiasm, hoping we can do the same, and want to compliment and thank everyone connected with “Team Chrome” for the positive notoriety they have given our state. We wish you all the best and continued success, especially in the Kentucky Derby (grade I) at Churchill Downs in Louisville on May 3.

The Thrill Of A Lifetime Over the years, especially during the last two decades, horse racing has given me many great moments at the track, but it could be the California-bred colt California Chrome who gives me the thrill of my lifetime when, God willing, he is able to win this year’s Kentucky Derby (grade I). I will be at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, to witness the 140th running of this great event and my anticipation surrounding this race’s current favorite brings back memories of a few other wonderful times that I’ve had the pleasure of spending in the company of some very special Thoroughbreds. In September of 1993, I witnessed my racing silks at the racetrack for the first time when Centauri won in her first start for me and my partners at Greyville Racecourse in Durban, South Africa, and I attended my first-ever Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park in November of 1997, while I was also honored to see Barbaro win the 2006 Kentucky Derby. Then it is a couple of Breeders’ Cup Classic (grade I) wins that come to mind: a second consecutive triumph in this signature event of the World Championships for Thoroughbreds by Cal-bred Tiznow at Belmont Park in New York in October of 2001, and the “un-be-lieve-a-ble” win by the incomparable Zenyatta at my home track of Santa Anita Park in November of 2009. So I just can’t wait for May 3. In this May 2014 issue of our monthly California Thoroughbred magazine, we feature California Chrome’s impressive victory in the grade I, $1,000,750 Santa Anita Derby (grade I), along with editorials on Big Macher and Tribal Spy who were the other Cal-bred graded stakes winners at this Arcadia track during April. Also included in this publication are: an In Memoriam tribute to Cal-bred Bertrando, a legend both at the races and at stud; advertorials on some of the 2014 foals at Madera Thoroughbreds and Paradise Road Ranch; a story on Cal-bred Wishing Well, the graded stakes-winning dam of 1989 Kentucky Derby winner Sunday Silence; and an article titled, “Have You Ever Won A Kentucky Derby?” The latest CTBA Member Profile spotlights Dennis “DJ” Johnston, the breeder of 2013 and 2014 stakes winner L. In the Media Poll for Santa Anita Park’s 2013/2014 Winter-Spring meet that concluded on April 20, this year’s Santa Anita Derby (grade I) winner California Chrome was voted both the Horse of the Meet and outstanding three-year-old, while fellow California-bred Big Macher, who won the Potrero Grande Stakes (grade II), was honored as the top sprinter. On April 22, Fairplex Park in Pomona announced its intention through a press release from the Thoroughbred Owners of California (TOC) to transfer its Thoroughbred dates for the 2014 Los Angeles County Fair meeting to Los Alamitos Race Course in Orange County. To make this change official, this action would need to be approved by the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) at one of its monthly meetings.

Vessels Stallion Farm For Sale The 1,390-acre Vessels Ranch property in Bonsall, including Vessels Stallion Farm LLC’s 275 acres, has been listed for sale with Sotheby’s International Realty in association with Equestrian Real Estate. It was determined that it is in the best interests of its owners, a trust for the benefit of Frank “Scoop” Vessels’ sons Kash and Colt, to seek to realize the value of this property now rather than continuing to hold it for investment. However, this does not mean the closure of Vessels Stallion Farm. Presently home to more than 260 Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, it will remain open throughout the sale process, which is likely to take an exatended period of time and will have to allow several additional months for a winding down of its use of the equine facilities and relocation of its horses and those of its clients.

Jockey Club Releases Equine Injury Statistics

“Behind the Gate,” a film that examines the horse racing industry by taking a look at the power and brevity behind the racehorse, has not only gained the sponsorship of Santa Anita Park in advance of its worldwide May 15 release date on www.Yekra.com, but it has also received a Wrangler Award for the Outstanding Documentary in Film and Television at the National Cowboy Museum’s 53rd Anniversary Heritage Awards in Oklahoma City on April 12. California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) members Mark and Daryle Ann Lindley Giardino produced the movie, while the former directed it with Jack Lucarelli and Joe Pesci did the narration. On March 31, The Jockey Club released fatality statistics collected from the Equine Injury Database for the fiveyear period of Jan. 1, 2009 through Dec. 31, 2013. The prevalence of race-related fatal injury for that timeframe was 1.91 per 1,000 starts, based on the analysis of 1,871,522 starts. Synthetic racing surfaces yielded significantly fewer fatal injuries than dirt and turf surfaces, with 1.22 such incidents per 1,000 starts, compared to 2.08 for dirt and 1.63 for turf. The fatality rates were highest for horses aged four years old and upward, and for races carded at less than six furlongs.

Benchmark Pensioned On April 21, Ballena Vista Farm announced the retirement from its breeding shed of Benchmark, the 23-year-old son of Alydar and dual grade I winner Tranquility Lake whose progeny earnings stand at more than $30 million. Among his more than 40 stakes winners, including at least two in each of his 12 crops to race, are the grade I winners Points Offthebench, the 2013 Eclipse Champion Male Sprinter and California Horse of the Year, Brother Derek, the 2006 Santa Anita Derby winner, Idiot Proof, now a sire in the Golden State, and Silent Sighs, winner of the 2004 Santa Anita Oaks.

Auction Action The California-bred broodmare Theresa’s Tizzy, a grade III winner by Cee’s Tizzy, was flattered during the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Texas Two-YearOlds in Training & Horses of Racing Age Sale on April 1, when her juvenile filly by Pomeroy elicited a winning bid of $100,000 from buyer Charles Castille Jr., marking the third-highest price of the one-day auction. Theresa’s Tizzy is the dam of the 2006 grade III winner Got the Last Laugh and the 2013 stakes winner Puddifoot. During the Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale in Newmarket, England, on April 17, a juvenile colt by Henrythenavigator out of the 10-year-old Johannesburg mare La Traviata, a 2007 graded stakes winner foaled in California, was sold to PFI Cole for 90,000 Guineas ($158,760). La Traviata’s first foal is the 2011 two-year-old group I-winning colt Crusade.

Kay Bender Kay Bender, a member of the Board of Directors of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) during the 1990s and owner of the Kay Bender Thoroughbreds sales agency, died in April.

Lathrop Hoffman Longtime CTBA member Lathrop Hoffman, a prominent businessman and civic leader in the Los Angeles area, died on April 2 at the age of 89. The founder and chairman of the expansive Sierra Autocars dealership group was a World War II veteran, former president of the Monrovia Chamber of Commerce and one-time owner of the former Fairway Farm in Anza. Among the prominent California-bred racehorses bred by Hoffman were the grade II winner Trailthefox, the eighttime stakes winner Hayley’s Halo and Miss Adela, the latter a group I winner in Mexico.

Phyllis Lambert Former CTBA member Phyllis Lambert, 67, died in Chino on March 27. A fixture at California Thoroughbred sales since the late 1960s, Lambert managed several large farm dispersals. She also established Notjustanother Horse Farm, where she specialized in lay-ups and sales preparation.

10 Years Ago On May 31, 2004, the California-bred gelding Yougottawanna posted his first of two consecutive wins in the grade III, $86,250 Seabiscuit Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Bay Meadows Racecourse. Also a graded stakes winner at three in 2002, the chestnut son of Candi’s Gold and five-time winner Chapel’s Sister, by Midway Circle, was bred by Halo Farms and raced until April of his eightyear-old year before retiring with a record of 44-12-8-9 and $729,127 in earnings. 25 Years Ago Sensational Star, a five-year-old by Inherent Star out of Election Day’s Forty Percent, won the grade III, $83,450 Triple Bend Handicap at Hollywood Park on May 6, 1989. Bred in California by Lila Lomax, the chestnut gelding became a dual graded stakes winner the following year, after which he retired with a bankroll of $442,455 from 13 wins and 11 seconds in 39 starts.

Sensational Star Grade III Triple Bend Handicap

The winner of the $34,200 Will Rogers Stakes for three-year-olds at Hollywood Park on May 30, 1964, was the California-bred colt Count Charles. The bay son of Nashville and the winning Pavot mare Lovely Wac was bred by Mrs. N. J. Curry and completed his career as a seven-year-old having earned $92,004 from a 64-6-16-9 record.

Assemblyman Jones, and his group, emerged quite educated after asking many questions while thoroughly enjoying their day learning about the Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry.

California Chrome: Derby Bound

The Grade California-Breds

by RUDI GROOTHEDDE On April 5, a day that saw 35,241 horse racing fans visit Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, the 77th running of the grade I, $1,000,750 Santa Anita Derby did not disappoint them when this program’s signature event provided a great moment to remember. In the 1 1/8-mile test on the main dirt track, California-bred California Chrome dominated seven Kentuckybred opponents, including runner-up Hoppertunity, by 5 1/4 lengths and more to confirm himself as the current favorite for the grade I, $2 million Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 3. Bred by his owners Martin Perry and Steve Coburn, the flashy chestnut stalked the pacesetting longshot Dublin Up before taking command on the far turn and posting a winning time of 1:47.52 that was just a couple of ticks off the stakes record, while being hard held at the wire by jockey Victor Espinoza as the 3-5 favorite. Trained by 77-year-old Art Sherman, California Chrome’s record stands at six wins, a second and $1,134,850 in earnings after this latest $600,000 payday and he remains unbeaten this year with additional wins in Santa Anita’s March 8 San Felipe Stakes (grade II) worth $300,500 and $250,750 California Cup Derby on Jan. 25. By Lucky Pulpit, a 13-year-old son of Pulpit who has been the Golden State’s leading sire of his generation since his first crop hit the races in 2010, California Chrome is the first foal out of the eight-year-old Not For Love mare Love the Chase. After breaking her maiden at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 7, 2009, for a partnership that included the Blinkers On Racing Stable that Martin and Coburn were a part of, this chestnut was then purchased by that duo for the $8,000 claiming price that she had just raced for. Since foaling California Chrome on Feb. 18, 2011, Love

the Chase has produced two more full sisters to him in 2013 and 2014, while she is now back in foal to Lucky Pulpit, a grade II-placed stakes winner of $209,928 from the family of such prominent national sires as Unbridled’s Song and Seattle Song who has stood his entire stud career at Harris Farms in Coalinga. Rousing Sermon, the 2011 California Champion TwoYear-Old Male, is also by Lucky Pulpit, while California Chrome was the runner-up last year to the Golden State’s male juvenile champion, grade I winner Tamarando. At two, California Chrome’s seven trips to post included victories in the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s $100,250 Graduation Stakes and the $200,500 King Glorious Stakes, the final stakes race ever run at Hollywood Park. With his last four races producing wins by a combined 24 1/4 lengths under Espinoza, who won the 2002 Kentucky Derby on War Emblem, California Chrome certainly has the race record to become only the fourth Cal-bred to win the “Run for the Roses” on the first Saturday in May. He also has the female family to follow in the hoofprints of Morvich in 1922, Swaps in 1955, and Decidedly in 1962. Not only was his seventh dam Judy-Rae a half-sister to Del Mar stakes winner Iron Maiden, both the dam of 1957 Kentucky Derby winner Iron Liege and grand dam of Swaps, but his ninth dam Uncle’s Lassie produced the 1959 victor, Man o’ War’s Clyde Van Dusen. “He’s my Swaps, let’s put it that way,” said Sherman who as an exercise rider accompanied that great Cal-bred to Louisville nearly 60 years ago. “If all goes well, we’ll ship to Kentucky probably a week before the Derby.” In his quest for history, California Chrome is now scheduled to work out at his Los Alamitos Race Course base on April 20 and 27, and then it will be on to Kentucky.

Big Macher: Onward And Upward

The Grade California-Breds

by GENE WILLIAMS Big Macher has quickly become a big deal among California-breds since the beginning of the year, by first winning January’s $126,000 California Cup Sprint Stakes and then taking April’s grade II, $200,750 Potrero Grande Stakes, both at Santa Anita Park. In between, the four-year-old gelded son of Ballena Vista Farm’s pensioned stallion Beau Genius was a very close second in March’s $251,250 San Carlos Stakes, another grade II event in open company. Those three efforts won him recognition in a media poll as the top sprinter in the track’s winter-spring meeting. The Potrero Grande win on Apr. 12, gave him a career record of four victories, two seconds and two thirds in 10 starts and two stakes wins and a second in three outings this year. In five dirt sprints, he’s posted three wins and two seconds and all of his trips to post have been at sprint distances. And trainer Richard Baltas, a veteran of the Southern California turf wars, isn’t expected to change that. There appears to be little need to mess with near-perfection for the big bay owned by Tom Mansor of San Diego and Brendan Bakir of Malibu, who races as Tachycardia Stables. Big Macher, loosely translated from Yiddish as “big shot,” is the first stakes winner for his dam Insight, a 14-year-old daughter of Kris S. But his Potrero Grande effort surprised neither trainer Richard Baltas nor jockey Tyler Baze. “He’s a horse that is getting better and better,” Baltas said after the race. “I don’t even know how to explain it. He’s the type of horse who has the will to win. I don’t take any credit for it.” Whatever’s happening with the horse, Baltas is willing to go with the flow. As for the winning Baze, the veteran rider said, “I had a

beautiful trip. I got to do what I wanted out there and I got to keep him happy. I knew this horse was going to lay his body down and give me everything he had. I just rode this horse with confidence and knew he was going to give me 100 percent.” Big Macher was bred by Ballena Vista Farm and was claimed by Baltas out of the gelding’s first race last summer at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. Baltas said both he and the owners were impressed with the horse’s pedigree and his looks. He was claimed for $20,000 and has so far put $316,178 in his new owners’ coffers. He had sold to trainer Peter Miller and Doubledown Stables Inc. for $10,000 at the 2011 Barretts October Yearling Sale As for what’s next, Baltas said he hadn’t made a plan yet, but expects Big Macher to continue sprinting, something that seems to be dictated by his pedigree. His unraced dam Insight’s produce all lean in that direction. So, Baltas said, Del Mar’s Bing Crosby and Pat O’Brien Stakes at six and seven furlongs, respectively, are the most likely next steps for the speedy gelding. Big Macher was something of a big pain during his early training with Baltas, exhibiting major problems in the gate. But consistent gate training turned him into an ideal pupil and the gate troubles are now a thing of the past, Baltas says. As a result, says the trainer, Big Macher has become a big joy to train. “Now that the gate problems are out of the way, he’s turned out to be really an easy horse to train.” So Baltas and his owners have the best of both worlds: a winning horse and one whose temperament translates well to training. So it’s onward and upward, they hope, with Big Macher. Baltas now is hoping that what’s gone on with the big gelding will inspire the rest of his 30-strong stable.

Tribal Spy: Another One To Watch

The Grade California-Breds

by EMILY SHIELDS Cambiocorsa, Unzip Me, and now Tribal Spy. The four-year-old chestnut is the latest in a parade of California-bred fillies who call Santa Anita Park’s unique hillside turf course home. She has won three of four starts down the hill since December, and notched her first graded score there with a win in the grade III, $100,500 Las Cienegas Stakes on April 12. After several unsuccessful starts on the dirt and then breaking her maiden by five lengths on Hollywood Park’s allweather Cushion Track surface last June, Tribal Spy made the switch to turf in time for the $82,670 Unzip Me Stakes in September of 2013. She finished second in that race—her hillside debut—at boggling odds of 51-1. After a disappointing seventh-placed finish after a wide trip in October, she won an open company allowance event on Dec. 29. That victory propelled her to a third-placed effort in the $126,500 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint Stakes on Jan. 25, to kick off the new season. Tribal Spy, under Irving Orozco, only missed by half a length for the victory. She then won her first stakes race in the $100,500 Irish O’Brien Stakes on March15, leading throughout to score by a length. Despite that effort and her fantastic record on the course, she was sent off as the 11-1 longshot in a field of seven in the graded Las Cienegas. Under jockey Joe Talamo, Tribal Spy settled back third behind the dueling duo of Sky High Gal and 7-5 favorite Biorhythm before swinging wide around them in the stretch and getting up to lead deep in the stretch. She scored by a head over the rallying Llandudno, stopping the clock in 1:12.12 for

the about 6 1/2-furlong distance. Sky High Gal finished third, while Biorhythm faded to fourth. Adam Kitchingman trains the daughter of Ballena Vista Farm’s Tribal Rule for H. Paul Boghossian and his sons, Paul and Chris Boghossian, who race as Triple B Farms. They led the partnership that purchased the two-time Pacific Classic (grade I) winner Richard’s Kid in 2012, and now stand that new stallion at Magali Farms in Santa Ynez. Richard’s Kid earned $2,482,259 over seven racing seasons with 12 wins in 47 starts. The nine-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid is standing his first season for $4,500. The Boghossians will now decide between retiring Tribal Spy to breed her to Richard’s Kid or keeping her in training. Kitchingman indicated that the $75,000 Mizdirection Stakes, to be run down the hill on May 25, was a logical target for Tribal Spy. With earnings of $298,610, Tribal Spy now boasts a record of six wins, three seconds and a third in 15 starts. She was bred by Gary Barber and is the only foal out of the four-time winner Victory Spy, a daughter of Victory Gallop and the winning Clever Trick mare Clever Frosty, a half-sister to the graded stakes winner Digstal Dan. While Tribal Spy has a ways to go before reaching the level of Cambiocorsa or Unzip Me, both of whom scored seven times down the hill, she is headed in that direction. All three of these fillies won the Las Cienegas, which was enjoying its 40th running and has been won by Cal-bred runners on 11 occasions. The first was Woodland Pines, who took the inaugural edition of the race in 1974.

Wishing Well: A Worldwide Impact

by EMILY SHIELDS In recent years, there have been a number of Californiabred mares who have produced outstanding Kentucky-bred runners. The Cee’s Tizzy mare Tizso foaled the 2012 grade Iwinning millionaire Paynter, while the Moscow Ballet mare Golden Ballet produced 2011Breeders’ Cup Classic and 2010 Belmont Stakes hero Drosselmeyer, in addition to being a grade I winner herself. Perhaps the most famous Cal-bred mare to produce a superstar was Wishing Well. The daughter of Understanding not only had a career in which she won multiple graded stakes events, but she went on to be the dam of the Hall of Famer, Sunday Silence, who at one time was possibly the best stallion in the world. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the year Sunday Silence won the Kentucky Derby (grade I) and was named Eclipse Horse of the Year. Wishing Well was foaled in 1975, and was already both a former claimer and a multiple stakes winner when she won the May 1980 Gamely Handicap (grade II) in front of a record Hollywood Park crowd of 80,348. During that same meet, she also won the grade III Wilshire Handicap and finished second in the Beverly Hill Handicap (grade III), both during June. She was named California’s Champion Older Female that year. Wishing Well proved difficult to breed, and she had three unsuccessful seasons before she produced a dark bay son of Halo in 1986. When he was an unraced juvenile, Wishing Well went through the ring at the 1988 California Thoroughbred Sales (CTS) Winter Mixed Sale, topping the auction with a bid of $135,000 from Thoroughbred Associates. That son of Halo went on to be Sunday Silence. After breaking his maiden at two in 1988, Sunday Silence steamrolled through 1989 with wins in the grade II San Felipe Handicap and grade I Santa Anita Derby. He

then reeled off victories over East Coast darling Easy Goer in both the grade I Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The latter race produced one of the greatest duels of all time, as Sunday Silence scored by a nose after a tremendous stretch drive. Although Easy Goer swept the Belmont Stakes to deny Sunday Silence the Triple Crown, he returned with wins in the grade I Super Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic, in which he defeated Easy Goer a final time to earn Horse of the Year honors. At four, Sunday Silence won the grade I Californian Stakes before injury forced his retirement with nine wins and five seconds in 14 starts for earnings of $4,968,554. American breeders weren’t interested in the horse as a stallion, so he was sold to Japan’s Shadai Farm. There, Sunday Silence quickly became one of the greatest sires of all time, leading the country’s sire list a record 13 times. He sired 25 champions among his earners of more than $730 million who also won group I races in Hong Kong and Dubai. His standouts include unbeaten 2005 Triple Crown winner and 2012/2013 leading sire Deep Impact (Jpn), as well as dual group II winner Stay Gold (Jpn), who went on to sire 2011 Triple Crown winner Orfevre (Jpn). Heart’s Cry (Jpn) is the sire of Just a Way (Jpn), recent winner of the Dubai Duty Free (group I), while Deep Impact sired two-time Japan Cup (group I) heroine and Dubai Sheema Classic (group I) winner Gentildonna (Jpn). Wishing Well produced only four runners from six foals, but all of them were winners. She is remembered not only by races that were named in her honor at both Santa Anita and the now defunct Hollywood Park, but also by the hundreds of horses racing around the world carrying Sunday Silence in their bloodlines.

At the 2006 October Barretts Mixed Sale, Johnston went to $8,500 to acquire the Avenue of Flags mare Storybook Fair. The multiple stakes-placed 12-year-old had already produced dual stakes winner Shining Nuggets, a 1998 colt by Half Term who took the $109,100 I’m Smokin Stakes at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in 2000. Storybook Fair was in foal to Marino Marini, and dropped that colt in March of 2007. “She had the baby, and we brought the horse to the (2008) Barretts January Mixed Sale,” Johnston recalled. “They told me he might bring $15,000.” The bidding continued to climb well past that figure, ultimately reaching $70,000. “I’ve had a lot of fun, but I’ve also poured a lot of money in,” Johnston said. “My heart was pounding during the sale. I couldn’t believe it.” The colt, named Bold and Brave, won his only career start by 2 1/2 effortless lengths in March of 2011. Johnston bred Storybook Fair back to Tribal Rule for the 2008 foaling season. Although he sold the resulting foal, L.A. Weekend, he has followed the horse’s career quite closely. California-bred L.A. Weekend won his debut against maiden special weight company at Hollywood Park on May 21, 2011, winning by 1 3/4 lengths at odds of 25-1. He then won four allowance events in both California and New Mexico over the next 20 months, before scoring a length win in the $75,000 Phoenix Gold Cup Handicap at Turf Paradise in Arizona on Feb. 16, 2013. From there, L.A. Weekend took the $35,000 Coyote Handicap by 6 1/4 lengths, a title which he successfully

defended on Mar. 29 of this year. He also has victories in the 2013 Caballos Del Sol Stakes and 2014 Swift Stakes, boosting his record to 11 wins in 22 starts for earnings of $340,523. “When he was in California, I was getting those good breeder awards for him,” Johnston said. “It felt almost like I still owned him.” L.A. Weekend worked a bullet halfmile on April 15 in preparation for his next start. Johnston has made an impression off the track as well. After his wife died, he attended a singles’ dance in Chico where he met his current wife Dottie. “I waited about an hour just to talk to her,” he recalled. “I married her six months after we danced, and we’ve been together 17 years.” The Johnstons have been going to the Humboldt County Fair at Ferndale for 18 consecutive years, and when there was consideration towards closing it, Johnston spoke passionately about keeping it operating. Locals thanked him profusely for his support, and the decision was later made to continue the short meet. Red Bluff resident Johnston affably calls himself “Mr. Nobody,” but remains in the game. Although he only owns two horses now—a far cry from when he had 16—he eagerly awaits their return to the track later this summer. Dot’s Onthewarpath, a winning homebred daughter of Chatahoochee War named after Dottie, and the recently claimed Magico are both preparing for the 2014 fair circuit. While Johnston has never started a horse at the Humboldt County Fair, he already has reservations to return this season. Perhaps this is the year he will see a runner carry his colors there.

by LISA GROOTHEDDE Owners and trainers seeking to infuse their racing barns with untapped juvenile talent will have their second and final opportunity of the year on Monday, May 12, when Barretts Sales & Racing hosts the 2014 Barretts May Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training in Pomona. A single session, featuring 127 cataloged juveniles, will get underway in the Hinds Pavilion at 2 p.m. Among the graded stakes performers emerging from this auction since its most recent edition was conducted in 2013 are the $1,525,364-earner Jeranimo, who became a dual grade I winner with his victory in Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s Eddie Read Stakes last July, 2014 Santa Ana Stakes (grade II) winner Stormy Lucy, 2013 La Jolla Handicap (grade II) winner Dice Flavor and 2013 Miesque Stakes (grade III) heroine Full Ransom. Prominent North American sires represented in the 2014 catalog include Artie Schiller, Awesome Again, Candy Ride (Arg), More Than Ready, Old Fashioned, Pioneerof the Nile, Scat Daddy, Tapit, Tiznow, Tiz Wonderful, War Front, Wildcat Heir and the deceased Harlan’s Holiday and Rockport Harbor. Also available are offspring from the respective first crops of the grade I winners Discreetly Mine, Majesticperfection, Midshipman, Summer Bird, Super Saver, Tale of Ekati and Warrior’s Reward. During the auction’s 2013 edition, 88 of the 109 juveniles offered were reported as sold for gross receipts of $4,869,200, yielding an average price of $55,332 and a $30,000 median. Fifteen youngsters commanded six-figure purchase prices last year, led by an Into Mischief colt who was acquired by Racing Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert for a sale-topping bid of $320,000. Subsequently named Can the Man, the colt won Santa Anita Park’s $100,000 Speakeasy Stakes and ran third in Del Mar’s $301,500 Del Mar Futurity (grade I) within five months of his purchase. California-breds constitute more than half of the 2014 catalog, with 65 entries. During the 2013 auction, 24 statebred juveniles sold for a collective $1,012,000, yielding a $42,167 average. There will be 27 consignments housed at the Barretts sales grounds this year, under the management of 15 consignors. Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, the leading consignor from the 2013 Barretts May Sale, will be represented this

The Streak Continues On the same program that fellow Cal-bred California Chrome emphatically won the Santa Anita Derby (grade I) for a fourth victory in a row, Alert Bay improved his own win streak to three with a half-length score over 2013 stakes winner Life Is a Joy at the generous odds of 9-1 in the $200,000 Echo Eddie Stakes for runners bred or sired in the Golden State on April 5. Ridden by Tyler Baze, the dark bay gelding gave trainer Blaine Wright his first stakes win at Santa Anita when rallying from fifth in the field of eight Cal-breds to post a final time of 1:15.61 for 6 1/2 furlongs on the main dirt track. In his two previous starts, Alert Bay had won at a mile in both a grassy maiden special weight event at the same Arcadia track on Feb. 2, and then in allowance optional claiming company at Golden Gate Fields on the all-weather Tapeta surface. Alert Bay’s record for owner Peter Redekop B. C. Ltd. stands at 6-3-3-0 and $187,800 in earnings and this son

of City Zip and Dushyantor’s Hickory (Chi), a group Iplaced dual stakes winner in her native land of Chile, was bred by Thomas Newton Bell and Ross John McLeod and sold for $65,000 to ARB Agent as a yearling at Keeneland’s 2012 January Horses of All Ages Sale. A Valuable Victory Less than three quarters of an hour later, the $200,250 Evening Jewel Stakes also enjoyed its third running when the 7-5 favorite Rovenna, a daughter of Old English Rancho’s Vronsky and the winning Northern Afleet mare Amadamprez, raced to a 2 3/4-length triumph over Harlington’s Rose in 1:15.55. Against seven Cal-breds and a Kentucky-bred, the Mike Machowsky trainee dueled outside of one rival before taking control of the race on the far turn under jockey Victor Espinoza. Rovenna’s prior record included a maiden special weight win on her July 19 debut going 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt at Calder Racecourse in Florida, three stakes placings on the dirt and turf at Santa Anita going a mile and at seven furlongs on the all-weather Cushion Track surface at Hollywood Park, and an allowance optional claiming victory in her most recent start in Arcadia at 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track.

The bay filly has earned $257,760 from three wins, a second and three thirds in eight trips to post for her breeder and owner Donald Dizney, while Machowsky stated, “We have a ton of options for her. We are definitely looking at Cal-bred options but if there is a nice spot for a graded race we’d like to try that.” Growing In Strength One day prior to graded stakes wins by the Cal-bred duo of Tribal Spy and Big Macher, 42-1 longshot Uzziel defeated six Kentucky-breds and two Virginia-breds in the $78,700 Santa Paula Stakes on Apr. 11, when she won gate-to-wire by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:17.19 for 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt with Tyler Baze in the irons. Trained by Mike Puype, the dark bay filly was bred by her owners James and Tammy Mckenney and is the seventh foal out of the 15-year-old Lord at War (Arg) mare Pretti Woman whose previous offspring have earned more than $400,000 while winning at least four races each. After Uzziel’s first two career starts produced a third-placed finish and then a win in maiden special weight company on Nov. 23, she sandwiched another victory at six furlongs on Golden Gate’s main track on the last day of January in-between unplaced finishes in stakes races at Santa Anita. “This is our first-ever stakes win,” said James Mckenney after Uzziel had increased her bankroll to $96,310 from three wins and a third in six starts. “We’ve been breeding horses for ten years now and we’ve never really had much luck at Santa Anita. You couldn’t believe how excited we are. We’ve got a full sister to this filly

who’s a yearling and we’ve got the mare in Florida to be bred back to Harlington.”

#58 Amazombie: Living Proof Of Success

by EMILY SHIELDS The story of Amazombie is almost unbelievably fantastical, which makes it even better since it is true. The California-bred went from being a surprise arrival at the barn to being nothing less than a nationally known champion sprinter. In just three seasons, he made the journey from an unknown, injured juvenile, to California’s 58th millionaire. The story starts with development tycoon Gregg Anderson who, along with business partner and close friend Ron Waranch, helped to develop the Palmdale area as well as Westlake Village. They owned a bay colt named Northern Afleet, who was a dual grade II winner in 1997. After his retirement, Northern Afleet took up residence in the Taylor Made Farm stallion barn alongside such stallions as Saint Ballado and Unbridled’s Song. In 2005, Anderson bred his five-year-old In Excess (Ire) mare Wilshe Amaze to Northern Afleet, who later that year was represented by Preakness Stakes (grade I) and Belmont Stakes (grade I) hero Afleet Alex. On the track, Wilshe Amaze was nothing better than a two-time winner in claiming company, but she was a half-sister to the 2001 dual stakes winner Flom’s Prospector. Wilshe Amaze dropped a colt on April 18, 2006. That

bay, later gelded and named Amazombie, progressed through his early training without much fanfare until he suffered a hind-leg tibia fracture. He was rehabilitating on a farm in Hemet when trainer Bill Spawr stopped by to check on his own recovering horses. The chilly weather of the morning caused both Spawr and the farm manager to be bundled against the cold with hoods on. When the manager pointed out Amazombie and another horse galloping together and offered to sell them, Spawr considered and said, “I can give you $5,000 for him.” The manager heard “for them,” and shipped both horses to Spawr’s Santa Anita Park barn the next day. On Aug. 22, 2009, Amazombie made his debut for Spawr and co-owner Thomas Sanford going a mile on the grass at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. He finished second in a promising debut, but in his subsequent starts, Amazombie ran fifth, third and second. He finally broke his maiden in his final start of the year, scoring by a head in a six-furlong contest on the main track’s all-weather Cushion Track surface at Hollywood Park on Dec. 3. Breeder Anderson died just weeks later, on Dec. 23, at the age of 81. Amazombie ramped his game up during the 2010 season

with back-to-back victories at Santa Anita and Hollywood in March and July, respectively. He went four for nine that year, making all his starts in allowance company. All those victories came on the grass, but it was a Dec. 30 dirt sprint that spoke volumes of Amazombie’s potential. He finished second, beaten a head by that year’s Ralph M. Hinds Handicap winner Cayambe, but defeated the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (grade I) winner and California Horse of the Year, Dancing in Silks, and the graded III-placed stakes winner My Summer Slew. Just one start later, Amazombie broke through. He made his 2011 debut in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes against grade I winner Cost of Freedom and graded stakes winner Quick Enough on Jan. 29. Amazombie defeated them both, scoring by a head over Apriority at 11-1 odds. He’d made his stakes debut a winning one, and would never run in anything less than a black-type race again. After finishing second by a half-length to Quick Enough in the state-restricted $100,000 Sensational Star Handicap on the turf, Amazombie switched back to the main track for his graded stakes debut. The target was the grade II, $150,000 Potrero Grande Stakes on April 3, against a field of open-company stakes winners, such as the grade I-winning Cal-bred M One Rifle. Under jockey Mike Smith, Amazombie rallied past all of them to score by a head. Joel Rosario subbed for Smith in the $125,000 Tiznow Stakes at California Gold Rush XII on Apr. 23. Amazombie made quick work of the 7 1/2-furlong contest, leading

throughout to score by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:29.06. The race was contested over Hollywood Park’s main track, proving that Amazombie did not care about the surface or the distance, as long as the race was less than a mile. Next out, Amazombie and a reunited Smith did cross the wire a half-length clear in the grade III, $100,000 Los Angeles Handicap, but a late-stretch bumping incident caused their disqualification. Amazombie was placed third behind Camp Victory and M One Rifle. Despite that disappointment, Amazombie still went favored in the grade I, $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap, but finished third again, this time behind previous dual grade I winner Smiling Tiger and Camp Victory. After finishing third yet again, in the grade I, $250,000 Bing Crosby Handicap, it seemed as though Amazombie had lost a step. He showed the country what California sprinting was all about, however, and closed brilliantly four-wide to win by a neck over Force Freeze. The Breeders’ Cup victory not only pushed Amazombie’s earnings over the $1 million mark, it also granted him the title of Eclipse Champion Male Sprinter, which he won over Caleb’s Posse. He was also named California’s Champion Sprinter, but missed out on other titles—such as the Golden State’s Older Male and Horse of the Year accolades—to Acclamation, the multiple grade I winner who was campaigning at the same time. Amazombie started a campaign to defend his Breeders’ Cup title early in 2012, with his seasonal debut coming in February’s grade II, $200,000 San Carlos Stakes. Trainer Spawr later admitted that the gelding was “heavy” and not in prime racing condition for the race, which resulted in Amazombie running third behind the speedy dual grade I winner The Factor. Having the start under his belt was all Amazombie needed, however, and he rebounded to retain his title in the Potrero Grande on April 7. This time he outran Roman Threat and Camp Victory. After the Potrero Grande, both Smith and Spawr announced that Amazombie was even better than he had been in his championship season. So instead of going through Hollywood Park’s sprint stakes schedule again, Spawr shipped the champion back to Churchill Downs for May’s grade II, $441,600 Churchill Downs Stakes. Amazombie ran gamely, but missed the win by a length. It took the 2011 Preakness hero and eventual three-time grade I winner Shackleford to beat him. Despite all of his credentials, Amazombie was not the favorite when he returned to Del Mar for a second shot at the grade I, $300,000 Bing Crosby on July 29. That honor

went to The Factor, who had defeated the champion earlier in the year. Grade I winner Comma to the Top also joined the compact field of five, but Amazombie had been flourishing at Del Mar. Every day he was turned out in a large covered pen outside, and had trained more aggressively than usual. He showed that fervor in the Crosby, rolling past The Factor to win by 1 1/4 lengths. After that effort, Amazombie continued on his march to defend his Breeders’ Cup crown. He next started in the grade I, $250,000 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes. He was heavily favored in the six-furlong contest, but finished fourth behind 2011 Haskell Invitational Stakes (grade I) hero Coil, that runner’s grade II-winning stablemate Capital Account, and eventual Malibu Stakes (grade I) victor Jimmy Creed. Amazombie was only beaten 1 1/4 lengths for the victory. A field of 14 assembled for the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, worth $1,363,500 on Nov. 3. Amazombie was favored, but Smith was forced to go four-wide throughout, and the popular gelding did not have his usual late rally. He finished eighth, 6 1/4 lengths behind surprise winner Trinniberg. To that point, Amazombie had earned $1,920,378 with 12 wins, five seconds and six thirds in 29 starts. He resumed training in early 2013, but was plagued by quarter cracks and sat on the sidelines until May. He was ready for his first breeze early in the month when an over-eager pony horse darted in front of him, causing Amazombie to wheel around and nearly fall. He injured his left ankle badly in the incident, and it was quickly clear that he would miss the entirety of the season. A year later, Amazombie is not officially retired, but it becomes increasingly unlikely that he will make it back to the races. He still resides in Spawr’s barn, and is eager to accept visitors, especially if they come bearing carrots. Whether or not he makes it back, Amazombie’s legacy is already cemented by his blinding speed and brilliant victories.

Road To Slew: On The Road Again

by MARCIE HEACOX The road to Damascus runs through Road to Slew, a 19-year-old, grade II-winning California-bred enjoying a renaissance as a lead pony for trainer Oscar Garcia. Nick Cafarchia, a California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) member since 1992, bred and owned the chestnut gelding by Slewpy out of the unraced Bold Tropic (SAf) mare, Plumeria Lei. Road to Slew picked up a check in each of his 15 starts for Garcia, and on March 11, 2000, provided the trainer with his first career stakes victory in the $150,000 Crystal Water Handicap at Santa Anita Park. Two starts later, Cafarchia transferred Road to Slew to trainer Steve Miyadi for one race at Golden Gate Fields, and then brought him back south to new trainer Craig Dollase. Road to Slew won five of nine starts for that conditioner, including the 2001 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (grade II) worth $400,000 and the 2001 and 2003 renewals of the Crystal Water, becoming only the second horse in Santa Anita’s history to win the same stakes race thrice. The third Crystal Water win would be Road to Slew’s last race, as he suffered a minor tendon injury. “It wasn’t too bad, but (Cafarchia) didn’t want to run him in a claiming race and decided to stop him for good,” Garcia said. The trainer asked to have the gelding as a pony, stopping his racing record at 25-8-6-5 and $875,360 in earnings. Garcia retrained Road to Slew, whom he nicknamed “Roady,” right at Santa Anita. He said it wasn’t easy, but the horse is intelligent and eventually caught on. Roady wasn’t being used to his full potential, though, because Garcia had to ride many of his own racehorses in the morning, and thus had no pony rider. Enter Taylor Houser. The Washington state native has been around horses, especially Thoroughbreds, her

entire life. Someone told her Garcia had a pony he hardly used, and she got the job as Roady’s rider in October of 2012. Houser, 19, was able to re-awaken the youth in her 19-year-old mount. She said she often gets comments about how much perkier, leaner and stronger Roady is since he’s acquired a full time job. “You don’t find many ponies his age,” Houser said. “Even ones that are his age, they don’t have the spirit, the attitude. They don’t look as good as he does.” With a flaxen mane and tail and bright red tack, Roady stands out regardless of fitness. Houser said complete strangers will occasionally yell out the horse’s name as he passes by. However, Roady has the brains and heart to match his flashy exterior. He knows all the pole locations on the track, and stops by voice command. He also excels at working with two-year-olds. “He has a little more patience with them, because I think he can tell they’re young,” Houser said. Roady has a high physical and mental energy level despite his advanced age, which Houser said can sometimes be a drawback. He’s prone to excitement near the starting gate or around horses moving at high speeds. Houser once tried ponying during races, but Roady had a meltdown. He also occasionally lashes out if a racehorse misbehaves too much. Because of his vitality, Houser thinks Roady can continue working for five more years, and is already planning a luxurious retirement for him. She returned to her home state for a new job in late April, but plans to return to visit. Though his primary rider is gone, Road to Slew will always have a place in the Garcia barn. “He’s my son,” the trainer said. “Everybody likes this horse. He’s so smart, and he’s a great Thoroughbred. We need those kinds of horses all the time.”

Olden Times: Young At Heart

A Blast From The Past by JACKIE BARNES Young at heart is a great way to describe Olden Times. A homebred for legendary Chino horseman Rex C. Ellsworth, who played a substantial role in shaping the history of California’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry, he was a top runner on both the East and West Coasts from 1960 to 1964, and also a major influence at stud. The 1958 bay won three $100,000 races in his career, the Metropolitan, San Juan Capistrano and Illinois Handicaps, and this year represents the 50th anniversary of this great achievement. With jockey Henry Moreno up, Olden Times took the Big Apple by storm with his victory in the 71st running of the $115,400 Metropolitan Handicap before a crowd of more than 59,000 at Aqueduct on May 30, 1964. Twelve of that season’s finest runners went to the post for this one-mile dirt test with champion sprinter Ahoy as the 132-pound highweight. He flew from the gate at the start, followed by Red Gar and Quadrangle, but quickly faded. Olden Times stalked the leaders to the backstretch and when his saddle slipped at the five-eighths pole, Moreno put his whip in his left hand and grabbed the reins and his horse’s mane with his right hand. At that point, Olden Times took off down the stretch and caught that year’s Belmont Stakes winner Quadrangle to win under a hand ride by two lengths. He became the first California-bred to win this race and got Ellsworth his first New York win. Olden Times’ final time of 1:34 2/5 was the fastest by four-fifths of a second of that New York season for the distance. The $118,000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita Park back on March 10, 1962, was an absolute masterpiece as jockey Bill Shoemaker guided Olden Times to a gate-to-wire victory over fellow Cal-bred Juanro and Canadian champion The Axe II in this turf marathon at about 1 3/4 miles. On June 20, 1964, Shoemaker and Olden Times paired to

win the inaugural running of the $111,300 Illinois Handicap at Arlington Park by 1 1/4 lengths. This victory pushed Olden Times’ career earnings to more than $500,000. After two more winning starts and with a record of 54-17-10-5 and $603,875 in earnings, Olden Times retired to stud in California for the 1965 breeding season. He then stood in Kentucky until his death on Aug. 14, 1985, siring more than 60 stakes winners, included among whom were the Eclipse Champion Two-Year-Old Colt, Roving Boy, and Ancient Regime, the champion two-year-old filly in France during 1980. With the success of Roving Boy, Olden Times was the nation’s leading juvenile sire of 1982. Olden Times was also influential as a broodmare sire with his dams producing more than 100 stakes winners, including the champions Johnny D. and Miss Secreto. His dam Djenne (Fr) was an unraced daughter of Djebel (Fr) purchased by Ellsworth for 4,000 guineas at the 1957 Newmarket Sale in England with Olden Times in utero. She produced 14 foals, 11 starters and four winners, including the 1969 dual stakes winner Prove It Girl, the grand dam of multiple stakes winner Duke of Sonoita. When Djenne was voted the California Broodmare of the Year in 1964, it was the sixth time that Ellsworth had won this award in its first 10 years of existence, following Iron Reward, Feather Time, Flying Choice, Dama II and Candy Dish. Olden Times’ sire Relic, a 1945 son of War Relic, won three stakes races at two and three, including the Hopeful Stakes, and earned $69,275. In 1950, he was sold to France where he was a huge success, siring many stakes winners including Texanita (Fr), the champion-two-year-old filly and twice the champion sprinter in her native land. A history making individual, Olden Times not only gave his best every time he stepped on the racetrack but passed his success on to his progeny. Both he and his connections will live forever on these pages reflecting the history of Thoroughbred breeding and racing in the Golden State.

Common Reproductive Problems In Mares

by HEATHER SMITH THOMAS Breeders face a number of challenges when trying to get mares safely in foal and then have them carry the pregnancy to term. James Bailey, DVM, reproductive specialist (Royal Vista Southwest, in Purcell, Oklahoma) says that post-foaling mares that will be rebred occasionally have problems. Post-Foaling Challenges “Some of the problems we experience in post-foaling mares are in individuals who take a longer time than normal to shed the placenta. If the mare has not shed her placenta within two to three hours, we begin assisting her medically, and later on sometimes with manipulation. Monitoring and getting rid of the placenta is very important in working toward easy breeding post-foaling.” There have been many studies showing that a lot of postfoaling antibiotics are not helpful in achieving higher conception rates at foal heat or the next heat. “But we do feel it is very important to do a lavage of the uterus and examine the cervix digitally, to see that it has not been damaged during foaling. Also, these mares usually benefit greatly from a Casliks because they don’t have much vulvar tone and we can prevent aspiration of whatever is in the environment,” says Bailey. “Getting rid of the placenta, ascertaining whether damage has been done internally, and suturing the vulva rather quickly post-foaling (at least the next day), are very important. We evaluate all mares at foal heat. Many mares just take more time than nine to 12 days for the uterus to involute or shrink down, and to stop pooling fluids, and become more able to conceive and carry a foal. Most mares who are still pooling fluid in the uterus at foal heat should be helped with treatment, as opposed to being bred at that time. Some mares may have a lingering infection that needs to be cleared up, and some may just need oxytocin to help with uterine clearance,” he explains. “After the foal heat, we are looking at the same things. We are always monitoring during the heat cycle for accumulation of fluid or any discharge through the cervix. Overall, the wet mares have a lower conception rate than dry mares. They just take a little longer, especially the older mares, to get back in shape for breeding,” he says. Hormonal Challenges The common hormonal problems can be divided into two categories—mares who fail to cycle, and mares who cycle but have problems becoming pregnant. Mares are seasonal breeders and most of them stop cycling during winter. Mats H. Troedsson, DVM, PhD, ACT, DECAR (Professor of Equine Reproduction, Department Chair of Veterinary Science, and Director of the Gluck Equine Researcy Center) says that mares generally don’t start cycling again until the end of April, even though breeding season will be from mid-February through May. Most people put mares under lights or use hor-

monal treatments to get them cycling early. Otherwise, most mares are not fertile at the start of the breeding season. Mares often start to show heat about a month before they actually cycle and ovulate. “At some farms, people start to breed mares too early, when they show heat. This can set up problems because every time the mare is bred, the semen causes an inflammation,” says Troedsson. “This type of inflammation is normal and its purpose is to clear the uterus of excess sperm or bacteria. If the mare is repeatedly bred during her transitional period, however, this can create repeated inflammation challenge to the uterus that may become chronic even after she starts cycling normally. She already has a very challenged and inflamed uterine lining. These mares not only fail to become pregnant when bred too early in transitional heat but the repeated breedings also create a problem that reduces their ability to become pregnant later,” he says. This doesn’t happen as much in a well-managed breeding program because mares are being closely monitored by a veterinarian and checked for time of ovulation, and are not bred unless they are actually cycling. “Then we have the mares who don’t start cycling. We are seeing more of this problem than in the past, and we don’t always know why they don’t start cycling. One reason, recently described, is a condition called persistent endometrial cups. These cups are formed in the uterine lining during pregnancy at about 37 days, and persist until about 120 days. They produce hormones to maintain the pregnancy. Mares do not cycle when they have these endometrial cups. If a mare loses the pregnancy for some reason after day 37 and the endometrial cups remain, she won’t start cycling again,” says Troedsson. “This was one of the problems we found with MRLS (mare reproductive loss syndrome). Mares lost their pregnancies after they’d formed these endometrial cups and didn’t start cycling again for at least 120 to 150 days, and by then the breeding season was over. Mares who lost their pregnancies could not be bred back again that year,” he says. “We discovered that even though some of these mares went on and foaled normally, they sometimes had persistent endometrial cups throughout the pregnancy and even after foaling. Thus they didn’t come back into heat after foaling. This has been shown to be one cause of mares who don’t cycle during breeding season, and we don’t yet have a very good way to treat them,” says Troedsson. “The endometrial cups invade the uterine lining and you just wait for the mares to come out of this and resolve it on their own. There have been some attempts to remove the cups using laser surgery, and also some hormonal treatments, but none of these efforts have been very successful.

This is one of the causes of non-cyclicity that should be kept in mind when mares don’t cycle.” “In looking at the general health of the mare, it may sometimes be necessary to treat the Cushingoid mare,” says Bailey. “We look at many hormones on the problem mares. We can measure and treat problems in the thyroid, and many times we have to look for a cyclical problem—measuring hormones in various areas,” he says. “We also see mares that have lactational anestrus and do not cycle. And some mares, even though they may be under lights or in the natural breeding season, don’t start cycling. There are many therapies to try to assist these mares, but none of these therapies are uniformly successful. Often mares who respond to one form of treatment don’t respond to another. Some mares respond to follicle stimulating hormone and others may respond to sulpiride after estrogen priming. There are many regimes that different veterinarians have worked with. Some methods seem to give results, but it’s very difficult to study any of these treatments. It’s hard to set up a study model where you could have controls, because you don’t know which mares are going to start cycling on their own, and which are cycling as a result of the therapy. Hormonal or cyclical abnormalities can be some of the most difficult things to treat,” explains Bailey. Some mares at their first pregnancy diagnosis are found to have insufficient progesterone to maintain pregnancy. “It’s fairly routine to do progesterone assays at a mare’s first pregnancy examination to determine if she has adequate levels. If not, the mare can be supplemented (with a variety of methods of supplementation of progesterone), to safeguard the pregnancy,” he says. Ovarian Cysts & Tumors An occasional mare may have ovarian cysts. “We see cysts that have no adverse affects on reproductive health. I know of one mare who had a big cyst on her ovary for four years and it has never bothered her; she is very normal,” says Bailey. “We sometimes see mares who do not ovulate a follicle

correctly because of hormonal abnormalities. Instead, they hemorrhage into the follicle. This is called an anovulatory hemorrhagic follicle. These follicles are not fertile and usually require a prostaglandin treatment several days in a row for them to go away and for the mare to cycle into heat again,” he says. Troedsson says this condition has been described for a number of years, but seems to be more common now. The mares grow a follicle and do everything right, and are bred, but they don’t go ovulate. “They either lutenize the follicle (and don’t release an egg, but still build up the CL) or the follicle completely fails to ovulate. Most of the time it is just one lost cycle and the mare doesn’t do it again. But I’ve seen mares who consistently—throughout several seasons—fail to ovulate. We don’t understand why this happens, and why this is no more common. We always used to see it at the end of the breeding season (a condition called ‘autumn follicles’) and this could have a hormonal explanation. Now, however, we are seeing it more and more often during the breeding season. In the vast majority of mares who do this, it’s just one lost cycle and the mare cycles and ovulates normally afterward, but on occasion we see mares who do it all the time,” says Troedsson. “We occasionally see a tumor problem,” says Bailey. “Some ovarian tumors will prevent a mare from cycling, but these are fairly rare. For instance, in 1,300 mares this year, I only saw one with a tumor.” Troedsson says granulose cell tumors have an affect on the other ovary and the mare stops cycling. “These tumors are fairly easy to diagnose with palpation and ultrasound or with hormonal assays for inhibin, testosterone and progesterone, and they can be easily removed. Then the mare will eventually start cycling again. This condition is fairly easy to treat, but if diagnosed during the breeding season and the tumor taken out, it can take several months—sometimes up to a year—before the mare is cycling normally again, so you may lose that breeding season.”

Impacts Of Stress Bailey emphasizes the importance of keeping mares in not handled carefully and slowly—they don’t do well. If a non-stressful situation. “If they’re acclimated to their they’re under stress, they do not get pregnant at a very high surroundings, happy and well fed, they breed much more rate. But if mares are healthy and acclimated, handled successfully,” he says. California-Bred Incentive Awards

Questions and answers concerning California-breds and Californiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lucrative incentive awards program, which was responsible for breeders, owners and stallion owners collecting more than $10 million for 2013. Who qualifies for the awards? The breeders and owners of registered California-bred Thoroughbreds and the owners of California-based stallions. What are Breeders Awards? A monetary award which is paid to the breeder of a registered California-bred Thoroughbred finishing first, second or third in any race run in California and any graded stakes races conducted within the United States. Breeders will receive 75 percent of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owner awards are paid, with an individual breeder receiving a pro-rated share of this breeders fund. The maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second and $90,000 for a third-place finish. Breeder awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry and starting fees. What are Owners Awards? A monetary award which is paid to the owner of a registered California-bred Thoroughbred horse which runs in qualifying races in California. Owners can receive at least a 20 percent bonus on the finisherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s share for finishing first through fifth in an open allowance or overnight stake race and up to a 20 percent bonus for finishing first in an open starter allowance above $15,000 and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. These levels are purposely set high to encourage the ownership of high-quality runners and to restrict the number of qualifiers so that the awards will function as a major incentive. Owner awards always are paid exclusive of nomination, entry and starting fees. They are listed in the racing program and will be distributed at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. What is the Maiden Bonus Program? A Maiden Bonus award will be paid to the owner of a registered California-bred or registered California-sired foal for winning a maiden special weight race. The bonus amount is $17,500 in Southern California and $10,000 in Northern California and at all Fair meetings throughout the state. These awards are paid directly to the owner approximately 45 racing days after the win. Only races at 4 1/2 furlongs or longer will qualify. What are Stallion Awards? In order to stimulate the acquisition in California of nationally prominent stallions, and retain high caliber California stallions, monetary awards are paid annually to the owners of registered California stallions whose California-conceived or California-bred get have won a qualifying race or have finished first, second, or third in a stakes race in the state or any graded stakes race within the United States during the year. Qualifying races are any non-claiming races, including maiden allowance and starter allowance races, with a purse of at least $15,000, and open non-maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or

greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California also qualify. Stallion awards are exclusive of nomination, entry and starting fees. Stallions must be registered by February 15 each year to be eligible for stallion awards. Stallion owners will receive 25 percent of the remainder of the total incentive award monies after owners awards are paid, with an individual owner of a registered California stallion (as of December 31) receiving a prorated share of the stallion fund based on the total qualifying earnings of the get during the year. The maximum purse considered earned in any qualifying race within this state shall be $330,000 for a win, $120,000 for a second and $90,000 for a third-place finish. The stallion must be continuously present in California from February 1 to July 15, inclusive, of the year 2010 or any subsequent calendar year in which he stood at stud and fathered the participant in the race. If a sire dies in this state in the year 2010 or any subsequent year and stood his last season at stud in this state, or was standing at stud in this state on the date of his death in the year 2010 or any subsequent year, he shall thereafter continue to be considered an eligible Thoroughbred stallion regarding a race participant fathered by him in that season. The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA) will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the stallion owner to advise that official registering agency, on or before February 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year that shall be considered in determining the amount of the stallion award to which the owner is entitled. Does the program include races outside of California? Yes. The breeder of a California-bred Thoroughbred finishing first, second or third in a graded stakes outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the breeders fund. The maximum purse considered earned in any race shall be $165,000 for a win, $60,000 for second and $45,000 for a third-place finish. CTBA will help compile data, but it is the ultimate responsibility of the breeder to advise the official registering agency (CTBA), on or before February 15 of any year, of any and all purses earned during the preceding year in graded stakes races outside of this state by horses bred by the breeder. Also, the owner of a registered California stallion whose California-conceived or California-bred get finished first, second or third in a graded stakes outside of California, but within the United States, will be paid a pro-rated share of the Stallion fund with the maximum purse considered earned the same as the breeders above. When are the premiums paid? Owner awards are paid at the same time as the purse by the paymaster. Breeder awards are paid twice a year with a conservative advance payment of up to 10 percent being paid by September 1 and the final payment for 2014 being paid by March 31, 2015. California-Bred Incentive Awards Cont’d. Are there special racing opportunities for California-breds? Yes. Racetracks in California are required by law to offer one race per day which is restricted to California-breds. Last year this amounted to 275 additional racing opportunities and over $16 million in additional purses for California-breds. In addition, the California legislature has declared its intent that at least 10 percent of the total stakes purses paid at any race meeting in California be paid on stakes races restricted to registered California-breds. This amounted to almost $4.8 million in 2013 and will grow significantly through the creation of the Golden State Series. Also, in 2015, California Cup XXV will be held at Santa Anita Park on a date to be announced. Part of the funding for California Cup XXV will come from the incentive award category, the California-bred Race Fund. 9.5 percent of the total incentive award monies will be used for this category, with the monies funding the promotion of California-bred races, the supplement of purses for California-bred races and the creation of new California-bred stakes. What is the definition of a California-bred? The definition of a California-bred is as follows: A California-bred Thoroughbred is a horse dropped in California after being conceived in California, or any Thoroughbred foal dropped by a mare in California if the mare remains in California to be next bred to a Thoroughbred stallion standing in the state. If the mare cannot be bred for two successive seasons, but remains in California during that period, her foal will be considered a California-bred.

What is the definition of a California-sired horse? A “California-sired horse” is a Thoroughbred that was conceived in California by a registered California stallion. A California-sired horse is only eligible for entry in races restricted to California-bred or California-sired horses and is not eligible for any breeder or owner awards, except the maiden bonus awards. How does one register a California-bred? Registration applications must be filed with the CTBA. Only those horses which are both registered with The Jockey Club and fulfill all requirements as outlined in the definition of a California-bred are eligible. The fees for registration are as follows: 1) $100.00 for CTBA members, $200.00 for non-members if applied for by September 30 of foal’s yearling year; 2) $125.00 for CTBA members, $250.00 for non-members if applied for after September 30 of yearling year but before January 1 following; and 3) $750.00 if applied for after January 1 of two-year-old year. If desired, application can be made in advance of receipt of Jockey Club Certificates to escape penalty for late filing, but no actual registration will be made until certificates are available.
